Survivor says principal, others saved her in U.S. school rampage
Reuters – 14 mins ago DEC 23,12
NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - A survivor of the elementary school massacre in Connecticut
that killed 26 people said on Sunday the principal and two staff
members had saved her and others' lives by warning that a gunman was in
the building.Becky Virgalla, a reading consultant at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, said she was in a meeting with Principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and other colleagues when the shooter broke into the building on December 14.Hochsprung, Sherlach and lead teacher Natalie Hammond "went out in the hall to check out the noise that we didn't know that was gunshots at first," Virgalla told Reuters Television at a memorial where the names of the victims were written on wooden angels."The three of them were shot and they yelled back
'shooter, stay put.' And they saved my life and the life of four others
who were at that meeting," she said. The gunman, Adam Lanza, 20, shot dead 26 people at the school, including 20 young children, in the second-worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Before attacking
the school with a military-style assault rifle, Lanza shot and killed
his mother at their home. He killed himself after the assault at the
school.Hochsprung, 47, and
Sherlach, 56, were killed, and Hammond was wounded. Investigators have
not disclosed a motive for Lanza's attack.Virgalla had some advice for parents and teachers: make sure your doors lock from the inside."Ours did not and teachers had to go out. You can't be
out in a hall when a shooter is present in your school. Just that simple
thing could make a difference in time and safety of the children," she
said.The attack has
galvanized the gun control debate in the United States, where the
Constitution protects possession of firearms. President Barack Obama is
expected to propose steps next month to tighten gun laws. The head of the
U.S. gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, defended his call for
armed guards in all schools despite withering criticism of the group's
response to the Newtown massacre.(Reporting by Ian Simpson; editing by Christopher Wilson)

Putin visits India, eyes arms sales, trade and political ties
By Alexei Anishchuk | Reuters – 3 hrs ago DEC 23,12
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Arms sales will be on the agenda when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India on Monday to court a country that has traditionally been a top client.Putin's trip, his first to India since he started a new Kremlin six-year term in May, is a chance to reaffirm Russia's interest in India, long a regional ally and now a partner in the BRICS group of emerging market nations. In an article for publication in the Indian newspaper
The Hindu on Monday, Putin stressed that "deepening friendship and
cooperation with India is among the top priorities of our foreign
policy"."India and Russia show an example of responsible
leadership and collective actions in the international arena," he wrote,
a veiled swipe at the West and in particular the United States, whom
Putin accuses of seeking to impose its will on the world.Russian defense industry sources said the visit could
produce deals on the sale of fighter jets and aircraft engines worth
more than $7.5 billion. One said that could include the sale of 42
Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters and a deal on the long-term supply of 970
warplane engines.The Kremlin
said it expected the signing of "a number of large contracts in the
area of military-technical cooperation", a term referring to weapons
sales, licensing and servicing. However, warm ties dating back to the Soviet era have
been complicated by recent Russian efforts to improve relations with
Pakistan, one of Moscow's proxy enemies during the Soviet Union's war of
occupation in Afghanistan in the 1980s.Relations between the world's second biggest arms
exporter Russia and India, its largest buyer last year, have also run
into sporadic problems including delays in the delivery of a
reconditioned Soviet-built aircraft carrier, now expected late in 2013.
MILITARY MIGHT
MILITARY MIGHT
India plans to spend about $100 billion over the next
10 years to upgrade its largely Soviet-era military equipment, as Asia's
third largest economy looks to match its economic might with military
power and warily eyes assertive Asian rival China.Moscow has warm political ties with China, another ally
in opposing U.S. clout and a key consumer of the oil and gas that
drives Russia's economy, but is thought to also be wary of a
faster-growing neighbor with nearly 10 times its population.India relies on Russia for 60 percent of its arms purchases, but has diversified its suppliers in recent years.Putin announced record arms sales
this year but wants to minimize the effect of the loss of deals with
Libya and of uncertainty about the future of longtime client Syria on
Russia's defense industry, an important source of political support for
him.Putin, whose country took up the presidency of the G20
this month, also hopes for strong growth in overall trade with India. In his article, he
said the volume of bilateral trade with India was expected to reach a
record $10 billion this year, after declining due to the global
financial crisis, and set a target of doubling that to $20 billion by
2015.For Putin, who will
meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Pranab Mukherjee and
senior lawmakers, India is the most distant destination since rumors of a
back problem emerged after he was seen limping in September. He had originally
been expected to travel to India last month but the Kremlin has
dismissed suggestions he has serious health problems, and Putin implied
last week that such talk was politically motivated.(Writing by Steve Gutterman; Editing by Andrew Osborn)
Air strike kills dozens of Syrians waiting to buy bread
By Erika Solomon | Reuters – 6 hrs ago DEC 23,12
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Dozens of people were killed and many more wounded in a Syrian government air strike that hit a bakery where a crowd was queuing for bread on Sunday, activists said.If confirmed, the attack on Halfaya in central Syria, which was seized by rebels last week, would be one of the deadliest air strikes of Syria's civil war.Videos uploaded by activists showed dozens of
bloodstained corpses lying amid rubble and shrapnel. An adolescent boy
with both his feet blown off lay flailing in the middle of a road.
"When I got there, I could see piles of bodies all over the ground. There were women and children," said Samer al-Hamawi, an activist in the town. "There are also dozens of wounded people."Residents of Halfaya told Reuters they estimated 90 dead. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group with a network of activists across Syria, counted 60 killed."The number is likely to rise because there are dozens of wounded being treated in the area and nearby hospitals, among them 50 in critical condition," it said.
The uprising has grown into civil war, with death tolls regularly topping 100 people a day as the army hits back at rebels who have made a string of advances across the country, including around the capital. According to the Observatory, more than 180 Syrians, civilians and fighters, died on Sunday.A force of 200 rebel fighters seized the 135 Infantry Brigade base in the village of Hawa, a mostly Kurdish area in northern Aleppo province, rebels said on Sunday, as they showed journalists the base. After overcoming about 150 soldiers in the raid on Saturday, they seized weapons including two field guns, three anti-aircraft guns and dozens of boxes of Kalashnikov assault rifles, they said.In defiant remarks, Syrian Information Minister Umran Ahid al-Za'bi said rebels and their foreign allies should "forget" trying to topple Assad. He appeared to move away from the conciliatory tone of the Syrian vice president, who said last week that neither side could win the war and called for a national unity government."These military efforts to try to topple the government, of getting rid of the president, of occupying the capital ... Forget about this," al-Za'bi told a news conference in Damascus."I have general advice to those political powers that reject dialogue: time is getting short. Hurry and move on to working on a political solution."Brahimi, who replaced Kofi Annan after the former U.N. chief failed to get Assad and world powers to agree on a way to end the conflict, was expected to meet the president on Monday.Western powers and some Arab countries have repeatedly demanded that Assad step down.
BREAD SHORTAGE
Witness Hamawi said more than 1,000 people had been queuing at the bakery in the town of Halfaya. Shortages of fuel and flour have made bread production erratic across the country, and people often wait hours to buy loaves."We hadn't received flour in around three days so everyone was going to the bakery today, and lots of them were women and children," Hamawi said. "I still don't know yet if my relatives are among the dead."New York-based Human Rights Watch condemned army air strikes on bakeries earlier this year, arguing that in some incidents the Syrian military was not using enough precision to target rebel sites, and in other instances it may have intentionally hit civilians. In video from the attack site, women and children cried and screamed as men rushed with motorbikes and vans to carry away victims. There was no independent media access to the scene, as the government restricts press access in Syria. In one video, the cameraman could be heard sobbing as he filmed. "God is great, God is great. It was a war plane, a war plane," he cried. One man was seen stopping to pick up half a corpse lying in the street, wrapping it up in his own jacket and carrying it away. Residents were using their bare hands to dig for bodies underneath blocks of concrete."Where are the Arabs, where is the world?" shouted one man. "Look at all of these bodies!"

IDF soldiers patrolling along the border fence with Gaza fired into the air on Sunday night, to deter several Palestinian Authority Arabs who approached the fence. An IDF statement said that the
soldiers had called on the Arabs to back away and return to Gaza. When
the Arabs refused to heed the calls, the soldiers fired into the air.The IDF said that there were no known injuries
among the Arabs, who likely took off after the shooting. Palestinian
Authority-based media claimed that two Arabs suffered shock after the
soldiers fired at them.In another incident earlier on Sunday evening, two Gaza residents were caught by the IDF when they tried to infiltrate the Negev in the Kissufim area. The IDF Spokesperson's Office said the two were unarmed. They were turned over to security services for interrogation. Also on Sunday, for the first time since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense in November, Gaza-based terrorists fired a rocket at southern Israel.

Activists say more than 44,000 people have been killed in the 21 months since protests erupted against President Bashar al-Assad, inspired by the Arab Spring revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere.
Amid the latest carnage, United Nations-backed crisis mediator Lakhdar Brahimi arrived for more talks in Syria. He had to drive from neighboring Lebanon because fighting around Damascus International Airport has effectively shut it down.

By | Associated Press – 13 hrs ago DEC 23,12
NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in India's capital used tear gas and water cannons
for a second day Sunday in a high-security zone to break up protests by
thousands of people demonstrating against the gang rape and beating of a
23-year-old student on a bus.Police chased angry protesters with batons some of whom fought pitched battles with steel rods and rocks as they tried to get past steel barricades
and a wall created by hundreds of policemen to reach the president's
mansion to present their demands. "We want justice," they shouted.Television footage showed that some protesters were injured in the clashes. The protesters made bonfires and damaged cars and police vehicles.Police blamed the violence on hooligans. "A peaceful protest by people has been taken over by hooligans," Dharmendra Kumar, a senior police officer, told reporters. He urged people to go home to help police deal with the trouble makers. The demonstrations continued Sunday despite Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde
promising to consider their main demand for death penalties for all six
suspects who have been arrested by police following the Dec. 16 attack.Shinde said Saturday night that the government was taking steps to better ensure the safety of women.A group of protesters met Sonia Gandhi, the governing Congress party chief, and her son and lawmaker Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday and demanded a speedy trial of the suspects.Popular yoga guru Babar Ramdev
stood on the roof of a bus and pledged support to the protesters. "The
government must set up fast-track courts to punish the offenders in rape
attacks," he said. The attack one week ago has sparked days of protests across the
country. The victim is recovering from injuries in a New Delhi
government hospital but is still in critical condition. After battling the protesters
throughout the day on Saturday, authorities early on Sunday banned their
entry into the high-security zone, which also houses the offices of the
prime minister and defense, home and external affairs ministries.
Police evicted dozens of protesters who had spent the night there. However, as groups of protesters
