Construction of two new nuclear plants in the southern Iranian city of Bushehr, home to the country’s only current working nuclear power station, is on schedule and going to plan, the Islamic Republic’s atomic head said on Monday.Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said on Monday that the latest additions to its nuclear portfolio were “moving ahead in an excellent manner,” according to Iranian media reports.“I was in Bushehr two or three days ago and the Bushehr 2 and Bushehr 3 power plants are being constructed,” Salehi reportedly said at a cabinet meeting in Tehran.The project, which will cost more than $8.5 billion and is being built with Russian assistance, is expected to go online by 2026.Iran’s sole operational nuclear reactor, also built with Russian assistance, currently produces 1,000 megawatts of electricity. The new plants will produce an additional 1,057 megawatts.Western nations do not view the Bushehr plant as a proliferation risk because Russia supplies the fuel for the reactor and takes away spent fuel that could otherwise be used to make weapons-grade plutonium.Earlier this year, Salehi said that Iran had deceived nuclear inspectors by quietly purchasing replacement parts for its Arak nuclear reactor while it was conducting negotiations for an international agreement under which it knew it would be required to destroy the original components.Salehi recalled that during talks for the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 deal that lifted sanctions on Iran in return for it dismantling the weapons-capable parts of its nuclear program, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned his country’s negotiators that he expected Western parties to renege on the agreement.“When our team was in the midst of the negotiations, we knew that [the Westerners] would ultimately renege on their promises,” Salehi said. “The leader [Khamenei] warned us that they were violators of agreements. In the meantime Washington has imposed heavy sanctions on Iran that could weaken the ability of the remaining parties to maintain the deal.Last month Salehi said Iran has begun “preliminary activities for designing” a modern process for 20-percent uranium enrichment. In their speeches, they highlighted Ettinger’s last decision to confront his attacker after being shot rather than fleeing the scene.“Your father was a hero in life and a hero in death,” said Bennett in a message directed at Ettinger’s children, who range in age from 1 to 21. “In death, he didn’t do what most people would have done in that situation. Construction of two new nuclear plants in the southern Iranian city of Bushehr, home to the country’s only current working nuclear power station, is on schedule and going to plan, the Islamic Republic’s atomic head said on Monday.Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said on Monday that the latest additions to its nuclear portfolio were “moving ahead in an excellent manner,” according to Iranian media reports.“I was in Bushehr two or three days ago and the Bushehr 2 and Bushehr 3 power plants are being constructed,” Salehi reportedly said at a cabinet meeting in Tehran.The project, which will cost more than $8.5 billion and is being built with Russian assistance, is expected to go online by 2026.Iran’s sole operational nuclear reactor, also built with Russian assistance, currently produces 1,000 megawatts of electricity. The new plants will produce an additional 1,057 megawatts.Western nations do not view the Bushehr plant as a proliferation risk because Russia supplies the fuel for the reactor and takes away spent fuel that could otherwise be used to make weapons-grade plutonium.Earlier this year, Salehi said that Iran had deceived nuclear inspectors by quietly purchasing replacement parts for its Arak nuclear reactor while it was conducting negotiations for an international agreement under which it knew it would be required to destroy the original components.Salehi recalled that during talks for the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 deal that lifted sanctions on Iran in return for it dismantling the weapons-capable parts of its nuclear program, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned his country’s negotiators that he expected Western parties to renege on the agreement.“When our team was in the midst of the negotiations, we knew that [the Westerners] would ultimately renege on their promises,” Salehi said. “The leader [Khamenei] warned us that they were violators of agreements. We had to act wisely. Not only did we avoid destroying the bridges that we had built, but we also built new bridges that would enable us to go back faster if needed.”US President Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal in May last year but the other signatories, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran have all agreed to try to keep the pact alive on their own. Trump insists the original agreement did not go far enough in curbing Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions and wants to renegotiate the JCPOA with stricter terms. In the meantime Washington has imposed heavy sanctions on Iran that could weaken the ability of the remaining parties to maintain the deal.Last month Salehi said Iran has begun “preliminary activities for designing” a modern process for 20-percent uranium enrichment. ELI, West Bank — Over 1,000 Israelis gathered solemnly in the central West Bank settlement of Eli Monday for the funeral of Achiad Ettinger, hours after he succumbed to wounds he sustained a day earlier in a terror attack at the nearby Ariel Junction.Eulogies were delivered by, among others, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, the rabbi of the Eli settlement, and several of the 47-year-old’s 12 children. In their speeches, they highlighted Ettinger’s last decision to confront his attacker after being shot rather than fleeing the scene.“Your father was a hero in life and a hero in death,” said Bennett in a message directed at Ettinger’s children, who range in age from 1 to 21. “In death, he didn’t do what most people would have done in that situation. He didn’t run away, but strove to confront the terrorist.”“In your heroism you became an emissary for the entire nation of Israel. Everyone will learn from your actions, both civilians and soldiers,” said Avraham Schiller, the rabbi of the Eli settlement, where the victim resided.Relatives told reporters Sunday that Ettinger turned his car around after being shot and managed to fire four bullets in the direction of the Palestinian terrorist, causing him to flee the scene rather than target others. Palestinians in the Gaza Strip resumed night time protests along the border between Israel and the coastal enclave on Monday, a week after halting them.Pictures and videos posted on Twitter show Palestinians in several locations in the border area, setting off small explosions, lighting tires on fire, and pointing lasers at Israeli security forces.The loud sounds created by the explosions at previous night time protests have caused significant distress for some Israelis living adjacent to Gaza.Some 600 Palestinians participating in the night time protests on Monday largely remained several hundreds of meters away from the border fence, an IDF spokesman said.At past evening protests, many Palestinians, mainly youth, have approached the fence and clashed with security forces. On Thursday, police sealed off the entire Temple Mount after a firebomb was thrown at an officer, who was lightly hurt in the attack.On Sunday, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court said the Gate of Mercy building should be closed while legal proceedings continue.The site’s administrator, the Waqf religious organization, was given 60 days to respond.The Jordanian Foreign Ministry rapped the decision, arguing that the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court did not even have the authority to rule on matters pertaining to the Temple Mount because it is “occupied territory.”It called on Israel to cancel the court’s decision and not harm the status quo at the flashpoint site.High-level Israeli and Jordanian officials have been holding talks in the hope of defusing the situation. JAYAPURA, Indonesia (AP) — The death toll from flash floods and mudslides triggered by torrential downpours in Indonesia's easternmost province has risen to 89, with dozens of others missing, officials said Tuesday.Floodwaters and landslides destroyed roads and bridges in several areas of Papua province's Jayapura district early Sunday, hampering rescue efforts.National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the worst-hit area from the flooding was Sentani subdistrict, where tons of mud, rocks and trees from a landslide on a mountain rolled down to a river that burst its banks, sweeping away residents.He said 89 bodies had been pulled from the mud and wreckage of crumpled homes by Tuesday. Another 159 people were injured, including 84 who were hospitalized, many with broken bones and head wounds.The number of dead is expected to rise as rescue workers comb through affected areas.More than 1,600 rescuers, including soldiers and police, faced difficulties on Tuesday in clearing huge piles of debris due to shortages of heavy equipment, said Papua military spokesman Col. Muhammad Aidi."We face difficulties removing debris and the bodies under rubble as we don't have enough excavators," Aidi said, adding that rescuers were searching for 74 people reportedly missing and feared dead.Nugroho said about 7,000 residents were displaced from their homes, with more than 400 houses and other buildings damaged and thousands of others submerged.Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and floods that kill dozens each year in Indonesia, a chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.

Beira (Mozambique) (AFP) - More than a thousand people are feared to have died in a cyclone that smashed into Mozambique last week, while scores were killed and more than 200 are missing in neighbouring Zimbabwe.The city of Beira in central Mozambique bore Cyclone Idai's full wrath on Thursday before the storm barrelled on to neighbouring Zimbabwe, unleashing fierce winds and flash floods and washing away roads and houses."For the moment we have registered 84 deaths officially, but when we flew over the area... this morning to understand what's going on, everything indicates that we could register more than 1,000 deaths," Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said in a nationwide address."This is a real humanitarian disaster," he said.
