Iran urges nuclear weapon-free Korean peninsula-In meeting with South Korean counterpart, Rouhani says ‘our demand is a world free of weapons of mass destruction’-By AP May 2, 2016, 6:08 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
TEHRAN — Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Monday pushed for a Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons, the official IRNA news agency reported.Rouhani met with visiting South Korean President Park Geun-hye and said Iran seeks a world free of weapons of mass destruction, “especially nuclear” weapons.“Our demand is a world free of weapons of mass destruction, especially freeing the Korean peninsula and the Middle East from destructive weapons,” he said.Park said she has asked for Iran’s help in implementing UN Security Council resolutions calling for the nuclear disarmament of the Korean peninsula. The remarks were aimed at North Korea, which has been hit with tough UN sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. North Korea has conducted four nuclear bomb tests and tested a long-range rocket earlier this year.Park arrived in Tehran on Sunday for the first visit by a South Korean president to Iran since 1962.Rouhani said both sides agreed to increase their bilateral trade from the current $6 billion per year to $18 billion in the coming years. They also signed a number of agreements in the fields of oil and gas, railroads, tourism, and technology, and agreed to re-establish direct flights between Tehran and Seoul.Iran has been seeking to reintegrate into the global economic system since nuclear-related sanctions were lifted in January under a landmark deal with world powers.Energy-hungry South Korea, the world’s fifth largest importer of crude oil, used to be one of the biggest buyers of Iranian oil before the sanctions were imposed.Iran said it has raised its oil and gas condensate exports to South Korea to 400,000 barrels per day, a fourfold increase since the nuclear deal was implemented.South Korea and Iran established diplomatic ties in 1962 but their heads of states have never held bi-lateral talks.
As Obama exits stage, is he using Peres’s script?-US president’s new YouTube film on him mulling how to spend post White House life is funny, owes more than a little to his former Israeli counterpart-By James Inverne May 2, 2016, 5:18 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
It has been frequently remarked in the entertainment industry over the last few years that Israeli culture is “in.” From the living room to the kitchen, Israelis have been plundered for their television shows, their music and their cooking. Now, even President Barack Obama himself may be getting in on the Israeli mimicking trend. No, not Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or his policies, which the White House has been clear to distance itself from. But rather it seems Obama is looking at Shimon Peres for inspiration as he looks to join the elder Israeli statesman in post-presidential life.Social media feeds are palpably shaking at the chortling of Obama fans, happily linking to a video just released online by the White House, in which Obama despondently tries to decide what on earth he will do with his life after the presidency. He applies for jobs, asks for advice, and allows himself to look more-than-a-little ridiculous. The film debuted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and, at the time of writing, it already had several hundred thousand views across various YouTube channels.-Sound familiar?-It does, doesn’t it? Because what Fox Television Studios did to “Hatufim” (the Israeli TV series that would become “Homeland”), President Obama has just done to that charming video (circa 700,000 views) that Shimon Peres’s grand-daughter made as he, himself, was leaving office two years ago.Remember how it goes? Peres is sitting in his presidential office, bored, starting to pack up. He plays solitaire on his computer and hurriedly switches his screen when there’s a danger anyone will see, and then he tries out a procession of rather-less-exciting new jobs — checkout clerk in a supermarket, gas station attendant, pizza delivery guy. He goes to an employment center, where the lady is decidedly unimpressed by his story. Now watch the Obama film, entitled “Couch Commander.” He lies on a sofa, asking Joe Biden what on earth he should do. Try sports, suggests the vice president. So Obama phones a sports team. They hang up on him. He goes to see someone about getting a driving license who (not unlike — not at all unlike — Peres’s scornful job-center person) rolls her eyes. There the stories diverge, with a little (and slightly misconceived) Snapchat gag, and a hastily arranged consultation with a former rival. Is it honestly possible that Obama (or one of his advisers) never saw the Peres film? It seems unlikely. And if that were the case, then this would be one heck of a coincidence. And presidents aren’t supposed to believe in coincidences. After this, the Jerry Seinfeld interview, “Funny Or Die” and some other laughfests, it sometimes seems as though Obama’s principle legacy play is to be remembered as comedian-in-chief. And to be fair to him, he’s pretty good at it. I just hope he considers giving one S. Peres a screen credit. I’m not sure what that guy’s doing now.
Teen seriously hurt in Jerusalem bus bombing awakens-Eden Dadon, 16, who suffered severe burns all over her body, responds to stimuli following two weeks in induced coma-By Times of Israel staff May 2, 2016, 7:58 pm
A 16-year-old girl seriously injured in a bus bombing last month in Jerusalem came to on Monday for the first time since the terror attack.Eden Dadon was on life support for nearly two weeks at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem after suffering serious burns all over her body in the blast.Another 19 others were injured and the bomber, Palestinian Abed al-Hamid Abu Srour, 19, was killed in the No. 12 bus bombing.Doctors on Sunday began scaling back medication keeping her anesthetized and shortly thereafter she came out of her medically induced coma and responded to stimuli. Her face was all black, you couldn’t see her.”The bus exploded as it was passing near the Talpiot neighborhood in the southern end of the capital carrying a number of passengers at around 5:45 p.m., police said. The blast set a car and a second empty bus on fire, injuring several more people.Jerusalem police chief Yoram Halevy told media the blast was caused by an explosive device placed on the bus.Terror groups Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad “welcomed” the bombing as did the Popular Resistance Committees, but did not claim responsibility.
Third UK Labour official in day suspended for anti-Israel remarks-Israel Labor Party head says weighing suspending ties with British counterpart over anti-Semitic sentiments of ‘small and loud minority’-By Agencies and Times of Israel staff May 2, 2016, 8:11 pm
A third low-level UK Labour Party politician was suspended Monday pending investigation into anti-Israel tweets he made in 2014.Earlier in the day two city councilors were suspended over anti-Israel remarks as an anti-Semitism scandal wracks the British political party.Burnley Labour councilor Shah Hussain told the Guido Fawkes website, which has uncovered several instances of anti-Israel comments by Labour officials amid a scandal roiling the party, that he wasn’t “formally informed” of his suspension, but had been touch with party officials.“Councillor Shah Hussain has been suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome of an investigation,” the party said in a statement. The tweets in question, made by Hussain in July 2014 during Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, were directed at Israeli soccer player Yossi Benayoun.Hussain called Benayoun, who played soccer in the UK, a “complete and utter plonker” and said he and Israel were “doing the same thing that hitler [sic] did to ur race in ww2.” You are an complete and utter plonker, you and your country doing the same thing that hitler did to ur race in ww2 @YossiBenayoun15 — Shah Hussain (@shahjee72) July 26, 2014-“Yossi ur an idiot, looks like hartson didn’t kick u hard enough in the head, joey top man!! #FreePalestine,” Hussain said in a second tweet.Hussain’s remark was actually incorrect: John Hartson kicked Israeli soccer player Eyal Berkovic in the head in 1998.@YossiBenayoun15 @Joey7Barton yossi ur an idiot, looks like hartson didn't kick u hard enough in the head, joey top man!! #FreePalestine— Shah Hussain (@shahjee72) July 26, 2014-Israeli Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog condemned the UK Labour Party members’ comments that came to light in the past week, saying he was “weighing suspending ties and it would appear that there won’t be any other choice, despite the fact that it’s clear that most party members are friends of Israel and that these statements represent just a small and loud minority within it.”Earlier on Monday the Labour Party said that Nottingham City councilor Ilyas Aziz has been suspended pending an investigation and that Salim Mulla, a Blackburn with Darwen city councilor, was also suspended after anti-Israel Facebook posts surfaced.According to a report from The Independent, many of the comments by Aziz were apparently made in August 2014, including one Facebook post in which Aziz wrote that “Jews and Muslims lived together in the Middle East, in peace pre 1948. Perhaps it would have been wiser to create Israel in America it’s big enough. They could relocate even now.”In other posts he appeared to liken Israeli actions toward the Palestinians to those of the Nazis against Jews, referred to Israel as an illegal state, and made comments about “Zionist invaders.” ANTISEMITISM: Ilyas Aziz @ilyasA3i3-Labour councillor in Nottingham pic.twitter.com/3QTtD6t1Ed— Javier Yearson (@javieryearson) May 2, 2016-Aziz also called on Jews to “stop drinking Gaza blood.“If the Israelis really wanted to target terrorists why aren’t they killing themselves?” he wrote. The move to suspend Aziz follows the suspension last week of two other Labour figures, including former London mayor Ken Livingstone, who was on the party’s executive council.-ANTISEMITISM: Ilyas Aziz https://t.co/32zJIQqy9H via @GuidoFawkes pic.twitter.com/AQIMIenwwa— Javier Yearson (@javieryearson) May 2, 2016-The party’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has launched an independent review of anti-Semitism and racism within its ranks.A series of anti-Semitic scandals has rocked the British left-wing party.Ilyas Aziz—Nottingham Labour councillor here pictured with Corbyn wearing Corbyn shirt—suspended for anti-semitism. pic.twitter.com/ekjnMoQvDh— Hughster (@hughster) May 2, 2016-The Guido Fawkes political blog on Monday reported that Mulla in July 2015 posted a video claiming Israel was behind the Sandy Hook massacre, writing: “Now he know [sic] what he is talking about. He is talking facts.”Mulla also posted a photo calling for Israel’s relocation to the United States in August 2015 — the same infographic that led to the suspension of Labour MP Naz Shah last week.In June 2015, he posted a photo of an IDF soldier with a Palestinian woman and wrote: “Apartheid at its best. Zionist Jews are a disgrace to humanity.”The anti-Semitism row flared up last week when Labour legislator Shah was suspended for posting anti-Israel material before she was elected to Parliament. Similar to Aziz, she also posted a comment on social media suggesting Israel be moved to the US.London’s Jewish Chronicle, citing the Guido Fawkes website, reported at the time that Shah employed an aide, Mohammed Shabbir, who had “previously posted tweets about a ‘Palestinian Holocaust in Gaza’ and repeatedly used the term ‘Zio.’”In a blog post about sex crimes and grooming, the report said Shabbir “claimed Russian Orthodox Jews were involved in ‘the sex trafficking trade — demand is particularly high among Charedim, the conservative Orthodox Jews, many of whom are regular clients of brothels….’”Shah’s suspension prompted Livingstone to defend her by saying that Adolf Hitler had been a Zionist early in his political career, before the Nazi leader “went mad” and murdered six million Jews.Livingstone, who has refused to apologize and insists his claim is true, was quickly suspended from the party where he had sat on the executive council, but his provocative comments led Corbyn to set up an independent review of anti-Semitism and other racism within the party, after initially denying there was a problem.Speaking at a May Day event on Sunday, Corbyn rebuffed calls to denounce contacts with terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah, while repeating his declaration that the Labour Party is against anti-Semitism.But as Labour attempted to push back against efforts to label it anti-Semitic, it also came under fire for Corbyn’s past contacts with Hamas and Hezbollah, both sworn to Israel’s destruction.A statement from Corbyn’s spokesperson said he would continue to engage such groups, while denying that doing so was tantamount to an endorsement.Ed Miliband, Corbyn’s predecessor as Labour leader, prevented Livingstone from publishing “ridiculous & ignorant views on Hitler and Zionism” when he was running as the party’s candidate for London mayor in 2012, according to a former adviser. Tom Baldwin, Miliband’s former spin doctor, tweeted Monday: “Livingstone wanted it in his ‘memoirs’ before the mayoral election. Ed told him he was wrong and to take it out.”
World Jewish Congress slams YouTube over neo-Nazi videos-‘Do you really believe that songs glorifying, or inciting to, the mass murder of Jews fall under freedom of speech?’ says executive VP in letter-By AFP May 2, 2016, 9:02 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
The World Jewish Congress on Monday accused the German unit of YouTube of failing to stop neo-Nazis from using the online video channel to distribute thousands of anti-Semitic tracks. The WJC sent Philipp Justus, the managing director of the German unit of YouTube parent company Google, a letter demanding more decisive action to take down illegal material praising the Holocaust and Adolf Hitler.“Why is it that Google steadfastly refuses to take action against the proliferation of racist and anti-Semitic material on its platforms?” Executive Vice President Robert Singer of the New York-based WJC wrote in a letter made available to AFP.“Do you really believe that songs glorifying, or inciting to, the mass murder of Jews fall under freedom of speech?”Singer highlighted one song in particular, “In Belsen” by far-right group Kommando Freisler, which he said was “widely available” on YouTube despite the fact that it had been banned in Germany and the band members behind it given suspended jail terms in 2009 for inciting racial hatred.Singer referenced a previous letter of complaint dated from last September by the director of the memorial at the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Jens-Christian Wagner, asking for “In Belsen” to be blocked.WJC spokesman Michael Thaidigsmann said that letter had received no response and that following a report on the letter in the mass-selling German daily Bild on Saturday, many but not all versions of the song had been pulled from YouTube.Further tracks from the same album and “thousands of clips” from other neo-Nazi bands could also still be seen, he said.“It is obvious that Google/YouTube does not seriously deal with this matter, that it lacks any proactive attitude, and that even when offensive posts are being flagged, it is very slow to remove the incriminating files from its service,” Thaidigsmann said.“If I post something from Adele or Taylor Swift, you can bet it’ll be gone in a few hours,” he said, referring to the company’s approach to copyright violations.A spokesman for YouTube’s German unit said that the company had “clear guidelines to ban hate speech against certain groups or content that incites racial hatred”.“We remove all videos that violate these guidelines as soon as they are reported. That also applies to banned right-wing extremist music,” he added.By Monday afternoon, all of the offending videos cited in an email from the WJC had been removed from YouTube.Germany has strict hate speech laws and its authorities have pressed social media companies to do more to police incitement on their sites.
70 years on, Holocaust survivors get bar mitzvahs in Jerusalem-Men and women who did not have the coming-of-age ceremony as children during World War II mark rite of passage at Western Wall-By AFP May 2, 2016, 8:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Fifty Holocaust survivors who were prevented from getting a traditional Jewish coming-of-age ceremony finally received it during an emotional event at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday. The septuagenarians and octogenarians were given bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah ceremonies, which are normally staged for male and female Jews at age 12 or 13, in an event held ahead of Israel’s Holocaust Memorial Day.The 13 men and 37 women had mostly missed their ceremonies due to the war and its after effects, so Israel’s government organized a joint one at Jerusalem’s Western Wall. The men and women filed into the two separate parts of the gender-divided site.In the male area, the men read from the Torah while wearing small leather boxes called tefillin, containing religious verses, on their heads.A number of the survivors cried during a funeral prayer sung by European Jews to commemorate the Holocaust.Gal Moshe, an 80-year-old who came to Israel from Poland after World War II, said it was an emotional day.“The memorial prayer moved me particularly as I thought of my family, and especially of my mother. I literally cried.”Moshe, who said he was unable to discuss the Holocaust, was never given a bar mitzvah in Poland. After the war and emigrating, “the economic situation was so difficult for us that we didn’t even think about doing the bar mitzvah.”“When I found out I could do a bar mitzvah now I wanted it a lot and I also asked my two grandsons to come with me. I was at their bar mitzvah and now they are at mine.”For Jews, a bar or bat mitzvah — literally the son or daughter of commandment — is when children become adults and are given new duties and responsibilities.Dr. Robert Rozett, director of the libraries at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center, said huge numbers of Jews suppressed their faith during the war — meaning many thousands missed out on the ceremonies.“For many, many people (bar mitzvahs) were not something they could have, either because they were in a place where there was no religious observance, because it wasn’t allowed or maybe they were in a camp.”He said there were a number of reasons why those who missed the ceremony at the age of 13 were unable to do it once their lives stabilized, including poverty.Others, like Yitzhak Rezink, found themselves in the Soviet Union where religion was frowned upon.He survived the war in the Kovno ghetto in Lithuania but was “left alone after my parents were murdered.”After the war, the Soviet forces took control and religion was suppressed.“The Russians took over at the end of the war and we couldn’t leave until 1970,” he said.A 2015 study found that some 45,000 of Israel’s estimated remaining 190,000 Holocaust survivors are now living in poverty, while estimates of those in America and other countries are also high.International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held on January 27 but Israel commemorates it separately on Thursday.About six million Jews died at the hands of Nazi Germany and its allies during World War II.
Trump looks to crush Cruz as Indiana votes Tuesday-‘If we win Indiana, it’s over,’ says Republican front-runner; ‘I am in for the distance,’ says Texas senator-By Michael Mathes May 2, 2016, 9:34 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
WASHINGTON (AFP) — An increasingly confident Donald Trump seeks to trounce rival Ted Cruz Tuesday in Indiana and stake his claim to the Republican US presidential nomination, as the billionaire trains his sights on presumptive Democratic standard-bearer Hillary Clinton. The “stop Trump” movement faces a moment of truth in the Midwestern state, where Cruz’s campaign is struggling to win over voters ahead of a potentially decisive primary.“We are going to win,” Trump told CNN early Monday. The real estate mogul told a rally in Indiana that his campaign was soaring “like a rocket ship,” and that with a new NBC poll showing him 15 percentage points ahead of his main challenger Cruz he was all but assured of winning the state.“If we win Indiana, it’s over,” he said in Terre Haute.Cruz was counting on Indiana acting as a Trump firewall, blocking him from receiving the 1,237 delegates necessary to secure the nomination at the Republican convention in Cleveland in July. The Texas senator has openly stated his goal is to snatch the nomination on a second ballot, when most delegates become free to vote for whomever they choose — but which will only be held if Trump falls short of a majority.Trump has so far amassed 1,002 delegates, according to CNN’s tally. He now needs just under half of the 502 in play in the remaining 10 contests in order to secure the nomination on the first ballot in Cleveland.Indiana’s winner-takes-all primary could hand the front-runner 57 in one swoop. With momentum favoring Trump — he has won the last six contests — Cruz put on a brave face, telling reporters “the stakes are enormously high” and that he would stay in the race regardless of the Indiana outcome.“I am in for the distance,” Cruz said. “As long as we have a viable path to victory, I am competing to the end.”Should the conservative senator fall short in Indiana, even his supporters see an extremely steep road ahead. If Trump sweeps the state “it could be over,” former Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler acknowledged on MSNBC.In that scenario, Trump would need just 39 percent of remaining delegates in a map that favors the billionaire front-runner, polling well ahead in both largest states, California and New Jersey. But if Cruz pulls off an upset, he would be strongly positioned in the crunch state of California, Tyler noted, citing Cruz’s formidable ground game and superior organization in The Golden State, which votes June 7 on the final day of the Republican race.Clinton, with her formidable lead over Bernie Sanders, needs only 21 percent of remaining Democratic delegates to win her party’s nomination. But Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist senator representing Vermont, wasn’t throwing in the towel. At a Washington news conference Sanders insisted the Democratic race would come down to a “contested” convention, and appealed to hundreds of so-called superdelegates in a bid to grab the nomination. These number around 700 and, in contrast to pledged delegates, they can vote for any candidate at the party convention in Philadelphia in July.Either candidate needs 2,383 delegates for victory. Currently Clinton has 2,176 including 510 superdelegates, while Sanders has 1,400 including 41 superdelegates, according to CNN’s tally.Even with a Sanders nomination a near impossibility, he insisted Monday that his focus on reducing economic inequality and the influence of “special interests and the billionaire class” in politics was resonating with voters.Meanwhile Trump was already looking beyond Tuesday’s contest to a general election matchup with Clinton.“We’re going to get there anyway,” he said in Indiana. “And then we can focus on crooked Hillary. Please, let’s focus on Hillary.”Last week the two front-runners clashed over gender issues, with Trump warning voters that Clinton was “playing the woman card” and that if she were a man she would not get more than five percent of the vote.Clinton dismissed the comments, saying she was accustomed to “dealing with men who sometimes get off the reservation in the way they behave and how they speak.”Trump doubled down again Monday, saying that “if she didn’t play the woman card she would have no chance whatsoever of winning.”
