None of us are OK:' witness describes 'mayhem' after N.S. parade tragedy-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

YARMOUTH, N.S. — A four-year-old girl is dead after a tragic accident at a Santa Claus parade in Yarmouth, N.S., police said Saturday, as a witness described a scene of terror that shattered the small port town's holiday celebration. The girl, who has not been publicly identified, was running along a passing parade float on one of the town's main thoroughfares when she fell underneath it just before 7 p.m. local time, police said. She was rushed to a local hospital by paramedics but was pronounced dead a short time later.Cpl. Dal Hutchinson, a public information officer with the Nova Scotia RCMP, described the event as "very, very tragic — and also very traumatic for everyone there."My understanding is there was a large group of people there — families — watching the Santa Claus parade when this incident took place," Hutchinson said in an interview Saturday night. He added that anyone who may have witnessed the incident should talk about it with others and seek support to deal with the trauma."Our thoughts are with this little girl's family during this very, very difficult time."Vance Webb, a retired machinist who lives on the outskirts of Yarmouth, attended Saturday's parade with his wife, stepson and three grandchildren."We were just watching the parade, and then about 30 feet away, I hear — all of a sudden, the float stops, and I kinda see something on the ground," Webb said in a phone interview."Then all of a sudden, we just heard screaming. It was pretty close to us."Webb said the entire scene descended into "mayhem" as people realized what had happened."People within 50 feet of it — none of us are OK. All the adults were crying. Everywhere I saw, there were hundreds of people crying," said Webb."This is really gonna affect the town."Parade organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday night.— by Adam Burns in Toronto-The Canadian Press

That tampon applicator you just flushed could end up on a beach-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

Waves of Change is a CBC series exploring the single-use plastic we're discarding, and why we need to clean up our act. You can be part of the community discussion by joining our Facebook group. From a distance, Lawlor Island looks pristine. But even though it's part of a provincial park, the small island in the mouth of Halifax harbour is not as unspoiled as it may first appear.Pieces of plastic dot the shoreline — fishing rope, bottles, caps, lids, coffee cups and lots of plastic tampon applicators."We do our beach cleanups every year … and we always find plastic tampon applicators," said Cathy McCarthy of the Friends of McNabs Island Society. "These applicators may be small and some people may think they're insignificant, but they're not."During a recent beach cleanup at Turtle Grove in Dartmouth, N.S., volunteers found 381 plastic tampon applicators in a 150-metre stretch of shoreline.Mark Butler, the policy director of the Ecology Action Centre, helped pick up garbage along the shore."I've done quite a few beach cleanups now, and frankly, I'm tired of cleaning up other people's garbage," he said. "We need to come up with a better solution."The problem is not as bad as it used to be, McCarthy said.Friends of McNabs has been cleaning up McNabs, the larger of the two islands that form McNabs and Lawlor Islands Provincial Park, since 1991."We used to find them by the hundreds and thousands," McCarthy said. "They would all float up onto the islands ... and they would just litter the beaches everywhere."When the municipality built five wastewater treatment plants about 10 years ago, McCarthy thought that would solve the problem. But it didn't.Halifax Water spokesperson James Campbell said plastic tampon applicators could still be ending up on beaches because they're carried in by tides or are flushed by recreational boaters or people on commercial vessels. During very heavy rainfalls, they may spill over Halifax Water's screens, Campbell said, but "those would be very rare events."Campbell said regardless of the source, applicators should never be flushed down the toilet."They should be going directly in the garbage can," he said. "Wastewater treatment plants are designed to treat human waste and toilet paper only. Why people continue to flush these down the toilet is a great mystery to us."The plastic applicators — and anything else that doesn't belong in the wastewater treatment system — are screened out, shredded and sent to the landfill.Alternatives to plastic applicators-People who menstruate could use thousands of tampons over a lifespan, so regardless of whether applicators end up in a landfill or on beaches, the amount of waste produced can be significant.McCarthy wonders why plastic tampon applicators are even necessary."Why not just not use them? Because it's another plastic thing we don't need," she said. "Plastic just doesn't go away. It lasts in our environment for hundreds of years."There are alternatives to plastic applicators. Some widely available tampons have cardboard applicators, while others have no applicator at all. An online crowdfunding campaign is underway to manufacture a reusable tampon applicator.Reusable cups made of silicone or latex are available, as well leakproof underwear, sponges and reusable pads.Butler said the actions of individuals to reduce plastic use and clean the environment do make a difference. But he said governments and corporations also have a role to play."We need systems change," he said."And I think definitely part of it is to make corporations responsible for the stuff they make. And if they're responsible through to the end of its life cycle, it's going to change how they think about things and what they design."Have a story idea or feedback? Email us: wavesofchange@cbc.ca

Ottawa gives Pride Toronto $450K for plan to improve LGBT safety-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

The federal government announced a $450,000 grant to help Pride Toronto develop strategies to make LGBT communities in Canada live more securely."For too long, the [LGBT] community has encountered injustice from various institutions in our society in ways that have prevented people from living their lives more fully and contributing their strengths to our country," said Bill Morneau, federal finance minister and MP for Toronto Centre, home to the city's Gay Village."We know that we have to do better."Morneau was joined by Olivia Nuamah, executive director of Pride Toronto, at an afternoon news conference on Saturday to formally commit the new money. The funding will be used for the creation of a new initiative, run by Pride Toronto, that seeks to address "institutional and systemic barriers that lead to negative outcomes for [LGBT] communities, especially those that they have when encountering the criminal justice system."Nuamah explained that the organization is taking a "two-pronged" approach. First, it will host consultations with LGBT people in cities and towns across the country to hear their concerns and personal experiences with injustice or feeling unsafe.According to a news release, that will be followed by the development of an action plan aimed at:Improving the relationship between Toronto's LGBT communities and the criminal justice system.Increasing understanding of LGBT offending and victimization (including hate crimes).Contributing to the implementation of educational and prevention tools for both victims and offenders in this community."We are incredibly thankful," Nuamah told reporters. While he was never mentioned by name, Morneau made several allusions to alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur. McArthur, 67, faces eight charges of first-degree murder for the deaths of eight men with ties to Toronto's Church and Wellesley neighbourhood.McArthur's arrest in January sent shock waves through the city and exposed deep rifts between its LGBT community and police force. Some within the community have been critical of how police have handled cases of missing LGBT people, some going as far to allege that the community's concerns were ignored by investigators.

Taiwanese reject legalizing same-sex unions in referendum-[Associated Press]-RALPH JENNINGS-yahoonews-November 24, 2018

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Voters in Taiwan passed a referendum asking that marriage be restricted to one man and one woman, a setback to LGBT couples hoping their island will be the first place in Asia to let same-sex couples share child custody and insurance benefits. The vote on Saturday, organized by Christian groups that make up about 5 percent of Taiwan's population and advocates of the traditional Chinese family structure, goes against a May 2017 Constitutional Court ruling. Justices told legislators then to make same-sex marriage legal within two years, a first for Asia where religion and conservative governments normally keep the bans in place.Although the ballot initiative is advisory only, it is expected to frustrate lawmakers mindful of public opinion as they face the court deadline next year. Many legislators will stand for re-election in 2020."The legislature has lots of choices on how to make this court order take effect," said referendum proponent Chen Ke, a Catholic pastor in Taiwan and an opponent of same-sex marriage.Ruling party lawmakers backed by President Tsai Ing-wen had proposed legalizing same-sex marriage in late 2016, but put their ideas aside to await the court hearing.Opposition to same-sex marriage crested after the court ruling. Opponents have held rallies and mobilized votes online.Courts will still consider local marriage licensing offices in violation of the law by May 2019, if they refuse same-sex couples, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson said last week."The referendum is a general survey, it doesn't have very strong legal implications," said Shiau Hong-chi, professor of gender studies and communications management at Shih-Hsin University in Taiwan. "One way or another it has to go back to the court."Voters approved a separate measure Saturday calling for a "different process" to protect same-sex unions. It's viewed as an alternative to using the civil code. A third initiative, also approved, asked that schools avoid teaching LGBT "education."Amnesty International told the government it needs to "deliver equality and dignity.""This result is a bitter blow and a step backwards for human rights in Taiwan," Amnesty's Taiwan-based Acting Director Annie Huang said. "However, despite this setback, we remain confident that love and equality will ultimately prevail."Taiwanese also elected candidates from the China-friendly opposition Nationalist Party to a majority of mayoral and county magistrate posts, reversing the party's losses in 2014.

On Black Friday, more U.S. shoppers chose the computer over the mall-[Reuters]-By Nandita Bose and Melissa Fares-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday kickoff of the U.S. holiday shopping season showed the increasing preference for online purchases, as more Americans opted to stay home and use their smartphones while sales and traffic at brick-and-mortar stores declined. The ongoing shift to online shopping has forced retailers across the country to invest heavily in boosting their e-commerce businesses, and also highlights the impact of early holiday promotions and year-round deals on consumer spending. The weekend also redefined the importance of Black Friday. For the past few years, Black Friday was believed to be waning in importance, but it is now turning into a day when shoppers do not necessarily flock to stores but spend heavily online.Bill Park, a partner at Deloitte & Touche LP, said online sales are starting to complement in-store shopping over the weekend, and for shoppers and retailers the two platforms are starting to converge. This is happening more and more as retailers like Walmart Inc and Amazon.com Inc sell both online and through stores, making winning the transaction more important than where it occurs, retail consultants and analysts said.Online sales rose more than 23 percent, crossing $6 billion on Black Friday, according to data from Adobe Analytics, which tracks transactions at 80 of the top 100 U.S. retailers. On Thanksgiving, it estimated sales grew 28 percent to $3.7 billion.Preliminary data from analytics firm RetailNext showed net sales at brick-and-mortar stores fell 4 to 7 percent over the two days, while traffic fell 5 to 9 percent, continuing the trend of recent years. No data was yet available for actual spending in stores. In 2017, brick-and-mortar sales were down 8.9 percent for the weekend year-over-year, and shopper traffic fell 4.4 percent. In 2016, store sales were down 4.2 percent and traffic was down 4.4 percent, according to RetailNext. The decrease in store foot traffic is a little greater than it has been in years past, though still within expectations, RetailNext spokesperson Ray Hartjen said.Data from retail research firm ShopperTrak also showed that visits to stores fell a combined 1 percent during Thanksgiving and Black Friday compared with the same days in 2017.Brian Field, senior director of advisory services at ShopperTrak, said online sales have eroded traffic from retailers over the years, "but what we have noticed is that the decline is starting to flatten out ... Overall its been consistent with where it's been over the last few years."In 2017, visits to physical stores on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday were down 1.6 percent, according to the firm."This decline feels pretty good to me. I think retail is in for a good season," Field said.Retail consultants have said spending patterns over the weekend are not as indicative of the entire season as they were a few years ago the tendency now is to spread shopping over November and December. The National Retail Federation forecast U.S. holiday retail sales in November and December will increase between 4.3 and 4.8 percent over 2017, for a total of $717.45 billion to $720.89 billion. That compares with an average annual increase of 3.9 percent over the past five years.(Reporting by Nandita Bose and Melissa Fares in New York, Editing by Gary McWilliams and Leslie Adler)

Indian town tense as thousands of Hindus gather near disputed religious site-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Mayank Bhardwaj-November 25, 2018

AYODHYA, India (Reuters) - Amid heavy security, tens of thousands of monks and activists from Hindu nationalist groups began converging on the Indian town of Ayodhya on Sunday to demand the construction of a temple on a disputed religious site.Over 200,000 people are expected near the site where a Hindu mob in 1992 pulled down a 16th-century mosque, sparking deadly religious riots that killed some 2,000 people in one of India's worst communal violence since the partition in 1947.More than 900 extra police and a large number of paramilitary, including elite commandos, have been stationed at Ayodhya, said Vivek Tripathi, spokesman for the Uttar Pradesh police. "We're monitoring the entire town by CCTV and drone cameras," Tripathi said.In the run-up to a general election due by May 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and many Hindu outfits affiliated with the BJP have ratcheted up their demand for a new temple at the disputed site which most Hindus believe was the birthplace of warrior-God Lord Ram.Hindu groups point to evidence there was a temple before a mosque was built by a Muslim ruler in 1528."The mosque was a slight on Hindus and it's a shame that we've failed to build a temple on one of the most holy sites for Hindus," said Sharad Sharma, spokesman for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), or the World Hindu Council, which has close ties with the BJP.Hindus are getting impatient and the time has come to build a grand temple for Lord Ram, Sharma said. The group gathering on Sunday will urge the government to introduce a legislation to pave the way for a temple, said Bablu Khan, an elected BJP council member in Ayodhya. Both Hindu and Muslim groups have petitioned India's Supreme Court to help resolve the issue. The top court has sought more time to give its verdict.Sharma said the delay has disappointed India's majority Hindu community which can not wait endlessly for a verdict. Both the BJP and VHP and their parent movement, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, have asked the government to issue an executive order to build a temple and bypass the Supreme Court. The heavily fortified site, which looks like a small garrison town, is under the control of the Supreme Court.Sunday's congregation in Ayodhya would be followed up with bigger gatherings in New Delhi, India's capital, said Sharma. The build-up of Hindu religious leaders and right wing political activists has also raised questions about the safety of Muslims who live in Ayodhya and other nearby areas.Zafaryab Jilani, a senior member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said it's incumbent upon the state administration to ensure the safety of the community. The administration is geared up to protect every single individual in the town, said Anil Pathak, district chief of Faizabad, where the Ayodhya town is located.(Reporting by Mayank Bhardwaj; Editing by Michael Perry)

Egypt unveils ancient Luxor tomb ‘with very nice paintings’-Site belonging to mummification supervisor Thaw-Irkhet-If contains sarcophagi, statues and some 1,000 funerary figurines, according to authorities-By AFP-TOI-NOV 25,18

LUXOR, Egypt — Egypt on Saturday unveiled an ancient tomb, sarcophagi and funerary artifacts discovered in the Theban necropolis of Al-Assasif in the southern city of Luxor. In a ceremony in front of the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani announced that French and Egyptian archaeologists had discovered “a new tomb… with very nice paintings.”Located between the royal tombs at the Valley of the Queens and the Valley of the Kings, the Al-Assasif necropolis is the burial site of nobles and senior officials close to the pharaohs.Among the finds in the tomb are sarcophagi, statues and some 1,000 funerary figurines called “Ushabtis” made of wood, faience and clay. The tomb dates back to the Middle Kingdom, which spanned the 11th and 12th dynasties, and belonged to “Thaw-Irkhet-If,” mummification supervisor at the Temple of Mut in Karnak, according to the ministry.Separately, archaeologists from the French Institute of Eastern Archaeology and the University of Strasbourg have discovered two sarcophagi dating back to the 18th dynasty, Anani told a news conference. One of the two contains the “well-preserved” mummified remains of a woman named Thuya, the antiquities ministry said in a statement. But ministry spokeswoman Nevine Aref told AFP later that work was still ongoing to definitively identify the name of the mummy.Egyptian authorities regularly announce archaeological discoveries with great fanfare, although the country is often accused of a lack of scientific rigor and neglect of its antiquities.Archaeological sites, particularly in Luxor, make Egypt a major draw for foreign tourists.Hit by the turmoil that enveloped Egypt after the 2011 uprising that ousted longtime president Hosni Mubarak, the tourism sector has picked up this year.

Tech companies and pot producers becoming fast friends-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

Recreational pot has been legal in Canada for just over a month but the pressure on Cannabis producers to improve their yields and profits is already growing. And one factor that will influence their fate is the technology that keeps their plants healthy and improves harvests."Nobody can manage a million square feet by themselves the old way, which is to look, see, smell," says Michael Kadonoff, the founder and CEO of the cannabis technology firm Braingrid."You need bionic eyes. You need more nerve endings."Cannabis is one of the best examples of where Canada's actually leading the world. - Michael Kadonoff, CEO Braingrid-Braingrid's high-tech sensors help growers get that feel for their plants. Encased in white plastic and about the size of a computer tablet, they're strategically positioned inside growing facilities. The system then feeds data — temperature, moisture, pH and more — to the cultivator."The data is online in just a few minutes," says Kadonoff. There are at least 13 cannabis technology companies from Canada trading on North American stock exchanges, serving producers like WeedMD, Viridium, Leaf and Beleave.Braingrid got into the business in 2016. The Toronto-based firm started out in 2012 selling sensors to the solar power industry. "We had to pivot into what we believe is centre stage for Canada. Globally speaking, cannabis is one of the best examples of where Canada's actually leading the world," says Kadonoff, who plans to take the company public by the end of the year. It's going to be a dog-eat-dog market. - Chad Rigby, Cultivation Manager, Beleave -Other companies serve different aspects of the industry. Calgary-based FluroTech tests cannabis samples for potency and chemical composition, watching for pesticides and other contamination. BlockStrain, in Vancouver, has developed a platform that registers and tracks intellectual property in the industry.Another Vancouver company, Cannvas MedTech, has a program that matches people with specific pot products and strains, based on information the user submits about their health and the effect they're seeking. The success of these companies will, naturally, be closely tied to that of their clients; their new best friends. And the clients need that technology because pot is a demanding plant, explains Chad Rigby, the cultivation manager at Beleave in Burlington, Ont. "It doesn't stop growing and you kind of need to work on its schedule and its schedule is 24 hours a day, seven days a week."Beleave is a small operation, but Rigby still had to manage five different strains and multiple rooms packed with plants. The right tech, he says, "makes the grower's life a lot easier."The savings on labour, for example, "frees up growers to do other tasks, like propagating new crops, doing plant maintenance in other rooms," he says. He's convinced technology will play a make-or-break role in the industry."As companies are scaling up, there's going to be a lot of automation and a lot of environmental monitoring coming online," he says."You want to make sure your entire facility is working at a 100 per cent. It's going to be a dog-eat-dog market out there, and the guys who produce the best product are the ones who will be coming out on top."There are 130 licensed cannabis producers in Canada; each striving to improve quality, increase production and reduce cost."The conventional wisdom is that the price of cannabis at wholesale is going down to the $2 per gram range," says Brad Poulos, who teaches a class called the Business of Cannabis at Ryerson University in Toronto. The pressure on producers to grow at that price puts the weed tech companies who help them in an excellent position, one that echoes the past of an iconic Canadian industry."If you go back 100 and some years to the gold rush, the people who made the money were the people who sold the picks and the shovels and the axes and the pans, not so much the people who were scouring for gold," says Poulos. The analogy isn't perfect but Braingrid and other weed tech companies are betting on the idea that serving the needs of pot producers will pay off.  Monitoring plants is one thing, but being part of the industry's pace of growth doesn't leave Kadonoff with much time to reflect."It shows no signs of relenting," he says. "It's hard to keep track of how much is going on."

9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS

REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Rain breaks, easing search for remains of California wildfire-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 25, 2018

(Reuters) - Teams searching for remains from the deadliest wildfire in California history were able to comb through wreckage in dry weather on Saturday, but rains are expected to return next week and officials warned of a threat of mudslides. The so-called Camp Fire all but obliterated the mountain community of Paradise, 175 miles (280 km) northeast of San Francisco, on Nov. 8, killing at least 85 people and destroying nearly 14,000 homes. The death toll was increased late Saturday night by one, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Some 475 people from Paradise and surrounding communities remain unaccounted for, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office.Hundreds of police officers and volunteers have searched in and around Paradise since the fire swept through the area. The 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) of rain that fell there during the last few days turned ash from the thousands of destroyed homes into slurry, complicating the work of finding bodies reduced to bone fragments.Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea has warned that remains of some victims may never be found.Teams resumed their search on Saturday, Butte County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Miranda Bowersox said, ahead of more rains that are expected to start on Wednesday.A total of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) of rain is forecast for areas burned by the Camp Fire from Wednesday through Saturday, said meteorologist David Roth of the federal Weather Prediction Center.Rainfall earlier this week did not trigger any large debris flows, but Roth said the danger of a mudslide will remain far into the future for hillsides that flames have stripped of vegetation. "Any heavy rain event really for the next few to several years would be a problem there," he said.Authorities said they would lift evacuation orders in some areas south of Paradise on Saturday. The city of Paradise was a popular destination for retirees, with people ages 65 or older accounting for a quarter of its 27,000 residents. Most of the victims of the fire identified so far were of retirement age. With help from rainfall, firefighters have contained 98 percent of the blaze, which torched 154,000 acres (62,000 hectares) - an area five times the size of San Francisco, officials said.Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.Thousands of people forced to flee Paradise spent Thanksgiving in warehouses in the nearby city of Chico, or with friends or relatives in nearby towns.(Reporting by Andrew Hay in New Mexico, Alex Dobuzinskis in Los Angeles and Gabriella Borter in New York; Editing by Leslie Adler and Daniel Wallis)
