— Unknown assailants killed at least 25 people (CHRISTIANS) at a polytechnic school
in northeastern Nigeria, invading the campus dormitory and shooting
their victims or cutting their throats, authorities said Tuesday.The
attack at the Federal Polytechnic school in the town of Mubi in Adamawa
state came as police press to curb violence attributed to the Islamic
rebel militia Boko Haram, which is active across much of northern
Nigeria.Police recently rounded up many suspected members of Boko
Haram. Authorities also said they had killed Boko Haram spokesman Abu
Qaqa and seized many weapons as part of a wider crackdown in northern
Nigeria designed to wipe out the militia. Boko Haram acknowledged that
Abu Qaqa had been arrested by security forces, but denied that he had
been killed.The attack at the polytechnic
institute may have been "fueled by campus politics" linked to rival
factions after a student election, said Yushau Shuaib, spokesman for the
Nigerian Emergency Management Agency.Campus politics, like
local, state and federal politics in Nigeria, are often violent,
although massacres are not common. Mubi reportedly has a mixed Christian
and Muslim population, and the victims were of both faiths.
The assailants apparently sought specific targets, Adamawa police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim said.
"They called out their victims by name and shot or slaughtered them when they identified themselves," Ibrahim said in a phone interview. "The attackers killed 25 people in all, including 19 students of the Federal Polytechnic and three other students of the School of Health Technology."Ibrahim said two security guards and a retired soldier were among the victims.A relief official said 26 people were killed and 15 were wounded badly enough to be taken to a hospital.Boko Haram, which opposes secular education and governance, has attacked automatic teller machines, schools, churches, mosques and police stations. It has destroyed about 30 cellphone towers in northern Nigeria, crippling communication in some areas. The militia frequently assassinates Nigerian politicians and religious figures.The rebel militia is responsible for more than 690 killings this year, according to the Associated Press. The group made no statement claiming respons

A new flotilla
is making its way towards Gaza Strip
as pro-Palestinian European activists continue to protest Israel's blockade
of the Palestinian enclave.According to available information, a handful of activists sailing on the "Estelle" have arrived in Italy
and are gearing to set sale to Gaza in the next few days. The Estelle is sailing under a Swedish flag.
The activists originally set sail in June, docking in various European harbors along the way with aim of raising awareness to the initiative.
The ship is believed to be carrying equipment meant for the "Gaza Ark" project – a Canadian initiative that hopes to build a Gaza-made ship that would carry Palestinian exports outside the Strip's waters.
Among the activists – who for the most part are Swedish – is Israeli expat Dror Feiler, who also took part in the 2010 Marmara flotilla.
Israeli authorities have been following the group since it left Sweden. According to the Foreign Ministry, there is only a handful of activists on board, some of whom are known for participating in anti-Israeli activities.
"They are more isolated then ever. This 'adventure' has garnered zero interest outside this group," a ministry source told Ynet.
"Various foreign ministries have issued travel advisories warning their citizens against participating in Gaza sails."
The source added that "Hamas still
maintains its radical hardline when it comes to Israel, so the
maritime blockade in still in effect, in accordance to international
law."

to create a mutant superslug capable of wreaking crop havoc.They are also threatening to wipe out local species with new diseases and parasites or by simply devouring them.The Spanish slug, that can grow up to 15cm long, is thought to have
arrived in salads during the summer – and has already spread as far west
as Wales.Slug expert Les Noble, of Aberdeen University, warned yesterday the
creatures produce hundreds more eggs than the typical British slug and
pose a serious problem.He said: “These slugs are like conquistadors were to the Aztecs. Native slugs can’t keep pace and may become extinct.“They are simply being overrun and when you consider the Spanish slug
will happily make a meal out of a dead rabbit as much as out of dog
muck you can see why they are so successful.“We have already seen when these slugs move into an area the native
slugs vanish almost immediately. They can wipe out whole crops and
prevent them growing there again.”Sylvia Locke, 72, from the Amman Valley in Wales, has seen several in
her garden. She said: “We caught them eating snails. It was gruesome.“Our dog caught one, it was so big I thought it was a mouse.”
