Hundreds of Nanaimoites lined up for free burgers and hotdogs at a "Freedom BBQ" on Wednesday afternoon at Maffeo-Sutton Park. Many posed for pictures and chatted with media personality Ezra Levant, the man behind the event, put on to celebrate the reversal of a controversial motion by Nanaimo city council."Something important happened in Nanaimo over the last two months," said Levant. "The motion put on by city council was illegal."Council moved to cancel a contract to host a televised leadership event, originally sponsored locally by the Daily News and Coastal Community Credit Union, at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. The event was sponsored in part by U.S. fast-food outlet Chick-fil-A, whose owner Dan T. Cathy is known for his views supporting the biblical definition of marriage.Opponents considered the motion by council anti-Christian, and Levant, who visits Nanaimo regularly, ridiculed it on his television news program The Source."That's illegal under the Charter of Freedoms," said Levant. Despite rain, at its peak the food lineup wound across the plaza several times, almost the full way to the park entrance.Levant said 600 people signed up for the event, many from outside Nanaimo.Peter Sikora, of Nanaimo, said he took part to support "freedom of expression, democracy and natural justice."David Liberatore travelled from Saanich because he considers it an important issue."I think you should stand up for freedom any time it's threatened, because the only thing that separates us from dictatorships is our charters of free rights and freedom of religion."Others were not there to show support."I'm here because I didn't like what you said about (Coun.) Fred Pattje," Terry Lee Wagar told Levant, while lined up for his free burger. "I didn't like that you called him a racist."Wagar said he agrees council shouldn't have voted to cancel the conference."I thought that was a bad decision," Wagar said."They did find out just a few days before the event. I'm sure they regret their decision, but at the same time I'm sure it was well-intended." DBellaart@nanaimodailynews.com 250-729-4235-Nanaimo Daily News
