Person of Interest' in O'Brien/Liknes disappearance has criminal history-Man questioned by CPS in amber alert investigation has criminal past-Bill Macfarlane reports on the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents.CTV Calgary Staff-Published Sunday, July 6, 2014 6:35PM MDT-Last Updated Sunday, July 6, 2014 6:55PM MDT

Residents of a rural area northeast of Airdrie confirm the man police escorted from an acreage on Friday is Douglas Garland, a man previously charged in connection to the manufacturing of drugs and identity theft.Calgary police and members of the RCMP responded to a rural property following a tip from the public indicating a truck matching the description of a suspect vehicle in the disappearance of Nathan O’Brien, Kathryn Liknes, and Alvin Liknes.Neighbours tell CTV Douglas lives on the acreage which belongs to Archie and Doreen Garland.

Douglas Garland was transported to Calgary for questioning in relation to the missing people. On Sunday, the ‘person of interest’ was released from police custody but remains a ‘person of interest’ in connection to the ongoing investigation.Douglas Garland was arrested and charged in the 1990’s after attempting to make drugs on the parents belonging to his parents.Garland fled to B.C. and assumed a false identity. He lived in B.C. for several years until police located and apprehended him.Calgary police have not confirmed Garland’s connection to the investigation.Social media indicates several connections between the Liknes/O’Brien family and the Garlands. CTV Calgary asked Nathan O’Brien’s parents if they know the Garland family. The O’Briens said ‘No comment’.Leo Valasco, one of the Garland’s neighbours, says the police presence in the rural community is unusual.“It’s weird for us,” said Valasco. “This is a nice place here. It’s safe, we never lock the doors.”“If (the Garlands) have connection to the crime, we don’t know. It’s so sad.”Read more: http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/person-of-interest-in-o-brien-liknes-disappearance-has-criminal-history-1.1901626#ixzz36jzVE3K8

Investigators continue search of Calgary-area acreage in missing family case-The Canadian PressBy Bill Graveland, The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – JULY 6,14-YahooNews
AIRDRIE, Alta. - A search is expected to continue today at an acreage northeast of Calgary in connection with the disappearance of a five-year-old boy and his grandparents. Both RCMP and Calgary police investigators combed through the acreage yesterday, on a tree-lined driveway near Airdrie, a bedroom community north of Calgary.Acting on a tip police arrived at the property late Friday night and found a green Ford F-150 truck similar to one spotted in a video near the home of Alvin and Kathy Liknes.A man was taken into custody and is described as a "person of interest".Five-year-old Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents disappeared from their Calgary home on Monday after the couple had been holding an estate sale.Police confirmed Friday that there was evidence that a violent incident had occurred in the Liknes' Calgary home. The search of the Airdrie property was likely to continue throughout the weekend, police suggested."Given the size of the property police will likely be there for the next 24 to 36 hours," said Calgary Police Duty Inspector Joel Matthews.About 20 officers had been doing a grid search late Saturday afternoon and into the evening before calling it quits for the night.Matthews cautioned that the public should not read too much into the person of interest being taken into custody."We're questioning the man and following the lead on the vehicle just to further the investigation," Matthews said."It's simply a lead we are following up. Our investigators are going to follow every lead that we believe has some weight. Due to the sensitivity of the investigation we just want to make sure we cover everything off."Follow @BillGraveland on Twitter
