Tammuz 28, 5769, 7/20/2009 Tired of Praying to a Wall

It was sometime after 4am and I was awake at the computer because I had gotten up to have a quick breakfast before the fast of the 17th of Tammuz. This fast day marks the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem, as well as the beginning of the grueling Three Weeks of mourning. It ends with the fast of Tisha B'Av, the 9th of the month of Av when our Holy Temple was destroyed by the Romans and the subsequent 2,000 year Exile . As I was on the computer, I got an instant message from a rabbi friend of mine (we are actually related) and he wrote me this:4:40 AM Rabbi: I'm sick of fasting. Let's just build the Temple instead.Me: ha! I am with you! Rabbi: I can't stand the mourning game.Well sorry for attacking you at this hour; just had to get it off my chest before going to shul (synagogue) and seeing all the people wailing over the Temple as if they cared; when I try to talk to them about it say, in December, they look at me like I'm crazy; but now in the Three Weeks it's politically correct in Orthodox circles to act as if it's important.Me: you have no idea how much you are appreciated! Rabbi: oh go on, now.

Me: I would love to be a fly on the wall when you do say that to the other Jews. I think we all need to keep hearing this, to wake us from our stupor. We learn it is a mitzvah to build the Temple and we even learn that the Second Temple was empty, didn't have the Holy Ark or the Show Bread, yet we still built it and had it, so why can't we build the Temple today? When we came back to Israel from Persia (after the Purim story) we built the Temple. We didn't wait for it to be dropped from heaven, or until the Messiah came.Rabbi: May we collectively start acting Jewish.Me: amen!

4:48 AM Rabbi: That is exactly true, the mitzva is beckoning to us in every generation, no less now then it was then, and we have become as a people so twisted in thinking, that we think that halachically (the code of Jewish law) there is a problem, when in reality halachically we are supposed to begin building.(end of instant messenger conversation)So, my friends, we are really acting pathetically today. Why do we settle to pray and worship at a wall that sits below our holiest place on earth, where our Temple stood? I am tired of settling for praying at a wall.Yes, it's the Kotel, the Holy Western Wall, but with all due respect, I want more. I want the real deal.I want G-d's house and I want His presence, His Shechina, hovering here with us.These three weeks, we are supposed to be immersed in mourning. As Rabbi Richman stated on his last show of Temple Talk, he said that most people think something like, oy, the three weeks, let's just try to get through this as fast and painless as we can.But this is the time to really feel and yearn for the Third temple. He continued saying that how will we merit the Third Temple, if we don't really yearn for it? Losing our Temple, should be like losing our spouse ...G-d forbid. We should be looking towards the Temple Mount and crying and pacing back and forth like someone in shock, after losing their partner in life. We should be looking at the void on the Temple Mount (not at the big gold pimple) and say to ourselves,How can I go on? Oh my gosh! We have lost our Temple! We have lost the Shechina (G-d's hovering presence) from our midst! We should be feeling as if we can't continue, like if we G-d forbid lost our spouse.We should be asking ourselves as we pace nervously,How can I go on? How can I fill this void in my life? Oh my, we need our Temple! THIS is what we should be feeling, this yearning for not settling to pray at an outside surrounding Western Wall.We want to go UP! We want HaShem to dwell with us again.Every morning, in addition when I pray, I look towards Har HaBayit, the Temple Mount, and I add to my morning prayers,Please G-d, bring us the Moshiach (the Messiah) and let us have the Holy Temple back. We need it so badly! But od most of us yearn for building G-d's house? Everyone here is worried about buying their own house, re-doing their kitchen, or renovating their home, but what about G-d's house? Why doesn't anyone worry about building HIS house? How do we continue to settle for the wall, when we should be yearning, crying, aching for the Holy Temple? We are already a (modern) state for over 60 years, and yet we are still content to pray at a wall.

Can you imagine what G-d might say if He really saw the Jewish people not sit and be content with the Kotel? And instead we demanded that the government allocate the money and build the Temple, and thumb our nose to the world if any of them so much as say boo?? Looking down on us, G-d might tell the angels,Look! My children want the Holy Temple back! They want me to return to them, as they are returning to me. They are willing to get their heads bashed in, they are willing to not settle for mediocrity, and they call for me.I will respond.I have been waiting for you, my Holy Children, to desire Me and now that you call upon me, I will grant you the privilege of having my Temple once again, and this Temple will be a place where the whole world will come to.Because you have showed me your yearning and your actions and willingness to sacrifice for it and I will reward you with it.Wouldn't that just be something? And let's remember, that even if we can't convince our leaders to be courageous and fore ahead with building the temple, just SPEAKING and YEARNING about it could help.Remember, G-d SPOKE the world into being. He did not take his hands and mold planets and stars, He SPOKE the world into being, And G-d said, Let there be light.So even if we can't actually go and get the permission to build it, we can still speak and yearn for it in our prayers, but really mean it.Wouldn't that just be what G-d would want? And wouldn't the building, or at least REAL yearniing for the temple be helping the revealment of G-d in this world, and thus we would have a more peaceful world where mankind can finally understand that G-d is one and His name is one? Yah, I am ready, I am yearning, and I am tired of praying to a wall.

The Temple Will Never be Rebuilt, Islamist Movement Says

(IsraelNN.com) The deputy chief of the Islamist movement in Israel Kimal Al-Khatib told thousands of children in a Saturday Islamist protest on the Temple Mount that the Jewish Temple will never be rebuilt. His speech was published in the Jerusalem-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper Monday morning. If the Jews think that their mourning will end and they will rejoice by destroying the Al-Aqsa mosque and building their Temple, we say to them that their dream will not be fulfilled and they will continue to mourn. Al-Aqsa is for Muslims only,he said.Al-Khatib was referring to the traditional period of mourning Jews commemorate every summer for the destruction of the Holy Temples on Tisha B'Av (The ninth of the Hebrew month of Av). The Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE by the Romans, while the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa mosque were erected in 691 and 705 CE.The Head of the Islamist movement in Jerusalem, Icharma Savri, also spoke to the assembled children. He previously served as the Chief Mufti of the Palestinian Authority.I tell this gathering, swearing by Allah, and in defiance of our enemies. We pass this safekeeping from generation to generation. Al-Aqsa is the safekeeping of the future generations, one after the other, and the children are dedicated to Al-Aqsa. They are the generation which will free it from our enemies,he said.

Arab Media: US May Allow Building in Return for Setting Borders

The Arabic-language Al Quds newspaper based in Jerusalem reported Monday morning that the United States has proposed to agree to Israel’s building a hotel on Jewish-owned property in eastern Jerusalem and several hundred homes elsewhere in return for the American government's setting new borders for Israel and the proposed Palestinian Authority state.The U.S. also will include a provision that 300,000 foreign Arabs can immigrate into areas that Israel would cede to the PA in return for retaining Jewish towns and cities in Maaleh Adumim, Gush Etzion and possibly Ariel and nearby communities. The PA previously has rejected the idea.Neither Israel nor the Obama administration has commented on the report.The issue of the proposed hotel in Jerusalem has left all three sides – the Obama and Netanyahu government and the PA –entrenching themselves into positions that have left virtually no room for compromise.

All sides agree on one critical point with different conclusions: They see no difference between the status of a hotel in eastern Jerusalem and the building of homes in predominantly Jewish neighborhoods populated by more than 250,000 Jews in the capital. The PA, with Obama’s backing, has demanded sovereignty over all of the areas – including Ramot, French Hill and Gilo – that were restored to the Jewish State in the Six-Day War in 1967.The Netanyahu government, with wide support from virtually every party except Meretz and Arab factions, considers all of the areas part of a united Israeli city that will continue to serve as its capital, without a PA presence.The current crisis began in early June, when U.S. President Barack Obama addressed the Muslim world in Cairo and said that a Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria is illegitimate. The State Department later widened the definition of settlements to the Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Homa, located directly across the road from Gilo.President Obama sent U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell to try to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Netanyahu, but their positions were so far apart that the meeting was canceled. Opponents of Biometric Law: It's a Step to a True Police State

The first section of Israel's controversial Biometric Documents Identification Law (the Biometrics Law) was approved Sunday for its second and third reading by a joint Knesset committee which included MKs from the Science and Interior Committees. The session was headed by MK Meir Sheetrit, himself a former Interior Minister. Sheetrit first proposed the law when he was Interior Minister and has been pushing it through various Knesset committees, despite strong objections from some MKs and citizens' groups.The law empowers the Interior Ministry to set up a database that would include biometric identification information on every Israeli citizen. All citizens would be required to submit fingerprints and a facial profile to authorized government agents; those who refuse to do so could face jail time. The information would be stored in a special chip in ID cards, licenses, passports, and other identification documents, and citizens would be required to present the appropriate document when crossing borders, entering government buildings where identification is required, etc. In addition, the individual information would be saved in the Interior Ministry database.

Threat to civil liberties?
The first draft of the law was approved by the Knesset last October, before the fall of the Olmert government According to an Israeli activist group, Israel would be joining countries like Ethiopia, Indonesia, Yemen, and Pakistan, if the law were to pass.Governnment. Sheetrit first proposed the law in order to help cut down on falsification of Israeli ID cards and passports – a major problem, Sheetrit says, given the possibility that Arab terrorists could get hold of Israeli documents to infiltrate the country and carry out terror attacks. Sheetrit says that there are as many as 350,000 forged ID cards in Israel.But opponents say that while the extra security measures that biometric technology could supply are valid, the establishment of a database that would keep the information on file – advocated by both the Interior Ministry and the police – threatens civil liberties, and since the data could end up in the wrong hands, or be used for the wrong purpose, said MK Michael Eitan, chairman of the Knesset Constitution Committee and a sharp opponent of the law.The database could leak and severely damage the right to privacy among Israeli citizens,he said before the Knesset Committee discussion Sunday. It was Eitan's idea to reopen discussion on a number of the approved sections of the law, out of fear that the public was not given a fair chance to learn the law's provisions.

Police state
At Sunday's session, a number of changes were inserted into several sections of the law, in response to criticism by many activist and citizens' rights groups, who have decried what many call the first step to a true police state.In one limitation, the facial profile to be stored in the database will be low resolution, instead of the originally proposed hi-res image. The superior image will be used by officers at checkpoints in order to ensure the identity of an individual, but that image will be disposed of immediately.In another limitation, the Interior Ministry will now have to erase identification from checkpoint computers immediately, as the data is transmitted to the database, which will be on secure servers using encryption technology. However, MKs agreed to allow police to have access to the data on the checkpoint computers before it gets erased. After protests by many in the room, Sheetrit promised to hold another discussion on this issue.Also discussed was how to deal with an individual who is not carrying any identification. Police attorneys said they would need access to the database in such situations. Sheetrit proposed that police use other reasonable methods before such permission would be granted, but the attorneys said that defining such methods would be difficult and time consuming – and that innocent civilians would be forced to wait for hours while their identities were verified, unless police were granted access to the database in these instances.

Stormy debate
During the stormy session last October when the law was passed on its first reading, Sheetrit told opponents that the database was necessary for a number of reasons; for example, he said, with the database in place, the United States would allow Israelis to enter the country without requiring a visa, like citizens of most European Union states.In response, Dr. Michael Birnhack of Tel Aviv University said that, to the contrary, the U.S. was demanding the database only in relation to passports, not Israeli ID cards – and that none of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development states that Israel hopes to join next year have such databases, which in most western countries would be seen as a violation of civil liberties. While some European countries do use biometrics for identification purposes, they do not store the information for use by police or other agencies, and even in the U.S, information is stored only on non-citizens.According to Israeli activist group No2Bio, Israel would be joining countries like Ethiopia, Indonesia, Yemen, and Pakistan, which have similar databases, if the law were to pass in its present form.An activist in Judea and Samaria also decried the law, saying it would most likely be put to political use by police.For example, imagine the situation where the young girls from Amona who refused to identify themselves are dragged into a police station when this law comes into effect, despite their wishes. They would very quickly be identified against their will, and police might even compare their photos in the database to footage of the protest to see who interfered with their work.Isn't one of the principles of democracy the freedom to say – or not say – whatever one wants?

Netanyahu: Jerusalem is Ours, Not Up for Debate

(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu issued a sharp response Sunday to United States pressure to stop Jews from building in parts of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinian Authority. Israel's sovereignty in Jerusalem is not up for debate, Netanyahu said, and Jews are permitted to build in any part of the capital city, as are Arabs.Netanyahu implied that the U.S. request was racist, saying before the weekly Cabinet meeting, Imagine what would happen if Jews were forbidden to live or to buy apartments in certain parts of London, New York, Paris or Rome. There would be an international outcry.All the more, we cannot to a decree like this regarding Jerusalem,he said.Over the weekend, the U.S. State Department summoned Israeli envoy Michael Oren and demanded that Israel halt construction of Jewish homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, near the ancient grave of Shimon HaTzaddik (Simon the Just). The property on which the homes are to be built has been owned by Jewish activist Dr. Irving Moskowitz for more than 20 years.Oren told U.S. officials that Israel would not agree to stop building in the area.Israel annexed Sheikh Jarrah and other Jerusalem neighborhoods following the Six Day War, in which the city was reunified after 19 years of Jordanian rule in the eastern half of the city. While Israel has maintained sovereignty in the capital city for more than 40 years, the Palestinian Authority continues to demand all areas controlled by Jordan in the 1950s.The United States, along with most of the world, has refused to recognize Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem in deference to the PA. The American embassy is located in Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem, and American citizens born in Jerusalem may not list “Israel” as their country of birth on their American documents.

Israeli Muslim Children told Jerusalem Occupied, Raise Millions for Al Aksa
While Israeli leaders proclaim Jerusalem to be the unified capital of Israel, Israeli Muslim leaders teach their children that Jerusalem is rightfully Arab and Muslim. On Saturday, the Islamic Movement bussed thousands of Israeli Arab Muslim children to the Al Aksa Mosque on the Temple Mount, where they heard speeches referring to the Temple Mount and Jerusalem as areas occupied by Israel.We must remove the occupying forces from the mosque, and from all of Jerusalem,said Sheikh Khamel Khatib, a senior Islamic Movement leader.The children brought money which they had gathered throughout the year on behalf of the Islamic Movement. Donations came to roughly 3 million shekels, which Islamic Movement leaders said would be used for the Al Aksa Mosque and Islamic Movement institutions.

JERUSALEM – Israel's foreign minister is heading to South America on a mission partly aimed at stemming Iranian infiltration on the continent, a senior diplomat said Monday.Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's 10-day visit to Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Colombia comes at a time of rising Iranian influence in Latin America.Venezuela and Bolivia have close ties to Iran, and Israeli and U.S. officials have expressed concern about Islamic militant activities, some of them connected to Iran, in the lawless region where the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet.The visit is meant to emphasize the high importance the Foreign Ministry ascribes to Latin America,a statement from the ministry said.Iran underscored its interest in the region on Monday when the country's ambassador to Brazil, Moshen Shaterzadeh, announced President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will visit Brazil on his first foreign trip since winning election. He did not give a date.Lieberman was set to leave late Monday. During his trip, Lieberman will tackle the Iranian issue with South American leaders, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said, and chiefly the activities of the Iranian-backed Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah.Israel, along with many others, is concerned about Iran's infiltration into Latin America, primarily through Hezbollah, and this will definitely be an issue discussed between the Israeli foreign minister and his counterparts,Ayalon said.In Argentina, Lieberman is slated to attend a memorial marking the 15th anniversary of the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured 200. That attack came two years after a bomb flattened the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and killed 29 people.

Argentine officials claim Iran orchestrated the attack and that Hezbollah agents carried it out. The United States and Israel also say Iran is behind the bombing. Iran has denied involvement.In May, a secret Israeli Foreign Ministry report obtained by The Associated Press said Iran's nuclear program was being aided by Venezuela and Bolivia. The report accused the nations of supplying Iran with uranium. Both South American countries dismissed the allegation.Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales are strong supporters of Ahmadinejad and have solidified links with Tehran through trade deals and political support. Both Venezuela and Bolivia broke off ties with Israel in January to protest a military offensive in the Gaza Strip.Also worrying for Israeli and U.S. officials is the "triple border" area adjacent to Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. The U.S. State Department said in its latest global terrorism report that lax controls in the region give Islamic extremists, and Hezbollah in particular, a safe haven and an area to raise money for their operations.The South American nations deny there is a problem with terrorism in the area.The State Department terrorism report released in April acknowledged that no corroborated information shows that Hezbollah, Hamas, or other Islamic extremist groups used the Tri-Border Area for military-type training or planning of terrorist operations.But the report said the U.S. remained concerned Islamic terrorist groups still take advantage of the porous borders to raise funds for terror groups.In 2006, the U.S. Treasury blacklisted and blocked the assets of nine men and two businesses operating primarily out of the triple frontier crossroads city and main smuggling point of Ciudad del Este, alleging they provided financial and logistical support to Hezbollah.Associated Press Writer Bradley Brooks in Rio de Janeiro contributed to this report.

El Salvador has officially joined the Red regimes of Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Bolivia. South America is turning Red, dark Red, and little is being said to alert North Americans of the encroaching Red plague. Perhaps that's because North America is moving in the same direction. The president of the United States has surrounded himself with socialists, and some of those closest to him have had a part in turning South America Red. According to the Associated Press (March 17, 2009), Mauricio Funes, the presidential candidate of the Farbundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) is the new head of the nation of El Salvador. Behind Funes is a party of former Marxist guerrillas that fought to overthrow U.S.-backed governments in the 1980s and whose rise to power has raised fears of a communist regime in the war-scarred Central American country.The AP admits ex-guerrillas will almost certainly form part of the Funes government, including Vice President-elect Salvador Sanchez Ceren, a rebel commander-turned-congressman.And then there's the drug connection! Investor's Business Daily reports that last May, the FMLN confessed to a relationship with Colombia's drug-trafficking FARC Marxist terrorists after documents found on the computer of dead FARC chieftain Raul Reyes, killed in a 2008 raid, proved it (March 16, 2009).Funes, of course, says he'll govern moderately, more like Brazil socialist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva than Venezuela's radical [communist] Hugo Chavez. Of course, this is what the Nicaraguan communist Daniel Ortega said, too, before he displayed his communist proletariat morality by hugging the communist dictators Castro and Chavez. Ortega and all his South American pals are hard-core Marxist-Leninists. While all of this, of course, is relevant to an ardent free-market capitalist, what really frightens me is that Obama's latest announced spiritual adviser has had connections with all these Marxist regimes. And who is the president's latest adviser? The Rev. Jim Wallis.

Frontpage Magazine (March 17, 2009) reports,The most notable of [Obama's] spiritual advisers today is his friend of many years, Rev. Jim Wallis.Rev. Wallis admits that he and Obama have been talking faith and politics for a long time.He was picked by Obama to draft the faith-based policies of his campaign at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last year. Why should this alarm us? First, Jim Wallis has had relationships with the communist Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES).Second, his Witness for Peace was an attempt to defend the Nicaraguan Sandinistas! Wallis, together with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama's former pastor of 20 years) rallied support for the communist Nicaraguan regime and protested actions by the United States which supported the anti-communist Contra rebels(Family World News, February 2009, p. 7). Milton Friedman's classic Capitalism and Freedom explains how individual liberty can only thrive when accompanied by economic liberty.Third, Wallis and his Sojourners community of fellow-travelers believe Fidel Castro's Cuba, Hugo Chavez's Venezuela, Daniel Ortega's Nicaragua and the other revolutionary forces restructuring socialist societies are the communist paradises the United States needs to emulate in order to establish social justice. Writing in the November 1983 issue of Sojourners, Jacob Laksin notes, Jim Wallis and Jim Rice drafted what would become the charter of leftist activists committed to the proliferation of communist revolutions in Central America (Laksin, Sojourners: History, Activities and Agendas in Discoverthenetworks.org., 2005). The ugly truth is Wallis wishes to see the destruction of the United States as a nation and in its place a radical nonconformist community patterned after the progressive, socialist commune he established in Washington, D.C., in 1971 (Laksin, Ibid.).

The Sojourners community,says Laksin, actively embraced liberation theology, rallying to the cause of communist regimes that had seized power with the promise of bringing about a revolutionary restructuring of society.Clark Pinnock, a disaffected former member of Sojourners, said that the community's members were 100 percent in favor of the Nicaraguan [communist] revolution (Laksin, Ibid.). All this revolutionary activity in spite of the fact that today's Cuba, for example, has to import 84 percent of its food supply due to the socialistic mess of the agricultural system (150,000 oxen till the ground because tractors represent capitalism). However, in a move that looks more like capitalism than Marxism's state farms, Raul Castro is moving to boost food production by putting more land under the control of private farmers (The Weekly Standard, March 23, 2009).It appears that Raul Castro is learning what America's early pilgrims learned back in the 1620s! William Bradford noted in his History of Plymouth Plantation that once he canceled the pilgrims' socialistic experiment and provided each settler with a piece of property to till, starvation was averted. We can hope and pray that Raul Castro continues to implement more capitalistic policies and will learn firsthand the economic system that has brought more people out of poverty than any other in the history of the world. (See Rodney Stark, The Victory of Reason.)Of course, Wallis should have learned the lessons of Plymouth Plantation early in his education, but may not have because our Secular Humanistic K-12 curricula delete most of the history of the pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact in an attempt to avoid acknowledging its advancement of Christianity.(Sadly, one first-grade textbook that does include the pilgrims has them praying to the Indians.)For years, Wallis has been in the forefront of the evangelical left and has been fêted at numerous evangelical colleges and seminaries. That seems to be the in thing right now. His publication Sojourners is piled high on these campuses for the reading pleasure of the naïve and foolish. Unbeknown to these colleges and seminaries is Wallis' Red background. He was the president of the radical Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) while at Michigan State University. The SDS was the youth arm of the League for Industrial Democracy – the American counterpart to the British Fabian Society founded to promote socialism throughout the West. One of the League's mentors for years was Norman Thomas, who argued that "the American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened (Google, Norman Thomas quotes). Another prominent League mentor was John Dewey, a signatory of the atheistic, socialistic 1933 Humanist Manifesto.The SDS actually merits a chapter in Richard J. Ellis's work The Dark Side of the Left: Illiberal Egalitarianism in America,published by the University of Kansas Press.

In October of 1969, SDS original organizer Tom Hayden directed his followers to set off on a rampage, smashing windows of parked cars, hurling rocks and bricks through apartment windows, and fighting with police.Hayden blamed the police for his violence even though later his followers comforted themselves, because theirs was a violence to end all violence, a liberating and righteous violence that would rid the world of a system that deformed and destroyed people. Such glorious ends justified, even ennobled, violent means (Ellis, p. 137). Ellis insists that the language of revolution and violent confrontation was evident throughout the ranks of the SDS. Jim Wallis was part and parcel of this pro-communist group of radicals and revolutionaries.Wallis' Sojourners enterprise has been a radical, socialistic undertaking from the start. Frontpage Magazine (March 17, 2009) says, As one of its first acts, Sojourners formed a commune in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Southern Columbia Heights, where members shared their finances and participated in various activist campaigns that centered on attacking the U.S. foreign policy, denouncing American imperialism,and extolling Marxist revolutionary movements in the Third World.Sojourners contributing editors included the radical Daniel Pentagon Papers Berrigan, Walter Brueggemann, James Hal Cone (author of the racist Black Theology and Black Power in which the white race is depicted as devils), Rosemary Radford Ruether (professor of Feminist Theology, Catholics for Choice, God is the feminine Gaia), Ron Sider, Cornel West and Garry Wills. Today, Sojourners' Board of Directors includes Wallis, Ron Sider, Brian McLaren and Bart Campolo. Over the years, Wallis has been pro-Vietcong and actually gloried in America's defeat in Vietnam. He said, I don't know how else to express the quiet emotion that rushed through me when the news reports showed that the United States had finally been defeated in Vietnam (Ronald H. Nash, Why The Left Is Not Right,p. 58).However, like Jane Fonda, Wallis said next to nothing about the communist genocide that followed the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia. In fact, in a typical communist response, he criticized those fleeing Vietnam by boat as somehow attempting to support their consumer habits in other lands (Nash, p. 59).Wallis has been closely associated with Richard Barnet (former contributing editor of Sojourners) and the Institute for Policy Studies, a radical left-wing think tank supporting socialist revolutionaries around the world; Wallis had his book The Soul of Politics published by Orbis Books in 1994, a radical left-wing Roman Catholic publishing arm of the radical left-wing Maryknollers; Sojourner magazine has been a strong supporter of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and, indeed, has supported every left-wing, liberation theology cause around the world.

And yes, Wallis portrays the evangelical right that happens to be pro-American and anti-communist as members of the forces of darkness (Nash, p. 66, 71). For Wallis, a good Christian is someone who is pro-communist and socialist, while a bad Christian is someone who is anti-communist and pro-capitalist. The cry of the Sojourners crowd is social justice for the poor and downtrodden – social justice being code for socialism/communism.I could not disagree more strongly. I contend that the Marxist-Leninist worldview is 100 percent contrary to biblical Christianity, and I document this extensively in my book Understanding the Times.Further, communism is directly responsible for the murder of tens of millions of human beings, a slaughter documented by Stephane Courtois, et. al. in their 1999 book,The Black Book on Communism (Harvard University Press).I will attempt to be as kind and gentle as humanly possible and break the news to the Rev. Wallis and his spiritual advisee Barack Obama – socialism has never lifted the poor out of poverty. It has equally distributed poverty, but it has never been able to create the wealth that is partially responsible for lifting the poor out of poverty. I say partially responsible because one's worldview is even more important than wealth in reducing poverty. But socialism is a flawed idea, and it poisons the worldview of the people it influences. Our brothers on the evangelical left, who are concerned with the poor, need to read Theodore Dalrymple's Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass.Although not a Christian, Dalrymple understands perfectly the importance of a proper worldview and its role in combating poverty, drugs, crime and broken families.Can we admit a hard truth? Christian capitalist Truett Cathy's Chic-fil-A has done more to fight poverty and help the poor than all the pronouncements of Jim Wallis, Ron Sider, Daniel Berrigan, Brian McLaren, Tony and Bart Campolo, and their entire crew of left-wing sociological and economic friends combined.Thomas Sowell explains,It would be devastating to the egos of the intelligentsia to realize, much less admit, that businesses have done more to reduce poverty than all the intellectuals put together. Ultimately, it is only wealth that can reduce poverty, and most of the intelligentsia have no interest whatever in finding out what actions and policies increase the national wealth(Capitalism Magazine, May 9, 2005). In fact, the intellectuals are the very ones who complain about those who do increase wealth. Again, Thomas Sowell speaks to this issue: Think about the things that have improved our lives the most over the past century – medical advances, the transportation revolution, huge increases in consumer goods, dramatic improvements in housing, the computer revolution. The people who created these things – the doers – are not popular heroes. Our heroes are the talkers who complain about the doers.Socialism is built on a slogan: What can government do for me today? instead of What can I do to better prepare myself to take care of myself in order to be a better Christian and servant of my Lord? Preparation involves individual responsibility, traditional family values, education, love of God and neighbor, and compassion for the up-and-outers as well as the down-and-outers.Socialists stand against nearly every Christian, conservative principle imaginable. Compare the socialist agenda with Yale professor David Gelernter's summary of the conservative position – the freedom of every American to make his own way, free speech on the radio and everywhere else, free elections for workers and other people ... freedom to acknowledge and celebrate the nation's rootedness in Christianity, Judaism and the Bible ... love of liberty and love of God (National Review, March 23, 2009, p. 32).

In 2006, Barack Obama was the keynote speaker at Jim Wallis' Call to Renewal conference, Building a Covenant for a New America.Following his address, in an interview by the United Church News, he cited the teachings of the UCC (United Church of Christ) as foundation stones for his political work.He said, Just as my pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright from Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, welcomed me as a young man years ago, UCC churches across the country open their doors to millions of Americans each Sunday . ... I believe that democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal values. Social justice and national security are both universal values, values that may originate for some in their religious beliefs, but are shared by us all.What Americans can look forward to now that Rev. Wallis has the ear of the president is what Sojourners magazine has been peddling since 1971 – advocating America's transformation into a socialist nation (Accuracy in Media Research Report, May 1983, Section 19). Could it be that America, who turned her back on God by deciding that prayer and the Bible can no longer grace her public schools, but homosexuality (indeed the whole GLBTQ rainbow), abortion counseling and condoms in school colors are welcomed, is experiencing the very judgment of God? There are consequences for forgetting God,as Solzhenitsyn noted about his mother country, Russia. These same consequences are piling up on the metro-sexual West in general and on the United States in particular.David A. VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) – Calm overnight winds aided Canadian firefighters on Monday as they struggled to control forest fires that have displaced thousands in a wine-producing and resort region of central British Columbia.The three fires were likely sparked by human activity, and an official said they are a troubling sign of how the rest of wildfire season will go in the region, which is suffering some of the driest conditions in Canada this summer.Calmer overnight winds meant there was no significant growth in two fires that have forced evacuations near the city of Kelowna, according to the British Columbia Forest Service. A third fire was not burning near populated areas.Crews are hoping to aggressively attack the fires,Fire Information Officer Elise Riedlinger said.About 17,000 people in the District of West Kelowna, along the shores of Okanagan Lake, have been evacuated or told to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice because of the fires, which began on Saturday.Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley of south-central British Columbia, is about a 250-mile drive east of Vancouver. It is the heart of Canada's West Coast wine industry and a popular vacation spot.

All three fires were believed caused by human activity. Officials said they may have been sparked by something such as carelessly discarded cigarette.We have no reason to believe (they were) deliberately set,said Rob Moore, an incident commander with the provincial forestry service.Officials said the region did not get rain in June as it normally does, and that the speed at which the wind-fanned flames spread on Saturday reflects how dry forest conditions are.The fires have brought back painful memories of 2003, when fires raged near several communities in British Columbia, including Kelowna, which saw more than 200 homes destroyed in a single dramatic night of flames.

District of West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater told a radio interviewer on Monday that he is worried because the worst of the 2003 fires happened later in the summer than these fires. No significant rain is expected in the area for several days.British Columbia is a major source of Canada's lumber exports, but none of the province's fires so far this year have posed a major threat to the timber industry.Given the weak lumber market, the fires have less of an impact than would something that destroys houses in the United States, such as hurricane, said Paul Quinn, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.Lumber supply is not the question. Demand is the question, he said.The Kelowna fires have apparently caused little property damage so far. (Betsy Trumpener/CBC) Fire crews are assessing the best way to fight three largely uncontrolled fires in B.C.'s Okanagan Valley on Monday, but with no rain and high temperatures forecast, nature will likely provide little help.

Environment Canada predicted temperatures in Kelowna on Monday would reach 32 C — about seven degrees warmer than Sunday's high — and 35 on Tuesday, but fortunately the winds were not forecast to be strong on Monday.About 11,000 people were ordered out of their homes in the West Kelowna area over the weekend while another 6,000 remain on alert to leave at a moment's notice.The most dangerous fire started Saturday afternoon in the Glenrosa area near West Kelowna and spread quickly, destroying three homes.Dale Bojahra, a forest protection technician with the B.C. Forest Service said that fire is four square kilometres in size, but 40 per cent contained, after crews were able to get heavy machinery into one section and create a partial fireguard on Sunday.Fire crews plan to continuing attacking that fire on the ground Monday.Another fire near the West Kelowna area of Rose Valley is now 1.5 square kilometres in size, but fire officials said that blaze is not contained due to the rough terrain in the area.The Forest Service said the steep terrain made it too dangerous to fight that fire from the ground, so firefighters are using helicopters and air tankers to battle the blaze.Meanwhile, a third fire at Terrace Mountain, near Fintry, has grown to 8.5 square kilometres. The fire is not contained and has only been fought from the air, but is not a risk to homes or communities.

Road closures
Highway 97 through West Kelowna has been closed because of the fires, but an alternate path along Route 201 is open for light vehicle traffic.Police are asking people to stay away from critical areas like the highway roadblock and portions of Okanagan Lake where air support is scooping up water to use on the fires.A Telus official asked people to use their cellphones only if necessary, because wireless service in the area is overwhelmed. PASADENA, Calif. – Astronomers say Jupiter has apparently been struck by an object, possibly a comet.Images taken by NASA early Monday show a scar in the atmosphere near the south pole of the gas giant.The images, taken by the space agency's infrared telescope in Hawaii, come on the 15th anniversary of another comet strike.In 1994, Jupiter was bombarded by pieces of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena captured the new images after receiving a tip from an amateur astronomer the night before.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A tropical wave about 200 miles east of the Windward Islands has a small chance -- less than 30 percent -- of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center forecast Monday.Over the next five days, most weather models forecast the system would cross the Lesser Antilles, the Dominican Republic and Haiti before reaching the Bahamas and Florida.Over the next day or so, the NHC expects locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds will affect the Windward Islands during the next day or so as the wave moves westward at 15 to 20 mph.The Windward Islands include Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Dominica.If the system does develop into a tropical storm with winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour, it would be named Ana, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.By this time last year, there had already been four named storms in the Atlantic basin.Energy traders watch for storms that could enter the Gulf of Mexico and threaten U.S. oil and natural gas platforms and refineries along the coast.Commodities traders likewise watch storms that could hit agriculture crops like citrus and cotton in Florida and other states along the coast to Texas.

KARACHI (AFP) – At least 16 people, including four children, were killed and 27 others were injured after the first torrential rains of the monsoon lashed Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, officials said on Sunday.The heavy monsoon rain, which started early Saturday, brought much of the city to a standstill as power and communication systems were badly affected and hundreds of people were forced from their homes.Meteorological officials said more rain was due in the next 24 hours in southern Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital.Sixteen people were killed and 27 injured as rain lashed the city. We fear a rise in the death toll as rain is still continuing,police chief Haneef Mohammad Javed told AFP.The dead included five women and four children, Javed said, adding that a seven-month-old infant was among those who perished.Four people were electrocuted, two drowned and the rest died as the roofs of their houses caved in,he said, adding: We have moved several people to safer places.The city's mayor Mustafa Kamal told AFP he had received reports that a number of people had died and dozens been hurt but did not give exact figures.I am visiting the affected areas. A senior meteorological official in Islamabad said that the overall monsoon rain would be low.The total monsoon rains in Pakistan are expected to be 30 percent below normal,the met office head Qamar-uz-Zaman told AFP.The monsoon season in Pakistan runs from early July to mid September, but Zaman said this year season started late.

SEOUL (AFP) – Torrential rain battered North Korea's capital and other regions over the weekend, state media said on Sunday amid concerns that flooding may aggravate the country's food shortages.The official Korean Central News Agency said up to 287 millimetres (11.5 inches) of rain fell in Pyongyang and the provinces of South Phyongan and South Hamgyong between Friday and Saturday.

But the agency gave no immediate damage report.

The North, after decades of deforestation, is particularly vulnerable to flooding, which worsens chronic food shortages by washing away crops.South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed intelligence official, said the latest torrential rain could damage the North's farmland and force the communist regime to call for outside food assistance.It's hard to make accurate predictions, but chances are high that North Korea has suffered flood damage given its weak capability of maintaining and controlling the flooding,the official told Yonhap.In that case, the food crisis can worsen so that North Korea cannot but request the international community for assistance.North Korea in 2007 reported at least 600 people dead or missing following devastating floods that caused huge damage to all sectors of the economy.A Seoul government report said this month the North was expected to run short of up to 840,000tons of food this year.

On Friday, July 10th, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin signed House Joint Resolution 27 (HJR27), sponsored by State Rep. Mike Kelly.The resolution claims sovereignty for the state under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States.The House passed the resolution by a vote of 37-0 (3not voting) and the Senate passed it by a vote of 40-0.Six other states have had both houses of their legislature pass similar resolutions – Tennessee, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Louisiana – Alaska joins Tennessee as the second to have such a resolution signed by the Governor.

A GROWING MOVEMENT

Passage of this resolution appears to be part of what is now a growing state-level resistance to the federal government on various levels.Similar 10th Amendment resolutions have been introduced in 37 states around the country, and various states are considering single-issue legislation in direct contravention to federal laws.

Most recently, the Arizona Legislature passed a measure for public approval on the 2010 state ballot that would give Arizona voters the opportunity to nullify, or opt out, of any potential national health care legislation.Since 2007, more than two dozen states have passed legislation refusing to implement the Real ID act of 2005. In response, the federal government has recently announced that they want to repeal and replace the law due to a rebellion by states.Pending legislation in states around the country also includes preventing state law enforcement officials from enforcing federal laws, refusing federal gun regulations, refusing to send a state’s national guard to any duty other than what the constitution authorizes, legalizing marijuana for various purposes and more.

A FIRST STEP

While HJR27 is strongly-word in support of the principles of limited, constitutional government that the 10th Amendment represents, it is a Joint Resolution and does not carry with it the force of law. Sixty million Europeans will need priority vaccination against swine flu, EU health commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has said, warning that there won't be vaccinations for everyone.Speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa after her visit to a health centre by the Portuguese town of Estoril, the Cypriot commissioner pointed out that the number of people across the EU most at risk from the new type of flu, A (H1N1), had been estimated at 60 million by Brussels' experts, according to AFP.Health ministers from the 27 member states are due to meet in October to decide on the practical details of the vaccination programme against swine flu which has infected almost 95,000 people in 136 countries since April, according to official figures by World Health Organisation published on 6 July.Although the new virus has most lead to less severe health problems than ordinary flu, the WHO has reported 429 deaths from the disease. Flu vaccine manufacturers increased production of seasonal flu vaccines in June and intend to produce a vaccine against the pandemic H1N1 flu virus, Reuters reported.So far, the virus remains relatively mild. But experts fear it could mutate to become much strong during winter, the main flu season in Europe.This may result in a fight between member states for vaccines. Germany, France and the UK have already ordered billions of euros worth of vaccine stockpiles.The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on Sunday (19 July) said there were 16,095 confirmed cases in the EU and Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland.Britain has recorded the highest rate at over 10,600. Spain is next with 1,309 while Lithuania is at the bottom of the scale with seven confirmed cases. It is not clear why there are such discrepancies between countries or why Britain is being hit to hard, having recorded 29 deaths by the flu. Spain, with four deaths, is the only other country of the 30 included in the ECDC figures recording fatalities. The varying figures have also meant different response around the EU. The European Commission has been pushing member states to cooperate and pool resources so that least prepared member states are also covered.

This is meeting resistance in countries such as Britain, which considers itself well prepared.

Seasonal flu

The differences in approach can also be seen when it comes to season flu. Earlier this month, Brussels said national capitals should report annually on vaccination coverage and increase vaccination and vaccine production for ordinary flu. It suggested that by 2010 some 75 percent of people over 65 and three quarters of people with underlying health problems, such as diabetes and asthma, should be vaccinated annually.The two specific groups are considered as the most vulnerable against seasonal flu, which results in an estimated 40,000 to 200,000 deaths each year in the EU.Vaccination rates in the elderly vary across the bloc. While Netherlands has 80 percent coverage, Lithuania comes in at the other end of the scale with only 2 percent of the elderly covered, according to commission figures.

He showed disdain and indifference in stating that the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80% of the total health care bill out there – the inference being ration their care and let em die to cut costs.

At the same time, he favored big insurers by saying that One of the incentives for (them) to get involved in this process is that potentially they’re going to have a whole bunch of new customers, paying customers….insurance companies will thrive under this plan.As for a public option to fill holes, Obama was receptive to alternatives but adamantly against universal single-payer coverage in saying: For us to completely change our system, root and branch, would be hugely disruptive.Only market-based solutions will be considered along with huge cost-containment measures, mostly affecting millions of working Americans, the poor, elderly, and chronically ill.Over the next decade, Medicare and Medicaid may lose over $600 billion in funding with recipients, of course, making up the difference or foregoing care. About $317 billion is proposed for efficiencies with another $313 billion in cuts for hospitals that treat the poor and uninsured. Many of them are already severely strapped as unemployment soars, charitable donations are down, expenses rise, vital services and staffs have to be cut to stay afloat, and growing numbers won’t make it as economic conditions worsen.Instead of helping to fill budget gaps, Obama plans less aid to shut them down. It will leave some areas dependent on more distant ones for treatment, and let large chains consolidate for greater dominance. Accessible quality care will be less available and affordable so, of course, patients will lose out – mostly the elderly, chronically ill, those on society’s lower rungs, and all working Americans because an uncaring administration and Congress threw them overboard for profit and efficiencies.If Obamacare passes, most working people, the disadvantaged, and those singled out as less important will experience large rollbacks in quality, readily accessible coverage. For them, future health problems will be more hazardous than ever because a callous nation doesn’t care.On July 17 as expected, two of three key House committees passed HR 3200. Largely along party lines, Ways and Means voted 23 – 18. Education and Labor approved 26 – 22 with a Kucinich amendment that may not survive a floor vote or make it to the Senate.It leaves HR 3200 intact but lets states create single-payer plans. Eight are now considering them – California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Missouri, and Washington with perhaps more to follow.On June 11 in Pennsylvania, HealthCare4ALLPA organized over 400 people for a state capital rally, and its Executive Director Chuck Pennachio predicts pending legislation passage later in the year because bipartisan support backs it. So do most Pennsylvanians, and Governor Ed Rendell said he’ll sign what comes to his desk.

Kucinich hailed its importance in saying:

There are many models of health care reform from which to choose around the world – the vast majority of which perform far better than ours. The one that has been the most tested here and abroad is single-payer. Under (it) everyone in the US would get a card that would allow access to any doctor at virtually any hospital. Doctors and hospitals would continue to be privately run, but the insurance payments would be in public hands. By getting rid of the for-profit insurance companies, we can save $400 billion per year and provide coverage for all medically necessary services for everyone in the US.Tens of billions more annually could be saved if the government negotiated drug prices like it does for the Veterans Administration and Medicaid. The Congressional Budget Office estimated it would be $110 billion over 10 years for Medicare recipients alone, comprising about 15% of Americans. For the entire population, it would be much greater even though over-aged 65 people use more prescription drugs than any other age group.

A Fly in Obamacare’s Ointment

One emerged on July 16 when Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director Douglas Elmendorf told the Senate Budget Committee that health care bills under consideration will raise, not cut costs. We do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending. On the contrary, the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility for health care costs even though much of it is shifted to individuals.Reversing its earlier opposition, the influential American Medical Association (AMA) endorsed the House bill after a new payments provision was added to halt scheduled 2010 cuts to doctors under Medicare.

AMA’s president, Dr. James Rohack, said:

We pledge to work with the House committees and leadership to build support for passage of health reform legislation to expand access to high quality affordable health care for all Americans.The AMA calls it an important step, but one of many steps in the process,including income-increasing measures for their members and individual responsibility for health insurance, including premium assistance for those who need it.Opposing Obamacare are advocates for universal single-payer coverage like Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). On July 16, it said the House health reform bill is a proven failure and called for an amendment to overturn it and implement a Medicare-for-all system.PNHP’s Dr. Quentin Young said similar state efforts repeatedly foundered. Citing Massachusetts’ experience, he explained that The state is dumping 30,000 legal residents off insurance, and the largest safety-net hospital is suing the state for decimating the hospital’s budget to shore up reform. Meanwhile 1 in 6 (state) residents (can’t) pay their medical bills, and 18% (of them) with insurance skipped care last year because they couldn’t afford it. The Massachusetts model is no solution.Neither are House and Senate bills that will make a broken system worse. It will backtrack from real reform and make it harder than ever to implement. The time to do it right is now.That’s what Single Payer Action believes – 1,000,000 Strong for Single Payer, everybody in, nobody out. They’ll keep confronting government and corporate officials until single-payer is the law of the land and America treats health care coverage like all other Western nations.

Not even close.Other House and Senate Democrats also expressed unease. Damage control followed.Speaker Pelosi said a bill is on track for a floor vote before the House and Senate August 10 through Labor Day weekend recess. We’re in excellent shape,she told reporters in response to questions about growing breaks in the ranks.Obama was just as positive in saying Those who are betting against this happening this year are badly mistaken.In a lengthy prepared statement, he cited unprecedented progress so far that will finally lower costs, guarantee coverage, and provide more choice….Let me repeat: Health insurance reform cannot add to our deficit over the next decade and I mean it….eventually this is going to happen.Perhaps so with New York Times backing. A March 7 editorial said President Obama has shown both courage and sound judgment pressing for quick action on comprehensive health care reform, even in the midst of the country’s deep economic crisis. He has rightly stressed the urgency of reining in skyrocketing health care costs that are straining the budgets of families, businesses, and federal and state governments.Unmentioned was that insurance and drug company profiteers cause the problem or that universal single-payer coverage is the obvious, fairest, and only solution.In a July 6 editorial, The Times referred to the bloated, inefficient health care system,but stressed cost control on the backs of recipients, not providers, and perhaps raising taxes.The first task is to find savings. Some respected analysts suggest that as much as 30 percent of all health care spending in this country – some $700 billion a year – may be wasted on tests and treatments that do not improve the health of the recipients.Unconsidered was the right of doctors and patients to assess problems and choose treatments, not elected officials, bureaucrats, unnamed analysts, or Times editorial writers. Yet the paper stressed the importance of reallocating hundreds of billions of dollars from projected spending on Medicare and Medicaid (and) impos(ing) additional cuts after a few years if savings are less than projected.Again, The Times and other media sources stress market-based solutions and are mindless to the harm that Obama’s plan will cause.

Possible Intrusive Provisions in Obamacare

On July 16, CNSNews.com’s Editor-in-Chief Terence Jeffrey covered another concern that needs watching. He cited the official summary of the approved Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee’s version of S. 1099 that:Authorizes a demonstration program to improve immunization coverage. Under this program, CDC will provide grants to states to improve immunization coverage of children, adolescents, and adults through the use of evidence-based interventions.The word interventions causes concern. States may use funds to implement interventions that are recommended (or perhaps mandated) by the Community Preventive Services Task Force, such as reminders or recalls for patients or providers, or home visits.Including home visits suggests that perhaps immunization teams will intervene at personal residences to assure everyone is vaccinated if federal mandates order it.S. 1099’s Title III is also worrisome: Improving the Health of the American People. Under Subtitle C: Creating Healthier Communities,the Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary may establish a demonstration program to award grants to states to improve the provision of recommended immunizations for children, adolescents, and adults through the use of evidence-based, population-based interventions for high-risk populations.Under one of Title III’s provisions, grant money may be used for home visit immunization interventions.Specifically:Funds received under a grant under this subsection (Title III, Method E) shall be used to implement interventions that are recommended by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services (as established by the secretary, acting through the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or other evidence-based interventions, including:(A) providing immunization reminders or recalls for target populations of clients, patients, and consumers; (B) educating target populations and health care providers concerning immunizations in combination with one or more other interventions; (C) reducing out-of-pocket costs for families for vaccines and their administration; (D) carrying out immunization-promoting strategies for participants or clients of public programs, including assessments of immunization status, referrals to health care providers, education, provision of on-site immunizations, or incentives for immunization; (E) providing for home visits that promote (or perhaps mandate) immunization through education, assessments of need, referrals, provision of immunizations, or other services; (F) providing reminders or recalls for immunization providers; (G) conducting assessments of, and providing feedback to, immunization providers; or (H) any combination of one or more interventions described in this paragraph.

All Vaccines Are Hazardous

In three recent articles, this writer cited scientific evidence of hidden dangers in all vaccines. They contain squalene-based adjuvants that cause a host of annoying to life-threatening autoimmune diseases and must be avoided, even if mandated. It’s also known that vaccines don’t protect against diseases they’re designed to prevent and often cause them.Currently at issue is concern over Swine Flu and WHO’s June 11 declaration of a global pandemic even though no forensic evidence links any deaths to H1N1. Yet experimental, untested, toxic and extremely dangerous vaccines are being rushed to market for potentially mandated immunizations globally as the fall flu season approaches. If enacted in time, Obamacare may provide cover, and if not, other US laws empower the HHS and Defense secretaries to declare a national emergency and compel everyone in the country to be vaccinated, even though submitting risks serious health consequences.Staying alert is essential as Obamacare’s passage will shift more of the health care burden on those who can least afford it and prepare Americans for hazardous mandatory Swine Flu vaccinations in the fall. Grassroots opposition to both schemes is vital to the health and well-being of everyone.

Oak Lawn, Illinois - Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), the international movement to re-establish an international Islamic state or Caliphate - kicked off a new campaign to win American recruits Sunday afternoon in this Chicago suburb. Nearly 300 people packed the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel for its Khalifah Conference on The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam to listen to listen to HT ideologues blame capitalism for World War I and World War II; the U.S. subprime mortgage meltdown; the current violence in Iraq and Afghanistan; world poverty and malnutrition and inner-city drug use.A speaker identified as Abu Atallah even blamed capitalism for the late singer Michael Jackson's decision to shed his black skin.Hizb ut-Tahrir aims to restore the Caliphate that existed during the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk abolished it in 1924 in an effort to create a secular, Europeanized state.Security at the conference was very tight. Oak Lawn police maintained a checkpoint outside the Hilton, and local police and HT's own security people had a substantial presence inside the hotel. In the ballroom where the conference took place, men and women were largely segregated, with men in the front and women in the back. This became a significant point of contention between HT supporters and several members of the audience who objected to this arrangement. At one point, an unidentified Hizb ut-Tahrir speaker became flustered over this line of questioning.Men and women,he blurted out, must be kept separate to prevent people from behaving like animals.A woman in the audience responded: How does intermingling between men and women make you animals? HT panelists didn't have a persuasive answer, and soon adjourned that session.The conference was sometimes poorly organized. There was no list of speakers, forcing reporters to sometimes guess at the spelling of speakers' names. But HT certainly appeared to be serious about working for the larger goals of the conference: abolishing capitalism and imposing Caliphate rule over the world.

According to Hizb ut-Tahrir, the world's social and economic problems will not be fixed until the world is governed by Shariah and the government controls all major industries. Lenders would no longer be able to charge interest, which one speaker decried as a poisonous concept.Charity, or zakat, was advertised as the way to alleviate economic inequality.Secular capitalism has made me devalue my skin and has kept my family in ghettos,said one speaker, an African-American who went on to blame it for the fact that he smoked marijuana and his grandmother played the lottery. Capitalism, he added, is a form of economic terrorism and causes us to be sent to mental hospitals.Barack Obama's presidency, he said,is only a scheme or con to trick people into thinking that things will get better under capitalism.But time and again on Sunday, Hizb ut-Tahrir officials seemed to be playing slippery rhetorical games of their own - particularly when it came to the behavior of despotic Muslim regimes and terrorists. When a few skeptical audience members pressed speakers over the fact that Islamic governments in Iran and Saudi Arabia are despotic, conference speakers claimed those weren't authentic Muslim governments and that the CIA (and by implication, the capitalist U.S. government) was to blame for the problems in those countries. In an interview with WBBM-TV in Chicago, HT deputy spokesman Mohammad Malkawi refused to specifically condemn Al Qaida and the Taliban.Hizb ut-Tahrir has not been designated a terrorist group by the U.S. government and it insists it is only interested in instituting radical change by nonviolent means. But HT's alumni include 9/ll mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the late Iraqi terrorist leader Abu Musab Zarqawi and would-be Hamas suicide bombers, and the group's pro-jihadist rhetoric has led critics to label it a conveyor belt for terrorists.One Muslim American group issued a statement in advance of the conference condemning Hizb ut-Tahrir's radical ideology and challenging others to follow suit.Hizb ut-Tahrir preaches an ideology that calls for the destruction of the principles that America is founded on,said Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American-Islamic Forum for Democracy. While their words are protected by our First Amendment, their actions and movement must not be allowed to take hold. The silence of American Islamist organizations like [the Council on American-Islamic Relations] CAIR and [the Islamic Society of North America] ISNA in condemning the ideologies of Hizb ut-Tahrir and their agenda of insurgency in America speaks volumes to their own, albeit, more camouflaged Islamist agenda.HT's efforts to rehabilitate its image won't be helped by the menacing tone on display Sunday. That's all.Imam: Yes, as Muslims they would be long gone.While Hizb ut-Tahrir's controversial message attracted demonstrators and some media attention, the group at least is open about its ambitions. It not only is determined to destroy capitalism — it would shred the United States Constitution as well in favor of Shariah law.

Major General Julian Thompson, victor in the Falklands and all-round good-egg, writes in the letters column of The Daily Telegraph today, asking whether the way to avoid casualties in Afghanistan was to follow the German, French and Spanish example and not fight? He goes on to add that the government obsession with a European defence identity has wasted money on Euro-projects, instead of buying cheaper, better equipment off the shelf. He is thus answering the rush of propaganda from Nick Clegg, Lib-Dim leader, who has been exploiting the equipment crisis in Afghanistan, arguing for greater European defence co-operation as a way of resolving the problems.He was, for instance, in full flow in The Independent on Saturday, asking: why is Britain dragging its feet on European defence co-operation that would allow us to pool resources with the French and others so we can get more bang for our bucks? As a very rough estimate, however, we calculated that excess costs arising out of European defence co-operation came to £8.8 billion, either in failed projects or excess costs. That would buy a ridiculous 35,000 RG-31 mine protected vehicles or 350 Chinook helicopters.Amongst the more egregious examples of waste were the Trigat projects - medium and long-range anti-tank missiles. British participation in these European projects (appropriately, developed by Euromissile) cost us over £314 million before we had to pull out after the systems failed to deliver, leaving the MoD with a total loss.

A rush purchase of US-built Javelin missiles had to be made to equip the Army, which now form a basic (if expensive) part of our armoury in Afghanistan.With not so much as a blush, though, Clegg tells us that our priorities must change for a rapidly changing world, so that we invest in what's most likely to be needed: helicopters, mine-resistant armoured vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, intelligence gathering systems, strategic airlift, as well as the more traditional effect of manpower.One wonders whether, in terms of strategic airlift he is thinking of that wonderful example of European co-operation, the A-400M. Clearly, that is the answer to all our problems.When it comes to mine-resistant armoured vehicles though, the French do have the answer (pictured top), which we would do well to emulate. In April this year, they had delivered to Afghanistan three US-built Buffalo route clearance vehicles, plus Husky mine detection vehicles (which they call Souvims).The vehicles were, incidentally, delivered in an Antonov 124 (pictured above), proudly announced by the French defence ministry, who seem to have no problems using this Russian-built strategic airlift. In fact, VAB armoured personnel carriers similar to that accompanying the Buffalo in the top picture were also delivered by an Antonov 124.

Peter Oborne challenges Cameron to speak out against Blair candidacy for EU President JULY 20,09

Open Europe's Lorraine Mullally discussed Tony Blair's candidature for the position of EU President live on Andrew Pierce's show on LBC radio on Sunday. She argued that the creation of a permanent EU President, as proposed by the Lisbon Treaty, would be a step backwards for democracy, since it will end the current system of rotating presidencies, whereby incumbent, democratically-elected prime ministers and presidents who have a mandate to rule get to set the agenda in Europe for six months at a time. Lorraine argued that it was fitting that the unelected, unaccountable Europe Minister Lady Kinnock should publicly back Blair for the unelected, unaccountable position of EU President.In the Independent on Sunday, John Rentoul argued that the position of EU President is in one sense... a ridiculous post,noting that the choice will not be made by the peoples of Europe, but by EU leaders acting by Qualified Majority Vote.Meanwhile, in Saturday's Mail, Peter Oborne noted that while Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague has spoken out against the idea of Blair becoming EU President, David Cameron has not expressed opposition and remains highly unlikely to do so.He reported that Cameron's colleagues argue that a Blair presidency would be good for Britain, and, moreover, that Tory strategists believe they stand a better chance in the next General Election if Labour didn't harness Blair's campaigning skills, and, instead, he concentrated on his European ambitions.However, Oborne called on Cameron to fulfil his responsibility to a wider sense of public decency and halt Blair in his tracks.Wolfgang Münchau, in an opinion piece for the FT, says that Blair's chances are better than people think, saying that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is still likely to back him, along with Italian PM Berlusconi, and Spanish PM Jose Luis Zapatero. He notes that although there are dissenters, Blair only needs a qualified majority under the Lisbon Treaty. Münchau questions Blair's ability for the job, saying that he would not have coped with the financial crisis last year and asking would Mr Blair have really stood up against the eruption of nationalism or would he have accentuated the divisions?

Strasbourg woos MEPs in new charm offensive

The host city of the European Parliament's plenary sessions has launched a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening its image as a symbol of post-war European reconciliation and fending off accusations that the assembly's monthly trek to Strasbourg is a waste of taxpayers' money.The overall costs – including buildings maintenance – reach about 200 million euros per year, according to Dr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, a former MEP. Over the five-year legislature, the totals amount to about one billion euros, he says.The decision to hold most of the Parliament's sessions in Strasbourg was laid down in a 1992 summit agreement, which was confirmed by the 1997 Amsterdam Treaty. Any decision to change it would require an amendment to the EU Treaties, a process which requires unanimity between all EU member states.As euro deputies were meeting for the first time this week for the Parliament’s opening plenary session in Strasbourg, the city launched a charm offensive to win the hearts of the new MEPs.Nawel Rafik-Elmrini, Strasbourg's deputy mayor in charge of European and international affairs, organised the distribution of welcome kits to provide the 736 newly-elected MEPs with information on how to get around the city.In June, a welcome desk was opened at the European Parliament's Brussels premises to help MEPs sort out practical aspects of their monthly commute to Strasbourg, including housing, transportation and tourism.Our objective is to show that the Strasbourg municipality is reaching out to MEPs and meeting them more regularly during their mandate,Rafik-Elmrini told a group of Brussels-based journalists last week.

Strengthening Strasbourg's European role

The city is also seeking to strengthen its European role by building bridges between the European Parliament and its elder relative, the Council of Europe. The two institutions are set to sign a convention in September, with common actions already launched in the area of education and a joint seminar organised in July between Eastern and Western university leaders on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Rafik-Elmrini said more contacts will be organised between the two institutions.It is true that there is almost a schism between the European Parliament and the Council of Europe,she admitted, adding that the municipality was working to redress this.The deputy mayor cited an initiative called The Strasbourg Dialogues, where members of both institutions discuss topics of common interest.This is the first stone towards establishing more contact between the two institutions, she admitted,but it is essential.The Council of Europe will again find itself at the centre of attention in the autumn with celebrations organised around the institution's 60th anniversary on 1 October, in the presence of former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been invited to attend.Rafik-Elmrini said Strasbourg's European strategy was also built around the Strasbourg Club, an initiative launched in 2003 and aimed at reinforcing links between urban areas in western and eastern parts of Europe. The club now includes the mayors of 35 cities, including Warsaw, Bratislava, Sofia and Bucharest. Meetings are organised on a regular basis and are aimed at building bridges between the EU's old and new members.

President Obama will attend the controversial Security and Prosperity Partnership meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper next month, it has been revealed.The White House had not responded to requests to verify Obama’s schedule during the second week of August, however, a statement from Press Secretary Robert Gibbs titled Upcoming Travel by the President, confirms that Obama will attend the recently re-branded North American Leader’s Summit in Mexico.The president will travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, August 9-10 to attend the North American Leaders Summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper,the announcement, reported by World Net Daily, states.

The summit meeting will provide an opportunity for the United States, Mexico, and Canada to engage on a broad range of issues, including economic recovery and competitiveness in North America, our shared interest in energy and the environment, and cooperation among our governments to promote the safety and welfare of our citizens, including continued close cooperation to counter the A/H1N1 influenza pandemic.the statement continues.The Security and Prosperity Partnership has become much maligned owing to it’s quasi secretive advancement of a North American integration agenda.Last year, one month prior to the meeting in April, documents were uncovered relating the fact that heads of state of the U.S., Mexico and Canada were beseeching business leaders to launch public relations campaigns in order to counter critics of the SPP.The documents detailed how corporate representatives were urged to humanize North American integration, promote NAFTA success stories to employees and unions and evolve the harmonization agenda without fueling protectionism.The move was seemingly a response to the continued exposition of the integration agenda, which led to representatives within Congress petitioning the government on the secretiveness of the SPP and multiple states introducing resolutions calling on their federal representatives to halt work on the so called North American Union.During his nomination campaign, Obama pledged to end the secrecy surrounding the SPP meetings and to conduct them with full transparency.His decision to remain silent on whether or not he will even attend the meeting until just a few weeks beforehand has guaranteed advance criticism.Critics will also cast a keen eye over Obama’s attendance given his strong worded campaign pledge to amend NAFTA in favor of American workers by stemming the loss of manufacturing jobs.

Since he has entered office Obama has simply reiterated the SPP’s call to advance without stoking protectionism. In a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, during his first official foreign visit, Obama responded to a question regarding the renegotiation of NAFTA by saying Now is a time where we have to be very careful about any signs of protectionism.Eyebrows were also raised when Obama temporarily removed economist Austan Goolsbee from his staff when it was revealed that Goolsbee had told Canadian officials that Obama’s campaign promises to renegotiate NAFTA were purely campaign rhetoric.

Monthly Strasbourg trek healthy for EU

Asked about the necessity of keeping the Parliament's monthly trek to Strasbourg, Rafik-Elmrini was uncompromising. For us, this is unquestionable. The city has an historic and legal legitimacy which is written down in the EU treaties, she said. History carries a weight which is still relevant today,she added, referring to Strasbourg's image as a symbol of European post-war reconciliation.MEPs spend most of their time in Brussels where the European Parliament holds its political group and committee meetings, but EU treaties require them to hold at least twelve plenary sessions per year in Strasbourg, where votes are held.The total costs are estimated at around 200 million euros per year.This so-called travelling circus has come under fire from MEPs themselves, with a group of parliamentarians pushing for relocating the assembly full-time to Brussels. The One Seat campaign gathered one million signatures, which were presented to the Commission in 2006 (EurActiv 21/09/06 ).But Rafik-Elmrini is unapologetic, insisting that the EU institutions' dispersion outside Brussels is healthy. One has to avoid the concentration and centralisation of powers, which never was in the spirit of the EU treaties,she points out. This polycentricism is healthy for the EU,she adds, arguing that it even allows for greater clarity between the different roles of the EU institutions.Brussels decides, Luxembourg judges and Strasbourg adopts,she said.The Europe of Strasbourg is not in contradiction with the Europe of Brussels,according to the deputy mayor. On the contrary, they are fully complementary.

Cost Of Bailout Hits A Whopping $24 Trillion Dollars

According to the watchdog overseeing the federal government’s financial bailout program, the full exposure since 2007 amounts to a whopping $23.7 trillion dollars, or $80,000 for every American citizen.The last time we were able to get a measure of the total cost of the bailout, it stood at around $8.5 trillion dollars. Eight months down the line and that figure has almost tripled.The $23.7 trillion figure comprises about 50 initiatives and programs set up by the Bush and Obama administrations as well as by the Federal Reserve, according to the Associated Press.In testimony which will be delivered to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee tomorrow, Neil Barofsky, the inspector general for the TARP, will tell Congress that “the Treasury Department has repeatedly failed to adopt recommendations aimed at making the TARP program more accountable and transparent.According to Barofsky, taxpayers are in the dark as to who has received the money and what they are doing with it.

As we have repeatedly highlighted, the destination of some $2 trillion in TARP funds was the subject of a lawsuit filed by Bloomberg late last year after the Fed refused to disclose the recipients. The suit is still ongoing as Bloomberg attempts to discover names of private financial institutions that received the money.The American people will ultimately pick up the tab as their dollar is devalued because the Fed lends the money from its own balance sheet or essentially just prints more money, as a San Francisco Chronicle article explained last year.Wages will not keep pace with inflation and if we add to the equation the raft of new taxes being introduced by the Obama administration, the consequences are clear – another lowering of the living standard for millions of middle class Americans.Meanwhile, Henry Paulson, one of the chief architects of the bailout and the man who committed financial terrorism by threatening the Congress with martial law and food riots if they didn’t pass the initial TARP package, brazenly pockets $200,000 in Goldman Sachs profits tax free while handing out billions in ill-gotten gains to his bankster buddies, all this after he pulled a bait and switch by changing the entire focus of the bailout from buying up toxic debt to giving money directly to financial institutions.We dread to think what the bailout figure will be in another eight months. Will it triple again to $70 trillion dollars? How about $100 trillion dollars? The only thing that can bring an end to the wanton looting is Ron Paul’s bill to audit the Fed, which has received overwhelming support in the House but is being blocked by the bought and paid for traitors in the Senate who would rather see a continuation of the grand larceny rather than real accountability and transparency.

New report says EU's carbon emissions trading system is seriously flawed JULY 20,09

The Guardian reports that a new study by campaign group Sandbag has described the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which is at the heart of the low-carbon plan announced by the Government last week, as critically flawed. The ETS covers 50% of the UK and EU's carbon emissions, mainly in the energy, cement, steel, glass and manufacturing sectors.The report found that the large number of carbon permits that have been allocated and a fall in emissions due to the recession, have made the trading system less effective because the price of emitting carbon is not high enough. The study has found that these so-called hot-air carbon credits could be sold as windfall profits, raising £5bn at current prices, or banked for the next period, depressing the future price.The ETS price for a tonne of CO2 at the close of the market on Friday was €14. To make it economical for generators to switch from coal to less-polluting gas for electricity production requires a carbon price of around €25, while carbon capture and storage technology needs a price of €40-€50 a tonne to be worth investing in. The EU is expected to call on other countries to develop similar models to the ETS at December's UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.

UNITED NATIONS – The chairman of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said Monday that the Group of Eight nations had clearly ignored taking any concrete action to accomplish its new goal of limiting climate change.Rajendra Pachauri, whose scientific panel shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former vice president Al Gore in 2007, praised the G-8 summit in Italy this month for taking a big step forward by agreeing to limit the planet's average temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above levels recorded 150 years ago.He faulted the world's wealthiest countries, however, because he said they clearly ignored what the IPCC came up with to reach that goal.It's interesting that the G-8 leaders agreed on this aspirational goal of (limiting) a temperature increase of (no more than) 2 degrees Celsius, which certainly is a big step forward in my view,he told reporters at U.N. headquarters.But what I find as a dichotomy in this position is the fact that they clearly ignored what the IPCC came up with.The question of which nations will agree to limit their heat-trapping gases mainly from fossil fuels is taking on increasing urgency at the United Nations, which is sponsoring the key round of talks in December to achieve a climate deal in Copenhagen, Denmark. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has made it his No. 1 priority to persuade nations to agree to a successor treaty to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol for reducing greenhouse gases, which expires at the end of 2012.Pachauri said the G-8 leaders also should have accepted the panel's conclusion that greenhouse gas emissions must peak no later than 2015 and then rich countries must reduce emissions from 2005 levels by between 25 percent and 40 percent by 2020. Doing that, climate scientists say, may help the world avoid the worst effects of warming, which they say will lead to widespread drought, floods, higher sea levels and worsening storms.

Now if the G-8 leaders agreed on this 2 degree increase as being the limit that could be accepted, then I think they should have also accepted the attendant requirement of global emissions peaking by 2015,he said.And if that were to be the case, then they should most categorically have said that ... by 2020 there would have to be deep cuts in emissions.He said it also would have been helpful if they had also spelled out what these deep cuts would be, but I'm afraid they haven't talked either about the deep cuts.Pachauri, who also is director-general of India-based TERI, The Energy and Resources Institute, praised President Barack Obama for making it a priority of his administration to achieve a climate deal in Copenhagen. The Bush administration had been opposed to the Kyoto climate pact, saying it would harm the U.S. economy and unfairly excluded cuts by developing nations such as India and China — the latter of which is overtaking the U.S. as the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitter.On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. and India had at least acknowledged their different perspectives on climate change. An Indian official told Clinton that India won't accept limits on its greenhouse gases.

Spain to Discuss Gibraltar Sovereignty with Britain By LISA ABEND / MADRID – JULY 20,09

As instances of reconciliation go, it lacks the momentous significance of the Camp David talks. But when Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos sits down for trilateral talks with his British and Gibraltarian counterparts on July 21, it will represent a small milestone in a centuries-old conflict. For the first time in 300 years, a Spanish minister will set foot on the Rock. It's a historic moment,says Alejandro de Valle, a professor of international law at the University of CÁdiz in Spain.And it meets a deep need.Ever since the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht gave Britain sovereignty over the craggy outcrop that juts from the southern edge of Andalusia, Spain has been trying to win Gibraltar back. And Gibraltar, which has voted to maintain British sovereignty, isn't happy about it. Over the centuries, the conflict has taken the form of a handful of failed sieges, a 1960s appeal by Spain to the U.N. to include Gibraltar in its decolonization measures, and endless expressions of outrage over everything from docked nuclear submarines to a visit from Princess Anne. The 2006 creation of a Tripartite Forum for Dialogue among the governments of Spain, Britain and Gibraltar has reduced the levels of hostility, but only slightly. Just how slightly was made clear when Moratinos' visit was nearly canceled over the thorny issue of territorial waters. The longtime dispute - Britain claims the first three nautical miles around the peninsula, while Spain holds those waters to be its own - flared anew in May when the European Commission, at Madrid's behest, designated some of those waters as a marine conservation area under Spain's jurisdiction. Gibraltar appealed the decision, decrying it as a breach of international law and warning that it threatened to upset plans for the upcoming Tripartite meeting (dialogues previously took place in Granada and London).This is an additional banana skin thrown by Spain at the feet of the [negotiations] process,declared Gibraltar Chief Minister Peter Caruana. Caruana hardly furthered the meeting's cause himself, however, when one week before its scheduled start, he issued a public statement reminding local boat owners that despite the European Commission's environmental ruling, Spain has no police jurisdiction in Gibraltar's waters and so all requests by Spanish authorities within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters to board vessels ... should be refused.The call to what some Spaniards saw as open rebellion threw the talks into disarray; the Spanish press reported on Thursday, July 16, that diplomatic sources saw little likelihood of the meeting's going ahead. But by late Friday, it was back on again. A source within the Spanish Foreign Ministry declined to say how exactly the issue was resolved, but Dominique Searle, editor of the Gibraltar daily the Chronicle, believes Spain took a pragmatic approach.It's my impression that they refused to change the demarcation [of waters] but agreed that they wouldn't act upon it.De Valle believes that kind of pragmatism is exactly what is needed from the Tripartite Forum talks, whose program includes discussions of visas, financial regulations, education and, yes, the environment.There's an absolute void there, so when you have a catastrophe like the New Flame [a cargo ship that collided with an oil tanker and sank off the Gibraltar coast in 2007], any initiative by anyone only produces more conflict,he says.In that sense, any agreement that comes out of the talks will be better than what there is now, which is nothing.Pragmatism may also well influence the reception Moratinos receives when he becomes the first Spanish Foreign Minister to visit Gibraltar since Don Diego de Salinas and his downtrodden troops surrendered to British forces in 1704. Although one political party on the Rock has urged locals to fly the British and Gibraltar flags as a display of their inalienable right to self-determination,Searle doesn't expect much in the way of open hostility.In the end, the meeting came on short notice,he says.And we're very deep into summer.

Brussels set to rule out milk quota changes

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission is refusing to bow to demands by farmers to cut milk quotas and is instead set to investigate whether big retailers are abusing their market power over farmers and processors.Recent months have seen several EU capitals filled with dairy farmers protesting milk prices which have halved since 2007 and are now at a record low. Farmers say that cutting quotas would boost prices, with the average price at 24 cents a litre - approximately 16 cents less than it used to be. In May, some 1,000 farmers gathered in front of the EU headquarters to protest the falling milk prices (Photo: EUobserver)But the EU's executive body appears reluctant to yield to pressure by farmers.According to a report to be unveiled on Wednesday (22 July), seen by EUobserver, Brussels is set to exclude ideas such as a five percent quota reduction or a freeze on quota increases as it would slow down the envisaged reform of the sector. Putting this policy into doubt would only create uncertainty, delay the restructuring process and render no service to the many dairy producers,reads the document to be presented by EU agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.The EU agreed last year that production ceilings would increase by one percent each year until they are completely scrapped in 2015. Currently, total milk production stands at some four percent below the overall quota as the demand for milk has weakened both in the EU and on the world market.Ms Fischer Boel in May argued that what farmers need to do is produce less because there's a lower demand - an unpopular opinion in agricultural circles.

According to Romuald Schaber, the head of the European Milk Board, it is incomprehensible to see such rigidity on the side of the commission. Speaking to AFP (21 July), Mr Schaber suggested setting up voluntary production limits.It would cost three times less than to leave things as they are today, producing a surplus that has to be bought artificially and then put into storage after,he added.

Farmers prices versus consumer prices

The European Commission claims that to date it has adopted rescue measures - such as export refunds or intervention buying of butter and skim milk powder - to the tune of €350 million. The possibility of digging deeper into EU coffers in 2010-2011 seems quite limited,it says.But it indicates it wants to fight low milk prices by shedding more light on price transmission between producers, processors and retailers.A permanent Europe-wide system for monitoring food prices could be set up,the commission paper says.According to one Czech farmer speaking to journalists during the June protest in Luxembourg (22 June),It is necessary to find a European solution to the problem.The supermarkets must be leashed if we want to avoid someone firing another salvo from Aurora,he added referring to the cruiser Aurora that signalled start of the 1917 Russian Revolution. The commission's data suggest that the prices of milk and dairy commodities have largely dropped since the end of 2007 - for example by 39 percent for butter or by 31 percent for milk. On the other hand, the consumers have seen only a slight price decline of some two percent. Even if milk is only one of the costs in the consumer price of dairy products, the magnitude and asymmetry in the downward adjustment of dairy consumer prices clearly shows that the EU dairy supply chain does not function efficiently,the report says.

Cyprus remains tough on Turkey's EU talks

Cyprus will continue to block Turkey's EU talks until Ankara stops acting like a neighbourhood bully by preventing Nicosia's efforts to exploit the island's energy sources, Cypriot foreign minister said on the day of the 35th anniversary of Turkey's invasion.The energy chapter can't open when Turkey tries to impede Cyprus, an EU member state, from utilizing its own energy sources,Marcos Kyprianou, the foreign minister and ex-European commissioner for the Mediterranean island of 800,000 inhabitants told reporters on Monday (20 July).Speaking after a meeting with his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos in Nicosia, Mr Kyprianou said: It's up to Turkey. If it pledges to behave like a modern state in the 21st century that wants to join the EU and makes those necessary actions, Cyprus will then have no reason to raise objections,reports AFP.But as long as it behaves like the neighbourhood bully, then certainly Cyprus cannot give its consent.Energy is one of the areas covered by the EU's membership negotiation process, launched with Turkey in 2005. The process has been moving very slowly since, mainly due to various disputes with Nicosia as well as opposition from some of the bloc's heavyweights, such as Germany and France, to Turkey joining the EU as a full member.The energy clash between Cyprus and Turkey was sparked by Nicosia's attempts to explore oil reserves off its southern coast and Ankara's threats that Turkey will naturally defend its legal rights and interests in the wider maritime region.Ankara also insists that Turkish Cypriots on the north of the divided island should benefit from the energy resources in the Mediterranean Sea which Nicosia rejects.

For its part, Cyprus has protested at EU and UN forums over provocations by Turkish naval vessels attempting to impede oil exploration off its southern coast. Cyprus, as other countries in the region, has determined its exclusive economic zone based on international law, the law of the sea specifically,Mr Kyprianou said on Monday.We will investigate Turkey's intentions and will make all necessary representations,he noted, adding that it is Turkey's obligation to normalise relations with countries in the region and peacefully solve any differences, and of course this includes Cyprus, a Cypriot website Financial Mirror reported.Later this year, the Cypriot government is expected to launch a second round of hydrocarbon exploration licences for some of the 12 offshore blocks, while Texas-based US firm Noble Energy has been granted a licence to search for oil in the area, AFP reports. Cyprus has also signed deals with Egypt and Lebanon on mutual exploitations of hydrocarbon deposits that cross their boundaries.From the EU's perspective, Turkey is viewed as a key ally in future energy co-operation that could help break away the bloc's energy dependence on Russia.

Controversial anniversary

The energy dispute between Nicosia and Ankara re-emerged on the day of the 35th anniversary of Turkey's invasion of the island, which took place five days after a brief Greek-inspired coup in 1974.The controversial event was marked by Greek Cypriot air raid sirens across a United Nations-controlled ceasefire line in Cyprus's south.

The Greek and Turkish Cypriots are currently trying to revive the reunification talks resumed last September which Ankara strongly supports as its EU membership bid is also indirectly connected with the longterm dispute.In 2006, the EU decided to block eight negotiating areas from further discussion due to Ankara's failure to meet its commitments regarding Cyprus, notably its refusal to allow Cypriot ships and planes into Turkish ports and airspace.For its part, Turkey maintains that Europe has also not fulfilled its own promises regarding expanded links with the de facto independent republic of Northern Cyprus, after Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of the UN peace plan for re-unification of the island in 2004, just before Cyprus was to join the EU.

Greek Cypriots living on the southern part of the island voted down the proposal, which resulted in the island entering the union divided divided with the northern part, which is recognised only by Turkey, left behind and outside the EU.

Citigroup seizes resort where AIG held retreat JULY 20,09

DANA POINT, Calif. – A Southern California resort where American International Group Inc. sponsored a luxury retreat after receiving federal bailout money has been seized by Citigroup.The owners of the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point were in default on a $70 million loan from a real estate unit of Citigroup Inc., resulting in the takeover.Citigroup said last month it would sell the property at a foreclosure auction. However, when no bidders came forward, the bank and the owners agreed to let Citigroup take ownership without that formal step.The 400-room hotel will continue to operate as a St. Regis. China Seeks to Dethrone the Dollar, Transforming the Yuan into the Dominant Global Currency By Keith Fitz-Gerald Investment Director Money Morning/The Money Map Report JULY 20,09

China has taken yet another step to transform the yuan into the dominant global currency, a long-term initiative that could ultimately dethrone the dollar as the world’s top unit of exchange.In the last four months alone, China has signed currency swap agreements worth more than $95 billion (650 billion yuan) with an array of nations - including: Argentina, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Belarus and Hong Kong - that are only too glad to move away from the increasingly shaky U.S. dollar.

For Westerners who are struggling to come to terms with the notion of a disarrayed dollar, the thought of oil, gold or other commodities being priced in yuan instead of dollars has to seem about as likely as having another country put a man on the moon.

But the Chinese yuan is already well on its way to becoming that globally accepted standard unit of exchange and the proverbial genie, as they say, is out of the bottle. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say the dollar’s days of dominance are numbered and with each new round of bailout chicanery, the clock is winding down ever faster.

Asia’s Long-Term View
In such Asian markets as Japan, Hong Kong and Mainland China, the long-term planning that’s an anathema to Corporate America is actually standard fare. During the height of Japan’s dominance in the 1980s, the Western business press - with a touch of derision - wrote about how some Japanese companies routinely formulated business plans with durations of 100 years or more (while working in Asia early in my career, I actually even contributed to several such plans … but that’s another story for another time).That’s neither here nor there to most people who note smugly that Japan is getting its comeuppance. But what they don’t understand is that Japan is not alone. In fact, many people I talk with are shocked to learn that at a time when the West is still busy handing out Band-Aids in an attempt to deal with the greatest financial crisis on record, China has been quietly and shrewdly reinventing itself with the same kind of long-term vision.Take commodities, for example. While companies in the United States, Great Britain and Europe are being forced to shed promising assets in order to compensate for massive losses or to pay down debt, cash-rich China has been able to operate as a buyer in a buyer’s market. While the rest of the world has interpreted this as a sign that China’s interested in buying the things it needs to grow, what they have not understood is that China’s also interested in using physical assets as a source of currency that offsets an increasingly eviscerated U.S. dollar.This is actually a double-whammy of sorts, for while the rest of the world has been grappling with the global slowdown, China has been locking up supplies of commodities that are only going to become more scarce (and more valuable) as global demand escalates.In fact, as I’ve suggested for months, now, China isn’t just going to consume those assets; it’s going to use them as part of the same long-term vision it’s been staking out with regard to its own currency, the yuan, which it fully intends to boost in status to the point where it becomes an internationally accepted currency.

The Once-Dominant Dollar
That’s quite a turn of events.

Even now, despite the travails of the U.S. economy, the dollar remains the world’s most widely held reserve currency and, as such, is the standard unit of exchange in most international transactions. In fact, many non-U.S. firms (such as Airbus SAS) actually price their manufactured products in dollars. And the dollar is the de facto unit of pricing for such commodities as oil (hence the term petrodollar). Several countries even use it as their official currency.But the global financial crisis is threatening that dominance.

Credit Crisis Report.

The United States has already injected into the world economy trillions of dollars that are collectively worth more than 60% of this country’s entire gross domestic product (GDP). And the prospect of still more injections for California, GMAC LLC and other national interests is extremely worrisome - and not just to millions of Americans, either. If Washington stays on this path, the result will be a currency crisis the likes of which few are capable of imagining and a near-complete devaluation of the once-almighty U.S. dollar.Ironically, both events will only further embolden China, speeding up its efforts to boost the yuan’s international acceptance.

The New Yuan
While some experts may question Beijing’s motives, it’s hard to question China’s long-term strategic vision, since the country is actually being forced to take these steps that ensure its own survival. Unfortunately, our leaders in Washington don’t seem to understand this, so they’re only making matters worse - when they instead could be actively working with China and the world community on this instead of summarily ignoring the fact that the yuan may well be the world’s next reserve currency.At the very least, China’s currency is likely to be granted a global status on par with the current major currency trading pairs for purposes of settling international transactions, whether the West wants that to happen or not.I’ve outlined this scenario many times in recent years and, quite frankly, too often received blank stares in return. Most folks here in the West just aren’t prepared to deal with the idea that the U.S. dollar could be finished and that another currency could replace it after more than 60 years of global dominance. But they better get used to the idea - and in a hurry.China is acutely aware that not having international currency convertibility hampers both its development and - thanks to the ongoing financial crisis - its potential survival. Not only has China been forced to accept huge reserves built upon previous trade growth (its $2 trillion in reserves is an all-time record), but its own policies have contributed to its relative inability to flex its capital-market muscles. That’s especially true in transactions involving U.S. dollar/yuan exchange rates.What for us sounds quite theoretical in nature represents a very real problem for businessmen such as Dong Xianbin, the chairman of the Guangxi Sanhuan Enterprise Group Holding Co. Ltd. He estimates that he’s lost more than 150 million yuan (about $22 million at current exchange rates) on international trade in the past three years alone because of exchange rate changes between the dollar and the yuan. So he’s keen to see yuan-based transactions that will reduce exchange-rate risks, or eliminate them entirely. And he’s not alone. Thousands of Chinese companies are chomping at the bit for the same reasons.As a nation, not having a universally accepted currency is a huge issue. China’s record reserves are now at risk thanks to the U.S. government’s bailout boondoggle, because each new greenback printed debases the value of every other dollar out there, including the ones China holds.

Historically, Beijing sought to mitigate that risk by diversifying its holdings into other currencies most notably the European euro and the Swiss franc, for instance. But now China’s facing the kinds of problems that massive mutual funds closer to home must deal with when they hold a disproportionately large amount of money: China’s reserve fund is so massive that there’s literally no other single currency that can absorb all that liquidity. So even if China wanted to diversify more aggressively, it’s going to be hard pressed to do so.Incidentally, this is precisely why China’s so-called “nuclear option” will never become more than a theory bandied about by conspiracy buffs. Under such a scenario, China will either dump its dollars, and/or stop buying them, causing the value of the greenback to plummet. China might start selling, but there literally is not another currency on the planet that could absorb a wholesale liquidation.Therefore, the reality is that China needs to have the U.S. boost the value of the dollar - even as the United States needs to have China do all it can to maintain the dollar’s value.

Shopping for Commodities
At this point in time, China essentially has two alternatives:It can seek out other stores of value, such as natural resources, which are highly liquid and reasonably deep in global markets, but which can also be very volatile from a pricing standpoint. Or it can elevate the credibility of its own currency in the international financial markets and effectively remove the exchange rate risks associated with its own partially blocked yuan. Never one to leave anything to chance, China is pursuing both strategies. For instance, China’s been buying gold like there’s no tomorrow - and is looking to add to its holdings. Since 2003, China has boosted its holdings of gold by 73% to an estimated 1,054 metric tons, with an approximate value of $31.3 billion. This makes China the fifth-largest holder of gold on the planet, followed by the United States, Greater Europe, and Switzerland.China’s also gone global in its hunt for oil - which, of course, is the only other global currency truly in international demand.While there’s a real benefit to having locked up supplies of commodities, they aren’t an ideal store of value. And that suggests that what China really needs to do is elevate the global prominence of its own currency at the same time, whether U.S. leaders aid the process or not.History shows that strong economies tend to have strong currencies. And the actions that I’ve reported on recently from China - the cross-Straits agreements reached between China and Taiwan, the Hong Kong yuan-trade agreements and the yuan carry trade, to name a few - only reinforce the effort China is putting forth to achieve this goal.Speaking of goals … there are obviously plenty of Doubting Thomases on this issue - but they were around years ago before China announced that it wants to put a man on the moon by 2020.[Editor's Note: Money Morning Investment Director Keith Fitz-Gerald just recently completed his investing tour of China. Germany seeks extra cash as Opel deadline looms

Germany's economy minister has indicated that takeover plans for the struggling European car manufacturer, Opel, are still some way from being completed and that rival bidders must stump up more capital.There are still lots of question marks: for example the bidders have to ensure that the new Opel company can start with a strong capital base,Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told the Sunday newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.That means that the bidders have to be ready to take on more risk themselves. Otherwise the EU Commission will not accept the rescue,said Mr zu Guttenberg in an interview. Canadian auto parts supplier Magna, Belgian investment holding RHJ and Beijing Automotive (BAIC) are currently in a three-horse race to take over the firm from its US owner General Motors which recently said final bids must be in by close of business Monday (20 July).GM says it will then share its preliminary findings on the final bids later in the week with Germany and other European governments who are set to provide billions of euros in loans and guarantees to assist the takeover process and help save European jobs.

Rival bids

Until now, Magna has been seen as the frontrunner although recent entrants in the bidding race, BAIC and RHJ, are looking for €2.64 billion and €3.8 billion in state aid respectively, considerably less than the €4.5 billion Magna is seeking.However Mr zu Guttenberg indicated the size of the state aid requested would not be the only deciding factor when Berlin – which is set to put up the largest amount of money – decides which bidder it favours.That's too simple. What good is an offer that is cheap (to the taxpayers) if the return of the money is in question. The key will be if a concept is so sustainable that there is a high probability that the interest, fees and the money can be paid back,he said.Magna teamed up with state-owned Russian bank Sberbank and automaker GAZ in May to win initial support from the German government to take a stake in the European car company. But relations between Opel's owner GM and Magna have soured in recent weeks, opening the door for rival bidders BAIC and RHJ.RHJ has also been quick to engage with other European countries that contain GM plants aside from Germany.

Job losses?

Of the European governments involved, Germany has dominated takeover talks so far as 25,000 of GM's 54,500 European workers are based in the country. In the UK, roughly 5,500 workers currently work for Vauxhall, another of GM's brands in Europe.London has shown concern that German support for Opel could result in UK jobs being axed instead, whereas Belgium has similar worries over the Opel plant in the country's northern region of Flanders.A new slimed-down GM recently emerged from bankruptcy proceeding in the US having lost billions of dollars from the economic downturn.

Iceland's EU bid causes division in Germany

Centre-right politicians from Germany's Christian Social Union (CSU) have spoken out against Iceland's bid to join the European Union.The EU cannot play saviour to Iceland's economic crisis,Markus Ferber, head of the CSU's members of the European parliament, told Suedduetsche newspaper over the weekend.We should discuss the structure of the EU before we discuss expanding it,said Alexander Dobrindt, General Secretary of the CSU, which is the smaller sister party to German chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union.The newspaper reports that the manifesto for both parties for the 27 September general election will indirectly oppose further EU enlargement, with the exception of Croatia.The comments came as Iceland's parliament on Thursday narrowly agreed to make a bid for EU membership, a move that was immediately welcomed by the European Commission.Enlargement has long been a sensitive issue among centre-right politicians in Germany, who are particularly opposed to Turkey joining the bloc.The rhetoric increased in the run-up to the last month's European elections and is continuing ahead of September's vote.The election campaigning also comes at a sensitive time in German-EU relations following a wide-reaching court verdict outlining relations between the country and the 27-nation bloc.

One of the consequences of the verdict will be a strengthened law on parliamentary oversight of EU integration beyond the Lisbon Treaty. The CSU, which is angling to get the law to give German MPs a say over all of Berlin's negotiations in Brussels, also wants the legislation to state that further enlargement should only be approved by referendum.The issue is one of several differences between the CSU and the governing CDU. German commentators suggest the CSU is testing to see if euroscepticism, until now almost a taboo in the country, is a vote winner.

Iceland's EU bid

Iceland's bid has also served to highlight how slowly progress towards the EU is for Western Balkan countries and Turkey.Having taken on most of EU legislation through being a member of the European Economic Area and the bloc's borderless zone, actual negotiations with Iceland are expected to be rapid, except in the sensitive area of fishing rights.However, Berlin and Paris have both made clear that there should be no further enlargement of the EU until its new rules, the Lisbon Treaty, are in force - ratification has yet to be completed in four countries.It is also unclear whether the EU as a whole would accept that Iceland joins before Croatia, whose bid has been stalled due to a border dispute with Slovenia. Zagreb had been hoping to join in 2011, a date that now looks unlikely.But even if negotiations with Reykjavik proceed quickly, Icelanders themselves will have the final say over EU membership in a referendum.

In a hare-brained nightmare scenario dreamed up by the Center for Strategic and International Studies — home-base for neocon crackpots such as Michael Ledeen and war criminals of Madeleine Albright’s caliber — Iran manages to produce a nuclear weapon and drops it on Israel, ultimately killing 800,000 people. Retaliatory Israeli nuclear strikes, with higher-yield bombs and accurate rocket delivery systems, would be far more destructive,writes Peter Goodspeed for the National Post.A full-fledged Israeli nuclear response, using some, but not all, of its 200 nuclear weapons, would target most major Iranian cities and major military bases. It would kill 16 million to 28 million people within three weeks.Fallout From Nuclear Attack on Natanz and Isfahan. With scale showing levels of radiation exposure. Over a few days, exposure at greater than 10 rems per hour will cause death, and at 1 rem per hour exposures lead to radiation sickness.It is estimated Israel has around 400 nuclear weapons. As Israeli arms technician Mordecai Vanunu revealed in 1986, the Israelis have produced 100 to 200 advanced fission bombs and have mastered a thermonuclear design. In 1986, it appeared to have a number of thermonuclear bombs ready for use. According to the Institute for Defense Analyses, Israel’s facilities at Soreq and Dimona have the same mission as the Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge National Laboratories in the United States. More than twenty years ago, Israel was developing the computer codes which will enable them to make hydrogen bombs.Meanwhile, Iran is not up to speed, never mind the scary science fiction story weaved by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Iran did manage to enrich a small amount of uranium using a cascade of 164 centrifuges that spin uranium hexafluoride gas at supersonic speed. The enriched uranium that Iran produced cannot be used in a nuclear weapon because it contains just 3.5% U-235, whereas a nuclear weapon typically requires highly-enriched uranium that contains more than 90% U-235.

Never mind highly-enriched uranium – Iran has problems with low-enriched uranium. Earlier this year, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran had badly underestimated previous assessments of how much low-enriched material it had produced. The IAEA stressed that technical constraints and equipment inefficiencies would prevent Iran from further refining the low-enriched uranium into an adequate supply of weapon-grade material.However, this has not stopped Israel and the neocons from hysterically claiming Iran has enough enriched uranium fissionable material to manufacture at least one or two atom bombs of the Hiroshima type,as Uri Dan wrote for the Jerusalem Post in early 2006. If it didn’t have the nuclear material for a couple crude bombs,Iranian President Ahmadinejad would not have dared come out with his declaration that Israel should be wiped off the map,claims Rafi Eitan, key architect of Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and the Mossad (the operative motto for Mossad is: By way of deception, thou shalt do war,according to Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad agent).As it turns out, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not call for Israel to be wiped off the map,as Eitan, the neocons, and most of the corporate media (most notably the New York Times) repeatedly and dishonestly claim. Ahmadinejad’s speech was deliberately mistranslated by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute, a Mossad front masquerading as a news service. Starting with Juan Cole, and going via the New York Times’ experts through MEMRI to the BBC’s monitors, the consensus is that Ahmadinejad did not talk about any maps,Jonathan Steele wrote for the Guardian in June, 2006. Ahmadinejad did not talk attacking Israel. He made a vague wish for the end of political Zionism — which is, of course, for some the same as attacking Israel with a nuclear bomb.The ludicrous Center for Strategic and International Studies report — coauthored by the former director of intelligence assessment in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Anthony Cordesman — has appeared in the wake of the dismal failure by Israeli and U.S. intelligence to sabotage the Iranian elections and foment a color revolution.It is also designed to coincide with Israel’s provocative Red Sea military exercises that are a rehearsal for an attack on Iran. Defense experts in Israel said … that the naval activity had been publicized with the intent of sending a message to Iran,the Telegraph reported last week.

In the real world, the only nuclear threat in the Middle East is the one posed by Israel. If Israel follows through on its threat — increasingly likely with the passing of each week — to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, the result will be catastrophic. In the aftermath of an attack,huge amounts of radioactive material will be lofted into the air to contaminate the people of Iran and surrounding countries, explains Dr. Helen Caldicott, who consulted with an eminent international authority on nuclear weapons.This fallout will induce cancers, leukemia, and genetic disease in these populations for years to come, both a medical catastrophe and a war crime of immense proportions,she writes in her book, Nuclear Power Is Not The Answer, published in 2007. She cites the example of Chernobyl.Finally, as analysts note, conventional weapons will not be effective against Iran’s underground nuclear materials storage site and uranium conversion plant at Isfahan and the underground uranium enrichment plant at Natanz. Iranian officials have acknowledged the Isfahan facility is specifically designed to be impervious to conventional attack, making it a prime nuclear target. The Natanz plant is buried between 18 and 23 meters below the surface, making it a difficult target for conventional attack. For this scenario, we modeled attacks, each with three B61-11 earth-penetrating nuclear weapons set to explode with a yield of 340kt. Meteorological models in the HPAC were used to determine the distribution pattern of fallout, write Physicians for Social Responsibility.From our map [above] we can see that within 48 hours, fallout would cover much of Iran, most of Afghanistan and spread on into Pakistan and India. Fallout from the use of a burrowing weapon such as the B61-11 would be worse than from a surface or airburst weapon, due to the extra radioactive dust and debris ejected from the blast site. In the immediate area of the two attacks, our calculations show that within 48 hours, an estimated 2.6 million people would die.In the wider area, over 10.5 million people would be exposed to significant radiation from fallout.In the immense fallout zone, very few people would have access to adequate medical care, increasing the potential number of casualties of an attack. From studies conducted after the use of nuclear weapons against Japan we know that there would also be a severe psychological trauma for the affected population, which would further exacerbate negative health outcomes for attack victims.The Saudis are taking the threat seriously. In 2008, the Saudi Shura Council — comprised of an elite group making decisions for the autocratic inner circle — prepared national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts’ warnings of possible attacks on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactors, according to the kingdom’s leading newspaper, Okaz. In September of 2008, Israel also began preparing civilians for the inevitability of radiation exposure.Israel and the United States are ready to accept this massive death toll and radioactive contamination in order to send a message to Iran. In addition to millions of initial deaths, an Israeli attack – naturally conducted with U.S. participation — would deal a death blow to the global economy and kick off a third world war (the neocons like to call this the fourth world war,the third being the so-called Cold War).
