The IDF is an instrument in the hands of God
Jesus supports the IDF and he wants his believers to be the best soldiers they can be.
That was the message conveyed by members of the local Messianic Jewish community via sacred texts, prayer and talks, to a group of 18-year-olds who took part this week in a premilitary program called Netsor.I am a soldier of God, said Boris, an intense redhead accepted to an elite combat unit, who is one of the 28 young men and women who participated in Netsor.I will do my best during my service in the IDF to serve God spiritually and physically. Not for the sake of state authorities but for the sake of God and Jesus,added Boris, as we sat in the dining room of a guest house that overlooks Lake Kinneret on Wednesday.Not far from here, according to Christian tradition, Jesus walked on water, healed the sick and preached. Now, nearly two millennia later, young believers, as they call themselves, convinced they are walking in Jesus's footsteps, hope to become the next fighter pilots, reconnaissance soldiers, paratroopers, tank commanders and sailors.Some 150 highly motivated believers will join the IDF this year. Many of them will serve in combat units. Some of them have been through Netsor's week of mental and spiritual preparation offered by the Messianic community. Netsor is a Hebrew word that means to guard or to stand vigilant.The return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel with the establishment of the State of Israel brought with it a small but growing group of Messianic Jews, numbering today between 10,000 and 15,000. These Christians celebrate their own version of Jewish holidays such as Pessah and Succot and set aside Friday night and Saturday as a day of rest.

But they also believe that Jesus is the messiah and that he is the only path to redemption. Messianic Jews, who distance themselves from the more in-your-face proselytizing tactics of Jews for Jesus, are nevertheless very open about their beliefs, including their conviction that traditional Jewish faith is not sufficient for redemption.Due to their religious beliefs, Messianic Jews have been subjected over the years to physical attacks and discrimination, including in the IDF.M., a platoon commander in an elite demolition unit who is one of the founders of Netsor, asked The Jerusalem Post to leave out identifiable personal details of individuals who agreed to be interviewed out of concern that they would be singled out and blackballed by antagonistic elements with connections in the army.In the end, we believe that God opens and closes doors,said M. And if he does not want someone to advance in the IDF it won't happen. But we don't want to make any mistakes that will hurt someone's IDF career.For Messianic Jews, military service in the IDF is not only a mandatory civil duty, it is a religious obligation. Colossians (3:22,23) teaches that one must excel as a faithful servant of one's superiors, not for personal aggrandizement but to serve God.The group's interpretation of these texts, combined with a strong religious faith, transform them into soldiers of God determined to do his will during their stint in the army of the Jewish state.Other verses, such as the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew, 5-7), which some Christians interpret as Jesus's support for pacifism, are seen by Messianic Jews as an obligation to love one's enemies while fighting and killing them.I hate what Palestinian terrorists do, therefore I will do anything, including kill, if necessary, to stop them, said Tzvi, an educator and counselor at Netsor. Diplomacy involves an element of political manipulation - sometimes even psychological warfare. We're now witnessing this in the US-Israel relationship.The Obama administration has made a strategic decision to pressure Israel pointedly, relentlessly and publicly, while, for now at least, asking little of the Palestinians. The diversionary issue employed in this campaign is housing construction over the Green Line.Washington cannot realistically think that Israel is going to knuckle under and stop building within strategic settlement blocs, or in post-'67 Jerusalem. So it appears that the administration is engaging in confrontation for the sake of confrontation. The object? To gain credibility with the Arab world in the belief it will give them an incentive to make peace.It's the same failed approach pursued by practically every administration since 1967 - only on hyper-drive. And this time, it's characterized by manipulatively overplaying the chasm in the US-Israel relationship.Thus US Defense Secretary Robert Gates ostentatiously warns against an Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear bomb-making facilities on the grounds that it would undermine American interests. Yet, as the clock ticks, Washington still hasn't quite figured out how to engage the mullahs and talk them out of building a bomb.The manipulation comes in various forms: word from the State Department that talk of a cut in US aid to Israel over the settlement controversy is premature; stories leaked to Israeli pundits sympathetic to the administration's line - for example, that George Mitchell will be packing binding timetables requiring Israeli concessions when next he arrives in our region. Or claims that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Barack Obama are headed for a collision.To heighten the sense of crisis, one newspaper here sympathetic to the administration's approach claims that the IDF is poised to evacuate all unauthorized West Bank outposts in one 24-hour blitz. The story is erroneous.Further leaks claim that the Americans are planning an international peace conference which will find Israel isolated, facing the moderate Arab world, an unsympathetic Europe and an irritated administration. We're told that tensions between Washington and Jerusalem are so bad that the White House will send a friendly face (Dennis Ross) to accompany other ostensibly less sympathetic US officials.

IN RESPONSE, Israel engages in its own, clumsy manipulation.

Responding to implicit threats of a cut in military aid, the IDF is said to be brainstorming for the day when it will tell Washington what it can do with its $3 billion, because Israel will purchase what it needs to survive from Vladimir Putin's Russia.And when our new ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, held his first overview meeting at the State Department, it was Israeli officials who leaked the false story that he had been summoned to hear US protests over Jewish housing construction in east Jerusalem.The Netanyahu government is wrong to think that exacerbating the perception of a crisis in US-Israel relations is the wisest method of setting "red lines" for future negotiations with the Palestinians. There must be better ways to point out that the Shepherd Hotel is located in the geographically vital Sheikh Jarrah section of the capital, a couple of bus stops from Hebrew University. Nor is playing up bilateral tensions a smart way to encourage the pro-Israel community, already signaling uneasiness over White House tactics, to speak out.IT'S TOO bad that the Obama administration, which came to Washington promising change, is going down the old, demonstrably counter-productive road of its predecessors. It too fundamentally misreads the source of Arab reluctance to make peace with Israel.Washington acts as if both sides want the same thing: coexistence. But the Arabs still reject the right of a Jewish state to live anywhere in their midst; still favor demographically inundating Israel with Palestinian refugees and millions of their descendents; and still insist Israel pull back to the hard-to-defend 1949 Armistice Lines.Under these circumstances, the administration's one-sided pressure on Israel, and its tepid response to Netanyahu's historic Bar-Ilan speech, entrenches Arab intransigence.It's an even bigger shame that the administration is expending so much energy on an approach that actually reduces the prospects of a breakthrough - and that in so doing, it is employing manipulative tactics that make mainstream Israelis even more fearful of taking risks for peace.jpost

Twenty five towns in the United States, from Massachusetts to Oregon, bear the name of Jerusalem – Salem. This is a reflection of the unique bonds that exist between the USA – since the 17th century Pilgrims and the Founding Fathers – and the Jewish capital, land, history and religion.The US Congress – the most authentic representative of the American People – has passed a series of bills and resolutions reaffirming the role of Jerusalem as the indivisible capital of the Jewish State and the appropriate site for the US embassy in Israel. US constituents and their representatives on Capitol Hill are aware that 3,000 years before President Obama entered the White House, and 2,770 years before the US gained its independence, King David entered the City of Jerusalem – the Heart of the Jewish People. However, notwithstanding his speech at the 2009 AIPAC Conference, Obama wishes to repartition Jerusalem, to prohibit free Jewish construction and entice Arab construction there. Obama does not recognize pre-1967 Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish State.In 1949, at the end of the War of Independence, the US Administration, Europe and the UN exerted brutal pressure on Prime Minister Ben Gurion to refrain from declaring Jerusalem as the capital, to accept the internationalization of the city, and to abstain from establishing facts on the ground. They also leaned on Israel to end the occupation of the Negev and absorb and compensate the 1948 Arab refugees.Ben Gurion's response was immediate and appropriate. He declared Jerusalem the capital of the Jewish State, relocated government departments and agencies to Jerusalem, expanded construction all the way to the ceasefire lines, directed a massive number of Olim (immigrants) to Jerusalem and upgraded the transportation infrastructure to the city. Ben Gurion's determination and defiance clarified to the US that neither Jerusalem nor the Negev was subject to negotiation. It accorded Jerusalem the space required for security and development for the next generation.In 1967, the US Administration and the international community threatened Prime Minister Eshkol that the reunification of Jerusalem, and any construction beyond the 1949 ceasefire line, would undermine severely Israel's global standing. Eshkol replied firmly by annexing the Old City, the eastern suburbs and substantial land reserves and built the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood (beyond the ceasefire lines.)In 1970-1972, Prime Minister Golda Meir defied the (Secretary of State) Rogers Plan, which called for Israel's retreat to the pre-1967 lines and for the transfer of the Old City to the auspices of the three religions. She laid the groundwork for a series of satellite neighborhoods around Jerusalem (beyond the Green Line): Neve Ya'akov, Gilo, Ramot Alon and French Hill. These neighborhoods provided Jerusalem with the land required for development until today.

Dramatic expansion needed

In 2009, President Obama is exerting psychological pressure on Israel to repartition Jerusalem, which would rob the city of essential land reserves. This land constitutes the prerequisite for the dramatic enhancement of Jerusalem's transportation, residential and industrial infrastructures, which are critical for the transformation of Jerusalem from a city of net Jewish emigration to a city of net Jewish immigration.
An appropriate fast-track-response to Obama – which would be aimed at attracting entrepreneurs, job-creation, affordable housing, as well as providing Jerusalem with the developmental space for future generations should include:Upgrading Begin Road to a Jerusalem Loop,Expanding freeways (to Jerusalem) 1 and 443 ,Building freeway 45 to the coastal plain ,Fast railroad to Jerusalem ,Completion of light rail system in Jerusalem ,Construction of an international airport ,Traditional and high-tech industrial zones ,Residential construction zones ,Fast roads connecting new zones.

Such dramatic enhancement of infrastructure requires an equally dramatic expansion of Jerusalem's city limit: eastward to the Dead Sea, Herodion and Mt. Ba'al Hazor, westward to Modi'in and Kirayt Sefer and southward to Beitar Ilit and Gush Etzion.The battle over Jerusalem necessitates that the Jewish State join forces with the US public and its representatives in the House and Senate. This is the time to resurrect the 1999 initiative – which was co-sponsored by 84 Senators – to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem. This is the time to encourage Israel's friends on the Hill, and especially the Chairmen of the Congressional and Senatorial campaign committees, to revisit bills and resolutions, which highlighted Jerusalem's indivisibility as the capital of Israel.Jerusalem's growth requires - as it did during Ben Gurion's, Eshkol's and Golda's terms – a defiance of the US Administration. On the other hand, succumbing to Obama's pressure would exacerbate Jewish emigration from Jerusalem, subjecting the Jewish capital to its worst security and demographic threats since 1967.gamla

We won't accept half solutions based on settling the refugees in the countries they currently reside in, or any other compromise based on what is referred to as a just solution for the refugee problem. Just this week I was talking to a high level contact who had just talked with a member of the Homeland Security Dept. They revealed to him that Obama is planning to nationalize every security force that currently guards any military structure and all 800,000 Government buildings.Currently these buildings and facilities have been guarded by private security companies…..not when Obama is through.This will immediately put thousands of security companies and hundreds of thousands of workers out of business.Hundreds of thousands more jobs of private security companies will be gone but even more chilling, Obama will have a national police force, peppered through out the country, in every city where there are any Government buildings or military sites of any kind. The question every American, liberal, conservative, black or white should be asking is WHY does Obama plan to have a national police and security force? Why is he continuing to break into the private banking sector, business sector and now security sector? Is Dr. Alan Keys right? He has said on and off my radio show that Obama will declare martial law after a created crises, thus ending the next cycle of elections and staying in control? My source also with a top military service background said that Obama is marching forward to create a Totalitarianism regime. He predicted that first, Obama will establish a national police/security force then he will take our guns. My comment at this stage is……Obama may TRY TO TAKE OUR GUNS!!!

Lets see……a national security force and now BOOK DELETIONS?

Also my same source shared with me the order that came from an Obama official last week to Amazon to delete 4 books, all on totalitarianism. You may remember Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. They and two other related books were all deleted, so that even if people had already bought them they would have their books disappear. Isn’t that a form of stealing folks? It is as if you went out and bought a room full of furniture and a thug broke in and ripped your couch and love seat to shreds. Why did Obama want books talking about Totalitarianism threats deleted? Could it be he wants people to know less of what he is up to? You decide. Not surprisingly, Amazon said deleting the books was a mistake though shockingly they aren’t about to say who gave the order from Obama’s administration.He has already started demonizing conservative patriots in the U.S. Last April we saw Homeland Security release a report that warned of many dangerous and monstrous Americans to watch carefully. Anyone that is a returning Vet, pro life, pro 2nd amendment, pro sovereignty, fearful of communistic regimes, and pro Government accountability are already in the suspected cross hairs of being a domestic terrorist. I must be the anti Christ with these new rules! Remember, when changing a culture into a totalitarian regime you must create enemies of those who would defend and fight for freedom. Is it clear yet why Obama and his administration came out so quickly behind Manuel Zelaya who was ousted by the Honduran Supreme Court and congress? Zelaya was tied directly to massive voter fraud, trying to keep in power as Ortega did, trying to violate their very constitution, law and many other suspected violations.Another one of my regular guests with extensive Honduran roots, property and business there said there is legitimate evidence also linking Zelaya with massive drug traffic coming in through his ranch from Venezuela. The Hondurans did only what was proper and necessary for their countries laws and freedom. How is it that Obama so quickly sided with the totalitarian, Chavez clone? Could it be that Zelaya reflects Obama’s real world view….communist? My question to anyone in the military, police or security force that is taken over by Obama, will you turn on the American people? Will you blindly obey as forces did when Hitler took over? Will you allow yourselves to be the tools to take our guns? Lisbon II: should we really bend over?

The Irish political parties seem to be set on advising the Irish people to go begging to the EU to be please let in. The number of politicians and public figures who have spoken out recently about the need to be part of Europe has multiplied at an astonishing rate. All and sundry seem to predict economic hell & damnation if we reject the Lisbon treaty a second time.Earlier this week Tony Killeen the Junior Agriculture Minister noted:that a second rejection of the Lisbon Treaty would have serious consequences for Irish agriculture and other business sectors. He added that a Yes vote would deliver increased access to European Markets.

He goes on to say that:Ireland is a small open economy which exports over 80% of every product and service it produces. Through our membership of the EU and the creation of the single market Irish business can now sell all of its goods and services to 486 million customers throughout the EU on an equal footing to any other company in the EU. In the past 10 years Irish companies have doubled their exports into EU member states from EUR44 billion to EUR87billion. However, the European single market is not yet fully realised particularly in the area of services. A yes vote on the Lisbon Reform Treaty would result in the single market project becoming more efficient and Irish business securing further business opportunities.

One can deduct several points form these statements:

A 2nd no-vote would limit our ability to sell into other EU countries.
A 2nd no-vote will quite possibly negatively affect the grants we currently receive from the EU. Because we (possibly) might make more money from voting yes for Lisbon we should let the EU also control our political & legislative systems. All this in the end seems to evolve around the importance of making or getting money. Now while I am all in favour of making money (being an entrepreneur at heart) I also have certainly principles and standards. And I expect others to have the same. In the words of John C. Mellencamp: you’ve got to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Now if I am a member of what is supposed to be a democratically ruled club and when we vote for a significant change in the way the club is run, does the threat from other members that I will be punished if I vote different than them not throw that democracy right out of the window? Really this is all about selling out our principles & autonomy for money, plain and simple. Most of the Celtic Tiger economy was funded by EU money, most of our farming sector has been atificially kept alive by massive agricultural grants etc. And yes, the establishment of the EU in it’s current form has done wonders about establishing a pan-european free market. However while the EU makes perfect sense as an economic and trading entity I do not think it should be allowed to extend into legislative and political areas. There is simply no need.

The EU as a legislative body will not benefit anybody but the bureaucrats in charge of the various departments, ministeries and workgroups etc. There will be rule making for the sake of rule making and the executive bodies will be far removed and out of touch with the people and issues they are supposed to regulate. I am of the opinion that a Dublin based government has a hard enough time managing issues important to the area where I live so I can’t see how a governing body based in Brussels could do any better.The fact is that the EU is fine the way it is now. There is no (real) need to expand the powers of the EU government and limit those of the individual national governments.

In my previous article Brave new world for reticent fools, I mentioned that the book Union Now by Clarence K. Streit, was published in 1939, as a proposal to unite the world’s leading democratic nations into a federal union. A concise edition of Union Now was published in 1940. And in 1961, the book Freedom’s Frontier — Atlantic Union Now by Clarence K. Streit was published, in the light of the world changes since 1939 – Chapter 10 is entitled, Union Now, the U.N. and World Government.The book Union Now is where the Bretton Woods Conference, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the European Union and a whole host of other initiatives seem to have sprung from. This begs the question, how many leading lights in politics, commerce, economics, finance, military, media, and science can be linked to the Streit Council and the plans for world government proposed by Clarence Streit? According to information found on the web, the Streit Council only has up to eight employees, but quite a few board members and other associates. The current president of the Streit Council is Dr. Richard C. Henry.The official website of the Streit Council states, The world’s established democracies still have — as when Union Now was published — the greatest power and influence in the world when working together. As citizens of these democracies we continue to bear great responsibilities: to strengthen our joint institutions and thus stabilize the international system — to promote common human concerns more effectively and consistently, at both regional and global levels.And that, Since C. K. Streit wrote Union Now, the established democracies have indeed developed substantial institutions for managing their common affairs and meeting their responsibilities in the world at large. The post-war U.S. strategy of integrating an initial group of democratic countries led, as we know, to the institutionalization of the Atlantic Alliance through NATO and its Parliamentary Assembly, and to support for other emerging inter-democracy institutions, such as the OECD, EU, International Energy Agency, G8, and others. These institutions, in keeping with the Union Now concept, worked as a magnet, attracting other countries to democratize and join.In the 2007 autumn issue of the Streit Council journal Freedom and Union, Jim Costa, a member of the US Congress and also a member of the Transatlantic Policy Network (TPN) advisory group, affirmed the target date of 2015 for the creation of a Transatlantic Common Market. The TPN is a non-governmental organisation with headquarters in Washington and Brussels and is advised by the bi-partisan congressional TPN policy group, chaired by Senator Robert Bennett.

Jim Costa said that the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC) is tasked with creating the Transatlantic Common Market regulatory infrastructure. The infrastructure would not require congressional approval, like a new free-trade agreement would.Writing in the same issue of Freedom and Union, Senator Robert Bennett also confirmed that what has become known as the Merkel initiative would allow the Transatlantic Economic Council to integrate and harmonize administrative rules and regulations between the U.S. and the EU in a very quiet way, without introducing a new free trade agreement to Congress.Senator Bennett seems to be suggesting that any of the regulatory changes resulting from the process of integration with the EU will not be posted in the Federal Register or submitted to Congress as new free-trade agreements or as modifications to existing trade agreements.In addition to Senator Bennett, the advisers to the Transatlantic Policy Network include the following: Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS), former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) and former Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR).

Among the 49 U.S. congressmen on the TPN’s Congressional Group are John Boehner (R-OH), John Dingell (D-MI), Kenny Marchant (R-TX) and F. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI).The TEC appears to be following the plans laid out by C.K. Streit in 1939 and 1961 for the creation of a Transatlantic Union as an international governing body. Here is what
the US Government’s ITA website has to say about the TEC: “Transatlantic Economic Council Works Behind the Scenes to Unleash the Potential of the Transatlantic Economy. Improving the world’s largest and most dynamic economic relationship through removal of non-tariff and regulatory impediments is the goal for the council.The TEC is a political body to oversee and accelerate government-to-government integration between the European Union and the United States of America. Here is the text of the TEC agreement signed by George W. Bush, Angela Merkel, and Jose Manuel Barroso at a Whitehouse summit in April 2007.On September 9, 2008, The Streit Council (with its supposedly small workforce) and the National Press Club co-sponsored a press conference on The Urgency of a Union of Europe With America.The following day, September 10, 2008, the Streit Council and the Council on Foreign Relations co-organised a round-table discussion on The Case for a Union of the West.In the fall 2007 issue of the Streit Council journal Freedom and Union, World Bank economist Domenec Ruiz Devesa acknowledged that transatlantic economic integration, though important in itself, is not the end.He continued, economic integration must and will lead to political integration, since an integrated market requires common institutions producing common rules to govern it.

Currency Crisis - The Yuan to go Global and soon! Gold will Rise!

Suddenly the pressure from China to change the world’s monetary order is pressing. At the G-8 China asked for the forum to debate proposals for a new global reserve currency! They were largely ignored! China’s rising presence in the global economy [$2 trillion reserves now] and the threatening weakness of the $ is prompting China to act in this way and with speed. Not only the Chinese but the French, Finance Minister and Central Bank President called for greater currency stability and a system to avoid piling up currency reserves as we see with the $. It is clear that more and more countries are objecting to the debasement of the U.S. $ through Trade deficits and Quantitative Easing.In March, the People’s Bank of China Governor, Zhou Xiaochuan's proposed that the Special Drawing Right, a synthetic currency, [but one aimed at being a basket of the world’s most traded currencies] be used as an international reserve currency that's delinked from sovereign nations. The People's Bank of China reiterated this idea in its 2008 review. It said that,the IMF should expand the functions of its unit of account, Special Drawing Rights.The new reserve currency should be managed by the I.M.F., as well as for closer international supervision and scrutiny of overly loose U.S. financial and monetary policies. Any opposition to these proposals brings much uncertainty to the globe’s monetary system, a climate in which gold will rise strongly.Right now central bankers across the world are renewing the gold debate, should they hold more gold in the light of the dangers to the global monetary system? Previous Chinese proposals on this subject were not welcomed at either the I.M.F. or in member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Because the G-8 did not entertain the Chinese proposal and it essentially reaffirmed the US $’s status as a reserve currency, China is likely to act unilaterally on the matter, much to the detriment of stability in currency markets and future cooperation in global monetary reform.The boldness of these moves implies a sense of urgency by the Chinese. We believe that action will be seen on this front soon and suddenly.The possibility of a sudden $ devaluation prior to the end of 2009 will only make the Chinese act more forcefully a large positive for gold!

The Path to a Global Reserve Currency
The Yuan looks as though it will be fast tracked from a protected national currency to an international reserve currency with the first sprint to be completed in 2010. The pace will be dictated by two factors, firstly the pace at which the Chinese dictates and secondly by the I.M.F. schedule for the review of the composition of the S.D.R. in 2010. By that time the Yuan must have a heavy presence in international markets in at least Trade flows.For the Yuan to move in large amounts, eventually as capital, it must be well used internationally and in such volumes that a large capital amounts can move through the currency markets without disturbing the Yuan exchange rate. This means that the Yuan must be readily available in large amounts in all the international markets that China wants to see the Yuan traded in. What does this imply? China must release huge amounts of the Yuan into international markets between now and 2010. This would require following a similar route to the one taken by the U.S. $ from 1971 onwards, which led to the $ being the most sought after international currency. With the U.S. in control of the security of the biggest oil producing area in the world the lands surrounding the Persian Gulf they ensured that oil was priced in the U.S. $. This forced it into the coffers of every nation on earth. While China does not have the same leverage, it does sell the cheapest and most sought after manufactured goods everywhere. As Chinese expertise grows, their goods will take a larger and larger path into international markets. Until the rest of the world earns as little as Chinese workers do, the China advantage will assist in this growing international presence. The threat to the $ is huge, because eventually in almost every transaction where the Yuan will be used, it will replace the U.S. $. This will leave a growing amount of the U.S. $ with nowhere to go but home. If this happens, forget rising interest rates, even in the face of inflation?But will they price Chinese goods in the Yuan and change their pricing from the U.S. $? Yes, tentative steps are already being taken in this regard: - Currency Swaps: China has issued large tranches of Yuan Swaps to a few countries, including South America. This allows them to pay for Chinese goods in the Yuan, while China can add foreign currencies such as the Reis to their foreign exchange reserves. Like a movie being tested in a country town, the next step will be to go global. Loans to foreign banks in Yuan: The main exit point for goods from China is via Hong Kong. Such loans are now being issued to Honk Kong Banks, where they can be closely monitored from China. Likewise these are trial runs to remove teething problems. China uses Yuan through Hong Kong - for Trade only [at present].

Foreign banks will be able to buy or borrow Yuan from Chinese mainland lenders for the first time to settle trade in Hong Kong and Macau under a pilot scheme set up by the P.B.O.C. This is a prime step in the international use of the Yuan. The People's Bank of China, fill permit foreign banks to settle imports and exports in Yuan in Hong Kong and Macau and will allow them to buy Chinese currency from mainland banks within certain limits. The rules make clear that China will be checking to ensure that banks and companies do not try to use the pilot program to get round the country's capital controls. Exporters will be allowed to keep their Yuan earnings outside China. Chinese banks will also be allowed gradually to extend trade finance in Yuan to overseas companies, the PBOC said. The program will initially be piloted by about 440 firms in Shanghai and the southern province of Guangdong.
Chinese export firms involved in the trial will continue to qualify for export tax refunds.Yes, this will increase the pressure on the Yuan to appreciate, but as we said above, China wants the Yuan to be an international currency by 2010 so it must push a huge quantity of them into foreign markets. This can be made to counter an excessive appreciation if enough Yuan are created. Additionally, we can be sure that in selling / loaning / swapping the Yuan, China will move to desist from accumulating more U.S. dollars than is required for U.S. trade. It will sell the Yuan for the currencies of its Trade partners across the world. This will stabilize or lower the Yuan exchange rate against these currencies, while placing some downward pressure on the U.S. $ as its global reserve currency role wanes.Eventually we expect even O.P.E.C. to accept Yuan in payment of oil! The downward pressure on the $ is inevitable and we believe such a depreciation has been accepted by the Chinese. The moves to resurrect the S.D.R. are part of this acceptance and an attempt to avoid the $’s depreciation. There will simply be far more U.S. dollars internationally than are needed, so the only way to avoid suffering from the $’s fall is to diversify, via the S.D.R. into other currencies. If China can replace the U.S. $ with newly composed S.D.R.’s they can protect the buying power of their huge [$1.95 trillion] reserves, at least to some extent! What will the U.S. do in the face of this? Will it act defensively ahead of this? Is a devaluation of the U.S. $ about to happen? What will be the impact on the gold market and price? Will governments do something about gold ownership? We appear to be just ahead of major global currency market moves? The U.S. $ in the near-term? / The affect on the Gold price and Markets!/ Will Yuan be available for Capital transactions?

WHO says pandemic gaining speed, sees winter risks JULY 24,09

It remains a top priority to determine which groups of people are at highest risk of serious disease so steps to best protect them can be taken,it said, estimating that vaccine manufacturers should have H1N1 shots ready soon.Manufacturers are expected to have vaccines for use around September. A number of companies are working on the pandemic vaccine production and have different timelines,the statement on the WHO website read.About 800 people have died from the new virus whose fast international transmission caused the WHO to declare in June that a flu pandemic is under way. But for most patients, H1N1 is causing mild and manageable symptoms.For the moment we haven't seen any changes in the behaviour of the virus, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said earlier on Friday, while warning the virus could change as it circulates, especially in flu-conducive wintry conditions.We do have to be aware that there could be changes and we have to be prepared for those,he told a Geneva news briefing.

VACCINE SUPPLIES

At least 50 governments have placed orders or are currently negotiating with pharmaceutical companies to secure supplies of H1N1 vaccines, which are still being developed.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is helping companies design ways to quickly test experimental versions of pandemic shots, and the European Medicines Agency is aiming to approve H1N1 vaccines before the onset of northern hemisphere winter, the traditional flu season in Europe.The WHO is trying to ensure that health workers in poor countries can be vaccinated so hospitals can stay open if the flu becomes more debilitating as it spreads. Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline have promised to donate 150 million doses to this aim to date.Other leading flu vaccine makers include Novartis, Baxter, and Solvay.Clinical trials of H1N1 shots will give a better idea of the number of doses required for a person to be immunised, as well as the quantity of active principle (antigen) needed in each vaccine dose,the WHO said.

The FED has changed enormously in the past nine months. Between last September and now, Reserve Bank credit has gone up 135 percent. Will the FED change back to what it used to be? Does it have a workable exit strategy? Very, very doubtful.The FED used to manage monetary policy, and that was about all. Today it’s engaged in fiscal actions that have to do with the government’s debts. The two main ones are that it is buying $300 billion of U.S. Treasuries and it is buying $1.25 trillion of mortgage-backed and agency debts.The FED traditionally bought U.S. debt, but never in such volume. The government deficits are so large that the FED will probably eventually announce one or more new programs to buy U.S. debt. At a minimum, these deficits ensure that the FED will not be soon selling what it now is in the midst of buying. No exit here.The FED never bought mortgage-backed securities as part of its permanent portfolio. Now it is. It is buying these securities from housing-related government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks.Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are now wards of the state. The FED’s support of them and the housing markets is a fiscal action. The FED is more deeply engaged with the government than ever before.The FED is buying long-term bonds from these agencies. It claims that interest-rate risk is not an issue:The market valuation of agency MBS can fluctuate over time based on the interest rate environment; however, the Federal Reserve’s exposure to interest rate risk is mitigated by the conservative, buy and hold investment strategy of the agency MBS purchase program.

If the FED holds these securities to maturity (which is 15 to 30 years hence), it will not be selling these bonds so as to disengage from the government and so as to reduce its credits. It will then have to find other ways to defuse the inflationary potential of that credit such as paying higher interest on reserves. No matter what it does, it will not be getting back to what it used to be anytime soon. The FED’s engagement with government is far from temporary. No exit here.(If the FED, contrary to what it has stated, intends to sell these securities before they mature, then it certainly faces interest-rate risk. Even if it does not sell these securities, it faces interest-rate risk (contrary to what it says) because the value of the bonds will sink if interest rates rise.)In the past nine months, the U.S. Treasury made very large deposits at the FED. These restrained the growth in the monetary base, other things equal. But they also provided the Treasury a degree of control over the FED that is new. This Supplementary Financing Program also engaged the FED with the government.Treasury deposits have been run down from a peak $620 billion last November to $226 billion now. The monetary base rose over $235 billion as a result.

The more that the FED becomes engaged in the government’s fiscal policies and debt management, and the more that the FED depends on Treasury financing, the greater the risk that the FED is unable to disengage from the government. The greater becomes the risk that it will continue and expand its credit activities at the government’s behest or pressure. The greater become the risks of high inflation or even hyperinflation. The latter can occur through a loss in confidence among Americans or other holders of dollar denominated bonds that the FED has the situation under control.Or suppose that another recession starts up, not that this one has yet ended, or that this one has a feeble recovery followed by a new dip. The FED would be unable to decrease its balance sheet. Government deficits would rise, and the FED would monetize some of the debt. No exit here.So far, the government and the FED have not provided a workable exit program for the FED. Such a program would probably require the Congress to take the FED off the hook by absorbing some of its loans. This is not impossible but it’s improbable in the visible future. The FED is supporting the GSEs for Congress and supporting the Treasury’s financing of deficits made in Congress. The Congress can play at criticizing the FED all day long, but the FED is supporting the fiscal policies of the Congress; and it will probably be doing that for a long time to come. Congress prefers that to having the problems on its books.

No exit means a persistently higher risk of inflation and worse.

The FED has created a huge monetary base with long-run potential to be loaned into the economy. This is a situation that it cannot allow to happen without disastrous consequences. Bank reserves are a large component of that monetary base. To sterilize (or neutralize their lending potential), the FED can pay interest on reserves. There is no free lunch here for the FED. It could be doing this for many years to come, during which time it becomes harder for it to handle its monetary actions. Paying interest on bank reserves of $800 billion at 3 percent, say, costs $24 billion a year. The FED ordinarily turns its earnings over to the Treasury. This means that the FED’s earnings will be $24 billion lower (it going to the banks to sterilize their reserves) and the revenues to the government are $24 billion lower.Follow the money: The FED buys mortgage-backed securities. The government ends up giving up $24 billion annually to the FED who pays it to the banks. The present value of this is a very substantial amount of wealth transferred from taxpayers to the banks. Bank stocks will go up in price when the FED starts paying higher interest on reserves, if not sooner.When Congress realizes what’s going on, there is bound to be pressure placed on the FED.The FED changed in several other major ways in the past nine months. It took on from banks what most people think are poor credits via its term auction credit program. They add up to $274 billion. These appear to be frozen on the FED’s balance sheet. There is no apparent exit there either.It extended substantial credit to AIG, and that too is going nowhere fast.Its central bank swaps and commercial paper credits have declined quite a lot. They are still a rather high $224 billion in total. The exit here is real but slow. Another recession would halt and reverse it.
The FED changed its basic nature when it chose to make loans to specific entities, rather than providing general credit to the banking system. It became a fixed income fund. It replaced the capital market. It allocated credit. This too is a kind of fiscal function practiced by governments that wish to control the economy’s financing.

All told, the FED has changed from a largely monetary institution to a monetary and fiscal institution that is linked to the Congress and the Treasury, i.e., to the government. The FED was never completely independent, of course. It was a private-public institution, but one whose activities were mostly monetary (apart from the period of the Accord). Now its activities are more in the public domain, more fiscal, and more governmental. They are more under the influence of government. That has historically been a situation that created higher inflation and sometimes hyperinflation.To my mind, this means that the FED faces very serious problems. The government deficits and the government’s love affair with the GSEs ensure this.But the FED’s problems are our problems, that is, the problems of anyone who holds dollars or dollar-denominated assets. All the risks that the FED faces load onto the value of the dollar.The government is already committed to huge deficits. In several places above, I mentioned the risk of another recession or a further downturn in this one. If that should happen, even if it happens several years from now, the government-FED system will be placed under an impossible strain. That too suggests no exit, because the FED will pump more money rather than allow that doomsday event to occur. However, doomsday will eventually overtake the government and the FED anyway. The dollar amounts of the fiscal and monetary swings are simply getting too large compared to the production in the economy and the tax base. Doomsday may possibly be resolved, when it stares America in the face, by a sharp cutback in government’s size and by a return to a trustworthy currency.

A split between rich and poor nations in the run-up to climate-change talks widened on Thursday.India rejected key scientific findings on global warming, while the European Union called for more action by developing states on greenhouse gas emissions.He dismissed scientists’ predictions that Himalayan glaciers might disappear within 40 years as a result of global warming. We have to get out of the preconceived notion, which is based on western media, and invest our scientific research and other capacities to study Himalayan atmosphere,he said.Science has its limitation. You cannot substitute the knowledge that has been gained by the people living in cold deserts through everyday experience.Mr Ramesh was also clear that India would not take on targets to cut its emissions, even though developed countries are asking only for curbs in the growth of emissions, rather than absolute cuts.His stance was at wide variance with that of Andreas Carlgren, his Swedish counterpart. Sweden holds the European Union’s revolving presidency until a conference in Copenhagen in December at which governments will try to hammer out a successor to the Kyoto protocol on curbing greenhouse emissions – the main provisions of which expire in 2012.Mr Carlgren said in Are, Sweden, that developing countries such as India, China and Brazil must propose more ambitious plans to reduce emissions if they were to receive finance from wealthy nations.Rich and poor countries have been squabbling over the issue of financing for months, imperilling the outcome of the Copenhagen talks. Rich countries have not agreed to provide the funding that poor nations say is necessary to help them cut their emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change. Mr Carlgren went on the offensive on Thursday, saying poorer countries must come up with firm plans to cut emissions before financing will be forthcoming.States such as China and India have produced plans for curbing the growth in their emissions but these have not been formalised within the negotiating process.

Mr Carlgren also criticised rich countries for failing to agree to cut their emissions by the amounts needed. So far, what we have seen from other countries is too low. We expect more from developed countries,he said.But the Swedish environment minister said poor countries must also do more to forge an agreement. We are prepared to put money on the table. But it should also be said that if we don’t see significant reductions that will really deviate from business as usual . . . then there is no money,Mr Carlgren said, singling out China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia.We are also prepared to deliver financing, but we must see that there is something to pay for.India has taken the hardest line in the negotiations so far. Along with China, India refused at the meeting of the Group of Eight industrialised nations this month to sign up to a target of cutting global emissions by half by 2050.The countries were holding out to gain concessions from the west on financing.The claims from Mr Ramesh that Western science was wrong on the question of melting Himalayan glaciers appeared to reinforce Delhi’s recalcitrant stance.Mr Ramesh on Friday reiterated that India would not accept emissions caps to held curb global warming, Bloomberg reported. The world has nothing to fear from India’s development ... An artifical cap is not desirable and not even necessary as we haven’t been responsible for emissions in the first place,he said.Earlier this week, he also challenged Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, over her appeal to India to embrace a low-carbon future and not repeat the mistakes of the developed world in seeking fast industrialisation.The consequences of depleted glaciers – sensitive to rising temperature and humidity – would be dire. Seven of the world’s greatest rivers , including the Ganges and the Yangtze, are fed by the glaciers of the Himalayas and Tibet. They supply water to about 40 per cent of the world’s population.

Water supply is likely to become an increasing national security priority for both India and China as they seek to maintain high economic growth rates and sustain large populations dependent on farming. Some scientists have warned that rivers such as the Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra could become seasonal rivers as a result of global warming.Indians are also fearful of weakening monsoon rains. Some parts of India, including Delhi, the capital, are still waiting anxiously for this year’s rains to come in earnest. A late, or a poor, monsoon would be a drag on economic growth. Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Programme, has described melting glaciers as a canary in the climate-change coal mine, warning that billions of people depend on these natural water storage facilities for drinking water, power generation and agriculture.Mr Ramesh said the rate of retreat of glaciers in the Himalayas varied from a couple of centimetres a year to a couple of metres, but that this was a natural process that had taken place occurred over the centuries. Some were, in fact, growing, he said.The glaciers – estimated by India’s space agency to number about 15,000 – had also been affected by debris and the large number of tourists, he said.

The only reason they’re in our food supply is because government bureaucrats with ties to industry suppressed or manipulated scientific research and deprived consumers of the information they need to make informed choices about whether or not to eat genetically modified foods.Now, the Obama Administration is putting two notorious biotech bullies in charge of food safety! Former Monsanto lobbyist Michael Taylor has been appointed as a senior adviser to the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner on food safety. And, rBGH-using dairy farmer and Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff is rumored to be President Obama’s choice for Under-Secretary of Agriculture for Food Safety. Wolfe spearheaded anti-consumer legislation in Pennsylvania that would have taken away the rights of consumers to know whether their milk and dairy products were contaminated with Monsanto’s (now Eli Lilly’s) genetically engineered Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH).

About Michael Taylor

Michael Taylor is a lawyer who has spent the last few decades moving through the revolving door between the employ of GMO-seed giant Monsanto and the FDA and USDA. Taylor is widely credited with ushering Monsanto’s recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) through the FDA regulatory process and into the milk supply — unlabeled. A Government Accounting Office (GAO) investigated whether Taylor had a conflict of interest and or had engaged in ethical misconduct in the approval of rBGH. The report’s conclusion that there was no wrongdoing conflicted with the 30 pages of evidence that Vermont Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-VT) described as proof that the FDA allowed corporate influence to run rampant in its approval of the drug.Taylor is also responsible for the FDA’s decision to treat genetically modified organisms as substantially equivalent to natural foods and therefore not require any safety studies. The substantially equivalent rule allowed the FDA to ignore evidence that genetically engineered foods, including soy, are in fact very different from natural foods and pose specific health risks.In November 2008, Tom Philpott reported that Taylor was among President-Elect Obama’s team members looking at energy and natural resources agencies, including USDA. In March 2009, President Obama announced the creation of a White House Food Safety Working Group to improve and coordinate the government’s approach to the nationwide food safety crisis. Agri-Pulse reported that Taylor was the leading candidate to staff the White House [food safety] working group.While anti-GMO activists, including the Organic Consumers Association, protested — OCA members sent 13,435 letters to USDA Sec. Tom Vilsack, who co-chairs the Food Safety Working Group with HHS Sec. Sebelius — Taylor laid low. He was nowhere to be found at the White House Food Safety Working Group’s May 13th Listening Session. But, the rumor proved true. On July 7, 2009, the FDA announced that Taylor had joined the agency as senior adviser to the commissioner.

As Philpott describes in a July 8th article, Taylor’s food safety agenda is to shift much more of the burden for funding food-safety operations to the state and local level and to promote HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) systems where the points in a process that pose the most risk are identified and fixed with remedies like ammonia washes and irradiation. Taylor’s approach — putting a few bandaids on an industrialized food system gone wrong — is in direct conflict with organic practices and is likely to unduly burden small producers.Taylor has long been hostile to real food safety. While working as a lobbyist, Taylor authored more than a dozen articles critical of the Delaney Clause, a 1958 federal law prohibiting the introduction of known carcinogens into processed foods, which had long been opposed by Monsanto and other chemical and pesticide companies. When Taylor rejoined the federal government, he continued advocating that Delaney should be overturned. Dennis Wolff is the Secretary of Agriculture for the State of Pennsylvania. Wolff also is a dairy farmer and owns Pen-Col Farms, a 600-acre dairy cattle operation. Wolff has championed agribusiness interests as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture, including banning local dairies from marketing their products as free of Monsanto’s rBGH. Wolff is a member of the Agriculture Technical Advisory Committee to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO has been largely credited with forcing so-called free trade on farmers and consumers around the globe, undermining national sovereignty and food safety. Finally, Wolff was a strong proponent of the ACRE initiative (Agriculture, Communities and Rural Environment), which gives the Pennsylvania state attorney general’s office the authority to sue municipalities over local farm ordinances deemed to exceed state law, depriving communities the right to ban toxic sewage sludge, factory farms, and GMOs.Aside from having absolutely no experience in meat inspection, the chief food safety responsibility of the USDA, Dennis Wolff should be rejected for any post within the Obama Administration for the hostile position he has taken, as Pennsylvania’s Agriculture Secretary, against consumers’ right to know what is in our food. According to the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, Wolff:Tried to ban all labeling of dairy products that didn’t use genetically engineered growth hormone (rBGH or rBST). This was an outright violation of freedom of speech of the dairy processors and the farmers who supplied them.Said that consumers were concerned or confused about the labeling and said his department received many calls about it. Yet when a New York Times reporter asked him about this, Wolff couldn’t provide any surveys showing consumers were confused and could not come up with the name of ONE CONSUMER who had complained.Held one meeting of the so-called Food Labeling Advisory Committee and said they recommended the labeling ban. Yet the committee never voted on anything and never made any recommendations specific to dairy. Moreover, the group most affected by the rules and most opposed to them, the PA Association of Milk Dealers, was never even invited to the meeting.

Microwave weapon will rain pain from the sky

THE Pentagon's enthusiasm for non-lethal crowd-control weapons appears to have stepped up a gear with its decision to develop a microwave pain-infliction system that can be fired from an aircraft.The device is an extension of its controversial Active Denial System, which uses microwaves to heat the surface of the skin, creating a painful sensation without burning that strongly motivates the target to flee. The ADS was unveiled in 2001, but it has not been deployed owing to legal issues and safety fears.Nevertheless, the Pentagon's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) in Quantico, Virginia, has now called for it to be upgraded. The US air force, whose radar technology the ADS is based on, is increasing its annual funding of the system from $2 million to $10 million.The transmitting antenna on the current system is 2 metres across, produces a single beam of similar width and is steered mechanically, making it cumbersome. At the heart of the new weapon will be a compact airborne antenna, which will be steered electronically and be capable of generating multiple beams, each of which can be aimed while on the move.The new antenna will be steered electronically and is capable of generating multiple heat beams The ADS has been dogged by controversy. Jürgen Altmann, a physicist at Dortmund University in Germany, showed that the microwave beams can cause serious burns at levels not far above those required to repel people. This was verified when a US airman was hospitalised with second-degree burns during testing in April 2007.The airborne version will not make it any less contentious. Independent of the mode of production, with this size of antenna the beam will show variations of intensity with distance - not just a simple decrease - up to about 500 metres,says Altmann. Shooting it on the move with any accuracy will be difficult, he adds.Dave Law, head of the technology division of the JNLWD, says the new antenna will operate at the lowest possible effective power level and will have a sophisticated automated target-tracking system.

In a recent cost-benefit analysis, the US Government Accountability Office rated the ADS worst out of eight non-lethal weapons currently in development.

The one above is the real thing, by the way – firmly earthbound.For the non-blog readers to get to know what is going on, though, they will have to go to Reuters or even the New York Times, or the BBC website. I don't know what it is about these European projects, but the British media never seems to report on them. It was the same with Galileo – they just drop off the edge.Anyhow, at a meeting between the seven yesterday, all parties – including the UK - decided not to cancel their orders and instead renegotiate the whole contract, starting afresh as it were, with plans to relaunch the programme in December, when it is hoped that the prototype will make its first flight.This is the projects that is already €5 billion over budget and nearly four years behind schedule. Its customers have already spent €5.7 billion on it, the parent company EADS has written off an additional €2.3 billion and it is costing €100 million a month without ever having left the tarmac.Yet our own defence procurement minister Quentin Davies is right up there, despite the huge problems the delay has created for the RAF. He has agreed to enter the renegotiation on an equal footing with it six partners and is saying I hope we can save the programme.

It can still be cancelled in December, if the negotiations break down, but that is looking increasingly unlikely and, if this goes they way all European projects seem to go, the only outcome of the further talks will be that it is going to cost us a whole bundle more. And when it is actually going to be delivered to the RAF is anyone's guess.The huge irony is that, whatever it costs, a Tory government will most likely have to pay for it, while it will be a Tory defence minister who will be have to explain why, in a few years time, the RAF is critically short of airlift. And Tory turncoat Mr Quentin Davies, by then on the back-benches, will be able to reflect that it was a Conservative government which bought into the project into the first place.
