Israel and the Gaza-based terrorist organization Hamas may have reached a truce ending Operation Protective Edge late last August, but that didn't stop Hamas on Monday from firing rockets into the sea as part of tests to improve its ballistic capabilities and prepare for its next war against Israel.Channel 2 reports that a full ten rockets were fired from the ruins of the Jewish community of Gush Katif into the Mediterranean Sea during the test, and that it was meant to expand the range of Hamas's rockets which have already reached Hadera outside of Haifa in the north.Hamas has been busily developing its own domestically produced rockets, including the M-75 long range missile, given that Israel has been earnestly working to prevent outside arms from Hamas backers including Qatar, Turkey and Iran from reaching the terrorist group.This is far from the first missile test Hamas has conducted since its last rocket war on the Jewish state, with the most recent being held late last month when two rockets were fired into the sea.Hamas has not only been conducting tests; since the truce terrorists in Gaza have breached the ceasefire at least three times in rocket barrages on Israel, which Hamas has denied responsibility for despite being in control of the coastal enclave.The most recent attack occurred last month, just days before the last rocket test, and one day after Hamas held its largest military exercise since Operation Protective Edge on the ruins of two former Israeli villages - Dugit and Nissanit - in Gaza which were evacuated in the 2005 Disengagement plan, allowing Hamas to take over.In response to the rocket attack, the IAF struck Gaza concrete factories used to rebuild the terror tunnels leading into Israel to attack Israeli civilians. During the operation, the IDF destroyed over 30 such tunnels, but since it ended Hamas has been busily rebuilding them.

A Canadian woman who was one of the few children to come out of Auschwitz alive on liberation day in 1945 has returned to the infamous Nazi death camp for the first time.Miriam Friedman Ziegler said she had not planned to visit the camp during her visit this week to Poland, where she has joined other Holocaust survivors to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.But at the last minute, she decided to return to the place she last saw when she was nine years old."The most difficult day since the war for me was yesterday," Friedman Ziegler told The Canadian Press on Monday from her hotel in Krakow, Poland.The 79-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., visited the camp on Sunday, accompanied by her daughter. It was cold, snowy and emotionally overwhelming.Friedman Ziegler said she stopped in front of a barbed-wire fence — the same spot where 70 years ago, a photographer captured an iconic photo of 13 wide-eyed children — she was one of them — looking on as the Red Army soldiers approached.The horrible memories of experimentation and death flooded back as she stood there. She got back in the van with her daughter and sobbed.Within hours, however, she rebounded."Here I am, I was the lucky one," Friedman Ziegler said."I survived and I can talk about it and I'm a witness to it that it did happen."On Monday she reunited with three of the women who were captured in the black-and-white photo taken by Alexander Vorontsov, a Red Army combat photographer, shortly after the camp's liberation.She posed with the others for a new photo at the hotel in Krakow between a slew of events for more than 100 survivors. In one photograph, she lifted her sleeve to show the prisoner number the Nazis tattooed on her skin upon entering Auschwitz. The party wishes to remain in both the eurozone and the EU whilst renegotiating the country's crippling debt with its creditors.They wish to “repay Greece's debt based on the growth vector of the country” according to Kouvolakis instead of through cuts to public services.They propose a moratorium on debt in Europe's crisis countries based on the 1953 reduction of German debt following the second world war. Their argument is one that resonates with a lot of people in Europe's south.Hundreds of Italians made the trip across the Adriatic to celebrate on Sunday night and instigate endless renditions of 'Bella ciao' with the crowds outside the Syriza 'kiosk' on Klathmonos square.“Hope is coming”Although the message of hope has attracted a lot of people here in Athens, there are those who feel Syriza's message cannot go beyond rhetoric.“I like what he [Tsipras] says. But I just don't believe him.” Said Dimitri, a 45-year-old taxi driver as he drove past a rather empty New Democracy tent on Syntagma square.“He wants to give more money to the pensioners, good. But where will it come from? I don't like [PM]Samaras but he knows how to talk to Europe and that is where the money is. In six months Greece will be bankrupt.”Ultimately it will be Tspiras' ability to talk to Europe that will decide the country's fate.Although European leaders have taken a more conciliatory tone toward Syriza as they looked sure to gain power, there will be tough negotiations ahead between Athens and the Troika (of the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission).The leftist party's slogan in the run-up to the election has been “hope is coming”. While not everyone buys into the Obama-esque optimism of the campaign, most Greeks want a different economic direction.“Nobody believes everything will transform from one day to another. But the current deal we have with the EU has to change. If Tsipras stays strong to his word he will be able to force Germany to listen”, said Stamoulis, 24, a waiter from Meganissi in western Greece.Along with the rise of Podemos, Syriza's other weapon is of course the option of a unilateral default on the country's debt, which would cause turmoil in the eurozone. However this is the last possible bargaining chip that poses a whole range of potential problems.Two seats short of the absolute majority it was hoping for, Syriza is set to team up with the right-wing anti-austerity Independent Greeks, and will have to make some economic concessions to them too.This will moderate their ability to go guns blazing to Brussels with drastic options.

MADRID (Reuters) - Eight French nationals and two Greeks were killed and 21 people injured when a Greek fighter plane crashed during NATO training in Spain on Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said.The F-16 crashed at about 3:20 p.m. (9.20 a.m. EST) shortly after taking off at a training center in Albacete, 260 km (160 miles) southeast of the capital Madrid."There are also quite a lot of people injured ... 10 French people, 11 Italians," Rajoy said in an interview with Telecinco TV.The Greek fighter jet was carrying out a NATO training exercise at the Spanish base but something went wrong during the take-off." The plane lost power, crashing into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there," the defense ministry said in a statement.Two pilots on board were among the dead and other pilots and mechanics were underneath the plane in the parking area, according to Spanish media reports. French Mirage and Italian Alpha Jet planes were parked when the plane crashed, the defense ministry said.Five of the injured were taken to a specialist burns unit at La Paz Hospital in Madrid while the others were treated at a hospital in Albacete."I am deeply saddened," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement."This is a tragedy which affects the whole NATO family. The action means that travellers are not allowed to bring back any poultry products that aren't fully cooked.Canadians shopping in the U.S. are also restricted from bringing back live birds, eggs, egg whites, feathers, poultry manure or lab material containing poultry.The CFIA says live pet birds may be brought into Canada with certification from the U.S. Department of Agricultural.

TORONTO - A woman from British Columbia is the first person in North America to be diagnosed with H7N9 bird flu, after apparently contracting the virus while travelling in China earlier this month, Canadian health officials said Monday.Her husband, who had been travelling with her, was also sick with an influenza-like illness around the same time and it's believed he too was infected, but test results are still pending, said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s deputy provincial health officer."We're quite confident he had the same thing," Henry said in a telephone interview.The discovery of the case was announced Monday by Federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose, B.C. health authorities and officials of the Public Health Agency of Canada.All stressed that it is unlikely more cases will result from this imported infection. To date there have been very few instances where H7N9 is believed to have spread from person to person. And there have been no reported illnesses among people who had contact with the couple when they were ill."All of them so far are well, including the ones that had the closest contact in the period early on in their infection," Henry said.The couple, who are in their 50s, did not require hospitalization, but they were sick enough that they stayed home and had little outside contact at the height of their illness.''It was very classic influenza. Fever and a cough," said Dr. Reka Gustafson, medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health."Though one of the individuals we interviewed said that it did feel a little bit different. That's probably about as close as she could describe it. And it felt different enough for her to seek care."The couple's names were not released and officials would only say that they were residents of B.C.'s Lower Mainland region. They have since recovered.H7N9 is a subtype of flu that infects poultry. But in March 2013, authorities in China reported several cases of human infections. Since then, roughly 500 human infections have been diagnosed, all either in China or in people who had travelled to Mainland China. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia have all diagnosed infections in returning travellers.Roughly a third of the known infected patients died from the infection. The death rate is lower than that of the other main bird flu virus that sometimes infects people, H5N1, which kills just under 60 per cent of the people who become infected.Despite the fact it isn't as deadly, flu experts consider H7N9 to be at least as worrisome as H5N1.For one thing, H7N9 seems to infect people more easily. There have been 500 H7N9 infections in less than two years; the cumulative count of H5N1 cases is about 700, but those infections have built up over more than a decade.And H7N9 doesn't make poultry visibly ill, which means it's impossible to know which chickens are infected. The woman's doctor could easily have diagnosed influenza based on the woman's symptoms and sent her home to rest and recover.Instead, the physician swabbed the woman's throat and sent the test to the provincial laboratory for testing.The next day, when she received confirmation that her patient was infected with an influenza A virus, the doctor prescribed the flu drug oseltamivir — sold under the brand name Tamiflu — for the woman and her husband."I think it is surprising that we discovered them as cases," Henry admitted."If she had not done that test — both of them recovered uneventfully, they were given Tamiflu by the family doctor — we never would have known."H7N9 is an influenza A virus. But so are H1N1 and H3N2, the flu virus responsible for this season's flu activity. Laboratories do not subtype every single positive flu test doctors submit during flu season; they process a representative sample. Had the lab stopped after this virus was identified as an influenza A, the assumption would have been that the woman was one of the many Canadians who was infected with H3N2 this winter.But the lab — the B.C. Centre for Disease Control — tried to type the woman's sample, and discovered it was not a match for either H3N2 or H1N1. When further testing revealed it was an H7 virus, BCCDC alerted local and provincial public health officials, and the Public Health Agency of Canada was notified.At that point public health officials reached out to the couple, and the man was tested. Results are still pending, but given that he had recovered it is likely the test will come back negative, Henry said. She added that there are plans to test blood samples from both the man and the woman for antibodies to the H7N9 virus.Meanwhile, the woman's sample was flown to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for additional testing, which confirmed Monday that she was infected with H7N9, said Dr. Gregory Taylor, Canada's chief public health officer.Taylor said Canada has informed the World Health Organization, as it is required to do under the International Health Regulations. And it is providing China with information on the cases.But it appears unlikely that anyone will be able to determine precisely when and how the couple became infected. They reported being in a number of places where chickens were present, but that is common in China."There's a number of different periods of time where they were aware of there being birds around and bird droppings in a number of places. So we're going to give the details to the Chinese government obviously. But we're not going to say where because we can't tell where the exposures were," Henry said.Last January, a woman from Red Deer, Alta., died of H5N1 bird flu, the first known case in North America. She too had recently returned from a trip to China, but officials couldn't determine how she became exposed to the virus."We never did find out exactly where that case came from and I would assume in this current one that we probably won't find out either," said Taylor. "It's extremely difficult to detect where that came from."Taylor said the Public Health Agency does not recommend that Canadians travelling to China avoid particular cities or towns — H7N9 has been found in many parts of that country — but it does urge people to avoid contact with poultry and so-called wet markets, which sell and slaughter live poultry.

Israel and the Gaza-based terrorist organization Hamas may have reached a truce ending Operation Protective Edge late last August, but that didn't stop Hamas on Monday from firing rockets into the sea as part of tests to improve its ballistic capabilities and prepare for its next war against Israel.Channel 2 reports that a full ten rockets were fired from the ruins of the Jewish community of Gush Katif into the Mediterranean Sea during the test, and that it was meant to expand the range of Hamas's rockets which have already reached Hadera outside of Haifa in the north.Hamas has been busily developing its own domestically produced rockets, including the M-75 long range missile, given that Israel has been earnestly working to prevent outside arms from Hamas backers including Qatar, Turkey and Iran from reaching the terrorist group.This is far from the first missile test Hamas has conducted since its last rocket war on the Jewish state, with the most recent being held late last month when two rockets were fired into the sea.Hamas has not only been conducting tests; since the truce terrorists in Gaza have breached the ceasefire at least three times in rocket barrages on Israel, which Hamas has denied responsibility for despite being in control of the coastal enclave.The most recent attack occurred last month, just days before the last rocket test, and one day after Hamas held its largest military exercise since Operation Protective Edge on the ruins of two former Israeli villages - Dugit and Nissanit - in Gaza which were evacuated in the 2005 Disengagement plan, allowing Hamas to take over.In response to the rocket attack, the IAF struck Gaza concrete factories used to rebuild the terror tunnels leading into Israel to attack Israeli civilians. During the operation, the IDF destroyed over 30 such tunnels, but since it ended Hamas has been busily rebuilding them.

News reports Monday night, amid fears of real escalation between Israel and Islamists in neighboring Syria and Lebanon.The mechanical engineering company of the IDF's Northern Command has employed tractors and borders to dig the trenches, a source told the news site, amid specific concerns regarding terrorist infiltrations by car via border crossings."The trenches are being dug along vulnerable spots on the border, after a thorough analysis [of the risks], to prevent free traffic in the area and reduce infiltration," the military source stated. A Canadian woman who was one of the few children to come out of Auschwitz alive on liberation day in 1945 has returned to the infamous Nazi death camp for the first time.Miriam Friedman Ziegler said she had not planned to visit the camp during her visit this week to Poland, where she has joined other Holocaust survivors to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.But at the last minute, she decided to return to the place she last saw when she was nine years old."The most difficult day since the war for me was yesterday," Friedman Ziegler told The Canadian Press on Monday from her hotel in Krakow, Poland.The 79-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., visited the camp on Sunday, accompanied by her daughter. It was cold, snowy and emotionally overwhelming.Friedman Ziegler said she stopped in front of a barbed-wire fence — the same spot where 70 years ago, a photographer captured an iconic photo of 13 wide-eyed children — she was one of them — looking on as the Red Army soldiers approached.The horrible memories of experimentation and death flooded back as she stood there. She got back in the van with her daughter and sobbed.Within hours, however, she rebounded."Here I am, I was the lucky one," Friedman Ziegler said."I survived and I can talk about it and I'm a witness to it that it did happen."On Monday she reunited with three of the women who were captured in the black-and-white photo taken by Alexander Vorontsov, a Red Army combat photographer, shortly after the camp's liberation.She posed with the others for a new photo at the hotel in Krakow between a slew of events for more than 100 survivors. In one photograph, she lifted her sleeve to show the prisoner number the Nazis tattooed on her skin upon entering Auschwitz. Their argument is one that resonates with a lot of people in Europe's south.Hundreds of Italians made the trip across the Adriatic to celebrate on Sunday night and instigate endless renditions of 'Bella ciao' with the crowds outside the Syriza 'kiosk' on Klathmonos square.“Hope is coming”Although the message of hope has attracted a lot of people here in Athens, there are those who feel Syriza's message cannot go beyond rhetoric.“I like what he [Tsipras] says. But I just don't believe him.” Said Dimitri, a 45-year-old taxi driver as he drove past a rather empty New Democracy tent on Syntagma square.“He wants to give more money to the pensioners, good. But where will it come from? I don't like [PM]Samaras but he knows how to talk to Europe and that is where the money is. In six months Greece will be bankrupt.”Ultimately it will be Tspiras' ability to talk to Europe that will decide the country's fate.Although European leaders have taken a more conciliatory tone toward Syriza as they looked sure to gain power, there will be tough negotiations ahead between Athens and the Troika (of the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission).The leftist party's slogan in the run-up to the election has been “hope is coming”. While not everyone buys into the Obama-esque optimism of the campaign, most Greeks want a different economic direction.“Nobody believes everything will transform from one day to another. But the current deal we have with the EU has to change. If Tsipras stays strong to his word he will be able to force Germany to listen”, said Stamoulis, 24, a waiter from Meganissi in western Greece.Along with the rise of Podemos, Syriza's other weapon is of course the option of a unilateral default on the country's debt, which would cause turmoil in the eurozone. However this is the last possible bargaining chip that poses a whole range of potential problems.Two seats short of the absolute majority it was hoping for, Syriza is set to team up with the right-wing anti-austerity Independent Greeks, and will have to make some economic concessions to them too.This will moderate their ability to go guns blazing to Brussels with drastic options.

Where the state has failed volunteers and communities have stepped in to provide basic services such as medicine, food and social care for society's poorest.One such community-driven 'social pharmacy' in Galatsi estimates they arrange voluntary health visits by doctors and nurses to 120 people each week, most of whom have chronic diseases.Austerity has quite visibly caused the state to fail to provide basic services to citizens and the Greeks have protested this at the ballot box.The question now is to what extent will the new government be able to implement its mandate of ending austerity without causing further turmoil.How the rest of Europe reacts will determine a big part of that question.As the broken banners and empty Alfa cans are swept away from Klathmonos square, it remains to be seen how the victory will play out in Brussels and Berlin.

OTTAWA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has implemented new restrictions after more cases of avian flu was confirmed in California and Idaho.The bird flu has been a problem for weeks in flocks in Washington and Oregon states.A CFIA statement says it is taking steps to protect Canadian poultry flocks from a highly virulent strain of the bird flu found in the states of California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The action means that travellers are not allowed to bring back any poultry products that aren't fully cooked.Canadians shopping in the U.S. are also restricted from bringing back live birds, eggs, egg whites, feathers, poultry manure or lab material containing poultry.The CFIA says live pet birds may be brought into Canada with certification from the U.S. Department of Agricultural.

TORONTO - A woman from British Columbia is the first person in North America to be diagnosed with H7N9 bird flu, after apparently contracting the virus while travelling in China earlier this month, Canadian health officials said Monday.Her husband, who had been travelling with her, was also sick with an influenza-like illness around the same time and it's believed he too was infected, but test results are still pending, said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s deputy provincial health officer."We're quite confident he had the same thing," Henry said in a telephone interview.The discovery of the case was announced Monday by Federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose, B.C. health authorities and officials of the Public Health Agency of Canada.All stressed that it is unlikely more cases will result from this imported infection. To date there have been very few instances where H7N9 is believed to have spread from person to person. And there have been no reported illnesses among people who had contact with the couple when they were ill."All of them so far are well, including the ones that had the closest contact in the period early on in their infection," Henry said.The couple, who are in their 50s, did not require hospitalization, but they were sick enough that they stayed home and had little outside contact at the height of their illness.''It was very classic influenza. Fever and a cough," said Dr. Reka Gustafson, medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health."Though one of the individuals we interviewed said that it did feel a little bit different. That's probably about as close as she could describe it. And it felt different enough for her to seek care."The couple's names were not released and officials would only say that they were residents of B.C.'s Lower Mainland region. They have since recovered.H7N9 is a subtype of flu that infects poultry. But in March 2013, authorities in China reported several cases of human infections. Since then, roughly 500 human infections have been diagnosed, all either in China or in people who had travelled to Mainland China. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia have all diagnosed infections in returning travellers.Roughly a third of the known infected patients died from the infection. The death rate is lower than that of the other main bird flu virus that sometimes infects people, H5N1, which kills just under 60 per cent of the people who become infected.Despite the fact it isn't as deadly, flu experts consider H7N9 to be at least as worrisome as H5N1.For one thing, H7N9 seems to infect people more easily. There have been 500 H7N9 infections in less than two years; the cumulative count of H5N1 cases is about 700, but those infections have built up over more than a decade.And H7N9 doesn't make poultry visibly ill, which means it's impossible to know which chickens are infected. H5N1 is lethal to poultry; dying chickens make outbreaks easy to spot.This British Columbia H7N9 infection might easily have gone undetected but for the actions of an astute family physician.The couple returned to Canada from China on Jan. 12. Two days later, the husband became ill with influenza-like symptoms. A day after, the wife developed the same symptoms, and decided to seek medical help."Typical behaviour — he stayed home and she went to see her doctor," Henry said.British Columbia — like the rest of the country — has been in the grips of a very active seasonal flu outbreak this month. The woman's doctor could easily have diagnosed influenza based on the woman's symptoms and sent her home to rest and recover.Instead, the physician swabbed the woman's throat and sent the test to the provincial laboratory for testing.The next day, when she received confirmation that her patient was infected with an influenza A virus, the doctor prescribed the flu drug oseltamivir — sold under the brand name Tamiflu — for the woman and her husband."I think it is surprising that we discovered them as cases," Henry admitted."If she had not done that test — both of them recovered uneventfully, they were given Tamiflu by the family doctor — we never would have known."H7N9 is an influenza A virus. But so are H1N1 and H3N2, the flu virus responsible for this season's flu activity. Laboratories do not subtype every single positive flu test doctors submit during flu season; they process a representative sample. Had the lab stopped after this virus was identified as an influenza A, the assumption would have been that the woman was one of the many Canadians who was infected with H3N2 this winter.But the lab — the B.C. Centre for Disease Control — tried to type the woman's sample, and discovered it was not a match for either H3N2 or H1N1. When further testing revealed it was an H7 virus, BCCDC alerted local and provincial public health officials, and the Public Health Agency of Canada was notified.At that point public health officials reached out to the couple, and the man was tested. Results are still pending, but given that he had recovered it is likely the test will come back negative, Henry said. She added that there are plans to test blood samples from both the man and the woman for antibodies to the H7N9 virus.Meanwhile, the woman's sample was flown to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for additional testing, which confirmed Monday that she was infected with H7N9, said Dr. Gregory Taylor, Canada's chief public health officer.Taylor said Canada has informed the World Health Organization, as it is required to do under the International Health Regulations. And it is providing China with information on the cases.But it appears unlikely that anyone will be able to determine precisely when and how the couple became infected. They reported being in a number of places where chickens were present, but that is common in China."There's a number of different periods of time where they were aware of there being birds around and bird droppings in a number of places. So we're going to give the details to the Chinese government obviously. But we're not going to say where because we can't tell where the exposures were," Henry said.Last January, a woman from Red Deer, Alta., died of H5N1 bird flu, the first known case in North America. She too had recently returned from a trip to China, but officials couldn't determine how she became exposed to the virus."We never did find out exactly where that case came from and I would assume in this current one that we probably won't find out either," said Taylor. "It's extremely difficult to detect where that came from."Taylor said the Public Health Agency does not recommend that Canadians travelling to China avoid particular cities or towns — H7N9 has been found in many parts of that country — but it does urge people to avoid contact with poultry and so-called wet markets, which sell and slaughter live poultry.
