At least 34 killed in Spain subway mishap

VALENCIA, Spain - A subway train accelerated, shuddered and flipped off the tracks Monday in the Mediterranean port of Valencia, killing at least 34 passengers and injuring 47 in one of Spain‘s worst rail accidents, officials and witnesses said. Rescue workers hustled bloodied, sooty survivors from the tunnel. Anguished relatives cried out in grief and drew each other close as they waited outside the local morgue. The accident brought back memories of the 2004 terrorist attack on Madrid commuter trains that killed 191 people.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero cut short a visit to India. Pope Benedict XVI , who was to arrive in Valencia on Saturday for the Roman Catholic Church‘s World Meeting of the Families, prayed for the victims and has followed with pain ... the dramatic reports, the Vatican said. Jorge Alvarez, secretary-general of the Independent Railway Union, said it was too early to blame human error for Monday‘s tragedy.

He said his union repeatedly warned of safety problems on Valencia‘s 18-year-old subway system, particularly the No. 1 line. Vicente Rambla of the regional Interior Ministry said that Monday was one of the saddest days for Valencia, a city of 800,000 on the country‘s east coast, some 220 miles from Madrid. Some of the dead were still inside the carriage hours later, Rambla said. A woman who emerged unhurt from the subway told reporters she had been waiting for a train to arrive when she heard a very loud noise and saw sparks fly deep inside the tunnel, state news agency Efe reported. About 150 people were evacuated from the station, authorities said. Nunez said he was able to break open a door to leave the train.

Police cordoned off the area and a mobile medical unit was set up at the scene. Zapatero was to attend a Tuesday morning mass in Valencia. More than 60 million people used Valencia‘s subway system in 2005, some 165,000 people a day, according to its Web site. The subway has four lines and 116 stations. In June 2003, 19 people were killed and 48 injured in a head-on crash in central Spain. The crash, in which a passenger train collided with a freight train, occurred outside the station in Chinchilla. On March 11, 2004, Islamic radicals bombed several commuter trains around Madrid, killing 191 people and injuring more than 1,500.

Forest fires heat up around the province
Jul, 03 2006 - 5:30 AM

VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - Hot and dry conditions around the province are causing some concern for BC's fire service. And with conditions not expected to change in the near future, we can expect more forest fires. So far, there have been 650 forest fires in BC this season, 30 of which are from Saturday alone. Radha Fisher with the BC Fire Service says this season has been busier than the last. We've had a beautiful weekend, and that has increased the activity that we've seen. We're expecting to see another, at least a week of dry, warm conditions which will compound that even further.Fisher says dry conditions were a contributing factor in the Tumbler Ridge fire, which is anywhere from one to four thousand hectares in size. That fire was caused by a lightning strike.

Rash of small earthquakes reported
Associated Press

There's been a rash of small earthquakes in the Andreanof Islands Sunday. But the Alaska Earthquake Information Center says there have been NO reports of damage from any of them.

The latest was a magnitude 5.0 earthquake recorded about 10:30 Sunday morning. It was centered about 73 miles southeast of Amchitka. Two others -- with magnitudes 5.2 and 5.3 -- were both centered 81 miles southeast of Amchitka. They rumbled within about 20 minutes of each other around ten o'clock this morning.

WTO in 'crisis' after talks fail, Lamy says
03.07.2006 - 09:58 CET | By Helena Spongenberg

With another failed world trade meeting pushing the WTO into a crisis, the head of the organisation, Pascal Lamy, is set to step up negotiating efforts.More than 60 ministers of the 149 WTO members took part in the so-called Doha development round meeting in Geneva over the weekend (30 June-2 July), where they tried to reach an agreement on tariff reductions on the imports of agricultural and industrial goods.I will not beat about the bush, Mr Lamy said after the meeting in a statement. We are now in a crisis. He stated that the 149 WTO members now seemed to be faced with the real propsect of a Doha development round not taking place.

This is serious, not only for the agriculture and industrial tariffs, but also obviously for the round as a whole if we want to conclude it by the end of this year,he said.Mr Lamy also explained that in the next few weeks he would bilaterally establish intensive diplomatic contacts in search of an agreement. The gaps are not unbridgeable and there is no panic, the Frenchman said.EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson, who deals with WTO negotiations on behalf of the European Union agreed on the problematic outlook. If we don't turn things around in the next two weeks, we will not make a breakthrough this summer and then we will be facing defeat, he said according to the BBC.

The almost five year old Doha round of WTO talks, which started in the capital of Qatar in 2001, has already missed several deadlines and was meant to end in 2004.A ministerial meeting in December last year failed to reach an agreement but set a
deadline for a deal in April which was then postponed to this weekend in Geneva.US trade representative Susan Schwab said the impasse does not mean that the Doha is dead.

The Indian minister of industry, Kamal Nath, who is one of most outspoken critics of the richer countries and who returned to India without waiting for the final outcome of the meeting said, according to La Vanguardia, that there was no necessity to hide that the meeting of Geneva has been a failure.

Australian prime minister John Howard today blamed the EU for the near collapse of the trade talks, saying it was European intransigence on agricultural protection that was putting the negotiations at risk. The Doha round aims to boost the global economy and help pull millions of people across the world out of poverty by liberalising trade in agriculture, industry and services. To save the deal, according to Mr Lamy, the US must reduce the subsidies Washington pays to its farmers, while the EU must lower the duties on agriculture imports and the G-20 group of developing countries, led by Brazil and India, must open up access to its industrial markets.

PSALMS 122:2-7
2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:
4 Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
5 For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
7 Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

PSALMS 137:4-6
4 How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?
5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Global prayers for Gilad
Jews, and Christians in more than 50 nations petition the Almighty
By Stan Goodenough,July 03, 2006

Ignoring fundamental differences that have kept them apart for 2000 years, Jews and Christians in more than 50 different nations have been joining in prayer to the God of Israel for the safekeeping and speedy release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.Since his abduction by Palestinian Arabs on June 25, congregations in synagogues and churches and students in colleges and seminaries at all four points of the compass have held special prayers on behalf of the 19-year-old and his family.

And in what is surely a sign of the extra-ordinary days in which we live, The Jerusalem Post – a secular Israeli daily – has been printing the prayers of hundreds of these People of the Book.

This ongoing phenomenon of worldwide intercession ignited spontaneously among people of many tribes and nations and tongues who worship the one true God, and whose hearts have been wrenched at the photographs of the slight, sweetly-smiling and bespectacled young man standing in uniform next to an Israeli tank.

Whether been made to “HaShem,” “Adonai,” “Jesus,” or “Yeshua,” more than 1000 prayers have been posted on the Post website by concerned individuals in Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Curacao, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, England, Finland, France, Gabon, Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Scotland, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, the Ukraine, Uruguay, USA, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands.

Petitioners, many of them parents who said they could hardly imagine what Shalit’s family must be going through, expressed their hopes for a safe reunification, for courage for both the captured soldier and his family, for wisdom and strength for the Israeli government, and for the exacting of just and swift retribution on the abductors. On Monday morning, the terrorists holding Shalit issued an ultimatum, saying that unless Israel met their demand for the release of hundreds of Arab prisoners by 6:00 am Tuesday, the Jewish state would have to pay the full future consequences.Prayers for Shalit's freedom are expected to intensify in the coming
hours.

PRAYER FOR GILAD AND ALL ISRAELIS.

I Pray Father, The GOD of Israel that you protect and save your Israeli Soldier Gilad Shalit. And I pray your protection for all the Israelis in Israel and the World from hatred and death. I also pray for the rebuilding of the 3RD TEMPLE and for the PEACE OF JERUSALEM. And I pray this Father in KING JESUS Name AMEN and AMEM. Come quickly Lord Jesus.
