ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11 In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
12 Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations,(USELESS U.N) that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14 And behold at evening tide trouble; and before the morning he is not.(ASSAD KILLED IN OVERNIGHT RAID) This is the portion of them that spoil us,(ISRAEL) and the lot of them that rob us.
Hezbollah Fires Antitank Missile at IDF Vehicle Near Border-Mortar shells fired at IDF outposts and a missile shot at an IDF vehicle, in escalation. There are casualties and the IDF is firing back.By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 11:31 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
An antitank missile has been fired at an IDF vehicle from the Har Dov area (Shebaa Farms) in a Hezbollah ambush Wednesday morning,Six casualties in light to moderate condition have been taken to Ziv Hospital in Tzfat. Additional casualties were evacuated to Rambam Hospital. The IDF is certain that none of its soldiers was abducted.Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack, initially through journalist Rassan Ben Jiddo, who is close to the terrorist militia. The terror militia issued an announcement shortly after 1:00 p.m., in which it said that a squad named for "the Martyrs of Quneitra" fired at an IDF convoy at 11:35 and caused casualties. The announcement was presented as "Announcement Number 1," in a hint that additional operations could follow this attack. As of 1:30 p.m., exchanges of fire between the IDF and Hezbollah were ongoing.ZAKA emergency services initially said that three people were hurt. The IDF spokesman said that an antitank missile was fired at an IDF vehicle that was moving along the border. Channel 2 said there was also mortar fire at IDF outposts.Speaking on Channel 2, Col. (res.) Kobi Marom called the incident "very serious" and said that it involved casualties and will require a harsh Israeli response. In an initial reaction, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who was in Sderot, said: "Anyone who tries to challenge us in the north should look at what happened to Hamas, not far from here, which was recently dealt the hardest blow it has received since its creation."Residents of Metula were initially told to stay inside their homes but were later given the all clear. The IDF has been firing at several targets in Lebanon in retaliation, since the incident began.
Digging for tunnels
Meanwhile, The IDF has begun digging into the soil along Israels border with Lebanon, in search of attack tunnels that may have been dug by Hezbollah terrorists into Israeli territory.Kol Yisrael Radio reported Wednesday that a drill was brought to a location near Zar'it and that it has begun to bore into the ground, in search of tunnels. The military said that it does not have any information indicating that Hezbollah has, indeed, dug tunnels into Israel, and that the move is mainly being carried out to allay the fears of local residents, who have been reporting for years that they hear digging sounds from the ground at night.A senior IDF source said that while there is no intelligence regarding an intent by Hezbollah to use tunnels in an attack on Israel, the military “would rather not take chances.”The drilling comes as preparation is high on the northern border, after Hezbollah fired rockets on Israel on Tuesday prompting an Israeli response. That exchange followed a reportedly Israeli strike on senior Hezbollah terrorists and an Iranian general last Sunday, who were apparently planning an attack on Israel.Residents along the border have also been pointing to suspicious sights and actions beyond the border fence which they believe indicate the digging of tunnels. Recently, they have been saying that they will hire equipment at their own expense to look for tunnels, if the IDF does not do so itself. When asked about the digging noises earlier this month, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) claimed "no tunnels have been located on the northern border. Noises that were heard beneath a home turned out to be a neighbor's horse stomping with its hooves."But a video posted on YouTube recently, said to have been filmed at night in Shtula on the border with Lebanon, had many seriously doubting Ya'alon's claims.Highlighting fears for many is the fact that the government was initially unwilling to destroy Hamas's terror tunnels at the outset of the fighting in Gaza earlier this year. The IDF only took action against the tunnels after several of them were used with lethal effect by Hamas, and after IDF surveillance footage showed large terrorist squads emerging from holes in the ground in Israeli territory. After the war, the government admitted that Hamas planned to use the tunnels for a deadly attack that it planned for Rosh Hashana. Jewish Home head Naftali Bennett has claimed to have prodded the government into launching the ground offensive against the tunnels, claims which independent investigative reports supported.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that Operation Protective Edge “damaged a strategic array that Hamas put a huge effort into, for years. The ability that Hamas prepared in digging these tunnels would have enabled it to abduct and murder numerous citizens and IDF soldiers by a simultaneous attack from many tunnels that penetrate our territory."
Netanyahu Warns Hezbollah 'Look What Happened to Hamas'-Netanyahu holds emergency meeting over Hezbollah attack on Har Dov, as airports and sites close in north.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:43 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the Hezbollah attack on Har Dov in the Golan Heights on Wednesday, in which seven Israelis were reportedly wounded following anti-tank, rocket and mortar fire.As the fighting blazed on, Netanyahu said during a visit in the southern city of Sderot "in these moments the IDF is responding to the incidents in the north.""To all those trying to challenge us on the northern border, I suggest looking at what happened here, not far from the city of Sderot, in the Gaza strip," he added, referring to Operation Protective Edge last summer that was launched in response to a Hamas missile escalation. The prime minister concluded "Hamas absorbed the hardest blow since it was founded last summer, and the IDF is ready to act with force on any front."Netanyahu cut short his visit to Sderot to hold an emergency meeting in Tel Aviv, where the Defense Ministry headquarters are located. In response to the ongoing firefight in Har Dov, the domestic airports in Rosh Pina and Haifa were closed on Wednesday to avoid conflict with the heavy ongoing IAF aerial operations.Likewise the Mount Hermon site, Israel's sole skiing spot, was evacuated, as were several nature reserves in the area. Several roads liable to come under fire were also closed.Al Arabiya reported that Lebanese schools on the border had also been evacuated, possibly indicating intentions to further escalate from the Lebanese side.Reports had aired earlier over the possibile abduction of a soldier, but those reports were later ruled out.Iran-proxy Hezbollah fired rockets on Israel on Tuesday afternoon prompting an Israeli response. That exchange followed a reportedly Israeli strike on senior Hezbollah terrorists and an Iranian general last Sunday, who were apparently planning an attack on Israel. Hezbollah had threatened a response after the strike.
Angry Gazans Try to Storm UN Headquarters-After UN says it can't pay to repair for Hamas's war because world donors didn't deliver, protest in front of HQ turns violent.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 1:16 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Hundreds of protesters on Wednesday tried to storm the Gaza headquarters of the United Nations, an AFP correspondent said, after the UN announced it lacked funds to rebuild the enclave from the damage caused by Hamas's most recent terror war against Israel.Around 200 people demonstrated outside the building in Gaza City of UNRWA, burning tires and throwing rocks, while shouting "we are still homeless!"As the riot continued to turn violent, some tried to storm the building before police of the Hamas terrorist organization that rules Gaza, broke up the demonstration. The incident came a day after UNRWA announced it can not afford to repair tens of thousands of homes damaged during the July-August war between Israel and Hamas because donors have failed to pay."$5.4 billion was pledged at the Cairo (aid) conference last October and virtually none of it has reached Gaza. This is distressing and unacceptable. It is unclear why this funding has not been forthcoming," said UNRWA.UNRWA said cutting subsidies to displaced residents now renting alternative accommodation could force large numbers back to UN schools and centers which are already sheltering 12,000 people. The reconstruction has barely begun, not only because world nations have not delivered, but also because construction materials allowed in by Israel have been used by Hamas to rebuild terror tunnels into Israel meant to attack civilians, leading Israel to limit the transfers.Earlier this month Hamas threatened the world, demanding that it pay to rebuild Hamas's stronghold of Gaza, or else face the region "becoming" a hotbed for extremism and terrorism.
IDF Attacks Syrian Artillery in Retaliation for Rocket Attacks-IDF attacks artillery targets belonging to the Syrian army, in retaliation for earlier rocket attacks on the Golan region.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:53 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The IDF on Tuesday night attacked artillery targets belonging to the Syrian army, in retaliation for rocket attacks earlier on Tuesday towards the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon."[The rocket fire] was a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Israel," the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement, noting that direct hits at the targets were identified.“The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for what occurs in its territory, and will work at any time and in any way it sees fit to protect the citizens of Israel,” the statement noted.Meanwhile, residents of the northern Golan Heights reported shortly after midnight that sirens had been sounded throughout the area, including in Majdal Shams, Odem, El-ron, Buq'ata, Masade, Neve Ativ and Nimrod. However, no rockets or mortar shells were found to have landed in Israeli territory, and the IDF said it remains unclear why the sirens went off.In the attack earlier Tuesday afternoon, the IDF confirmed that two rockets had been fired at Israel.IDF spokesman Peter Lerner said in a text message the Syrian fire was "intentional, not spillover from the Syrian civil war".IDF forces returned fire. The IDF Spokesperson's Office confirmed at 2:00 p.m. that it had successfully struck the source of the rocket fire. The rocket fire follows reports aired less than 24 hours ago that the IDF has been building trenches along the Syrian border ahead of possible escalation with any number of rebel groups and outposts which pose a threat against Israel.Northern residents and the IDF have been on high alert throughout the week, after an IAF airstrike in the Syrian Golan Heights killed a senior Hezbollah commander and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards general last Sunday, along with several other Hezbollah and Iranian fighters.Hezbollah responded by vowing an attack on Israel, but made clear it does not want another full-scale war.

Iranian Official Calls to 'Wipe Out the Zionist Regime'-A senior Iranian general says last week's airstrike in Syria "will accelerate the collapse of the Zionist regime".-By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 1/27/2015, 6:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Iran is continuing to threaten to retaliate against Israel for an airstrike last week, in which Iran's General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was killed. On Monday, a senior official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, General Ramezan Sharif, declared that the airstrike “will accelerate the collapse of the Zionist regime.”“Undoubtedly, the bloods shed in the front of awakening the Islamic Ummah have provided the ground more than ever for wiping out the Zionist regime,” Sharif said in Tehran, according to the Fars news agency. He called on Muslim states to unite and said that the Islamic countries should desist from provoking rifts and use all their capacities to fight “the child-killing Zionist regime” instead.Another Iranian official, General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, said that the airstrike justified “striking painful blows at the Zionist regime.”Naqdi warned “the Zionists” that they would soon be forced to leave “the occupied Palestinian territories”, and added, according to Fars, "They will not experience tranquility, these bloods will not remain without a response and they should remain fully alerted until complete annihilation of the Zionist regime."In the airstrike, six Iran-proxy Hezbollah terrorists were killed, including Jihad Mughniyeh who was the son of the late Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh. Six Iranian soldiers were also killed, including Allahdadi.Reportedly the 12 were engaged in a surveillance mission planning an attack on Israel from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights when they were taken out by a missile fired from an IDF helicopter.Monday’s threats are the latest in a series of threats from Iranian officials over the airstrike. Several days ago, General Hossein Salami, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards, threatened a missile attack on Israel, indicating it would come from Judea and Samaria and not from Lebanon.Going further, Revolutionary Guards Minister Mohsen Rafighdoost said last Wednesday that the strike would pave the way for a war against Israel. As well, a Farsi-language Iranian news site affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, has suggested that the sons of Israeli leaders are being targeted as a response to the Israeli airstrike. The news site, Mashregh News, detailed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's sons Yair and Avner may be targeted, and likewise listed the sons of former prime ministers, including Ehud Olmert's son Shaul and Ariel Sharon's sons Gilad and Omri.

Yishai Collapses Otzma Yehudit Talks by Banning Temple Mount-In shocking last minute demands, Yishai's party demands Otzma Yehudit enter coalition at cost of ideology for yeshiva budgets.By Ido Ben-Porat, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:14 AM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS
After weeks of tension and public calls for former MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari's Otzma Yehudit and MK Eli Yishai's Yachad - Ha'am Itanu to run on a technical bloc joint list, negotiations have fallen through after Yishai's party made surprising last minute demands on Ben-Ari.The two parties were in zero hour talks on Tuesday night ahead of a Thursday deadline to submit a joint list, when Yishai made an odd offer giving nationalist activist Baruch Marzel the fourth spot instead of Ben-Ari, who would get the sixth spot. But that apparently isn't what caused the talks to break down - instead, it was that Yishai and his associates MK Yoni Chetboun and Rabbi Moshe Hager demanded that Otzma Yehudit members obligate themselves, and announce to the media, that they will permanently not ascend to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. The demand raised anger, given that Otzma Yehudit has asked for Jewish prayer rights on the Mount, where the Jordanian Waqf enjoys de facto rule and has forbidden Jewish prayer, to be a key platform plank. Furthermore, Yishai's rabbinic counsel Rabbi Meir Mazuz has ruled in support of visiting the Temple Mount.A source in Otzma Yehudit revealed that another demand was made by Yishai's party, forcing Otzma Yehudit to join a coalition formed by Likud head Binyamin Netanyahu "at any price," so as not to harm the budgets transferred to the institutions of Rabbi Tzvi Tau, head of Yeshivat Har Hamor and a key factor in bringing Chetboun in with Yishai. This second request is particularly baffling given that the technical bloc paradigm by which the two were to jointly run would allow them to separate after elections, with both parties keeping their seats and Yishai likely joining Netanyahu while Ben-Ari would be in the opposition. Ben-Ari has made clear that he would not join any coalition unless firm ideological red lines were set, such as not releasing terrorists, not freezing construction, not holding negotiations with the Palestinian Authority (PA), and not letting Hamas survive another operation - all of which the outgoing coalition did."You must not compromise on the Temple Mount"The Otzma Yehudit source revealed that Ben-Ari's party agreed to Yishai's unusual request to have Marzel in the fourth spot instead of Ben-Ari, but a moment before the two sides signed on a joint list, the demands to not visit the Temple Mount and to sit in a Netanyahu coalition at any price came up.The leaders of Otzma Yehudit counseled with Rabbi Dov Lior, chief rabbi of Hevron - Kiryat Arba, who ordered them not to agree to the surprising demands."You must not compromise on matters of the land of Israel and the Temple Mount," stated the rabbi. "Emphasis can be made on different points, but not on a condition that forbids ascending to the Mount forever, or to receive money for institutions and support Bibi (Netanyahu) at any price."Following the impasse, Ben-Ari announced "we have a very clear statement - we want all of the land of Israel and definitely we will not give up on the Temple Mount. We were ready for a softened phrasing by which during the period of unity we wouldn't ascend the Temple Mount, but they want humiliation here, and to kick us out, and it seems they are succeeding.""We are currently weighing our steps, it is likely that we will submit our list - we can't give up on our ideology, not even so as to be in the Knesset; we are in the Knesset for ideology," explained Ben-Ari.Running together, polls showed the two parties would comfortably enter with seven seats, although separately polls indicate they both are liable not to pass the threshold that was raised by the outgoing government.

Netanyahu: The World is Still Anti-Semitic - Jews Have Changed-In speech for Holocaust Memorial Day, PM says anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism, vows to stop Iranian threat of nuclear annihilation.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/27/2015, 10:03 PM- ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem on Tuesday, marking International Holocaust Memorial Day and the liberation of Auschwitz."My responsibility as Prime Minister of Israel is to ensure that the State of Israel will never again be threatened with destruction," began Netanyahu. "My responsibility is to see to it that there will not be a reason to build additional memorial sites such as Yad Vashem."Turning to the threat of nuclear annihilation from the Islamic regime in Iran, Netanyahu said "the pending agreement with Iran is an agreement that endangers the State of Israel. It leaves Iran with the capabilities that will allow it to arm itself with nuclear weapons, one bomb at first and afterwards many atomic bombs.""Even those who try to challenge us within our borders will discover that we are ready to respond with force. Israel views with utmost gravity the attack against it from Syrian territory. Those who play with fire will get burned," he warned.Seventy years from Auschwitz, Netanyahu stated "preserving the memory of the Holocaust is more important today than ever before. We live in an age of resurgent and violent anti-Semitism, and commemorations like this ceremony remind us where humanity's oldest and most enduring hatred can lead.""Hatred of the Jews...has now returned in full force," emphasized the prime minister. "Around the world, Jewish communities are increasingly living in fear. But it’s not just the Jewish people that is being slandered, vilified and targeted. It’s the Jewish state as well."Netanyahu noted that Hamas's very charter calls for the genocide of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish state, portraying Israel "as the embodiment of all evil in the world" as was done by anti-Semites against individual Jews before the foundation of the modern Jewish state."And what do the so-called ‘enlightened’ organs of the international community do in response?" asked the prime minister. Answering his own question, he listed the various atrocities being committed in the Middle East, and noted that the Geneva Convention members, UN Human Rights Council and International Criminal Court (ICC) meet precisely to condemn Israel."No rational examination of the facts could justify this assault on Israel, the Middle East’s only democracy, the most beleaguered democracy on earth," he said. "This obsession with the Jewish people and their state has a name. It's called anti-Semitism."
"We will defend ourselves against Iran"
While the hatred of Jews may not have changed, "the Jews have changed," said Netanyahu. "We are no longer a stateless people endlessly searching for a safe haven. ...Today we are an independent and sovereign people in our ancestral homeland."Netanyahu went on to emphasize that while "the Jewish people will defend itself by itself against any threat," it is appreciative of support from friends around the world, particularly from the United States, "our great ally."But after mentioning the dangers of Iran, he reiterated "it is the Government of Israel that holds the ultimate responsibility for the security of the one and only Jewish state. ...Israel will reject any agreement that leaves Iran as a nuclear threshold state. Regrettably, our understanding is that the offer made by the P5+1 (world powers - etc.) does exactly that."Not only would such an agreement threaten Israel with a nuclear-armed foe bent on its destruction, but it "is sure to spark a nuclear arms race in the region that would turn the Middle East into a nuclear tinderbox," he added."On this day of Holocaust remembrance, I pledge to you what we could neither say nor do 70 years ago," concluded Netanyahu. "Israel will always do what needs to be done to ensure the security of the Jewish people and the one and only Jewish state. That is the significance of this day."
01/27/2015 -VATICAN INSIDER-“Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering”-Auschwitz-Birkenau-Francis wrote this in a tweet sent on Holocaust Remembrance Day. At a service held in memory of the victims, the Archbishop of Krakow, Stanislaw Dziwisz, said their cries were stifled by terrible violence-vatican insider staff
rome-“The cries of victims were stifled by terrible violence,” the Archbishop of Krakow Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz recalled during the liturgy celebrated in memory of the those who lost their lives in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, 70 years after the Red Army liberated the concentration camp in their advance toward Berlin. The UN introduced the International Holocaust Remembrance Day of 27 January - this was the day the Nazi concentration camp was liberated in 1945 – in 2005.A part from Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and government representatives from over 40 countries, today’s liturgy was also attended by a group of 300 survivors of the extermination plan that cost more than 1,200,000 people their lives, 90% of them Jewish.SIR, the news agency of the Italian Episcopal Conference, informs that the celebration was followed by a moment of interreligious and ecumenical prayer which concluded with candles being lit at the spot where prisoners were executed by the Nazis. Manfred Deselaers, a German priest who has been working at the Centre for Dialogue and Prayer since 1995 near the camp, recalled the words pronounced by Benedict XVI during his visit to Auschwitz: “There is hope that this place of horror will gradually become a place for constructive thinking, and that remembrance will foster resistance to evil and the triumph of love.”Francis marked today’s occasion by making his own voice heard via Twitter: “Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering and pleads for a future of respect, peace and encounter among peoples.”Mieczyslaw Cislo, President of the Council for Inter-religious Dialogue of the Polish Bishops' Conference, invited “all people of good will” to take part in the initiative “Flame of Memory”. On Remembrance Day, at 6 pm, people across Poland will place lit candles at their windows in remembrance of the Holocaust victims. “Lighting a candle, the prelate explains, is a sign of solidarity with the people of Israel and our elder brothers in the faith who are mourning the victims of Nazism,” the prelate explained. According to the Shalom Foundation, which is promoting the event, “although we cannot bring back the world destroyed in the Shoah, it is our duty to preserve its memory as a warning to future generations, and as part of the common heritage of Poles and Jews”.

Greece says No to EU statement on Russia By Andrew Rettman-BRUSSELS, Today, 18:52-JAN 27,15-EUOBSERVER
The new far-left government in Greece dropped a bombshell on its first day in office by abjuring an EU statement on Russia. It said in a press communique on Tuesday (27 January): “the aforementioned statement was released without the prescribed procedure to obtain consent by the member states and particularly without ensuring the consent of Greece”.“In this context, it is underlined that Greece does not consent to this statement”.It added that its new PM, Alexis Tsipras, expressed “discontent” in a phone call to EU foreign relations chief Federica Mogherini. The EU statement on Russia, published on Tuesday morning, claimed all 28 leaders had agreed Russia bears “responsibility” for a rocket attack on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which killed 30 people. It also called on foreign ministers to “consider any appropriate action” - further sanctions on Russia. It was drafted by the cabinet of EU Council chief Donald Tusk, a Russia-critical Pole, on Monday evening. His people say he phoned Tsipras and that they contacted all the capitals' “sherpas” - senior officials dealing with EU issues in each leader's private office. They also say no one on the Greek side voiced objections until Monday morning. They then suggested adding a footnote to the statement, but “as Greece did not want such a footnote, it was clear to us that we could publish the statement as agreed in the evening”.For its part, the Greek embassy to the EU is playing down the fiasco as confusion linked to the hand-over of power in Athens. But one EU diplomat told this website Greece had tried to remove the line blaming Russia for the Mariupol killing. He said Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia also tried, and failed, to “water down” the communique.Meanwhile, an EU Council official said the situation - a retroactive abjuration of an EU line - has “never happened before”.“I guess this means it’s now a statement of 27 EU heads of state or government instead of 28 and we will have to add the footnote”, he said.“But it’s not a legally binding document anyway, so it doesn’t become invalid in that sense”.
Fellow traveller?
Tsipras had earlier attracted comment for meeting with the Russian ambassador to Greece on Monday, just a few hours after being named PM.The diplomat hand-delivered a telegram from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying Putin “is confident that Russia and Greece will continue to develop their traditionally constructive co-operation in all areas”.It is normal protocol, with China following suit on Tuesday. But the EU bombshell and the Russian meeting come in the context of Tsipras’ pro-Russia track record. He visited Moscow last May to meet with Russian MPs and Putin associates. He voiced support, at the time, for Crimea’s “referendum” on independence. He said the EU “is shooting itself in the foot” by imposing sanctions and complained that the pro-EU government in Kiev contains “neo-Nazis”.His MEPs have also voted against almost every Russia-critical act or resolution in the European Parliament. The list includes EP ratification of the EU-Ukraine association pact, criticism of Russia’s crackdown on Memorial (an NGO), and criticism of the annexation of Crimea.

EU finance chiefs will this week digest Syriza’s victory in Greece, while top diplomats attend an emergency meeting on Ukraine. The 19 eurozone ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday (26 January) and are joined by the rest of their EU peers on Tuesday. The victory by the far-left party comes amid talks on whether to extend Greece’s bailout programme beyond 28 February to keep international aid flowing.Syriza had earlier threatened to tear up the bailout contract and call for a debt amnesty, raising fears that Greece will leave the single currency. Its leader, Alexis Tsipras, moderated his position in the run-up to the vote, indicating he might settle for softer terms on debt repayment instead. But his big win will send a political shockwave through the EU, emboldening other far-left parties, such as Podemos in Spain. It will also see the European Commission make way for its first far-left member, with the current Greek commissioner tipped to run for the Greek presidency.
Mariupol attack
Russia’s new offensive in south-east Ukraine will see EU foreign ministers hold a snap meeting on Thursday. German chancellor Angela Merkel called Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Sunday to urge “de-escalation”. France’s Francois Hollande also voiced “grave concern” and said he would try to “calm the situation”.Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, and the US have already called for extra sanctions.Meanwhile, Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja likened the behaviour of Russia-controlled forces to the Milosevic regime in former Yugoslavia. He said their attack on Mariupol, in south-east Ukraine, in which they fired rockets at a residential area, reminded him of a mortar attack by Serb forces on Sarajevo in 1994.EU agriculture ministers will on Monday also discuss Russia’s ban on EU food exports. The commission, earlier this month, agreed to let Russia choose which countries can resume exports based on Russian health inspections. The deal has raised alarm Russia will use it to divide the EU by rewarding doves and punishing hawks.
Hebdo fall-out
For their part, EU interior ministers will, at an informal meeting on Thursday, discuss security reforms in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.Ideas - to be taken forward at a summit in February - include criminalising “foreign fighters”, clamping down on Internet radicalisation, getting EU airlines to share data on passengers, and tightening up Schengen passport-free travel rules.Finance will also top the agenda in the European Parliament.Jyrki Katainen - the man in charge of the commission’s €315 billion investment fund - will explain latest thinking on the project to MEPs on the economic affairs committee on Monday. The finance ministers of Germany and Italy will on Tuesday tell the committee if they see room for flexibility in EU debt and deficit rules.EU energy commissioner Maros Sefcovic will brief deputies on the industry and environmental committees on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, on plans to reduce EU gas dependence on Russia.Amid the Greek drama, ECB chief Mario Draghi will also be in the EU capital on Monday to meet competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager. Her spokeswoman told EUobserver "they will discuss the broader perspectives - the economic situation in the EU and how to increase the competitiveness of the European economy”.
Auschwitz
Elsewhere in Europe, a handful of VIPs will on Monday go to a WWII memorial in the Czech Republic.
A bigger turnout is expected for Poland’s 70th anniversary on Tuesday of the liberation of Nazi Germany’s Auschwitz death camp. The Auschwitz event has been marked by Putin’s decision to stay away even though he was invited in the same way as other guests.Polish authorities told EUobserver they sent a note to the Russian embassy in Warsaw asking it to send a delegate "at the highest level". Putin's spokesman later said he isn't going because he didn't get a "personal" invitation.

01/27/2015-VATICAN INSIDER-“May parishes become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference”-A homeless person-The Vatican has released the Pope’s annual message for Lent. Regarding Curia reform, Dal Toso of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum”, said a greater impetus will be given to charity-Iacopo scaramuzzi
vatican city-“How greatly I desire that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!” This was the wish expressed by Pope Francis in his annual message for Lent (from 22 February to Easter Sunday on 5 April) which centres on a subject that is very dear to him: overcoming the “globalisation of indifference”.God “is not aloof from us”, Jorge Mario Bergoglio writes in the message signed last 4 October on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and presented today in the Vatican. “Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us. Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure… Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which God comes into the world and the world comes to him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded.” “Indifference to our neighbour and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians.” “Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.”The Argentinian Pope emphasises that “God’s people need this interior renewal, lest we become indifferent and withdraw into ourselves. To further this renewal, I would like to propose for our reflection three biblical texts.”First and foremost, starting with a passage from the Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians (If one member suffers, all suffer together”), Pope Francis underlines that “we can only bear witness to what we ourselves have experienced. “Lent is a favourable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him.” Christians can remember to become a part of the “Body of Christ”, in other words the Church, and we discover once again that “in this body there is no room for the indifference which so often seems to possess our hearts.” Secondly, taking the Genesis question, “Where is your brother?” as a starting point, Francis emphasises “all that we have been saying about the universal Church must now be applied to the life of our parishes and communities. Do these ecclesial structures enable us to experience being part of one body? A body which receives and shares what God wishes to give? A body which acknowledges and cares for its weakest, poorest and most insignificant members? Or do we take refuge in a universal love that would embrace the whole world, while failing to see the Lazarus sitting before our closed doors.” He thus calls on “every Christian community to go out of itself and to be engaged in the life of the greater society of which it is a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away. The Church is missionary by her very nature; she is not self-enclosed but sent out to every nation and people.”“Dear brothers and sisters, how greatly I desire that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!” the Pope adds. Referring to the Bible verse from the Book of James which inspired the title of this year’s message (“Make your hearts firm”), the Pope remarks that: “As individuals too, we have are tempted by indifference. Flooded with news reports and troubling images of human suffering, we often feel our complete inability to help. What can we do to avoid being caught up in this spiral of distress and powerlessness?” The course of action proposed by the Pope is primarily prayer (“The 24 Hours for the Lord initiative, which I hope will be observed on 13-14 March throughout the Church, also at the diocesan level, is meant to be a sign of this need for prayer.”), then charity (“Lent is a favourable time for showing this concern for others by small yet concrete signs of our belonging to the one human family”) and thirdly conversion, because “the suffering of others is a call to conversion, since their need reminds me of the uncertainty of my own life and my dependence on God and my brothers and sisters” and reveals “a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” The Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, welcomed Mgr. Giampietro Dal Toso, Secretary of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum”, Mgr. Segundo Tejado Muñoz, Under-Secretary of the same Pontifical Council and Michel Roy, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis, in the Vatican newsroom for the presentation of the papal message. Mgr. Dal Toso, in particular, pointed out three areas of charitable action: rebuilding Haiti after the earthquake (21,5 million dollars have been spent by the Catholic Church so far), the Middle East – especially Syria and Iraq – and the Philippines, which the Pope visited recently. In answer to journalists’ questions regarding the envisioned merge between Cor Unum and other dicasteries as part of Francis’ plans for the reform of the Roman Curia (the Pontifical Council is without a prefect after Cardinal Robert Sarah’s appointment as Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments), Dal Toso said that “charity opens many doors and is representative of the Church, this will certainly be taken into consideration during the review of the Curia’s structures and I imagine that its reorganisation will give an even greater impetus to the great world of charity and the Church’s presence in the world for the purpose of human promotion.”

Greece and Ukraine top EU agenda this WEEK By Andrew Rettman-BRUSSELS, 26. Jan, 09:27-EUOBSERVER
