"The Egyptian initiative remains on the table and the objective is ceasefire. An IDF reserve officer, Col. Amotz Greenberg, 45, of Hod Hasharon, and Sgt. Adar Bersano, 20, of Nahariya, were killed Saturday morning after a terrorist squad infiltrated from Gaza into Israel through a tunnel.The terrorists engaged an IDF motorized force that passed near the location where they emerged from the tunnel, firing at a jeep and killing the two soldiers, and wounding two others.Initial inquiry indicates that 8-9 terrorists took part in the attack. The tunnel stretched from Gaza, under the security fence and into Israeli territory, opening into a location near Ein Hashlosha. Channel 2 said that the terrorists carried anesthetics and plastic handcuffs, indicating a plan to abduct Israeli soldiers or civilians.The terrorists approached the first jeep they saw, according to the report, and began opening fire on sight.

The IDF force returned fire effectively at the terrorist squad despite being caught by surprise, killing at least one terrorist; Greenberg and Bersano were killed as they exited the jeep to apprehend the terrorists. The other terrorists escaped back into Gaza and were attacked by an IAF aircraft. Hamas's "military wing," the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said 12 of their men stayed "behind enemy lines" for six hours before engaging in "direct confrontation with the enemy to avenge the blood of our martyrs, particularly the children."The terrorists claimed they "killed six soldiers on patrol and wounded several others," but the Israeli army said there were two deaths.IDF Spokesman, Brigadier General Moti Almoz, expressed condolences to the soldiers' families Saturday night - and emphasized that the attack was connected to the ground offensive's focus on terror tunnels. "Today [Hamas] tried to attack soldiers and civilians, and unfortunately there were casualties among our forces," he told reporters. "These tunnels are not simply for hiding - Hamas planned to abduct Israelis using there tunnels and carry out attacks on Israeli cities and military bases [from there]."
Bersano will be buried at Nahariya's military cemetery at 5:00 pm Sunday. Greenberg's funeral arrangements are still pending.

Several of the IDF's elite combat forces are currently in Gaza, including the Paratroopers, Nahal, Givati, Tanks, Engineering Corps, and Special Forces. An IDF reserve officer, Col. Amotz Greenberg, 45, of Hod Hasharon, and Sgt. Adar Bersano, 20, of Nahariya, were killed Saturday morning after a terrorist squad infiltrated from Gaza into Israel through a tunnel.The terrorists engaged an IDF motorized force that passed near the location where they emerged from the tunnel, firing at a jeep and killing the two soldiers, and wounding two others.Initial inquiry indicates that 8-9 terrorists took part in the attack. The tunnel stretched from Gaza, under the security fence and into Israeli territory, opening into a location near Ein Hashlosha. Channel 2 said that the terrorists carried anesthetics and plastic handcuffs, indicating a plan to abduct Israeli soldiers or civilians.The terrorists approached the first jeep they saw, according to the report, and began opening fire on sight.

Hamas's "military wing," the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said 12 of their men stayed "behind enemy lines" for six hours before engaging in "direct confrontation with the enemy to avenge the blood of our martyrs, particularly the children."The terrorists claimed they "killed six soldiers on patrol and wounded several others," but the Israeli army said there were two deaths.IDF Spokesman, Brigadier General Moti Almoz, expressed condolences to the soldiers' families Saturday night - and emphasized that the attack was connected to the ground offensive's focus on terror tunnels. "Today [Hamas] tried to attack soldiers and civilians, and unfortunately there were casualties among our forces," he told reporters. "These tunnels are not simply for hiding - Hamas planned to abduct Israelis using there tunnels and carry out attacks on Israeli cities and military bases [from there]."

Israel cannot accept a reality in which millions of its citizens are subject to the whims of radical Islamic terrorist organizations, under immediate threat with as little as 15 seconds to find shelter from incoming missiles.The prayer for peace at the Vatican held by invitation of Pope Francis raised high hopes. Pope Francis has since said that despite the present situation, the prayers were “not useless.” What remains today of the hopes raised by this joint prayer? The joint prayer at the Vatican was a unique spiritual event, it was not a political one. The Pope is a man of peace and we appreciate his prayers and calls for peace. The hope for peace still remains in spite of the current difficult times. Israel is eager for peace and ready to make the necessary compromises to achieve it.In Israel’s view, what were the elements/events that caused this dramatic deterioration? The latest round of rocket fire from the Gaza strip on Israel started on June 12, the very day that three Israeli teenagers were abducted and murdered by members of Hamas. In the following days, the shooting escalated significantly reaching a peak on July 7, when at least 80 rockets were launched at Israeli cities.Over 1,497 rockets have been fired on Israel since the beginning of the “Operation Protectice Edge” (8 July). Today more than 3.5 million Israelis live within range of these rockets and missiles. No government can stand idly by while its citizens are being attacked. Israel, like any other State, has the right and duty to defend its citizens.Does Israel want and expect help from the Vatican to bring about a new truce and a return to negotiations? Spiritual religious leaders and interreligious diplomacy can sometimes pave the way for a dialogue between nations. Interreligious dialogue can lower the animosity between two sides of a conflict, create more trust and build bridges to peace.Hamas broke the truce that Israel had accepted. What could Vatican and international diplomacy do to persuade Hamas to be in line with the diplomacy of Abu Mazen? On July 15, Israel accepted the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire in order to allow for sustained quiet to be achieved diplomatically. On the other hand, Hamas continued to fire rockets refusing to accept the cease-fire.Hamas is a terrorist organization that does not recognize the right of Israel to exist. It holds its population hostage to a policy of hatred and war. It uses all its resources only to arm itself and uses civilians to protect its weapons and even urges them to act as human shields.The International community can pressure Hamas to change its ways.I believe the power to change can also come from within Palestinian society. They must stand up and choose life over martyrdom. The Palestinians must change the way they view Hamas and reject its core values and objectives.

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Two Israeli soldiers were killed in a cross-border attack by Hamas militants on Saturday, the army said, as the Palestinian death toll from the conflict rose above 300 with no diplomatic solution in sight.The Israeli military said four other soldiers were wounded in the raid by fighters who reached Israel through a concealed tunnel. One Hamas gunman was killed, while the rest of the group managed to escape back into the Gaza Strip, the military added.Israel sent ground forces into Hamas-controlled Gaza on Thursday after 10 days of air and naval barrages failed to stop rocket fire from the Palestinian territory.It has vowed to destroy a network of tunnels out of Gaza and hunt down the militants' stockpiles of missiles.The land incursion has so far failed to subdue Hamas and its allies, who fired more than 90 rockets into Israel on Saturday, the Israeli army said. One killed a man and wounded two children in a southern Bedouin Arab village in Israel, police said.Gaza officials said at least 336 Palestinians, including 70 children, have been killed in the 12-day conflict - about 100 in the last 48 hours alone. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans to travel to the region this weekend as part of a growing international efforts to end hostilities.France's foreign minister Laurent Fabius, who flew to Israel after meetings in Egypt and Jordan, said efforts to secure a ceasefire so far had failed."On the contrary, there's a risk of more civilian casualties that worries us," Fabius said, after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.Egypt said on Saturday it had no plans to revise the ceasefire proposal, which Hamas has already rejected."There will be no truce without an end to the war that the Occupation (Israel) began, a lifting of the blockade and a halt to all violations and killings in Gaza and the West Bank," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in Gaza.Pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets of numerous European cities, including London and Paris, to demand an immediate end to the conflict. "I am close to you, to the nuns and the entire Catholic community,” the Pope wrote in a brief and personal message of comfort which sent yesterday afternoon to the pastor of Gaza’s Catholic community, Jorge Hernandez (an Argentinean missionary and member of the Institute of the Incarnate Word). “I accompany you with my prayers and my closeness. May Jesus bless you and the Blessed Virgin protect you. I embrace you. Fraternally Yours, Francis.” These few essential words appeared all the more intense and eloquent after the Israeli military launched its ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.Yesterday the Pope was informed of the distressing situation which Gaza’s approximately 200 Catholics find themselves in, along with all the other inhabitants of the Strip. On Wednesday afternoon three missiles destroyed a house opposite the Holy Family church which is currently home to the Mother Teresa nuns, 29 disabled children and 9 elderly women whom the nuns are caring for. They moved into the church when the Israeli military operation began.Abuna Mario Cornioli, a priest in Beit Jala, wrote on his blog that there was meant to hold its summer camp. But just one day in, it was interrupted because it was at serious risk of being bombed .” Gaza has no shelters and the air raid sirens don’t go off before bombs land so Fr. Jorge and the nuns dediced it was best to sent the children back to their homes, even though these could have become their graves from one moment to the next.” All the children are terrified, they wet themselves and cry practically all day. I daren’t think what may happen if this sobbing reaches God’s ears.”Many Christians see this new uncontrolled spiral of bloody violence and death in light of the words and gestures shared by Pope Francis on his visit to Jordan, Palestine and Israel, where he went to spread the seed of peace. “Pope Francis’ visit rocked the status quo of a conflict that has been fostered for years and managed, with no real willingness to resolve it,” Mario Cornioli said.
