The impetus for EXODUS NOW, and what has given it credibility in the black community is the Democrat Party’s increasingly secular stand, particularly making “same-sex marriage” an official part of the Party Platform. This came on the heels of a number of other actions which many Christians found objectionable: President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage; regulations ordering Catholic and other Christian institutions providing healthcare to distribute free contraceptives and abortion drugs; Convention speakers support for unrestricted abortion up to the moment before delivery; and taking God out of the party platform and no longer recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.Across the country, as black Christians debate the call to EXODUS NOW, Democrats are shaken. They desperately need the votes of black church goers. Democrats are responding by attacking Jackson personally on left wing blogs.“They can say anything they want about me,” says Jackson, “but I do not intend to leave Christians in bondage to a party that is hostile to everything Christians hold dear. Iranian leader: 'Psychological' blows hit currency

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the steep drop in Iran's currency Tuesday to "psychological pressures" linked to Western sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program.
The remarks were part of his attempt to deflect criticism from political rivals that his government's policies also have contributed to the nosedive of the Iranian rial, which has lost more than half its value against the U.S. dollar this year and has sharply pushed up costs for many imported goods.The price hikes have added to the burdens on Iran's economy as it struggles with tougher sanctions targeting its crucial oil exports and measures blocking it from key international banking networks. The U.S. and its allies have imposed the punishing measures to try to persuade Iran to negotiate over its nuclear program, which the West says is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Tehran insists the program is for peaceful purposes.An Iranian parliament member, Mohammad Bayatian, was quoted on the chamber's website, icana.ir, as saying that enough signatures have been collected to force Ahmadinejad to face questioning before lawmakers over the currency's tumble.Iran's currency fell again Tuesday, hitting a record low of 34,500 rials against the U.S. dollar on the unofficial street trading rate, which is widely followed in Iran. It was 29,500 rials to the dollar Sunday. Two years ago, it was close to 10,000 rials for $1."Are these (currency) fluctuations because of economic problems? The answer is no," Ahmadinejad told reporters in his first public comments in Iran since returning from the U.N. General Assembly. "Is this because of government policies? Never ... It's due to psychological pressures. It's a psychological battle."Ahmadinejad described the sanctions as part of a "heavy battle" that has succeeded in driving down oil exports "a bit," but he gave no precise figures. Some oil analysts estimate exports have fallen by more than 30 percent since July, when the 27-nation European Union halted purchases of Iranian crude.Iranian officials have insisted that Iran can ride out sanctions by expanding oil contracts with Asian markets such as China and India.But the currency nosedive could bring even more political heat on Ahmadinejad, who has been left severely weakened after challenging Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over the powers of the presidency. Ahmadinejad now could come under increasing domestic attacks before elections in June to pick his success.Earlier this year, Ahmadinejad became the first president hauled before the 290-seat parliament for questions over his public feud with Khamenei.The rial's sharp decline is blamed on a combination of Western sanctions and government policies, such as holding down bank interest, which prompted many people to withdraw their rials to exchange for foreign currency.  

Authorities: Oregon farmer eaten by his hogs

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon authorities are investigating how a farmer was eaten by his hogs.
Terry Vance Garner, 69, never returned after he set out to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm near the Oregon coast, the Coos County district attorney said Monday.A family member found Garner's dentures and pieces of his body in the hog enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed, District Attorney Paul Frasier said. Several of the hogs weighed 700 pounds or more.It's possible Garner had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, or was knocked over by the animals, then killed and eaten, Frasier said, adding that at least one hog had previously bitten Garner.The possibility of foul play is being investigated as well."For all we know, it was a horrific accident, but it's so doggone weird that we have to look at all possibilities," Frasier told The Register-Guard.A pathologist was unable to identify a cause or manner of death, the newspaper reported. The remains will be examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon.Terry Garner was "a good-hearted guy" who cared for several huge adult sows and a boar named Teddy, said his brother, Michael Garner, 75, of Myrtle Point.Piglets were typically sold to local 4-H kids."Those animals were his life," Michael Garner said. "He had all kinds of birds, and turkeys that ran all over the place. Everybody knew him."Michael Garner said one of the large sows bit his brother last year when he accidentally stepped on a piglet."He said he was going to kill it, but when I asked him about it later, he said he had changed his mind," the brother said.Domestic hogs are not typically known to be as aggressive as their feral cousins, but "there is some degree of danger associated with any animal," John Killefer, who heads the Animal and Rangeland Sciences Department at Oregon State University in Corvallis, told the newspaper.While pigs "are more omnivorous than other farm animals, (such as) cows," Killefer called the case highly unusual.Most hogs are raised until they reach a market weight of between 250 and 300 pounds, while breeding female pigs rarely weigh more than 400 pounds, Killefer said.

Russia has built a new military transport aircraft Il-476. Minister for Industry Denis Manturov told President Vladimir Putin that the transport plane was  ready for its first test flight.
According to the minister, the technical characteristics of the aircraft are absolutely. The plane is "fully digitalized, changes were made in the control system, there is a new power system, a new pilot complex, a state-of-the-art glass cockpit." "The production was moved from Uzbekistan to Russia. In fact, it is a new production, a project in its final stage," Manturov said.The flight range was increased by 25 percent. The load capacity was increased  by 15-17 percent. The Minister added that such aircraft are manufactured only in the United States and Russia. "We are forming a package of orders," the minister said, expressing a hope that "there will be other customers after the Ministry of Defense."By now, the plane has already performed two short flight; the plane is now ready for testing.Vladimir Putin positively accepted the news. "This is good, good news. There are not many such planes in the world, and they are in high demand in the civil and defense fields," said the president. According to him, "one needs to finalize all the details connected with the organization of the procurement" so that the price matches the product, NTV said.

The President also instructed the head of the Ministry for Industry and Trade Denis Manturov to prepare a meeting to discuss the development of the domestic aviation industry, RBC said.The IL-476 is an upgraded version of the military transport aircraft Il-76, which was previously produced commercially in Tashkent. In contrast to IL-76, the new plane has four Turbofan Engine with the thrust of 14.5 tons each. The engines are produced by Aviadvigatel (Perm). The maximum load was increased from 47 to 52 tons; the maximum take-off weight of the aircraft - from 190 to 210 tons. The range was increased up to 5,000 km. The state trial of the new aircraft is to be completed in 2013.However, according to Vzglyad, sources at the Defense Ministry said that the IL-476 did not meet the requirements of the Russian Air Force, as the aircraft did not have several important systems. It goes about the equipment for setting active and passive noise, the rear fire point, the formation flight system, the warning system for the use of arms. In addition, the aircraft should be complete  with handling equipment for dropping the cargoes with multy-canopy parachute systems.

"In the first stage, it goes about the creation of a big superholding on the base of Tactical Missiles and the Military-Industrial Corporation," said Rogozin.Tactical Missiles Corporation was created in 2002 on the basis of Zvezda-Strela federal state unitary enterprise. The corporation includes a number of companies that produce highly efficient missiles, guided bombs and air, land and sea-based arms systems."We found an acceptable solution, as to how the superholding will be created. "The project of the decision contains the basic idea - the hypersonic technology," said the official.Russia is inferior to America in the field of the development of hypersonic technologies. The Pentagon generously spends money on the program of the development of hypersonic aircraft. During the past ten years, the Pentagon has spent about $2 billion on the program.

During the Soviet era, our country had its own experience in this area. In particular, similar technologies were used in the creation of experimental hypersonic aircraft, the X-90, that became known in the West as AS-19 Koala.
Russian engineers worked hard to create supersonic missiles in the mid-1970s. The work was supposed to be completed in the early 1980s. The first hypersonic missile was supposed to be passed into service in 1983. Amnesty calls on Egypt to tackle legacy of abuse

CAIRO (AP) — Amnesty International on Tuesday took Egypt's new president to task for failing to address the "bloody legacy" of abuses by security forces committed under military rule after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, which continue even after the establishment of the country's first freely elected government.
The group urged President Mohammed Morsi to hold the military accountable for the killing, torture and sexual abuse of protesters during the 18 months when the generals held power after Mubarak's February 2011 ouster.It also said Morsi should rein in police forces, which it said still use excessive force to deal with protests and have tortured detainees. It called for the government to allow U.N. experts to investigate and assess how to deal with the problems."Unless there is a clear political will to confront this and to provide the families of the victims with truth and justice, things are not going to change," Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, deputy director for Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa Program, told The Associated Press."For the moment, police officers, soldiers are confident that they can commit violations with impunity without ever having to answer for any of their acts," she said.Two extensive reports released by the London-based human rights group in Cairo on Tuesday detailed cases of rights abuses by the army and police, focusing on six separate incidents of crackdowns on protests that killed at least 120 people. Amnesty said thousands of protesters were injured or maimed — with documented cases of loss of eyesight — during the crackdowns, and that detainees were tortured in custody.Most of the crackdowns took place during the post-Mubarak period of rule by a council of generals, during which soldiers had a major role in keeping security inside the country. The military has largely backed down from that role ever since Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, was inaugurated at the end of June as the new presidentBut Morsi's failure to seek accountability from the police and military for those abuses has only fueled a culture of impunity that is allowing violations to continue, Amnesty warned. One of the Amnesty documented cases of violent crackdown by the police against protesters took place after Morsi came to power in August, in which one was killed.Officials in Morsi's office did not respond to requests by The Associated Press for comment on the report.Karim Ennarah, a researcher with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights who spoke at a news conference by Amnesty on Tuesday, said it appeared that police abuses are getting worse in the three months since Morsi came to power.He cited the deaths of two people last month in the town of Meit Ghamr, outside Cairo. One was tortured in a police station, including being beaten in the head by a rifle butt, and then died before getting to a hospital. The second person was then killed when police opened fire with live ammunition on a crowd angered by the first man's death."The police is acting as if it is an armed gang. It lost control and is trying to regain it by resorting to excessive force," Ennarah said.In its reports, Amnesty said the country's new leadership must "tackle the bloody legacy of official abuse and guarantee that no one is above the law in Egypt."Security abuse and flagrant human rights violations were among the sparks that ignited the uprising against Mubarak. Thousands took to the streets initially to protest a young man's brutal death by police beating in 2010.After Mubarak's regime was ousted in the popular uprising and the army took over, protesters increasingly denounced the military for its excessive use of force, for targeting women protesters, beatings and sexual abuse — including the notorious "virginity tests" that female detainees were forced to go through after being taken into custody by soldiers.Amnesty noted that at least 12,000 civilians, mainly protesters, have been tried before military tribunals while only three soldiers and a military doctor have faced a military court over abuse of authority. And only one security officer was brought to trial for killing and injuring protesters in one of the six documented cases."The only thing we have done (since the uprising) is lose our sons. That's it," said Mary Daniel, the sister of a protester killed last year during a military crackdown on rally. "We have gone from bad to worse."Amnesty said the army's response to protests was "disproportionate," citing cases when live ammunition was fired as demonstrators lobbed stones or firebombs at the troops. It also cited incidents of army vehicles running down groups of protesters, in one case killing several demonstrators.Amnesty quoted one protester, Wael Saber Bshay, whose brother was crushed by a military armored personnel carrier during an Oct. 9, 2011 protest that killed 27 people, mostly Coptic Christians."We were in a state of shock that the army, which is supposed to protect us ... attacked us," Bshay told Amnesty. "If we were in a state of war with an enemy, I don't think this would have happened."
The Amnesty report also documented that Egypt continued to receive deliveries of small arms and equipment from abroad, including from its largest supplier the United States, despite the violent crackdowns.
In one case, the report said, a U.S. shipment believed to contain tear gas was dispatched to Egypt on Oct. 13, 2011, just days after the protest by the Christians was crushed. Another shipment from the U.S. arrived days after a November protest in which nearly 50 people were killed, Amnesty reported.The group said authorities should allow visits by the U.N.'s special rapporteur on torture and the U.N. working group on arbitrary detention and torture, whose requests for visits were ignored by the Mubarak regime.
For abuses to halt, those responsible must be brought to trial before an independent, civilian court, said Suzanne Nossel, the executive director of Amnesty International USA."If President Morsi truly wants to reform Egypt, he must establish the principle that no one can be above the law, including the army and the security services," Nossel said. "Without accountability by the army and security forces who are responsible for decades of human rights violations, justice for victims will remain elusive."Amnesty said it has yet to receive a response from Morsi for a memorandum it had sent to him on the day he was sworn in, in which it details how Egypt can address the history of human rights and open a new page."This is disappointing," said Sahraoui.

Officials mull seismic tests near Calif nuke plant

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Plans to use an array of powerful air cannons in an undersea seismic study near a Central California nuclear power plant have federal and state officials juggling concerns over marine life with public safety.Pacific Gas & Electric Co. wants to use big air guns to emit strong sound waves into a large, near-shore area that includes parts of marine reserves to make three-dimensional maps of fault zones, some of which were discovered in 2008, near its Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.State law mandated that the company conduct extensive seismic studies. After the company decided that it would use the high-energy seismic imaging technology for the study, a state environmental impact analysis found the project was likely to have "unavoidable adverse effects" on marine life and the environment. Biologists, environmental groups and fishermen have opposed using the high-energy air guns, saying the blasts have potential to harm endangered whales, California sea otters and other creatures frequenting these waters."I am very concerned about impacts to marine mammals, especially some of the large whales including blue, fin, and humpback whales," said John Calambokidis, an Olympia, Wash.-based marine biologist who has studied Pacific Ocean whales for decades. "There are many uncertainties on the impact of this type of operation on whales, especially since we have not seen this type of large air gun survey off California for a long time."The $64 million, ratepayer-funded effort to understand seismic threats to the plant has intensified since the disastrous 2011 Tohoku quake and tsunami, which disabled reactors at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. Quake experts were surprised by the 9.0-magnitude quake on a fault that scientists did not believe would produce a quake stronger than 8.0.Although the Japan disaster demonstrated that predicting the strength of a quake on a given fault is an inexact science, PG&E wants to know if the newly discovered faults near San Luis Obispo are connected to existing ones that have already been studied. Seismologists typically use a fault's length to estimate the maximum possible earthquake it can produce."People need to understand, we're living in the world post-Fukushima, so we need to go back and review everything we think we know about the seismic threat situation around important structures like this power plant," said Bruce Gibson, a former seismologist who now serves as a San Luis Obispo County supervisor."Unfortunately, from an environmental impact standpoint, the only real way to get the images is to put high energy sound into the earth."If the project gains approval from myriad agencies, scientists would tow up to 18 air guns behind a boat and blast loud sound into the water over a 530-square-nautical-mile area. Hundreds of sensors would be placed strategically on the seafloor, picking up the reverberations and allowing computers to create three-dimensional maps in technology similar to an ultrasound.The air guns and sensors would be dragged through an area that includes two state marine protected areas — Cambria and White Rock — and is adjacent to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Dozens of endangered and threatened species use these waters.A similar seismic survey is being planned near the state's other nuclear plant at San Onofre, in San Diego County to the south.A State Lands Commission environmental impact study found on Aug. 20 there would be "unavoidable impacts" to marine life in the area during the San Luis Obispo testing.But the commission also concluded the "benefit of the project outweighs the unavoidable adverse impacts," said Jennifer DeLeon, a senior environmental scientist at the commission.While similar high energy seismic surveys have been done on the Pacific Coast — most recently off Washington — PG&E said monitors there did not observe harm to whales or other marine mammals.The powerful cannons used in these projects can be fatal to animals that stray too close to them. Also, biologists said the loud noises could drive migrating whales and their calves apart, and that mortally wounded whales often sink in the ocean, so it is difficult to see how the tests affect the creatures.Efforts to mitigate such impacts will reduce, but not eliminate, harm to animals, according to the company and earth scientists."The sound source for the PG&E imaging project is a type that has been used for several decades by scientists and industry," Donna Blackman, a geophysicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, said in an email. "Known cases of possible impacts on marine mammals are very few. An integral part of using this type of system is to have continuous monitoring for whales within close range of the ship."PG&E said it is spending $8 million on monitoring for the project, said Mark Krausse, a PG&E director."If the ship is coming within 1.1 mile of any mammal, not just a marine or listed, but any mammal, we have to shut down," Krausse told the California Fish and Game Commission on Monday.PG&E wanted to start work Nov. 1 and continue through Dec. 31 — a time window believed to have lower whale traffic off the Central Coast. But the company has asked for an extension of its hearing before the California Coastal Commission, and other agencies are not expected to approve testing permits by then.Major environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council oppose the plan, saying adequate seismic research already has been done, and that too little is understood about potential long-term impacts of the air guns on the marine environment."The marine protected areas were created (so) marine wildlife could thrive without human interference," said Amanda Wallner of Sierra Club California. "We share concern over earthquake risk at Diablo Canyon. However, we don't believe this is the best way or the only way to determine seismic risks."

Now, both sides are talking.If the deal goes ahead — and there are many hurdles before governments will give the final green light — analysts say the consequences could be far-reaching.“It could create a genuine defense-aerospace industrial champion for Europe,” said Alexander Nicoll, military expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. “Indeed, the deal would be a natural reaction to the prospect of shrinking defense-equipment markets.”It could also give Europe’s military industry and governments the motivation to radically reassess the way they organize a sector in which nation-states still compete against one another rather than work toward building a coherent European military policy.
“The BAE-EADS deal could be a big advantage for Europe,” said Joachim Schild, a professor of comparative politics at Trier University in Germany. “It could lead to more integration of Europe’s defense sector to Europe’s benefit.”The complex negotiations between these two giant companies, which had combined revenues last year of €72 billion, or $92 billion, coincide with a sharp decline in military budgets across Europe.Since 2010, military spending among most European countries has fallen between 8 percent and 30 percent, according to NATO.Europe’s two biggest and most important military powers — Britain, which has already cut its spending 8 percent, and France — are seeking more ways to cooperate on projects in order to save and create efficiencies. The French president, François Hollande, is preparing a white paper on the military. Substantial cuts are expected.So great is the pressure on governments to find savings that there is a real danger that the cuts could lead to “the demilitarization of Europe.” Defense companies would be driven abroad to seek orders.“Demilitarization would have a hugely negative impact on Europe’s security and defense ambitions,” said Claudia Major, a defense analyst at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.“European governments do understand how serious the situation has become,” she added. The question is what they are doing about it. This is where the BAE-EADS deal could have an impact. It shows the urgent need for much closer integration of Europe’s military companies.
“Maybe the talks around this merger can serve as a catalyst for more consolidation in the European defense industrial base,” said Guy Ben-Ari, an expert on military industries at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “There’s just too much duplication of weapons systems.”The United States has long urged the Europeans to consolidate the military sector to reduce duplication but also to focus on equipment the Europeans really need so that they can take on a bigger share of the burden.The NATO mission last year in Libya, in which the Europeans boasted that the United States had led from behind, again confirmed Washington’s worst fears. The Americans had to provide most of the intelligence and refueling aircraft as well as the missiles and bombs.Pledges since then by NATO and E.U. countries to “pool and share” resources have been largely rhetorical.Some governments, like Poland and Sweden or Britain and France, are cooperating. Yet, as analysts point out, pooling and sharing, while difficult enough, does not solve Europe’s problems as long as the Europeans refuse to link the consolidation of the military sector to a genuine security strategy.Even the United States’ strategic and military shift toward the Asia-Pacific region has prompted little debate in Europe about how it should arrange its security and military policy. Somehow, Europeans still believe the old trans-Atlantic relationship is intact.“In the United States, there is much less focus on Europe,” Mr. Ben-Ari said. “From the American perspective, there is no E.U.-wide vision for security and defense policy or for the defense industry.”The view that the Europeans do not want to even consider a new, common security strategy means that European governments might squander the benefits of a BAE-EADS merger.In Britain, fears are growing that the BAE-EADS deal would orient the British military industry away from the United States and toward Europe, endangering the special relationship.“An alliance of BAE and EADS does not mean that we are marching further towards a common European defense policy,” Liam Fox, a Conservative British lawmaker and former defense minister, wrote in The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper.“There are many of us who would resist this by every means possible, but without a merger, we risk losing our influence and the great benefits that we have in BAE.”Yet that may be the smaller price to pay if the result could be a decisive push toward a more consolidated European military industry and a clearer European security strategy.Judy Dempsey is editor in chief of Strategic Europe, a project of Carnegie Europe. Military says NKorea has 'powerful modern weapons'

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) -- North Korea is armed with "powerful modern weapons" capable of defeating the United States, a top military chief in Pyongyang said Wednesday, a claim that matches the country's regular rhetoric but is questioned by experts.The comments by Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho at a meeting marking the 80th anniversary of the army's founding came amid increased speculation abroad about the nation's missile arsenal and nuclear ambitions.Washington worries about the possibility that North Korea might develop a reliable intercontinental ballistic missile and a nuclear bomb small enough to use as a payload.But outside experts believe that is still a long way off.North Korea has enough plutonium for about four to eight "simple" bombs, according to estimates by scientist Siegfried Hecker of the Center for International Security and Cooperation, but it doesn't yet appear to have the ability to make bombs small enough to mount on a missile. The country's past long-range rocket tests -- in 1998, 2006, 2009 and earlier this month -- are believed to have ended in failure.Ri emphasized the importance of strengthening the military to defend North Korea against threats it sees from the United States and South Korea. Ri, who is chief of the army's General Staff, did not provide further details about North Korea's weapons, but his call to arms comes as the United States, Britain and others warn the North against provocations that would further heighten tensions. The Korean peninsula remains officially at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.Earlier this month, North Korea launched a long-range rocket in what its officials called a failed attempt to put a satellite into space. The launch was decried internationally as a banned test of long-range missile technology.The rocket broke into pieces shortly after liftoff. The U.N.
