Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni has presented a six-point plan which links a ceasefire in Gaza with a return to peace negotiations with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.Channel 2 News reported about the details of the plan on Friday evening. Livni has presented the plan to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu but he has yet to respond, the report said.Livni’s plan includes the following steps:1- A ceasefire.2-Immediate humanitarian assistance to the residents of Gaza.3-Measures that will meet both Israel’s security demands and the economic needs of the people of Gaza, equating the interests of the parties.4-Recognition of the Palestinian Authority as the ruling party of Gaza, while recognizing the principle of one law and one military force.5-Establishment of a mechanism that would ensure that any assistance and money transferred to the PA will help the residents and not be spent on terrorism.6-Opening border crossings to Gaza while establishing a mechanism to prevent terrorism, and renewing peace negotiations with Abbas.

Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

Livni has presented the plan to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu but he has yet to respond, the report said.Livni’s plan includes the following steps:1- A ceasefire.2-Immediate humanitarian assistance to the residents of Gaza.3-Measures that will meet both Israel’s security demands and the economic needs of the people of Gaza, equating the interests of the parties.4-Recognition of the Palestinian Authority as the ruling party of Gaza, while recognizing the principle of one law and one military force.5-Establishment of a mechanism that would ensure that any assistance and money transferred to the PA will help the residents and not be spent on terrorism.6-Opening border crossings to Gaza while establishing a mechanism to prevent terrorism, and renewing peace negotiations with Abbas.
Speaking to Channel 2 News on Friday evening, Livni explained that her plan may be supported by the international community, adding that Hamas made acceptance of her plan easier when it announced on Thursday that it would refuse a ceasefire in Gaza unless all its demands are met, including the establishment of a port."It is clear to everyone today that they have no interest in compromising," she argued. "Their demands are based on agreements that they themselves do not accept (i.e. the Oslo Accords), so this plan represents the interests of the security of Israel and the world can accept it.”Livni stressed that she is opposed to dialogue with Hamas and any agreement to its demands."You do not reward them for their aggression," she added, but declared, "I, like most of the members of the Cabinet, believe that Abbas is a partner.""The conflict has shown that Hamas does not want to actually lift the blockade, because it had an opportunity to do so in 2006," said Livni, who made it clear that all operational options are on the table. "Any action will be possible if Hamas continues to fire on Israel,” she declared.Livni earlier this week had harsh words for the “sour spin”, as she put it, of the Israeli media on Operation Protective Edge."Take a look at the current situation and what we have achieved thus far," she said Monday. The global coffee company Starbucks released a statement this week to clarify apparent misconceptions about the company's patronage of Israel, Huffington Post reports.In a fact sheet updated August 5, Starbucks notes it does not support any political or religious causes, adding that neither Starbucks nor its CEO, Howard Schultz, provides any financial support to the Israeli government or Israeli military."Rumors that Starbucks or Howard provides financial support to the Israeli government and/or the Israeli Army are unequivocally false. Starbucks is a publicly held company and as such, is required to disclose any corporate giving each year through a proxy statement," the statement reads, according to Huffington Post.In Q-and-A format, the statement answers queries about Starbucks' presence in the Middle East.One questions asks if it is true that Starbucks has ever sent any of its profits to the Israeli government or military. "No. This is absolutely untrue," the company responds.As far as why the company closed its Israel locations, the statement answers, "We decided to dissolve our partnership in Israel in 2003 due to the on-going operational challenges that we experienced in that market. After many months of discussion with our partner we came to this amicable decision. While this was a difficult decision for both companies, we believe it remains the right decision for our businesses."While unstated, the political backdrop for the defensive nature of the statement could lie in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which advocates for boycotting Israeli products and companies that give money to Israel.Over the past several years, the movement has grown, even while it was criticized by people on all sides of the political spectrum.Most recently, Britain's largest trade union voted to boycott Israeli companies in a unanimous vote. Last week, Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, announced it will no longer sell products originating from Judea and Samaria starting this September.Despite not currently having any locations in Israel, Starbucks operates in most other countries in the Middle East, including Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
