The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are hard at work trying to gain control of the bottleneck of the Red Sea, thus allowing them to control Israel’s southernmost naval bay, near the port of Eilat, as well as all maritime trade in Europe, which passes through the Suez Canal and the sea Red as it heads towards Asia and Africa.The Shiite Houthi militia "Ansar Allah" has already taken over large areas in northern Yemen, in the capital Sanaa and on the port city of Hodeidah, and is now working under Iran's direction to take over the strategic strait of Bab el-Mandeb, at the mouth of the Red Sea.Reports from Yemen indicate that in recent days, the Houthi militia forces tried to take over several coastal areas near Bab el-Mandeb but were stopped by the Yemeni army.The Houthis are aided by members of the presidential guard who are loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was president until being deposed in 2012.The rebels recently attacked the presidential palace in Yemen, leading to the resignation of current President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Their three daughters, two of them hurt in the blast, testified as well.The defense, representing the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization, denies officials were privy to knowledge of the attacks. It says victims' experiences are not relevant to the question of responsibility.Sokolow said he was sitting at his desk on the 38th floor of the World Trade Center's south tower when the north tower was struck on Sept. 11, 2001. AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The head of a U.N. inquiry into last summer's conflict between Israel and Gaza said on Monday he would resign after Israeli allegations of bias due to consultancy work he did for the Palestine Liberation Organisation.Canadian academic William Schabas was appointed last August by the head of the United Nations Human Rights Council to lead a three-member group looking into alleged war crimes during Israel's military offensive in Gaza.In a letter to the commission, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, Schabas said he would step down immediately to prevent the issue from overshadowing the preparation of the report and its findings, which are due to be published in March.Schabas' departure highlights the sensitivity of the U.N. investigation just weeks after prosecutors at the International Criminal Court in The Hague said they had started a preliminary inquiry into alleged atrocities in the Palestinian territories.In the letter, Schabas said a legal opinion he wrote for the Palestine Liberation Organisation in 2012, for which he was paid $1,300, was not different from advice he had given to many other governments and organisations."My views on Israel and Palestine as well as on many other issues were well known and very public," he wrote. "This work in defence of human rights appears to have made me a huge target for malicious attacks (...)."Israel had long criticized Schabas' appointment, citing his record as a strong critic of the Jewish state and its current political leadership. My name is Nasser Nawa’jah.I am 32 years old and I live in the Palestinian village of Susiya in the South Hebron Hills, in the occupied West Bank.My father was three years old in 1948 when his family was expelled from Gerityan, the village in which he was born, and they moved to join their relatives in Susyia El Kadim (ancient Susiya).My grandfather hoped to return to his village but its lands became part of the State of Israel and his temporary exile became permanent.I was born in Susiya El Kadim, but like my father, I didn’t have the chance to grow up in the place in which I was born. I was four years old in 1986 when military forces evacuated my family by force after Israel declared our village and the surrounding area a “national archaeological park.”We have not returned since. I am prohibited from visiting the “national park,” which is home to the cave where my mother gave birth to me.We have not been able to live in peace and quiet since. Israel has repeatedly tried to expel us from our homes and lands, while the Israeli settlement “Susiya,” established nearby in 1983 is flourishing.In the beginning of the 1990s, military jeeps kicked us out of our homes, but we returned to live on our lands along with several other families. In 2001, we were again evacuated by the army, which demolished the caves we resided in, blocked ancient water cisterns, and destroyed our fields.The Israeli Civil Administration (Israeli military governance) deems our tents to be “illegal” settlements and is threatening to expel us.Our story is the story of many Palestinians who live in Area C, which comprises 60 percent of the West Bank.Between 1988 and 2013, the Civil Administration issued 12,570 demolition orders on various structures in Area C, of them, 2,470 were carried out. Not far from Susiya, there are residents of 12 villages who have been under constant threat of expulsion for 15 years.The Israeli military declared the area they live in a “fire zone” (Fire Zone 918) and, since 1999, has been trying to evacuate the residents and banish them from their lands. Around 700 residents were evacuated in 1999 and today an estimated 1,300 residents live in the caves and tents.Like us, they are forced to fight for their right to live on their families’ land within the Israeli court system. As Palestinians we do not expect to find justice within this system, though we work within it to buy time to stall the demolitions of our homes.

This is why I am asking for your help, as members of the European Parliament, who may attend the meeting today with these officers.Please take this opportunity to ask them what we cannot. And after you hear them, I personally invite you to come to Susiya and see the reality in which we live.
Where’s my water?
I want to start with a question regarding one of the most basic human needs: Water.Why does Israel withhold a water supply from us, while pumping water out of the aquifer in the West Bank, which is considered part of Palestinian territory under international law, into Israeli settlements? The pipe that transfers water to the Israeli settlement of “Susiya” passes through our private fields. While the settlements and outposts enjoy a regular supply of water, Israel refuses to connect us to the water system.We use dozens of water cisterns to collect the little rainwater that falls in our area, but at present, our access to 70 percent of these water cisterns has been blocked.Even when we receive a permit from the military to access one of our water cisterns, we are subject to violent attacks by settlers in the area. We have no other choice but to purchase containers of water, and pay five times what our friends in Israel pay for water.Please do ask these officers: Is it fair that we pay five times more?
Why can’t I live on my land?
The land on which I live belonged to my family before the State of Israel was established. With what authority does the Israeli military deem our homes to be “illegal?”What kind of law turns me and my family into ”criminals” because we insist on living on, and working, the land that has belonged to us for generations? In an attempt to protect our village, we even devised a master plan. Why did the Civil Administration’s planning committee reject the plan with - racist - claims that our plan, which intended to preserve our way of life, “is damaging to us?”Since the military destroyed our caves, we live in tents. Many of them were donated by European countries and we are thankful for the contribution to our existence. But the Civil Administration has issued demolition orders for these tents as well.What justice is there in Israel asking to destroy our village and expel us from our lands, while providing infrastructure and protection for Israeli settlements and outposts in violation of international law? Is Europe listening? I am the father of three small children who have never known what it means to live in a secure home. Israel is trying to turn them into refugees in their own land, but I will not let this happen.My family and I are staying on our land despite the difficulties.We hope the European community will listen to us and help us protect our rights, so that we can live in security in our own home, in our own state, alongside Israel.Nasser Nawa’jah is a Palestinian resident of Susiya, a village in the South Hebron Hills, and a non-violent Palestinian activist.

All Christians are called to work together, in mutual acceptance and trust, in order to serve the cause of peace and justice,” Francis went on to say.The Pope paused to reflect on the issue of ecumenical dialogue. “The ways in which the Churches expressed their communion in the early centuries” and the sacraments, particularly baptism, are important focus points in the work of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches. vatican city-On 6 June the Pope is to pay a “flash” visit to Sarajevo, a city that was once considered the “Jerusalem of Europe” and which John Paul II visited in 1997, a city that was the theatre of the events that sparked the Great War just over a century ago and which came to symbolise the Balkan war. Pope Francis unexpectedly announced his visit at the end of yesterday’s Angelus, adding yet another trip to his already busy 2015 schedule. So far this year, the Pope has travelled to Sri Lanka and the Philippines and is due to visit Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay in July, as well as the United States in September. Francis will only be paying a day visit to Bosnia Herzegovina, as he did when he visited the Albanian capital, Tirana, last September.“God willing, on Saturday 6 June I will travel to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” the Pope said in his announcement. “I ask today that you pray so that my visit to that dear population may be an encouragement for the Catholic faithful, arouse ferments of good and contribute to the consolidation of brotherhood and peace, of interreligious dialogue and friendship.''Francis’ references to interreligious dialogue and friendship were spontaneous. The assembly, which will be taking place between 4 and 7 February, was presented at a press conference in the Vatican today. The themes listed in the preparatory document include: aggression against women, the role of women in the Church and plastic surgery as a “burka made of flesh”. A promotional video clip featuring Italian actress Nancy Brilli who is the face of the event, attracted both praise and criticism in the English-speaking world.“The expression “women’s cultures” does not imply any division from men’s cultures, but shows our awareness that there is a women’s “perspective” on the world and all that surrounds us, on life and on experience,” the “outline document” for the plenary assembly - published on the Vatican dicastery’s website www.cultura.va – reads. The text was “composed by a group of women in the light of pastoral considerations sent in by [the] Members and Consultors” of the Pontifical Council. The document presents four themes: “Between equality and difference: the quest for an equilibrium”, “‘Generativity’ as a symbolic code”, “The female body: between culture and biology” (in this section the text mentions the issue of domestic violence, plastic surgery as a “burqa made of flesh” and how to avoid a purely functional approach to women and their bodies (seductive, metrification, marketing)?) and “Women and religion: flight or new forms of participation in the life of the Church?” (“What spaces are proposed to women in the life of the Church?”). Investigators have made two arrests for possession of pornographic material related to children, one involves former Polish Nuncio Jozef Wesolowski who has already been convicted for child abuse. The Vatican judiciary has guaranteed that the facts will be examined with the “utmost rigour”. The financial crimes committed are pretty serious too (two IOR bank accounts were seized and 200 positions were reviewed in 2014), in particular a conviction for “aggravated fraud”. There have even been attempts to involve the Vatican in “the global trafficking of narcotic substances”. This is the general picture painted by the Vatican Tribunal’s Promoter of Justice, Gian Pietro Milano during the opening of the judicial year of the pontifical State today. He also informed that an “administrator” has been found for the Emanuela Orlandi case (Emanuela Orlandi was a citizen of Vatican City who mysteriously disappeared on 22 June 1983, Ed.). He lamented Italy’s feeble collaboration on the Nunzio Scarano case. Mgr. Scarano is a former employee of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, who was arrested in Italy on charges of fraud.“The Vatican City State,” Milano said, “has gone from being a small Italian “enclave” to an active member of an international community that is becoming increasingly global not just in terms of customs but unfortunately also in terms of criminal activity, which, as His Holiness Pope Francis highlighted during his visit to Assisi in 2013, is the cancer of society. The Holy See, in tune with its nature and mission, joins in the efforts of the international community to protect and promote legality in general and especially the integrity, stability and transparency of the economic and financial sectors and the prevention and fight against criminal activities; its judicial system was modified in order to achieve this. The result was rigorous modernisation of the legal fabric which was achieved without relinquishing the primacy principle of Canon Law and the penal system of the Vatican City State can be considered one of the most comprehensive systems of today,” Milan stressed. He said the Vatican in fact has a far more detailed money-laundering law than the one recently adopted by the Italian justice system. And a cutting edge confiscatory regime. Following reforms set in motion under Benedict XVI’s pontificate, the year that has just gone by, “was marked by a widespread effort to enact the legislation reforms Pope Francis had called for in 2013.”“Unfortunately,” statistically the overall picture seems to show a “rise in crimes” Milano said. Without giving away names, he went on to say that in the year that has just passed, his office ordered six arrests, “which shows a marked and worrying statistical increase compared to previous years.” Three of these arrests were well known: the entrepreneur Marcello Di Finizio from Trieste, who spent a dozen or so days in prison during the Christmas period for repeated attempts to climb St. Peter’s dome; a member of the Femen group who staged a bare-breasted protest in front of the Nativity Scene in St. Peter’s Square on the Feast of St. Stephen; and Jozef Wesolowski, former Nuncio to the Dominican Republic. The Vatican’s “attorney general” dedicated a number of paragraphs in his report to the case, without specifically mentioning Wesolowski’s name. He underlined that “investigators are working independently, free from any interference and their work aims to provide a rigorous examination of the facts, their basis and evidence”. He explained why the Polish prelate was tried (and sentenced) by the tribunal on the basis of his status civitatis and by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the basis of his clerical status. The Vatican “attorney general” recalled that Wesolowski appealed his sentence. Aside from Wesolowski, the Vatican police also investigated another case of possession of pornographic materials related to children. Last year a total of 62 rulings were made on criminal cases, which include simple cases of pickpocketing and theft at St. Peter’s. Regarding financial crimes, the Promoter of Justice - without providing any further details – mentioned legal action taken against a “cathedral chapter” which was reported by an “eminent ecclesiastical figure”, which concluded in a four-year prison sentence for “aggravated fraud” including payment of damages and court fees. In 2014, the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) reported five cases of suspicious operations to the Promoter of Justice; the Office is looking into three of these. In two of the cases bank accounts held with the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) were seized. Again, no reference was made to specific cases such as the one involving the former president of the IOR, Angelo Caloia. Last year, the FIA examined 200 positions in total. The Vatican police seized documents relating to active or former accounts held with the Institute for the Works of Religion.The Promoter of Justice, Milano, went on to say that international drug trafficking “unfortunately did not leave out small State unscathed. There have been isolated – but immediately thwarted – attempts by traffickers without scruples, employing unusual methods.” Milano then mentioned “three shipments” made from foreign States to the Vatican and said these are being monitored by the Vatican police. He lamented the failure of a multinational police operation after a foreign newspaper unexpectedly published the news so no one turned up to pick up the package containing the drugs.The Promoter of Justice stressed that the Vatican still believes in an active and loyal collaboration with other States in order to combat criminal activity in the financial sector, reporting that the Vatican received ten letters rogatory in 2014, eight of them from Italy. The Papal State rejected one Italian request (the Vatican Tribunal was already in the process of confiscating bank deposits) and two foreign requests which probably came from the Dominical Republic in relation to the Wesolowski case. In these cases too, the Vatican rejected the requests because it had already begun criminal proceedings. In what appeared to be a reference to the Nunzio Scarano case, Milano then lamented Italy’s response to the Vatican’s request for financial information on accounts held by a cleric indicted in Italy for a series of crimes (fraud, money-laundering and corruption) and under investigation in the Vatican as well. The Vatican had also asked for information relating to the investigations and interrogations carried out in Italy. Not only was the material Italy sent incomplete but it also included evidence that was obtained using “improper” means that were “not in line with current international protocols”.When he moved onto the civil sector, Gian Piero Milano made a clear reference to Emanuela Orlandi, the Vatican citizen who disappeared in the 1980’s, in what remains a “delicate and largely unresolved case, which over the years has attracted the attention of the mass media and public opinion regarding the perplexing circumstances in which it occurred and the touching effects it had on those who knew and were close to the victim.” Milano announced that the Tribunal had appointed an “administrator” to handle the case. In terms of proposals for the future, Milano suggested introducing usury - which could lead to money-laundering - as a crime. According to the Promoter of Justice, tapping is still a “vital” instrument in investigations. The opening of the Judicial Year was marked with a mass celebrated by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are hard at work trying to gain control of the bottleneck of the Red Sea, thus allowing them to control Israel’s southernmost naval bay, near the port of Eilat, as well as all maritime trade in Europe, which passes through the Suez Canal and the sea Red as it heads towards Asia and Africa.The Shiite Houthi militia "Ansar Allah" has already taken over large areas in northern Yemen, in the capital Sanaa and on the port city of Hodeidah, and is now working under Iran's direction to take over the strategic strait of Bab el-Mandeb, at the mouth of the Red Sea.Reports from Yemen indicate that in recent days, the Houthi militia forces tried to take over several coastal areas near Bab el-Mandeb but were stopped by the Yemeni army.The Houthis are aided by members of the presidential guard who are loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was president until being deposed in 2012.The rebels recently attacked the presidential palace in Yemen, leading to the resignation of current President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Their three daughters, two of them hurt in the blast, testified as well.The defense, representing the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization, denies officials were privy to knowledge of the attacks. "This work in defence of human rights appears to have made me a huge target for malicious attacks (...)."Israel had long criticized Schabas' appointment, citing his record as a strong critic of the Jewish state and its current political leadership. My name is Nasser Nawa’jah.I am 32 years old and I live in the Palestinian village of Susiya in the South Hebron Hills, in the occupied West Bank.My father was three years old in 1948 when his family was expelled from Gerityan, the village in which he was born, and they moved to join their relatives in Susyia El Kadim (ancient Susiya).My grandfather hoped to return to his village but its lands became part of the State of Israel and his temporary exile became permanent.I was born in Susiya El Kadim, but like my father, I didn’t have the chance to grow up in the place in which I was born. I was four years old in 1986 when military forces evacuated my family by force after Israel declared our village and the surrounding area a “national archaeological park.”We have not returned since. I am prohibited from visiting the “national park,” which is home to the cave where my mother gave birth to me.We have not been able to live in peace and quiet since. Israel has repeatedly tried to expel us from our homes and lands, while the Israeli settlement “Susiya,” established nearby in 1983 is flourishing.In the beginning of the 1990s, military jeeps kicked us out of our homes, but we returned to live on our lands along with several other families. In 2001, we were again evacuated by the army, which demolished the caves we resided in, blocked ancient water cisterns, and destroyed our fields.The Israeli Civil Administration (Israeli military governance) deems our tents to be “illegal” settlements and is threatening to expel us.Our story is the story of many Palestinians who live in Area C, which comprises 60 percent of the West Bank.Between 1988 and 2013, the Civil Administration issued 12,570 demolition orders on various structures in Area C, of them, 2,470 were carried out. Not far from Susiya, there are residents of 12 villages who have been under constant threat of expulsion for 15 years.The Israeli military declared the area they live in a “fire zone” (Fire Zone 918) and, since 1999, has been trying to evacuate the residents and banish them from their lands. Around 700 residents were evacuated in 1999 and today an estimated 1,300 residents live in the caves and tents.Like us, they are forced to fight for their right to live on their families’ land within the Israeli court system. As Palestinians we do not expect to find justice within this system, though we work within it to buy time to stall the demolitions of our homes.

This is why I am asking for your help, as members of the European Parliament, who may attend the meeting today with these officers.Please take this opportunity to ask them what we cannot. And after you hear them, I personally invite you to come to Susiya and see the reality in which we live.
Where’s my water?
I want to start with a question regarding one of the most basic human needs: Water.Why does Israel withhold a water supply from us, while pumping water out of the aquifer in the West Bank, which is considered part of Palestinian territory under international law, into Israeli settlements? The pipe that transfers water to the Israeli settlement of “Susiya” passes through our private fields. While the settlements and outposts enjoy a regular supply of water, Israel refuses to connect us to the water system.We use dozens of water cisterns to collect the little rainwater that falls in our area, but at present, our access to 70 percent of these water cisterns has been blocked.Even when we receive a permit from the military to access one of our water cisterns, we are subject to violent attacks by settlers in the area. We have no other choice but to purchase containers of water, and pay five times what our friends in Israel pay for water.Please do ask these officers: Is it fair that we pay five times more?
Why can’t I live on my land?
The land on which I live belonged to my family before the State of Israel was established. With what authority does the Israeli military deem our homes to be “illegal?”What kind of law turns me and my family into ”criminals” because we insist on living on, and working, the land that has belonged to us for generations? In an attempt to protect our village, we even devised a master plan. Why did the Civil Administration’s planning committee reject the plan with - racist - claims that our plan, which intended to preserve our way of life, “is damaging to us?”Since the military destroyed our caves, we live in tents. Many of them were donated by European countries and we are thankful for the contribution to our existence. But the Civil Administration has issued demolition orders for these tents as well.What justice is there in Israel asking to destroy our village and expel us from our lands, while providing infrastructure and protection for Israeli settlements and outposts in violation of international law? Is Europe listening? I am the father of three small children who have never known what it means to live in a secure home. Israel is trying to turn them into refugees in their own land, but I will not let this happen.My family and I are staying on our land despite the difficulties.We hope the European community will listen to us and help us protect our rights, so that we can live in security in our own home, in our own state, alongside Israel.Nasser Nawa’jah is a Palestinian resident of Susiya, a village in the South Hebron Hills, and a non-violent Palestinian activist.

Francis will only be paying a day visit to Bosnia Herzegovina, as he did when he visited the Albanian capital, Tirana, last September.“God willing, on Saturday 6 June I will travel to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” the Pope said in his announcement. “I ask today that you pray so that my visit to that dear population may be an encouragement for the Catholic faithful, arouse ferments of good and contribute to the consolidation of brotherhood and peace, of interreligious dialogue and friendship.''Francis’ references to interreligious dialogue and friendship were spontaneous. With the exception of his short visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, which lasted just a few hours, the Pope has chosen to begin his European visits starting from the peripheries and especially the parts of the Old Continent that are home to Christians of different denominations, Muslims and Jews. Sarajevo has always been a multi-ethnic and multireligious city. It suffered under the Bosnian Serb siege that lasted over three years. And relations between the various ethnic and religious communities were marred as a result.The Pope’s visit to Sarajevo is “good news”, said the Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, “and the words he added off the cuff about interreligious dialogue and friendship are important. The Pope continues his European travels starting from the “peripheries”, that is countries where Catholics are a minority,” the Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi said.“We are very happy about this news of the Papal visit to Sarajevo and everyone is awaiting,” Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia-Herzegovina, told Vatican Radio. “There have already been some reactions to the news: we have been expecting this visit for some time now and we are sure it will do a great deal of good and not just to Catholics, because Sarajevo is not only a cultural but also a religious crossroads, home to different Christian denominations and religions.” “We must pray a lot for this visit to bring many fruits both for the local Church, the Catholic Church, and for society as a whole; so on a cultural and a religious level, so that we can really move toward a climate of peaceful coexistence. This process has already been set in motion, but needs to mature and must be seen through to the end,” the Nuncio said.

vatican city-Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi’s Pontifical Council for Culture has dedicated its upcoming Plenary Assembly to “Women's cultures: equality and difference”. The assembly, which will be taking place between 4 and 7 February, was presented at a press conference in the Vatican today. The themes listed in the preparatory document include: aggression against women, the role of women in the Church and plastic surgery as a “burka made of flesh”. A promotional video clip featuring Italian actress Nancy Brilli who is the face of the event, attracted both praise and criticism in the English-speaking world.“The expression “women’s cultures” does not imply any division from men’s cultures, but shows our awareness that there is a women’s “perspective” on the world and all that surrounds us, on life and on experience,” the “outline document” for the plenary assembly - published on the Vatican dicastery’s website www.cultura.va – reads. The text was “composed by a group of women in the light of pastoral considerations sent in by [the] Members and Consultors” of the Pontifical Council. The document presents four themes: “Between equality and difference: the quest for an equilibrium”, “‘Generativity’ as a symbolic code”, “The female body: between culture and biology” (in this section the text mentions the issue of domestic violence, plastic surgery as a “burqa made of flesh” and how to avoid a purely functional approach to women and their bodies (seductive, metrification, marketing)?) and “Women and religion: flight or new forms of participation in the life of the Church?” (“What spaces are proposed to women in the life of the Church?”). The Pontifical Council headed by Ravasi will introduce the Plenary Assembly at Teatro Argentina in Rome, on 4 February at 3.30 pm.“Women do not want to be cardinals, they simply want to be a part of this completely new attitude of openness adopted by [Pope Francis’] Church,” Nancy Brilli said at the press conference. The Italian actress features in a promotional video clip which the dicastery published on its website some weeks ago. Quoting the hashtag #LifeofWomen, the actress says: “At what point are we today as women? I am sure you have asked yourselves many times, who you are, what you do, what you think about your being a woman, your strengths, your difficulties, your body and your spiritual life. If you want to, you can share your vision.” The English version of the video was pulled due to “split reactions” in particular from the US, Canada and Australia, Ravasi told journalists. Conservatives saw it as “too progressivist”, while progressivists found it too “negative”. Reactions to his initiatives have always been like this: enthusiasts on the one hand and on the other those who even saw satanic aspects…” “You can never remove anything from the internet, the video’s out there.” Nancy Brilli added. “The growth in plastic surgery as a result of the desire to adhere to an extrinsic model – I am thinking of those 18 year olds who ask for breast augmentation as their birthday present – is shocking,” Cardinal Ravasi said. He then went on to speak about the question of “transhumanism” raised by neuroscience and as a result of the evolution in sports science. “Being married to a plastic surgeon whose work is focused mainly on post-cancer reconstructive plastic surgery, I am very much involved. The expression “new burqa” refers to the fact that women very often try to conform in order to be accepted. But if a woman changes the body she is born with because she does not feel at ease with herself, I don’t see why she should be criticised for this.”Cardinal Ravasi announced that a permanent panel of female consultants will be created in the Pontifical Council for Culture, to look at the question of the female approach in greater depth. The group will have a limited number of members with a variety of skills, who will be predominantly but not exclusively Italian.

vatican city-In the Vatican the list of crimes is getting longer. Investigators have made two arrests for possession of pornographic material related to children, one involves former Polish Nuncio Jozef Wesolowski who has already been convicted for child abuse. The Vatican judiciary has guaranteed that the facts will be examined with the “utmost rigour”. The financial crimes committed are pretty serious too (two IOR bank accounts were seized and 200 positions were reviewed in 2014), in particular a conviction for “aggravated fraud”. There have even been attempts to involve the Vatican in “the global trafficking of narcotic substances”. This is the general picture painted by the Vatican Tribunal’s Promoter of Justice, Gian Pietro Milano during the opening of the judicial year of the pontifical State today. He also informed that an “administrator” has been found for the Emanuela Orlandi case (Emanuela Orlandi was a citizen of Vatican City who mysteriously disappeared on 22 June 1983, Ed.). He lamented Italy’s feeble collaboration on the Nunzio Scarano case. Mgr. Scarano is a former employee of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, who was arrested in Italy on charges of fraud.“The Vatican City State,” Milano said, “has gone from being a small Italian “enclave” to an active member of an international community that is becoming increasingly global not just in terms of customs but unfortunately also in terms of criminal activity, which, as His Holiness Pope Francis highlighted during his visit to Assisi in 2013, is the cancer of society. The Holy See, in tune with its nature and mission, joins in the efforts of the international community to protect and promote legality in general and especially the integrity, stability and transparency of the economic and financial sectors and the prevention and fight against criminal activities; its judicial system was modified in order to achieve this. The result was rigorous modernisation of the legal fabric which was achieved without relinquishing the primacy principle of Canon Law and the penal system of the Vatican City State can be considered one of the most comprehensive systems of today,” Milan stressed. He said the Vatican in fact has a far more detailed money-laundering law than the one recently adopted by the Italian justice system. And a cutting edge confiscatory regime. Following reforms set in motion under Benedict XVI’s pontificate, the year that has just gone by, “was marked by a widespread effort to enact the legislation reforms Pope Francis had called for in 2013.”“Unfortunately,” statistically the overall picture seems to show a “rise in crimes” Milano said. Without giving away names, he went on to say that in the year that has just passed, his office ordered six arrests, “which shows a marked and worrying statistical increase compared to previous years.” Three of these arrests were well known: the entrepreneur Marcello Di Finizio from Trieste, who spent a dozen or so days in prison during the Christmas period for repeated attempts to climb St. Peter’s dome; a member of the Femen group who staged a bare-breasted protest in front of the Nativity Scene in St. Peter’s Square on the Feast of St. Stephen; and Jozef Wesolowski, former Nuncio to the Dominican Republic. The Vatican’s “attorney general” dedicated a number of paragraphs in his report to the case, without specifically mentioning Wesolowski’s name. He underlined that “investigators are working independently, free from any interference and their work aims to provide a rigorous examination of the facts, their basis and evidence”. He explained why the Polish prelate was tried (and sentenced) by the tribunal on the basis of his status civitatis and by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the basis of his clerical status. The Vatican “attorney general” recalled that Wesolowski appealed his sentence. Aside from Wesolowski, the Vatican police also investigated another case of possession of pornographic materials related to children. Last year a total of 62 rulings were made on criminal cases, which include simple cases of pickpocketing and theft at St. Peter’s. Regarding financial crimes, the Promoter of Justice - without providing any further details – mentioned legal action taken against a “cathedral chapter” which was reported by an “eminent ecclesiastical figure”, which concluded in a four-year prison sentence for “aggravated fraud” including payment of damages and court fees. In 2014, the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) reported five cases of suspicious operations to the Promoter of Justice; the Office is looking into three of these. In two of the cases bank accounts held with the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) were seized. Again, no reference was made to specific cases such as the one involving the former president of the IOR, Angelo Caloia. Last year, the FIA examined 200 positions in total. The Vatican police seized documents relating to active or former accounts held with the Institute for the Works of Religion.The Promoter of Justice, Milano, went on to say that international drug trafficking “unfortunately did not leave out small State unscathed. There have been isolated – but immediately thwarted – attempts by traffickers without scruples, employing unusual methods.” Milano then mentioned “three shipments” made from foreign States to the Vatican and said these are being monitored by the Vatican police. He lamented the failure of a multinational police operation after a foreign newspaper unexpectedly published the news so no one turned up to pick up the package containing the drugs.The Promoter of Justice stressed that the Vatican still believes in an active and loyal collaboration with other States in order to combat criminal activity in the financial sector, reporting that the Vatican received ten letters rogatory in 2014, eight of them from Italy. The Papal State rejected one Italian request (the Vatican Tribunal was already in the process of confiscating bank deposits) and two foreign requests which probably came from the Dominical Republic in relation to the Wesolowski case. In these cases too, the Vatican rejected the requests because it had already begun criminal proceedings. In what appeared to be a reference to the Nunzio Scarano case, Milano then lamented Italy’s response to the Vatican’s request for financial information on accounts held by a cleric indicted in Italy for a series of crimes (fraud, money-laundering and corruption) and under investigation in the Vatican as well. The Vatican had also asked for information relating to the investigations and interrogations carried out in Italy. Not only was the material Italy sent incomplete but it also included evidence that was obtained using “improper” means that were “not in line with current international protocols”.When he moved onto the civil sector, Gian Piero Milano made a clear reference to Emanuela Orlandi, the Vatican citizen who disappeared in the 1980’s, in what remains a “delicate and largely unresolved case, which over the years has attracted the attention of the mass media and public opinion regarding the perplexing circumstances in which it occurred and the touching effects it had on those who knew and were close to the victim.” Milano announced that the Tribunal had appointed an “administrator” to handle the case. In terms of proposals for the future, Milano suggested introducing usury - which could lead to money-laundering - as a crime. According to the Promoter of Justice, tapping is still a “vital” instrument in investigations. The opening of the Judicial Year was marked with a mass celebrated by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
