Israel Defends against Missiles with SMS-Israel is nearing a country-wide SMS messaging system that warns citizens of incoming missiles – in case they are not intercepted.By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 1/2/2012, 9:09 AM

Israel will soon deploy a country-wide SMS messaging system that warns citizens of incoming missiles – in case they are not intercepted. The Home Front Command conducted tests on Sunday of a text message system that will warn residents in real time, according to location, of incoming missiles and rockets.Sunday's test was conducted in the central part of the country in four languages – Hebrew, Arabic, English and Russian. The system was first tested during the Turning Point 5 civil defense drill, earlier this year, when which alerts were sent to residents of a number of localities in Israel. The Turning Point 5 drill last June involved 250 soldiers participating in a test run in the Gaza Belt area. The test was interrupted because Partner Communications, which operates the Orange cell phone system, complained that the exercise’s alert system did not work on its Samsung C5130 phones.

The SMS system gives an early warning to residents in emergencies, including those other than incoming missiles. The new but expensive Iron Dome system also is being expanded to defend citizens against incoming missiles. It has had a high success rate, but its drawbacks are that every city needs its own system, which is very expensive. Each missile costs approximately $100,000, while a Kassam short-range rocket costs terrorists less than $800 to assemble.Hamas terrorists began producing Kassam missiles after the start of the Second Intifada, also known as the Oslo War, 11 years ago.The first rocket it fired had a range of only two miles, but the missiles' range has been improved, and they can now reach urban centers such as Ashkelon. The only previous warning system that the IDF has developed is the Code Red system, a siren that is sounded after a Kassam launch is detected, giving residents of areas close to Gaza only 15 seconds to run for cover.

JERUSALEM DIVIDED

ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.

JOEL 3:2
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

ZECHARIAH 14:1-9 King James Bible
1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:
7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.
8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

WELL ABBAS WILL GET HIS WISH.JERUSALEM WILL BE DIVIDED LIKE THE BIBLE SAYS BUT IT WILL SET OFF WW3 AND THE DEATH OF 4 BILLION OF PEOPLE ON EARTH.THE ARAB-MUSLIMS WILL GET THEIR WISH.BUT THE CONCEQUENCES OF THE WISHES WILL RESULT IN NOT ONLY 750 MILLION MUSLIMS DYING BUT A TOTAL OF 4 BILLION PEOPLE ON EARTH DYING IN WW3.THE WORLD THINKS THEY CAN FORCE ISRAEL TO GET RID OF JERUSALEM BUT JESUS AND WW3 WILL TELL A DIFFERENT STORY.ISRAEL WILL BE IN CONTROL OF JERUSALEM FOREVER AND IN FACT JERUSALEM BECOMES NOT ONLY THE CAPITAL OF ISRAEL BUT JERUSALEM BECOMES THE WORLD CAPITAL.SO GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WISHES ABBAS.

Abbas: All Options on Table If Israel Does not Concede-Abbas delivers a cryptic message on the eve of PA-Israeli talks in Jordan. All options are on the table, but no renewal of the Intifada.By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 1/2/2012, 1:56 PM

Abbas delivered a cryptic and contradictory message on the eve of Palestinian Authority-Israeli talks in Jordan. He said that all options are on the table but said that he opposes a renewal of the Intifada.Jordan is to host the talks on Tuesday, three weeks before the January 26 deadline that the Quartet has set for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to resume direct negotiations on security measures and the establishment of a new Arab state within Israel’s borders. The official PA website WAFA stated that Abbas warned, From now until January 26, if the Quartet is unable to bring the two parties to the negotiating table on clear bases, then it has failed… If nothing happens by the 26th, we have options. There are people who say a third intifada and I say this is not going to happen. I do not accept that. However, PA security forces have not acted against daily attacks on Jewish motorists on the highways in Judea and Samaria, where rock-throwing terrorists, often armed with Molotov cocktails, try to cause fatal accidents to kill drivers and passengers. One father and his infant son were murdered several weeks ago in a rock-throwing attack on the main highway between Kiryat Arab-Hevron and Jerusalem.

The PA has pointed out that Tuesday’s talks are not negotiations, but they satisfy the Quartet's demands for a peace process, which has been declared dead and buried by virtually all observers and even leading politicians in Israel and the PA. The Quartet is made up of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia. The planned discussions in Jordan give Abbas one important strategic advantage: The PA publicly has said it expects no results from the discussions, and their failure will give him a platform for a renewed diplomatic war against Israel.
Abbas continues to hold out the threat of going back to the United Nations for recognition based on its own unilateral demands, backed by most countries in the pro-Arab general Assembly. An attempt three months ago for recognition was thwarted when Abbas was unable to gain the necessary two-thirds majority of United Nations Security Council members to approve the motion and bring it to the General Assembly. President Barack Obama has vowed he will veto any such motion if Abbas does win the necessary backing.Abbas has his eye on this year’s presidential elections in the United States. We call on the US not to waste 2012 on elections, he said.I wonder how a superpower could stop functioning for an entire year because of elections. There are serious international issues such as the Middle East conflict. The US should not say it will not open the Palestinian-Israeli conflict until the elections are over.He added, If there is no peace, the entire world will bear the consequences of the failure of the peace process, which he has based on Israel’s giving up all of the land in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria that was restored in the Six-Day War in 1967.Abbas also has balked at Israeli demands for security arrangements, including the deployment of the IDF in the Jordan Valley, to prevent return to what Israel calls indefensible borders. Abba Eban, former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, referred to them as Auschwitz borders.

Denmark to battle for European unity
30.12.11 @ 09:36 By Honor Mahony

BRUSSELS - Denmark takes over the six-month EU rotating presidency on Sunday (1 January), kicking off what is expected to be another traumatic year for the eurozone and its single currency.Like all presidency countries, Denmark has a specific to-do list, but the eurozone crisis means that its most pressing task will be political in nature: ensuring that euro and non-euro states do not drift apart. Not being a member of the single currency means that politically it is already on the back-foot however.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, one of the few centre-left politicians in the European Union, had a taste of what this means during her first EU summit in December. When she spoke out about the importance of keeping the EU 27 together, French President Nicolas Sarkozy rejected the overture: You're an out, a small out, and you're new. We don't want to hear from you,he said, according to an account in the Financial Times. While Sarkozy's outburst came during the summit, the actual results of the summit make Thorning-Schmidt's EU cohesion task yet more difficult.

By the end of the long and fractious evening, the 17 eurozone countries said they would forge ahead with an intergovernmental pact on tightening fiscal discipline. Nine non-euro countries - including Denmark - pledged to eventually sign up to it, while the UK is not taking part at all.The coming weeks will be dominated by efforts to nail down the details of the pact. But this presents its own set of problems for Copenhagen, which is keen to make sure its contents will not trigger a referendum.
Internal Danish politics means that this will be a difficult tightrope for Thorning-Schmidt, whose coalition government is propped up by a eurosceptic left-wing party that is against the pact and is calling for a referendum on the issue.Like Poland - a non-euro member whose presidency finishes at the end of 2011 - Denmark is expected to spend much of its time trying to keep minds focussed on everyday policies even as the eurozone crisis continues to push member states into yet more emergency summits, meetings and decisions. One big issue that requires member states' attention but where Copenhagen may struggle to make itself heard above the efforts to deal with the eurozone crisis will be the EU's next long-term budget (2014-2020).EU budget talks are traditionally ill-tempered affairs. But the tough economic climate promises to make the talks more difficult than usual.Denmark will be in charge as fresh new legislation on economic governance begins to be felt. The six new laws, massively increasing Brussels' oversight of national budgets and committing member states to a new European Semester, came into force mid December. The March summit will be the first test of the new system, with member states supposed to agree European Commission recommendations on their budget spending policies.

Another event that Denmark will have to factor into the running of its presidency is the French presidential elections in April.Past experience shows that when large EU countries are facing elections, domestically awkward topics are pushed off the EU table while spurious topics - which may help the incumbent - find their way on to it.

Monti calls for boost to eurozone bail-out firepower
30.12.11 @ 09:24 By Leigh Phillips

BRUSSELS - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has called for a boost to the size of the eurozone bail-out fund following a mixed response to a series of bond auctions by Rome. The technocratic leader that replaced Silvio Berlusconi last month told reporters on Thursday that the war-chest of the European Financial Stability Facility need to be significantly greater than at present. He said that for peripheral eurozone states to enjoy more successful bond sales, most of the work needs to be done in Europe. He also underlined the need for a united, joint and convincing response. We believe budget discipline is essential and any mechanism that can make this discipline secure and credible is fine, as long as there is a European economic policy,he said, that also promotes growth.Monti said that he will argue at the EU level for an increase to the size of the bail-out’s firepower, although he did not offer any concrete figures. He also would not comment on the role of the ECB in the crisis, stressing his support for the central bank’s independence.Monti’s comments came after the Italian treasury raise some €7 billion in bond sales, some way off the €8.5 billion sought from the markets. However, the auction achieved rates considerably lower than those borne by the country’s last significant bond sale, with 10-year bonds priced at 6.98 percent yields, down from 7.56 percent in November.

Three-year bonds also saw rates drop to 5.62 percent, down from 7.89 percent.
Borrowing costs for the government declined sharply on Wednesday as well, with the rates on six-month bonds falling to 3.25 percent from 6.5 percent from the same bonds offered in November, with the government raising €9 billion on the sale.
Nevertheless, analysts pointed out that investors likely snapped up the bonds off the back of a flood of low-cost lending from the European Central Bank last week. The ECB offered some €490 billion in three-year loans last week enjoying rates of one percent.Auctions held yesterday and today went rather well, but financial turbulence absolutely is not over, said a cautious Monti on Thursday. The prime minister went on to outline further details of a programme, dubbed Grow Italy of cuts, tax hikes and structural adjustment.Monti announced a €30 billion austerity package earlier this month, and on Thursday said that key moves will be unveiled in January ahead of an EU summit. The technocratic government will focus at first on a liberalisation of the service sector and labour legislation.

Mideast talks positive, says Israeli minister
AFPAFP – JAN 2,12

A top Israeli cabinet minister on Monday said that a planned meeting with Palestinian negotiators after a near 16-month pause was a positive step but should not be seen as renewal of negotiations. This is a positive development, Intelligence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor told Israeli public radio. It is the first time in a long while that the Palestinians have been prepared to come and talk to us directly, without preconditions.Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh will on Tuesday host Israel's chief negotiator Yitzhak Molcho and his Palestinian counterpart Saeb Erakat for talks which will also be attended by representatives of the international Quartet of peacemakers.Meridor said the meeting, which is to take place in Amman, did not in itself constitute a return to direct talks but expressed hope it would be a springboard which would allow the Palestinians to return to negotiations. We were not asked to make declarations at the preliminary talks, he said, indicating that only in the context of actual negotiations would Israel lay out its positions. The Palestinians also stressed the same point. This meeting will be devoted to discussing the possibility of making a breakthrough that could lead to the resumption of negotiations,Erakat told Voice of Palestine radio.

Therefore, it will not mark the resumption of negotiations, he said, reiterating the Palestinian mantra that there would be no talks without a halt to settlement activity.Direct talks ground to a halt in September 2010, when an Israeli freeze on new West Bank construction expired and Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu declined to renew it.Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has said he will not hold talks without a new settlement freeze and an agreement on a clear framework for talks based on the 1967 lines.News that the sides would be meeting for the first time in more than a year sparked an angry reaction from Gaza's Hamas rulers, who are trying to push through a reconciliation deal with Abbas's Fatah movement. We demand a boycott of this meeting, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP. Going to such a meeting is only betting on failure. And the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) also denounced the move as a fatal error which would force the Palestinians back into another pointless waiting game. The occupation and the Quartet are the only beneficiaries from the Amman meeting that is, in fact, a negotiations meeting that drains the Palestinian national account, the group said in a statement.Israel's Meridor said the push to get the sides talking after a hiatus of nearly 16 months had come from Jordan in what he described as a positive change. It wasn't involved until now and this is its initiative. It is a change and a positive change,he said.

Jordan is a neighbour and we have important relations with it and I think that its involvement in any solution to the Palestinian problem is critical,he added.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has said he will not hold talks without a freeze on settlement construction and agreement on a clear framework for talks based on the 1967 lines.

Israeli, Palestinian negotiators to meet in Jordan
Associated PressBy JAMAL HALABY and JOSEF FEDERMAN | AP – JAN 2,11

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel and the Palestinians said Sunday that their chief peace negotiators would attend a gathering of international diplomats in neighboring Jordan this week, bringing the sides together for the first time in more than a year.
Officials stressed that the meeting would not be a formal negotiating session. Nonetheless, it could mark an important step toward restarting peace talks, which broke down in September 2010.The upcoming meeting is part of serious and continuous efforts to reach a common ground to resume the direct negotiations, said Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Kayed. He said Jordan's foreign minister, Nasser Judeh, would host the meeting of Israeli and Palestinian representatives with teams from the international Quartet of Mideast mediators. The Quartet, consisting of the U.S., European Union, Russia and the United Nations, has repeatedly tried to restart negotiations with the goal of forging a final peace agreement this year.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton welcomed the move. We are hopeful that this direct exchange can help move us forward on the pathway proposed by the Quartet, she said in a statement. The status quo is not sustainable and the parties must act boldly to advance the cause of peace.Judeh is expected to hold a separate meeting with the Israelis and Palestinians, Kayed said.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said his chief envoy, Yitzhak Molcho, would attend the meeting, while the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said he would go.The meeting comes about six weeks after Jordanian King Abdullah II made a rare visit to the West Bank for talks with the Palestinians. Abdullah, who often serves as a mediator, hosted Israeli President Shimon Peres the following week.
Peace efforts have been largely frozen since December 2008. Israel and the Palestinians briefly resumed negotiations in September 2010 only to see them break down after several weeks when an Israeli moratorium on settlement construction expired. The Palestinians have said they will not resume peace talks unless Israel freezes settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem — captured territories that they claim for their independent state. With some 500,000 Israelis now living in these areas, the Palestinians say continued settlement construction is a sign of bad faith. Israel says talks should resume without preconditions. The Quartet has urged Israel and the Palestinians to submit proposals for security arrangements and final borders between Israel and a future Palestinian state. The Palestinians have already submitted proposals. Israel says it will only do so if negotiations resume.

The Palestinians say Israel should commit to withdrawing to its lines before the 1967 Mideast war — when it captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem — as the basis of a final border. In the West Bank city of Ramallah, Erekat urged Israel to use this opportunity to stop all settlement construction and accept the two state solution on the 1967 borders.Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls to return to the 1967 lines.
His office said Molcho would head to Amman to participate in the Quartet meeting. It gave no further details.Halaby reported from Amman, Jordan. Mohammed Daraghmeh in Ramallah, West Bank, contributed to this report.

Gaza's Hamas premier visits flotilla ship
Associated PressAP – JAN 2,12

ISTANBUL (AP) — The Hamas premier of the Gaza Strip has visited a ship docked in Turkey that in 2010 was the target of a deadly raid by Israeli troops seeking to prevent an aid flotilla reaching the Palestinian territory. The visit Monday by Ismail Haniyeh was a show of solidarity with the Islamic aid group IHH, which had planned to send the Mavi Marmara vessel with another Gaza flotilla last year but then dropped the plan.On the Istanbul dock, Haniyeh denounced the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Israel has lifted restrictions on consumer goods, though it kept a ban on materials like cement and metals that it says could be used by Hamas to build fortifications or aid attacks on Israel.Haniyeh is on a tour of the Muslim world, his first trip outside the blockaded territory since Hamas took over Gaza in 2007.

Activists: Syrian forces fire on protesters
Associated PressBy ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY | AP – JAN 2,12

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say Syrian security forces have fired on protesters calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad in restive Hama province. The Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella group of Syrian activists, said troops forcibly dispersed the protest Monday. There was no immediate word on casualties. The Assad regime's crackdown on a 9-month-old uprising has persisted despite the presence of nearly 100 Arab League monitors inside the country. On Sunday, a pan-Arab body called for the immediate withdrawal of the monitors because the regime has kept up killings of government opponents even with the observers there.

Iran's navy tests cruise missile as part of drill
Associated PressBy NASSER KARIMI | AP – JAN 2,11

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran test-fired a surface-to-surface cruise missile on Monday during a drill that the country's navy chief said proved Tehran was in complete control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply. The missile, called Ghader, or Capable in Farsi, was described as an upgraded version of a missile that has been in service before. The official IRNA news agency said the missile successfully hit its intended target during the exercise. No other details were released about Ghader. An earlier version of the same cruise missile had a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers) and could travel at low altitudes. There were suggestions it could counter the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf.Iran's 10-day navy drill, which ends Tuesday, was Tehran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its nuclear program. The exercise came amid conflicting comments from Iranian officials over Tehran's intentions to close the Strait of Hormuz, and U.S. warnings against such an ominous move.

The Strait of Hormuz is completely under our control,Iran's navy chief Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said after Monday's test. We do not allow any enemy to pose threats to our interests. The latest version of the Ghader was delivered in September to the naval division of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, which is assigned to protect Iranian sea borders. At the time, Tehran said the missile is capable of destroying warships. In comparison with the previous version, the highly advanced Ghader missile system has been upgraded in terms of its radar, satellite communications, precision in target destruction, as well as range and radar-evading mechanism, said Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, a spokesman for the drill.State TV showed footage Monday depicting the launch of two missiles, which were fired into the sky and which the TV said could hit targets hundreds of kilometers (miles) away from the point of origin. The broadcast said two more missiles, with a shorter range, were also tested Monday. We conducted the drill ... to let everybody know that Iran's defense and deterrence powers on the open seas and the Strait of Hormuz are aimed at defending our borders, resources and our nation, said Sayyari, the navy chief. The testing comes a day after Iran test-fired an advanced surface-to-air missile called Mehrab, or Altar in Farsi, which was described as medium-range.Iran had said the sea maneuvers would cover a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of water beyond the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, as well as parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.

A leading Iranian lawmaker said Sunday the maneuvers served as practice for closing the Strait of Hormuz if the West blocks Iran's oil sales. After top Iranian officials made the same threat a week ago, military commanders emphasized that Iran has no intention of blocking the waterway now.Mousavi on Sunday also emphasized that Iran has no plan to choke the strait. We won't disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not after this, the semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.
Mousavi said the drill was tactical and meant to show Iran was capable of assuming full control over the strait in case this became necessary. The West fears Iran's program aims to develop atomic weapons — a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's for peaceful purposes only.

Iran says it's produced first nuclear fuel rod
Associated PressBy ALI AKBAR DAREINI | AP – Sun, Jan 1, 2012

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian scientists have produced the nation's first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West has doubted Tehran capable of, the country's nuclear agency said Sunday.

The announcement marks another step in Tehran's efforts to achieve proficiency in the entire nuclear fuel cycle — from exploring uranium ore to producing nuclear fuel — despite U.N. sanctions and measures by the U.S. and others to get it to halt aspects of its atomic work that could provide a possible pathway to weapons production.Tehran has long said it is forced to seek a way to manufacture the fuel rods on its own, since the sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets. Nuclear fuel rods are tubes containing pellets of enriched uranium that provide fuel for nuclear reactors.Iran's atomic energy agency's website said the first domestically made rod has already been inserted into the core of Tehran's research nuclear reactor. But it was unclear if the rod contained pellets or was inserted empty, as part of a test.Scientists and researchers at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have succeeded in producing and testing the first sample of a nuclear fuel rod, said the announcement. The U.S. and some of its European allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover to develop atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge, saying the program is for peaceful purposes only and is geared toward generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Although the rods are easier to make, Iran is also seeking to produce the pellets with enriched uranium. But so far it is not known whether Iranian nuclear scientists have been able to overcome the technical hurdles to do so.Tehran focused on domestic production of nuclear fuel rods and pellets in 2010, after talks with the West on a nuclear fuel swap deal ended in failure as Iran backed down on shipping a major part of its stock of enriched uranium abroad in return for fuel. The announcement on the fuel rod came just a day after Tehran proposed a new round of talks on its nuclear program with six world powers. The last round of negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany was held in January in Istanbul, Turkey, but it ended in failure. The U.N. has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Tehran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process that can lead to making a nuclear weapon. Separately, the U.S. and the European Union have imposed their own tough economic and financial penalties.

Arab League chief calls for cease-fire in Syria
AP – JAN 2,12

CAIRO (AP) — The Arab League chief says Syrian forces continue to shoot protesters despite the presence of monitors from the organization and calls for a complete cease-fire.Nabil Elaraby, addressing a news conference on Monday, also called on the opposition and ordinary Syrians to aid the observers by sending them names of relatives or friends they think are detained. At least 150 people have been killed since the observers began their mission last Tuesday to verify the compliance of President Bashar Assad's regime with an Arab League peace plan aimed at ending the regime's 9-month-old crackdown on anti-government protesters. Assad agreed to the plan on Dec. 19.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say Syrian security forces have fired on protesters calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad in restive Hama province.

Winds, winter storms snarl some holiday travel
ReutersBy Keith Coffman | Reuters – Sat, Dec 31, 2011

DENVER (Reuters) - High winds and snow slowed travelers in Colorado and Nebraska ahead of the new year, as many Americans hit the roads over the holiday weekend, officials said on Saturday. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for eastern Colorado, parts of Nebraska, Wyoming and the Dakotas. The warning was in effect until sundown on Saturday when the winds were expected to die down. The weather service also issued a winter storm warning for a band stretching from northwest Iowa, across a swath of Minnesota that includes the Twin Cities and through west central Wisconsin into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In Minnesota, afternoon rain was expected to turn to snow, with totals of 1 to 4 inches forecast in most areas accompanied by winds of 30- to 35-miles per hour on Saturday evening with gusts of 50 mph possible, the weather service said.

The combination of accumulating snow, strong winds and falling temperatures will make travel difficult on area roadways, particularly during the late evening into the overnight hours, the Twin Cities weather service office said.In Iowa, where Republicans gather on Tuesday for caucuses marking the first big step in the U.S. presidential race, strong winds of 30 to 40 mph were expected Saturday night and through New Year's Day.On the high plains of Colorado, Interstate 76 from east of Denver to the Nebraska state line was closed to all high-profile vehicles, including trailers and sports utility vehicles, the state Department of Transportation said.

There was nearly zero visibility on Interstate 80 in southern Nebraska due to wind and blowing snow, the Nebraska State Patrol said.Blowing and drifting snow in the mountains and swirling dust on the eastern plains of Colorado will make traveling difficult for motorists, said Jim Kalina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, Colorado. The buffeting winds have also hurt the state's lucrative ski industry over the busy holiday weekend. All lifts at the Breckenridge Ski Resort west of Denver were closed on Saturday morning.Until high winds abate, most of the mountain remains on a delayed opening, the resort said on its website. In the town of Breckenridge, about 5,000 customers were without power due to gusts that brought down power lines, Xcel Energy spokeswoman Michelle Aguayo said.At the Winter Park ski resort west of Denver, lifts were operating on the lower part of the mountain, but not at elevations of 10,000 feet and above, said Mistalynn Lee, spokeswoman for the resort.Safety is always first, but we have high hopes the winds will die down and we can open all the lifts,Lee said. The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the 11,000-foot Loveland Pass traversed by U.S. Route 6 on Saturday due to blowing and drifting snow, the agency's website said.(Additional reporting by David Hendee and David Bailey; Editing by Alex Dobuzinskis and Cynthia Johnston)

Dead blackbirds fall again in Arkansas town
Associated PressBy JEANNIE NUSS | AP – Sun, Jan 1, 2012

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Thousands of dead blackbirds rained down on a town in central Arkansas last New Year's Eve after revelers set off fireworks that spooked them from their roost, and officials were reporting a similar occurrence Saturday as 2012 approached.Police in Beebe said dozens of blackbirds had fallen dead, prompting officers to ban residents from shooting fireworks Saturday night. It wasn't immediately clear if fireworks were again to blame, but authorities weren't taking a chance.Officer John Weeks said the first reports of birds on the streets came around 7 p.m. as residents celebrated the year's end with fireworks in their neighborhoods.

We started shutting down fireworks,he said. We're working on cleaning up the birds now.He said police were working with animal control workers and others to remove the birds and determine a death count. We're not sure if they're going to continue to fall throughout the night. I can't tell you, Weeks said.Scientists say the loud cracks and booms from celebratory fireworks likely sent the birds into such a tizzy that they crashed into homes, cars and each other before plummeting to their deaths last New Year's Eve. The birds landed on roofs, sidewalks, streets and fields. One struck a woman walking her dog. Another hit a police cruiser. The blackbird die-off, coupled with tens of thousands of dead drum fish that washed up on the shores of the Arkansas River, flung the state into the national headlines and drew conspiracy theorists and filmmakers to the town about 30 miles northeast of Little Rock that shares Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe's last name. Some people speculated that the birds had been poisoned; others said their deaths marked the beginning of the apocalypse.

It's just got to be a pain in my career, Beebe Police Chief Wayne Ballew said.Prior to this New Year's Eve, Ballew said he wouldn't be surprised if people sit out on their front porches in case the winged creatures fall from the sky again.I guess we could have an annual blackbird watch,he said with a laugh.People can just bring their umbrellas, open them up and walk through the neighborhood and hope they don't get hit.Charles Moore didn't plan to have an umbrella at the ready, but said he would have his camera out on New Year's Eve. Last year, he drifted off to sleep before the ball — and birds — dropped. When we got up on New Year's Day and walked out to get the paper, we saw all the carnage out there,he said.So we thought we would be on the watch for it this time.

Ohio suspends well operations after series of small quakes ReutersBy Kim Palmer | Reuters – JAN 2,12

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Ohio has suspended operations at five deep-well hazardous fluid disposal sites after a series of 11 earthquakes in Youngstown last year including one on Saturday with a magnitude of 4.0, officials said on Sunday. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said it was halting operations at five Mahoning County wells owned by Northstar Disposal Services LLC as a precaution, citing concerns of a possible link between well activity and the quakes. We are being overly cautious in order to ensure public safety in asking the company to halt disposal injections at one site on Friday and then asking for a halt to any injections in a five-mile radius Saturday,Ohio Department of Natural Resources deputy director Andy Ware told Reuters. Our geologist would say there is a strong chance there is a fault line very close to the site of the well,Ware said, adding the department was concerned that pressure from the fluid disposal could be affecting a previously unknown fault line.

Earthquakes induced by human activity have been documented in a few locations in the United States, Japan and Canada, according to the U.S. Geological Survey web site. The largest and best known resulted from fluid injection at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal near Denver, Colorado, where in 1967 a 5.5 magnitude earthquake followed a series of smaller quakes.Ware said Northstar won the right to drill in the area in March 2010 and began drilling in mid-summer. The injection disposal started in December 2010 and the first earthquake occurred in 2011. A representative for Northstar could not be reached for comment on Sunday.Ohio Governor John Kasich felt the move was important to quickly ensure the safety of the public, spokesman Robert Nichols said.We fully expect to be criticized for overreacting on this, but we are okay with that,Nichols said.

Earthquakes are not common in Youngstown, and seismic records going back to 1980 show no reports of earthquakes prior to the series of quakes last year. A 2.1 magnitude quake, the first of 11 in 2011, was reported on March 17. More were reported in August, September, October, November and December.Ware said that after a 2.7 magnitude quake was reported on December 24, Northstar Disposal Services voluntarily lowered the pressure at one well, known as Northstar No. 1.At 3:05 p.m. on New Year's Eve, a 4.0 earthquake was reported, causing the Ohio Department of Resources to recommend all wells in the area stop operations,Ware said. After the initial spate of earthquakes in the area, four more monitors were set up in the proximity of the first well to get more data on the source of the seismic activity.

There are 177 disposal wells currently in operation in Ohio. The Mahoning County well is 9,000 feet deep and is used to dispose hazardous fluids, injecting fluid that cannot be disposed of in landfills into sandstone well below groundwater level.
An internal briefing was scheduled for later on Sunday, and Ware could not say when or if the wells would resume operations. Authorities said there may be a change in how the wells operate. That is one of the things that would be discussed, possibly plugging the well to a certain level.Ware said. We will continue to monitor and have our geologists monitor the data.(Writing and reporting by Kim Palmer; Editing by Mary Wisniewski and Cynthia Johnston)

LA firefighters on New Year's alert amid arson attacks ReutersBy Alex Dobuzinskis | Reuters – Sat, Dec 31, 2011

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Firefighters in Los Angeles were steeling themselves for a busy New Year's eve on Saturday, following a rash of arson fires that saw more than 30 cars torched in recent days.Authorities are on the lookout for at least one suspect amid fears more blazes could result in serious injury. Our crews have been told they are going to be busy tonight, no question about it,said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. We are going into what we call augmented dispatch, where we send extra crews to every call,he said. Those preparations were put into practice early on Saturday evening, when firefighters responded to a vehicle in flames in a carport in Hollywood. The blaze was quickly confined to the car and no injuries were reported, Humphrey said. The cause of this latest car fire and whether it was due to arson was still under investigation. So far, no residents have been wounded from the spate of arson attacks, but one firefighter was treated and released for injuries suffered at the site of one blaze, authorities said.

At some locations, fires have spread from torched cars to carports and homes. One of the blazes damaged a house in the Hollywood Hills, where The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison was inspired to write the 1968 song Love Street about his girlfriend Pam Courson and what was then a hippie hangout.Los Angeles police have stepped up patrols and the city fire department planned to maintain a command post for the New Year's weekend in an area where many of the blazes have occurred.Arson investigators have been called in to review video footage, map where and when the fires were set, and interview witnesses.Investigators were trying to determine if the string of fires was set by one person or more than one person, said Officer Norma Eisenman, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman.Police also said they were looking for a man driving a 1990s Lexus ES300.At least 11 vehicles were burned on Saturday in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Los Angeles, police said. The city fire department reported vehicle or structure fires at other locations. The early Saturday fires followed on 21 intentionally set fires involving vehicles or car ports in the Hollywood area late on Thursday and early Friday morning, according to the fire department. With blazes having spread to structures, the fire department provided a conservative estimate of $350,000 in property damage for arson attacks on Thursday and Friday alone.

Authorities were offering rewards totaling $60,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist, the fire department said.We are dead serious about trying to apprehend the individual or individuals who are responsible for this,Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told reporters on Friday. We want to get these S-O-B's before they hurt somebody.Aside from bracing for possible arson attacks, Humphrey said firefighters would also have to deal with more common occurrences on a holiday, such as early morning car crashes. No suspects were in custody on Saturday, Eisenman said. Police released people who had been detained in the investigation after determining they had no connection to the fires, she said.
Investigators were going over numerous tips from residents and surveillance recordings from area apartment buildings, Eisenman said. The investigation includes the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles County Fire Department and Beverly Hills Fire Department.(Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by David Bailey)

Myth busted: Yes, the NDAA does apply to Americans, and here’s the text that says so Mike Adams Natural News Monday, January 2, 2012

In the aftermath of the signing of the NDAA by the traitorous President Obama, some citizens remain completely hoodwinked by the language of the bill, running around the internet screaming that the law does not apply to American citizens. This is, naturally, part of the side effect of having such a dumbed-down education system where people can’t even parse the English language anymore. If you read the bill and understand what it says, it clearly offers absolutely no protections of U.S. citizens. In fact, it affirms that Americans are subjected to indefinite detainment under existing authorities.Let’s parse it intelligently, shall we? First off, the offending section of the bill that used to be called 1031 was moved to 1021. Here is the title:(http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-…)

SEC. 1021. AFFIRMATION OF AUTHORITY OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES TO DETAIN COVERED PERSONS PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE.
The two relevant sections to consider are titled and stated as follows;(d) CONSTRUCTION. — Nothing in this section is intended to limit or expand the authority of the President or the scope of the Authorization for Use of Military Force.By PARSING the language here, we must split it into two sentences based on the or operator. This statement essentially means:
• Nothing in this section is intended to LIMIT the authority of the President or the scope of the Authorization for Use of Military Force.
• Nothing in this section is intended to EXPAND the authority of the President or the scope of the Authorization for Use of Military Force.

In other words, this section places no limits whatsoever of the authority of the President to use military force (against American citizens). Keep that in mind as you read the next section:(e) AUTHORITIES. — Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing law or authorities relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States. This section e is the section that the hoodwinked people on the internet are running around saying protects American citizens from the NDAA. But where do they dream up such language? If you read section (e) again, you’ll discover it says nothing whatsoever about protecting American citizens from the NDAA. Instead, here’s what it really says when parsed into two sentences based on the or operator:
• Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing LAW relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States.
• Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing AUTHORITIES relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States.

In other words, section (e) only says that it does notalter existing authorities relating to the detention of US citizens. So to answer the question about whether this affects U.S. citizens, you have to understand existing authorities. What are those existing authorities?

Existing authorities already allow indefinite detainment and the killing of American citizens

As everyone who studies history well knows, the Patriot Act already establishes an existing authority that anyone suspected of being involved in terrorist-related activities can be arrested and detained without trial. If you don’t believe me, just Google it yourself. This is not a debated issue; it’s widely recognized.Furthermore, President Obama already insists that he has the authority to kill American citizens merely by decree! As Reuters reported on October 5, 2011, a secret panel of government officials (who report to the President) can decide to place an American citizen on a kill list and then murder that person, without trial, without due process, and without even being arrested. (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011…)

Importantly, as Reuters reports, Two principal legal theories were advanced [in support of the kill list authority] — first, that the actions were permitted by Congress when it authorized the use of military forces against militants in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001.Are you getting this yet? So the authority ALREADY exists for the President to order the killing of an American citizen. All that is required is that they besuspectedof being involved in terrorism in any way, and not a shred of evidence is required by the government to support that. There is no trial, no arraignment, no evidence and not even a hearing. You are simply accused and then disappeared. Thus, the authority already exists, you see, and the NDAA openly states that Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing AUTHORITIES…In other words, the NDAA does nothing to protect American citizens, and it piggy-backs on the Patriot Act as well as Obama’s executive kill list. justifications to essentially place all Americans in the crosshairs of government murderers or military action.Rep. Justin Amash, a Congressman from Michigan, explains:The key to subsection 1021(e) is its claim that sec. 1021 does not affect existing law or authorities relating to the detention of persons arrested on U.S. soil. If the President’s expansive view of his own power were in statute, that statement would be true. Instead, the section codifies the President’s view as if it had always existed, authorizing detention of persons regardless of citizenship or where they are arrested. It then disingenuously says the bill doesn’t change that view.(http://www.facebook.com/note.php?no…)

Storing food could get you labeled as a terror suspect

So then, you might be wondering,What kinds of activities could get me accused of being involved in supporting terrorism? And here’s the kicker, because all the following activities could cause you to be arrested, detained, interrogated and even murdered all under U.S. law, thanks to Obama:
• Criticizing the federal government.
• Using cash to purchase things.
• Storing food and medical supplies.
• Owning a firearm and storing ammunition.
• Standing still and minding your own business near a government building.
• Writing something down on a piece of paper near a government building.
• Using a pair of binoculars.
• Protesting for animal rights in front of a medical lab.
• Protesting your government (or Wall Street).
• Requesting to take more than a couple thousand dollars out of your bank account in cash.

You see, under existing authority, you could be labeled a terror suspect for engaging in any of these activities, and then LEGALLY arrested, detained, interrogated or even killed by the U.S. government, all under Obama’s authority (or whatever next President takes over in Washington and perhaps does far worse things with that power…)You are already enemy combatants, folks. The NDAA does absolutely nothing to protect you from its provisions. In fact, it openly states that it does not limit existing authorities — authorities which already claim the right to subject you to indefinite military detention merely for being suspected of involvement with terrorism, which could be interpreted to apply in practically any situation.

Reading between the lines

Get this through your heads, folks: to properly understand the NDAA (or any other bill), you have to learn to think like lawyers and tyrants. They don’t just put language right out in plain view that says, Americans may never be arrested or detained without due process. Instead, they create a web of legalese statements that are cross-referenced, paraphrased and specifically engineered to obfuscate their intended purpose. This isdesignedto hide their true intentions, not to make them clear.Furthermore, if the bill actually intended toprotectAmericans from the NDAA, then it should have contained language saying something like, American citizens are specifically excluded from all the provisions of this bill, in its entirety.I’ll bet anyone a thousand dollars they won’t find language like that in the bill.Because it doesn’t exist! And the reason it doesn’t exist is because the NDAA is clearly intended to apply to American citizens. The writers of the bill have managed to fool a lot of everyday people who seem unable to parse language and read plain English with any depth of understanding. That is as much a failure of America’s public education system as anything else. I find it astonishing that today’s citizenscan’t even read and understand the grammatical structure of sentences written in plain English. This alone is a highly disturbing subject that must be addressed another day. For now, it’s enough just to realize that the NDAA really does apply to you, me, and all our neighbors and friends. In signing it, Obama has cemented his place in history as the enabler of government-sponsored mass murder of its own citizens.

History does repeat itself after all, huh? Hitler, Stalin, Mao and now Obama the enabler. While Obama himself probably won’t engage in the mass murder of American citizens, have no illusions that a future President will try to use the powers enacted by Obama to carry out such crimes. Gingrich, anyone?
