Trump said to be considering son-in-law Kushner for chief of staff role-Senior adviser tasked with administration’s plans for Middle East peace reportedly eyed for key White House role, as US president scrambles to find replacement for Kelly-By Agencies and TOI staff-DEC 17,18

Jared Kushner is being considered for the White House chief of staff position, CBS News reported Thursday.Kushner met with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of him taking the job and replacing John Kelly, who is set to leave at the end of the year, the outlet reported.Kushner, an Orthodox Jew who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, is tasked with leading the US administration’s Middle East peace efforts and has been serving as Trump’s senior adviser since the president took office.Trump is scrambling to find a new chief of staff after his first choice to replace Kelly — Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff — bailed at the last minute, and several other potential successors signaled they weren’t interested in the job.As quickly as names were being floated, candidates appeared to be pulling themselves from consideration, underscoring the challenges of working for a mercurial president who has acknowledged that he likes to surround himself with chaos and despises any suggestion he’s being managed.Trump’s administration has set records for staff turnover, and the president has often struggled to attract experienced political professionals, a challenge that has grown more difficult with the upcoming threat of costly Democratic oversight investigations and an uncertain political environment.Trump has already burned through two chiefs of staff — a former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a retired Marine four-star general — subjecting them to regular humiliation and ridicule.Former RNC Chairman Reince Priebus’s departure from the White House was unceremoniously announced by tweet. Nearly 18 months later, Trump stepped on an orderly succession plan for Kelly, making a surprise Saturday announcement on the White House lawn that the retired general would be leaving by year’s end.Ayers’ ascension and Kelly’s departure looked like a done deal Friday night, according to multiple people in and close to the administration, with an announcement planned for Monday. Trump and Ayers had discussed the job for months, and the president had already been steering inquiries to the Pence staffer rather than Kelly. These people, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters. But Trump jumped the gun Saturday, and Ayers re-evaluated his decision. While a White House official said Ayers’ decision was driven by a desire to return to Georgia to be closer to his family, people familiar with his thinking said he was also worried about scrutiny of his former political consulting business. He and Trump also could not reach agreement on Ayers’ length of service. Ayers wanted to serve on an interim basis; Trump wanted a two-year commitment.Trump was stung by Ayers’ decision to back out, according to people close to him. The embarrassment comes at a pivotal time for Trump, as he prepares for re-election while facing an expected onslaught of investigations from Democrats who will take control of the House and amid the ongoing Russia probe. When Trump appoints a replacement for Kelly, he will set a record for most chiefs of staff within the first 24 months of an administration, according to an analysis by Kathryn Dunn Tenpas of the Brookings Institution.Yet Trump once mocked his predecessor for chief of staff turnover.“3 Chief of Staffs in less than 3 years of being President: Part of the reason why @BarackObama can’t manage to pass his agenda,” Trump wrote in a 2012 tweet.Trump had said Saturday that he would be announcing Kelly’s replacement in the next day or two. But with Ayers no longer waiting in the wings, there is fear that Trump may not have someone in place in time for Kelly’s departure or that he will pick the first person who comes to mind as he tries to counter perceptions that no one wants the position.Trump has told confidants that he is eager to bring on someone he gets along with as his third chief of staff. While he still had a measure of respect for Kelly, the men’s personal relationship had long been frosty. This time, Trump has told allies, he wants someone he can chat with — trading gossip and complaining about media coverage — as well as someone more attuned politically.Trump has also told people around him that he misses the more freewheeling feel of the Oval Office under Priebus and would not let his new chief of staff set the kinds of limits he allowed Kelly to impose.

Vienna says still wants to give citizenship to descendants of Holocaust victims-Rebutting claim that far-right Freedom Party stalling the move, Austrian envoy says it has broad consensus but is part of a ‘slow process’-By Raphael Ahren-17 December 2018

The government in Vienna remains fully committed to advancing legislation granting citizenship to the descendants of Austrian Holocaust victims, Austrian officials insisted Thursday, rebuffing a report claiming that parts of the ruling coalition were stalling on the promised reform.“Amending the Austrian Citizenship Law in order to extend the Austrian citizenship to Shoah victims’ descendants enjoys wide support by all political parties represented in the Austrian Parliament,” Martin Weiss, the country’s ambassador in Tel Aviv, told The Times of Israel.“It is true that the current overhaul of the Austrian Citizenship Law, of which this provision is part of, is a slow process. However, amending basic citizenship laws is — entirely unrelated to the issue of extending the Austrian citizenship to Shoah victims’ descendants — always a politically sensitive process,” he added.Besides the descendants of Holocaust victims, the planned citizenship law reform would also include granting Austrian passports to German speakers in South Tyrol and UK citizens with Austrian roots.Earlier on Thursday, the Haaretz newspaper reported that the plan to give descendants of Holocaust victims Austrian passports “has been stymied” by the far-right Freedom Party, “saying it would set a precedent for other foreigners.”The Freedom Party, known by its German acronym FPOe, is the junior partner in Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s ruling coalition. Due to its Nazi past, the local Jewish community and the State of Israel are boycotting the party and its officials.Haaretz’s description of the situation is “very misleading,” according to Weiss.“No member of the Austrian government is on record opposing the extension of the Austrian citizenship to the descendants of Shoah victims,” the ambassador said. “Quite on the contrary: the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor [FPOe leader Heinz-Christian Strache] and Foreign Minister [Karin Kneissl] have repeatedly said — on the record — that they are in full support. To suggest otherwise is simply false.”The current government has repeatedly committed itself to extending Austrian citizenship to the descendants of Holocaust victims, including in a formal decision in March, Weiss added. Indeed, the move “enjoys wide support by all political parties represented in the Austrian parliament,” he stressed. Also Foreign Minister Kneissl, who is affiliated with but not a member of the FPOe, on Thursday reiterated her government’s commitment to advancing the planned amendment to the country’s citizenship law.At the same time, she criticized as “mistimed” an initiative by the Social Democrats, who sit in the opposition, who on Thursday introduced their own bill that would grant Austrian citizenship to descendants of people who fled the country due to Nazi persecution.Austria would first have to withdraw from a 1968 European Council Convention on the Reduction of Cases of Multiple Nationality and on Military Obligations in Cases of Multiple Nationality, she argued. In a November interview with The Times of Israel, Kneissl had said that she was “very glad indeed that the descendants of Austrian Holocaust survivors — even in the second and third generation — will soon be able to receive Austrian citizenship while maintaining their current nationality.”At the time, she said it was too early to say when exactly descendants of Holocaust survivors could apply for Austrian passports.“We are in the process of preparing a detailed legislative proposal for this, so it is a bit too early to say when this new law will be adopted by parliament. But we are speaking about months, not years,” she said.“There will definitely be a few hundred Israelis who are interested in receiving the Austrian citizenship, maybe more,” she estimated.According to current Austrian law, only children — but not grandchildren — of Austrian citizens persecuted during the Holocaust could claim Austrian nationality. The coalition agreement struck by Chancellor Kurz’s People’s Party and Strache’s far-right FPOe promised to consider changing the existing situation.

1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Israel said ‘disappointed’ by Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem only-Foreign Ministry issues reserved response to Canberra’s declaration, welcomes opening of defense and trade office; but senior officials say: ‘We expected more’-By TOI staff-DEC 17,18

Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday evening issued a positive yet decidedly tempered response to Australia’s decision to recognize West Jerusalem as the nation’s capital. In a short statement, the ministry — which, due to the lack of a foreign minister, is directly under the authority of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — did not comment on the recognition itself, but called Canberra’s decision to open a defense and trade office in Jerusalem “a step in the right direction.”It also welcomed Australia’s stance on “sanctions against Iran and its steadfast position in support of Israel at the UN and against anti-Semitism.”Meanwhile a senior Israeli official told Hebrew media anonymously that Israel was disappointed by Australia’s decision to stress that its recognition only pertained to West Jerusalem.“We’re disappointed with the Australian decision…[Prime Minister Scott] Morrison only went half-way. It’s a step in the right direction, but we expected more,” the official said. The official said Israel was also unhappy that Australia continued to support the nuclear deal with Iran, which Morrison has said in the past he was open to reviewing.Unlike the US last December, Australia did not recognize all of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. It also stopped short of announcing a relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv, saying it would only do so after a peace accord is achieved with the Palestinians.Yuval Rotem, director general of the Foreign Ministry and a former Israeli ambassador to Canberra, issued a warmer response, tweeting: “I welcome Australia’s announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, reflecting the Jewish people’s historical bond to Jerusalem, and a practical approach to the future of the peace process in our region.”Minister for Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud) tweeted: “Australia is a great friend of Israel and we greatly appreciate our friendship and warm relations. But there is no such thing as ‘West Jerusalem’ and ‘East Jerusalem.’ There is only Jerusalem, the eternal and undivided capital of the state of Israel.”#Australia is a great friend of #Israel and we greatly appreciate our friendship and warm relations. But there is no such thing as “West Jerusalem” and “East Jerusalem”. There is only Jerusalem, the eternal and undivided capital of the state of Israel.— Tzachi Hanegbi | @Tzachi_Hanegbi) December 15, 2018-Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) called the Australian statement “difficult to understand…all of Jerusalem is our eternal capital, not just a part of it.”Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis (Likud) thanked Canberra, but he too added that “all of Jerusalem has been our capital for the past 3,000 years.”Morrison, in a speech early Saturday, said: “The Australian government has decided that Australia now recognizes West Jerusalem, as the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government, is the capital of Israel.”He said the decision respects both a commitment to a two-state solution and longstanding respect for relevant UN Security Council resolutions.Morrison also committed to recognizing the aspirations for a future state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital when the city’s status is determined in a peace deal. While the embassy move is delayed, Morrison said his government will establish a defense and trade office in Jerusalem and will also start looking for an appropriate site for the embassy.“We look forward to moving our embassy to West Jerusalem when practical, in support of and after final status of determination,” he said, adding that work on a new site for the embassy was under way.The prime minister said it was in Australia’s interests to support “liberal democracy” in the Middle East and took aim at the United Nations he said was a place where Israel is “bullied.”The opposition Labor party slammed Morrison for putting “self-interest ahead of the national interest.”“Recognizing West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, while continuing to locate Australia’s embassy in Tel Aviv, is nothing more than a face-saving exercise,” shadow minister for foreign affairs Penny Wong said in a statement.“This is a decision which is all risk and no gain,” she said, adding it puts Australia “out of step” with the international community.Palestinians excoriated the decision, with top official Saeb Erekat saying the move was “irresponsible.”Erekat, who serves as a top aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and is head of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, said the decision was “one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security.”The Palestinian negotiator also dismissed Australian claims that the move would help advance a two-state solution, saying Canberra refuses to recognize Palestine as a state, votes against the Palestinian right to self-determination, and continues to trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank.“All of Jerusalem remains a final status issue for negotiations, while East Jerusalem, under international law, is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory,” he added in the statement.Australia had on Friday warned citizens to take care while traveling in neighboring Muslim-majority Indonesia ahead of the expected announcement by Morrison. While Australia’s then-foreign minister Julie Bishop said in June that “the Australian government will not be moving our embassy to Jerusalem,” Morrison said in October that he was “open-minded” regarding following the American example. But Morrison’s statement was seen by many Australians as a political stunt. Critics called it a cynical attempt to win votes in a by-election in October for a Sydney seat with a high Jewish population.Recognizing Jerusalem is expected to help the embattled Australian PM — who faces the prospect of an election drubbing next year — with Jewish and conservative Christian voters and win him friends in the White House.Opposition leader Bill Shorten said Saturday that the decision to recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital but not move the embassy there was a “humiliating backdown” from the October by-election campaign.“What I’m worried is that Mr. Morrison put his political interest ahead of our national interest,” Shorten told reporters. Both Israel and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community. It sees the entire city as its capital. For decades the international community maintained that the city’s status should be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians. Critics say declaring Jerusalem the capital of either inflames tensions and prejudges the outcome of final status peace talks.Morrison’s supporters argue Israel has the right to choose its own capital and peace talks are dead in the water, so there is no peace to prejudge. But the move still risks heightening unrest, not least in Australia’s immediate neighbor and the world’s most populous Muslim nation.Indonesia’s government, facing domestic pressure at home, had reacted angrily earlier this year, when Morrison floated the idea of both recognizing Jerusalem and moving the Australian embassy there. The issue has put the conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement on hold.Raphal Ahren and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Bahrain defends Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as Israeli capital-After Arab League lashes out at Canberra, Manama’s FM says its comments are ‘irresponsible’ and asserts move does not hurt Palestinians-By TOI staff-DEC 17,18

As Palestinians and the Arab League on Saturday condemned Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the move was somewhat surprisingly defended by one Arab nation — Bahrain. The Arab League in a statement said it “strongly condemns” Australia’s move which it called “irresponsible and biased” and “contrary to international law.” It warned that the decision would only “encourage the occupation to continue its aggression, arrogance, settlement and defiance of international resolutions” and added that the move could have serious ramifications for Arab-Australian relations. But Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa took issue with the statement, saying in a tweet: “These are irresponsible statements. Australia’s position does not hamper the legitimate demands of the Palestinians and first and foremost East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. It also does not contradict the Arab Peace Initiative.”Israel and Bahrain do not have diplomatic relations, but are said to have solid clandestine ties. Both countries see in Iran a strategic threat.Earlier this month Al Khalifa tweeted support for Israel’s operation to expose and destroy Hezbollah’s cross-border tunnels and in May said the Jewish state had the right to defend itself.Australia on Saturday officially recognized West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, but a contentious embassy shift from Tel Aviv will not occur until a peace settlement is achieved.“The Australian government has decided that Australia now recognizes West Jerusalem, as the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government, is the capital of Israel,” he said.He said the decision respects both a commitment to a two-state solution and longstanding respect for relevant UN Security Council resolutions.Morrison also committed to recognizing the aspirations for a future state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital when the city’s status is determined in a peace deal.“All of Jerusalem remains a final status issue for negotiations, while East Jerusalem, under international law, is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory,” he said. While the embassy move is delayed, Morrison said his government will establish a defense and trade office in Jerusalem and will also start looking for an appropriate site for the embassy.Top Palestinian official Saeb Erekat issued a withering response, calling on Arab nations to sever their ties with Canberra and saying the decision was “one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security.”Erekat, who serves as a top aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and is head of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, also dismissed Australian claims that the move would help advance a two-state solution, saying Canberra refuses to recognize Palestine as a state, votes against the Palestinian right to self-determination, and continues to trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank.Jordan also condemned Canberra, saying its move was “biased towards Israel” and only served to “perpetuate the occupation.”Morrison’s move was seen by many Australians as a political stunt. Recognizing Jerusalem is expected to help the embattled Australian PM — who faces the prospect of an election drubbing next year — with Jewish and conservative Christian voters and win him friends in the White House.Australia’s opposition Labor party slammed Morrison for putting “self-interest ahead of the national interest.”“Recognizing West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, while continuing to locate Australia’s embassy in Tel Aviv, is nothing more than a face-saving exercise,” shadow minister for foreign affairs Penny Wong said in a statement.“This is a decision which is all risk and no gain,” she said, adding it puts Australia “out of step” with the international community. Both Israel and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. Top Palestinian official Saeb Erekat responded Saturday to Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, calling the move “irresponsible.”Erekat, who serves as a top aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and is head of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, said the decision was “one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security.”The Palestinian negotiator also dismissed Australian claims that the move would help advance a two-state solution, saying Canberra refuses to recognize Palestine as a state, votes against the Palestinian right to self-determination, and continues to trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank.“All of Jerusalem remains a final status issue for negotiations, while East Jerusalem, under international law, is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory,” he added in the statement.Australia on Saturday officially recognized West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, but a contentious embassy shift from Tel Aviv will not occur until a peace settlement is achieved.“The Australian government has decided that Australia now recognizes West Jerusalem, as the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government, is the capital of Israel,” he said.He said the decision respects both a commitment to a two-state solution and longstanding respect for relevant UN Security Council resolutions.Morrison also committed to recognizing the aspirations for a future state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital when the city’s status is determined in a peace deal. While the embassy move is delayed, Morrison said his government will establish a defense and trade office in Jerusalem and will also start looking for an appropriate site for the embassy.“We look forward to moving our embassy to West Jerusalem when practical, in support of and after final status of determination,” he said, adding that work on a new site for the embassy was under way.The prime minister said it was in Australia’s interests to support “liberal democracy” in the Middle East and took aim at the United Nations he said was a place where Israel is “bullied.”The opposition Labor party slammed Morrison for putting “self-interest ahead of the national interest.”“Recognizing West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, while continuing to locate Australia’s embassy in Tel Aviv, is nothing more than a face-saving exercise,” shadow minister for foreign affairs Penny Wong said in a statement.“This is a decision which is all risk and no gain,” she said, adding it puts Australia “out of step” with the international community. The General Delegation of Palestine to Australia and New Zealand on Saturday released a statement linking Morrison’s decision to domestic politics.“Many strong arguments have been advanced between Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s floating the idea during the Wentworth by-election campaign and now and most of them have exposed the faulty thinking and flimsy pretexts that underpin the case of the proponents of this move,” the statement said.Australia had on Friday warned citizens to take care while traveling in neighboring Muslim-majority Indonesia ahead of the expected announcement by Morrison. While Australia’s then-foreign minister Julie Bishop said in June that “the Australian government will not be moving our embassy to Jerusalem,” Morrison said in October that he was “open-minded” regarding following the American example. But Morrison’s statement was seen by many Australians as a political stunt. Australia’s spy agency warned the move could provoke further violent unrest in Israel, while opposition lawmakers accused the prime minister of cynically pandering to Jewish voters ahead of a crucial by-election.Recognizing Jerusalem is expected to help the embattled Australian PM — who faces the prospect of an election drubbing next year — with Jewish and conservative Christian voters and win him friends in the White House. His supporters argue Israel has the right to choose its own capital and peace talks are dead in the water, so there is no peace to prejudge. The issue has put the conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement on hold.

Mashaal calls for guerrilla warfare to ‘liberate West Bank’ and ‘all Palestine’-Former Hamas chief says ‘resistance’ is ‘pinnacle of life’ and defines Palestinians: ‘I resist, therefore I am’-By TOI staff-DEC 17,18

The former leader of the Hamas terror group has called on West Bank Palestinians to prepare for “guerrilla warfare” in the West Bank and ongoing “resistance” to force Israel to retreat from the territory.Khaled Mashaal said this would be a step on the way to its retreat from “all of Palestine.”Speaking on the Al-Jazeera TV network on December 2, Mashaal, in a play on René Descartes’ famous philosophical proposition, said: “The Palestinians say ‘I resist, therefore I am.'”In comments translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, Mashaal said that according to the Quran, “Jihad, resistance, and self-defense [are] the essence of life.“The abandonment of Jihad leads to humiliation and death. Hence, resistance is the pinnacle of life. A person who lives under occupation, and who does not resist, is in fact dead.”Mashaal, who headed Hamas’s political bureau between 1996 and 2017, claimed there was no alternative way to “liberate” the Palestinian nation.“When did Israel withdraw from southern Lebanon? It wasn’t a result of negotiations — not in Madrid and not in Washington. It retreated as a result of resistance. When did it retreat from Gaza? After the [Second] Intifada in 2000 and the heroic resistance. Today we are being called and preparing to force Israel to retreat from Jerusalem and from the West Bank. Allah willing, this is on the way to its retreat from all of Palestine,” he said.Former Hamas Leader Khaled Mashal Calls for West Bank "Guerrilla Warfare," States: "I Resist, Therefore I Am" pic.twitter.com/OyZr0Ehc0q— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) December 14, 2018-He called on the West Bank’s Fatah to join Hamas in popular resistance against Israel, saying it should take an example from the people of the Gaza Strip.“The West Bank spans over 5,600 square kilometers, and has mountains and valleys. I’m from there, I know the landscape. It has everything necessary for guerilla warfare. Why are we not preparing for that?”A Fatah spokesman on Thursday called on Palestinians to ignore calls for a new armed uprising against Israel in the West Bank, urging them to instead step up peaceful protests against the Jewish state’s military rule.“We need to be smart…and not listen to the talk of the demagogues about the necessity of going to an armed confrontation,” Fatah spokesman Osama Qawasma told Palestine TV, the official Palestinian Authority television channel, Thursday night. “My words are candid. We must escalate popular resistance in the Palestinian lands.”Hamas has for years called on Palestinians to stir up a confrontation with Israel in the West Bank.On Friday the Palestinian Authority police cracked down on a Hamas protest in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, beating demonstrators with batons and throwing stun grenades. Some 50 Hamas activists confronted Palestinian forces after Muslim prayers on Friday, as the terror group marked the 31st anniversary of its establishment.Hamas condemned the PA for suppressing the demonstrations. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement on the Hamas website that the “barbaric behavior” was proof the PA “denigrated the blood of the martyrs.”The Palestinian Authority, led by president Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah party, cooperates closely with Israeli security, while Hamas has fought three wars with the Jewish state since 2008.Hamas cells continue operate in the West Bank despite PA and Israeli efforts to arrest them. The protests come amid a surge of terror attacks in the West Bank, some of them claimed by Hamas. Two Israeli soldiers were killed Thursday and two other Israelis injured when a man opened fire at a bus stop at a settlement in the West Bank, before fleeing.Hamas has claimed two other recent shooting attacks in the West Bank but has so far not taken responsibility for Thursday’s attack, near the settlement of Givat Assaf. The Israeli military says it believes a Hamas cell conducted a drive-by shooting attack near the settlement of Ofra Sunday, in which seven people were wounded. One victim’s baby was delivered prematurely in an emergency operation, but died on Wednesday afternoon.Agencies and Adam Rasgon contributed to this report.

Wave of hoax bomb threats made across US; San Francisco JCC evacuated-Law enforcement agencies say threats not credible; were meant to cause disruption and compel recipients into sending money-By Agencies-DEC 17,18

A wave of bomb threats emailed Thursday to hundreds of schools, businesses and government buildings across the US triggered searches, evacuations and fear — but there were no signs of explosives, and authorities said the scare appeared to be a crude extortion attempt. Some 500 people were safely evacuated from the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco after a nearby bank was targeted in the hoax.San Francisco Police were called to at least nine locations around 10 a.m., including the JCC, which was ordered to evacuate after a threat was made against the San Francisco Fireman’s Credit Union, located directly across the street.Just before 11 a.m., JCC executive director Marci Glazer received a call from the police, informing her of the bomb threat and the need to get people out of the building.“This is something we are completely prepared for and practice on a regular basis,” she said.JCC staff accounted for preschoolers, gym users, swimmers in the pool, seniors and others, and ushered them out of the building within eight minutes, according to Glazer. The all clear notice came less than two hours later, when people were allowed back in the building.By 1 p.m., the JCC’s website announced that the building and the fitness center had reopened. The preschool remained closed for the day, and afterschool has been canceled.Police presence seen outside the @JCCSF. SFPD are investigating reports of bomb threats throughout the city. https://t.co/a8QcA3ui30 pic.twitter.com/ykALXo6ljx— NBC Bay Area (@nbcbayarea) December 13, 2018-Law enforcement agencies across the country dismissed the threats, saying they were meant to cause disruption and compel recipients into sending money and were not considered credible. Some of the emails had the subject line: “Think Twice.” They were sent from a spoofed email address. The sender claimed to have had an associate plant a small bomb in the recipient’s building and that the only way to stop him from setting it off was by making an online payment of $20,000 in Bitcoin.“We are currently monitoring multiple bomb threats that have been sent electronically to various locations throughout the city,” the New York City Police Department’s counterterrorism unit tweeted. “These threats are also being reported to other locations nationwide & are NOT considered credible at this time.”Other law enforcement agencies also dismissed the threats, which were written in a choppy style reminiscent of the Nigerian prince email scam. The Palm Beach County, Florida, sheriff’s office and the Boise, Idaho, police said they had no reason to believe that threats made to locations in those areas were credible. One of the emails wound up in a spam filter, Boise Police Chief William Bones said. The FBI said it is assisting law enforcement agencies that are dealing with the threats.“As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety,” the FBI said in a statement.Across the country, some schools closed early and others were evacuated or placed on lockdown because of the hoax. Authorities said a threat emailed to a school in Troy, Missouri, about 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of St. Louis, was sent from Russia. The bomb threats also prompted evacuations at city hall in Aurora, Illinois, the offices of the News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, a suburban Atlanta courthouse and businesses in Detroit.“Organizations nationwide, both public and private, have reported receiving emailed bomb threats today,” Michigan State Police spokeswoman Shannon Banner said. “They are not targeted toward any one specific sector.”Penn State University notified students via a text alert about threats to a half-dozen buildings and an airport on its main campus in State College, Pennsylvania. In an update, the school said the threat appeared to be part of a “national hoax.”Officials at Columbine High School in Colorado were dealing Thursday with a bomb threat of a different sort. Students were being kept inside for the rest of the school day after someone called in a bomb threat against the school. The Jefferson County, Colorado, Sheriff’s Office said the caller claimed to have placed explosive devices in the school and to be hiding outside with a gun. There is nothing to validate the threat that was found at Columbine, where 12 students and a teacher were killed by two students in 1999, according to Sheriff’s spokesman Mike Taplin. Two dozen other Colorado schools were also temporarily placed on lockout, meaning their doors were locked but classes continued normally, as the threat was investigated.Last month the Tel Aviv District Court sentenced an American-Israeli man, convicted of hoaxing US Jewish community centers and other targets around the world with thousands of bomb threats, to 10 years in prison. The 20-year-old, M., whose full name is withheld by a gag order in Israel, has been diagnosed with autism and also suffers from a brain tumor, which his parents and attorney argue impacted his behavior. But, while Judge Tzvi Gurfinkel acknowledged M.’s medical condition, he concluded that the young man was responsible for his actions and understood the difference between right and wrong.Authorities say he made thousands of threatening calls, mostly to community centers and schools in the US, from 2015 to 2017, using an online calling service that disguised his voice and allowed him to hide his identity. He also targeted hundreds of airlines and airports, malls, and police stations, in the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Britain, and tried to extort Republican State Senator Ernesto Lopez from Delaware.

Gunman who killed three in Strasbourg market shot dead by French police-Cherif Chekatt, who Islamic State says was one of its ‘soldiers,’ killed in exchange of fire in Neudorf area of city-By Marc Antoine BAUDOUX and Adam PLOWRIGHT-TOI-DEC 17,18

STRASBOURG, France (AFP) — French police on Thursday shot dead a gunman who had been on the run since killing three people at Strasbourg’s popular Christmas market.More than 700 French security forces had been hunting for 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt since the bloodshed on Tuesday night. He was believed to have been injured after exchanging fire with soldiers during the attack, but managed to escape and had not been seen since getting out of a taxi in the Neudorf area of the northern French city.Minutes before the fatal shooting on Thursday, a helicopter with powerful searchlight flew over Neudorf.Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters police swooped after the suspect was spotted in the street.Officers tried to arrest him, but he shot at police. “They immediately returned fire and neutralized the assailant,” Castaner said.Dozens of police vehicles converged on the area where police were applauded after the shooting. “Bravo!” some shouted as people gathered at the police cordon.Police in several other countries earlier joined the manhunt for Chekatt, a Strasbourg native and career criminal with at least 27 convictions in four European states. The Islamic State terrorist group said Thursday that he was one of their “soldiers.”The perpetrator of “the attack in the city of Strasbourg… is one of the soldiers of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target nationals of the coalition” against IS, the Amaq agency said in a message posted on Twitter. The terrorist group offered no evidence for the claim.Authorities published Chekatt’s picture late Wednesday with police describing him as dangerous and urging people not to approach him.A fifth person was detained by police for questioning on Thursday, in addition to the suspect’s parents and two brothers who have been in custody since Wednesday.Castaner has announced that the Strasbourg Christmas market would reopen on Friday.French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “the solidarity of the whole country” towards the victims as he arrived for a European summit in Brussels.“It is not only France that has been hit… but a great European city as well,” he added, referring to the seat of the European parliament in the eastern French city that lies on the border with Germany.-Plea to ‘yellow vests’-As police were hunting Chekatt Thursday, the French government urged “yellow vest” protesters not to hold another round of demonstrations this weekend, given the strain on the country’s security forces.Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux called on the anti-government protesters to be “reasonable” and not protest again Saturday, after nearly four weeks of often violent demonstrations which has led the government to offer a range of financial relief to low earners.“Our security forces have been deployed extensively these past few weeks,” Griveaux told CNews television.“It would be better if everyone could go about their business calmly on Saturday, before the year-end celebrations with their families, instead of demonstrating and putting our security forces to work once again,” he added. The “yellow vest” protesters, known for their fluorescent high-visibility jackets, had called for a fifth round of protests this Saturday. The protests began on November 17 over fuel tax increases, but snowballed into a revolt over living standards as well as Macron’s perceived indifference to the problems of ordinary citizens.Underscoring attempts to ease tensions, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed a proposed constitutional reform, which was to be debated in January, had been postponed to allow time for more discussions over local grievances. Some union leaders also put pressure on “yellow vests” not to demonstrate on Saturday so they would not overburden police as they dealt with security after the Strasbourg attack. But some “yellow vest” demonstrators dismissed calls to suspend protests.A 23-year-old protester was killed after he was hit by a truck on a roundabout in southern France near Avignon late on Thursday, the sixth person to have died during the weeks of demonstrations.-Wide search-Strasbourg’s location in the heart of western Europe means that Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg can be easily reached by car or train, making the search for Chekatt more complicated.Swiss police had reinforced border checks, while German authorities also widely published the photo of the suspect, which showed him with dark hair, a short beard and a visible mark on his forehead. In 2016, a jihadist responsible for an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin was shot and killed only three days later in Milan in northern Italy after travelling through the Netherlands and France. The Strasbourg suspect, who lived in a rundown apartment block a short drive from the city center, was flagged by French security forces in 2015 as a possible Islamic extremist.France has been hit by a wave of attacks from gunmen claiming allegiance to Al Qaeda or the Islamic State group since 2015, which have claimed the lives of 246 people before Tuesday’s attack, according to an AFP toll.No group has claimed responsibility for the Strasbourg attack, but social media accounts used by Islamic State sympathizers have celebrated the killings.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

EU court rejects Hamas appeal over terror listing-The terrorist group ruling the Gaza Strip had sought an end to a European freeze on its assets, imposed in the wake of 9/11 attacks-By Agencies and TOI staff-DEC 17,18

BRUSSELS, Belgium — A top EU court on Friday threw out an appeal by the Palestinian organization Hamas against its listing by the bloc as a terrorist organization. The General Court of the EU rejected a bid by Hamas, the terror group which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007, to end a freeze on assets held in the bloc that was imposed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States. The ruling by the Luxembourg-based court is the latest round in a protracted legal battle between the EU and Hamas, which has opposed the sanctions from the outset.“By its judgment today… the General Court dismisses Hamas’ appeal concerning the acts of the Council adopted between 2010 and 2014 and in 2017,” the bloc’s second-highest tribunal said.In July 2017 the European Court of Justice (ECJ) overturned an earlier ruling by the General Court that Hamas should be dropped from the terror list because the EU had made the decision based on information from the media and internet. The ECJ, the bloc’s highest court, ruled that the General Court had erred in law and should examine the case again. In Friday’s ruling, the General Court said the EU was entitled to list Hamas as a terrorist organization on the basis of a decision made by the British interior minister.“The General Court observes, contrary to Hamas’ submissions, that holding on to power following elections, the political nature of an organization or its participation in a government do not constitute grounds for avoiding the application of the rules,” the court said.

Yair Netanyahu says he’d ‘prefer’ if ‘all the Muslims leave’ Israel-PM’s son declares there will be no peace until one of the land’s two major religions departs, and he rather it wasn’t the Jews-By TOI staff-DEC 17,18

Yair Netanyahu has said there will not be peace in the land of Israel until either all the Jews or all the Muslims leave — and he would prefer the latter. The son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted the comment on Facebook on Thursday:“There will not be peace here until: 1. All the Jews leave the land of Israel. 2. All the Muslims leave the land of Israel.“I prefer the second option,” he added. The post had garnered over 750 reactions as of Friday evening in Israel, most of them in agreement. In a later post he added: “Do you know where there are no terror attacks? In Iceland and Japan. Coincidentally there’s also no Muslim population there.”It’s the second time in a week that the younger Netanyahu has posted a controversial comment online. On Monday, he posted on Facebook that the press, as well as left-wing NGOs and politicians, are “traitors.” His father disavowed the comment.Last year, Yair Netanyahu posted and then deleted an apparently anti-Semitic caricature of liberal Jewish financier George Soros.

Report: MBS mulling public Netanyahu meeting to counter Khashoggi fallout-Unnamed sources tell Middle East Eye website Saudi task force is considering ‘major stunt’ to help rehabilitate crown prince’s international image-By TOI staff-DEC 17,18

Saudi Arabia’s Muhammad bin Salman is considering a Camp David-style meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, a London-based website claimed, in what it said would be a grand diplomatic gesture intended to help rehabilitate the crown prince’s image in the wake of the brutal murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khasoggi.According to the Qatari-funded Middle East Eye website, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader is “seriously considering” pursuing a “game changing” summit with the Israeli and US leaders. The report quoted unnamed Saudi sources and could not be independently confirmed. The plan for a meeting with Netanyahu would purportedly include a public handshake modeled on the handshake between Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat following the signing of the peace agreement at Camp David under the auspices of US President Jimmy Carter in 1978.An emergency task-force has reportedly been set up to explore ways to deflect growing criticism of the crown prince, who is widely believed to have ordered Khashoggi’s murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.According to Middle East Eye, MBS hopes a public meeting with Netanyahu could help reframe him as a Middle East peace maker and paper over international criticism. He particularly seeks to stave off any action by the US Congress, a danger that will grow when Democrats take control of the House in January. In two motions on Friday, the Republican-controlled US Senate delivered an unusual rebuke of Trump’s response to the death of Khashoggi and signaled new skepticism from Capitol Hill toward the longtime Middle East ally. One measure recommended that the US end its assistance to Saudi Arabia for the war in Yemen. The other put the blame for the death of Khashoggi squarely on bin Salman. Both had been vigorously opposed by the Trump administration.“MBS asked his task force to study this proposal and he hinted that he liked the idea,” an unnamed Saudi official told Middle East Eye.“The task force agreed that without a major stunt, there is a real danger of a series of decisions from Congress that would fundamentally set back the Saudi-US relationship, which is key for the crown prince,” he said.US intelligence officials concluded that bin Salman must have at least known of the plot, but Trump has repeatedly praised the kingdom. The journalist, who had lived in the US and wrote for The Washington Post, had been critical of the Saudi regime. He was killed in what US officials have described as an elaborate plot when he visited the consulate for marriage paperwork.Saudi prosecutors have said a 15-man team sent to Istanbul killed Khashoggi and then dismembered his body, which has not been found. Those findings came after Saudi authorities spent weeks denying Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate.Trump has been reluctant to condemn the crown prince. He said the United States “intends to remain a steadfast partner” of the country, touted Saudi arms deals worth billions of dollars to the US and thanked the Saudis for plunging oil prices.Netanyahu on Wednesday appeared to defend Israel’s tacit support of Saudi Arabia in the face of growing criticism of the murder of the Saudi journalist. While he described Khashoggi’s brutal October 2 murder at the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate as “horrific,” he stressed that the gulf state’s stability was crucial for global stability.Israel and Saudi Arabia have no official relations and the kingdom does not recognize the Jewish state. Israel has hinted at clandestine ties with Saudi Arabia in recent years, stressing the two countries share an interest in countering Iran.
