QZ8501: Divers may have found crashed AirAsia co-pilot's body-AFP | Updated: February 07, 2015-ASTRO AWANI

JAKARTA: Indonesian divers have found a body believed to be the French co-pilot who was steering an AirAsia plane when it crashed in December with 162 people onboard, an official said Saturday.
Coordinator of the search and rescue effort S.B. Supriyadi said the body was retrieved from the front part of the fuselage during a search operation on Friday."It is likely the body of the French co-pilot, wearing uniform with three stripes on (the) shoulder," he told AFP, adding that the body is still being held on-board the Pacitan warship before being taken to land.A formal confirmation will be given after the Disaster Victims Identification (DVI) team finish identifying the body, which is in poor condition, Supriyadi said.Indonesian investigators last month said French co-pilot Remi Plesel was flying the plane before it crashed, rather than Captain Iriyanto, an experienced former fighter pilot.Flight QZ8501 went down in stormy weather on December 28 in the Java sea during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.Divers also found three bodies inside the main body of the plane on Friday and another three bodies near the fuselage today, bringing a total number of dead retrieved to 101, Supriyadi said.Rescue services are still trying to lift the fuselage from the seabed using giant inflatable bags after earlier attempts failed.

MH370: Family members to seek answers from MAS before CNY-Bernama | Updated: February 07, 2015-ASTRO AWANI

BEIJING: Several Chinese families of passengers who were on board missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 are expected to fly to Malaysia to seek answers from MAS before Feb 19, the first day of the Chinese New Year. The families want to seek answers from MAS on the fate of MH370, said Jiang Hui, whose mother was on board the flight.“Around 20-30 next-of-kin will be flying to Malaysia, and some of us are still waiting for our visa applications to be approved,” he told Bernama. Most of the families of the affected passengers have rejected the official declaration that the disappearance of MH370 was an accident and had demanded the statement be retracted. The Department of Civil Aviation on Jan 29 announced Flight MH370 was officially declared an accident under international aviation rules, and that all 239 passengers and crew were presumed to have lost their lives.MH370 went missing enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 last year. The Boeing 777-200ER carrying 239 passengers, mostly Chinese, and crew, was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6.30am. Its flight path was believed to have ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

Singapore plans 'real-time' aircraft tracking system-AFP | Updated: February 05, 2015-ASTRO AWANI

SINGAPORE: Singapore said Thursday it will introduce a new aircraft tracking system that will ensure complete surveillance of its airspace, amid global efforts to prevent a repeat of Flight MH370's inexplicable disappearance. The automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system will be deployed in the city-state's airspace and uses satellites to monitor all flights in real-time, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said in a joint statement with US-partner Aireon LLC.The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing has prompted an industry-wide rethink of the way planes are tracked. The aircraft, with 239 people on board, has never been found and is ones of aviation's greatest mysteries. On Wednesday, an international aviation summit in Montreal gave strong backing to plans to monitor flights in distress in real-time, making it easier to pinpoint the location of planes lost at sea.Under the new rules, airlines will also be required to track their aircraft using a system that gives its location at 15-minute intervals. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council is expected to ratify the proposal in November, making it obligatory for all airlines from 2016.At the moment, the radars that track planes give spotty coverage that fades when an aircraft is far out or flying below a certain altitude."Currently, some parts of the Singapore flight information region are not under surveillance coverage, such as remote areas and over the oceans," said the joint statement by CAAS and Aireon LLC."With the deployment of this space-based ADS-B service, the real-time positions and en-route status information of all ADS-B equipped aircraft flying within the Singapore flight information region can be tracked."Singapore Airlines said separately on Monday it was working with SITA, a company that specialises in air transport communications, on trials related to aircraft tracking but would not give further details.
