Fearing jihadi attack on Israeli planes, Egypt sends troops to border-Cairo deploys hundreds to Taba crossing area to stymie threat of missiles launched against aircraft heading for Eilat-By Avi Issacharoff June 11, 2014, 4:32 pm 1-The Times of Israel
The Egyptian military recently deployed a large military force near the border crossing with Israel at Taba in order to prevent rocket and missile attacks on Israel.Egyptian sources estimate the force is about the size of a battalion, or several hundred men. The move was coordinated with Israel.Egypt is concerned that jihadist operatives in the Sinai Peninsula who are affiliated with al-Qaeda may try to down an Israeli civilian aircraft flying near the border during its approach for landing in the resort town of Eilat. In January, members of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, an Egyptian Islamist militant group, downed an Egyptian military helicopter, killing the five officers aboard. Investigation of the incident found that the jihadist group used SA-7 anti-aircraft missiles smuggled from Libya.Since that incident, Israeli, Egyptian and Jordanian concerns have increased that such groups will try to down a civilian aircraft within range of such missiles. For that reason the Egyptian Third Army decided to deploy a battalion of soldiers near the Israeli border just outside Eilat in order to prevent similar occurrences.January’s incident was not the first in which jihadist groups used missiles of this kind. During the attack on an Israeli bus near Eilat in August 2011, an IAF helicopter pilot reported that an RPG was fired at his aircraft. An Israeli investigation found that an SA-7 was used in that attack as well. The threat of anti-aircraft weapons has the potential to inflict serious harm on the tourism industries of Egypt, Israel and Jordan in the Gulf of Eilat.Over the past several years, numerous rockets have been fired at the southern port city of Eilat from the Sinai Peninsula. The Egyptian force will also serve to prevent similar attacks on Israeli civilians.
Danon Demands: 'Cut Money to Unity PA After Gaza Attack'-After rocket attack, Deputy Minister calls on PM to cut all tax money collected by Israel for PA, which is now responsible for Gaza, too.By Ido Ben-Porat, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 6/11/2014, 2:52 PM-IsraelNationalNews
Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon on Wednesday called for the immediate cessation of transfers on all tax money collected by Israel for the Palestinian Authority (PA), in the wake of the Kassam rocket attack from Gaza earlier in the morning. The rocket, which was fired by Gaza terrorists, exploded near a community by Highway 232 in the Eshkol Regional Council in the north-western Negev. No injuries or damage was reported from the attack."This is the result of the Palestinian unity government," declared Danon, referencing the government that was sworn in last Monday, and includes three ministers from Gaza that were backed by the Hamas terror group governing the area.Danon demanded the complete cancellation of transfers of tax money to the PA following the attack. In late April, those tax transfers began to be partially sanctioned as a response to the Fatah-Hamas unity deal which torpedoed peace talks, and as a means to collect massive PA debts to Israel."I have requested that the prime minister act upon the cabinet decision following the (formation of the) unity government, which determined that the Palestinian Authority will bear the responsibility for all activities against Israel," remarked Danon.Danon last Monday criticized the new unity government's inclusion of Hamas, saying "now, all aid given to the Palestinians by the United States and other countries directly aids terror attacks against the state of Israel."Speaking to Arutz Sheva on Sunday, Dannon added "it is clear that the 2006 bill that passed Congress clearly states that funds cannot go to terrorism," noting that US law opposes the recent declaration of the American administration to "work with" the new unity government.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's Arabic spokesman Ofir Gendelman responded to the rocket attack as well, blaming PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas for the missile, according to AFP."PA President Abbas is responsible and accountable for rockets that are fired at Israeli towns and cities by terrorists in the Gaza Strip," wrote Gendelman on his Twitter account.
EU Delegation Meets Palestinian Unity Gov't Officials in Gaza-Visit by European diplomats to 'send a message of support' for Hamas-Fatah coalition.By AFP and Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 6/11/2014, 2:49 PM-IsraelNationalNews
A delegation of European diplomats traveled to the Gaza Strip to meet the Gaza-based ministers of a new Palestinian Authority "unity government", an EU official said Wednesday.John Gatt-Rutter, the EU representative to Judea, Samaria and Gaza, was joined at the Tuesday meeting by French, Swedish, Danish and Portuguese diplomats, the official told AFP, speaking anonymously.Four of the 17 ministers in the PA unity government are based in Gaza. The government was sworn in on June 2 under a reconciliation deal between Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas and the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, in a move to end seven years of rival administrations in the two territories. The meeting was an opportunity to the congratulate the Gaza ministers and receive updates on the situation in Gaza, but also "a political message that we support the national consensus government," the official said."It was a follow-up to the statement we issued," he said of remarks by EU foreign affairs head Catherine Ashton, who welcomed the new unity government. It is worth noting that Hamas is on the EU's list of terrorist organizations. That listing specifically includes both "Hamas" and "Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem," meaning that both the military and governmental branches of Hamas are recognized as terror groups by the EU. Washington - which also classifies Hamas as a terrorist group - has also agreed to work with the new government, prompting a furious reaction from Israel, which had urged the international community not to rush into recognizing the new entity, which includes Hamas - an organization committed to Israel's destruction. The Palestinian Authority unity cabinet has been set up as a "non-partisan, independent government" of "technocrats", in an attempt to deflect criticism over Hamas's involvement. Indeed, US officials have repeatedly used the fact that no Hamas members have been appointed to it as a reason for American cooperation despite laws banning cooperation with terrorist organizations. But critics have pointed out that the "interim government" - which is tasked with organizing general elections by year-end and has no political mandate - will undoubtedly be influenced by Hamas regardless. On Monday, UN's official envoy Robert Serry became the first senior international diplomat to meet with members of the new unity government.
Kassam Rocket From Gaza Explodes Next to Central Highway-Gaza terrorists fire rocket at Eshkol Regional Council, no injuries or damage reported despite falling right by highway and community.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 6/11/2014, 9:47 AM-IsraelNationalNews
A Kassam rocket fired by terrorists in Gaza exploded on Wednesday morning in the Eshkol Regional Council area in the north-western Negev."Color red" sirens were sounded, and no injuries or damage was reported as a result of the attack. The rocket fell right near a central highway by one of the communities in the region.Roughly 140 missiles have been fired from Gaza terrorists since the start of 2014, AFP quoted IDF sources as saying. The attack comes just after Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon warned Tuesday that Hamas is preparing for the next clash with Israel, regardless of the recent unity government formed between the terrorist group and Fatah last Monday."Hamas signed the reconciliation pact from a position of disadvantage. It has no better alternative,” Ya’alon said during a meeting with soldiers from the IDF’s Gaza Division.“But make no mistake: Hamas is preparing itself for a confrontation with Israel, training forces and storing missiles and rockets,” he continued. “It already has thousands of missiles and rockets pointed towards Israel."Ya'alon concluded, saying "we are taking a very clear policy: quiet is being answered by quiet, and firing is being answered by a harsh response on our part.”There has been a constant trickle of terror from Gaza, with the most recent serious barrage of rockets hitting in mid-March, when roughly 100 rockets struck in the course of three days.
Netanyahu meets Rivlin, says he’s ready to bury hatchet-Prime minister and president-elect, at odds for years, embrace and say they’re ready to work together for Israel-By Spencer Ho June 11, 2014, 1:35 pm-The Times of Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu embraced and formally congratulated President-elect Reuven Rivlin Wednesday on his victory in Tuesday’s Knesset vote and expressed confidence that the two could work together.“Joint work on behalf of all Israelis is before us,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “We have gone through much together and I am certain that we will now know to put the less good aspects aside and work responsibly for the future of the State of Israel.”For his part, Rivlin said that “the prime minister and I are committed to full and fruitful cooperation for the State of Israel and the people of Israel. On Tuesday, Rivlin, a veteran MK from Netanyahu’s Likud party, emerged victorious from a tight presidential race, beating out his centrist opponent, Hatnua MK Meir Sheetrit, by 63 votes to 53 in a runoff to mark the end of a tumultuous campaign that saw one candidate withdraw and another decline to run amid scandal.During the course of the campaign, Rivlin himself was at the center of reports that Netanyahu was looking into the option of abolishing the presidency to keep him from attaining the post. The two men have been at odds for years.Eventually Netanyahu endorsed his fellow party member, making him the overwhelming favorite for the post. However, on election day, the Hebrew media reported that Netanyahu’s office was attempting to sabotage Rivlin’s campaign by lobbying for Sheetrit behind the scenes. After securing the win, Rivlin insisted there was no “bad blood” between him and the prime minister, and that he hoped to work closely with Netanyahu throughout his presidential term.Rivlin added that he was “not angry at anyone.”In a bid to lay to rest the rivalry after the vote Tuesday, Netanyahu congratulated Rivlin and said he would work with him.“I know you will do all you can as president and I promise that I as prime minister … will do the same with you,” he said.At a toast following the announcement of his win, Rivlin pledged to abandon party politics and become “a man of the nation.” The President’s Residence, which he will shortly occupy, is “the house of all Israelis,” he said.Rivlin later visited the Western Wall and the grave of his father, who unsuccessfully sought to be Israel’s third president, on the Mount of Olives.Netanyahu also praised Rivlin at a toast following the victory, calling him “a man of Jerusalem and a man of the land of Israel.”Adiv Sterman contributed to this report.
