GAZA, Palestinian Territories - Unrest that erupted several weeks ago at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site spread Friday to Gaza in the form of deadly border clashes with Palestinian protesters, as Israeli security forces struggled to contain a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers.For the first time since the current violence began, clashes broke out along the Gaza border after Palestinians in the territory ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the frontier. Six Palestinians were killed and a dozen were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.The Israeli military said "More than a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone engaging the forces at the security fence. Rioters reached the security fence- hurled a grenade, rocks and rolled burning tires at Israeli forces ... threatening to breach the fence and storm the adjacent communities." It said troops fired warning shots and then fired at main instigators to prevent their advance.Recent days have seen a series of attacks by young Palestinians wielding household items like kitchen knives, screwdrivers and even a vegetable peeler. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - One survivor of last month's crush and stampede at the hajj in Saudi Arabia recalled seeing so many bodies that he couldn't tell how many there were.The Associated Press sought to answer that question, arriving at a death toll of at least 1,470. That made the Sept. 24 disaster the deadliest accident ever at the annual pilgrimage. And hundreds remain missing.The AP count is 701 higher than Saudi Arabia's official tally of 769 killed and 934 injured in the Sept. 24 disaster in Mina, a few miles from the holy city of Mecca.Saudi officials, who could not be immediately reached for comment Friday, previously have said their tally remains accurate, although an investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing. Authorities have not updated their casualty toll since Sept. 26.The hesitancy to acknowledge a higher toll may reflect the leadership's reflex to clamp down on information as it struggles with multiple pressures. The kingdom is dealing with a war in Yemen, Russia's entry into the Syrian conflict and low oil prices that are straining the budget — and the hajj tragedy is already opening it up to sharp criticism from opponents, particularly Iran.The previous deadliest-ever incident at the annual hajj happened in 1990, when a stampede killed 1,426 people. Still, he said, the hajj deaths "reinforces a view that at this moment, Saudi Arabia looks weak."The delay in announcing new figures may come from wanting not wanting to fuel more criticism from Iran, or because of the kingdom's traditional top-down governance.Despite Iran's sharp rhetoric over the deaths, other countries have been far more muted. Election day is still more than a week away, but thousands of students in Newfoundland and Labrador have already cast their ballots.The Canadian Federation of Students says that more than 2,500 students voted in the advance polling station at Memorial University."It was really exciting to hear that students were really engaged and connected and excited to cast a ballot for the first time," said Travis Perry, chairperson with the Canadian Federation of Students.This is the first time Elections Canada has set up pop-up returning offices on campus. MUN was one of 29 college and university campuses across Canada participating in the pilot project.From Monday to Thursday, students queued up in droves, with lineups often stretching far out the polling station door.Miles Alexander, an 18-year-old student from St. George's, said he was excited to vote for the first time."I think it's important for students to vote in general. It's good to have that young population getting involved in politics early," he said."The resources are available, clearly. If you can, do it, why not?"More than 42,000 students voting across Canada-According to the Canada's chief electoral officer, more than 42,000 students across Canada voted in the first three days the poll stations were on campuses. Nick Baldwin from Carbonear said he hasn't voted in the past few elections, but recently realized it was time for him to get engaged."I haven't voted in the past couple and realized I had started complaining about it. GAZA, Palestinian Territories - Unrest that erupted several weeks ago at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site spread Friday to Gaza in the form of deadly border clashes with Palestinian protesters, as Israeli security forces struggled to contain a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers.For the first time since the current violence began, clashes broke out along the Gaza border after Palestinians in the territory ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the frontier. Six Palestinians were killed and a dozen were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.The Israeli military said "More than a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone engaging the forces at the security fence. Rioters reached the security fence- hurled a grenade, rocks and rolled burning tires at Israeli forces ... threatening to breach the fence and storm the adjacent communities." It said troops fired warning shots and then fired at main instigators to prevent their advance.Recent days have seen a series of attacks by young Palestinians wielding household items like kitchen knives, screwdrivers and even a vegetable peeler. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - One survivor of last month's crush and stampede at the hajj in Saudi Arabia recalled seeing so many bodies that he couldn't tell how many there were.The Associated Press sought to answer that question, arriving at a death toll of at least 1,470. That made the Sept. 24 disaster the deadliest accident ever at the annual pilgrimage. And hundreds remain missing.The AP count is 701 higher than Saudi Arabia's official tally of 769 killed and 934 injured in the Sept. 24 disaster in Mina, a few miles from the holy city of Mecca.Saudi officials, who could not be immediately reached for comment Friday, previously have said their tally remains accurate, although an investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing. Authorities have not updated their casualty toll since Sept. 26.The hesitancy to acknowledge a higher toll may reflect the leadership's reflex to clamp down on information as it struggles with multiple pressures. The kingdom is dealing with a war in Yemen, Russia's entry into the Syrian conflict and low oil prices that are straining the budget — and the hajj tragedy is already opening it up to sharp criticism from opponents, particularly Iran.The previous deadliest-ever incident at the annual hajj happened in 1990, when a stampede killed 1,426 people. Still, he said, the hajj deaths "reinforces a view that at this moment, Saudi Arabia looks weak."The delay in announcing new figures may come from wanting not wanting to fuel more criticism from Iran, or because of the kingdom's traditional top-down governance.Despite Iran's sharp rhetoric over the deaths, other countries have been far more muted. That is likely due to Saudi Arabia's powerful influence, including years of patronage using its oil wealth, and because the kingdom can set the quota of pilgrims each country can send to the hajj."This is really unfortunate that in an event where people are dead, the families don't have any kind of transparency," said Madawi al-Rasheed, a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science's Middle East Center."Unfortunately for these Muslim countries, they are at a weaker position," she said, "and a lot of them worry about future pilgrimages, where they might not get the full quota allocated to them."That kind of hesitancy about criticism has been seen in Pakistan. Election day is still more than a week away, but thousands of students in Newfoundland and Labrador have already cast their ballots.The Canadian Federation of Students says that more than 2,500 students voted in the advance polling station at Memorial University."It was really exciting to hear that students were really engaged and connected and excited to cast a ballot for the first time," said Travis Perry, chairperson with the Canadian Federation of Students.This is the first time Elections Canada has set up pop-up returning offices on campus. MUN was one of 29 college and university campuses across Canada participating in the pilot project.From Monday to Thursday, students queued up in droves, with lineups often stretching far out the polling station door.Miles Alexander, an 18-year-old student from St. George's, said he was excited to vote for the first time."I think it's important for students to vote in general. Nick Baldwin from Carbonear said he hasn't voted in the past few elections, but recently realized it was time for him to get engaged."I haven't voted in the past couple and realized I had started complaining about it. I figured maybe I shouldn't be complaining if I wasn't voting," said Baldwin."If you're going to complain about anything you don't really have a right to complain if you don't go out and try to make a difference."Students like Haley Moreland from Saskatchewan could vote for the representatives in their home riding, regardless of where they were from."I think it's really important with this election," said Moreland."I'm starting to go into the workforce and I'm feeling a lot more the effects of the government." Youth voter turnout historically low-In the 2011 federal election, there was a 38.8 per cent turnout for youth between the ages of 16 and 24. In contrast, voter turnout was 75.1 per cent for people ages 65 to 74.Perry said he thinks more young people will show up to the polls this year because they're frustrated with the current political situation."Students are fed up with the state of our country and are looking for a federal party to step up to the plate. Unfortunately we're not seeing any of the political parties put student issues front and centre and talk about the big picture," he said."I think that's why students are going to show up to the polls this year, because they're tired of a government that's not doing work for them."Elections Canada also set up two temporary stations at 13 aboriginal friendship centres and two urban YMCAs.There will be another polling station on the MUN campus on October 19, however it will only be available to students voting in the riding of St. John's East.
