Wall Street slides as mortgage worries hit banks

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stocks declined on Tuesday as banks shares slid on fears Bank of America (BAC.N) may be forced to buy back mortgages, while Apple (AAPL.O) and IBM (IBM.N) fell after their results disappointed investors.Bank of America shares fell 2.6 percent to $12.03 after a Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter, said investors PIMCO and BlackRock as well as the New York Federal Reserve Bank were seeking to force the lender to repurchase $47 billion in mortgage bonds.

Concerns that mortgage lenders did not follow due diligence when securitizing mortgages have led some banks, including Bank of America, to halt mortgage foreclosures. The KBW bank index (.BKX) fell 1.1 percent.This is more octane for the sell-off, said Todd Schenberger, managing director with LandColt Trading in Wilmington, Delaware. You would think all the financials may have to do this going forward.The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 185.05 points, or 1.66 percent, at 10,958.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was down 19.64 points, or 1.66 percent, at 1,165.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 45.13 points, or 1.82 percent, at 2,435.53.Apple's shares fell 2.8 percent to $308.86 and, although well off the day's lows, weighed on the Nasdaq after iPad sales fell short of some analysts' expectations. Only the day before, Apple shares hit a lifetime high.International Business Machines Corp was lower after it won fewer technology service deals than expected in the third quarter. Global leaders mull joint governance ahead of G20

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AFP) – World leaders examined at the weekend frameworks for global governance ahead of a G20 summit in Seoul, with UN chief Ban Ki-Moon stressing no single power could tackle key issues alone.Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying told the World Policy Conference (WPC) in Marrakech: We see eye to eye on the challenges, and added that we need to find a better way to cooperate, to find a partnership.The forum was also addressed by Ban, European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet, EU commissioner Joaquin Almunia, government ministers and business and social leaders.With the G20 meeting on November 11-12 set to be dominated by currency disputes and the threat of protectionist measures, the WPC theme of global governance in finance, the economy and politics was a timely issue.No country or group -- no matter how powerful -- can take on the major issues of the day alone, Ban said in his address.Ban underscored three poles of focus, help for the poor and vulnerable, the fight against climate catastrophes, and new-generation issues like migration, health research and the fight against organised crime and terrorism.Leaders needed to strive in particular for a world economy that works for all people not just a fortunate minority, the UN chief said.Almunia said the 27-member European Union had to strengthen its cohesion to contribute to global leadership but also allow emerging countries a greater voice in institutions like the International Monetary Fund.Referring to past talks with leaders from China, emerging countries and the United States, Almunia acknowledged that if Europe had one position then it does not need eight Europeans around the table.A sub forum that focused on the meeting in Korea noted that the issue of over-representation of the EU within the G20 needs to be addressed as well.

Currency turmoil could jeopardise recovery: WTO chief

GENEVA (AFP) – WTO chief Pascal Lamy warned just days before a key meeting of G20 finance ministers that economic recovery could be put in serious jeopardy by uncooperative behaviour on foreign exchange markets.The hard-won path towards stability and trade-led recovery could be put in serious jeopardy by uncooperative currency behaviour, Lamy told a meeting of the World Trade Organisation's 153 members on Tuesday.The WTO director-general said the response to fears that economies might seek a competitive advantage by inducing a favourable exchange rate was a matter for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rather than the WTO.But I nevertheless thought that I would share this concern with you because I believe history will judge us harshly if our collective efforts towards exiting the economic crisis were to be frustrated by short-sighted individual rent seeking,Lamy said.

Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers are expected to discuss volatile foreign exchange markets at a meeting in South Korea on Friday, ahead of a G20 summit next month.Some analysts fear a protectionist currency war in which major economies seeking to export their way out of the downturn try to cap or lower their currencies to keep the prices of their exports down.Hours before the informal meeting of the WTO's rule-making Trade Negotiations Committee, Lamy told journalists that there is a risk of friction and it is real.Exchange (rates) are moving more for the moment than they had a few months ago,he added. There is a certain amount of disorder.Lamy said a multilateral approach was the best way of containing the risk, beginning with a common diagnosis of the origins of the instability in foreign exchange markets.He pointed out that if a country used exchange rates to boost its competitiveness, it placed political pressure on others.There's a risk of reaction and counter-reaction, which is typically what we have managed to avoid, he explained.

The United States and Europe claim that China, the world's biggest exporter, is keeping its currency grossly undervalued, while the US dollar has fallen and Brazil has intervened to halt the real from appreciating.The World Bank said in a report on Tuesday that a stronger yuan exchange rate was in China's interests and would help the country rein in inflation and boost domestic consumption.It said that developed and developing countries worldwide are bent on avoiding stronger exchange rates, as concerns about weak foreign demand -- and a limited scope for exports to boost growth -- intensify.The report on East Asia's developing economies -- which excludes Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- said China remains the region's economic powerhouse, with projected growth of 9.5 percent in 2010.

PALO ALTO, Calif./WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner vowed on Monday that the United States would not devalue the dollar for export advantage, saying no country could weaken its currency to gain economic health.It is not going to happen in this country. Geithner told Silicon Valley business leaders of devaluing the dollar.Geithner broke his silence on the dollar's protracted slide ahead of this weekend's meeting of finance leaders from the Group of 20 wealthy and emerging nations in South Korea, where rising tensions over Chinese and U.S. currency valuations are expected to take center stage.It is very important for people to understand that the United States of America and no country around the world can devalue its way to prosperity, to (be) competitive, Geithner added. It is not a viable, feasible strategy and we will not engage in it.Answering audience questions before the Commonwealth Club of California in Palo Alto, he said the United States needed to work hard to preserve confidence in the strong dollar.Geithner, normally reluctant to publicly discuss currency and market movements, has not uttered the so-called strong dollar mantra -- a refrain he helped create at Treasury in the 1990s -- since February.On Friday, the dollar index hit a 10-month low against a basket of major currencies, while the greenback has been plumbing fresh 15-year lows against Japan's yen .

Many emerging market countries are complaining that Fed money creation is weakening the dollar, and causing more funds to flow into their markets, pushing up their currencies.Talk of a currency war has persisted as countries take action to keep from losing export competitiveness.Brazil on Monday moved to cool a strong rally in its currency by raising taxes for foreigners buying local bonds and trading in foreign exchange derivatives.Finance Minister Guido Mantega said the move was aimed at reducing foreign investment into Brazil, and he urged other countries to take coordinated action against the weak dollar.Argentina's Minister of Economy and Public Finance Amado Boudou on Monday called on developed nations to focus on creating jobs rather than actions that weaken their currencies, saying a true currency war was underway.

U.S. POINTS TO CHINA

The G20 finance ministers and central bank governors at the meetings in Gyeongju, South Korea are expected to tackle head-on the disparities in currency policies that are distorting capital flows in the hopes of achieving a more coordinated approach.
But U.S. officials have put most of the blame on China's highly restrictive exchange rate regime, which until recently had kept the yuan largely pegged to the dollar. The United States is pressuring China to allow the value of its yuan to rise to take some pressure off capital flows and to rebalance its economy away from exports.On Friday, however, Geithner delayed a report about whether the yuan's value is being manipulated, saying instead that he wants to work through the G20 process to hash out a multilateral solution.Geithner said in Palo Alto that he believes China will continue to lift the value of its yuan currency to aid the rebalancing of its economy away from exports and toward domestic growth.Asked how much higher China should allow the yuan to rise, Geithner said: Higher.You can't know how far it should go. What you know now is that it's significantly undervalued which I think they acknowledge and it's better for them, and of course very important for us, that it move. And I think it's going to continue to move, Geithner said. However, his remarks did not square with an official Chinese state newspaper that reported the accelerated pace of yuan appreciation in recent weeks will not last long because China's trade surplus will soon peak. BEIJING – The World Bank raised its growth forecast for East Asia's developing countries Tuesday but said governments need to control rising risks from surging capital inflows and currency strains.Output has rebounded to above pre-crisis levels and regional growth should hit 8.9 percent this year, up from a previous forecast of 8.7 percent, the bank said. Last year's expansion was 7.3 percent.The economic recovery in East Asia and the Pacific is robust, but attention must now turn to managing emerging risks which may pose challenges to macroeconomic stability, the bank said in a twice-a-year outlook for the region's economies, excluding Japan.

Asia's rebound has attracted an influx of capital that is pushing up the value of some currencies, which might hurt exports. Some governments have intervened in foreign exchange markets to slow the rise of their currencies, raising fears of a potential currency war that might disrupt trade and growth.The World Bank called for the region's governments to work out a common approach.So far, export growth has remained robust, but with continued real appreciation of East Asian currencies this growth could slow, the bank said.Prospects for China look bright but Beijing must push ahead the rebalancing of its economy away from exports and investment to sustain its expansion, the bank said. It said China's economy is expected to grow by 9.5 percent this year.Rebalancing the economy by altering the pattern of growth and investment is becoming increasingly critical to ensure sustainability — structurally, socially, and globally, the report said.The report also covers Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Brunei Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, the Solomon Islands and smaller Pacific island nations.

Regional economies need to cope with sharp price rises and possible strains to their financial systems from the influx of capital, the World Bank said.Inflation is being driven by a rise in the cost of food and industrial materials, the report said. Price rises in China and Indonesia have exceeded targets and Thailand is warning of a similar danger there.Rice prices were up 10 percent in August over a year ago due to poor harvests in Russia and supply disruptions in China and Pakistan, the bank said. On the one hand, the powers that be in Europe are stopping the printing presses, while the Federal Reserve Bank in the United States has the printers at full steam ahead. The U.S. Federal Reserve is getting ready to conduct another gigantic bailout of the big banks, but this time virtually nobody in the mainstream media will use the term bailout and the American people are going to get a lot less upset about it. You see, one lesson that was learned during the last round of bank bailouts was that the American people really, really do not like it when the U.S. Congress votes to give money to the big banks. So this time, the financial powers that be have figured out a way around that. Instead of going through the massive headache of dealing with the U.S. Congress, the Federal Reserve is simply going to print money and give it directly to the banks. To be more precise, the Federal Reserve is going to use a procedure known as quantitative easing to print money out of thin air in order to purchase large quantities of troubled assets (such as mortgage-backed securities) from the biggest U.S. banks at well above market price. Some are already openly wondering if this next round of quantitative easing is going to be the biggest bank robbery in history. Most Americans won’t understand these backdoor bailouts well enough to get upset about them, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t be just as bad (or even worse) than the last round of bailouts. In the end, all of the inflation that this new round of quantitative easing is going to cause is going to be a hidden tax on all of us.

These new backdoor bailouts are going to work something like this….

1) The big U.S. banks have massive quantities of junk mortgage-backed securities that are worth little to nothing that they desperately want to get rid of.

2) They convince the Federal Reserve (which the big banks are part-owners of) to buy up these “toxic assets” at way above market price.

3) The Federal Reserve creates massive amounts of money out of thin air to buy up all of these troubled assets. The public is told that all of this quantitative easing (DEVALUING DOLLARS WORLDWIDE) is necessary to stimulate the U.S. economy.

4) The big banks are re-capitalized and have gotten massive amounts of bad mortgage securities off their hands, the Federal Reserve has found a way to pump hundreds of billions (if not trillions) of dollars into the economy, and most of the American people are none the wiser.

But this isn’t the only way that the Federal Reserve forks over massive amounts of cash to the big U.S. banks. In a previous article, I described how the U.S. Federal Reserve lends huge quantities of nearly interest-free money to big U.S. banks which they turn around and invest in U.S. Treasuries which bring in a return of three percent or so. In essence, it is a legalized way for the big U.S. banks to make mountains and mountains of free money.The truth is that the Federal Reserve does whatever it can to ensure that the big U.S. banks stay fat and happy.So what about the small banks? What happens to them? Well, the vast majority of the small banks are considered not big enough for bailouts and they are allowed to die like dogs.Don’t let anyone ever fool you into thinking that the U.S. banking system has a level playing field.For weeks, Federal Reserve officials have been coming out and have been dropping hints about how important it is for them to take action and implement another round of quantitative easing in order to help stimulate the U.S. economy.In fact, during his speech on Friday, you could almost hear Ben Bernanke salivating at the thought of printing more money.But nobody ever really asks who is going to be the first to get their hands on all this money that the Fed is going to pump into the economy.

The answer, of course, is obvious.It is going to be the big banks – the same banks that are part-owners of the Federal Reserve and that have tremendous influence over Fed policies.But even though this is all more than a little shady, is it such a bad thing for the rest of us if the Federal Reserve bails out the big banks and brings some much needed stability back to the U.S. financial system? After all, if Foreclosure-Gate could potentially cause a nightmarish financial meltdown, isn’t it better for the Federal Reserve to step in and soak up large amounts of these toxic assets?

Those are legitimate questions.

Certainly the Federal Reserve has the power to step in and smooth over all sorts of short-term problems by papering them with money, but in the end printing more money will just make our long-term problems even worse.Whenever a new dollar is introduced into the system, every other dollar in existence loses a little bit of value.When trillions of new dollars get introduced into the system, it has the potential to create an inflationary nightmare.Already, a number of top Fed officials are publicly saying that inflation is too low and that we need to purposely generate more inflation in order to stimulate the U.S. economy.Yes, that is just as insane as it sounds, but that is what they are actually proposing.Apparently many top Federal Reserve officials honestly believe that they can pump trillions into the economy, jack up inflation significantly, and little harm will be done.But even before QE2 has begun, we are already starting to see all kinds of little bubbles beginning to develop in the financial system. For example, commodity prices are skyrocketing right now, and that will soon be affecting the price we pay for food at the supermarket.We are already on the road to serious inflation and the Federal Reserve has not even fired up the money hoses yet. So what is going to happen after they pump trillions more into the economy? Printing more money and giving it to the banks is not going to solve our economic problems. It is just going to make them worse.
But unfortunately, American voters get no say about any of this. Our national monetary policy is in the hands of an unelected central bank that does pretty much whatever it wants.An economic nightmare is coming, and you had better get ready.

Thousands of vaccines have been given worldwide, with 14,000 children in Oklahoma as test subjects for the experimental first wave of the swine flu vaccines in 2009. There was no shortage of warnings regarding the vaccine, however, with about 50% of doctors refusingto be injected. Citizens and doctors alike were also warned numerous times that the swine flu vaccine had a direct link with Guillain-Barre Syndrome.Even mainstream media was forced to pick up on the link, with the Times Online offering warning that the vaccine had a death link. Neurologists around the world were even warned about the safety of the vaccine by Professor Elizabeth Miller, head of the immunization department for UK’s Health Protection Agency.The vaccines used to combat an expected swine influenza pandemic in 1976 were shown to be associated with GBS and were withdrawn from use, she wrote in a letter to neurologists.Of course the government was quick to claim that the vaccinations were completely safe, and had met all of the safety requirements.

The department of health was quick to go against Professor Miller and claim that the vaccines had passed all of the required tests: Appropriate trials to assess safety and immune responses have been carried out on vaccines very similar to the swine flu vaccine. The vaccines have been shown to have a good safety profile.If the government was confident regarding the safety of the vaccination, then why were manufacturers given complete legal immunity? This legal immunity made it impossible to sue the manufacturers of the swine flu vaccine. Even if the vaccines were safe to begin with, wouldn’t this enhance carelessness of the manufacturers? With complete legal immunity, the makers could get away with anything.Why then, would anyone receive the swine flu vaccine? The simple answer is that the swine flu scare drove some citizens to run in fear, with the vaccine as their advertised salvation. In reality, swine flu did not turn out to be the pandemic that it was propagated to be. Citizens would be better off improving their immune system naturally through proper nutrition than to receive a deadly swine flu vaccine.

Saudi intelligence issues EU terror alert

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Saudi Arabian intelligence has issued a fresh alert about an Al-Qaeda plot in Europe, hot on the heels of a similar warning from the US last month. Speaking in an interview with French radio station RTL on Sunday (17 October), French interior minister Brice Hortefeux said: I can tell you - and it's not information that's been made public yet - that even a few hours, a few days ago, there was a new message, from the Saudi services, indicating to us that Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula was certainly active, or expecting to be active, in Europe, especially France.The minister noted that the French national security alert level is to stay at reinforced red, one step below the maximum scarlet level. He added: This is not about overestimating the threat or underestimating it ... I am indicating, based on all these elements, that the threat is real.Mr Hortefeux put the Saudi warning in the context of earlier alerts in September from Interpol and from Algerian intelligence. The Algeria alert on 16 September spoke of a female suicide attack against a French target. He explained that France currently has 61 people in prison on terrorism charges and that it is monitoring jihadist websites and a certain number of people who study at extremist Koranic institutes and who are planning to return to France from the Maghreb.He also said that Basque separatist group ETA and Corsican separatist groups remain active in France but have been considerably weakened by French police initiatives.

Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is an Al-Qaeda offshoot believed to have been formed in 2009 in Yemen which claimed responsibility for a failed Christmas-Day airline bombing in Detroit, in the US, last December.The US on 3 October published a blanket terror alert for US citizens in the EU, also citing al-Qaeda. US intelligence officials later leaked information that tourist sites such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Alexanderplatz in Berlin were potential targets. The UK followed the US with its own warning, naming France and Germany. Sweden had one day before the US also published an alert.EU interior ministers meeting in Luxembourg with the US deputy secretary for homeland security, Jane Holl Lute, agreed on measures to better co-ordinate security information in future. The ministers said they would in pre-notify the EU's Brussels-based intelligence-sharing bureau, the Joint Situation Centre, prior to raising national threat levels.Belgian interior minister Annemie Turtelboom at the time suggested the US alert may have been an over-reaction.Referring to the latest Hortefeux statement, Raphael Perl, the head of antiterrorism for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, told the New York Times: If this information is coming indeed from the Saudis, one can expect that it is serious and reliable.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are on Monday(18 October) to hold a brainstorming session with Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev on issues ranging from missile defence to frozen conflicts, following Moscow's request to be more involved in European security matters.The two-day meeting in the French resort town of Deauville is partly aimed at alleviating Russian concerns over a missile defence shield to be endorsed by Nato at a summit next month, to which Mr Medvedev has also been invited. The Deauville meeting will be a brainstorming exercise, certainly not a directorate of three, the Elysee has said, according to Le Figaro. Russia is looking more and more to the West and Deauville should be an occasion to accomadate this positive evolution.In 2003, the German, French and Russian leaders met in the same format to air criticism of the war on Iraq – an issue that divided leaders on the continent. The last meeting of the trio was in 2006 in Compiegne, where Ms Merkel met with former French president Jacques Chirac and the current Russian premier, Vladimir Putin.Mr Sarkozy could be looking to the Deauville meeting to divert media attention from the prolongued strikes and public dissent over his pension reforms. Meanwhile, in Berlin, Chancellor Merkel said that the main aim of the event is to talk about possibilities of letting Russia and Nato co-operate better, because the time of the Cold War is over once and for all.Moscow has until now fiercely opposed plans to deploy a US missile defence shield in Europe, arguing that it is aimed at Russia rather than so-called rogue states such as Iran or north Korea. At a summit in Lisbon on 19-20 November Nato allies are set to endorse linking up existing European air defence systems to the US' current shield and to extend the invitation to Russia.Mr Medvedev has been invited to Lisbon but has not responded yet. The French and German leaders will try to convince him that the new missile shield is not a revival of Cold-War-style anti-Russia tactics but part of a new security architecture from stretching Vancouver to Vladivostok, as the Nato secretary general recently put it.

The idea of a common security pact from Canada to Russia is one of Mr Medevedev's pet projects and is likely to come up again in Deauville. But no European country nor the US have come out in favour of a major new treaty with Moscow.We would like Russia and the EU to be able to take joint decisions, Vladimir Chizhov, Moscow's ambassador to the European Union, told the International Herald Tribune in an interview ahead of the Deauville meeting. I don't expect to be sitting at every session of the [EU Council's] political and security committee, but there should be some mechanism that would enable us to take joint steps.Ms Merkel and Mr Medvedev in June jointly proposed the establishment of a new entity - the EU-Russia Political and Security Committee. The new committee is to consist of the foreign ministers from the two sides and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.The frozen conflict in Transnistria, a Moldovan region, could be a focus for the special forum, the two leaders said at the time.The EU's envoy to Moldova, Kalman Mizsei, recently said Russia must end its military mission in Transnistria and urged the EU and US to be fully engaged in negotiating a peace accord. Ground Zero Mosque Developer Facing Fiscal Woes

New York's Ground Zero mosque developer is being sued by a bank for defaulting on a credit line, and his firm has been forced to move from its office.Sharif El-Gamal's real estate firm, Soho Properties, held a $100,000 line of credit from the Valley National Bank, which it secured in 2008. El-Gamal personally guaranteed the credit line, according to a report published October 17 in the New York Post.However, the firm defaulted on the loan in early 2009, possibly due to the global economic crash, plus skyrocketing costs due to the need to fend off numerous challenges to the project on Park Place.Last month, with Soho Properties in arrears on its rent to the tune of some $39,000, the landlord initiated eviction proceedings. El-Gamal moved the firm out of the office – but is now facing a lawsuit from the bank, which seeks $95,778 plus interest on the unpaid loan.The developer also owes money on city taxes, which were due in January and July, but last month settled with the city on a payment plan for $270,000, including the interest.The project, which involves the former Burlington Coat Factory building, to be renamed Cordoba House, includes plans for a 13-story mosque, health club and Islamic community center. American Muslims Gather on Capitol Hill

The second annual Islam on Capitol Hill event was held last Friday. CNN reported that hundreds of Muslims turned out for the event, which was held in Washington and saw Muslim children touring the halls of Congress, hours of prayers and speeches on the Capitol lawn, and a banquet at a hotel off the National Mall.The number of attendees was relatively small considering that the event’s organizers had called for 100,000 people to come out and participate.The event was held as tensions are already high between Muslims and non-Muslims in the United States, in the wake of the plans to build an Islamic center which includes a mosque near Ground Zero in New York. Large protests have been held against the mosque by angry US citizens since the summer.The mosque has been endorsed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spoke of religious liberty, and even US President Barack Obama who said: As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.However, it is not just the Ground Zero mosque which has caused an outrage among US citizens. Similar projects throughout the country have had a similar effect, and analysts have attributed this to growing concerns among US citizens that allowing Muslims the same religious freedom enjoyed by other Americans would threaten American values.

Another possible reason cited for the growing hostility towards Islam is a fear by Americans of being overtaken by Islam, a concern which might be expressed by the flyer for the Islam on the Capitol event, which characterized the Jummah prayer (the Islamic prayer said on Fridays) on Capitol Hill as The Return of Jesus.Despite the flyer which appears to be trying to attract Christians to the event, organizer Abdul Malik told CNN that the event is aimed primarily at Muslim youth: It's important for young Muslims to understand the beauty of this country - that this is a land of freedom, even though there may be people objecting to building a mosque in New York or threatening to burn the Quran.Malik added that he plans to continue holding Islam on Capitol Hill each year.Muslim children need to know that this is their country and that they have a responsibility to protect and honor it. I want to make sure they're not radicalized by any elements, especially on the internet. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) published last week its list of the ten most influential and active anti-Israel groups in the United States. The groups listed are ones that organize mass demonstrations featuring extreme anti-Israel and anti-Zionist messages, spread malicious propaganda against Israel, and pursue boycott, divestment and sanctions campaigns against Israel.Among the groups on the list are Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER), Council on American-Islamic Relations, If Americans Knew, the Muslim American Society, and the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.As ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman explained: While there are hundreds of groups that organize and participate in various anti-Israel activities, we have identified the largest and most well-coordinated anti-Israel groups. These groups are not promoting peace, they are spreading propaganda to assault Israel's legitimacy. We want to Americans to know who these groups are and what it is they really stand for, which is to delegitimize the Jewish state.In what some may see as surprising, the ADL’s list also included a Jewish organization, the Jewish Voice for Peace, an organization which, according to its website, works to achieve a lasting peace that recognizes the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians for security and self-determination.The group boasts of offices in New York and California, 100,000 online activists, chapters across the country and an Advisory Board comprised of numerous prominent Jewish thinkers and artists. Some of its activities, according to its website, include conducting global campaigns to defend and free Israeli and Arab human rights activists, supporting the growth of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement through divestment from companies that profit from what they call the occupation and even supporting alternative Jewish rituals that include Palestinian narratives.

Recently, the Jewish Voice for Peace organized a petition signed by more than 150 theater and film professionals, many of them Jews, in support for counterparts in Israel who are boycotting the town of Ariel. The petition was signed by four Pulitzer Prize winners, several recipients of Guggenheim Fellowships, a MacArthur Fellowship, a National Medal of Honor and scores of recipients of the highest U.S. acting honors, including the Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Obie and Drama Desk awards.The Jewish Voice for Peace refuted the claims by ADL. Law Professor: Stop Ignoring The Truth About Har-Shefi

Fifteen years after the event, everything connected with the murder of Yitzchak Rabin is still one of the most sensitive issues in Israeli society – and anything that interferes with the official account, that would require authorities to reconsider any aspect of the murder, is off limits - including the possibility of exonerating Margalit Har-Shefi of charges that she failed to prevent Rabin's death, says Professor Eliav Shochetman, Professor Emeritus of Jewish Law at Hebrew University and Dean of the Sha'arei Mishpat College Law School.Whether other open questions need to be reconsidered, says Professor Shochetman, the case of Har-Shefi would seem to be one all could agree on, considering that two heads of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) – Carmi Gillon and Ami Ayalon – both said that there was absolutely no basis for charging and convicting her on failing to stop Yigal Amir from killing Rabin. Those who are intent on keeping Har-Shefi's charges intact ignore those statements, as they ignore much else that should be examined about the Rabin murder,Professor Shochetman says. On Monday, apparently closing out the latest round of public discussion on reversing her conviction, State Prosecutor Moshe Lador said he would not exonerate Har-Shefi, because no new information had emerged to warrant such a move.Har-Shefi's lengthy trials – there were three, including two appeals, between 1997 and 2001 – netted her a nine-month jail sentence. She was charged with having advance knowledge of the intentions of Yigal Amir, who is serving a life sentence for killing Rabin. According to prosecutors, Amir several times declared that Rabin was a rodeph,an agent of destruction in Jewish law; and according to some rabbinical authorities, anyone who achieves that status is subject to the death penalty. For example, prosecutors described a bus ride in which Amir made his declaration in front of a group of his fellow Bar-Ilan University students; the group began an earnest debate, with Amir's listeners trying to convince him he was wrong. Amir refused to budge, and the group abandoned him, turning away to discuss other issues. Har-Shefi, however, continued talking to Amir, proving, according to the prosecution, that she sympathized with his intentions and that, if not guilty of aiding and abetting, was at least guilty of failing to act to prevent the murder.

In its ruling on her final appeal, the High Court said that based on the evidence, she knew for certain that Amir considered Rabin subject to the death penalty. Har-Shefi, aged 19, proclaimed her innocence numerous times, but in 2001, she began serving her time in prison. By then, however, a public outcry had developed over her being unfairly railroaded by a justice system eager to strike out at symbols (Har-Shefi was a member of the National Religious camp), ignoring principles of law.A prison parole board refused to consider her for early good-behavior release, despite the fact that it described her behavior in prison as perfect. At that point, then-President Moshe Katzav decided to pardon Har-Shefi, and she was released from prison. Even then, leftist groups refused to let the matter lie, and filed a petition with the High Court seeking to cancel the pardon – which, the Court said, it was unable to do, even if it had wanted to, because the president has a constitutional right to pardon prisoners.Although nearly a decade has passed, and her pardon stands, Professor Shochetman says that an exoneration is warranted. Professor Shochetman has written numerous about the Har-Shefi case over the years, and says that justice will not be served until her conviction is struck down. She still has a record, and always will, until she is exonerated,he said. And there is a very strong case for doing so, he says; Gillon and Ayalon, both of whom were in charge of the Shin Bet during the period of the Rabin assassination and its aftermath, both have said categorically that Har-Shefi is not guilty of the charges on which she was convicted. In 2007, Ayalon said that I know for a fact that she did not know Amir's intentions to kill Rabin. I was head of the Shin Bet. She is paying the price for the failure of society and the rabbis to draw red lines on acceptable protests against the Oslo Accords, Ayalon said. In his autobiography, Gillon made similar statements.Although Katsav pardoned Har-Shefi, Professor Shochetman says that justice has still not been served – since she is still listed in court archives as a convict, albeit a pardoned one. As to why the powers that be refuse to reconsider Har-Shefi's conviction, in light of Ayalon's and Gillon's statements, Professor Shochetman says he prefers not to delve into their thought processes. I have my theories, but so do many people. I prefer to deal with facts, Professor Shochetman says, and the fact is that she should never have been convicted.(Israel NationalNews.com)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – An earthquake rattled the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch on Tuesday, cutting power and phone service and sending some residents running into the streets just weeks after a more powerful quake caused extensive damage.The magnitude 5.0 temblor was one of hundreds of aftershocks that have hit the city since a magnitude-7 quake on Sept. 4 that wrecked thousands of homes, tore up farmland but did not kill anyone. The latest one shook buildings and sent objects tumbling from shelves, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.Very scary, said cafe owner Flick Holmes. It definitely was a very big one. Everything rocked. Just when you think you're getting used to it, (another) goes, she said.Prime Minister John Key told reporters he was concerned for the city's resident who just want the aftershocks to come to an end.Tuesday's quake was centered six miles (10 kilometers) southwest of the city and just five miles (nine kilometers) below the surface, New Zealand's geological agency GNS Science said. It was felt strongly because it was so shallow, agency seismologist Bill Fry told New Zealand's National Radio.Electricity and phone service were cut to several parts of the city, and a number of buildings in the city center were evacuated, civil defense officials said.

CAUAYAN, Philippines – Super Typhoon Megi dumped heavy rains over the Philippine capital as it departed Tuesday after killing seven people, creating a wasteland of fallen trees in the north and sending thousands scrambling to safety in near-zero visibility.The strongest cyclone to buffet the country in years slammed into the northern Philippines on Monday and was forecast to regain strength over the South China Sea on Tuesday as it headed toward China and Vietnam, where recent floods unrelated to the storm already have caused 30 deaths.Surging currents on Vietnam's flooded main highway Monday swept away a bus and 20 of its passengers, including a boy pulled from his mother's grasp. In China, authorities evacuated 140,000 people from a coastal province ahead of the typhoon that was expected to hit the southern coast around midnight Tuesday. Heavy rains have already lashed Hainan.Megi packed sustained winds of 140 miles (225 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 162 mph (260 kph) as it made landfall in the northern province of Isabela, felling trees and utility poles and cutting off power, phone and Internet services. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Steady rains toppled hillsides and turned streets into rivers in the Haitian capital over the weekend, leaving at least 12 people dead and three missing, civil protection officials said Monday.Storms falling on the mountains that ring the capital sent cascades into the pitch-black downtown, where trucks left boat-like wakes as they forded boulevards.Eight people were killed when water rushed over a sand quarry on the capital's western edge, sending a sheet of slurry roaring through their quake-damaged homes below, said Nadine Lochard, civil protection coordinator for the department that includes Port-au-Prince.Such quarries, used for cheap concrete to build homes in Port-au-Prince's ever-expanding slums, scar Haiti's deforested hillsides. Many of the homes destroyed in the mudslide were made of the brittle, sand-based concrete from similar quarries.
Concrete made from the hillside sand was made illegal by Haiti's government after thousands of homes made of the material fell in the Jan. 12 earthquake, but it is still used.Lochard said the bodies of two children — an 11-month-old and a 2-year-old — were found drowned elsewhere in the capital.Two more people were killed when mud slid into an quake-refuge camp in Carrefour, farther along the same western ridge. An AP Television News journalist who reached the camp Monday said dozens of families were repairing their tarps. The rocky dirt under other post-quake settlements, home to an estimated 1.3 million people, turned into spongy mud and then lakes.Lochard had no information about the three people reported as missing.

Residents along the ridge said there had been other fatal, unreported mudslides in the last week.Aid groups and officials overseeing Haiti's post-earthquake reconstruction have been on guard for heavy rains since the Jan. 12 disaster. HANOI (AFP) – The death toll from floods caused by heavy rain in central Vietnam rose to 32 on Monday, with an unknown number missing after a bus became submerged, authorities said.Officials said most of the deaths were in the provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh.More than 150,000 homes were under water after flooding in the two provinces as well as adjacent Quang Binh, officials said.Local media showed pictures of residents poking heads or hands through the tile roofs of houses surrounded by water.Some areas looked like inland seas, which rescuers navigated in boats, while television pictures showed transport trucks ploughing through flooded roads.Police officers from Nghi Xuan district in Ha Tinh said the bus passengers disappeared after floodwaters on the main north-south highway submerged the vehicle.We guess there were about 30 people on the bus, and we have rescued 17, said one policeman, who declined to be named.Another officer reached later was more vague, saying it was unclear how many people were on board and how many had still not been found.We have mobilised a big number of our force to join the search, using boats and anything we have, said the second officer.One passenger, Luong Van Thanh, was quoted by the VnExpress news website as saying the travellers were asleep when they felt the bus topple into the water.

Some of the passengers broke the window and crawled out. I am lucky to be alive because I can swim, Thanh said.He added that the bus driver was rescued but fainted many times and would not talk to anybody after the accident, which happened where national Highway 1A passes between a river and rice fields.The state Vietnam News reported water one-metre (3.3 feet) deep on the highway.The mid-sized bus had a capacity of about 36 and was making a long journey between the Central Highlands region and the northern coastal province of Nam Dinh, police said.One of the affected provinces, Quang Binh, was particularly struggling as it was already affected by flooding earlier this month that left at least 64 people dead in the centre of the country.Rain has eased Monday but water is receding slowly. Vietnam regularly suffers from tropical storms and flooding at this time of year. The country is finding greater intensity of floods, greater intensity of droughts, the World Bank's vice-president for sustainable development, Inger Andersen, told AFP during an interview Monday in Vietnam. Andersen, who is on an Asian tour, said climate change was the biggest sustainable development challenge facing Vietnam.
Managing floods and droughts... becomes absolutely key to mitigating against climatic shocks and climatic events, she said. Forecasters said Super Typhoon Megi, which killed at least one person when it struck the northern Philippines on Monday, was also likely to affect Vietnam.

Flooding caused by heavy rain kills 43 in Benin

COTONOU, Benin – The U.N.'s humanitarian agency says flooding in the West African nation of Benin has killed 43 people in the last two weeks.A statement released Saturday by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says flood waters now cover two-thirds of the country's territory. Unseasonably heavy rains have caused the Oueme and Mono rivers to overflow, leaving nearly 100,000people homeless.More than 800 cases of cholera have been reported so far. Aid workers fear the spread of a cholera epidemic in the wake of the floods. The bacterial infection passes through contaminated water and can lead to dehydration and death.

U.S. dollar steadies while Asia stocks inch up

HONG KONG (Reuters) – The U.S. dollar was steady on Tuesday, supported by a pledge from Washington not to devalue its way to recovery, while weakness in the technology sector kept Asian stocks struggling to maintain small gains.U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner affirmed the government's desire for a strong dollar for the first time since February, providing a reason for dealers to take profits on other currencies' strength in the run up to weekend meetings of G20 finance ministers.
However, deep-seated concerns remained among global policymakers that the Federal Reserve's path to quantitative easing will keep the dollar weak and maintain sharp upward pressure on the currencies of other economies, especially in the emerging markets.That means the popular trade of selling dollars to buy emerging market equities and commodities is still in play.The reasons for the dollar being weaker, principally that move toward QE, are still very valid, so any pullbacks are not going to be enormous, said Gregg Gibbs, currency strategist with Royal Bank of Scotland in Sydney.The euro was at $1.3935, down slightly from late in New York on Monday. JERUSALEM – Gaza's Hamas rulers have obtained anti-aircraft missiles, Israel's prime minister said Monday, in a potentially game-changing development that could threaten the Israeli air force's ability to strike at the Islamic militant group.Israeli aircraft have long dominated the skies over Gaza, striking suspected Hamas military installations and assassinating dozens of wanted militants. The Israeli air force played a key role in a fierce three-week offensive in Gaza early last year, which began with airstrikes that killed hundreds of Hamas fighters. The air raids also destroyed vast amounts of infrastructure and killed hundreds of civilians.Speaking to his Likud Party, Netanyahu disclosed that Israel's aerial freedom has been compromised by the new weaponry, presumably smuggled into Gaza through tunnels connected to neighboring Egypt. He said any future peace agreement would have to include security arrangements to deal with the threat.Israel believes that despite its military offensive and Egypt's stated goal of halting arms smuggling, Hamas has managed to restock its arsenal with longer-range missiles that can strike the heart of Israel.Netanyahu's assessment was the first time an Israeli official has openly said Hamas also possesses anti-aircraft weaponry, though intelligence officials have privately suspected that was the case.The security problem is not just the new rockets that will enter the area and will threaten city centers. Security officials said they have long assumed Hamas has smuggled in Russian-made Strela anti-aircraft missiles, presumably supplied by Iran. US, Israel list Iran's nuclear drive as a top concern

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States and Israel on Monday listed Iran's nuclear ambitions as a top concern, as they held another round of talks in their twice-yearly strategic dialogue.US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon held the talks in Washington about common strategic concerns, including Iran and the Arab-Israeli peace process.While today's strategic dialogue covered many subjects, it is clear that Iran is among the greatest challenges we face today in the Middle East, the two said in a joint statement.Iran's continued noncompliance with its international obligations related to its nuclear program, as well as its continued support for terrorist entities, are of grave concern to our two countries and the entire international community, the statement said.Continued efforts by the international community to address Iran's actions through both pressure and engagement are critical to changing Iran's strategic calculus and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

The United States spearheaded international efforts to impose a fourth round of UN Security Council sanctions in June, sanctions it says are aimed at bringing Iran back to the negotiating table to discuss its nuclear program.Neither Israel nor the United States has ruled out military strikes in a bid to make Iran comply with international demands to halt its uranium enrichment program.Washington and Tel Aviv fear the program masks a drive to build a nuclear bomb, but Iran denies the charge, saying its program is for peaceful purposes.The United States and Israel are committed to working together to enhance regional security and stability, the statement added.The present discussions helped identify ways to improve our already strong cooperation in this regard for the benefit of all in the region, it said.The United States and Israel also reemphasized their commitment to the pursuit of lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and between Israel and all of its neighbors,it added.

DEAUVILLE, France – Russia sought to use a summit starting Monday to cement a greater role in Europe's security and foreign policy — a shift that France and Germany embrace but that's tougher to sell to the rest of the long-divided continent.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he wanted a worthy global response to his entreaties for a new security deal with Europe as he headed into two days of meetings with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in this French beach resort.With terrorist threats, concerns about Iran's nuclear program and the war in Afghanistan high in European governments' minds, security emerged as the key theme of this week's summit.The leaders of the three European powers dined on Deauville's boardwalk Monday night before heading into talks Tuesday morning looking at Russia's improving though still imperfect relations with NATO, and deadlocked efforts to improve ties with the 27-nation European Union. They're also likely to confront frozen conflicts on Russia's periphery that have held back broader cooperation with the West.Sarkozy summoned his Russian and German counterparts in part to prepare for France's leadership of the Group of 20 leading global economies.Moscow is also looking to create a Russia-EU committee on foreign policy and security, according to the Kremlin, and to build a democratic space of equal and indivisible security in the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasia region.One example of potential cooperation: Russian interest in buying French Mistral-class warships. MOSCOW – President Dmitry Medvedev bestowed the country's highest state honor Monday on the Russian sleeper agents deported from the United States as part of the countries' biggest spy swap since the Cold War, the Interfax news agency reported.The awards were handed out at a Kremlin ceremony less than four months after the exchange, the agency quoted Medvedev spokeswoman Natalya Timakova as saying. No other details on the ceremony were available and Kremlin spokespeople were not immediately reachable.In June, 10 Russian agents who infiltrated suburban America were deported in exchange for four people convicted in Russia of spying for the West.The spies received a hero's welcome in Russia, with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin leading them in a patriotic singalong in July.The most famous of the agents, Anna Chapman, visited the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan this month for the launch of a Russian spaceship, fueling her celebrity in Russia and abroad.Chapman was in Baikonur ostensibly as the new celebrity face of a Moscow bank.

FondServisBank, which works with Russian companies in the aerospace industry, said it had hired Chapman to bring innovation to its information technologies.It did not escape Russians' attention that the initials of the bank, FSB, are the same as Russia's main spy agency.Although Russia has now reportedly given the spies the country's top state honor, the U.S. court complaint against the flame-haired Chapman and her alleged cohorts described their many spying blunders, leading to some embarrassing coverage for Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service in the Western press.

Putin, who served as a spy in East Germany before going into politics, said in July that he had met with the spies to celebrate their return and warned that the traitors who exposed them could end up in a ditch.Russia and the United States have both said the spy scandal would not interfere with the improving tone in their relations.
