LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has joined the inquiry into circumstances surrounding the recent deaths of 22 horses at Santa Anita Park, one of America's premiere thoroughbred racetracks, the agency said on Friday.Word that local law enforcement was involved in seeking the underlying causes for the spate of deaths came a day after Santa Anita announced an unprecedented ban on the use of drugs and whips in competition there.Santa Anita suspended racing indefinitely in early March to launch its own investigation into whether track conditions led to a unusually high number of breakdowns.At that time, a total of 21 horses had been euthanized for injuries suffered in competition or training since Christmas, more than double the number of such fatalities during the entire previous season.On Thursday, a 22nd death occurred when a 3-year-old filly named Princess Lili B broke both front legs at the end of a half-mile (800-meter) workout. Palestinian worshipers on Friday ripped the doors off a building on the Temple Mount complex at the heart of recent tensions between Israeli security forces and the Islamic Waqf, which acts as the custodian of the volatile holy site on behalf of Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.The Palestinian protesters removed the doors of the Gate of Mercy, or Bab al-Rahma, after Friday prayers, despite instructions from the Waqf, the Temple Mount custodian and the head sheikh, all of whom had urged calm.A group of protesters also raised the Palestinian flag on the roof of the building, and it was then removed by police, according to the Haaretz daily.The Gate of Mercy was sealed by Israeli authorities in 2003 because the group managing the area had ties to Hamas, and it has been kept closed to stop illegal construction work there by the Waqf.Israeli officials believe the work carried out by the Waqf, which refused to allow any Israeli observers, has led to the destruction of antiquities from periods of Jewish presence in the area.The Waqf has repeatedly challenged the closure, convening and staging prayer-protests in the area that often erupted into clashes with police.Last month, the Waqf reopened the site and Palestinian worshipers have begun to use it as a mosque, despite Israeli attempts to keep the area sealed.Since then, several low-level clashes have broken out between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli security forces. On Thursday, police sealed off the entire Temple Mount after a firebomb was thrown at an officer.High-level Israeli and Jordanian officials have been holding talks in the hope of defusing the situation. Last week, Israeli officials traveled to Jordan for meetings, and Jordanian officials have also visited Jerusalem, according to Israeli reports.The talks were ongoing and the sides have yet to come to an agreement, the Haaretz daily reported this week.Jordan has suggested that the site be closed for long-term renovations. A man in his 20s was shot dead in the coastal city of Jaffa on Friday night in what police believe was a gang-related killing.Ghanmen Hinawi, a 26-year-old resident of Lod, was rushed to Holon’s Wolfson Hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, but was declared dead shortly after he arrived.Eyewitnesses said the gunman fired around 10 bullets at Hinawi from close range before fleeing the scene.Police have opened an investigation into the shooting on the city’s Dror Street, but investigators have indicated it was gang-related. Police said security forces were searching the area for the assailant.According to reports, Hinawi was known to police for his criminal activity and was embroiled in a dispute with a well known crime family in Jaffa.Drive-by shootings and car bombs set off as part of underworld gang wars have long wracked Israeli cities, with law enforcement authorities struggling to stem the phenomenon.Hinawi’s death Friday was the third gang-related killing in Jaffa since December.
