Majority of Ontarians support legalized pot, but say LCBO not the right way to sell it-[The Daily Buzz]-May 3, 2016-YAHOONEWS
The federal government’s plan to legalize marijuana is a move the majority of Ontarians can get behind, a new poll says.Forum Research found that 56 per cent of Ontario voters surveyed approve of the promise made by the Trudeau government to legalize the drug. That’s a clear majority over the 36 per cent found to be opposed to legalization, while a remaining seven per cent were found to have no opinion on the matter. What’s more is that nearly a quarter of those asked said they will use marijuana in the next year if it were legalized. While the government has announced it will introduce legalization legislation in the spring of 2017, exactly where Ontario residents will be able to purchase cannabis is still remains to be seen.Only 38 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of marijuana being sold through Ontario’s provincial alcohol retailer the LCBO, where Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne would like to see marijuana distributed. Just over half of respondents said they would like to see marijuana sold in specialized dispensaries or at drug stores. The LCBO option has been argued by some as already having a secure distribution network, and also being better equipped at preventing underage Canadian’s from accessing pot, reports The National Post. But while government officials try to figure out how Canadians can access marijuana, pot shops operating in a legal grey zone are surfacing all across Canada. In response, city officials and police in both Vancouver and Toronto have vowed to start cracking down on the budding businesses in an effort to bring some order to the current system. The poll, which was conducted on April 25, surveyed 1,157 randomly selected Ontarians over the age of 18 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Ambrose says she'll vote against assisted dying bill unless amended-[The Canadian Press]-May 4, 2016-YAHOONEWS
OTTAWA - Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose says unless there are amendments, she'll be voting against federal legislation aimed at allowing people to seek medical help to end their lives.Ambrose says she's thought a lot about the bill and says she wants to see stronger safeguards for the disabled community. She says issues like mental health aren't addressed well enough and she's waiting to see if those and other provisions are strengthened by the time the bill gets to the final stage. But while Ambrose says she's opposed to the legislation as written, that doesn't bind other members of the Conservative caucus who will be allowed to vote their conscience.Quebec Tory MP Denis Lebel says he's in support of the proposed law, noting that his province already has existing legislation on the books. The House of Commons and Senate are currently studying the legislation with an eye towards making it the law of the land by June 6 — the date the Supreme Court set after it struck down the existing ban on doctor-assisted death.Ambrose says the government appears open to amendments, which is why she's not firmly closing the door on eventually voting in favour of the bill."I think they are being constructive and collaborative," Ambrose said."Many of our MPs and potentially some from other parties will bring forward amendments and then I will reconsider at third reading."
French TTIP complaints reflect growing EU anxiety By Aleksandra Eriksson-MAY 4,16-EUOBSERVER
BRUSSELS, Today, 09:26-French president Francois Hollande has given a damning verdict on the progress of free-trade negotiations with the US, reflecting a growing frustration among European politicians with American tactics.Hollande said on Tuesday (3 May) that France simply could not accept the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in its current shape.”We do not support free trade without rules,” he told a conference celebrating the history of the French left.It was the first time a head of state had spoken so clearly against the agreement, and it showed how difficult the negotiations have become.Hours earlier, Hollande's trade minister Matthias Fekl said it was ”most likely” that the negotiations would stop.Their statements, coming after the 13th round of negotiations last week, reflect widespread disappointment over a lack of progress, which Europeans attribute to growing American protectionism. In the past, Hollande had called for a quick deal on TTIP. But lately he has bemoaned a lack of progress on agriculture and culture, two sectors France feels very strongly about.Fekl also fretted over environmental concerns.“It would make no sense to have completed [the international climate conference] in December in Paris, this great agreement for the environment, only to sign an agreement to unravel it all a few months later,” he told Le Monde.Bernd Lange, the European parliament’s main TTIP negotiator, said the US had refused to budge over workers' rights or public procurement."That’s no basis for negotiations," he told Deutschlandradio Kultur on Tuesday.”Internally we’ve said we’re going to give it a chance until July, but I can’t imagine the US will have a big change of heart. I’m expecting this won’t work out."-A little stressed'-Scepticism also came from Sweden, one of the most TTIP-friendly European states.Sweden’s enterprise minister Mikael Damberg told Europaportalen that seven of 13 chapters remained open after the last round of negotiations, which made him feel ”a little stressed”.”We must accelerate the pace of negotiations," he said."Europe has come further with showing its positions while the Americans haven’t really shown their cards yet.”He said the conduct of negotiations worried him more than the public resistance to TTIP.According to the schedule, negotiations should finish during Barack Obama’s presidency. All the participating countries have the right to veto an agreement. The European Commission said TTIP would be high on the trade council agenda scheduled for next week."The commission is aware of the positions and concerns of member states since we consult with them on a regular basis," a commission source told the EUobserver.

More staff going to help process Syria refugees, military may help: McCallum-[The Canadian Press]-May 4, 2016-YAHOONEWS
OTTAWA - Immigration Minister John McCallum says talks are underway with the military about again helping with efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Canada. He says it's part of the effort to meet a promise to private sponsors to get thousands of Syrians here by the end of this year or early next.McCallum says additional staff will head overseas this month to speed the processing of applications. The military assisted in the effort to bring 25,000 Syrians to Canada by the end of February by conducting security screening overseas and also prepared bases here for temporary housing, though they were never used.Hundreds of sponsorship groups were frustrated when the Liberals packed up that massive settlement effort at the end of February and returned refugee processing to its prior slow pace.Pressure they placed on the government saw the Liberals pledge to process all applications received by the end of March in an effort to bring in about 10,000 people.
The Latest: Detective seeks records on Prince airport stop-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-May 3, 2016-YAHOONEWS
CHANHASSEN, Minn. - The Latest on the investigation into Prince's death (all times local):5:55 p.m.Detectives in Minnesota have asked authorities in Moline, Illinois, for fire and ambulance records related to the emergency landing of a plane carrying Prince less than a week before he died.Carver County Sheriff's Detective Chris Nelson made the request of the city clerk in an April 28 email. Nelson also asked a detective for the name of the hospital that treated Prince.A law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation into Prince's death says investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose. That official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media, also said investigators were also looking into whether Prince overdosed on the plane in Moline. The Associated Press obtained the emails through a public records request. It wasn't clear Tuesday whether Moline had fulfilled the request.___3:40 p.m.Authorities and emergency responders were called to Prince's suburban Minneapolis home over the last five years for everything from mundane reports of tripped fire alarms to more serious medical calls.Minnesota authorities on Tuesday released a log with information on more than 40 calls for service involving Prince's Paisely Park complex. In one 2011 call, a woman in Germany claimed Prince told her a year earlier that he had an uncontrollable cocaine habit. Authorities didn't follow up because the information was old and the woman didn't say Prince was in immediate danger. The woman's identifying information was redacted. It's not clear whether she actually knew Prince.A message seeking comment from Prince's representative wasn't immediately returned. Several people who knew Prince have said they never saw him use drugs.Prince died April 21.
John Kasich suspends presidential campaign: Reports-[Michael Walsh]-May 4, 2016-YAHOONEWS
Republican presidential candidate John Kasich has ended his bid for the White House, several media outlets confirmed on Wednesday. His pulling out of the race effectively allows longtime frontrunner Donald Trump to become the likely nominee for the GOP.Kasich abruptly canceled a planned press conference in Virginia Wednesday morning, sparking speculation that he was calling it quits.NBC News, CNN and the Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Kasich campaign sources revealed that the Ohio governor would suspend his campaign.Tuesday evening, the Kasich campaign appeared to be moving forward. After a disappointing finish in the Indiana primary, the Kasich campaign released a memo saying that the night’s results would not change his plans to keep pushing forward.“Our strategy has been and continues to be one that involves winning the nomination at an open convention,” the memo reads in part. This apparent commitment to stay in the race seemed reinforced by a Twitter post parodying the “Star Wars” opening crawl. It argued that he would have a better chance than Trump of beating likely Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the general election.Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus appeared to accept Trump as the inevitable face of the GOP race in a tweet Tuesday night after the real estate magnate’s win in Indiana.Calling Trump the “presumptive nominee,” Priebus tweeted, “We all need to unite and focus on defeating Hillary Clinton.”In an interview Wednesday with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota, Priebus returned to the unity message. “We’ve got a candidate that is winning in every single state. I mean, a week earlier, I don’t think he had lost a county in six states,” he said of Trump. “So I mean, look, it’s time to unite.”But he stopped short of saying Kasich should drop out when Camerota asked if that would help unify the party.“You know, obviously, that’s up to John Kasich,” he said. “He’s got his own — his own platform and his own agenda that he’s running, and I’m going to leave that up to him.”Texas Sen. Ted Cruz suspended his campaign Tuesday night after the Indiana primary results rolled in. Early on, Cruz resisted publicly attacking Trump in the hope that his supporters would join him after the Trump media frenzy waned. But, as Trump continued to dominate the primaries and as the field of candidates thinned, Cruz went after the frontrunner, receiving the nickname “Lyin’ Ted” from the master-brander in the process.Kasich had been a long-shot candidate ever since the first Republican presidential debates last summer. The stage was already overcrowded with establishment favorites and political outsiders. As the election dragged on, it became clear that his campaign had more or less turned into a spoiler aimed at preventing Trump from getting the requisite 1,237 delegates to clinch the party’s nod without a contested convention. He was scheduled to speak in Virginia at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday but never appeared. His run for the Oval Office will come to a close with only one state primary win: his home state of Ohio.
Priebus, Trump Surprised Cruz Quit-NEWSMAX-By Bill Hoffmann | Wednesday, 04 May 2016 10:28 AM
Ted Cruz's decision to throw in the towel Tuesday night came as a big surprise to both Donald Trump and Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus."He was a very tough competitor. I said that last night. I was surprised he left, actually," Trump said during a Wednesday phone interview with Fox News's "Fox & Friends.""He did the right thing for himself, his family and the party."And, extending an olive branch, Trump said of his "Lyin' Ted" nickname for the Texas senator, "We will now put that aside."Priebus, appearing on CNN's "New Day" program, said he also didn't expect Cruz to call it a day in the race for the GOP presidential nomination."I was surprised, and that's a hard thing to do," Priebus said. "He ran a very, very serious operation, just an incredible ground game, his delegate operation was just unbelievable, and I was surprised."
Trump, last man standing in Republican White House race, now has to unify party-[Reuters]-By Steve Holland-May 4, 2016-YAHOONEWS
WASHINGTON, Reuters - Donald Trump became the last man standing in the race for the Republican U.S. presidential nomination on Wednesday as one after the other his sole remaining rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, faded out of the picture.Anointed the presumptive nominee after winning Indiana on Tuesday, the 69-year-old New York billionaire turned to a new phase in his campaign, planning to set up a vice presidential selection committee and stepping up efforts to seek unity with more Republicans. But the wounds from a brutal primary battle were still raw among many Republican loyalists who simply cannot bear to support Trump because they worry he could spell disaster for the party in the Nov. 8 elections.Kasich, the Ohio governor who stayed in the race in hopes of persuading Republicans to choose him as the nominee at a contested convention in July, made plans to get out of the race now that a contested convention has been averted.News reports said Kasich would suspend his campaign, making it official in Columbus, Ohio, at 5 p.m. EDT.Trump has overcome sustained opposition from Republican rivals by using his star power to give voice to an anti-establishment movement. His supporters have been wildly enthusiastic about his "America First" platform, which has strayed far from some conservative bulwarks like free trade and military interventionism.Trump's immediate challenge is to mend deep fissures within the Republican Party, easing tensions with party loyalists who have been appalled by his bombastic, bullying style, his denigrating comments about women and his proposals to build a wall on the border with Mexico and deport 11 million illegal immigrants. In a series of Wednesday morning television interviews, Trump made clear he would not be looking to placate everyone after a tumultuous primary campaign in which many establishment Republicans rejected him and spawned Stop Trump and Never Trump movements."I am confident that I can unite much of it, some of it I don't want," Trump said on NBC's "Today" show. "Honestly, there are some people I really don't want. People will be voting for me. They're not voting for the party."Trump believes more Republicans will support him when they consider the possibility of Hillary Clinton, favorite to be the Democratic nominee, being elected president, Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said."They're going to come around," she said on MSNBC.The New York Times quoted Trump as saying he would soon form a team to help him in the search for a vice presidential nominee to be announced in July. He put retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson on the committee. Carson endorsed Trump after pulling out of Republican race earlier this year.Trump, a former reality television star who has never held public office and who has honed an 'outsider' image, suggested he might make a more conventional choice as his running mate.“I’m more inclined to go with a political person,” Trump told the Times. “I have business very much covered.”Trump's win in Indiana cleared the way him to prepare for a likely match-up in the November general election against former Secretary of State Clinton. She lost the Indiana primary to her tenacious challenger, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, but remains on course to become her party's nominee.-'UNITE AND FOCUS'-Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called Trump the party's presumptive nominee in a tweet on Tuesday night and said, "We all need to unite and focus" on defeating Clinton. In an interview Wednesday, Priebus acknowledged achieving Republican unity would be difficult. "It's going to take some time but we're going to get there," he said on CNN.Republican Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska made clear she would support the nominee but is not comfortable with Trump, in an interview with Nebraska Radio Network."Mr. Trump is going to have to work hard to bring the party together,” she said. “He’s going to have to work hard to explain his stance on different issues and to talk about the principles and values he holds. I look forward to having a robust race here.”Support for Trump among Republicans nationally jumped in recent weeks to the highest level of the primary campaign, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. A recent poll found Trump with the support of 53 percent of Republican participants, well above Cruz at 25 percent. Kasich had 16 percent. In a potential general election match-up, however, Clinton led Trump by about 10 percentage points among likely voters. The poll included 623 Democrats and 556 Republicans and had a credibility interval of 5 percentage points.Clinton called Trump a 'loose cannon' on Wednesday and said America should not take a risk on an unreliable candidate.Since launching his White House bid last summer as a longshot amid a crowded field that included governors, former governors and U.S. senators, Trump repeatedly defied predictions that his campaign would implode. He prevailed over rivals he derided as "grown politicians," despite making provocative statements along the way that drew sometimes furious criticism from many in the party but fed his anti-establishment appeal.(Additional reporting by Susan Cornwell, Megan Casella, Susan Heavey, Doina Chiacu and Emily Stephenson in Washington, and Chris Kahn in New York; Writing by Doina Chiacu and Steve Holland; Editing by Frances Kerry)
