DCA to discuss with Inmarsat on releasing its raw data for the public
Bernama | Updated: May 20, 2014-Astro Awani

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has been instructed to discuss with British satellite company Inmarsat on the release of the latter's raw data for public consumption.
Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said this was done in light of the recent demands by the next-of-kin of missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 for the Inmarsat 'raw data'."This is consistent with our stand for greater transparency and prioritising the interests of the family members of those on board MH370," he said in statement here, on Monday. The Chinese next-of-kin of passengers on board the missing aircraft had suggested that  the Malaysian authorities purchase the raw data from Inmarsat. One of the relatives suggested the purchased data could be shared and made available globally so that it could be analysed by aviation experts. On a smiliar note, Hishammuddin noted that a team of technical experts had convened in Canberra to discuss and refine the satellite data, calculations and analysis which have been made available by Inmarsat. The hunt for the missing Boeing 777 aircraft has entered the tenth week since its disappearance on March 8.The plane with 239 people aboard including 12 crew members vanished on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.A search operation for the aircraft is underway in waters off western Australia, in the southern Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said that a team of hydrographic experts from Malaysia, China and Australia had agreed to conduct an extensive bathymetric survey in  the southern Indian Ocean."This survey will be conducted by the Chinese navy vessel, Zhu Kezhen (872) and it is scheduled to sail to the survey area on Wednesday, weather permitting," he added.

Update on MH370 Search-JACC MAY 19,14

ADV Ocean Shield arrived at Geraldton, Western Australia, yesterday to begin preparations to receive spare parts related to the transponder mounted on the Ocean Shield and the transponder mounted on the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Bluefin-21.The repairs are necessary to correct a hardware issue affecting the ability of the transponders to communicate with each other during a dive. The problem became apparent during Bluefin-21's last mission on Tuesday.Ocean Shield was originally going to Dampier to await the transponder parts, however, it was determined that the parts could be delivered to the ship more quickly via the port of Geraldton. The spare parts are expected to arrive in Geraldton later today.Once the replacement parts are installed, testing will be conducted at Geraldton prior to Ocean Shield transiting back to the search area.Malaysian, Australian and Chinese authorities met over the weekend in Fremantle to discuss the bathymetric survey. It was agreed that the Chinese survey ship Zhu Kezhen will conduct the bathymetric survey of the areas provided by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.Zhu Kezhen is scheduled to sail for the survey area on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Inmarsat 'working' to make raw MH370 data public
By Saima Mohsin and Holly Yan, CNN-updated 10:58 PM EDT, Mon May 19, 2014

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- The raw satellite data used to shape the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 could soon be made public, according to a senior Malaysian official.Publication of the raw data could allow for independent analysis. Until now, the Malaysian government, which is in charge of the investigation, and Inmarsat have declined to release it.But on Tuesday, Inmarsat -- the company whose satellites communicated with the missing plane in its last hours -- and Malaysian officials said they are working on making more information public."In line with our commitment towards greater transparency, all parties are working for the release of the data communication logs and the technical description of the analysis for public consumption," Inmarsat and the Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation said in a joint statement.Earlier, the Malaysian government asked Inmarsat to release the data "for public consumption," Malaysia's Acting Minister of Transportation Hishammuddin Hussein said Monday."This is consistent with our stand for greater transparency and prioritizing the interests of the family members of those on board MH370," Hishammuddin said.

Doubts raised over possible pings

Relatives of people who were on the Boeing 777, scientists studying its disappearance and media covering the search have become increasingly critical about the lack of public information about why the search has focused on the southern Indian Ocean. The plane disappeared while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 with 239 people aboard."The demand for raw data means we need help from Inmarsat to pass on to families in a presentable way," a senior Malaysian official told CNN. "We are trying to be as transparent as possible. We have no issues releasing the data."

Did Inmarsat data point Flight 370 searchers in wrong direction?

Although Malaysian officials told CNN last week that their government did not have the raw data, Inmarsat officials said the company provided all of it to Malaysian officials "at an early stage in the search."The data were gathered through a series of "handshakes" between the plane and Inmarsat satellites as the aircraft flew off-course for hours."We've shared the information that we had, and it's for the investigation to decide what and when it puts out," Inmarsat Senior Vice President Chris McLaughlin said last week. The data were used, in combination with calculations from other entities including Boeing, to produce a series of maps that concluded the plane was somewhere along a huge arc that ended in the southern Indian Ocean.CNN's Saima Mohsin reported from Kuala Lumpur; Holly Yan reported from Atlanta

Updated: Sunday May 18, 2014 MYT 1:31:38 PM-MH370: Ask Boeing and CIA, don't blame MAS, says Dr Mahathir-by d. kanyakumari-Thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Sunday suggested that Boeing and the Central Intelligence Agency should be questioned over the missing Flight MH370."Someone is hiding something. It is not fair that Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and Malaysia should take the blame," he said in his blog Chedet.cc.In his 11-paragraph long post, Mahathir expressed his viewpoints and theories on the situation and stressed that something was out of place and that the media would not post anything about Boeing or CIA."They can land safely or they may crash, but airplanes do not just disappear. Certainly not these days with all the powerful communication systems which operate almost indefinitely and possess huge storage capacities,” Mahathir said.Stating that he believes the tracking system on the plane was intentionally disabled, Mahathir questioned on where was the data of the plane, which was supposed to have been recorded by the satellite."MH370 is a Boeing 777 aircraft. It was built and equipped by Boeing, hence all the communications and GPS equipment must have been installed by Boeing. "If they failed or have been disabled, Boeing must know how it can be done and surely Boeing would ensure that they cannot be easily disabled as they are vital to the safety and operation of the plane," he said.He added that in 2006, Boeing received a US patent for a system that, once activated, removes all control from pilots to automatically return a commercial airliner to a pre-determined landing location. He cited Flightglobal.com article by John Croft dated Dec 1, 2006, stating that the ‘uninterruptible’ autopilot would be activated – either by pilots, on board sensors or even by radio or satellite links by government agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency, if terrorists attempt to gain control of the flight deck."Clearly Boeing and certain agencies have the capacity to take over 'uninterruptible control' of commercial airliners of which MH370 is one," he said.Mahathir said attempts to detect the plane by looking for debris and oil slick was a waste of money, adding that this was not an ordinary crash and that the plane was  somewhere, maybe without MAS’ markings."Boeing should explain about this so-called anti-terrorism auto-land system."I cannot imagine the pilots made a soft-landing in rough seas and then quietly drown with the aircraft," he added.

MH370 pilot did not believe in life insurance, says family-thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: The relatives of missing Flight MH370’s pilot Capt Zaharie Ahmad Shah have broken their silence to tick off those who have put forward pilot suicide as a possible reason for the plane’s disappearance. With all sorts of speculations swirling around about a purported suicide designed to collect a big insurance payout, the family is also upset that MAS has not spoken for him or protected him.Asuad Khan, the brother-in-law of Capt Zaharie, reiterated that the experienced aviator did not even believe in having a life insurance policy.“Not only did he not have a life insurance policy, he and his family do not have medical insurance coverage. Any insurance payout will only be from MAS,” he said.Speaking on behalf of his sister Faizah Khan, Asuad said the inaccurate speculation had tarnished Capt Zaharie’s image.“Arie had told Faizah that when he retired from MAS, any health problems would be dealt with at government hospitals and that they had to live within their means.“He is a man with a sense of humour. ‘We will be retired so we will have all the time in the world to wait at the hospital,’ he had told his wife,” said Asuad.“His work is his passion and life has been good to him and his family, so why would he want to commit suicide as well as take the lives of 238 people along with him?”With Malaysian police still looking at the possibility of a hijack, terrorism or even “pilot suicide’’, Asuad said Faizah still gets interviewed by them and it is taking a toll on her.“She is accepting the fact that Arie is dead but it gets to her when people talk bad about him without knowing anything about him.“He is the most generous person in terms of advice, money and time,” he added.
