Southern Israel was hit by a barrage of at least 35 rockets and missiles on Friday evening, resulting in casualties.Three foreign workers were injured after a mortar shell was fired from Gaza and exploded in an area in the Eshkol Regional Council, according to a Channel 2 News report.Magen David Adom spokesman Zaki Heller told Channel 2 that one of the workers was seriously injured, a second was moderately injured and that the third suffered from shock. The seriously injured man was being airlifted to the Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, according to Channel 10 News.Rockets also hit the city of Ashkelon and the community of Gan Yavne, Channel 2 reported. In Gan Yavne, one man was hurt as he ran after hearing a siren, and in Ashdod two residents were lightly injured after they tripped on their way to a secured area. One man suffered shock in Ashkelon.The report said that many residents reported of hearing explosions in Ashdod, but it is not yet known whether rockets exploded near the city. The Eshkol Regional Council reported that the rockets caused damage to a vehicle and to power lines.Explosions were also heard in Be'er Sheva, where the Iron Dome defense system shot down a Grad missile which had been fired at the city. Channel 10 News reported that Iron Dome had managed to shoot down at least six rockets throughout the day.The escalation in the rocket and mortar attacks began after the IDF hit and killed several Gaza-based terrorist gangs, including a senior leader of the Popular Resistance Committees terror group.

Shortly before 5:00 p.m. (Israel time) on Friday afternoon, IAF aircraft struck and killed the head of the Popular Resistance Committees, Zuhir Musa Ahmed Qaisi and his deputy, Mahmoud Ahmed Mahmoud Hanani.Shortly after 8:00 p.m. (Israel time), the IDF struck two additional terrorist cells, one in central Gaza and one in northern Gaza. According to reports in the Israeli media, two terrorists were killed in this attack, both from the Islamic Jihad.The members of both terrorist cells had been planning to fire rockets into southern Israel when they were struck, according to an IDF statement. Direct hits at the targets were identified.The Popular Resistance Committees said following the killing of its leader that the group is no longer committed to a ceasefire with Israel.We call on our fighters to respond to the Israeli aggression with all their might, the organization said in a statement quoted by Channel 10 News. The statement stressed that the terror group will continue the path of resistance and jihad and that the elimination of our commanders and fighters will only strengthen us to continue fighting.Earlier on Friday, Gaza terrorists fired two mortar shells at Israeli towns in the Eshkol region on Friday afternoon.

Gaza terrorists continued to pummel southern Israel with rocket fire on the Sabbath. They fired 11 rockets on Saturday, bringing the total number of launches to over 100 since the IAF killed Zuheir al-Qaisi, the head of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), on Friday. Al Qaisi was killed following intelligence that the PRC was about to launch a deadly attack on Highway 12, which straddles the border with Egypt.The IDF's English-language website counted approximately 135 rockets by 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Israel time), 74 of which struck within Israel. It said the Iron Dome system intercepted the rockets in 28 out of 31 attempts to do so.Eight Israelis have been wounded by the rockets. Most suffered light to moderate wounds. One, a foreign worker, was seriously injured.The Bethlehem-based Ma'an news service reported that 15 Arabs have been killed in IAF airstrikes over the weekend.IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz conducted a situation assessment meeting at the Gaza Division Headquarters Saturday morning. The IDF said in a statement Saturday morning that its aircraft had attacked six targets overnight: two weapons storage sites and two launching holes in northern Gaza, a weapons production site in central Gaza and a terror activity center in southern Gaza. The strikes are in response to the rocket fire at Israel.In addition, the IDF said, aircraft fired at a terrorist in central Gaza in the course of the night, and at six additional terror cells in northern and central Gaza. Highway 12 has been closed off to civilians because of the alert regarding a terrorist plan to carry out an attack there. The IDF is combing the route. The highway was reopened to civilian traffic less than three weeks ago, after it had been closed since August following a terror attack in which eight Israeli were murdered.Schools will be closed in Be'er Sheva Sunday. Additional communities may also decide to keep schools closed.

Yochanan Danino placed the police on Level 3 alert Saturday evening – one notch beneath the top level of alert reserved for a state of emergency.Danino also ordered that the nationalist demonstration planned to take place opposite MK Hanin Zouabi's home in Nazareth be cancelled.A Level 3 alert means that police courses will be temporarily halted and police personnel on holiday will be called back on duty. Roadblocks will be placed at the entrances to cities and both visible and undercover patrols will be stepped up.About 1,200 police were to take part in providing security for a demonstration by nationalists outside the home of MK Hanin Zouabi (Balad), in protest of her continued activity against the state of Israel. The request to hold the protest was filed two months ago, after the Attorney General and Government Legal Advisor said he would not pursue criminal charges against Zouabi for her role in the Marmara incident.Police sources had told Arutz Sheva that in effect, the entire Northern District was to be on alert to prevent clashes between the demonstrators and Arabs.The Maariv-NRG website reported Saturday night that nationalists led by MK Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) said they would hold the demonstration despite the police announcement. Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Saturday that the IDF's Iron Dome system carried out 30 attempted interceptions of rockets fired from Gaza since Friday, successfully shooting down 27 of them. This is a 90% success rate – a very high percentage – and we have 13 or 14 dead in Gaza and some serious damage done to the Resistance Committees' infrastructures, he added.The IDF Website counted 31 attempted interceptions, with 28 successes, by 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening.Barak explained: The current round began with the hit on Zuheir al-Qaisi, one of the heads of the Popular Committees, who apparently was in the process of planning a large scale terror attack that I cannot yet say has been thwarted. This turned into a round [of fighting].Barak congratulated all those involved in Iron Dome, which proved itself to be an effective – if expensive – anti-missile defense over the weekend. This is the time to say thank you to Iddo [Maj. Gen.
