TSA-Style Pat Downs Hit The Streets

In Philadelphia, you don’t have to visit the airport to have the government molest you, TSA-style stop, question and frisk pat downs are already being conducted by police on the streets targeting people who act suspicious, by doing things like putting their hands in their coat pocket.As we have repeatedly warned, everything unfolding in the airports, from naked radiation body scanners to pat downs, is now being implemented on mass transit as well as every major street corner in America. Constitutional protections of privacy and immunity from unreasonable search and seizure have been abolished, replaced with guilty until proven innocent.As Judge Napolitano reports, residents in the city of brotherly love are being patted down by police officers on the streets as part of an aggressive stop, question and frisk policy instituted by Mayor Nutter. The program is now the subject of a class-action lawsuit filed by the ACLU which accuses police of routinely violating civil rights, including those of Rep. Jewell Williams, a former Temple University police officer, who was handcuffed and bundled into a squad car after enquiring about the safety of two elderly men police had detained and then threatened to beat up.

In the video, Philadelphia radio host Dom Giordano attempts to defend the unconstitutional policy by claiming residents were happy with being treated like criminals by specially trained squads who target people for holding their hands in their coat on a street corner.Confronted with the fact that such policies are right out of North Korea or East Germany and have no place in a free country, Giordano invoked the non-existent constitutional right to not have your kid shot, which could also be enforced if authorities simply placed the entire population under house arrest and prevented them from ever going outside.Much to Giordano’s chagrin, Napolitano responded by paraphrasing the most famous Philadelphian of all, founding father Benjamin Franklin, who said, They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.The stops have increased from 102,319 in 2005 to 253,333 in 2009 – an increase of 148 percent – with just 8 per cent of all stops leading to arrests. An alarming one in six residents of the entire city of Philadelphia has been stopped and frisked under the program, far more than would ever be subjected to a TSA groping at an airport.These unconstitutional actions have had and continue to have a devastating effect on the lives of many Philadelphians, attorney Paul Messing said.Beyond that, these police practices have had no real impact on stemming criminal conduct in our city. They just subject innocent people to humiliating and degrading treatment.

Most of those arrests had nothing to do with the reason they were stopped, Messing said. The charges were often for disorderly conduct because they complained they were stopped for no reason.By harassing people for putting their hands in their pockets, US authorities are mimicking the British stop and search policy, which by no coincidence has become notorious for its failure to catch any real criminals.
Indeed, in 2008 our own writer Steve Watson was stopped by goons in yellow jackets who proceeded to bark orders at him while standing at a bus stop in Trafalgar Square, London. His crime? He adjusted his clothing and put his hand in his pocket, an action that put him into the category of a potential terrorist, according to section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.In Britain, stop and search powers have been routinely abused to intimidate political protesters and break up demonstrations. Out of the hundreds of thousands of stop and search incidents, not one has led to the arrest or apprehension of a terrorist, and the powers have recently been ruled illegal by the European Court of Human Rights.Americans who believe they can avoid being molested by the authorities by simply not flying are going to be in for a rude awakening when they find that body scanners and pat downs have become mandatory to enter shopping malls, sports events, or to simply walk down the street.Unless we stand up in unison and revolt against such unconstitutional intrusions no matter where they take place, America will increasingly resemble the former Soviet Union, where agents of the state ceaselessly demand to see our papers and feel us up as part of the process of humiliation that trains the slaves to fawn over and acquiesce to the orders of their masters.

Intelligence Contractor Floats Body Cavity Bomb Propaganda

Get ready for the government to add body cavity searches to its intrusive airport repertoire. The intelligence disinformation operation known as the SITE Intelligence Group has scoured the internet and found jihadis on a forum used by supposed al-Qaeda affiliates discussing Frankenbombers on a forum, according to the New York Daily News.Full body cavity searches are the logical extension of the intrusive pat downs now conducted on grandmothers and nuns.An individual described as a doctor posted his thoughts about a new kind of terrorism – surgically implanted bombs.The scheming comes amid controversy over body scanners and pat-downs in airports that some Americans complain are too invasive. The ideas for a surgically booby-trapped martyrdom seeker were chillingly concise for the doctor of death monitored by SITE, writes James Gordon Meek in a Daily News exclusive.TSA boss John Pistole said last month that his agency would not conduct body cavity searches. He said secondary screening procedures and technology can find fuses and detonators, which must be outside the body.

Lessons of 9/11

While 9/11 served as a wake up call to those awake and aware enough to see the obvious demolitions and misinformation and resultant Pearl Harbor effect, most of the world fell for it. And now people are literally bending over, as in airport screenings, to the onslaught of police state fascism worldwide. It’s staggering. In fact, it’s Orwellian. The armies, police and private sector are at war with the vague concept of terrorism – an unbeatable enemy in a war that can be drawn out indefinitely and fought in any arena necessary.And what was the result of this declared war on terrorism? Not a war on terror, but an increase in fear and terror, all to justify the economic, social and political clampdown that has followed.

What will the Wikileaks debacle herald?

You guessed it–the last bastion of freedom of information and expression, a free Internet, will topple. After all, if information is now the enemy, we must carefully police any and every aspect of this dangerous medium–all for the safety and protection of we the people.Oh, we’ll still have the Internet, just like you can still fly. You’ll just have to be on the approved list, screened, stamped, zapped, mugged and molested if you want to get on the net. No biggie. Thanks Julian–job well done.

Warning Signs

#1. Wikileaks—WAY too approved and publicized. Every TV and cable network, press worldwide, official recognition from every level of government. Heck, he even does a TED talk! Where’s anyone else trying to expose the agenda? Only Julian. Hmmm.

#2. Biggie: This supposed system fighter says the 9/11 truth issue is a distraction. Mustn’t step on your bosses’ toes now, should we Julian.. Very suspicious if you ask me.

#3. Wikileaks and Assange’s sketchy background:

The WikiLeaks website first appeared on the Internet in December 2006.[15][16] The site claims to have been founded by Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians and start-up company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa.[5] The creators of WikiLeaks have not been formally identified.[17] It has been represented in public since January 2007 by Julian Assange and others. Also, Assange reportedly wrote for both the New York Times and the Economist which is fishy as well–not a real enlightened or alternative mindset. His mysterious persona also plays well to the Wikileaks furtive image so people won’t expect to know too much, which also is very convenient for keeping anything hidden.

[NOTE: There doesn't have to be deliberate, conscious involvement in some agenda on Wikileaks' part, but it helps. He, they, could be useful idiots whose program has been conveniently co-opted by the controllers to serve their purpose. Either way, look for the pattern and the effects.]

#4. Watch the hype: There’s a growing crescendo of anger and hate that is now being whipped up–to the point that Assange is being called a new kind of terrorist–and more disturbingly, and as expected, the comparison is now being drawn between Assange and Bin Laden:

WikiLeaks is also under attack by notorious hackers, while its services are being cut-off by Amazon and EveryDNS.net. Although not officially announced, Julian Assange might be considered today’s public enemy number-one, taking the place of the illusive Osama bin Laden. Not since 9/11 has any one figure reached such notoriety due to what many consider acts against a state.Like bin Laden, Assange has no permanent address, does not maintain a headquarters, employs only a select few confidants and has taken to hiding in covert areas. Younger than bin Laden, Assange at 39 years-old may be a little more mobile than the 53 year-old, choosing to hopscotch the globe versus hibernating in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
While his face resides on the covers of magazines and newspapers around the world, similar to a Wild West Wanted poster, little is known about his day-to-day activities. Notice also how we’ve been hearing about Wikileaks’ exploits for a few years now, giving us time to make the connection between it and sensational and destructive informational terrorism. Similarly we heard about Osama through the Yemen and Nairobi attacks being attibuted to him, imprinting his brand on the collective mind which led to the foregone phony conclusion that he had masterminded the 9/11 attacks.Ah, But what about these apparent exposures? Would they attack their own?
Could all these serious indictments against their own just be a deflecting smokescreen to hide the real purpose? Sure worked last time. So why wouldn’t they risk taking down some of their own to give this psychological operation credibility?

Fed Loans Hatched in Bathroom Halted Money-Market Run By Bob Ivry, Christine Richard and Christopher Condon - Dec 3, 2010 10:53 AM ET BLOOMBERG

Cunningham, the manager of $261 billion at Federated Investors Inc., was squeezed into the bathroom of her family’s recreational vehicle, trying to help save the $3.6 trillion money market industry. Cunningham was on the phone with Federal Reserve officials in Boston, New York and Washington. Outside, in the Pennsylvania State University stadium parking lot in State College, football fans were preparing for a game against Temple University. It was the only place I could hear, Cunningham said. People were drinking beer. They kept knocking on the door, saying, I have to go.The solution Cunningham helped craft on Sept. 20, 2008, was a bailout for money market funds, which were created as safe investments that could be easily cashed out. The Fed put the facility into effect two days later. At its peak in October 2008, it provided $152 billion to stem a customer run sparked by the Sept. 15 bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. This week’s disclosures of data from the Fed’s rescue efforts during the 2007-2008 financial crisis show how the central bank employed companies to help design or run programs they could use to their benefit. Federated tapped the money- market rescue for $8.89 billion, according to Fed data. Pacific Investment Management Co. and BlackRock Inc. weren’t only advisers to the Fed, they were also trading securities they helped value, the Fed data show.

No Choice

That’s the way the system works, said David Castillo, senior managing director at Further Lane Securities in San Francisco. It’s problematic that they’re customers, but that shouldn’t limit their ability to participate in this process. Quite frankly, we don’t have a choice. They have the expertise.In compliance with the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law, the Fed on Dec. 1 identified the institutions that used $3.3 trillion of improvised rescue programs. The 21,000 transactions in 11 initiatives included the money-market plan Cunningham helped devise, known as the AMLF, short for its 10-word formal name, the Asset-Backed Commercial Paper Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility.In its scramble to keep the economy from collapsing, the Fed also created the Commercial Paper Funding Facility, or CPFF, which tried to ensure that banks and industrial companies had the short-term loans they needed to fund everyday operations. General Electric Co., then the biggest issuer of commercial paper, met with Treasury and Fed officials in the days before they created the CPFF.

Unintended Consequences

Later, the Fed set up the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility, or TALF, to keep consumer credit flowing. It hired Pimco, manager of the world’s largest bond fund, and BlackRock, the world’s biggest money manager, to provide analytical help, according to a November 2010 report by the Fed’s Office of Inspector General. Any situation where the potential exists for a conflict of interest is concerning, said Kurt Bardella, spokesman for Representative Darrell Issa, the California Republican who will become chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee next month. This really brings into focus one of the unintended consequences of institutionalizing the federal government picking winners and losers while those entities are partaking directly and indirectly in what should be exclusive government functions.

Breaking the Buck

Cunningham was making calls from her camper’s restroom after the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy filing panicked investors, who pulled $230 billion from money-market accounts. The $62.5 billion Reserve Primary Fund, which held $785 million of loans to Lehman Brothers, became the biggest money-market fund and the first in 14 years to break the buck, meaning the value of a share fell below $1 and investors faced losses.Money funds were the main buyers of commercial paper. During the panic, they had to sell off assets to pay investors who demanded their money back. That meant they couldn’t buy the commercial paper that corporations needed to pay for things such as payroll and utility bills. In less than a day, the credit crunch had spread to industrial companies.By Wednesday, Sept. 17, officials at the Fed and the Treasury Department were focused on finding a solution for money funds, says Phill Swagel, who was assistant Treasury secretary for economic policy.Swagel testified to Congress that morning on the deteriorating housing market and returned to the Treasury building around midday, he said. After eating a tuna sandwich, he was on conference calls with Fed officials the rest of the afternoon and late into the night.

Not Normal Policy

Two days later, on Sept. 19, the Treasury announced that for a fee it would insure money market funds against investor losses.It’s not normal policy to say this asset class is now guaranteed, said Swagel, a professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in Washington, in an interview. When there’s a run on money market mutual funds, there’s no time to do anything else but say they’re all guaranteed, we’re done.While the Treasury measure slowed the pace of withdrawals, it didn’t help money-market funds turn assets into cash fast enough to pay investors who wanted out. Putnam Investments LLC closed its $12.3 billion Putnam Prime Money Market Fund on Sept. 17 after investors asked for about a third of the fund’s money. Managers of the Boston-based firm faced the prospect of selling assets in a distressed market, which would cause the fund to break the buck.

Federated’s Fund Takeover

Cunningham’s Federated, based in Pittsburgh, was prepared to take over the assets of the Putnam fund, issuing investors shares in its $22.1 billion Prime Obligations Fund, she said. To make the takeover work, Federated needed to pay off all the Putnam investors who’d demanded their money, she said. For that, she turned to the Fed.We had been working with them trying to figure out what might work to add liquidity to the marketplace, Cunningham said in an interview.The AMLF, the bailout that Cunningham helped design, provided cash for banks to buy asset-backed commercial paper from money market funds. This made it possible for the funds to avoid selling at a discount, and the Fed agreed to take the risk of defaults, guaranteeing a profit for the banks when the loans were repaid.

Single Most Successful

Without the program, it would have been very difficult for Federated to absorb the $12.3 billion in assets of the Putnam fund on Sept. 24, 2008, according to spokeswoman Meghan McAndrew. About half the investors redeemed their shares within a week, she said. That meant the deal brought Federated, the third-biggest U.S. money market company, about $6 billion in assets at no cost.Federated’s Prime Obligations Fund now holds $47 billion of assets, more than double the amount before the transaction. In a deal announced July 16, Federated will pay as much as $38.8 million over five years to acquire $17 billion in money fund assets from SunTrust Banks Inc.Even if the entire Putnam fund redeemed, we were still confident with this facility behind us that there was liquidity in the marketplace and the ability to withstand that, Cunningham said. Putnam investors were immensely aided by this program. It didn’t really help Federated except for some positive press.All AMLF loans have been repaid, and the facility generated $543 million in interest, according to a Fed report.

Commercial Paper

The AMLF was the single most successful government intervention during the financial crisis, said Peter Crane, president of Crane Data LLC, a money-fund research firm in Westborough, Massachusetts, in an interview. In a crisis when you have esoteric corners of the market involved, you have no choice but to go to the experts, and the experts will be self- interested players.While the AMLF helped stabilize money funds, they didn’t start buying commercial paper again. That left issuers without their biggest group of customers and unable to roll over short- term debt as it matured. At 5:45 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, GE Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey R. Immelt met for half an hour with Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. in the secretary’s office, according to Paulson’s schedule.An hour and 15 minutes later, Federal Reserve Bank of New York President Timothy F. Geithner convened a staff meeting to focus on GE issues, according to his schedule. He and Paulson conferred by phone afterward.On Oct. 1, Geithner’s schedule noted a tentative conference call with Immelt, who was a board member of the New York Fed, a position he still has today. GE spokesman Gary Sheffer said the company doesn’t see a conflict with Immelt’s membership on the New York Fed’s board. He declined to comment on the content of Immelt’s conversations.

Reviving Securitization

Less than a month later, the Fed created a bailout of the commercial paper market. A special entity called CPFF LLC, funded by the Fed, bought commercial paper from companies. They included GE, which tapped the facility 12 times for $16.1 billion, the Fed disclosed this week.Assistance to companies, which also included Toyota Motor Corp. ($4.6 billion), Harley-Davidson Inc. ($2.3 billion) and Verizon Communications Inc. ($1.5 billion), topped out at $348.2 billion on Jan. 21, 2009, according to the Fed. The program had no defaults and gained $6.1 billion in interest and fees, the central bank’s Inspector General said in its report.

Creation of TALF

In November 2008, the Fed set out to revive the market for bonds backed by consumer and small business loans. That market froze as an unprecedented number of defaults made assets backed by mortgages impossible to value. Wall Street had fueled lending by bundling mortgages into bonds using an innovation known as securitization.We were pretty confident that banks didn’t have the capacity to essentially replace the capacity that was lost in the securitization market, said William C. Dudley, who headed the New York Fed’s Markets Group at the time and is now the bank’s president, in an interview. We thought the best way forward would be to try and restart the securitization market, rather than just sit back and rely on the banking sector.On Nov. 25, 2008, the Fed created the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility, or TALF, which allowed investors to borrow from the Fed as much as 95 cents of every dollar invested in Fed-approved asset-backed securities. Investors also retained the option of turning the securities over to the Fed if they fell in value.

Pimco, BlackRock

The New York Fed hired Pimco, based in Newport Beach, California, to value collateral, monitor the credit risk of TALF participants and assess the securities market, according to the Inspector General’s report. BlackRock Solutions, a unit of New York-based BlackRock, said it was brought on to supply analytical help on the securities.Without singling out any contractors, the Inspector General’s office said that farming out certain tasks creates the potential for conflicts of interest.If you knew the inner workings of the third-party reviewer, you’re mitigating an incredible risk, said James Harrington, who oversaw TALF investing at his former employer, Ryan Labs Asset Management in New York. Investors were required to buy securities without knowing whether the Fed would accept them for the program. The value of bonds rejected by the Fed would often fall. If you knew that what you were submitting had a better chance of getting accepted, you’d know where the boundaries of the playground were,Harrington said.

Ford Deal

Pimco and BlackRock also participated in TALF as borrowers on behalf of clients, along with other financial companies. Pimco tapped TALF 96 times between April 2009 and March 2010 for a total of $7.26 billion, according to Fed data. Ten funds connected to BlackRock Financial Management Inc., another unit of BlackRock, borrowed a total of $2.8 billion for clients, the Fed disclosed.On the first day of the program, Pimco put up $22 million and borrowed $292 million from the Fed to buy $314 million of bonds backed by Ford Motor Co. auto loans. The fund borrowed from the Fed at the London interbank offered rate plus 100 basis points, or 1 percentage point, and purchased securities yielding Libor plus 250 basis points, or 2.5 percentage points. The return was about 23 percent a year for investing in securities with the highest credit ratings and a Federal Reserve backstop.The Pimco advisory team serving as a TALF collateral monitor for the New York Fed is subject to strict physical, ethical and technological walls and has no involvement in any investment strategies or decisions, said Mark Porterfield, a Pimco spokesman.

We Have Concerns

BlackRock also participated in the initial Ford deal, purchasing $275 million of the same securities as Pimco, using $256 million borrowed through TALF, according to the Fed. Since February, when BlackRock Solutions was hired, BlackRock Financial Management borrowed $248 million to invest in a total of 13 commercial mortgage-backed securities deals.There was no impropriety in BlackRock’s actions, said Bobbie Collins, a BlackRock spokeswoman. BlackRock Solutions was a collateral monitor providing analytical services for TALF, while BlackRock Financial Management tapped the program on behalf of clients, she said. The two units are separate businesses with strict information barriers in place, she said.Firms helping to price hard-to-sell assets could overvalue them to raise the value of their own assets or those of their clients, said Michael Smallberg, an investigator with the Project on Government Oversight, an independent Washington watchdog group.We never found anyone maliciously trying to take advantage of taxpayers, Smallberg said. But we have concerns about how well those firewalls work.

Conflict Review

The New York Fed has carefully managed potential conflicts of interest in TALF, including separating workers, approving staff, restricting personal investments and conducting on-site audits of the controls, said Deborah Kilroe, a bank spokeswoman.
The Inspector General’s report, five months after TALF closed to new investment, said a third-party vendor under contract with the New York Fed’s legal group was performing a conflict-of-interest review and testing compliance with contract provisions.Neither Pimco nor BlackRock has been accused of wrongdoing. The firms didn’t establish policies or approve or reject collateral, according to the Fed. It seems clear that the biggest beneficiaries were the insiders, said Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.We have a huge pinata here. The question is whether we had insiders deciding who would get the candy or was everyone in the same boat? Think of the people who get upset about the government giving a homeowner some help. Now multiply the sums by about 100 million. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – As UN climate talks in Cancun, Mexico, approach the half-way point this weekend (4-5 December), a US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks has revealed that European Council President Herman Van Rompuy had already given up on the multilateral meeting as far back as one year ago.In a discussion with US ambassador to Belgium Howard Gutman on 23 December 2009, Mr Van Rompuy reportedly said the Mexican talks were doomed to failure, while his chief of staff Frans Van Daele predicted they would end up looking like the second installment of a horror movie.The one-hour meeting over coffee took place in Brussels' Justus Lipsius building, just days after UN climate talks in Copenhagen ended in fiasco.Mr Van Daele referred to the distant Mexican meeting as Nightmare on Elm Street 2,before adding: Who wants to see that horror movie again? As the three men huddled in one of the vast building's many hundreds of rooms, Mr Van Rompuy made his position clear by stating: multilateral meetings will not work.He then laid out what he felt would be an appropriate roadmap: first unifying Europe's position on tackling climate change, then holding bilateral talks with the US, before finally holding three-way discussions with China.In his mind, the crucial talks with the US would take place at a EU-US summit scheduled to take place in May 2010 and not at Cancun where representatives from almost 200 nations are currently meeting (29 Nov - 10 Dec 2010) at considerable expense to the organisers.Just over a month later however, the bilateral EU-US summit was cancelled by the Americans.Mr Van Rompuy and his chief of staff cut lonely figures in the almost empty Justus Lipsius building back in December 2009, according to the US ambassador's description, with most EU officials in Brussels already away on Christmas vacation.

Becoming animated, the mild-mannered Belgian told his US interlocutor he was extremely glad not to have attended the just-ended Copenhagen climate talks.Had I been there, my presidency would have been over before it began,he said.The former Belgian prime minister formally took over his new post on 1 January 2010, but had faced considerable pressure to attend the Copenhagen talks, which he described as an incredible disaster.He thought Europe had been totally excluded and mistreated and he refused to accept the US ambassador's line that the meeting's chaotic nature was the reason the EU had been left out of crucial final discussions between the US and China, amongst others, which ultimately resulted in a weaker-than-hoped-for Copenhagen Accord.They could certainly have called Europe and told us to come,Mr Rompuy told the ambassador.He did lay some of the blame for Europe's treatment on its own doorstep however, reportedly telling Mr Gutman that: No one knows who to call: Merkel, Barroso, who knows who?

Carmel is Smoldering, but Most Fires are Out

The Evergreen Supertanker fire-fighting airplane and dozens of other fire-dousing aircraft have helped stop the Carmel fire from spreading any further than it already has, according to reports from the field. Firefighters and rescue officials said that most of the fires in the Carmel mountains are no longer giving off flames and by 4:00 PM they were preparing to announce that the fire is officially under control.

Colder temperatures and possible rain showers that are forecast tonight are also expected to help end the fiery nightmare that the Carmel region has undergone in the last 72 hours.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu echoed this assessment Sunday afternoon. The mountain is smoldering, but it has almost ceased to burn, he said. He spoke at the Druze village of Ussefiya, one of the locations at which the huge fire was started Thursday, where he was to attend an ad hoc Local Council meeting.

Netanyahu sounded optimistic when he addressed the press. He said that numerous nations of the world offered Israel aid in putting out the fire, and that one reason for this was that the entire world is familiar with Israel's biblical landscape, including Mount Carmel. He claimed with satisfaction that Israel appeared to be bringing the fire to an end after three days, while similar events last three weeks in other countries. The difference, Netanyahu explained, is that Israel is a small country and that we have no other land.Netanyahu noted that he had received important assistance from Jordan and had had good conversations with King Abdullah II, as well as President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who also offered aid. Perhaps something good will come of this disaster,Netanyahu said.Netanyahu appeared intent on dousing the flames of anger that the fire has lit in the Israeli public. US, Israel Slam Brazil's Recognition of PA as New Country

The United States and Israel both blasted Brazil after Friday's announcement of formal recognition of the Palestinian Authority as a new independent Arab country, one month before President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to leave office.

Lula da Silva announced his decision in a letter sent December 1 to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Brazil recognizes Palestine, Lula da Silva wrote, and hopes that the recognition will help lead to two states, Israel and Palestine, that will co-exist peacefully and in security.The official announcement was posted on the website of Brazil's Foreign Ministry, according to the Associated Press, which noted the recognition came in response to a request made by Abbas last month.

Israel: Regrets Move Which Violates Agreement
The Israeli government expressed its regret and disappointment with the decision in a statement released Sunday by the Foreign Ministry. Noting that Lula da Silva has only a month left to go before passing the baton to his successor, Israel pointed out that recognition of a Palestinian state is a violation of the Interim Agreement signed between Israel and the PA in 1995, a reference to the amended Oslo Accords.

Spokesman Andy David told Israel National News on Sunday afternoon that although the Foreign Ministry had been aware the declaration was in the works, personnel had only a few days' notice, and there had been hopes it would not come to pass.It also contradicts the Roadmap (peace plan formulated by the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush), adopted by the Quartet [of peacekeeping nations] and supported by the international community,the statement noted.Israel pointed out that the two governments of Israel and the PA are currently making efforts to resume the negotiations between them. Any attempt to circumvent this process and make unilateral decisions on important and controversial issues, the statement said, only harms the good faith of the parties and those who are obligated under the agreed-upon framework for the peace talks.

US: Brazil Severely Misguided
U.S. Representative Eliot Engel, a member of President Barack Obama's Democratic party, meanwhile scorned the decision over the weekend as severely misguided, and said it represents a last gasp by a Lula-led foreign policy which was already substantially off track.A co-chair of the Congressional Brazil Caucus, Engel noted the soon-to-be ex-president had grown close to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He was quoted by the AFP news service as saying Brazil wants to establish itself as a voice in the world but is making the wrong choices as it tries to do so.President-elect Dilma Roussef, a former cabinet chief and protege of Lula da Silva, is sending a message to the Palestinians that they need not make peace to gain recognition as a sovereign state, Engel said. He added that he nevertheless remains a strong supporter of Brazil as a dynamic, diverse democracy.U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the incoming Republican chairperson of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee also slammed the announcement. Helen Thomas Award Pulled after Rant about Zionist Control

Wayne State University, the alma mater of Arab-American journalist Helen Thomas, has pulled an award in her name, following a speech she gave Thursday claiming that Congress, the White House, Wall Street, and Hollywood are controlled by Zionists. WSU had kept the award following an earlier outburst in which she suggested that Israeli Jews get the hell out of Palestine.Thomas, 90, told an audience in Dearborn, Michigan, that Zionists control the American government and other major institutions. They put their money where their mouth is... We're being pushed in the wrong direction in every way,she stated.WSU officials announced Friday that they would no longer offer the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity Award.As a public university, Wayne State encourages free speech and open dialogue, and respects diverse viewpoints, a statement said. However, the university strongly condemns the anti-Semitic remarks made by Helen Thomas during a conference yesterday.

The award was previously granted for journalism work that promotes diversity.

In June, Thomas gave an impromptu interview to Rabbi David Nesenoff in which she said that Jews should get the hell out of Palestine and go back home to Poland, Germany, America and everywhere else. The decision to appoint Meir Dagan was one of the best decisions made by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon,he said.Barak said that Pardo is the right man to jump start the Mossad forward toward new goals.
