Star of David, Stripes of Blue

Symbolism and meaning on Israel’s Independence Day

Israeli flag
Israeli flag-Flash 90
In Israel, during the weeks before Independence Day flags come out of boxes, draped from their balconies and stuck on cars. Large office buildings display banners 30 floors high and light displays even larger. When you’re in Israel, it’s hard to escape the excitement of Independence Day!

So why blue and white?
The blue of the flag originates in biblical times. During these times, tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, had blue dye in it. In fact, God spoke to Moses and advised him:‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generation fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue. And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye used to go astray; that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.’ (NUM 15:38-40).
Over time as the Israelites spread throughout the world, this commandment was difficult, if not impossible to keep because no dye was available. Some people wove blue or purple into their tallit in an attempt to remember this request. Even today, many tallits on the market still have blue and purple stripes.
The blue stripes in the flag of Israel are a modern interpretation of the tallit, to remind this generation and the generations to come to keep the commandments. The blue and white is fitting for a flag, fitting for Judaica, fitting for tallit, but it doesn’t quite stand alone as a symbol. Enter the Star of David…

What is the origin of the Jewish Star?
The Star of David (or Jewish Star) has evolved into a symbol of Judaism, chosen by the Jewish people to represent themselves. There is no real historical basis for this choice and no mention in any books or scholarly theories that are proven to show any deep meaning in ancient times. In fact, biblically it was the burning bush that represented the people of Israel.‘And the angel of the LORD appeared until him in a flame of fiber out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.’ (Exodus 3:2).Like the bush that would not burn, the people of Israel could not be consumed by those who seek to destroy them. But a burning bush doesn’t make a compelling symbol any more than a color. Starting in the 17th century, the Jewish Star became the prominent symbol of Judaism.
A symbol is only as relevant as the meaning we ascribe to it – so as Jews and gentiles began to identify with the Star of David as a symbol of Judaism, it truly became to represent the Jewish people. And so it remains until today.

Same Star, Different Meaning
For those who want to destroy Israel, the star is a symbol of apartheid, oppression and war crimes. It’s used in cartoons under the guise of criticizing Israel, when in fact what it is doing is promoting anti-Semitism. So-called humanitarians burn the Israeli flag and carry signs where the Jewish Star is equated with the Nazi symbol. We’ll never forget the yellow stars of the Holocaust – the true symbol of genocide.
For the Jewish people and those who support them, this star is a source of pride, not hate.

So what does it really mean?
The true meaning of the Star of David is personal. Rabbi Shraga Simmons says that the six points of the stars represents God’s rule of all directions. He supports this claim with the fact that the star is called “Magen David” which means Shield of David. And since it was not the physical Shield of David that won his fights, but his help from God, the star represents God’s help. Simmons supports this again with the third blessing after the Haftorah, which states, “Blessed are you God, Shield of David.” However, he admits that there are other ideas:
  • The Kabbalah version of the Yin-Yang, representing the dichotomies of man, e.g. good vs. evil.
  • The 12 tribes of Israel.
  • The relationship between the Jewish people and God; we pray up as God projects down.
  • Technology developed in the 1st century Bar Kochba rebellion whereby shields were fashioned into a hexagon, formed by two triangles.
  • The conflicts among the Jewish people.
Why wear a Jewish Star?
Some people show their feelings about Israel by flying the Israeli flag high. Others might share news stories & images on Facebook. For those who choose to wear the Jewish Star, it’s just another way to connect personally to whatever feelings they have.People have individualistic interpretations of the Jewish Star. As a result, there are as many manifestations of the wearable Star of David as there are feelings about the symbol itself. The Star of David is a common charm on red Kabbalah bracelets. It adorns jewelry together with traditional blessings and prayers; it’s also not unusual to find modern art versions. One version consists of a dove and a triangle, called the “David Dove.” You can even find the Star of David entwined in a dream catcher or woven in gold around a crystal.

The importance of symbols
Symbols are an important part of how people express themselves. It’s one way we can show ourselves to others, but also remind ourselves of our own beliefs. Whether you choose to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day by flying a flag, sharing an inspirational e-mail with friends & family, joining activities in the Jewish community or just praying, the important thing is that you stay true to yourself.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who usually steers clear of passionate rhetoric, called terrorists "subhuman" at the Har Herzl ceremony marking Memorial Day for the IDF's Fallen Soldiers. His speech focused on the victims of terror – starting with Adelle Biton, the baby who is fighting for her life after an Arab rock ambush in Samaria."The rock terror joins the terror of fire bombs, the shootings and the rest of the terror attacks," Netanyahu said. "All of these have felled 2,500 victims."The terrorists want to us away from our land, he said, and all means are acceptable, in their eyes. "The murderers do not shy away from butchering babies and old people, or innocent bystanders. We will never be like them."Terror is not a pestilence from heaven," he said. "It is the work of humans. Usually, of subhumans. We will defeat them."
"There are supposed men of morals who preach to us, day and night," he added. "But I notice that they are not always quick to denounce our enemies when they spill the blood of innocents."

Iran warns strike will trigger ‘WWIII’

TEHRAN: Iran could launch a preemptive strike if Israel prepares to attack it, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander told broadcaster Al-Alam yesterday, a day after his boss warned that conflict was inevitable. Should Israel and Iran engage militarily, “nothing is predictable… and it will turn into World War III,” Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told Iran’s Arabic-language television network. Hajizadeh, who is in charge of Revolutionary Guards missile systems, said: “In circumstances in which they (the Israelis) have prepared everything for an attack, it is possible that we will make a preemptive attack. But we do not see this at the moment.”He added that Iran would deem any Israeli strike to be conducted with US authorisation, so “whether the Zionist regime attacks with or without US knowledge, then we will definitely attack US bases in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan”. He warned that Israel “cannot imagine our response – and it will sustain heavy damage and that will be a prelude to its obliteration.” The US Fifth fleet is based in Bahrain and the US has a heavy military presence in Afghanistan. On Saturday, the head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said war between Iran and Israel “will eventually happen, but it is not certain where and when”. It was the first time a senior Iranian official had acknowledged a probability of war breaking out between the two arch-foes. Jafari, quoted by the ISNA and Fars news agencies, also said such a conflict would lead to the annihilation of Israel.”If they begin (aggression), it will spell their destruction and will be the end of the story,” he said.
Yesterday, Jafari’s deputy, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, told Fars in an interview that Iran’s “defensive strategy is based on the assumption that we will engage in a war, a massive battle against a global coalition led by the US”. He said the Islamic republic had made preparations to “crush” the enemy by hitting “enemy bases in the region, the security of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the energy market, as well as the lives of enemy forces.” He added: “We will not start a war. But if someone wages war against us, we will launch continuous offensives.”Tensions have risen significantly in recent weeks, with Israel threatening to unleash air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel believes Iran’s nuclear program to be aimed at developing an atomic weapons capability that would menace its existence and its current status as the Middle East’s sole, if undeclared, nuclear weapons power. Iran insists that its atomic program is exclusively for peaceful, civilian ends, but it is locked in a deepening standoff with the UN nuclear watchdog and the UN Security Council over the issue.Separately, Siemens denied yesterday that it had sold any nuclear equipment to Iran, after a prominent Iranian lawmaker accused the German firm of selling the country gear that was laced with explosives. The lawmaker, Aladin Borujerdi, who chairs the parliamentary national security and foreign policy commission, said Siemens had sold Iran equipment for its nuclear program that contained mini-explosives, Iranian media reported yesterday. “Intelligence-security apparatus succeeded in discovering explosives in equipment which were provided to us for our nuclear activities,” Borujerdi said in an interview with parliament’s ICANA news website. “The explosives were to blow up when activated to disrupt the whole system.  Domestic experts nullified the plot of the enemy, however,” he was quoted as saying by ICANA. “The company Siemens, which provided this equipment, must answer for its action,” he said.
Siemens spokesman Alexander Machowetz categorically denied the charge, telling AFP: “Siemens maintains no business dealings in connection to the Iranian nuclear program and delivers no equipment to this end.” Iran’s Press TV carried the story on its website, but no other state media reported on the claim. Iran often alleges sabotage attempts by Western or Israeli intelligence services, but provides little in the way of evidence. The Islamic republic, however, has suffered the assassination of four of its nuclear scientists in the past two years, attacks it has blamed on Israel, the United States and Britain. It has also been targeted by sophisticated computer viruses, such as Stuxnet and Flame, that have spied on its activities or wiped out data related to its controversial nuclear program.Meanwhile, a senior Iranian lawmaker accused the head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog yesterday of passing confidential information about Iran’s nuclear activities to Israel. In the latest sign of strained relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Javad Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament’s presiding board, said IAEA chief Yukiya Amano would be to blame if Iran reduced its ties with the body. “Amano’s repeated trips to Tel Aviv and asking the Israeli officials’ views about Iran’s nuclear activities indicates that Iran’s nuclear information has been disclosed to the Zionist regime (Israel) and other enemies of the Islamic Republic,” Jahangirzadeh was quoted as saying by Iran’s English-language Press TV.“If the agency’s actions lead to Iran cutting cooperation with this international body, all responsibility will be with the IAEA director general,” said Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee. The IAEA was not immediately available to comment on his allegation. Last week, Iranian nuclear energy chief Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani said “terrorists” might have infiltrated the Vienna-based agency. He suggested the IAEA included too much sensitive information about Iran’s nuclear program in its reports that he said could be used by saboteurs.
Western diplomats dismissed his allegations as an attempt to distract attention away from the agency’s bid to gain access to a site in Iran it suspects was used for nuclear weapons research, something Tehran denies. Iran blames Israel and its Western allies for the assassination of nuclear scientists in Iran, including an unsuccessful attempt on Abbasi-Davani in Nov 2010. It also blames those countries for computer viruses that appeared designed to damage its nuclear machinery.Kuwait times

Gold 'collapses' to $1,400 zone amid commodities rout

These are stories Report on Business is following Monday, April 15, 2013.
Follow Michael Babad and the Globe’s top business stories on Twitter.
Commodities sinkGold prices plunged again today amid a general rout in commodities, sinking below $1,400 (U.S.) an ounce at one point to mark a decline of more than $160 over two days of trading.“When gold begins to fall, it sparks margin calls, and then it’s a vicious circle,” said chief currency strategist Camilla Sutton of Bank of Nova Scotia.Just about everything looks ugly this morning: Silver, copper and oil are also sinking, as are stocks and currencies such as the Canadian dollar, which was down 0.8 per cent from Friday’s close on a number of factors, including the decline in bullion. The U.S. dollar, Ms. Sutton noted, is stronger as gold "collapses."Gold opened Friday at $1,561 an ounce, then sank, marking a plunge into bear market territory. Today, it dipped below $1,400 at one point, to a low of about $1,385, before regaining some ground.
The real trouble began last week amid suggestions in a draft bailout document that Cyprus could sell gold from its reserves, sparking concerns that other embattled European countries, such as Italy and Portugal, could follow suit. Two major banks – Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Société Générale – also put out bleak forecasts. Then today, a reading on China’s economic growth disappointed the markets, despite the fact it came in at 7.7 per cent, sparking fears over what’s supposed to be the engine of the global recovery.
"We already knew Europe isn't growing," said Kit Juckes, the chief of foreign exchange at Société Générale.
"Then we got a U.S. slowdown. Then we got a Russian slowdown and then the Chinese data came out and sent further despondency into the markets. Down went gold, down went equities, credit indices. Yield curves steepened and up went yen, dollar and Korean won, against pretty much everything else."Gold will likely see a “minor rebound” after today, said Michael Haigh, Société Générale’s head of commodities research, but here’s how he views it: “Buying opportunities but I won’t be buying.”Société Générale had projected a 15-per-cent drop in gold by the end of this year, to $1,375 an ounce, followed by what it forecast would be years of a “gentle bear market.”Goldman Sachs, in turn, sees gold averaging $1,545 this year and $1,350 next.
RBC’s outlookRoyal Bank of Canada today did a stress test of sorts on North American gold producers, finding “significant” pain should bullion plunge further to $1,300 an ounce. Here’s what Stephen Walker, the head of the bank’s global mining research, and analysts Dan Rollins and Sam Crittenden found:Gold at $1,500 an ounce: “We estimate a low probability that our selected gold producers would trigger a single-notch credit ratings downgrade. We would expect producers to draw down existing credit facilities, consider cash-saving measures and, where necessary, seek debt financing in order to complete the existing capital spending programs.”At $1,400: A “moderate probability” of a one-notch downgrade to Barrick Gold Corp., while all producers cut expenses and delay spending plans. At $1,300: A “moderate probability” of a one-notch hit to Newmont and Allied Nevada Gold, and a “conceivable” hit to non-investment grade debt ratings of Barrick and Kinross Gold Corp., while all producers would cut spending sharply, put off new programs and, for some, cut dividends. At $1,200: A “high probability” of non-investment grade hits to Barrick, Newmont Mining Corp. and Kinross. “We would expect all the gold producers to consider care and maintenance for high-cost mines, cut all discretionary expenses, cut capital spending programs, defer new development projects and consider cutting dividends.”

Markets anxiousStock markets around the world are also taking it on the chin today, largely because of China.
“After last night’s disappointing Chinese growth figures, which missed their target by some way, it is hardly surprising that commodity stocks have led the charge lower,” said market analyst Alastair McCaig of IG in London.Tokyo’s Nikkei dropped 1.6 per cent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng 1.4 per cent.In Europe, London’s FTSE 100, Germany’s DAX and the Paris Cac 40 were down by between 0.6 per cent and 0.9 per cent by about 9:15 a.m. ET.Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 futures also sank.

Anti-euro party officially launched in Germany

Today @ 09:29 APR 15,13
By Valentina Pop

Around 1,500 delegates gathered early Sunday morning in Hotel Intercontintental in former West Berlin - so many that the organisers had to book an extra conference room. All the participants believe that the euro is a doomed project that should be ended soon for the benefit of all the single currency countries."We take pride in being called populists. There is something like a free speech police here in Germany saying there is no alternative to the euro. We are the alternative now, Alternative for Germany," Konrad Adam, an ex-journalist and co-founder of the new party said in the opening speech, often interrupted by standing ovations. They reject the anti-European label. But the reaction of the crowded room at a certain point was revealing. A British and US diplomat invited to the meeting were greeted with applause. An EU commission representative was booed.Unlike other EU countries, Germany's openly anti-European parties have so far led a marginalised political existence. And no party so far has openly advocated for the dissolution of the euro, apart from the neo-Nazi NPD which staged a mini protest outside the hotel saying they are the "real" anti-euro party. The Alternative for Germany hopes to capitalise on recent polls showing 17 percent of voters could imagine opting for a party that favours exiting the euro. But start-up parties have a harder time in Germany than elsewhere, especially when they are single-issue.The Pirate Party calling for free and deregulated Internet made it into regional parliaments, but internal quarrels and a lack other political ideas have eroded their support base and they are unlikely to make it into the Bundestag.Christian Jacken, a 36-year old former Pirate party official present at the Alternative for Germany congress told this website he is interested in joining the new party because of its ideas."I am pro-European, but I am against a centralised state and the constant breach of EU treaties - like the no-bailout clause," he said, with the constitutional court in Germany and the EU's own top court finding that the treaties were not breached by the setting up of a eurozone bailout fund.In order to make it into the Bundestag in the 22 September elections, Alternative for Germany needs to receive at least five percent of the total votes. Pollsters see this as unlikely, but the party could add to the troubles of the Liberals, Angela Chancellor Merkel's current coalition partners, who are stuck at four percent in the polls.According to the latest political barometer published by ZDF broadcaster on Friday, Merkel's Christian Democrats gained two points and lead with 42 percent, while the Social Democrats lost another two points and are down to 27 percent. The Greens are stable at 14 percent, the leftist Linke at six percent.Asked if they would still want Merkel as chancellor, 63 percent of voters said yes, while her Social-Democratic challenger Peer Steinbrueck only convinced 27 percent, down two points compared to last month. If Germany were to exit the euro, 66 percent think it would be "rather bad" for Germany, while 26 percent say it would be a positive step. Seventeen percent said they would vote for a party favouring leaving the single currency.

North Korea looks inward for founder's birthday, tensions ease

By Ju-min Park and Jack Kim
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea celebrated the anniversary of its founder's birth on Monday and abandoned its shrill threats of war against the United States and the South, easing tensions in a region that had seemed on the verge of conflict. The North has threatened nuclear attacks on the United States, South Korea and Japan after new U.N. sanctions were imposed in response to its latest nuclear arms test in February. Many Pyongyang watchers has expected a big military parade to showcase North Korea's armed forces on the "Day of the Sun", the date the North's founder Kim Il-Sung was born. But on Monday, the 101st anniversary of Kim's birth was marked in the North's capital, Pyongyang, with a festival of flowers named after Kim.In contrast to weeks of tirades against its enemies, North Korean state media made hardly a mention of conflict."South Korea and the United States have sent a message for dialogue, so for now the North is switching to that mode," said Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
"The North's strategic intention has been to try to get some kind of response from the United States and South Korea and now they have that. They won't be brushing away the suggestions to enter dialogue lightly."
The United States has offered talks, but on the pre-condition that North Korea abandons its nuclear weapons ambitions. North Korea deems its nuclear arms a "treasured sword" and has vowed never to give them up.Nevertheless, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, ending a trip to the region dominated by concern about North Korea, stressed his interest in a diplomatic solution."The United States remains open to authentic and credible negotiations on denuclearization, but the burden is on Pyongyang," he said. "North Korea must take meaningful steps to show that it will honor commitments it has already made, and it has to observe laws and the norms of international behavior."On Sunday evening, however, Kerry appeared to open the door to talking without requiring the North to take denuclearization steps in advance. Beijing, he said, could be an intermediary.Earlier, Kerry said he believed China, the North's sole economic and political benefactor, should put "some teeth" in efforts to persuade Pyongyang to alter its policies. The Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, warned on Monday that tensions could get out of control.
"It does not matter if it is intentional or accidental, even the smallest thing could cause the situation to change rapidly and perhaps get totally out of control," the paper said.
ON GUARD
South Korean and U.S. officials said last week North Korea appeared set to test-launch a medium-range missile as a show of strength linked to Monday's anniversary of the birth of North Korean state founder Kim Il-Sung.North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests but it was not believed to be near weapons capability.South Korea said it remained on guard against any missile launch and it regretted the North's rejection of an offer of talks made last week by President Park Geun-hye. It said the offer would remain on the table.Missile launches and nuclear tests by North Korea are both banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions, that were expanded after its third nuclear test, in February. The aim of the North's aggressive acts, analysts say, is to bolster the leadership of Kim Jong-un, the 30-year-old grandson of the nation's founder, or to force the United States to hold talks with the North. The North has also been angry about annual military exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces, describing them as a "hostile" act. The United States dispatched B52 and B2 stealth bombers from their bases to take part.Yoji Koda, a former commander in chief of the Japanese naval fleet, told Reuters he believed North Korea's threats were part of a "calculated provocation", not a prelude to an attack. He said indications the United States was softening a forceful stance to the North had given its leader Kim Jong-un the opportunity to tone things down."This has enabled North Korea to declare victory and sheathe its swords," he said.Kim Il-Sung led his country from its founding in 1948 through the 1950-53 Korean War and until he died in 1994. His son, Kim Jong-il, then took over.KCNA, the North's news agency, reported that people were flocking to a statue of Kim Il-Sung, uttering "My father, our great leader"."This sincere expression comes from the bottom of their hearts," it said.
Kim Jong-un, the third Kim to rule in Pyongyang, attended a midnight celebration of his father and grandfather's rule with top officials, including his kingmaker uncle Jang Song-thaek.North Korean defectors said army units were expected to contribute for the celebration of Kim's birthday and in turn, the government, which has struggled to feed its people, had handed out extra rations of rice and corn."People are decorating streets for political events. It's never like war time," said Seo Jae-pyoung, a defector who lives in South Korea who spoke last week to an acquaintance in the North. "The government, which normally can't distribute rice, has already given about one week or two week's special rations."North Korea has repeatedly stressed that it fears the United States wants to invade it and has manipulated the United Nations to weaken it. At the weekend, the North rejected the overture by new South Korean President Park as a "cunning" ploy."We will expand in quantity our nuclear weapons capability, which is the treasure of a unified Korea ... that we would never barter at any price," Kim Yong-nam, North Korea's titular head of state, told a gathering of officials and service personnel applauding the achievements of Kim Il-Sung.(Additional reporting by Arshad Mohammed and Kiyoshi Takenaka in TOKYO, Ben Blanchard in Beijing; Somang Yang in SEOUL; Writing by Robert Birsel; Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan)

Assad's forces break rebel blockade in north Syria

By Erika Solomon
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian government troops have broken through a six-month rebel blockade in northern Syria and are now fighting to recapture a vital highway, opposition and state media said on Monday.
Rebels had kept the army bottled up in the Wadi al-Deif and Hamidiya military bases in Idlib province. But on Sunday, President Bashar al-Assad's forces outflanked the rebels and broke through, the pro-government al-Baath newspaper said. The insurgents counter-attacked on Monday but their front has been weakened in recent weeks due to infighting and the deployment of forces to other battles, activists said. The break-out from the bases, located outside Maarat al-Nuaman town, may enable the army to recapture the main route into Aleppo, Syria's largest city, and bolster their fragile supply lines in the heart of the rebel-held north.
Two years into the uprising against Assad, government forces are fighting hard to maintain control of cities. Many rural areas and provincial towns have fallen to the rebels. Aleppo, formerly a business hub, is locked in a stalemate between the rival forces.Rebels had advanced in northern Syria, near Turkey, and southern Deraa province near Jordan. But government forces have kept the rebels out of central Damascus and hold more than half of Homs city, which links the capital to Assad's Alawite heartlands near the Mediterranean coast.March was the bloodiest month yet in a conflict which began as a protest movement against four decades of Assad family rule but has descended into an increasingly sectarian civil war in which at least 70,000 people have been killed.Sunni Muslim rebels are the backbone of the insurgency, while minorities like the Alawites, from an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, have largely fought with Assad, who can count on outside support from Russia and Iran.Western powers, who want to see the end of Assad but do not want to intervene militarily, have been alarmed by the advance of Islamist groups like the Nusra Front in a conflict which has deepened the Middle East's sectarian divide.Diplomatic efforts to find a political solution have gone nowhere.
BREAK THE BLOCKADE
Rebel attacks had forced the army to relinquish many bases in northern Syria and most roads around Aleppo and Idlib province, leaving the remaining government-controlled areas in the north to rely on airlifts for food and weapons."The break of the blockade yesterday allowed the army to drive six lorries full of weapons to get into the bases of Wadi Deif and Hamidiya," Rami Abdelrahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters. The pro-opposition observatory said that despite the army gains, neither side had a clear advantage.Abdelrahman counted more than 50 fighters dead or missing from the battle on Sunday. The army advance was not yet a decisive victory but could reopen battlefields in the north where rebels had the advantage, he said."We will see now what happens but if the rebels can push back the regime, they can avoid a major setback. If the regime is able to hold this opening it could take back the whole road and that will have major strategic consequences," he said.Activists in Maarat al-Nuaman, which has faced daily air strikes due to the blockade, accused rebels of causing their own defeat by depleting their forces in the area.Islamist units that moved in over the weekend accused forces on the ground, lead by the Martyrs of Syria brigade, of failing to secure the base and sending away too many fighters. The Martyrs of Syria brigade said they were pushing their campaign and the Islamist groups had hurt their blockade by interfering.According to Abdelrahamn, many of the main fighting units previously based in the area had moved to Raqqa, Ras al-Ain, and Hassakah, towns in the northeast which rebels recently seized.Government forces have pushed hard near the cities of Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus in recent weeks.
An air strike killed 13 people, including 10 children, in the Damascus district of Qaboun on Sunday, the Observatory said.Activists showed video footage of a boy, his face and arms blackened and bloodied and his leg bandaged, and a photograph of the bodies of three children in blue plastic body bags.
The fighting in Syria has also spilled over with increasing frequency into neighboring Lebanon. Two people, one of them a 13-year-old boy, were killed in the Lebanese border village of Qasr on Sunday by rocket fire from rebel-held positions in Syria, a Lebanese security source said. Six people were wounded.
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman condemned the bombardment, which he said "killed innocent Lebanese who have no connection to the conflict taking place outside their country".(Additional reporting by Dominic Evans; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

Iran's Ahmadinejad due to visit uranium-producing Niger

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to arrive on Monday in Niger, the world's No. 4 uranium producer, where French nuclear group Areva has seen its monopoly tested by a government looking to diversify its partners.Niger is the second of three stops on a trip aimed at deepening Iran's ties with Africa, a continent Ahmadinejad has courted for business deals and diplomatic support as the Islamic Republic becomes increasingly isolated by international sanctions targeting its disputed nuclear program. Some Western analysts say Iran may be close to exhausting its reserves of raw uranium crucial to its nuclear activity and could have to seek out foreign sources of supply.Last week, Iran said operations had begun at two uranium mines and a milling plant in the country and that Western opposition would not slow its nuclear work.Ahmadinejad will be coming from Benin. After Niger he will go on to oil-producing Ghana in what is expected to be his last Africa tour before he steps down in June after completing the second of a maximum two terms as president. It was not clear if any deal with Niger was on the table during Ahmadinejad's trip, but his Nigerien counterpart said last month he wanted to renegotiate the terms of its nuclear business with Areva. On the eve of Ahmadinejad's arrival, a local student's union called for Niger to strike a uranium deal with Iran."Areva has exploited us for over 40 years. What the Nigerien people need is a fair partnership," the union said in statement broadcast on private television stations. There is broad frustration in Niger that one of the world's least developed nations straddling the Sahara has not benefited more from decades of mining by Areva in its remote desert north.Earlier this month, several thousand people protested on the streets of Niamey against Areva, burning French flags.Talks are continuing between France and Niger and Areva has agreed to pay Niger 35 million euros ($45.84 million) in compensation over delays to the planned Imouraren project. But France remains an important partner for Niger, providing some 50 million euros in budgetary support last year on top of various other aid projects.Iran has denied having shortages of raw uranium, says its mines can supply the ore needed for its nuclear activity. But a report this month by U.S. think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists said the scarcity and low quality of Iran's uranium resources compel it "to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium".It added: "Despite the Iranian leadership's assertions to the contrary, Iran's estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program."Iran denies Western accusations that it is stockpiling enriched uranium as potential nuclear weapons fuel, not for future civilian power stations as it maintains.(Reporting by Abdoulaye Massalatchi in Niamey and Fredrik Dahl in Vienna; Writing by David Lewis; editing by Mark Heinrich)

Iran tested three new missiles and plans to unveil its new personnel carriers this week during military exercises being held in Isfahan Province.
Missile and rocket units in the Iranian Army test-fired the three different types of missiles, developed by the Army and Defense Industries, during recent war games, Ground Forces Lt. Cmdr-Gen Kioumars Heydari said on Saturday, Iran's FARS news agency reported. No details were released about the missiles, other than to say they were different from the current Fajr series and Naze’at 10 missiles stocked in the Iranian arsenal.
The Naze’at 10 is a medium range missile, falling short of the longer-range Fajr-5, which can reach up to 75 kilometers (47 miles). The display of military equipment is aimed at showing off the “latest achievements and defensive tactics” of the Islamic Republic. The parades will continue throughout the country through April 18, the country’s National Army Day.Among the missiles fired at Israel by Gaza terrorists during Operation Pillar of Defense last November was the Fajr-5 missile, which reached as far as Tel Aviv. The "home made" M75 missile produced in Gaza, also fired for the first time during that counter terror operation, reached as far as Rishon Lezion and was made with parts that were shipped to the region from Iran.It was during Operation Pillar of Defense that Iran for the first time admitted its involvement in providing military as well as financial support to the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza.
