JERUSALEM - Israel’s Modiin Energy and Adira Energy Corp. confirmed the discovery of an commercially viable quantity of oil just 15 miles off the coast of Tel Aviv.
Late last year, Modiin and Adira published surveys of the 150-square-mile Gabriella field showing that the site likely contained significant quantities of both oil and natural gas.Speaking to shareholders in Tel Aviv, Adira officials said Gabriella is expected to yield 232 million barrels of oil and 1.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Add that to the 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas discovered last year at other Mediterranean sites, and Israel’s energy situation is starting to look much improved.Modiin majority shareholder Tzahi Sultan told Israel’s Globes business newspaper that drilling at the Gabriella site should begin later this year, and a well will be in place producing oil in about five years.

Minister or Public Security Yitzhak Aharonovitch said Tuesday the provocateurs will be dealt with in a determined and quick way.He explained that the activists would be stopped at the airport and immediately deported.If they arrive to Israel they will be identified, removed from the plane, their entry into Israel will be prevented and they will be moved to a detention facility until they are flown out of Israel, Aharonovitch said.

A state trooper and a motorist reported a large object falling out of the sky in Litchfield, Conn. -- a green, glowing, whale-sized object that plunged into Litchfield Lake. State authorities said no go; they failed to locate anything mysterious. The Republican-American of Waterbury reports that a person driving in Litchfield at about 2 a.m. Tuesday reported that an object the size of a whale fell from the sky and crashed into Bantam Lake. Officials say that at about the same time, a state trooper 10 miles away in Warren called dispatchers to report that something fell out of the sky and landed near Bantam or Morris.Morris fighters made several passes up and down the lake in a boat looking for a possible plane crash, but didn't find any debris.Authorities called off the search, leaving the mystery unsolved.But science may have the answer: According to the National Weather Service, there was a meteor shower that morning, WTNH.com reported. One of the big concerns surrounding the practical devastation of those nuclear facilities is the radiation it will unleash into the surroundings.Destroying one of the most likely Iranian targets, the 1000-megawatt Bushehr nuclear plant, would create just such a concern.

North Korea's satellite launch, planned as a celebration of the centenary of the birth of its founding President, Kim Il Sung, failed sometime shortly after 7:40 a.m. Friday when the first stage of the Unha-3 rocket dropped to the Yellow Sea about 165 km west of Seoul. After weeks of antagonism between North Korea and the U.S., South Korea and Japan, who said the launch was the equivalent of a ballistic missile test, the failure offered a moment of respite.At no time were the missile or the resultant debris a threat, noted a statement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command. In a rare admission, North Korea's state-run news service acknowledged the satellite failed to enter its preset orbit.It said technicians were investigating the cause.But the ballistic bust does not mean that North Korean threat has lessened significantly. The isolated authoritarian state still possesses significant conventional artillery with which it could attack aSeoul, just 55 km south of the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea.I don't think we should be taking great sigh of relief that the test failed,says Rory Medcalf, director of the Sydney-based Lowy Institute's international-security program. I don't think the fundamental issue is about North Korea's ability to reach the U.S. From a regional perspective the fact is that North Korea can wreak havoc on South Korea and do a lot harm to Japan. There the insecurity is very much alive.

And today's embarrassment could give the North further incentive to provide a display of military prowess, possibly in the form of a nuclear test. That was the pattern in 2009, when a North Korea followed up a failed satellite launch with a nuclear test, its second. One year later North Korean forces sunk a South Korean naval vessel, killing 46 seamen, and then months later shelled a South Korean island, killing two soldiers and two civilians. It was only in 2011 that Pyongyang began a series of discussions that led to the Feb. 29 leap-day deal, in which it would curtail nuclear activities and missile tests in exchange for U.S. food aid. The U.S. has said that deal is dead.Analysts say North Korea's satellite plan was driven by domestic concerns, particularly strengthening the position of 29-year-old leader Kim Jong Un, who was installed after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in December. This is actually more sensitive than the failure of the previous two tests in 1998 and 2009 for a few reasons, says Medcalf.First, obviously there's a need for [Kim Jong Un] to assert his credibility as a strong leader and do it in front of the people of North Korea. Surrounded by a security detail of dark suits and bow ties, it was Farrakhan’s white suit that commanded the stage.Speaking to a cheering crowd that filled most of the auditorium, Farrakhan touched on sensitive religious and racial issues while using his infamous vernacular to hammer some astounding points.The minister began by referring to the national controversy that had been built around his appearance at the university.Here in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, and even in other parts of the country, they didn’t like outsiders coming to disturb the plantation. So when an outsider came that master thought might upset the plantation mentality, he would threaten the slave and go,don’t you listen to him, he’s a hater.Well you just met me! Who taught you to hate your black self? It wasn’t Farrakahn.On the topic of religion and race Farrakhan got personal,If He made us black – with kinky hair, broad nose, thick lips – if I don’t like me, how could I like the God who created me?

Paul Gattis, a reporter for The Huntsville Times who was in the audience wrote, [Farrakhan] also repeatedly said that it is not known if Jesus was a Caucasian, as He is typically portrayed. Farrakhan made the same point about Elijah, the Jewish prophet.Farrakhan referenced the Jewish Seder holiday and specifically the Jewish tradition of the Prophet Elijah’s arrival to each doorway on Passover night: If Elijah was at the door and he was black, you would call 911 and say there’s a n****r at the door, claiming he’s Elijah! Because you are not trained to accept wisdom from a black person, no matter how wise that black person is the minister explained,Jesus was a black man.Most astoundingly, Farrakhan made the argument that Jesus was not Christian.Because Jesus said Not My will, but Thy will.You know what we call that in Arabic? The controversial minister launched into a diatribe on the story of Cain and Abel, with his own additions.When Cain came to present his offering before God as a tiller of the ground, the scripture says God did not respect his offering. I’m better than those who have translated it out of the original tongues and revised it to fit their purpose! What makes you better? Because I am taught of God.

BEIRUT (AP) — In the first major test of a U.N.-brokered truce, tens of thousands of Syrians poured into the streets Friday for anti-government protests, activists said. Security forces used live fire, tear gas and beat some protesters, but there was no immediate sign of widescale shelling, sniper attacks or other potential violations of the cease-fire.At least three protesters were shot dead by security forces, activists said.President Bashar Assad's regime has cracked down on protest rallies in the past and suggested it would not allow them to resume Friday, insisting protesters need to seek permission first. Syrian forces tightened security in public squares and outside mosques.A major outbreak of violence at a chaotic rally could give government forces a pretext for ending the peace plan, which aims to calm a year-old uprising that has killed 9,000 people and pushed the country toward civil war.The truce is at the center of international envoy Kofi Annan's six-point plan to stop the bloodshed and launch talks on a political transition. A 13-month uprising against Assad had become increasingly violent in response to his brutal crackdown.

Annan's spokesman said the plan has been relatively respected despite the continued presence of government troops and heavy weapons in population centers. Ahmad Fawzi said an advance team of U.N. observers was poised to enter Syria if the Security Council gives the green light later Friday. A larger contingent of up to 250 observers could be approved next week if the truce holds, he said.French President Nicholas Sarkozy said the Syrian regime must be closely monitored. The Observatory said one marcher was killed in the opposition stronghold of Hama as he and others tried to reach the main Assi Square, which protesters had occupied for several weeks last year. Two others were killed and 11 wounded in the southern town of Nawa when protesters came under fire from security forces as they gathered in the central square, said area activist Adel al-Omari.The grassroots Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said that across Syria, at least seven protesters were killed by troops Friday. It was impossible to confirm casualty tolls because the country is largely sealed off from journalists.In Damascus, troops and pro-government militiamen known as Shabiha surrounded a mosque in the Qadam neighborhood and beat people staging a protest inside the house of worship, said the LCC. In another Damascus neighborhood, Barzeh, demonstrators called for the downfall of the regime, the LCC said. In Aleppo, troops fired tear gas at marchers gathering outside the Grand Mosque, the group said.Fadi al-Yassin, an activist who took part in a protest in a town in the northern province of Idlib, said about 6,000 people participated, including women and children. Protesters dispersed peacefully after the march and troops did not open fire at them, said al-Yassin, who did not want to name the location, for fear of government reprisals.The truce, the first brokered by the international community since the Syria crisis erupted in March 2011, calls for the Syrian government to allow peaceful protests.
