Car bomb kills 53 near Damascus ruling party building

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A car bomb killed 53 people and wounded 200 in central Damascus on Thursday when it blew up on a busy highway close to ruling Baath Party offices and the Russian Embassy, Syrian television said.TV footage showed charred and bloodied bodies strewn
across the street after the blast, which state media said was the result
of a suicide bombing by "terrorists" battling President Bashar
al-Assad.

has been relatively insulated from almost two years of unrest and civil
war in which around 70,000 people have been killed across the country,
but the bloodshed has shattered suburbs around the capital.Rebels who control districts to the south and east of
Damascus have attacked Assad's power base for nearly a month and struck
with devastating bombs over the last year.The al Qaeda-linked rebel group Jabhat al-Nusra, which
claimed responsibility for several of those bombs, says it carried out
17 attacks around Damascus in the first half of February, including at
least seven bombings.Activists said most of the victims of Thursday's attack
in the city's Mazraa district were civilians, including children,
possibly from a school behind the Baath building.Opposition activists reported further explosions
elsewhere in the city after the explosion which struck shortly before 11
a.m. (0900 GMT).One resident in the heart of the capital heard three or

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence via a network of sources inside Syria, said the Mazraa car bomb detonated at a checkpoint close to the Baath Party building, located about 200 meters (660 feet) from the Russian embassy.Russia's Itar-Tass news agency quoted a diplomat as saying the blast blew out windows at the embassy but no employees were wounded. "The building has really been damaged ... clashed with Israeli security forces Thursday, hurling rocks and
burning tires at a West Bank demonstration to show solidarity with Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.Palestinians
have staged protests across the West Bank all week in solidarity with
the 4,500 prisoners held by Israel. Four of the prisoners are staging a hunger strike and the worsening condition of one, Samer Issawi, sparked the latest round of unrest between the protesters and Israeli troops.
His hunger strike has drawn international attention and concerns from notables such as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.Issawi is incarcerated for violating the terms of his release from a
previous prison term. On Thursday, an Israeli court sentenced him for
eight months from the day of his arrest on July 7, meaning he could be
freed as early as next month.But Palestinians officials said it wasn't a done deal because Issawi
also faces separate charges in a military court and there were no
indications that he planned to end his hunger strike.Some 2,000 people gathered at the
Beitunia military checkpoint, hoping to march to a nearby military
prison, where some of the prisoners are held. When the military
prevented them from proceeding, protesters began rioting by hurling
stones and burning tires. The demonstrators, some masked and others
draped in the green flags associated with the militant group Hamas,
attempted to block a road using large stones, garbage bins and tires set
ablaze. Israeli soldiers responded with rubber-coated bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd and a bulldozer cleared debris from the road.Palestinian Red Crescent official Mohammad Samhan said 27 people were injured in the clashes. deteriorated after an on-again, off-again hunger strike stretching more
than 200 days.Issawi was hospitalized over the weekend after he lost consciousness,
but his lawyers said his condition improved after receiving vitamins
and minerals intravenously.Last year, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners went on a mass hunger
strike to demand better conditions in jail. In a deal mediated by
Egyptian officials, they were promised more family visits and limits on
administrative detention.Issawi was among those freed in a 2011 exchange that released
hundreds of Palestinians, many of them militants involved in deadly
attacks, in exchange for an Israeli soldier held by Hamas-backed

Here we have another “silent” story about Islamic violence in our country with nary a word from the mainstream media about it. The country goes gaga over a beautiful model’s murder
at the hands of an international legless sports hero, but the beheading
of two Egyptian Coptic Christian men in New Jersey by a Muslim gets a pass. Why? Simple. The gruesome beheading invokes the Muslim ritual,
called for in the Koran. Koranic verse 8:12 reads: “I will instill
terror into the hearts of unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and
smite all their fingers off.”Our media shuts its eyes, turns its head and stuffs its ears when anything negative about the primitive actions of Muslim occur.Maj. Nidal Hasan, who brutally slaughtered 13 of his fellow troops at
Fort Hood, Texas, and wounded 22 others, was said to have shouted,
“Allahu Akhbar” during his shooting spree. He was just following
Koranic orders to kill infidels. By the way, “Allahu Akhbar” is Arabic
for “God is great.” The Pentagon’s “thorough” investigation into Hasan’s
murderous assault never mentioned Islam, the Koran or the major’s
religion in its final report. It was considered a workplace act of violence.We are giving Islamic radicals a free pass to ritually murder those
considered infidels, or non-believers in “the religion of peace,” and
