Palestinians say to seek UN, Arab league talks on settlement AFP – JAN 1,12

Palestinian leaders decided on Saturday to seek sessions of the UN Security Council and the Arab League, hoping for action to halt Israeli settlement.A statement by the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation said continued settlement growth in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem was liable to destroy all chances of a peace process and the two-state solution.We shall go to the Security Council to discuss (it), said the statement, read by PLO Secretary General Yasser Abed Rabbo. We shall invite the Arab League at the highest level to follow up on this matter.It did not say when it hoped the bodies would convene.The international peacemaking Quartet of the United Nations, the United States, Russia and the European Union has given the parties until January 26 to submit comprehensive proposals on territory and security.Earlier this month Britain, France, Germany and Portugal led condemnation by Security Council members of increased settlement construction in the occupied territories and growing attacks by settlers on Palestinians.

NKorea vows to defend Kim Jong Un unto death

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea vowed Sunday to stage an all-out drive for prosperity as it unites behind new leader Kim Jong Un, ushering in 2012 with promises to resolve food shortages, bolster its military and defend Kim Jong Il's young son unto death.The pledge in North Korea's annual New Year's message, released by the official Korean Central News Agency, comes as the country enters a new era, with Kim Jong Un installed as Supreme Commander of the 1.2 million-strong military and ruling party leader following his father's Dec. 17 death.This year is a crucial one in North Korea's history as it tries to build a great, prosperous and powerful nation befitting the April 2012 centenary of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the new leader's grandfather.Glorify this year 2012 as a year of proud victory, a year when an era of prosperity is unfolding,the North said.The whole party, the entire army and all the people should possess a firm conviction that they will become human bulwarks and human shields in defending Kim Jong Un unto death.

North Korea said it would boost its military, and boasted that it was at the epochal point of opening the gates of a thriving country,with parts of Pyongyang turned into socialist fairylands.Still, the message acknowledged the country's food crisis, saying the food problem is a burning issue. Pyongyang had been in talks with the United States on food aid, but they stopped because of Kim Jong Il's death.The United Nations has said a quarter of North Korea's 24 million people need outside food aid and that malnutrition is surging, especially among children.The North's message said organic farming methods should be used and that farming machinery and materials should be provided, but it did not go into specifics for improving food supplies.The message, carried in a joint editorial in the Rodong Sinmun, Joson Inmingun and Chongnyon Jonwi newspapers, said North Korea must build on the foundations laid last year and turn itself into an economic giant.The power and coal industries also will be a focus and the North Korean capital Pyongyang will be turned into a world class city, it said. The message said information technology and bioengineering would help drive the economy, but gave no details.This year's message shows North Korea will focus on the economy and ideological solidarity to establish stability for Kim Jong Un's leadership, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.The message didn't include the country's typical criticism of the U.S. and avoided mentioning its nuclear ambitions, and that suggested Pyongyang is willing to continue talks with Washington to win aid, Yoo said.

North Korea's traditional New Year's Day message is always closely watched for clues to the government's plans. It takes on added significance this year, coming just two weeks after the death of longtime leader Kim Jong Il.North Korea in recent days has cemented Kim Jong Un's position as leader, and on Saturday officially named him Supreme Commander over the military.The entire army should place absolute trust in and follow Kim Jong Un,the New Year's message said.The North linked Kim Jong Un to the songun, or military-first, policy of Kim Jong Il, and called him the eternal center of the country's unity. Iran fires radar-beating missile during Gulf drill

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran test-fired a new medium-range missile, designed to evade radars, on Sunday during the last days of its naval drill in the Gulf, the official IRNA news agency quoted a military official as saying.The 10-day naval exercise coincided with increased tension in Iran's nuclear row with Western powers, after the European Union said it was considering a ban - already in place in the United States - on imports of Iranian oil.The mid-range surface to air missile which is equipped with the latest sophisticated anti-radar technologies has been successfully test-fired, Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi told IRNA.Iran delayed testing its long-range missiles during the drill, saying the weapons would be launched in the next few days.The United States and Israel say they have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve a dispute over the country's nuclear program, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West says is a cover to build bomb.Iran has long-range missile systems including the Shahab-3, which could reach Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East.

In the past week Iran has threatened to stop ships moving through the strategic Strait of Hormuz if sanctions are imposed on its oil exports.The threat has heightened tension between Iran and the West. TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 earthquake hit off the shores of Japan's southern Pacific island.The Meteorological Agency says the offshore quake Sunday struck about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea surface. The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.Northeastern Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire,is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

McDONALD, Ohio (AP) — Officials said Saturday they believe the latest earthquake activity in northeast Ohio is related to the injection of wastewater into the ground near a fault line, creating enough pressure to cause seismic activity.The brine wastewater comes from drilling operations that use the so-called fracking process to extract gas from underground shale. But Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Jim Zehringer said during a news teleconference that fracking is not causing the quakes.The seismic events are not a direct result of fracking, he said.

Environmentalists and property owners who live near gas drilling wells have questioned the safety of fracking to the environment and public health. Federal regulators have declared the technology safe, however.Zehringer said four injection wells within a 5-mile (8-kilometer) radius of an already shuttered well in Youngstown will remain inactive while further scientific research is conducted.A 4.0 magnitude quake Saturday afternoon in McDonald, outside of Youngstown, was the 11th in a series of minor earthquakes in area, many of which have struck near the Youngstown injection well. The quake caused no serious injuries or property damage, Zehringer said.Thousands of gallons of brine were injected into the well daily until its owner, Northstar Disposal Services LLC, agreed Friday to stop injecting brine into the earth as a precaution while authorities assess any potential links to the quakes.Michael Hansen of the Ohio Seismic Network said Saturday that more quakes are possible, most likely small ones, until the pressure at the fault line has been completely relieved.The temblor Saturday appeared to be stronger than others, which generally had a magnitude of 2.7 or lower. A seven-year-old Indian girl was murdered in a tribal sacrifice and her liver offered to the gods to improve crop growth, police in the central state of Chhattisgarh said on Sunday.The body of Lalita Tati was found in October one week after her family reported her missing.A seven-year-old girl was sacrificed by two persons superstitiously believing that the act would give a better harvest, Narayan Das, the police chief of Bijapur district, told AFP by telephone.The two men was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of killing the girl and offering her liver to the gods in a grisly tribal ceremony. Police said the men had confessed to the crime.

The girl was murdered in a jungle district of Chhattisgarh that is a stronghold of rebel Maoists who have tapped into disaffection among local tribal groups.Human sacrifices occasionally make headlines in deeply religious and superstitious India, and usually occur in poor areas where some people revere practitioners of black magic.Two suspected child sacrifices were reported in Chhattisgarh in 2010, while in the same year the decapitated body of a factory worker was found in a temple in the eastern state of West Bengal.The victims are often ritually killed by witchdoctors to appease gods, spirits or deities.
