BOSTON -- The two bombs that ripped through the crowds at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding more than 170, were fashioned out of pressure cookers and packed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings, a person briefed on the investigation said Tuesday. The details on the apparently crude but deadly explosives emerged as investigators appealed to the public for amateur video and photos that might yield clues, and the chief FBI agent in Boston vowed "we will go to the ends of the Earth" to find those responsible.A person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on said that the explosives were put in 6-liter pressure cookers, placed in black duffel bags and left on the ground. They were packed with shrapnel to inflict maximum carnage, the person said. The person said law enforcement officials have some of the bomb components but do not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.A doctor treating the wounded appeared to corroborate the person's account, saying one of the victims was maimed by what looked like ball bearings or BBs. Doctors also said they removed a host of sharp objects from the victims, including nails that were sticking out of one little girl's body. Meantime, the FBI's investigation into the bombings at the Boston Marathon was in full swing Tuesday, with authorities serving a warrant on a suburban Boston home and appealing for any private video, audio and still images of the blasts that killed three and wounded 140.Officials said Tuesday morning that no other undetonated bombs were found, despite rumors of as many as five more. An FBI official said there were no additional threats associated with the Boston bombings. They also made an appeal to have people who videotaped or photographed the area around the detonation to share them with investigators.Officials said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings on one of the city's most famous civic holidays, Patriots Day. But the blasts that left the streets spattered with blood and glass raised fears of a terrorist attack.President Barack Obama Tuesday morning called the bombings an act of terrorism, switching from a day earlier when he was careful not to use the words "terror" or "terrorism" as he spoke at the White House. He said Tuesday morning that investigators have not determined a motive for the blasts. Nor do they have knowledge of whether an individual or a group was responsible.A European security official said Tuesday initial evidence indicates that the attacks were not the work of suicide bombers."So far, investigators believe it was not the work of suicide bombers, but it is still too early to rule it out completely," said the official, who spoke from the United States on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the U.S. investigation. The Pakistani Taliban, which has threatened attacks in the United States because of its support for the Pakistani government, on Tuesday denied any role in the marathon bombings. The fiery explosions took place about 10 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the route.Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories. Victims suffered broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums. Surgeons said victims appeared to have been hit with BBs or ball bearings. As many as two unexploded bombs were found near the end of the 26.2-mile course as part of what appeared to be a well-coordinated attack, but they were safely disarmed, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the continuing investigation.WBZ-TV reported late Monday that law enforcement officers were searching an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that a search warrant related to the investigation into the explosions was served Monday night in Revere, but provided no further details. Some investigators were seen leaving the Revere house early Tuesday carrying brown paper bags, plastic trash bags and a duffel bag.Police said three people were killed. An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, according to a person who talked to a friend of the family and spoke on condition of anonymity. The person said the boy's mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race.
Hospitals reported at least 144 people injured, at least 17 of them critically. At least eight children were being treated at hospitals.Tim Davey of Richmond, Va., was with his wife, Lisa, and children near a medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners when the injured began arriving. "They just started bringing people in with no limbs," he said."Most everybody was conscious," Lisa Davey said. "They were very dazed."The Boston Marathon is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious races and about 23,000 runners participated. The race honored the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shooting with a special mile marker in Monday's race.Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio previously said there was "special significance" to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary School. One of the city's biggest annual events, the race winds up near Copley Square, not far from the landmark Prudential Center and the Boston Public Library. It is held on Patriots Day, which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution, at Concord and Lexington in 1775.Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis asked people to stay indoors or go back to their hotel rooms and avoid crowds as bomb squads methodically checked parcels and bags left along the race route. He said investigators didn't know whether the bombs were hidden in mailboxes or trash cans.He said authorities had received "no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen" at the race. The Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft within 3.5 miles of the site."We still don't know who did this or why," Obama said at the White House, adding, "Make no mistake: We will get to the bottom of this."
With scant official information to guide them, members of Congress said there was little or no doubt it was an act of terrorism."We just don't know whether it's foreign or domestic," said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.A few miles away from the finish line and around the same time, a fire broke out at the John F. Kennedy Library. The police commissioner said that it may have been caused by an incendiary device but that it was not clear whether it was related to the bombings.
The first explosion occurred on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the finish line, and some people initially thought it was a celebratory cannon blast. When the second bomb went off, spectators' cheers turned to screams. As sirens blared, emergency workers and National Guardsmen who had been assigned to the race for crowd control began climbing over and tearing down temporary fences to get to the blast site.
The bombings occurred about four hours into the race and two hours after the men's winner crossed the finish line. By that point, more than 17,000 of the athletes had finished the marathon, but thousands more were still running. The attack may have been timed for maximum carnage: The four-hour mark is typically a crowded time near the finish line because of the slow-but-steady recreational runners completing the race and because of all the friends and relatives clustered around to cheer them on.Runners in the medical tent for treatment of dehydration or other race-related ills were pushed out to make room for victims of the bombing.
A woman who was a few feet from the second bomb, Brighid Wall, 35, of Duxbury, said that when it exploded, runners and spectators froze, unsure of what to do. Her husband threw their children to the ground, lay on top of them and another man lay on top of them and said, "Don't get up, don't get up."
After a minute or so without another explosion, Wall said, she and her family headed to a Starbucks and out the back door through an alley. Around them, the windows of the bars and restaurants were blown out.
She said she saw six to eight people bleeding profusely, including one man who was kneeling, dazed, with blood trickling down his head. Another person was on the ground covered in blood and not moving.
"My ears are zinging. Their ears are zinging," Wall said. "It was so forceful. It knocked us to the ground."

Obama Adversaries to be Blamed For Boston Attack?

Democratic operatives urged President to exploit terror
Paul Joseph Watson Infowars.com  April 16, 2013
Rahm Emanuel’s call to “never let a serious crisis go to waste” is really going to come to the fore this week if yesterday’s Boston Marathon attack is blamed on Barack Obama’s political opposition, with Democratic operatives having previously urged the President to exploit terror in order to reinvigorate his presidency.

Image: Twitter
Suggestions that the bombing could have been the work of Tea Partiers or anti-tax protesters have swirled despite the fact that the only suspect being questioned in response to the attack is a Saudi national.
Numerous establishment media outlets have also savaged Alex Jones for suggesting that the federal government could have been complicit in the bombing. Jones’ logic is based on a fact that the New York Times reported on last year, that many of the recent domestic terror plots in the United States “were facilitated by the F.B.I.,” a history that goes back until at least 1993 when the FBI gave terrorists real explosives with which to conduct the first WTC bombing.Indeed, under the auspices of Operation Gladio, the idea of governments carrying out acts of terror and blaming them on political adversaries to alter the political climate was far from a “conspiracy theory,” it was an admitted fact.Operation Gladio was a NATO cold war “stay behind” project designed to demonize political opposition and “force the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security,” according to the testimony of former Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra. In 2000, an Italian parliamentary investigation found that the 1980 Bologna train bombing, which killed 85 people, was carried out by “men inside Italian state institutions and … men linked to the structures of United States intelligence.”“You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game,” Vinciguerra explained in sworn testimony.“The reason was quite simple. They were supposed to force these people, the Italian public, to turn to the state to ask for greater security. This is the political logic that lies behind all the massacres and the bombings which remain unpunished, because the state cannot convict itself or declare itself responsible for what happened,” he added.Given the fact that Barack Obama’s political career was launched in the living room of infamous domestic terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, the notion that his administration would use terror to further their agenda is hardly a far fetched idea.Early evidence also clearly suggests that authorities had prior knowledge of the bombings and were running drills immediately beforehand centered around the same premise while telling marathon runners not to panic. Police later denied they had any warnings or were running drills, contradicting eyewitness reports. However, while any suspicion of state involvement has been derided as a baseless conspiracy theory, claims of conservatives being responsible for the attack have begun to proliferate, despite there being zero evidence to suggest such a scenario.Former Bill Clinton advisor David Axelrod hinted on MSNBC today that the attack could have been a form of tax protest.“We really don’t know who did this — it was tax day. Was it someone who was pro–you know, you just don’t know,” he said.A US Forest Service PR rep also took to Twitter to blame the bombing on the Tea Party, writing, “I fear nutty logic goes like this … Patriots Day. April 15. Tax Day. Bad government. Boston. Tea Party. Let’s show ‘em.”Following the Aurora theater massacre last year, Time Magazine lamented the fact that Obama had not been forceful enough in seizing upon the tragedy to reinvigorate the evisceration of the second amendment. However, others have gone even further, to the point of seemingly welcoming terror attacks and bloodshed as a means of helping Obama pose as a tough leader and in turn rallying Americans around his big government agenda.During a 2010 appearance on Chris Matthews’ Hardball, former Clintonite and Democrat operative Mark Penn brazenly stated that Obama would need to take advantage of a massacre to get fresh momentum behind his presidency.“Remember, President Clinton reconnected through Oklahoma, right?” Penn told Matthews. “And the president right now seems removed. It wasn’t until that speech [after the bombing] that [Clinton] really clicked with the American public. Obama needs a similar defining moment,” said Penn.Penn was not alone in invoking how an act of mass bloodshed could ride to Obama’s political rescue. In an article concerning Obama’s plunging popularity before the 2010 mid-terms, Robert Shapiro, former senior advisor to President Bill Clinton, wrote that the only thing that could conceivably rescue Obama’s presidency was a terror attack on the scale of the Oklahoma City bombing.“The bottom line here is that Americans don’t believe in President Obama’s leadership,” said Shapiro, adding, “He has to find some way….of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can’t think of how he could do that.”Given the fact that the FBI admittedly facilitates terrorist attacks, in addition to top Democratic strategists continually calling on Obama to exploit terrorist attacks in the spirit of Rahm Emanuel’s urge to “never let a serious crisis go to waste,” should any link to a Tea Partier, a libertarian, an anti-tax protester or any political adversary of Obama emerge in the coming days, it will be ruthlessly exploited by the Obama administration to further entrench the notion - habitually reiterated by the likes of the DHS - that liberty lovers are dangerous terrorists who need to be silenced, discredited, disenfranchised and pushed to the fringes of society.

WHAT, ME WORRY?

Saudi Questioned in Boston Terrorist Attack

It took the White House an hour or more until it could bring itself to say that the attacks in Boston were “terror.” A Saudi student is under questioning. But it is just an “isolated” incident.

Police are questioning a Saudi Arabian national for the terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon that killed at least three people, one of them an eight-year-old boy, and wounded 140 others Monday. More than a dozen are in critical condition, an indication that the death toll may rise. The bombs were packed with ball bearings, designed to cause maximum physical damage. Victims lost dozens of limbs in the twin bombings.The suspect is 20 years old, in the United States on a students’ visa, and is under guard at the Boston hospital where he is being treated for severe burns. He was detained approximately two hours after the bombing at the finish line. CBS News reported that Boston police have  a video of a man bringing multiple backpacks to the location of the blast.Boston police Tuesday morning searched an apartment in a Boston suburb as part of the investigation.However, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis insisted,  “There is no suspect. There are people we’re talking to.”President Barack Obama was unable to utter the word “terror” in his initial reaction to the bombings, as if doing so would be an admission that the United States is so secure that it is unthinkable that terrorists could operate in the country.Sometimes it seems the government wears a proud suit of armor in la-la land, re-living a 1950s cover of the Saturday Evening Post, an exterior that lulls people into thinking that there are no rotten apples in the American pie.The president indeed had to be careful not label the attack “terror” before being sure. “We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts,” Obama said. “But make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this, and we will find out who did this; we’ll find out why they did this.”It will take a thorough investigation to find out what ever every person not in a State Dept. straight jacket knows – the terrorist or terrorists who carried out the attack want to destroy the United States.The White House later stated that the attack was “an act of terror.” It took an hour to put aside the possibility that a mentally ill person blew up peoples; limbs. It too an hour to discard the original report that a gas line had accidentally burst.American media, remaining politically correct not to insult Islam and inflame Muslim anger, God forbid,  have not reminded citizens that Saudi Arabian radical Islamic fundamentalists were involved in the 9/11 attacks.A total of five bombs were found in the Boston area, including one that exploded at the John F. Kennedy library, causing no injuries.The timing of the attack, coincidental or not with “Patriot’s Day,” underlines the motives of the international terrorist campaign against the non-Muslim West.But the official thinking, such it is called, is that everything is just fine while Rome, make that Washington, is burning.”Federal officials tonight say there is no reason to think that this is part of any larger threat,” NBC reported. “At this point they believe it is confined to Boston, but a meeting tonight will decide whether any kind of national alert will be sent out.”Tactically, the attack very likely was not part of a “larger threat”, just an “isolated” incident, just like the 1993 bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center, killing six people and wounding more than 1,000 others;
And just like the “isolated incident” in Oklahoma Cavity in 1995, when a car bomb killed 168 people; And just like the 9/11 attacks; and just like the 2012 car bomb that was discovered in Times Square but failed to detonate’And just like the isolated bombs placed in 2010 on two cargo planes bound from Yemen to the United States; And just like the 2011 pipe bomb that was discovered along the route of the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial march in Spokane, Wash.Officials are well aware that there is a worldwide of terror. They know very well that the attacks on the Boston Marathon are not “isolated” incidents. But it is more important for officials, from the president on down, to maintain a mood of calm, to show Americans they are in control. But they aren’t.

Jordan extremist praises Boston bombing

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The head of an extremist Jordanian Muslim Salafi group said early Tuesday that he was "happy to see the horror in America" after the explosions in Boston."American blood isn't more precious than Muslim blood," said Mohammad al-Chalabi, who was convicted in an al-Qaida-linked plot to attack U.S. and other Western diplomatic missions in Jordan in 2003."Let the Americans feel the pain we endured by their armies occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and killing our people there," he said early Tuesday.
Al-Chalabi served seven years in prison for his part in the foiled attack. His group is outlawed in Jordan.
A Mideast counterterrorism official based in Jordan said the blasts "carry the hallmark of an organized terrorist group, like al-Qaida." He did not give actual evidence linking al-Qaida to the bombing."From the little information available, one can say it was a well-coordinated, well-targeted and near-simultaneous attack," he said. "Luckily, the amount of explosives used is small, judging from the casualty figure and explosion area."A Jordanian security official said security was beefed up around the U.S. Embassy in Amman after the bombing in Boston."As the unfortunate news unfolded, we immediately stationed more police patrols around the embassy," he said. He declined to disclose any details, citing the sensitive nature of the information. Both officials insisted on anonymity, as they were not authorized to brief reporters on security matters.

U.S. investigators hunt for clues in Boston bombing

By Scott Malone
BOSTON (Reuters) - A large area of downtown Boston remained cordoned off by police on Tuesday as authorities pursued an investigation into the two bombs that exploded at the finish of the Boston Marathon a day earlier, killing three people and wounding more than 100.A stretch of Boylston Street and the blocks around it were closed to traffic as police searched for evidence of the identity of who placed the bombs packed with ball bearings to maximize casualties. The White House said the bombings would be treated as "an act of terror" and President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible would "feel the full weight of justice."The attack was the worst on American soil since September 11, 2001, when al Qaeda militants flew hijacked airliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people.
In Boston, dozens of police and national guard vehicles were parked around the cordoned-off area, which was empty of cars and pedestrians as authorities hunted for clues.A banner that had marked the race's finish line still hung over the deserted street.Local media reported that police searched an apartment in Revere, a city about six miles northeast of Boston. Katherine Gulotta, a spokeswoman for the FBI, which has taken over the lead in the investigation, declined to confirm or deny the reports. She said police planned to brief the media at 9:30 a.m.Obama was updated on the investigation overnight by his homeland security and counterterrorism aide, Lisa Monaco, a White House official said."The president made clear that he expects to be kept up to date on any developments," the official said.Obama is due to be briefed on the explosions later this morning by FBI Director Robert Mueller, Monaco, and other senior staff, the official said.White House officials and investigators said it was too early to say whether the Boston attacks were carried out by a foreign or homegrown group or to identify a motive. In 1995, far-right militant and U.S. citizen Timothy McVeigh set off a massive truck bomb that destroyed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. Two years earlier, Islamist militants bombed the twin towers of the World Trade Center, killing six people and wounding more than 1,000.Hospitals in the Boston area were planning surgeries for some of the victims, many of whom sustained lower leg injuries in the blasts, said Peter Fagenholz, a trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital."We're seeing a lot of shrapnel injuries" from small metal debris, Fagenholz told reporters outside the hospital. Doctors treated 29 people, of whom eight were in a critical condition.
An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, the Boston Globe reported, citing two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation. A 2-year-old was being treated at Boston Children's Hospital for a head wound, the hospital said.
MAJOR CITIES ON ALERT
The blasts put police on alert in major cities across the United States, including Washington and New York City, the sites of the September 11 attacks. The annual Boston Marathon, held since 1897, attracts an estimated half-million spectators and some 20,000 participants every year.In Britain, organizers said the London Marathon would go ahead on Sunday despite the Boston attack, but security was being reviewed.
The Madrid Marathon also planned to proceed on Sunday, but security plans were under review, a Spanish official said."After what happened in Boston we'll have to look into whether we need to review our plans. Since yesterday we are coordinating with municipal security and local government," Pedro Rumbao, director of the Madrid marathon, told Spanish National Radio.German Chancellor Angela Merkel Joined world leaders in condemning the blasts."Nothing can justify such an insidious attack on people who had come together for a peaceful sports event. I hope that the person or people guilty (of this attack) can be brought to justice," she said in a statement.(Additional reporting by Mark Felsenthal in Washington, Pritha Sarkar, Patrick Johnston, Martyn Herman and David Cutler in London and Gareth Jones in Berlin.; Writing by Andrew Heavens; editing by Jon Boyle and Christopher Wilson)

METEORS HIT THE EARTH

REVELATION 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

REVELATION 8:12-13
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

Ball of fire lights up skies above Spain (VIDEO)

A brilliant ball of flame streaked across the sky above the Spanish capital Madrid, dazzling stargazers and astronomers alike. The celestial display was so bright it could be seen across the entire country. The eye-popping moment was caught on camera by the Hita Observatory at the University of Huelva at around 11:45pm local time (2145 GMT). The object struck the atmosphere above the Villamuelas district in the province of Toledo, southwest of Madrid.“The impact was so abrupt that the object immediately caught fire, creating a ball of flame around 100 kilometers above the Earth,” Jose Maria Madiedo of the University of Huelva told the Huffington Post. The meteor then shot towards Madrid at over 75,000 kilometers an hour before disintegrating completely at an altitude of 70 kilometers. The Spanish Institution for the Study of Meteors and Meteorites, which tracked the fireball, classified the meteorite as a piece of a comet that was flying by Earth. The explosion on impact was so bright that it could be viewed as far away as the southern Spanish cities of Seville, Granada and Murcia.“I was looking up at the sky when there was a flash that in a matter of seconds began to grow,” astronomer Leonor Ana Hernandez said to the Huffington Post. “When the explosion happened, everything around us turned white for a few seconds,” and several green and blue followed the initial explosion, she added. The explosion as the fireball entered the atmosphere sparked comparisons with the 500-kiloton explosion caused by the meteorite that fell over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February.Although the meteorite measured only a few meters in diameter, scientists estimated that the initial explosion was comparable in power to a nuclear bomb. The impact and sound of the blast reached the ground minutes after the explosion, causing havoc and panic in Chelyabinsk. While most of the meteorite burned up during its descent, the remaining parts showered over the region, possibly adding to the damage and injuries.

DEAD ANIMALS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

Thousands of giant snails causing problems for Florida homeowners

South Florida residents are being warned to be on the lookout for one of the world's most destructive invasive species: the giant African land snail, which can grow as big as a rat.The huge mollusks were first spotted in Florida in 2011, and their numbers are growing, Reuters reports. More than 1,000 are being caught each week in Miami-Dade County and more will continue to emerge from hibernation in the coming weeks. The snails can gnaw through stucco and plastic, and attack "over 500 known species of plants ... pretty much anything that's in their path and green,"  Denise Feiber, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, told Reuters. In some Caribbean countries, such as Barbados, which are overrun with the creatures, the snails' shells blow out tires on the highway and turn into hurling projectiles from lawnmower blades, while their slime and excrement coat walls and pavement.
"It becomes a slick mess," Feiber said.A typical snail can produce about 1,200 eggs a year and the creatures are a particular pest in homes because of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need for their shells. The snails also carry a parasitic rat lungworm that can cause illness in humans, including a form of meningitis, Feiber said, although no such cases have yet been identified in the United States.
Experts gathered last week in Gainesville, Florida, for a Giant African Land Snail Science Symposium, to seek the best ways to eradicate the mollusks, including use of a stronger bait approved recently by the federal government.Authorities are also expanding a series of ads across the state on buses, billboards and movie theaters, urging the public to be on the lookout."They're huge, they move around, they look like they're looking at you ... communicating with you, and people enjoy them for that," Feiber said. "But they don't realize the devastation they can create if they are released into the environment where they don't have any natural enemies and they thrive."

Huge earthquake hits Iran, hundreds feared dead

By Yeganeh Torbati
DUBAI (Reuters) - A major earthquake struck Iran near the border with Pakistan on Tuesday and an Iranian official said hundreds of people were feared to have been killed.Tremors from the 7.8 magnitude quake were also felt in India and Gulf states."It was the biggest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and we are expecting hundreds of dead," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 5:44 a.m. ET at a depth of 15.2 km (9.4 miles).People in the city of Zahedan poured into the streets when the earthquake struck, Iran's Fars news agency reported. All communications in the area have been cut, the Iranian Red Crescent's Mahmoud Mozaffar told state television. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected area, he said."In the aftermath of this earthquake five evaluation teams from the Khash and Saravan branches were sent to the area to assess damage," Mozaffar said. The epicenter was in southeast Iran in an area of mountains and desert, 201 km (125 miles) southeast of Zahedan and 250 km northwest of Turbat in Pakistan, USGS said.On April 9, a powerful 6.3 magnitude quake struck close to Iran's only nuclear power station, killing 37 people, injuring 850 and devastating two villages. Most of Iran's nuclear-related facilities are located in central Iran or its west, including the Bushehr nuclear power plant on the Gulf coast. A U.S. Institute for Science and International Security map did not show any nuclear-linked facilities in southeastern Iran close to Pakistan.
SITTING ON THE FAULTLINE
Iran sits on major geological faultlines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 that flattened the city of Bam, in Iran's far southeast, killing more than 25,000 people. This quake also shook tall buildings in India's capital New Delhi, sending people running into the streets, witnesses said. People also evacuated buildings in Qatar and Dubai, residents said."I was working and my work station was shaking," said Viidhu Sekhri, 35, an underwriter at a New Delhi insurance company. "Then it was a bit shaky so we just rushed outside."Earlier in the day two smaller tremors were felt in India's Himalayan region close to the Chinese border. An official at India's disaster management authority said the tremors felt in New Delhi and across northern India were because of the earthquake in Iran.

Iran says it test-fires new land-to-sea missile in Gulf

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran test-fired a new land-to-sea ballistic missile in the Gulf, a senior official said on Tuesday, days before an annual ceremony meant to showcase its military muscle at a time of rising tension with the West over its nuclear activity.Israel has publicly warned of possible air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites if Tehran does not resolve Western suspicions it is developing nuclear weapons know-how under cover of a declared civilian atomic energy programme, something Tehran denies.Iran has threatened to hit Israel and U.S. bases in the region if it comes under attack, and also to block the Strait of Hormuz, the neck of the Gulf through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports pass."The defense ministry has been able to test a new missile in the Persian Gulf which has a high ability to hit targets," General Majid Bokaei, Iran's deputy defense minister, was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA, which described the missile as a ballistic missile."This new missile, which has been equipped with a surface-to-surface missile system, exits the atmosphere after being launched, re-enters it at high speed, and completely destroys the target vessel or warship."Bokaei did not say when the missile was tested or give a specific indication of its range. "When this missile was tested, all the enemies' destroyers and ships retreated from near our borders," he said, according to IRNA.The Islamic Republic will mark its National Army Day on April 18, an occasion meant to celebrate its armed forces and likely unveil military advances.Iran often announces new weapons achievements, although these are difficult to verify independently. In August it said it had test-launched a more accurate short-range missile capable of hitting land and sea targets within a range of around 300 km (180 miles).Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), called the announcement another example of Iran flaunting new military muscle without providing proof.
"It might very well be a weapon with a certain capability but it is extremely hard to say. We always have to be aware of the propaganda value of all these claims," he told Reuters."I think in general Iran will have a difficult time to develop really advanced modern missiles ... Opponents are increasingly capable of, at least in theory, destroying these kinds of weapons before they are even being deployed."Iran has made "robust strides" in developing its ballistic missile capabilities, the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies wrote in a 2010 assessment. The IISS also said, however, that Iran's arsenal suffered from poor accuracy. All of Tehran's ballistic missiles would be capable of carrying a nuclear payload, the IISS said at the time.(Reporting By Yeganeh Torbati in Dubai and Fredrik Dahl in Vienna; editing by Mark Heinrich)

China points finger at U.S. over Asia-Pacific tensions

By Ben Blanchard
BEIJING (Reuters) - China's defense ministry made a thinly veiled attack on the United States on Tuesday for increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific by ramping up its military presence and alliances in the region, days after the top U.S. diplomat visited Beijing.China is uneasy with what the United States has called the "rebalancing" of forces as Washington winds down the war in Afghanistan and renews its attention further east.China says the policy has emboldened Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam in longstanding territorial disputes with Beijing.China faces "multiple and complicated security threats" despite its growing influence, the Ministry of Defense said in its annual white paper, adding that the U.S. strategy meant "profound changes" for Asia."There are some countries which are strengthening their Asia Pacific military alliances, expanding their military presence in the region and frequently make the situation there tenser," the ministry said in the 40-page document, in a clear reference to the United States.Such moves "do not accord with the developments of the times and are not conducive towards maintaining regional peace and stability", ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told reporters. The official People's Liberation Army Daily went further, saying in a commentary on Monday that China needed to beef up its defenses to deal with a hostile West bent on undermining it."Hostile Western forces have intensified their strategy to westernize and split China, and employed every possible means to contain and control our country's development," it said.On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry defended the re-orientation of U.S. foreign policy towards Asia as he ended a trip to the region dominated by concerns about North Korea's nuclear program. While China has been angered by North Korea's behavior, including its third nuclear test in February, it has also made clear it considers U.S. displays of force in response to Pyongyang's behavior to be a worrisome development.
China is North Korea's most important diplomatic and financial backer -- the two fought together in the 1950-53 Korean war -- although the ministry's Yang would not be drawn on the subject aside from repeating a call for peace and dialogue.
JAPAN "MAKING TROUBLE"
China's own military moves have worried others in the region, too.China unveiled another double-digit rise in military expenditure last month, to 740.6 billion yuan ($119 billion) for 2013, and is involved in protracted and often ugly disputes over a series of islands in the East and South China Seas."On the issues concerning China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, some neighboring countries are taking actions that complicate or exacerbate the situation, and Japan is making trouble over the Diaoyu Islands issue," the white paper said.Japan's government said it had lodged a protest with Beijing about that comment. "There exists no territorial issue to be solved over the Senkaku", Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshige Seko said in Tokyo. The dispute with Japan over the uninhabited islands, which China calls the Diaoyu and Japan calls the Senkaku, has escalated in recent months to the point where China and Japan have scrambled fighter jets and patrol ships shadow each other. The waters around the islands in the East China Sea are rich fishing grounds and have potentially huge oil and gas reserves.Vietnam, Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines also have conflicting claims with China in parts of the South China Sea. China lays claim to almost the whole of the sea, which is criss-crossed by crucial shipping lanes. The U.S. shift comes as China boosts military spending and builds submarines, surface ships and anti-ship ballistic missiles as part of its naval modernization, and has tested emerging technology aimed at destroying missiles in mid-air.China has repeatedly said the world has nothing to fear from its military spending, which it says is needed for legitimate defensive purposes in a complex and changing world, and that the sums spent pale in comparison with U.S. defense expenditure.(Additional reporting by Michael Martina and Kiyoshi Takenaka in TOKYO; Editing by Paul Tait and Alex Richardson)

Pope and Patriarch divided over women's role

Two different perspectives: While Kirill appeals against radical feminism, Bergoglio praises the female mind

Giacomo Galeazzi vatican city In St. Peter's Square Francis started off with the evangelical story of the resurrection to promote the “primary and fundamental” role of women in the early Church and today's Church.” John Paul II had spoken about the female brain and Benedict XVI poured praise on female figures such as Hildegard of Bingen, Dorothy Day and Etty Hillesumon, on more than one occasion. Pope Francis appeared to be taking a step forward by washing the feet of two young female offenders during his recent visit to the Casal del Marmo prison in Rome. But any kind of majorly revolutionary move from the Pope, such as conceding the priesthood to women, seems unlikely. The Pope's emphasis on the role of women in the Church could mean that the Church is going to pay systematically greater attention to the female question. A theologian who is close to the new Pope, German cardinal, Walter Kasper, recently asked himself: “Can't today's Church do something similar to what it did back in the 3rd-4th century when it created a sort of sui generis ministry with female deacons to baptise adult women? Given today's challenges, couldn't it establish a ministry for women (not the diaconate) but a body with an independent profile, as it did in the past?”The German Episcopal Conference has expressed its commitment “to promoting the role of women further, respecting their responsibility, entrusted to all Christians for the life of the Church” and “increasing the number of women in positions of responsibility.” The Archbishop of Milan, Angelo Scola, underlined that Francis' focus on the role of women “is hugely important.” But while Rome appears to be opening up to the gentler sex, Moscow remains closed to to it. The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russias, Kirill, warns against the “danger” of feminism, condemning the existence of a propaganda which encourages women to take on roles that jeopardise their household and family duties. “I believe that this phenomenon, feminism as it is called, is very dangerous,” Kirill said in a speech to an organisation of Ukrainian Orthodox women, the content of which is published on the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church. “Feminist organisations proclaim a pseudo-freedom for women, which must be manifested outside of marriage and the family,” Kirill said, adding that “it is the man's job to take care of things outside the home; he must work and earn, while the woman's place is inside the home, looking after the family.” “If this incredibly important role the woman has is broken, then everything else will collapse along with it: family and, in a broader sense, the country,” he added. Nevertheless, Kirill did say he was in favour of women pursuing careers, as long as they got their priorities straight, fulfilling their duties as wives and mothers. The Patriarch’s statements came in light of the latest protest staged by feminist group Femen, which focused its attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is currently attending the Hannover Messe show. Topless Femen members turned up at the fair shouting “Fuck the dictator”, provoking a half ironic, half scornful reaction from the Kremlin's leader. The Russian Orthodox Patriarch was also one of the major critics of the Pussy Riot, the punk feminist group, whose anti-Putin performance in Moscow Cathedral led to one of its members being sentenced to two years in a labour camp. So the Pope and the Patriarch are divided over the issue of women. Rome is supporting them, while Moscow is condemning feminism.

Pope warns against careerism in the Church

Pope Francis

Yesterday Pope Francis held a mass at the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls: “Inconsistency is undermining the Church’s credibility. One cannot proclaim the Gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness of one’s life ”

Giacomo Galeazzi Rome “Inconsistency is undermining the Church’s credibility. One cannot proclaim the Gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness of one’s life.” This was Pope Francis' message as he warned against careerism during yesterday's Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls – his first visit as Bishop of Rome, to the basilica that houses St. Paul's tomb. Francis was welcomed by the Benedictine community and Abbot Edmund Power explained that “As all Popes do, Francis entered the courtyard with the four rows of columns, where the Basilica's main façade is and after greeting the community, he put on his sacred vestments.” After making his entry in a great procession, Francis presided mass from his throne in the apse. When the mass ended, a moment was dedicated to the veneration of icon of the Virgin Mary, before which St. Ignatius of Loyola pronounced his religious profession in the 1500's. “Inconsistency on the part of pastors and the faithful between what they say and what they do, between word and manner of life, is undermining the Church’s credibility,” Bergoglio lamented. He went on to add that “Those who listen to us and observe us must be able to see in our actions what they hear from our lips, and so give glory to God!” We must, he stressed, bear witness to Christ by giving ourselves without calculation, sometimes even at the cost of our own life.” The Pope then used some strong words, calling all believers to ask themselves about the “idols” that take over the place in our hearts that should be reserved for God. The Argentinean pope therefore invited people “to strip [themselves] of [their] many idols and to worship him alone. Idols in which we seek safety and often place our trust in.” “These are idols we often keep well hidden away.” “They could be ambition, careerism, a taste for success, placing ourselves at the centre of things, a tendency to put ourselves above others, the expectation that we are the ones who have exclusive control of our lives, a sin to which we are strongly tied and many others.” “This evening – Francis confided to the clergy and faithful gathered in St. Paul's Basilica – I would like one question to echo through the hearts of each and every one of us and I would like us to answer it sincerely: have I thought about which hidden idol in my life is preventing me from worshipping the Lord?” “Striping ourselves of our most hidden idols and choosing to put the Lord at the centre, making him the main pathway in our lives,” Pope Francis said. “Dear brothers and sisters,” concluded Pope Francis, “each day the Lord calls us to follow him with courage and fidelity; he has made us the great gift of choosing us as his disciples; he sends us to proclaim him with joy as the Risen one, but he asks us to do so by word and by the witness of our lives, in daily life. The Lord is the only God of our lives , and he invites us to strip ourselves of our many idols and to worship him alone.” Francis illustrated “the ‘hidden’ saints” as “a sort of ‘middle class of holiness’.” “Announcing, witnessing, worshipping.” These are the three verbs the Pope wanted faithful to reflect on as he celebrated mass in close proximity to “the tomb of St. Paul, a humble and great Apostle of the Lord , who announced him with the word, witnessed him with martyrdom and worshipped him wholeheartedly."The Pope stressed the fact that “Peter and the Apostles' announcement is not just made up of words. Loyalty to Christ touches their lives, which change and gain a new direction and they bear witness to the faith and the announcement of Christ with their lives.” Abbot Edmund Power said: “The Pope's visits are immensely important to us because we believe our Benedictine community was founded around 720 by Pope Gregory II, for the purpose of assisting the Pope in welcoming pilgrims on their visits to Paul's tomb. So there has always been this special bond between us and the Pope, the Bishop of Rome. And we see ourselves as the papal monastery. This is Pope Francis' first visit, him being a member of a religious order (a Jesuit) like us. We are very happy to have welcomed him in St. Paul's Basilica, in “his” monastic community, which is here to assist him his role as Bishop of Rome and pastor of the universal church, serving pilgrims who come to Rome.”People often speak of the Bishop of Rome's Petrine ministry. But ever since the beginning, the Church of Rome has not just been Peter's Church: it is both Peter and Paul's Church and the two apostles together are symbols of a complete Church, of its integrity, unity, centrality, missionary meaning and dynamism; both aspects are equally important. In my eyes, he is the successor of peter in his ministry, a “Peter-Pauline” ministry. This is what can be said by an abbot from St. Paul Outside the Walls.” Even the prospect of “being whipped, insulted or imprisoned” did not stop him.“And what about us?” he asked: “are we capable of bringing the Word of God into our lives' various circles? Are we able to talk about Christ and what he represents to us, with our families and people that are part of our everyday lives?” “Faith – he pointed out – comes from listening and is strengthened by announcing it” But this announcement “is not just about words.” The testimony of the early communities shows us that “faithfulness to Christ touched their lives, which changed and were given a new direction. It is by living that Christians bear witness to the faith and the announcement of Christ.”Pope Francis contrasted this transparency of faith with the “idols” that detach us from faith. Among these, he mentioned the “careerism” of clergymen. “Each and every one of us is conscious or perhaps unconscious of attributing more or less importance to things, creating a precise order. Worshiping the Lord means giving him the space he should be given in our lives; worshipping the Lord means acknowledging and believing – not just through words – that only He is is the real guide in our lives; worshipping the Lord means standing before him in the conviction that he is the only God, the God of our lives and of our history.”

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
