Israel holds major drill to practice fighting Hamas and Hezbollah simultaneously-Ongoing 10-day exercise by Commando Brigade tackles battling Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in north at the same time, a prospect military fears is liable to occur-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-26 November 2018

The Israeli military’s Commando Brigade launched a large-scale exercise this week to practice fighting the Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip and the Hezbollah terrorist militia in Lebanon simultaneously, the army said Saturday. The drill is continuing into this week.In the past, Israeli defense analysts have speculated that concerns over the prospect of a two-front war prevented the military from launching a major campaign in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire from the coastal enclave. The exercise, and the Israel Defense Forces’ publicity of it, appeared to serve as a message to the two terrorist groups that Israel was prepared for such an eventuality.According to the military, the commando exercise began earlier this week and was expected to last 10 days. Soldiers from the Maglan, Egoz, and Duvdevan units took part in the drill. It included significant cooperation with the Israeli Air Force, which both transported the commandos and carried out airstrikes alongside them.“During the exercise, the brigade practiced fighting between different landscapes and arenas, combat in open fields and urban combat,” the army said. The military said the purpose of the exercise was to improve the commando brigade’s preparedness for war. It was the unit’s sixth brigade-wide exercise since it was created in December 2015.IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot observed the exercise earlier this week.During his visit, the head of the Commando Brigade Col. Kobi Heller told Eisenkot that his unit was “ready and prepared for any scenario in which it is needed and will stand up to any enemy in any arena.”The Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group, which calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, is believed to possess an arsenal of some 10,000 rockets and mortar shells. Israel has fought three wars with the terror group in the past decade, and has repeatedly been on the verge of a fourth over the past eight months as Hamas has led a campaign of border violence and occasional rocket and mortar fire at southern Israel.Earlier this month, the terror group, partnering with the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad, launched some 500 rockets and mortar shells at Israel, killing one person and injuring dozens more.In response, the Israeli military launched strikes against some 160 targets in the Gaza Strip connected to the two terror groups, killing seven people, most of whom were later identified as members of terrorist organizations, including some who were in the process of launching projectiles at Israel at the time they were killed. The battle ended with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire, which has largely held since November 13, but with considerable criticism within Israel, including by former defense minister Avigdor Liberman, who resigned in protest of it, calling it “capitulation to terror.”However, the IDF does not see Hamas as a serious military threat. Rather, the terror group is effectively allowed to remain in power as the Israeli government fears an even more extremist organization could take its place were it to be defeated. The Iran-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist army, however, is considered by the military to be a significant strategic threat. With over 100,000 rockets and missiles in its arsenal, Hezbollah is seen by some defense analysts as more powerful than some Western militaries.Israel fought a 34-day war with the terror group in Lebanon in 2006. Since then, the Lebanese border has been quieter than in the years preceding the conflict. However, Hezbollah has used the time to build up its arsenals considerably, with more precise and dangerous munitions, and has gained considerable experience and training by fighting alongside the Russian and Syrian militaries in the Syrian civil war in support of dictator Bashar Assad.

Ex-defense minister: Current political climate an ‘existential threat’ to Israel-Moshe Ya’alon slams Liberman for handling of flare-up with Gaza and subsequent resignation-By TOI staff-24 November 2018

Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon, a fierce critic of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Saturday that the current political climate was an “existential threat” to the country.Speaking at a cultural event in the Eshkol Regional Council, Ya’alon said, “what is happening right now with the political situation is an existential threat to Israel.”Ya’alon also aim at his successor in the role, Avigdor Liberman, who resigned last week as defense minister over the Gaza ceasefire and pulled his Yisrael Beytenu from the coalition, leaving it with a 61-59 majority in the 120-seat Knesset.“A defense minister resigns because he thought one way and the military thought another way. What do you mean the military thought another way? You are the one responsible,” said Ya’alon, criticizing Liberman’s handling of the recent flare-up with Gaza, which threatened to become a full-blown war, and which sparked the political crisis.“As defense minister, when I brought [plans for] an operation before the security cabinet or when I brought a certain policy before the security cabinet, I initially cleared it. The IDF chief of staff did not bring it before the government, I did. He explained, but I was before the government,” he said.Ya’alon accused Liberman of failed political maneuvers and posturing, saying the Yisrael Beytenu head quit because he “discovered that his slogans to effectively take out Hamas have no backing.”He said recent events have caused “chaos,” and a breakdown of ties between the political and military echelons.Ya’alon was ousted by Netanyahu as defense minister in May 2016 and replaced with Liberman. He quit the ruling Likud party and the Israeli parliament shortly thereafter. He has since frequently criticized Netanyahu and indicated he would return to politics to run against him.The current political crisis began after an undercover Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip on November 11 went awry, leading to exchanges of fire in which an Israeli special forces officer and seven Hamas gunmen were killed. The incident led to two days of intense cross-border fighting. Gaza’s Hamas rulers fired hundreds of rockets at southern Israel, while Israeli warplanes targeted scores of Hamas military sites in Gaza. After two days, Egypt brokered an informal truce between Israel and Hamas. Though Netanyahu averted a war, he drew blistering criticism from both the right and left for his decision to accept the terms of the agreement after the unprecedentedly intense barrage on Israel’s south.Liberman resigned in protest, accusing Netanyahu of capitulating to terrorism.Following the resignation, Israel appeared to be headed for early elections well ahead of November 2019, when the current government’s term is set to end, but Netanyahu appears to be holding steady. Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party, made a failed bid for the defense portfolio, and calls for a snap vote have since dissipated.Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon of the Kulanu party, who also advocated early elections, revealed last week that the Israeli government knew the truce with Hamas would not be a popular decision, but that security chiefs were unanimous in their recommendations that this was the right course of action.Kahlon said the decision “came from a sense of great responsibility,” but “we knew it would be unpopular.”Kahlon dismissed criticism leveled by Liberman and others that Israel “surrendered” to Hamas, saying the truce was “not a win” for the terror group and came after hours of deliberations in the security cabinet. He explained that the decision to agree to a truce was “measured” even as he understood the anger expressed by residents of the south who were under rocket fire.According to the military, over 460 rockets and mortar shells were fired at southern Israel over the course of two days almost two weeks ago — more than twice the rate at which they were launched during the 2014 war and the largest-ever number of projectiles fired in one day. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted over 100 of them. Most of the rest landed in open fields, but dozens landed inside southern Israeli cities and towns, killing a Palestinian man in Ashkelon, injuring dozens and causing significant property damage.

With child coming, it's off to the suburbs for Harry, Meghan-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 26, 2018

LONDON — Like many a couple before them, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are moving to the suburbs ahead of the anticipated birth of their first child.Officials said Saturday that Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, will move from Kensington Palace in central London to Frogmore Cottage, a house on the grounds of Windsor Castle, early next year. The couple, who married in a chapel on the Windsor Castle grounds in May, is expecting their first child in the spring. Windsor is about 20 miles (32 kilometres ) west of central London. The palace statement said that "Windsor is a very special place for their royal highnesses and they are grateful that their official residence will be on the estate."Windsor Castle is also one of Queen Elizabeth II's favourite homes. It is surrounded by horse country where she used to ride frequently in her younger days, and she is known to prefer the castle and its environs to Buckingham Palace, her more formal official residence in central London.Harry and Meghan have been living at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace since announcing their engagement last year. They will keep their office at Kensington Palace, which is also home to Prince William and his wife Kate. The move means that William and Harry will no longer be living in close proximity to each other now that Harry is starting his own family.Gregory Katz, The Associated Press.

Controversial Plan To Pay For Universal Basic Income Unveiled-By MICHAEL FORER 26 November, 2018

Officials have unveiled a new proposal that will help fund plans to implement universal basic income across the country. As more and more jobs are threatened by robots, officials have come up with a plan to eventually introduce universal basic income - which is basically a minimum salary that will be paid to all it's citizens. Though it seems like a great idea, it will be expensive. How expensive? At least $43 billion. To pay for it, early this week it was announced that online casinos would be permitted to operate. It's expected that tax revenues collected from these online casinos and those from marijuana will be enough to pay for its plans to implement universal basic income."We have decided to permit online gambling and allow a few licensed and regulated casinos who have been determined to be legitimate and real. The taxation structure will be similar to how existing lottery systems operate, except this will be on a bigger level. When questioned as to what would happen with tax revenues in the meantime, they said "these tax revenues will go towards funding various pension plans, and later, these two will be replaced with a universal income system."After the announcement was made, it was said that only a few online casinos are permitted to operate in the country, with Grand Mondial receiving the first license "because they helped draft legislation, and have been reviewed and examined to be fully compliant and legitimate."Official: "This will help so many people for years to come."When an online casino or any type of new industry enters a country, they sometimes offer promotions and bonuses to attract players to get their name out. As expected, Grand Mondial is offering limited-time bonuses, promotions, and has adjusted payout odds to heavily be in the players favor. Simply put, playing now will almost certainly guarantee winnings and big payouts. From a business standpoint it may not make sense that they are just giving away money, but for Grand Mondial, since they are the only ones for the time being, it will allow them to develop a reputation for being a good casino right from the start. Over time the payout odds will be adjusted, but for now, you would be crazy not to play, as it is impossible to lose.To prove it, CBC's Michael Forer tested Grand Mondial's offer after the press conference. Signing up was simple, and he deposited $20, and was already winning as he got $20 right away, just for signing up. He also got 120 free spins, after 32 spins, he won $4,000. David later withdrew his winnings which was easy as signing up was, and had $4,000 right into his bank account the next day.Michael Forer from CBC News tested and proved that the offer is worthwhile. You don't have to be lucky to win, take advantage of the boosted payouts, free cash bonuses, and guaranteed winnings! Follow the steps below to grab a few thousands dollar from Grand Mondial Casino now. Hurry, the offer is limited and the promotion of free bonus ends on 26 November, 2018, 2018 !

Syrian state TV: 41 injured in rebel poison gas attack on Aleppo-Regime station interviews doctor who says two victims are in critical condition, including a child-By Albert Aji-26 November 2018-TOI

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — At least 41 civilians were being treated Saturday following a suspected poison gas attack by Syrian rebel groups on the government-held Aleppo city in the country’s north, according to Syrian state media.Syrian state TV previously said that 21 people had been injured, but people continued to arrive at a hospital in Aleppo where state TV was airing live.Doctors told state TV that most of those admitted to hospitals suffered from breathing problems and blurred vision. One doctor said two were in critical condition, including a child. State TV showed footage of medical professionals treating men and women on hospital beds.Rami Abdurrahman, the head of Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said there was a stench of gas in Aleppo city after projectiles were fired.Aleppo police chief Essam al-Shali told state TV the projectiles landed in the al-Khalidiya neighborhood and wind conditions caused gas to spread. State TV later said the gas affected two other areas in the city. There are no deaths, al-Shali said.Aleppo Gov. Hussein Diab visited the injured at the hospital. He told state TV that a total of 41 people had been admitted and accused rebels of using poisonous gas in the missiles they lobbed at the Aleppo neighborhood. An unnamed doctor told the same outlet that a poisonous gas was believed to have been used, but tests were needed to determine what kind.Earlier, state media said it was believed to be chlorine. One patient said a foul smell filled the air after projectiles were lobbed.“There are often missiles on the city but this is the first time we smelled such a smell,” the patient said without giving his name.Aleppo has come under rebel attack in recent weeks, with missiles falling inside the city. The government has responded with counter attacks on rebel-held areas in the Aleppo countryside. In the absence of independent monitors, it is difficult to corroborate gas attacks. But both sides of the conflict have accused each other throughout the war of using poison gas.A joint team from the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons accused Syria’s government of using chlorine gas in at least two attacks in 2014 and 2015, and the nerve agent sarin in an attack in April 2017 in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed about 100 people. The U.S. launched a series of strikes on Syrian government sites in retaliation for the attack in Khan Sheikhoun. The UN-OPCW team also accused the Islamic State extremist group of using mustard gas twice in 2015 and 2016.The government accused rebels of using gas in a 2013 attack on Khan al-Assal, a village southwest of Aleppo city, that killed 25 people.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Rain complicates grim task of finding remains of California wildfire-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 23, 2018

(Reuters) - Steady rain in northern California doused the state's most deadly wildfire on Friday, but it turned ash from thousands of destroyed homes into slurry, complicating work to find bodies reduced to bone fragments. The so-called Camp Fire virtually obliterated the city of Paradise, located 175 miles (280 km) northeast of San Francisco, on Nov. 8, killing at least 84 people and destroying nearly 14,000 homes.Over 600 people from Paradise and surrounding communities remained unaccounted for, according to a list provided by the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Drone footage https://buttecountyrecovers.org/Maps provided by the town of Paradise to help residents see if their homes survived showed how fire leapt from house to house in the mountain community of 27,000.Darrel Wilken, 51, a nurse at the town's partially destroyed hospital, said emergency workers told him they were having difficulty collecting human remains after 3 inches of rain turned the ash of burned home sites into slurry."The remains, some of them are just going to wash away, because they are just ash," said Wilken, who fled the blaze with three patients in his car. "It's grim to think of, but they may never find a large portion of the people missing."A further 1 to 3 inches (2.5-7.5 cm) of rain is expected to fall between Friday and Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) said."Flash floods and debris flows will be a particular threat in the wildfire burn areas," the NWS said in a notice warning of the risk of flash floods through late Friday afternoon.Paradise was a popular destination for retirees, and two-thirds of the victims named so far were aged over 65.Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea has warned that remains of victims may be "very small bone fragments," and some may never be found.Firefighting teams had contained 95 percent of the blaze, which torched 154,000 acres - an area five times the size of San Francisco, said Andrew Freeborn, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection."The precipitation is a positive," said Freeborn, adding that specialists were monitoring for flash floods or mudslides that could endanger firefighters.Thousands of people forced to flee Paradise spent Thanksgiving in warehouses in the nearby city of Chico, or with friends or relatives in nearby towns.Wilken visited his children for the first time since he called them the day of the fire and told them he thought he was going to die. He credits his survival to sweeping burning pine needles off the hood of his car as other vehicles caught fire."I'm emotionally traumatized by what happened," said Wilken, who keeps in close contact with co-workers, some of whom lost family, to help work on his grief.(Reporting by Andrew Hay in New Mexico; Editing by Leslie Adler)

French protesters angry over fuel taxes clash with police-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-Thomas Adamson, Associated Press-November 26, 2018

PARIS (AP) -- French police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse violent demonstrators in Paris on Saturday, as thousands gathered in the capital and beyond and staged road blockades to vent anger against rising fuel taxes.Thousands of police were deployed nationwide to contain the eighth day of deadly demonstrations that started as protests against tax but morphed into a rebuke of President Emmanuel Macron and the perceived elitism of France's ruling class. Two people have been killed since Nov. 17 in protest-related tragedies.Tense clashes on the Champs-Elysees that ended by dusk Saturday saw police face off with demonstrators who burned plywood, wielded placards reading "Death to Taxes" and upturned a large vehicle. At least 19 people, including four police officers, were slightly hurt and one person had more serious injuries in the day of unrest in Paris, according to police.Macron responded in a strongly worded tweet: "Shame on those who attacked (police). Shame on those who were violent against other citizens ... No place for this violence in the Republic."Police said that dozens of protesters were detained for "throwing projectiles," among other acts. By nightfall the Champs-Elysees was smoldering and in the Place de la Madeleine, burned scooters lay on the sidewalk like blackened shells."It's going to trigger a civil war and me, like most other citizens, we're all ready," said Benjamin Vrignaud, a 21-year-old protester from Chartres."They take everything from us. They steal everything from us," said 21-year-old Laura Cordonnier. The famed avenue was speckled with plumes of smoke and neon — owing to the color of the vests the self-styled "yellow jacket" protesters don. French drivers are required to keep neon security vests in their vehicles.Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said that 8,000 protesters flooded the Champs-Elysees at the demonstration's peak and there were nearly 106,000 protesters and 130 arrests in total nationwide.Castaner denounced protesters from the far-right whom he called "rebellious," as he accused National Assembly leader Marine Le Pen of encouraging them. But the Interior Ministry played down the scale of Saturday's demonstrations by highlighting that up to 280,000 people took part in last Saturday's protest. The unrest is proving a major challenge for embattled Macron, who's suffering in the polls. The leader, who swept to power only last year, is the focus of rage for the "yellow jacket" demonstrators who accuse the pro-business centrist of elitism and indifference to the struggles of ordinary French.Macron has so far held strong and insisted the fuel tax rises are a necessary pain to reduce France's dependence on fossil fuels and fund renewable energy investments — a cornerstone of his reforms of the nation. He will defend fresh plans to make the "energy transition" easier next week.Paris deployed some 3,000 security forces on Saturday, notably around tourist-frequented areas, after an unauthorized attempt last week to march on the presidential Elysee Palace.Police officials said that a no-go zone, set up around key areas including the presidential palace and the National Assembly on the Left Bank of the Seine River, has not been breached. But authorities are struggling because the movement has no clear leader and has attracted a motley group of people with broadly varying demands. The anger is mainly over a hike in the diesel fuel tax, which has gone up seven euro cents per liter (nearly 30 U.S. cents per gallon) and will keep climbing in coming years, according to Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne. The tax on gasoline is also to increase four euro cents. Gasoline currently costs about 1.64 euros a liter in Paris ($7.06 a gallon), slightly more than diesel.Far left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon explained to BFMTV the historical importance of this issue in the Gallic mindset: "When tax is no longer agreed to, it's the start of revolutions in France."___Chris Den Hond and Patrick Hermensen contributed to this report.

Turkey uneasy about U.S. plan for observation posts on Syria border: minister-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 26, 2018

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey is uneasy about U.S. plans to set up "observation posts" in Syria along parts of its border with Turkey, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Saturday.Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday the United States was setting up the posts to help keep the focus on clearing the final Islamic State militant strongholds in Syria. The United States has long complained that tension between Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - which includes the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia - has at times slowed progress on the fight against Islamic State.Akar said he told U.S. Chief of Staff Joseph Dunford and other U.S. officials during a recent visit to Canada that setting up the posts would have a very negative impact on perceptions of the United States in Turkey."During our talks with both political and civilian interlocutors we repeatedly expressed our unease in various ways," he said. "I think actions like this will make the complicated situation in the region even more complicated".Turkey is angry at U.S. support for the YPG, which it views as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) waging a decades-long insurgency on Turkish soil. The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union."Nobody should doubt that the Turkish Armed forces and the Republic of Turkey will take the necessary steps against all kinds of risks and threats from across its borders," he said."We expect our U.S. allies to immediately cut their ties with the terrorist YPG, who are not in the slightest bit different from the PKK," Akar added.Islamic State is still present in eastern Syria in a pocket east of the Euphrates River near the border with Iraq.President Donald Trump's administration hopes that the U.S.-backed fight against Islamic State in its last foothold in northeastern Syria will end within months. But a top U.S. diplomat recently said American forces will remain to ensure the "enduring defeat" of the militant group.(Reporting by Daren Butler; Editing by Hugh Lawson)
