20 dead, 60 burned in fire at tap on Mexico fuel pipeline-Blaze caused after thieves illegally tapped the pipeline; dozens of locals were collecting fuel in buckets when explosion occurred-By Mark Stevenson-TOI-JAN 21,19

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A huge fire exploded at a pipeline leaking fuel in central Mexico on Friday, killing at least 20 people and badly burning 60 others as locals collected the spilling gasoline in buckets, officials said. The leak was caused by fuel thieves illegally tapping the pipeline in a small town in the state of Hidalgo, about 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of Mexico City, according to state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex.Video footage showed dozens of residents near the town of Tlahuelilpan gathered to collect spilled fuel in buckets, garbage cans and other vessels. Fuel was seen spouting dozens of feet into the air from the tap. Footage then showed flames shooting high into the air against a night sky and the pipeline ablaze.Hidalgo Gov. Omar Fayad said 20 people were killed immediately and 60 suffered burns in the blast at the duct that carries fuel —apparently gasoline — from the Gulf coast to the Mexico City area.“Caring for the wounded is our top priority,” Fayad said.Pemex attributed the blaze to “the manipulation of an illegal tap.”President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has declared an offensive against fuel theft, and on Friday he called on all branches of government to assist the victims.#BREAKING-Pipeline explosion in #Mexico : According to the #Hidalgo governor, at least 20 people dead and 50 wounded so far in the incidentpic.twitter.com/wzhdgy7nyt— EHA News (@eha_news) January 19, 2019-Hidalgo state police said the leak was first reported at about 5:00 p.m. local time.“There was a report that residents were on the scene trying to obtain fuel,” according to a police report. Two hours later, the pipeline burst into flames. It is not the first time such an accident has occurred. In December 2010, authorities blamed oil thieves for a pipeline explosion in a central Mexico near the capital that killed 28 people, including 13 children. That blast burned people and scorched homes, affecting 5,000 residents in an area six miles (10 kilometers) wide in San Martin Texmelucan.Lopez Obrador launched an offensive against the $3 billion per-year fuel theft industry after taking office December 1. Thieves drilled about 12,581 illegal taps in the first 10 months of 2018 and the country has deployed 3,200 marines to guard pipelines and refineries. The new administration has also shut down pipelines to detect and deter illegal taps, relying more on delivering fuel by tanker truck. But there aren’t enough trucks, and long lines at gas stations have plagued several states.

ADL asks Rashida Tlaib to explain photo with man who praised Hamas and Hezbollah-Racism watchdog slams Palestinian-American Congresswoman for posing with Abbas Hamideh, who also equated Zionists with Nazis-By Ron Kampeas-TOI-JAN 21,19

Three of four US soldiers killed in Syrian bombing identified-Fourth victim, a civilian contractor, not named; suicide attack in wake of Trump’s troop pullout announcement is deadliest to hit US soldiers in Syria since 2014 deployment-By TOI staff and Agencies-JAN 21 January 2019

Three US soldiers killed in a suicide attack in the northern Syrian town of Manbij earlier this week were identified by the Department of Defense Friday. The three soldiers killed were named as Army Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Farmer, 37, of Boynton Beach, Florida; Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician Shannon Kent, 35, from upstate New York; and Scott Wirtz, a civilian Department of Defense employee from St. Louis.A fourth person, a civilian contractor, was not named.Wednesday’s suicide bombing, claimed by the Islamic State group, was the deadliest to hit US troops since they deployed to Syria in 2014.Nineteen people, including four Americans, were killed in the attack on a grill house in the central market of the flashpoint town of Manbij.Run by a Washington-backed town council since the US-led coalition and its ground partners pushed out jihadists in 2016, Manbij has been a realm of relative quiet. The town was considered sufficiently secure that a group of top US military commanders and lawmakers strolled through the same market place without body armor during a tour of the area last summer. But US military presence in the town has been thrown into question after US President Donald Trump’s shock announcement last month that he would pull all American troops from Syria, claiming the IS had been “largely defeated.”“We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” Trump tweeted in December in announcing his intention to bring back US troops “NOW.”Vice President Mike Pence repeated the claim Wednesday, saying the Islamic State “caliphate has crumbled” and its network “has been defeated.” His comments in a speech at the State Department came shortly after the US military announced that American soldiers were among those killed in Manbij.Trump’s shifting timetable for pulling US troops out of Syria, a country he described as “sand and death,” has left allies and other players in the region confused and jockeying for influence over a withdrawal strategy that appeared to be a work in progress.Critics have said a pullout was premature, that IS was still not defeated and a withdrawal could lead to a power vacuum that would fuel even more violence. It also led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.Since then, US officials and Trump himself have suggested the withdrawal would be slower than initially believed. White House national security adviser John Bolton said two conditions would have to be met, including the protection of America’s local Kurdish allies in northern Syria, and the total defeat of IS.Bolton also reassured Israel of Washington’s abiding support for the Jewish state’s security, seeking to allay fears of increasing Iranian aggression after US troops are pulled out from Syria. The US Defense Department has previously reported only two American personnel killed in combat in Syria, in separate incidents.Wednesday’s attack came as tensions between Washington’s Syrian Kurdish ground partner and its NATO ally Turkey flare.Ankara views the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a “terrorist offshoot” of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a deadly insurgency for self-rule in southeastern Turkey since 1984.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened an all-out offensive to clear the group from its border.

Abbas’s Palestine TV airs image equating shopping at Jerusalem mall with treason-Fatah says purchasing goods at Israeli supermarket king Rami Levy’s stores amounts to ‘supporting the occupation’-By TOI staff-JAN 21,19

Palestine TV, the Palestinian Authority’s official channel, has broadcast an image that equates shopping at a new mall in East Jerusalem, built by Israeli supermarket king Rami Levy, with treason. The image includes a drawing of a woman holding onto a shopping cart of merchandise while passing a mirror. Her reflection shows the same shopping cart full of skulls.A statement implores Palestinians not to shop at the new shopping center, Atarot Mall, on the seam between Arab and Jewish Jerusalem.“Do not be the occupation’s partner in the Judaization of the city,” it says, according to Palestinian Media Watch, an organization that monitors the Palestinian press. “Economic normalization is treason.”PMW said the bottom of the image includes a call from the National and Islamic Forces, a local group of Palestinians activists, to boycott the mall.“Calls from the National and Islamic Forces to boycott this complex as it finances the occupation and strives to Judaize the city,” it says.PA TV broadcasted the image on a program called “Affairs from the Capital“ on January 13, according to PMW.The Atarot Mall, a NIS 200 million ($54 million) project, opened its doors to the public on January 8.It’s at the northern end of Jerusalem, where Palestinian and Jewish neighborhoods brush up against one another, inside the expanded municipal limits where Israel has claimed sovereignty since the 1967 war.Atarot adjoins Beit Hanina, a large Palestinian East Jerusalem neighborhood that is bordered by another Palestinian neighborhood, Shuafat, and the Jewish-majority neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze’ev and Ramot. Nearby but outside the city limits is the Palestinian town of Hizma, and several other villages. It took five years to construct the 25,000-square-meter mall with its 13,000 square meters of commercial space.Levy has said he doesn’t care about “the nationality of the people who shop here, work here.”“Let’s talk less about who’s who. Let’s just shop together, serve each other and respect one another,” he said in January. In a recent statement, Fatah, PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s party, called on Palestinians to boycott all of Rami Levy’s businesses.“Shopping at Rami Levy is treason,” Fatah spokesman Osama Qawasma wrote on Facebook on January 8. “Fatah calls on the Palestinian people to completely boycott Rami Levy’s colonial settler markets. Shopping or purchasing or renting space in them constitutes betrayal of the homeland.”Rami Levy’s chain operates dozens of supermarkets in Israel and the West Bank.Qawasma added purchasing goods from Rami Levy markets amounts “to supporting the occupation and its economy that is used to kill our youth, confiscate our land, build colonies and Judaize Jerusalem.”

UAE, Israeli officials take private jet from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv — report-Emirati paper says senior officials were aboard plane on direct flight that flew over Saudi airspace-By TOI staff-JAN 21,19

Senior officials from the United Arab Emirates and Israel traveled together on a private jet from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv, flying over Saudi airspace to Ben Gurion airport late last week, according to a report Thursday by the Emirati newspaper Al Khaleej Online (Arabic). The plane was transporting Israeli officials back to Tel Aviv after a secret visit to Abu Dhabi to prepare for a supposed “surprise visit” by UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Israel, the report said, citing high-level Emirati sources. The trip is set to reportedly precede a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the UAE.According to the report, the Emirati foreign minister and the head of UAE intelligence Tahnoun bin Zayed were aboard the flight to Tel Aviv. The report further noted that Riyadh gave Abu Dhabi the “green light” for the flight, which journeyed directly from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv over Saudi Arabia, without stopping in Amman, Jordan as is usually the case. Jordan and Israel have a peace treaty and run direct flights between Amman and Tel Aviv. The UAE and Israel do not have official diplomatic ties. The Al Khaleej report cited Ynet reporter Itay Blumenthal who tweeted a photo of the flight’s path and wrote: “A very interesting flight from the Gulf: A private jet (9H-VCL) arrives directly from Abu #Dhabi.”A very interesting flight from the Gulf: A private jet (9H-VCL) arrives directly from Abu #Dhabi ???????? to #Israel ???????? It was the first visit by an Israeli leader in over two decades. The previous trip by an Israeli leader to Oman took place in 1996, when Shimon Peres visited. That same month, Israel’s Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev paid a state visit to the UAE to watch the Israeli delegation compete at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, which it did for the first time ever in an Arabian Gulf state under its national flag, after the UAE succumbed to pressure from international sports officials. Her trip marked the first time a minister from Israel attended a sports event in the Gulf.As part of the trip, Regev visited Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque accompanied by officials from the UAE, touring the Muslim world’s third largest house of worship, after mosques in Mecca and Medina. In another historic, dramatic first, Israel’s national anthem was played at the judo tournament where judoka Sagi Muki won a gold medal.Regev was visibly moved as she hung the gold medallion around Muki’s neck and burst into tears as the anthem played.Netanyahu is also said to be working toward normalizing relations with other Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

IDF says Hamas member arrested after crossing into Israel from Gaza-Man immediately apprehended; Palestinians throw rocks, fire bombs and grenades at Israeli troops during weekly protest, IDF responds with tear gas, live fire-By TOI staff-21 January 2019

A Palestinian who was arrested after he crossed the border from Gaza into Israel on Friday morning told interrogators he was a member of the Hamas terrorist organization, the army said in a statement. The man breached the border fence to the north of the Gaza Strip and immediately surrendered before he was apprehended by Israeli troops, the IDF spokesperson’s unit said.Hebrew-language media reported that he was unarmed.Around 10,000 Palestinians participated in riots along the border on Friday afternoon, throwing rocks, fire bombs and hand grenades at Israeli troops, and burning tires. Israeli soldiers reportedly responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire.A number of Palestinians briefly breached the border and entered Israel before quickly returning to Gaza, Hadashot news reported. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said that 43 people were injured in the clashes, including two members of the press and three medical personnel.Hamas leader Ahmed Bahar warned the prime minister that the protesters would continue to “humiliate” Israel.“Netanyahu, we are continuing with the help of God,” said Bahar, according to Hadashot news. “Our people are holding many cards that will humiliate the criminal Zionist enemy.”Israel will decide whether to allow the next delivery of economic aid from Qatar to enter the Strip based on the level of violence at the protests, the Haaretz daily reported.Friday’s violence marked the first major test for new IDF chief of staff Aviv Kohavi, who was sworn in as the 22nd commander of the Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday.Since March, Palestinians have been holding weekly protests on the border that Israel has accused Gaza’s Hamas rulers of using as a cover for attacks on troops and attempts to breach the security fence. Israel has demanded an end to the violent demonstrations along the border in any future ceasefire agreement. The “March of Return” organizing committee on Friday demanded that Israel lift its blockade of the coastal enclave, saying that they were “ready to stand up to Israel and its policies.”Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza since the Hamas terror group, which is sworn to Israel’s destruction, seized the territory from the internationally backed Palestinian Authority in 2007. It says the blockade is in place in order to prevent weapons and other military equipment from entering the Strip.Last Friday a Palestinian woman was shot dead by troops when 13,000 people rioted at the border, the Gaza’s health ministry said. On Monday the ministry said a 14-year-old succumbed to wounds sustained when he was hit in the head by a bullet. At least 15 other Palestinians were injured by Israeli fire during last Friday’s border riots, the ministry said. One of them was reportedly a journalist, who was hurt when an ambulance was hit.An Israeli soldier was lightly injured, the IDF said.Last Friday, Palestinians along the border also launched balloons laden with incendiary devices across the border into Israel.Israel’s air force attacked two Hamas posts in northern Gaza in response, the IDF said.On Saturday, terrorists fired a rocket toward Israel which landed in an open field in the Sdot Negev area, according to local authorities. There were no reports of damage or injuries. In recent weeks, Hamas has ramped up its threats of renewed violence along the Gaza border after Israel halted the transfer of $15 million of Qatari funds to the terror group after an exchange of fire. The funds are part of a series of six $15 million deposits Israel is allowing Qatar to deliver to Hamas as part of a highly contentious ceasefire agreement. The funds are meant ostensibly to pay the group’s civilian workers, though some Israeli officials — including former defense minister Avigdor Liberman — maintain the money will be used for Hamas’s terrorist activities.Judah Ari Gross and agencies contributed to this report.

Clashes break out in France as 'yellow vests' stage latest protest-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-BY Noemie Olive and Sudip Kar-Gupta-January 21, 2019

PARIS (Reuters) - Clashes broke out throughout France on Saturday, as an estimated 84,000 "yellow vests" demonstrators took to the streets in a 10th consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron's government. The demonstrations passed off relatively peacefully in Paris where 7,000 turned up, although Reuters Television reporters saw scuffles briefly break out between police and demonstrators, some wearing masks, in the capital's Invalides district.Protesters threw firecrackers, bottles and stones at police who responded with water canon and tear gas to push them back."Macron, resign!" some of the protesters shouted. The "yellow vests" protests - named after the fluorescent jackets French motorists are required to carry in their cars - began in November over plans to raise fuel taxes. The number of demonstrators on Saturday was roughly the same as last week. The fuel tax hikes were subsequently scrapped, yet the movement has morphed into a broader protest against Macron's government and general anger over taxes and the cost of living."How can we continue to live with so little?" said Bernard Grignan, a 65-year old retired manager who took part in the Paris demonstrations.-10,000 IN TOULOUSE-In Paris, some demonstrators carried mock coffins symbolizing the 10 people who have died during the protests, mainly due to accidents when demonstrators blocked roads.December's demonstrations saw some of the worst violence in decades in Paris, as rioters burned cars and vandalized shops.Protests in Paris this month have not seen the same level of trouble, although video of a former French boxing champion punching and kicking police in Paris shocked many.Despite a relative decline in crowd trouble in Paris, however, disturbances have flared up in other cities.According to official figures, the biggest demonstration on Saturday occurred in the southern city of Toulouse, where around 10,000 people took part. The demonstration turned violent as evening fell, as protesters vandalized a bank and other shops. Eight people were injured and there were 23 arrests.Reuters correspondents also reported disturbances in Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille, while the local government building was attacked in Angers, northwest of Paris.Macron has launched a series of national debates to help quell public discontent and restore his standing. However, Angers member of parliament Matthieu Orphelin, a member of Macron's ruling 'Le Republique En Marche!' party, said he would cancel talks with members of the "yellow vests" movement in light of the trouble in Angers."It fills me with fury to see our beautiful town attacked in this way, in particular the damage caused to symbols of the Republic," Orphelin said in a statement.(Additional reporting by Emmanuel Jarry, Charles Platiau, Julie Rimbert in Toulouse, Marc Leras in Marseille and Claude Canellas in Bordeaux; editing by Alexander Smith and Jason Neely)
