An Israeli Arab group, “The Al-Aqsa Heritage Institute,” on Thursday
issued a statement demanding that Israel halt its plans to bring more
Jews to the Kotel (Western Wall) – which, the group claims, is holy not to Jews, but to Muslims.In fact, the group says, Israel is “defiling the holiness of the site” by conducting Jewish prayers there.In Jewish tradition,
the Kotel is the outer retaining wall of the Holy Temple, which stood
on the Temple Mount, approximately at the same location as the Al-Aqsa
Mosque. When the Holy
Temple was destroyed nearly 2,000 years ago, Jews were prohibited from
worshipping on the Mount, first by the Romans and then by the Muslims,
and proscribed from doing so by Jewish law – and adopted the Kotel as a
place of prayer, as it was the closest place to the Holy Temple as the
could get.In Islamic legend, however, the Kotel is a Muslim site – famous as the wall
that Muhammad used to tie up his donkey when he ascended to heaven on
his “night journey” from the Temple Mount. The “Buraq Wall,” as Islamist
groups call the Kotel, is a part of the Temple Mount, and thus has the
same status for Muslims as the Al-Aqsa Mosque, or the other holy places
in the area.In a statement this week, the group said
that “the Buraq Wall, west of the Al Aqsa Mosque, is one of the main
objectives of the Israeli occupation. As a result, more than 10 million
Israelis and tourists violated the holiness of the site during 2012,
this according to the occupying police force. The occupiers are proud of

of visitors within a few years,” the statement said.“Such plans endanger

Italy's Mount Etna sent lava and gas shooting toward the stars early yesterday morning, the first big eruption for the volcano in 2013.The
famous Sicilian volcano burst to life overnight, sending a fountain of
fire into the air. The dramatic scene was captured in a video by Klaus Dorschfeldt, a videographer and webmaster at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.Mount
Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, had emitted signs of an
imminent paroxysm in recent weeks. On Jan. 22, lava and strong flashes
in the volcano's New Southeast Crater were clearly visible from the Sicilian foothills; these often herald a new paroxysm: short, violent eruptive bursts.Dorschfeldt
said he knew Mount Etna's recent signals could precede new activity.
"[I've] followed the activity of Etna for many years, and with time you
learn to know it as if it were your friend," he said in an email

of birds have descended on a small Kentucky town this winter, fouling
the landscape, scaring pets and raising the risk for disease in a
real-life version of Alfred Hitchcock's horror film, The Birds.
The blackbirds and European starlings blacken the sky of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, before roosting at dusk. Locals claim they are turning the landscape white with bird poop and the disease they carry can kill a dog and sicken humans."I have seen them come in, and there are enough that if the sun is just right, they'll cloud your vision of the sun," said Hopkinsville-Christian County historian William Turner. "I estimate there are millions of them."David Chiles, president of the Little River Audubon Society, said the fact that migratory flocks are roosting in the city rather than flying further south is tied to climate warming."The weather, the climate plays a big role," said Mr Chiles, the bird enthusiast who also teaches biology at Hopkinsville High School."They somehow establish a roost south of where the ground is frozen solid," he explained. "They are ground feeders, feeding on leftover crops and insects. If the fields are frozen solid, they can't feed."
Although the birds have not turned on humans as in the classic 1963 Hitchcock movie featuring vicious attacks on people in a small northern California town, the town has taken defensive measures.The south-central Kentucky city of 35,000 people, about an hour north of Nashville, has hired a pest control company to get rid of the interlopers.Henry Jako, general manager of McGee Pest Control, said crews use air cannons and "bird-bangers" - similar to rocket fireworks aimed into the trees where the birds roost.The artillery attacks are disturbing some locals as well as the birds."It scares my little dog to death," said Christian County Judge-Executive Steve Tribble. "I don't know what it does other than move the birds from one tree to the next."Mr Jako said that in the worst-affected neighbourhoods, multiple cannons and consecutive blasts are being used to keep the birds moving.When they fly away, the birds leave behind a huge volume of excrement.Reuters

insists she will not steer the minority Liberal government left just to
appease NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.Forced to deal only with Horwath because Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak refuses to play ball with the Liberals, Wynne said she would remain on a centrist course.“The budget deliberations are going to be balanced,” the premier said Wednesday.“My priorities are job
creation and the economy, a fairer society, and finding common ground,”
she said, one day after a throne speech that borrowed heavily from the Tory and NDP policy platforms in hopes of keeping the Liberals afloat.“Even if . . . the
Conservatives don’t want to work with us, the reality is there are
people across the province . . . concerned about fiscal responsibility,
they’re concerned about economic growth and job creation.”
Noting Finance
Minister Charles Sousa has begun the budget-making process, Wynne said
crafting the spending plan is at early stage.As for Horwath’s
insistence all NDP pre-budget ideas must be included for the third
party’s support, the premier said: “here’s what I know about problem
solving . . . other people bring positions to the table and those are
the starting point.”Hudak has said that with $11.9-billion deficit there is a need for deep spending cuts and restraint.The Tories would like an election sooner rather than later.
