1 CHRONICLES 17:6-14
6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?
7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,
10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.
11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.
13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:

While emphasizing the need for Israeli security, United States President Barack Obama mentioned "two states for two people" during his joint press conference with Prime Minster Benyamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. He called for an "independent Palestinian state" living "side by side in peace and security with Israel," but made sure not to give the impression he was imposing any foreign dictates not requested by the indigenous population."My main goal on this trip is to speak to the Israeli people," he stated. With regards to the Iranian nuclear threat, the instability of Syria and global terror he said, "we've got your back... you're in a tough neighborhood that just got tougher." But President Obama refused to tell his hosts how they should run things, commenting, "I purposely did not want to come here and make some big announcement that did not match up to the realities here. I wanted to ask questions before I talk... I wanted a better understanding of what the constraints are." He said that while he didn't want to have a false "Pollyannish" view of reality, he imagined the entire Middle East in a new technologically advanced and economically stable era of joint cooperation. Such statements mirror President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Netanyahu.

the visit are the residents of the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem's Old
City. Residents there, said an individual who lives there, are about to find themselves under a virtual “siege,” said S.

U.S. President Barack Obama and Prime
Minister Binyamin Netanyahu held a good-spirited news conference after
their working meeting Wednesday, which began at about 5:30 p.m. Israel
time and lasted close to three hours.Netanyahu said that Israel "will never hand over the right to defend
ourselves, even to our best friend – and we have no better friend than
the United States." He added, "Sanctions
on Iran have not succeeded in stopping the nuclear move, and you know
that a credible military threat must be added to the sanctions.""We do not have a policy of containment when it comes to a nuclear
Iran," Obama said. "We prefer to resolve this diplomatically, and there
is still time to do so. The international community will continue to
increase pressure on Iran, and we will continue to consult closely with
Israel."
He repeated that "all options are on the table."The press conference was scheduled to begin at 8:10 p.m., or 4:10 p.m. New York City time, but began a little later. When asked why the United States is not intervening directly in the civil war in Syria, Obama said, "To the extent possible I want to make sure that we are working as an international community. This is a world problem, not a U.S. problem. So we will continue to work in an international framework," regarding Syria."I am absolutely convinced that the President is determined to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said in response to a question. "I also appreciate that he said that the Jewish people have returned to their land in order to be masters of their own fate. That sums up our common view. A nuclear Iran is a grave threat. The U.S. is committed to deal with it, Israel is committed to deal with it. Israel has a right to independently defend itself from any threat.""Our intelligence cooperation on this issue – the consultation between our militaries – is unprecedented," Obama said. "There is not a lot of daylight between our countries' assessments as to where Iran is right now, in its nuclear weapons program. Each country has to make its own decisions. Israel is differently situated from the US. I would not expect that the Prime Minister would defer decisions on his country's security to other countries. I would not do that regarding my country's security."I have said to Bibi that I think there is time to solve this diplomatically. Will Iran seize that opportunity? It would be in Iran's interest if this were solved diplomatically."Netanyahu added, "If Iran decides to actually manufacture the weapon it would take them about a year, although they could defer that for a long time. To make a weapon you need the actual weapon [the warhead – ed.] and you need enriched uranium. Iran is pursuing it. They have not yet reached the red line that I described in my UN speech. On these matters we share information and we have a common assessment. Whatever time is left, there is not a lot of time left."

In a short documentary
released this week, William “Bill” Langfan, a World War II veteran and
witness to the Nazi death camps, warns that U.S. President Barack
Obama’s pressuring Israel to retreat to 1948 Armistice lines is another
version of the 1938 Munich appeasement of Adolf Hitler. In the 15-minute-long film, Langfan, who participated in the 1944
Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge, remembers reading about
the shameful sellout of Czechoslovakia by Britain's Neville Chamberlain
as a 16-year-old growing up in New York. By making it impossible for
Czechoslovakia to defend itself and forcing it to relinquish the
Sudetenland to Hitler, the West sealed Czechoslovakia’s fate: The Nazis
conquered the country the following spring.Langfan, who has spent decades studying Israel’s security situation,
warns that Obama, aided by England France and the European Union, is
pressuring Israel to weaken itself by ceding territory to a terrorist
Palestinian Authority that remains virulently anti-Semitic and depicts
Israelis in terms reminiscent of Nazi propagandist Josef Goebbels.

"We must do much for the good of the poorest, the weak, and those who are suffering, to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace," he said.Francis told the religious leaders to fight "a one-dimensional vision of a human person, according to which man is reduced to what he produces and what he consumes," which he said was "one of the most dangerous snares of our times".While he said history had shown that any attempt to eliminate God had produced "much violence," he reached out to those who seek truth, goodness and beauty without belonging to any religion."They are our precious allies in the commitment to defend human dignity, build a more peaceful coexistence among people and protect nature with care," he said.
Francis' description of people who belong to no religion as "precious allies" in the search for truth was a marked contrast to the attitude of former Pope Benedict, who sometimes left non-Catholics feeling that he saw them as second-class believers.Since his election a week ago, Francis has set the tone for a new, humbler papacy, calling on the Church to defend the weak and protect the environment. In another sign of his simpler style, Francis addressed the religious leaders while seated in a beige armchair and not the usual elaborate throne used in the ornate hall for audiences.
CATHOLIC-JEWISH COMMITMENT
"I feel a great deal of excitement and optimism and hope," said Jerusalem-based Rabbi David Rosen, International Director of Inter-religious Affairs for the American Jewish Committee."He is deeply committed to the Catholic-Jewish relationship," Rosen, who attended the meeting, told Reuters.Yahya Pallavicini, a leader of Italy's Muslim community, said he was impressed by the pope's insistence of inter-religious friendship."Friendship is a core way to increase brotherhood between believers and also to increase the deepness of the dignity of humanity," he said after the meeting."We can't consider man only as a consumer or as someone who has to be considered only in terms of the market but as a believer and as a person who has the holiness in his heart."Before his address, the pope had a private meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew from Istanbul, who attended Francis's inaugural Mass on Tuesday. It was the first time the spiritual head of Orthodox Christians had attended a Roman pope's inaugural Mass since the Great Schism between western and eastern Christianity in 1054.At Wednesday's meeting, Francis called Bartholomew "my brother Andrew," a reference to the apostle who was the brother of St Peter and was the first bishop of the Church of Byzantium.Francis also held a private session with Metropolitan Hilarion, the foreign minister of the Russian Orthodox Church, the largest in the Orthodox world. Also at Wednesday's meeting was Abe Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League in the United States.Foxman is a Jew born in Poland in 1940 and saved from the Holocaust by his Polish Catholic nanny, who raised him as a Catholic during the war and then returned him to his family. His parents survived the war but 14 family members were killed."I asked him to bless the memory of the Catholic nanny who saved my life and he said he would," Foxman told Reuters.Archbishop of York John Sentamu led a delegation from the Anglican Communion.
Other guests included World Council of Churches General Secretary Rev Olav Fykse Tveit and Jordan's Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, head of an Islamic group that launched a dialogue with the Vatican after Pope Benedict angered Muslims in 2006 with a speech that implied their faith was violent and irrational.

Every time I a new pope is elected, the Amen corner goes into full swing as if every Pope is automatically the perfect choice. I can understand that. Catholics are naturally excited to have a new leader with a bright future, and few are willing to criticize a new religious leader despite knowing nothing about him. I am not going to criticize the new Pope, but I do have concerns about the possible direction of the Catholic Church with Pope Francis at the helm, and the future of the Church’s relationship to Israel. Both Israel’s Prime Minister and President praised the new Pope. President Peres said "The newly elected Pope represents devotion, the love of God, the love of peace, a holy modesty and a new continent which is now awakening. We need, more than ever, a spiritual leadership and not just a political one. Where political leaders may divide, spiritual leaders may unite. Unite around a vision, unite around values, unite around a faith that we can make the world a better place to live. May the Lord Bless the new Pope."The Chief Rabbinate of Israel said “Over the past twelve years there has been a rich and fruitful dialogue between the Holy See and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel on primary issues such as banning terrorism in God's Name, the sanctity of life, the sanctity of the family unit, etc.”That of course is what we should expect from diplomats and religious leaders, but the language of hope for a brighter future left out concerns about the new Pope. Debbie Schlussel pointed out that the sharply increased number of lapsed Catholics in Argentina under his leadership shows that he was not successful as a Cardinal.Boycott Watch has other concerns. While the Jesuit community celebrated one of their own becoming pope, I can’t help but remember that Georgetown University, a Jesuit school, hosted a divest-from-Israel hate festival which I attended - undercover. As I detail in my book Boycotting Peace, the Muslim program presenters told the Jesuit campus students to lie to their own clergy to bring Israel hate programs into churches, and even incited violence against Jews in Israel. This all happened while a Georgetown University ‘observer’ sat silently and watched without objection. Perhaps this is best explained by the fact that Georgetown received millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia, not only to host the conference, but also to provide a pro-Arab/anti-Israel Middle-East studies chair.

Jewish Quarter Resident: Obama Put Us 'Under Siege'
The visit to Jerusalem of President Barack H. Obama will impact perhaps most negatively on residents of the Jewish Quarter.
Obama-Reuters
Because of the proximity of the Old City to the King David Hotel,
and many of the sites the President will visit – and especially due to
the security threat by Arabs in the area – the residents of the Jewish
Quarter will have to walk if they want to go anywhere. And food – at
least bread and milk, which is delivered daily – is going to be hard to
find. “All the stores in the neighborhood were told that there would be
no more deliveries for the rest of the week. Today, Tuesday, was
essentially our last shopping day before Passover,” said S.
As a result, many families in the area are
likely to have a hard time preparing for the holiday. “People need to
organize, to change their pots and pans and undertake other tasks, but as we are under a virtual siege, it is impossible,” S. said. And it isn't just Obama, said S. “We are
tired of the 'edicts' imposed on us nearly every week,” she said. “Now
it's Obama, next week it will be another music festival, after that a
food festival, and so on. During these events access to the Jewish
quarter by vehicles is almost impossible. Not to mention that there is
no parking. The city is concerned with getting more tourists here, but
they forgot that people actually live here,” she said.Op-Ed: Obama, the Conniving Kid from Down the Block
Published: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 9:20 AM
The kid from Philly meets the kids from down the block this week.

The writer is a retired NYS Trooper; presently working with therapy dogs
Remember when
the kid from down the block was hailed as a hero for saving the little
boy he had pushed into the pool himself just seconds earlier, after he
looked around to make sure nobody was watching him?
Remember
when the same kid scored 100 on the math exam the rest of the class
failed and how he was promoted to the Honors program the following
marking period, even though he was heard bragging about how he stole a
copy of the math test the night before the exam? Remember that
kid? I’m sure you didn’t forget when he rode his shiny new bicycle to
your house to show it off to your parents and your siblings,
the day after you were punished for leaving your bike in the driveway
where your Dad ran over it with the car and destroyed it. That’s right,
you remember, that kid; there was one like him on every block.Fast
forward to 2013, what if that type of kid was beginning his second term
as the American President, and what if he was going to visit Israel? While
the American President refused to sell the Democratic Israel F-16
fighter jets, he cut a deal with the sharia-law based Muslim
brotherhood, whose sole purpose is to exterminate the Jews, giving them
200 Abrams battle tanks and a squadron of F-16 Falcon fighter jets; very
conniving.Back on the home front, he made large
promises to elderly American Jews regarding their beloved healthcare.
“If you like your plan, you can keep it,” he said. “If you like your
Dr., you can keep your Dr.,” he proclaimed. However, he neglected to
tell America’s elderly Jews who adore him that they may not be able to
afford to keep their plan or their Dr.; again, a real conniver. The
conniving kid from down the block yearns to be a hero; but he will
always take what he believes is the easy way out. It’s easier to anger
your friends (Israel) than to face the wrath of your country's enemies
(Muslim Brotherhood). It’s easier to blame a terrorist attack on a video
and imprison the videographer than to confront the actual terrorists
who perpetrated the attack (Benghazi). It’s easier to blame a legal
handgun and all NRA members for a crime committed by a mentally ill
person than to confront the policies which allowed such a crime to
occur. The problem with the conniving kid from down
the block is that he has never been challenged. He has never been
frightened; he has never feared for his life, nor has he had the lives
of others part of his responsibility in the trenches. Life has been too
easy, and America is suffering; Israel should not have to suffer his
inadequacies.Remember, Israel, the conniving kid
from down the block is no match for your kid; the kid from Philly. The
kid from Philly is no political novice, but he has a long resume
of bravery and heroism. He is the first Prime Minister to serve a third
term since David Ben-Gurion, so the American President has nothing to
brag about being in his second term—Netanyahu is in his third. The
kid from Philly has been in the trenches, he has been wounded, he has
saved lives, he has lost those dear to him; he is a warrior and a
scholar. He will not let Israel down. Amidst the misguided screeching of
the voices from the Left, both American and Israeli, the kid from
Philly will not allow the American President to destroy all that he and
his fellow warriors have worked for all their lives. The
American President is coming to Israel; Prime Minister Netanyahu will
receive him and politely listen to his naiveté; his opinions on Iran,
Syria, Egypt, the Settlements, blah, blah, blah. Israel is alone. A
majority of American Jews bow to this American President. Israel has its
own problems with its left-wing Jews and who they choose to bow to as
well. What will become of us, as Jews? Have we broached a point of no return? Is our extinction once again very easy to imagine? The answers might be buried in the way in which the kid from Philly schmoozes with the kid from down the block. Obama: Little Daylight between Us on Iran
U.S. President, Prime Minister, hold an upbeat news conference. Obama, Netanyahu: Israel has the right to defend itself.
PM Netanyahu & President Obama-Flash 90

Shalom.
President Peres, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and most of all, to the
people of Israel, thank you for this incredibly warm welcome. This is my
third visit to Israel so let me just say tov lihiyot shuv ba’aretz.
I’m so honored to be here as you prepare to celebrate the 65th anniversary of a free and independent State of Israel. Yet I know that in stepping foot on this land, I walk with you on the historic homeland of the Jewish people.More than 3,000 years ago, the Jewish people lived here, tended the land here, prayed to God here. And after centuries of exile and persecution, unparalleled in the history of man, the founding of the Jewish State of Israel was a rebirth, a redemption unlike any in history.Today, the sons of Abraham and the daughters of Sarah are fulfilling the dream of the ages — to be “masters of their own fate” in “their own sovereign state.” And just as we have for these past 65 years, the United States is proud to stand with you as your strongest ally and your greatest friend. As I begin my second term as President, Israel is the first stop on my first foreign trip. This is no accident. Across this region the winds of change bring both promise and peril. So I see this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our nations, to restate America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbors.I want to begin right now, by answering a question that is sometimes asked about our relationship — why? Why does the United States stand so strongly, so firmly with the State of Israel? And the answer is simple. We stand together because we share a common story — patriots determined “to be a free people in our land,” pioneers who forged a nation, heroes who sacrificed to preserve our freedom, and immigrants from every corner of the world who renew constantly our diverse societies. We stand together because we are democracies. For as noisy and messy as it may be, we know that democracy is the greatest form of government ever devised by man.We stand together because it makes us more prosperous. Our trade and investment create jobs for both our peoples. Our partnerships in science and medicine and health bring us closer to new cures, harness new energy and have helped transform us into high-tech hubs of our global economy. We stand together because we share a commitment to helping our fellow human beings around the world. When the earth shakes and the floods come, our doctors and rescuers reach out to help. When people are suffering, from Africa to Asia, we partner to fight disease and overcome hunger. And we stand together because peace must come to the Holy Land. For even as we are clear-eyed about the difficulty, we will never lose sight of the vision of an Israel at peace with its neighbors. So as I begin this visit, let me say as clearly as I can –the United States of America stands with the State of Israel because it is in our fundamental national security interest to stand with Israel. It makes us both stronger. It makes us both more prosperous. And it makes the world a better place. That’s why the United States was the very first nation to recognize the State of Israel 65 years ago. That’s why the Star of David and the Stars and Stripes fly together today. And that is why I’m confident in declaring that our alliance is eternal, it is forever – lanetzach.
Thank you very much.

Pope urges religions, those with no church to ally for justice
By Philip Pullella | Reuters – 4 hrs ago MAR 20,13
By Philip Pullella
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis
urged members of all religions and those belonging to no church on
Wednesday to unite to defend justice, peace and the environment and not
allow the value of a person to be reduced to "what he produces and what
he consumes".Francis, elected a week ago as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, met leaders of non-Catholic Christian religions such as Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists, and others including Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus."The Catholic
Church is aware of the importance of furthering respect of friendship
between men and women of different religious traditions," the Argentine
pontiff told the religious leaders in an audience at the Vatican.
Speaking in Italian in the frescoed Sala Clementina, he
said members of all religions and even non-believers had to recognize
their joint responsibility "to our world, to all of creation, which we
have to love and protect."We must do much for the good of the poorest, the weak, and those who are suffering, to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace," he said.Francis told the religious leaders to fight "a one-dimensional vision of a human person, according to which man is reduced to what he produces and what he consumes," which he said was "one of the most dangerous snares of our times".While he said history had shown that any attempt to eliminate God had produced "much violence," he reached out to those who seek truth, goodness and beauty without belonging to any religion."They are our precious allies in the commitment to defend human dignity, build a more peaceful coexistence among people and protect nature with care," he said.

Op-Ed: The Jesuit Pope and Israel
Published: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 12:44 AM
Jesuit split over Israel may result in a Vatican showdown.
Fred Taub, Boycott Watch
The writer is President of Boycott Watch, a business consultant specializing in boycotts, as well as the author of Boycotting Peace (http://www.BoycottingPeace.com) which exposes the secrets behind the Arab boycott of Israel and its subsidiary BDS campaign.Every time I a new pope is elected, the Amen corner goes into full swing as if every Pope is automatically the perfect choice.
I
host a radio show on the campus station of John Carroll University,
also a Jesuit school. I recently had concerns when a student showed me
the Carroll News' last edition in December 2012 with an article titled “The Truth about Palestine.” Of course
there has never been a nation by the name of Palestine, but there is a
campaign to make people think there was such an Arab state, despite the
fact the name is not Arabic nor is there even a letter ‘P’ sound in
Arabic. A Carroll News spokesperson said the article was proper
because ‘my professor said the media is biased and Israel only gets
good reports’ - a contention which is blatantly false. After
considerable pressure from a Jewish John Carroll student, the Caroll News posted a counter story with the unevenly balanced title ‘A conversation with…”The
fact is, however, that while a Cardinal in Argentina, Pope Francis
stood with the Jewish community against terrorism. He is reported to
have had close relations with the unabashedly pro-Israel Jewish
community there. This makes me think Pope Francis is pro-Israel. More
so, there are reports that for this very reason, the Jesuit
leadership was unhappy with Pope Francis when he was a Cardinal, setting
up a clash among the Jesuits who take an oath of loyalty directly to
the pope and not to Bishops or Cardinals. We
do not have a clear idea whether the Jesuits will follow Pope Francis,
or if the pope will look the other way at the Arab
boycott-of-Israel-stance of his fellow Jesuits at places like Georgetown
University. Will Pope Francis demand a stop to such activity, or will
he just be silent? And if Pope Francis issues a pro-Israel directive,
will the Jesuits follow it? I expect to see conflict within the church
for months to come.Addressing relations
with the Vatican, Israel’s President Peres said, "The relations between
the Vatican and the Jewish people are now at their best in the last 2000
years and I hope they will grow in content and depths." I too “hope
they will grow” as President Peres said, Still, I can’t help but notice
President Peres did not just say “will grow.”Israel’s
relationship to the Vatican is not in the hands of Pope Francis or
anyone in Israel - it is in the hands of the Jesuit communities which
may undermine their own pope.

In Israel, Obama warns Syria on chemical weapons
By Matt Spetalnick and Jeffrey Heller | Reuters – 53 mins ago MAR 20,13
By Matt Spetalnick and Jeffrey Heller
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama pledged on Wednesday to hold Syria to account if it used chemical weapons and reassured Israel of U.S. resolve against Iran as he tried to allay the security fears of the main U.S. ally in the Middle East.Obama,
visiting Israel for the first time as president and seeking to bolster
his image among Israelis, said he had asked for an investigation to
determine if chemical weapons had been unleashed in Syria as has been
alleged.Standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
with whom he has had rocky relations, Obama expressed skepticism that
Syrian rebels had launched chemical weapons and said there would be
retaliation if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used them."We have been clear that the use of chemical weapons
against the Syrian people would be a serious and tragic mistake," Obama
said at a news conference in Jerusalem with Netanyahu."The Assad regime must understand that they will be
held accountable for the use of chemical weapons or their transfer to
terrorists," he said.Obama also expressed a desire for a resumption of
Israeli-Palestinian talks but brought no new proposals and made no
mention of Israeli settlement-building, a main factor behind the
collapse of the U.S.-sponsored negotiations in 2010.He said he wanted to hear from each side before
determining a way forward. He meets Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
in Ramallah on Thursday.Much of Obama's three-day visit to Israel is aimed at
resetting relations with a valued ally that became offended during
Obama's first term when he pressured Netanyahu to halt settlement
construction and did not visit the Jewish state.Displaying a markedly warmer approach toward Obama,
Netanyahu said he was "absolutely convinced that the president is
determined to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons".However, the right-wing leader said he was certain
Obama appreciated that Israel "can never cede the right to defend
ourselves to others, even to the greatest of our friends", a hint at a
possible go-it-alone plan to attack Iran's nuclear program."Today we have both the right and the capability to defend ourselves," said Netanyahu.Obama, whose administration has in the past privately
sought to head off a unilateral military strike against Iran, said
Netanyahu was "absolutely correct" that each country has the right to
defend itself. The president said there was "not a lot of daylight"
between U.S. and Israeli assessments of where Iran is on its nuclear
development. But he was quick to note "there is time to resolve this
diplomatically"."The question is, will the Iranian leadership seize that opportunity," Obama added.

Renewed nuke sale fear after recent NKorea test
By | Associated Press – 19 hrs ago MAR 20,13
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea's nuclear test
last month wasn't just a show of defiance and national pride; it also
is advertising. The target audience, analysts say, is anyone in the
world looking to buy nuclear material.Though Pyongyang has threatened to launch nuclear strikes on the U.S., the most immediate threat posed by its nuclear technology
may be North Korea's willingness to sell it to nations that Washington
sees as sponsors of terrorism. The fear of such sales was highlighted
this week, when Japan confirmed that cargo seized last year and believed
to be from North Korea contained material that could be used to make
nuclear centrifuges, which are crucial to enriching uranium into bomb
fuel. The dangerous message North Korea is sending, according to Graham
Allison, a nuclear expert at the Harvard Kennedy School: "Nukes are for
sale."North Korea launched a long-range rocket in December, which the U.N.
called a cover for a banned test of ballistic missile technology. On
Feb. 12, it conducted its third underground nuclear test, which got Pyongyang new U.N. sanctions.Outside nuclear specialists believe North Korea has enough nuclear
material for several crude bombs, but they have yet to see proof that
Pyongyang can build a warhead small enough to mount on a missile. The
North, however, may be able to help other countries develop nuclear
expertise right now, as it is believed to have done in the past."There's a growing technical capability and confidence to sell
weapons and technology abroad, without fear of reprisal, and that lack
of fear comes from (their) growing nuclear capabilities," Joel Wit, a
former U.S. State Department official, said at a recent nuclear
conference in Seoul.Pyongyang says it needs nuclear weapons
because of what it calls a hostile U.S. policy aimed at invading the
North. An unidentified spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry
warned Wednesday of military strikes if the United States repeats recent
test flights in South Korea of the nuclear-capable B-52 bomber. The U.S., South Korea and others say North Korean brinksmanship meant
to win aid and other concessions is the real motive. Even China, North
Korea's most important ally, opposes its neighbor's nuclear ambitions.North Korean nuclear sales earn the impoverished country money that
can be pumped back into weapons development, analyst Shin Beomchul at
the South Korean-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul said Tuesday. Its growing capabilities could make North Korea more attractive to buyers, especially if it is determined that highly enriched uranium was used in last month's test.Proliferation worries have ramped up since late 2010, when North
Korea unveiled a long-suspected uranium enrichment operation. North
Korea's first two nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, were suspected to be
fueled by its limited plutonium stockpile. A crude uranium bomb is
easier to produce than one made with plutonium, and uranium production
is easier to conceal.Little is known about North Korea's uranium
program, but Washington and others are keenly interested in whether it
is producing highly enriched uranium for bombs and whether uranium was
used in the third test — two things suspected, but not yet confirmed, by
outsiders.
A nuclear test using highly enriched uranium "would announce to the world — including potential buyers — that North Korea is now operating a new, undiscovered production line for weapons-usable material," Allison, the Harvard nuclear specialist, wrote in a New York Times op-ed after the North's test.U.S. officials have hinted that retaliation would follow should Washington discover North Korean cooperation behind any atomic attack on an American city or U.S. ally.Pyongyang's nuclear transfers and any use of weapons of mass destruction "would be considered a grave threat to the United States and our allies, and we will hold North Korea fully accountable for the consequences," President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said last week.U.S. officials have long tracked North Korean dealings in nuclear and weapons technology. Sanctions have cut down on missile sales, but Iran and Syria, two countries seen by Washington as rogue actors, may continue to be customers. In November, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization proposed observing North Korea's nuclear test, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported, citing an unidentified Western diplomatic source privy to Pyongyang-Tehran ties.North Korea is believed to have helped Syria build what senior U.S. intelligence officials called a secret nuclear reactor meant to produce plutonium. In 2007, Israeli jets bombed the structure in a remote Syrian desert.Japan's government said Monday that it has determined that a shipment believed to have originated in North Korea violated U.N. sanctions because it contained material that could be used to make nuclear centrifuges. The shipment of an aluminum alloy was seized from a Singaporean-flagged ship transiting Tokyo last August. The ship was reportedly bound for Myanmar from the Chinese port of Dalian, although Japanese government officials didn't confirm Myanmar as the destination.Japan's chief government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, said officials searched the ship because they believed it carried North Korean cargo. News reports said the United States tipped off Japan. Suga said officials had determined in subsequent analyses that the rods were made of an alloy that suggests they were intended for use in a nuclear centrifuge.Suga said the seizure was the first to be conducted under a law Japan passed in 2010 to clamp down on the movement of materials that could be used for nuclear weapons development being brought into, or exported from, North Korea.
The murkiness of the clandestine nuclear trade is a major worry. It's difficult to know how a buyer would use atomic material or know-how, or where material could end up after being sold."The terrorist threat of an improvised nuclear device delivered anonymously and unconventionally by a boat or a truck across our long and unprotected borders is one against which we have no certain deterrent or defensive response," Robert Gallucci, a former senior U.S. diplomat who negotiated a U.S.-North Korea nuclear deal used to defuse a nuclear crisis in the 1990s, said late last month in Seoul."For Americans, this threat is far greater than the unlikely threat that may someday be posed by North Korean nuclear weapons delivered by a ballistic missile," he said.___Associated Press writers Eric Talmadge in Tokyo and Hyung-jin Kim in Seoul contributed to this report. METEORS HIT THE EARTH
REVELATION 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
REVELATION 8:12-13
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
An asteroid estimated to be have been about 55 feet in diameter exploded on February 15 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, generating shock waves that shattered windows and damaged buildings. More than 1,500 people were injured.Later that day, a larger, unrelated asteroid discovered last year passed about 17,200 miles from Earth, closer than the network of television and weather satellites that ring the planet.
The events "serve as evidence that we live in an active solar system with potentially hazardous objects passing through our neighborhood with surprising frequency," said Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat."We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence rather than a catastrophe," said Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, who called the hearing to learn what is being done and how much money is needed to better protect the planet.NASA has found and is tracking about 95 percent of the largest objects flying near Earth, those that are .62 miles or larger in diameter."An asteroid of that size, a kilometer or bigger, could plausibly end civilization," White House science advisor John Holdren told legislators at the same hearing. But only about 10 percent of an estimated 10,000 potential "city-killer" asteroids, those with a diameter of about 165 feet have been found, Holdren added. On average, objects of that size are estimated to hit Earth about once every 1,000 years.
"From the information we have, we don't know of an asteroid that will threaten the population of the United States," Bolden said. "But if it's coming in three weeks, pray."In addition to stepping up its monitoring efforts and building international partnerships, NASA is looking at developing technologies to divert an object that may be on a collision course with Earth."The odds of a near-Earth object strike causing massive casualties and destruction of infrastructure are very small, but the potential consequences of such an event are so large it makes sense to takes the risk seriously," Holdren said.About 66 million years ago, an object 6 miles in diameter is believed to have smashed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, leading to the demise of the dinosaurs, as well as most plant and animal life on Earth. The asteroid that exploded over Russia last month was the largest object to hit Earth's atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event when an asteroid or comet exploded over Siberia, leveling 80 million trees over more than 830 square miles (2,150 sq km).(Editing by Kevin Gray and Paul Simao)
