Attenborough warns on population APR 14,09

Sir David began presenting natural history programmes in 1954 ,The broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has become a patron of a group seeking to cut the growth in human population. On joining the Optimum Population Trust, Sir David said growth in human numbers was frightening. Sir David has been increasingly vocal about the need to reduce the number of people on Earth to protect wildlife. The Trust, which accuses governments and green groups of observing a taboo on the topic, say they are delighted to have Sir David as a patron.

Fraught area

Sir David, one of the BBC's longest-standing presenters, has been making documentaries on the natural world and conservation for more than half a century. In a statement issued by the Optimum Population Trust he is quoted as saying: I've never seen a problem that wouldn't be easier to solve with fewer people, or harder, and ultimately impossible, with more. The Trust, which was founded in 1991, campaigns for the UK population to decrease voluntarily by not less than 0.25% a year. It has launched a Stop at Two online pledge to encourage couples to limit their family's size.Other patrons include Jonathan Porritt, chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, and Dame Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall institute.

BBC environment analyst Roger Harrabin said population was a fraught area of debate, with libertarians and some religious groups vehemently opposing measures by governments to influence individual fertility. In turn, the Trust accuses policy makers and environmentalists of conspiring in a silent lie that human numbers can grow forever with no ill-effects. In January 2009, Sir David revealed that he had received hate mail from viewers for not crediting God in his nature programmes. His most recent documentary focused on how Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution and why it remained important.

NKorea vows to restart nuclear reactor, end talks By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press Writer APR 14,09

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea vowed Tuesday to restart its nuclear reactor and to boycott international disarmament talks for good in retaliation for the U.N. Security Council's condemnation of its rocket launch.Russia, voicing regret over the move, urged Pyongyang to return to the negotiating table. The Foreign Ministry called the U.N. statement legitimate and well-balanced, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said all sides must stick to the current disarmament process. China, the North's main ally, appealed for calm.In Washington, a senior U.S. official called the decision unfortunate. It will further isolate the North from the rest of the international community, and the North will have to deal with that, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.North Korea's denunciation of the council's hostile move came just hours after all 15 members, including Beijing and Moscow, unanimously agreed to condemn the April 5 launch as a violation of U.N. resolutions and to tighten sanctions against the regime. The U.N. statement, issued eight days after the launch, was weaker than the resolution Japan and the United States had pursued but still drew an angry response from Pyongyang, which called it unjust and a violation of international law.North Korea claims it sent a communications satellite into space as part of a peaceful bid to develop its space program. The U.S. and others call the launch an illicit test of the technology used to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile, even one eventually destined for the U.S.

A Security Council resolution passed in 2006, days after North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test, prohibits Pyongyang from engaging in any ballistic missile-related activity — including launching rockets that use the same delivery technology as missiles mounted with warheads, Washington and other nations say.The council on Monday demanded an end to the rocket launches and said it will expand sanctions against the communist nation. The council also called for quick resumption of disarmament talks.President Barack Obama called the statement a clear and united message that North Korea's action was unlawful and would result in real consequences, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.North Korea, following through on earlier threats to withdraw from international disarmament talks if the council so much as criticized the launch, announced Tuesday it would boycott the 5 1/2-year-old negotiations hosted by China. The six-party talks have lost the meaning of their existence, never to recover, the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, declaring it would never participate in the talks again and is no longer bound to previous agreements.Since 2003, envoys from six nations — the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Russia and Japan — have been meeting in Beijing for sporadic negotiations on getting Pyongyang to give up its nuclear program in exchange for aid and other concessions.Under a 2007 six-party deal, North Korea agreed to disable its main nuclear complex in Yongbyon north of Pyongyang — a key step toward dismantlement — in return for 1 million tons of fuel oil and other concessions. Disablement began later that year.

In June 2008, North Korea famously blew up the cooling tower at Yongbyon in a dramatic show of its commitment to denuclearization. But disablement came to halt a month later as Pyongyang wrangled with Washington over how to verify its 18,000-page account of past atomic activities. The latest round of talks, in December, failed to push the process forward. On Tuesday, the North said it would restart nuclear facilities, an apparent reference to its plutonium-producing reactor at Yongbyon. North Korea already is believed to have enough plutonium to produce at least about half a dozen atomic bombs. One official at the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said agency inspectors remained onsite at Yongbyon. He asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue. Asked whether there had been any indication that the North was making good on its threats, he said only that the situation remained status quo. That suggests IAEA cameras and seals remained in place at the facility and that the inspectors continued their monitoring activities.

The Russian foreign minister said all sides must continue denuclearization through the six-party talks. Any new international forum to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula should not be created,Lavrov told a Moscow news conference. The negotiators of this forum have reached important agreements that impose obligations on all the parties, not only North Korea.Analyst Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University, called Pyongyang's move yet another tactic in the regime's bid to get Washington to the negotiating table outside the six-party framework. The U.N. statement humiliated North Korea internationally, and that's why North Korea angrily reacted to it,said Atsuhito Isozaki, assistant professor of North Korean politics at Keio University in Japan.Since China and Russia supported the statement, North Korea feels betrayed. However, Prof. Yoo Ho-yeol of Korea University in Seoul said Pyongyang will find it difficult to boycott the talks entirely, since that would only serve to further isolate the impoverished country, one of the world's poorest.

China appealed for calm.

We hope the relevant parties will proceed from the overall interest, exercise calmness and restraint,Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday. South Korea, expressing deep regret, also decided Tuesday to fully join the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative, a program launch in 2003 to halt the spread of weapons of mass destruction, the presidential office said. The move is bound to further infuriate Pyongyang. Associated Press writers Kwang-tae Kim in Seoul, Matthew Lee in Washington, Shino Yuasa in Tokyo, George Jahn in Vienna, Christopher Bodeen and Gillian Wong in Beijing, and Edith M. Lederer at the United Nations, contributed to this report.

National politicians undermining EU parliament, say Liberals
ANDREW WILLIS Today APR 14,09 @ 17:57 CET

Liberals in the European parliament criticised national politicians on Tuesday (14 April), saying they regularly try to hide the important legislative role the EU-level chamber plays.German liberal MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis said EU citizens were for the large part unaware that the vast majority of national legislation originates in Brussels – saying the percentage was 85 per cent in Germany, and even higher in eastern Europe. He said this ignorance was a result of domestic deputies not telling their constituents how much work is performed by their EU-level counterparts. People don't know this because national politicians don't want them to know. They don't want to show up their own minor role, said Mr Chatzimarkakis by way of explaining the low voter turnout in European elections. How much money do you want us to spend in order to get a message across that is always destroyed by our own national politicians in our own parties. The European media also came in for criticism for their apparently poor coverage of European parliamentary affairs with Mr Chatzimarkakis saying: normal editors have clichéd ideas about what the readers want.Party president Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck went further still in her criticism of coverage of the chamber. If the European media paid as little attention to football as they do to the European Parliament, then no one would understand the rules, she said.

Campaign kick-off

The comments were made at a press conference on the eve of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party (EDLR) campaign launch ahead of this June's European elections. The party has based its manifesto – adopted in Stockholm last October - around the four areas of civil liberties, the European single market, the environment and energy policy, and enlargement and foreign security. The ELDR expects to return between 72 and 75 MEPs, winning over 30 million votes and maintaining its number three position in the parliament in its alliance with the European Democratic Party, known collectively as the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).I believe we will continue to hold the balance of power, Ms Neyts-Uyttebroeck told EUObserver, adding that she felt that the centre-right European Peoples' Party would retain the top spot in terms of MEP numbers, despite a move by the British Conservative Party to leave the grouping. The loss of the Conservatives will be a loss in numbers, but it may actually be a relief to many members, she said in reference to the frequently tumultuous relationship between the British party and the pan-European umbrella group. Ms Neyts-Uyttebroeck also predicted that the Socialists, who currently hold the number two slot in the European parliament, would fail to capitalise on the current economic crisis due to outflanking by leftist parties in Europe further to their left, which she expects will do well in the June elections.

The general feelings however amongst Liberal party members is that the party is well placed to capitalise on the current environment due to their traditional support for free markets that are properly regulated. What we want of the state is a prudent role, said Mr Chatzimarkakis, arguing that governments must only get involved with companies when there is a systemic reason for doing so, and only then in accordance with clear guidelines.Such moves could include car sector bail-outs being tied directly to the development of green technology. Additionally, Bulgarian MEP Bilyana Ilieva Raeva said eurozone membership was key to helping central and eastern member states recover from the current downturn. There is a strange wish from the ECB not to start the [last step of the accession] process, she told this website.

EU to sue Britain over Internet privacy By AOIFE WHITE, AP Business Writer - Tue Apr 14, 2009 12:15PM EDT

BRUSSELS - The European Union started legal action against Britain on Tuesday for not applying EU data privacy rules that would restrict an Internet advertising tracker, called Phorm, from watching how users surf the web.The EU regulators also warned that they could force social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace to hide minors' profiles from search engines. The European Commission said Britain should outlaw Internet traffic interception and monitoring unless users give explicit consent that their behavior can be tracked and analyzed. It said it had received numerous complaints about BT Group PLC, which tested Phorm in 2006 and 2007 without informing customers involved in the trial. Phorm analyzes Internet users' behavior so it can target them with advertising that might appeal to them.Such a technology in the view of the European Commission and European data protection law can only be used with the prior consent of the user, said EU spokesman Martin Selmayr.Regulators sent a first legal warning to Britain on Tuesday, asking it to explain or change the way it interprets EU rules, because it currently allows interception when it is unintentional or when a tracker has 'reasonable grounds' to believe that consent was given.Britain has two months to reply. The European Commission can issue more warnings before it can take a government before an EU court, where it may be ordered to change national law or face daily fines.BT sought consent from users when it again tried out Phorm from October to December 2008 in an invitation-only trial. The company says on its Web site that the trial didn't keep or pass on information that could identify users and what they did. It gave no comment on Tuesday on the EU statement.

Internet companies, privacy advocates and regulators disagree on what kind of traffic data is personal — such as IP addresses that give a location — and whether storing information on a crowd of people might evade strict privacy rules because they cannot be identified individually.Phorm plans to work with three Internet operators reaching 70 percent of Britain's broadband market — BT Group PLC, Virgin Media Inc. and Carphone Warehouse Group PLC's TalkTalk. Virgin and TalkTalk said they wanted to try out the technology but would do so only with users' consent.Phorm said in a statement that its technology did not store personal data or browsing history and was fully compliant with UK legislation and relevant EU directives. It said it did not expect that the EU action against Britain would have any impact on its plans. In anticipation of any changes that may be made to the law in future, our system offers unmissable notice and clear and persistent choice to consumers,it said.Britain's Information Commissioner's Office, which is charged with protecting personal information in the country, said it could not comment on the EU move.Separately, EU Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said that social networking sites needed to move fast to step up default privacy settings, especially for younger users — and she would table new EU rules if sites didn't act.Is every social networker really aware that technically, all pictures and information uploaded on social networking profiles can be accessed and used by anyone on the web? she asked in a video message.Do we not cross the border of the acceptable when, for example, the pictures of the Winnenden school shooting victims in Germany are used by commercial publications just to increase sales? She also warned about radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags that can be used as an electronic label on clothing or food to pass on information such as expiry dates or prices to a store cashier or stock checker. No European should carry a chip in one of their possessions without being informed precisely what they are used for, with the choice to remove or switch it off at any time, she said. Stores and other smart tag users complain that some of these requirements to inform customers or switch off the tags could be burdensome, unnecessary and might prevent them from investing in the new technology. EU elections heading for record low turnout
LEIGH PHILLIPS Today APR 14,09 @ 09:25 CET

With European Parliament elections fast approaching, EU citizens are less interested in the poll than ever before in a situation that could see the abstention rate across the bloc hit a record 66 percent.A soon to be released survey from the European Commission's polling service, Eurobarometer, shows that interest in the election is weak right across the union, reports France's Liberation daily. The newest EU citizens, from member states that joined in 2004 and 2007, are as indifferent as their old European cousins, who have decades of experience in EU electoral listlessness.Only 17 percent of Poles intend to vote in the 4 to 7 June elections - the lowest figure of all member states, reports the survey, carried out between January and February this year.Ascending the ladder, some 21 percent of Austrians intend to vote in the polls, followed by 22 percent of Britons, 24 percent of Portuguese and a quarter of Slovaks. Just over a quarter of Czechs, Hungarians and Spaniards say they will make a detour out of their day to head to the polling station, while just under a third of Italians and Bulgarians will do likewise (30% and 31%).Germany, the most populous of the EU states, is likely to see 43 percent of its citizens vote, according to Eurobarometer. France and the Netherlands, home to the rejectionists of the EU's Constitutional Treaty, come close to half the voting public, with both nations on 47 percent. Some 48 percent of Cypriots and Greeks and 49percent of Swedes plan to go to the urns.Only in Malta (56%), Denmark (56%), Luxembourg (62%) and Belgium (70%) will a majority of citizens of voting age cast a ballot in the parliamentary elections. In the latter two countries, voting in elections is mandatory.

The sole silver lining from the survey is that the record abstinence appears to be no indication of growing euroscepticism, but rather a feeling that the vote will not make any difference. Just 20 percent of those surveyed cited rejection of the construction of a European community as their reason for not voting. However, some 64 percent said they were not intending to vote because they had little knowledge of the role of MEPs while 62 percent said it was because voting would not change anything.

Just say No to abstinence

Meanwhile, the European Commission is hoping to convince young people to say No to abstinence. The EU executive has hooked up with MTV to launch an EU-wide campaign similar to the music channel's celebrated Rock the Vote initiative in the US to urge youngsters to take part in the June poll. The European version, a somewhat less boisterous Can You Hear Me, Europe? will see a series of TV spots running regularly on the network's various European stations as well as an interactive website and publicity stunts in EU national capitals.Voter participation is particularly low in the EU, with only 40 percent of young people casting a ballot in the 2004 parliamentary elections and 45.5 percent of people overall.

Scientist: First cloned camel born in Dubai APR 14,09

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A scientist says the world's first cloned camel has been produced in the desert emirate of Dubai.Nisar Ahmad Wani, a senior reproductive biologist at the government's Camel Reproduction Center, says the cloned camel is a six-day-old, one-humped female called Achievement or Injaz in Arabic.Injaz was born April 8 after an uncomplicated gestation of 378 days, the center said in a press release Tuesday. The center said she was created from cells harvested from an ovary of an adult female camel.Camels are a valuable commodity in the desert sheikdoms of the Persian Gulf. They are used for racing and transport. They are famous for healthy low-fat milk and can fetch owners millions of dollars at camel beauty contests.

Brazil breadbasket teeters with economic meltdown By ALAN CLENDENNING, AP Business Writer APR 14,09

FATIMA DO SUL, Brazil – A year ago, Brazil's breadbasket saw what resembled a gold rush as farmers scrambled to increase acreage amid record demand for soy. Today, much of the region is on its knees, victim of a double whammy of a financial crisis and a punishing drought.Standing in his field of withered soy, Antonio Gallego oversees a few farm hands harvesting a crop that grew to just 8 inches (20 centimeters) instead of the normal 6 feet (2 meters). He says he'll lose $40 per acre ($100 per hectare) on this year's investment. This year is just a total loss, and the only thing we can say about the future is that it's uncertain, said Gallego, 43, son of the first settlers to farm this little-developed corner of Brazil a few decades ago.I can't increase acreage because there's no credit. But if I decrease, I can't pay the bills.

Early last year, high oil prices, low food reserves and growing consumer demand in developing nations sent food prices soaring, causing riots from Haiti to Pakistan. As in other agricultural regions, Brazilian farmers and ranchers drove to increase production, raking in huge profits as soy and other commodity prices skyrocketed.

Today, grain and beef prices have plummeted. And with sharply reduced foreign orders for Brazilian iron ore, steel and automobiles, Latin America's largest economy could fall into recession this year.In this sun-baked town with no traffic lights, where tractors and harvesters rumble down the main drag, most farmers say they are losing money on yields from 20 percent to 60 percent below normal. After the financial crisis hit last fall, the area suffered its worst drought in more than 20 years, affecting three of Brazil's five top grain-producing states and large swaths of grain-producing land in Argentina and Paraguay. There was no rain for two months. Some families who have farmed fields for 30 years fear they will lose their land. Tight credit is making it harder for most to buy seeds, fertilizer and machinery. Some of them are going to go broke, said Eduardo Riedel, vice president of the leading agribusiness industry association in Mato Grosso do Sul state, a seemingly endless stretch of fields and pasture bordering Paraguay and Bolivia. The lenders are scared about lending the money, there's loss of income, and the middle rural class isn't investing.

Demand has plunged for Brazilian beef, coffee and soy, which is used worldwide as animal feed and as a key additive in cereal, pasta and other processed foods. The credit crunch also has made it difficult for importing countries to get loans to buy food. The nation's current soy harvest is expected to generate 58 million metric tons, down from 60 million last year. Meanwhile, beef exports for January and February totaled 171 million metric tons, down sharply from 230 million metric tons shipped abroad for the same period in 2008.The price of milk farmers in Fatima do Sul get from dairies since the crisis hit has dropped to 22 cents per quart (liter), below the production cost of 27 cents per quart (liter). And dozens of slaughterhouses hit by the credit crunch in recent months have shut their doors in both Mato Grosso do Sul and the neighboring agricultural powerhouse state of Mato Grosso, throwing thousands of meat cutters out of work.Farmers in the U.S., Canada and Europe are hurting as well from sharply lower prices for soy, corn and beef. But experts say they generally don't hold as much debt as their Brazilian counterparts, giving them greater leeway to ride out the crisis. And many benefit from government subsidies the Brazilians don't get.American farmers are perceiving Brazil to be less of a competitive threat than they used to, said Mike Woolverton, a professor of agricultural economics at Kansas State University. No one expected such a sudden drop from the agribusiness boom that sent Brazilian land prices skyrocketing and drew busloads of American and Argentine investors looking to snap up farmland just before the meltdown last fall.Gone, too, are carloads of Brazilians barreling down highways along soy fields and cow pastures to spend newly earned profits at a duty-free border paradise in Paraguay, where they snapped up computers, cameras, wine and champagne with strong currency that has since slumped against the dollar. The economic crisis even is starting to dent previously sky-high popularity ratings for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Farmers are angry at his claims that the country won't be hit as hard by the meltdown as Europe and the United States. While economists predict Brazil's economy won't expand at all this year or will contract, Silva's administration in March predicted 2 percent growth and just reduced the forecast to 1.2 percent — figures that Fatima do Sul residents call fantasy.

Sales of veterinary supplies for cows fell so much in recent months at Vair Firmino's small main street store, he reduced his stock by more than half and decided to sell cowboy boots, jeans and three different types of chicks, which he displays in sidewalk cages to attract shoppers. Silva says there's no crisis, but just ask a rancher what he's getting for his cows,Firmino said. Rancher and soy farmer Alberto Dalben, who heads Fatima do Sul's association of farmers, said ranchers used to be able to buy three cows to raise after selling one to the slaughterhouse. Now they get less than two. About 90 miles (140 kilometers) west in the city of Ponta Para bordering Paraguay, the crisis prompted Brazilian and foreign investors to cancel plans for a $300 million distillery to turn sugarcane into ethanol, said Ponta Para Mayor Flavio Kayatt. Kayatt and others predict most farmers will survive the downturn that some experts say could last two years, though indebted farmers could be forced out. The rest, they say, will make less money and reduce investments until signs of a global recovery emerge.Dalben says he may reduce his soy acreage and increase the size of his cattle pastures on his 2,270 acres (920 hectares) because raising cows requires less investment and work than soy, though the returns are often lower. We produce food and people will never stop eating,Dalben said, but they'll eat less and that will affect us.Associated Press Writer Carolina Escalera in Sao Paulo contributed to this report.

Recession spurs growth in EU shadow economy
ANDREW RETTMAN Today APR 14,09 @ 09:28 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - While just about every part of Europe's economy is shrinking in the current recession, one sector - the black market - has started to grow, according to fresh research in Austria. The shadow economy - which includes untaxed trade in goods and services, such as cash-in-hand construction work or car repairs, but excludes serious crime such as illegal drugs and prostitution - is predicted to expand by 0.3 to 0.9 percent this year in 14 rich EU states, which are also members of the OECD.The highest growth in the sector - of 0.8 to 0.9 percent - is to come in Ireland, the UK and Spain. Belgium, Austria and Germany meanwhile are at the lower end of the scale.Growth in the former Communist EU states, not covered by the forecast, an analysis by economist Friedrich Schneider of the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, is likely to be the same if not bigger. The turnaround comes after 15 years of decline in black market activity and occurs at a time when the legitimate EU economy is expected to contract by two percent.

The research gathers together motivating factors such as rising taxation, unemployment and mistrust in the state as well as direct indices such as demand for cash from banks and trends in the use of electricity. In Belgium, if you go out on the weekend, you see more construction work being done than during the week, Mr Schneider told EUobserver, explaining that the vast majority of shadow work is carried out by people who also hold licit jobs. The economics of serious crime is different however. Rising taxes are unlikely to have an impact on sales of illegal drugs. Theft and burglary may go up during a recession. At the same time, income from prostitution is likely to go down, as businessmen have less money to spend. The size of the shadow economy varies from region to region. In northern Europe and Scandinavia it represents between 10 and 18 percent of official GDP. In Mediterranean countries such as Portugal and Italy, the sector makes up 20 to 25 percent. Many former Communist EU countries have shadow sectors in the Mediterranean range. But in Estonia, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria the estimate clocks in at 36 to 39 percent. The figures for EU neighbours can be much higher. In Belarus and Moldova, around half of economic activity bypasses the state. In Ukraine, about 57 percent. In Georgia, 68 percent.

The existence of a shadow economy up to the 25 percent mark can improve ordinary people's quality of life, the Austrian academic believes. The shadow economy tends to increase people's well-being. Extra goods are produced, extra income is generated. You don't work in the shadow economy for the sake of your savings account, but because you want to buy a new TV or whatever,Mr Schneider said. A thriving black market can also be useful in other ways. In 2006, the Greek government included the size of its hefty shadow economy in the calculation of its official GDP to try to avoid EU fiscal disciplinary measures. The EU's stability and growth pact limits the size of government borrowing to three percent of GDP. The European Commission rejected the Greek manoeuvre. But the commission itself in recent years has contacted experts such as Mr Schneider to see if shadow economy estimates could be used to inflate the official wealth of member states. The commission has also had this idea because it would enlarge the base from which they calculate contributions to the EU budget. So they are not so hostile, the Austrian economist said. But there is no consensus on how to estimate the size.

Stocks fall as retail sales, price data disappoint APR 14,09
By STEPHEN BERNARD and TIM PARADIS, AP Business Writers.

NEW YORK – Stocks fell Tuesday after an unexpected drop in retail sales and producer prices tested a notion that the economy is starting to find its footing. The poor showing for retail sales in March and a sharp drop in wholesale prices overshadowed better-than-expected profit reports from Johnson & Johnson and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.In midday trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 63.72, or 0.8 percent, to 7,994.09.Broader market measures also lost ground. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 7.26, or 0.9 percent, to 851.47, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 15.74, or 1 percent, to 1,637.57.Financial stocks showed some of the steepest losses even after Goldman's results came in well ahead of what analysts had been expecting. Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are also due to report quarterly results this week.

President Barack Obama and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in separate speeches Tuesday that despite some hopeful signs about the economy a sustained recovery will take time.In a speech at Georgetown University, Obama pointed to signs of progress but said by no means are we out of the woods.Obama's speech and Bernanke's assertion there have been tentative signs of easing in the recession appeared to keep some investors from hitting the sell button. Stocks have surged for five weeks as traders bet that banks are working through some of their biggest troubles and the economy's woes aren't worsening.Wall Street couldn't avoid disappointment over the Commerce Department's report that retail sales fell 1.1 percent in March, the biggest drop in three months. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected an increase of 0.3 percent. In one bright spot, February retail sales were revised to show modest growth rather than the slight dip originally reported. The Labor Department said wholesale prices tumbled 1.2 percent in March as the cost of gasoline, other energy products and food fell sharply. The choppy data that we're seeing, whether it's economic or earnings, reminds us that we're still not out of the woods, said Sean Simko, head of fixed income management at SEI Investments in Philadelphia. The government also said businesses reduced inventories by 1.3 percent in February, close to the 1.2 percent fall that economists had been expecting. Investors are hoping businesses will be able to work through inventory and better align costs with demand.Simko said the mixed data could keep a useful check on the market's advance. The market always has a tendency to go too far too fast,he said.

The drop in stocks followed more signs that companies reporting earnings for the January-March quarter might be able to beat Wall Street's modest expectations.

Johnson & Johnson said its first-quarter profit dipped, but not as much as expected. The health care products maker earned $3.5 billion, or $1.26 per share, above analysts' estimates of $1.22 per share. J&J, one of the 30 stocks that make up the Dow, rose 82 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $51.97.Goldman unexpectedly released its results a day early on Monday, reporting after the closing bell that it earned $1.66 billion in the quarter, well above what analysts were expecting, and would raise $5 billion in stock in hopes of repaying the $10 billion investment it received from the government last year.Goldman fell $7.16, or 5.5 percent, to $122.99 after its share offering. Some other financial stocks also slid. JPMorgan fell $1.09, or 3.2 percent, to $32.61, while Morgan Stanley fell $1.77, or 6.6 percent, to $25.12. In other market moves, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 8.81, or 1.9 percent, to 459.24. About three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 667.9 million shares. Bond prices rose, pushing the yield on the 10-year Treasury note down to 2.80 percent from 2.86 percent late Monday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Light, sweet crude rose 33 cents to $50.38 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 0.9 percent. In afternoon trading, Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.4 percent, Germany's DAX index gained 2 percent, and France's CAC-40 rose 1 percent.

China Slows Purchases of U.S. and Other Bonds
By KEITH BRADSHER Published: April 12, 2009

HONG KONG — Reversing its role as the world’s fastest-growing buyer of United States Treasuries and other foreign bonds, the Chinese government actually sold bonds heavily in January and February before resuming purchases in March, according to data released during the weekend by China’s central bank.Cutting Back China’s foreign reserves grew in the first quarter of this year at the slowest pace in nearly eight years, edging up $7.7 billion, compared with a record increase of $153.9 billion in the same quarter last year.China has lent vast sums to the United States — roughly two-thirds of the central bank’s $1.95 trillion in foreign reserves are believed to be in American securities. But the Chinese government now finances a dwindling percentage of new American mortgages and government borrowing. In the last two months, Premier Wen Jiabao and other Chinese officials have expressed growing nervousness about their country’s huge exposure to America’s financial well-being.Chinese reserves fell a record $32.6 billion in January and $1.4 billion more in February before rising $41.7 billion in March, according to figures released by the People’s Bank over the weekend. A resumption of growth in China’s reserves in March suggests, however, that confidence in that country may be reviving, and capital flight could be slowing. The main effect of slower bond purchases may be a weakening of Beijing’s influence in Washington as the Treasury becomes less reliant on purchases by the Chinese central bank.

Asked about the balance of financial power between China and the United States, one of the Chinese government’s top monetary economists, Yu Yongding, replied that I think it’s mainly in favor of the United States. He cited a saying attributed to John Maynard Keynes: If you owe your bank manager a thousand pounds, you are at his mercy. If you owe him a million pounds, he is at your mercy.Private investors from around the world, including the United States, have been buying more American bonds in search of a refuge from global financial troubles. This has made the Chinese government’s cash less necessary and kept interest rates low in the United States over the winter despite the Chinese pullback. There have also been some signs that Americans may consume less and save more money in response to hard economic times. This would further decrease the American dependence on Chinese savings.Mr. Wen voiced concern on March 13 about China’s dependence on the United States: We have lent a huge amount of money to the U.S. Of course we are concerned about the safety of our assets. To be honest, I am definitely a little worried. The main worry of Chinese officials has been that American efforts to fight the current economic downturn will result in inflation and erode the value of American bonds, Chinese economists said in interviews in Beijing on Thursday and Friday. They are quite nervous about the purchasing power of fixed-income assets, said Yu Qiao, an economics professor at Tsinghua University.Economists said there was no sign that the Chinese government had deliberately throttled back its purchases of overseas bonds to punish the United States for pursuing monetary and fiscal policies aimed at stimulating the American economy. While those policies may run a long-term risk of setting off inflation, they also may benefit China if they rekindle economic growth in the United States and thereby revive China’s faltering exports.

The abrupt slowdown in China’s accumulation of foreign reserves instead seems to suggest that investors were sending large sums of money out of mainland China early this year in response to worries about the country’s economic future and possibly its social stability in the face of rising unemployment.Evidence of such capital flight included a flood of cash into the Hong Kong dollar. Mainland tourists were even buying gold and diamonds during Chinese new year holidays here in late January.

China’s reserves have soared in recent years as the People’s Bank bought dollars on a huge scale to prevent China’s currency from appreciating as money poured into the country from trade surpluses and heavy foreign investment. But China’s trade surpluses have narrowed slightly as exports have fallen, while foreign investment has slowed as multinationals have conserved their cash.Jun Ma, a Deutsche Bank economist in Hong Kong, predicted that China’s foreign reserves would rise only $100 billion this year after climbing $417.8 billion last year. Some economists contend that slower growth in Chinese foreign currency reserves is not important to the economic health of the United States, even though it may be politically important. In the first quarter, instead of the Chinese government sending money out of the country to buy foreign bonds, Chinese individuals and companies were buying many of the same bonds.

The outflow would mostly end up in the U.S. anyway, even if China is no longer controlling the destination of the money, said Michael Pettis, a finance professor at Peking University, in an interview on Thursday.Heavy purchases of Hong Kong dollars by mainland Chinese residents early this year also have the indirect effect of helping the United States borrow money. The Hong Kong government pegs its currency to the American dollar, and stepped up its purchases of Treasury bonds this winter in response to strong demand for Hong Kong dollars. But China’s economy appears to be bouncing back from the global economic downturn faster than its trade partners’ economies. If that proves true, the result could be an increase in imports to China while its exports recover less briskly. This would limit trade surpluses and leave the People’s Bank with less money to plow into foreign reserves.

The New World Order Is Taking Over the Patriot and Truth Movements
Jeffrey Grupp Infowars April 13, 2009

We all know that there are infiltrators into the various patriot movements. Old news. But that is not what I discuss in this article. I may be wrong, but I think something far more serious is going on: I think that the biggest, strongest patriot movements (Alex Jones and the Truth Movement, Campaign for Liberty, etc.) are about to completely damaged or hijacked so that they no longer exist, and are completely destroyed. This is the New World Order tactic, so none of us should be surprised, just like I was not surprised when the Ron Paul Presidential run was run off the road and taken over almost effortlessly, it seems, before the first votes in New Hampshire were cast. So let’s get into this issue…If Ann Coulter is so awake now, endorsing Ron Paul and stating that he was right about everything, why won’t she then talk about the things that Ron Paul discusses: the Fed, Codex Alimentarius, the North American Union, the WTO and IMF, what the Second Amendment really is all about, and so on? There is something funny going on here… and I think I know what. If Glen Beck is such a patriot and such a rebel of the mass media now, also promoting Ron Paul, why can’t his research team, after searching for over a week as Beck said, simply find any of the dozens of news articles in Newsweek, the New York Times, the Houston Chronicle, and so on, about the massive FEMA camps all over? Answer: he’s lying. Why is the mass media moving into our territory now, discussing some of the same issues we Truthers and patriots discuss, all of a sudden? If this keeps up, even as Alex Jones hinted at last week, his radio show could become passé. In other words, the movement will be hijacked from Jones, Ron Paul, and other leaders in the genuine patriot movements by the mass media (and the New World Order that controls the mass media), and the mass media will have control of them, just as they almost effortlessly took over the Ron Paul Presidential run’s momentum in the days before the New Hampshire Primary. Let me explain what I think is really going on.

Consider these facts:

1. All of a sudden, starting around late last fall, right when the stock market crash was going on, with a vengeance, the mass corporatist media began telling us that there is a New World Order and a coming world government. And since then, the mass media tells us either that this New World Order and coming world government is great, or they would tell us that it’s bad and it’s only about the bankers—they don’t tell us, for example, that it’s project of the occultist and militaristic corporatists behind the scenes, or that it traces back to Hitler—I didn’t hear Beck cover that story!

2. That same mass media is telling us that the old system is the cause of the economic collapse, and oh no [wink wink], the people might revolt against it (against system and/or the bankers). That old system referred to in 2 is, we are told by the thought-controlling mass media, not the country the Founders set up for us, but rather:

3. our current system of government (which is far from the libertarian Founders’ government, and which is now actually a corporatist system where the government is a ceremonial government, like the Roman Congress was in ancient Rome),

4. the banks (but not the globalist banks, IMF, etc.),

5. capitalism (sure we never really have had it in the past 150 years—instead we’ve only had corporatism—but what traces of capitalism we’ve had are now being castigated [GM’s failed business model, etc.] or called nonexistent by the mass media, needing to be replaced by socialistic systems, such as with the NewsWeek cover story: We Are All Socialists Now)

And there are other odd things going on, such as

6. Ann Coulter, who has been unwavering and incredibly rabid and virulent in her pro-war hate for Middle Eastern people, all of a sudden is supporting the most anti-war presidential candidate in decades, saying he was right all along—um… did I hear that right? There are other examples, but these are all stunning, and they are quite new in the mass media. Is any of this making any sense? Because it’s really confusing me—Anne Coulter has never used reason, but now suddenly she wants to? I think it’s all sounding more like the old wolf in sheep’s clothing” than anything else. To understanding the conclusions I am going to bring out in this article, you will have to interconnect all these points, 1-6, at once. Let’s continue…We are being told in the mass media in various ways that these systems (1-3) have failed us, that’s really the problem, and those systems need to be changed (eradicated) in one way or another. But all this (and so much more) has been going on all along for centuries—the banks robbing us, etc.—so why now does the mass media all-at-once decide to announce a few of these tid-bits to us that they’ve covered up for decades? If the mass media suddenly wants to tell us how the banks have ripped us all off, well why didn’t they tell us that in 1913, the 1980s, or maybe even just in 2007? And why not tell us that Obama supported it all? But more importantly, why all-at-once, right at this particular point in time, are we getting these few tid-bits from the mass media? Answer: look what it is doing to the patriot movements; it’s becoming them. Now, also consider that the mass media is telling us a few more things simultaneously, in addition to 1-6:

7. world government is the solution to the failed systems and to the economic collapse, and

8. The conspiracy people were right about a all along.

Now, notice, again, that 1-8 are all happening at once! Coincidence? Hard to believe. The robots and extremists of the mass media (Beck, Hannity, Savage, Limbaugh, Coulter, O’Reilly, and others.) have been such robotic and unfathomable traitors through the years that they can only be carrying out an agenda now too, not trying to report news, attract an audience, or keep their ratings high. Why else would they bring all this up at the very same time? Perhaps Alex Jones is correct, and these propagandists are suddenly just worried about their ratings and their competition from the alternative media. This may be true, but as I said, my theory is that there’s something more serious going on. Here’s the issue: the New World Order wants worldwide rioting, mass death, economic collapse, sacrifice of lower minions and freemasons of the New World Order, compliance with the climate change laws and servitude, and a set up of a Brave New World, all over the course of the next decade or decades. What better way is there to do this than to shock and clean-the-slate of the populace of the world (often called shock doctrine, as a recent book discussed) to get them ready for big changes and compliance with a new world, right when the populace is getting desperate and un-thought-out due to their desperation and increasing poverty, than by introducing them with information about how evil the world leaders are and world system is (but all along keeping the real completely unseen master corporatists out of the picture)? Answer: you merely implement 1-8, where a key element in that and to cause revolt is to hijack the real patriot movements with the vacuous, uninformed, undirected, and undisciplined false patriotism of Beck, Coulter, and the rest, by simply taking over their discussions, as seems to be starting right now with Coulter, Beck, and others. There! That’s the issue, and it could easily result in a quick total hijacking of the power the patriot movements have accumulated.

Proof that the New World Order wants to use the Truth Movement and similar movements for the aforementioned aims was possibly even seen last weekend when some news agencies said that the Pittsburgh police shooting was due to the shooter listening to the words of Glen Beck and Alex Jones (notice how those two were coupled together), not because of, for example, the violent tendencies of the shooter (he was accused of assaulting a girlfriend in the past), his economic hardships, or some other cause. As if Alex Jones has ever promoted violence against police, rather than mild civil disobedience, and/or taking over the government by the people (the latter being the often-mentioned trademarked Alex Jones solution to the New World Order takeover of the country). (Also note that if this is true, there also may be an additional divide-and-conquer maneuver already being set up as 1-8 are implemented: set the revolting parts of the populace against the non-revolting parts.) If Ann Coulter is so awake and patriotic now, why doesn’t she point out that alcohol and Big Pharma kills hundreds of thousands each year, many times what violence does, or violence with guns, and not listening to Alex Jones or Glen Beck? Answer: because she’s carrying out the typical Big Media agenda that she’s ordered to. Nothing new. Now, also remember before 9/11, when Alex Jones predicted it a few weeks before? He was able to do that because the mass media—the mouthpiece and brainwashing device of the New World Order—was telling us it was going to happen. Doesn’t it seem like the mass media is again telling us something here, also, when you interconnect points 1-8? They are telling us that 1-8 will happen, that the old world and our current way of life will be destroyed, that We the People will destroy it with our riots, with our contributing to the economic problems, and through our adherence to the old system of government (described above), so that the new communism will inevitably set in—it’s all the fault of We the People. Now where have we heard this sort of a story before! (Hint: after World War II, we were told that the war was caused by the mass madness of the world citizenry, not by the New World Order, and thus Truman had to set up all those mental health acts that he did in order that We the People could be cured of our irrationalism.)So, the mass media, again, is merely telling us what is going to happen, that it’s all our fault. So, let me summarize: it is clear to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that the corporatist New World Order is now using what most of us think of as the most hard-core of the patriot movements in order to carry out their agenda. LET ME SAY THAT IN DIFFERENT WORDS SO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM GETTING ACROSS TO YOU: The real patriot movements are getting so large, so powerful, so pervasive, that the New World Order has no choice but to fully hijack these movements if they are to carry out their planned Brave New World agendas. More specifically: the New World Order is going to make our Truth and Patriot movements their primary tools of operation to carry out Eugenics and so forth.

That’s my theory, and my prediction.

How, you might ask, will it all work? Well, if you want to get a revolt going, why not disclose false flag terror (such as Michael Savage started to do recently for the first time on his radio show where he foretold Obama’s upcoming Reichstag)? That sure would do it if the mass media went that far and all-at-once got this the real-ness of false flag terror into the minds of the sappy and unfocussed citizenry, shocking them to the core by totally upsetting their established belief system, all right when that citizenry was destitute, in a depression, filled with bird flu epidemic fears, with millions living tent cities, hungry and cold, and so on, as is most likely going to be the case this fall or winter. Was Savage’s recent comment a prelude to this? It is quite obvious the New World Order is pushing for violence, as Alex Jones has been pointing out. The New World Order, through our city, state and Federal governments, is pushing the populace so hard now, more and more each day, with impossible taxation (who can pay all the taxes as we fall into massive depression?), with crazy new laws (banning home-schooling, etc.), police taserings, making home gardens illegal (just like the King in the book Robin Hood banned hunting deer), announcing that the bankers are robbing us, announcing that the government is not helping the economic crisis but is fuelling it (of course they don’t disclose all the details with this), and most importantly, getting ready to remove the Second Amendment and all of the Constitution. They are creating a system where we are not Americans, but where we are all living like the slaves on the plantations in the 1800s, where only revolt (violence) could follow, because it is being pre-planned, and our movements are going to be used to fuel the violent revolts, unless we wake up to this possibility and start discussing these issues with urgency. Don’t forget how quickly the Ron Paul Presidential run was hijacked!

So what does the New World Order want with all the rioting? Well, there are several things. Firstly, this is part of the New World Order’s religious festival: spread as much mayhem, panic, misery and pure blood chaos as possible—this is a work of art to the New World Order; it is like listening to Beethoven to them. Some of you may find this difficult to understand, but they attain their religious experience by this theater, as they often call it (remember Iraq was called a theater around the time of Shock and Awe? Notice the word Awe there, also). If you still have trouble believing this, then ask yourself a question: What is the New World Order waiting for in killing billions? They’ve had super technology to kill as many of us as they want to for decades. They are building up our numbers in order to slaughter us, because the slaughter itself is their art, their high, just like the ancient hallucinatory ballgame (the pitzlawal, as it’s called by the Maya) of death-entertainment was for the Mayan shaman kings, a little like the ancient Roman gladiator fights, and a lot like the carnage in Iraq. What is beautiful to the New World Order is a world of deformed, sickened, ultra-violent, unintelligent desperate people, like the Island of Dr. Moreau. That’s the religious festival of the New World Order, and the aforementioned rioting is a key issue involved. If we want to be free, to be kings of ourselves, we have to realize this, to know the enemy as best we can, or else we will just go along the pitzlawal we are all currently caught in. The way to be kings of ourselves is to become intelligent, knowledgeable, deeply and genuinely religious, and self-sufficient in the way the Indians used to be—that’s the sort of civil disobedience we need, and which Henry David Thoreau lived when he wrote his influenial book on civil disobedience. Ok, so a New World Order religious festival is the first point of the rioting. Another is that the rioting is the way to transform the nation into a shock state, and thus bring about an entry of the Brave New World. The old world has to be destroyed in order to set up the new world, and that means that our minds, our memories, our ways of life, and our peaceful day-to-day lifestyles of American comfort, the security for our families, and so on, all have to be destroyed, sending us into a mass state of shock (shock doctrine). I think a lot of people in our movement are oblivious to this intention, this plan, this hijacking of our movement. But isn’t that what they always do? So, what should we do? Do we panic and start fighting with all the other patriots and Truthers for every little thing we disagree over? I disagree with other Truthers about many ideas, so should I fight with them about that constantly? Or should I fight the enemy? We of course must focus on the fight. But what is the fight? The fight is the fight for truth. But what is the truth? The truth is what we can experience and see with our eyes, right in front of our face. And what we see is the destruction of the Constitution and of the nation we live in.

Report: Iran to launch new satellite into orbit APR 14,09

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran's official news agency reports President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the country plans to launch another satellite. The Tuesday report by IRNA quotes Ahmadinejad as saying despite concerns in the West over the launch of Iran's first domestically made satellite in February, Iran plans to launch another satellite into space. This one will go higher than the previous satellite. There were no details about when the launch would happen. The first domestically made Iranian satellite ended its mission in late March after some 40 days in orbit.Iran's ambitious space program has worried the U.S. and other world powers since the same rocket technology used to launch satellites can also deliver warheads. Iran rejects the concerns.
