Days of Awe Begin Sunday Evening with the New Year Holiday

The Jewish People begin the High Holydays, or Days of Awe, on Sunday evening, on the first of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, ushering in the year 5773 with nearly a month of special days: Two days of Rosh Hashannah on Monday and Tuesday, the Fast of Gedaliah on Wednesday and then Shabbat Shuva, the Sabbath of Repentance. Rosh Hashannah is also the start of the Ten Days of Repentance which culminate with the solemn Fast of Yom Kippur on the tenth day of Tishrei. Special verses about repentance are added to the silent Amidah prayer said three times daily during these ten days. Sukkoth, or Tabernacles, the holiday of joy, follows five days later.The preceding month of Elul has been dedicated to effecting change and approaching G-d. The shofar was sounded each morning after services, and Psalm 27 alluding to all three holidays was recited daily (and is continued till the end of Sukkot). Selichot, throughout the month in the Sephardi community and for the past week in the Ashkenazi community, were said at dawn.
Teshuvah, Repentance
This is Judaism's time for introspection, when Jews look back and examine their actions in the year that has just ended, seeking to improve their observance of the Torah’s commandments directed towards G-d and towards their fellow man. They are expected to ask forgiveness from those they may have offended or hurt during the past year, a stipulation for Heavenly forgiveness for sins towards one's fellow man.Repentance includes several steps: recognition of the sin, confessing the sin, and resolving not to repeat it in the future. Many books and articles have been written on how to do teshuva, repentance, with the basic text being Maimonides' "Hilkhot Teshuva" [The Laws of Teshuva, ed.]. Rabbi Joseph Ber Soloveitchik's "Al Hateshuva", based on Maimonides' work, has become a classic text.  Both works, and many others, are available in English.Rabbi Chaim Druckman, venerable head of Or Etzion Yeshiva, formerly MK, head of all the hesder yeshivas and the Conversion Authority, said Monday at a study day about the Days of Awe that repentance, or teshuva, is a return to a person's source.
Fast of Gedaliah and Shabbt Shuvah
The Fast of Gedaliah commemorates the end of Jewish rule in the Land of Israel following the destruction of the First Holy Temple some 2,500 years ago, prompting the sages to say that the death of a righteous man is equivalent to the destruction of the Temple.On the Sabbath of Repentance this coming Saturday, a special chapter is read from the book of the prophet Hosea, calling the Jewish people to repent and return to G-d. Rabbis traditionally deliver a sermon, drasha, on repentance, in the afternoon.
Observing The New Year Holiday
The Jewish New Year has several names, among them the Day of Remembrance and the Day of Judgment. It is a time for careful stock-taking of one's relationship with G-d, and the longer Rosh Hashannah morning prayers filled with emotion, responsive readings and songs, are therefore intense and inspirational – usually led by a carefully chosen cantor or member of the congregation - concentrating on G-d's Kingship, eternal presence and His judgment of all creatures.“Repentance, prayer and charity avert the evil decree” is a central line from the Machzor, the special holiday prayer book, listing the course of action that it is hoped will lead to meriting  a good year.Upon returning home after the evening prayers, symbolic foods – simanim - are served, whose names in Hebrew allow a play on words. They include pomegranates (for our merits to be numerous) , beets and carrots (for our enemies to be destroyed) that we lead rather than follow (fish head).
There are especially sweet ones, such as apples dipped in honey, to symbolize a sweet year. In Israel, many Ashkenazim have adopted the more varied simanim of their Sephardi neighbors, adding to their traditional fish head, carrots, pomegranates, beets and apples, the more exotic ruvia, kara, and more. Booklets are available with the lists and special sayings for each food.Fruits that require a special Shehecheyanu blessing, said for something new, because they are being eaten for the first time since the previous season, are served on the second night. Pomegranates are often used for this purpose. Traditionally, children - adults too -wear a new garment for the first time the second night which calls for saying the blessing. Candles are lit both nights, but it is forbidden to light a match on the holiday, so an existing flame is used to kindle them and the Shehecheyanu blessing said while lighting on the second night, somewhat questionable as this is one long holiday and not a new one, is intended to also cover the new fruit and clothes.Another name for the holiday is Day of Sounding the Shofar. Based on the commandment in Numbers 29:1, 100 shofar blasts are dramatically sounded throughout the prayers, "awakening" us to improve our ways. The congregation refrains from speech from the first shofar blasts until the last ones at the end of the service..The Tashlikh prayer is recited on the first afternoon, preferably near a live stream of water in which we ask G-d to "throw away" our sins.
In Israel
Many religious Israeli youth spend the holiday at secular kibbutzim to lead the services, volunteer to lead services in the IDF and in hospitals.The IDF is prepared with tons of honey and apples, has received Rosh Hashannah cards from hundreds of kindergarteners, but is also on careful guard to keep synagogues and residents secure on the holiday.  Breslover Hassidim and others continue a custom of going to Uman, Ukraine, to pray at the gravesite synagogues of their spiritual leader, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, who passed away in Tishrei of 1810. Prominent rabbis, however, oppose the idea of leaving the Holy Land to spend Rosh Hashanah in the Diaspora.On the  Fast of Yom Kippur, the most solemn day of the Jewish year, the Kol Nidrei prayer ushers in the holiday at night and a shofar blast signals its end the next night. It is customary to begin building the sukkah for the seven (or nine in the Diaspora) days of that happy festival, right after the fast, so as to perform a mitzvah as soon as possible.

Three Arab youths were caught Saturday night desecrating Jewish holy books at a sacred Jewish cemetery in Jerusalem. The vandals were in the process of trying to burn several Tehillim – volumes of the Book of Psalms authored by the Biblical King David – at the ancient Mount of Olives Cemetery.The three perpetrators, Arab teens about 16 years old, are residents of the Arab neighborood adjacent to the cemetery. All were arrested; two confessed to the crime, and the third was also found to have been involved although he continued to deny it. Police told reporters they plan to expedite prosecution of the case.
When a controversial Florida-based Christian cleric burned the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an in 2010, the incident sparked worldwide rage and violent riots by Muslims around the globe. One week ago, an obscure, amateur video clip produced by an individual in the U.S. mocking the life of the Prophet Mohammed, founder of Islam, sparked massive violent attacks against U.S. and other Western diplomatic missions around the world as well.A U.S. Ambassdor, three American diplomats and two U.S. Marines were murdered and diplomatic missions in Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and Sudan were badly damaged by Muslim extremists last week -- all using the "insulting" video clip as the excuse.The Mount of Olives cemetery is an ancient, sacred Jewish burial ground still used today for interrment of modern rabbinic leaders along side holy Torah sages dating back thousands of years. The great Torah Sage and head of the worldwide Lithuanian hareidi-religious yeshiva world, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv was laid to rest at the cemetery earlier this summer, when he passed away at age 102. Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the modern State of Israel, is among the righteous Jewish leaders who are interred at the cemetery.But there have been numerous reports in various news outlets – including Arutz Sheva – noting complaints about countless incidents of Arab vandalism, desecration and attacks on Jews at and near the site. Some examples:This past July, Arabs in a car who struck a vehicle with Jewish passengers near the cemetery got out of their car and began to attack the Jewish driver and his daughter. The lone police officer present was unable to stop the violence and was forced to call for backup. In a separate incident, a Jew who visited his grandfather's grave at the cemetery in June was horrified to discover local Arabs had used the cemetery as a place to throw out trash and burn household waste.In February, U.S. Representatives Elliot Engel and Jerry Nadler, and Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations Malcolm Hoenlein were attacked by Arab rock throwers during their own visit to the Mount of Olives. The two lawmakers and Hoenlein all noted past video evidence of Arab vandalism and desecration at the Jewish holy site. Charley J. Levine, adviser to the Preservation Committee in Israel, told Arutz Sheva at the time, “This is not a freak occurrence. This sort of vicious vandalism and desecration occurs at Har HaZeitim (Mount of Olives) every single day – some orchestrated, and some spontaneous."

Israel says U.S. must be firm on stopping Iran nuclear threat

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A senior Israeli official said on Sunday the United States should not wait for Iran to decide on building a nuclear weapon before it considers military action against the Islamic Republic
"When is the point at which it should be stopped? Just when the bomb is assembled on the tip of the missile and is ready for launch?" Dan Meridor, deputy Israeli prime minister with responsibility for nuclear and intelligence affairs, said in a radio interview.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who sees a mortal threat to Israel from Tehran, has hinted he could resort to war unless Washington and other world powers give Iran an ultimatum on curbing its uranium enrichment programme.U.S. President Barack Obama has rebuffed Netanyahu's lobbying, opening a rift between the allies although they agree that Iran has yet to take the final steps of purifying uranium to military grade and assembling a warhead.Tehran denies seeking the bomb, saying its nuclear projects are for peaceful energy and medical purposes. Diplomatic talks between it and world powers have so-far proved fruitless.Speaking on Israel Radio, Meridor praised the Obama administration for its insistence that it will not allow Iran to get nuclear arms. Fury over Mohammad video simmers on in Muslim world

DUBAI (Reuters) - A wave of furious anti-Western protests against a film mocking the Prophet Mohammad abated on Saturday, but U.S. policy in the Muslim world remained overshadowed by 13 minutes of amateurish video on the Internet.Washington ordered family members and non-essential staff to leave the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, which was attacked on Friday, after Sudan turned down its request to send Marines to bolster security.In addition, it pulled non-essential personnel out of its embassy in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, also attacked on Friday, and urged American citizens to leave the city.Marine platoons have been sent to U.S. missions in Yemen and Libya since the unrest erupted.Elsewhere, riot police stormed into Cairo's Tahrir Square and rounded up hundreds of people after four days of clashes and demands from protesters for the U.S. ambassador to be expelled.Saudi Arabia's highest religious authority denounced the attacks on diplomats and embassies across the Middle East as un-Islamic.But the Yemen-based branch of al Qaeda applauded the killings of U.S. diplomats in Libya and urged Muslims to kill more, calling the video posted on the Internet another chapter in the "crusader wars" against Islam.A California man convicted of bank fraud, who has denied reports that he was involved in the film's production, was taken in for questioning by officers investigating possible probation violations stemming from the making of the film.

The video, circulating on the Internet under several titles including "Innocence of Muslims," portrays Mohammad as a womanizer and a fool."We were attacked by Obama, and his government, and the Coptic Christians living abroad!" shouted one long-bearded Muslim protester outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Friday.In the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, who has denied involvement in the film in a phone call to a Coptic Christian bishop, was ushered out of his home and into a waiting car by sheriff's deputies, his face shielded by a scarf, hat and sunglasses.He was voluntarily interviewed by federal probation officers and left about 30 minutes later, a police spokesman said.U.S. officials have said authorities are not investigating the film project itself, and that even if it was inflammatory or led to violence, simply producing it cannot be considered a crime in the United States, which has strong free speech laws.
A statement posted on a website used by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula called on Muslims to "follow the example of Omar al-Mukhtar's descendants (Libyans), who killed the American ambassador".

Pope makes peace appeal at open-air Mass in Beirut

BEIRUT (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI made a sweeping appeal Sunday for peace in Syria and the Middle East, decrying the violence "which generates so much suffering."Speaking at an open-air Mass before a huge crowd, he urged the international community and Arab countries in particular to find a solution to end the conflict in neighboring Syria."Why so much horror? Why so many dead," Benedict said, lamenting that "the first victims are women and children."With pilgrims from across the Middle East in the crowd he said Christians must do their part to end the "grim trail of death and destruction" in the region."I appeal to you all to be peacemakers," Benedict said.Benedict spoke from an altar built on land reclaimed with debris from Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, pressing ahead with his call for peace and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.The Rev.
