First book on MH370 claims plane may have been shot down-Syafique Shuib, Astro Awani | Updated: May 19, 2014-The cover of 'Flight MH370: The Mystery' book
KUALA LUMPUR: A new book released today claimed that the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8, may have been mistakenly shot down during a military exercise.‘Flight MH370: The Mystery’ is the first of perhaps many other books that touched on the disappearance of the plane. According to news.com.au news portal, the book written by Nigel Cawthorne, claimed that the plane carrying 239 passengers was shot down during a US/Thailand military exercise. He added that the mistake may have been covered up because authorities did not want any retaliatory attacks. He added that the data that sent the search mission from the Straits of Malacca to the southern Indian Ocean was a cover up. Meanwhile, American aviation author Christine Negroni is also working on a book about the missing Malaysian flight entitled ‘Crashed’.Earlier, two films inspired by the missing Malaysian Airlines' flight MH370 are being touted to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, barely two months after the plane vanished with 239 people on board.Potential buyers will get a sneak preview of "A Dark Reflection" by Fact Not Fiction Films at a "screening" on Monday, according to a full page advertisement in industry trade journal The Hollywood Reporter.
MH370: Someone is hiding something, says Dr M-Astro Awani | Updated: May 18, 2014-Mahathir believes that "someone is hiding something" as "airplanes don't just disappear".
KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad believed that 'somebody is hiding something' in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370, fueling speculation of a conspiracy or cover-up by certain parties.Dismissing current search efforts by international authorities as a "waste of time and money", the former prime minister also alleged that what happened to MAS Boeing 777-200ER was "most likely not an ordinary crash" when it ran out of petrol after vanishing from radar screens on March 8."It is a waste of time and money to look for debris or oil slick or to listen for 'pings' from the black box," Mahathir wrote in his blog, Chedet.cc."This is most likely not an ordinary crash after fuel was exhausted. The plane is somewhere, maybe without MAS markings," he said.In his posting today which ran 11 paragraphs long, Mahathir took aim at US airplane maker Boeing and the US government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), insinuating that foreign elements should be questioned instead of Malaysia."Someone is hiding something. It is not fair that MAS and Malaysia should take the blame."In the post "Boeing Technology – What goes up must come down", Mahathir said "airplanes don't just disappear. Certainly not these days with all the powerful communication systems, radio and satellite tracking and filmless cameras which operate almost indefinitely and possess huge storage capacities."He repeated his theory that MH370's communication system as well as the signals for GPS "must have been disabled".These systems, he said, "must have been installed by Boeing" and the company must know how it could have failed or have been disabled."Surely Boeing would ensure that they cannot be easily disabled as they are vital to the safety and operation of the plane."Mahathir also shared that a search on the Internet reveals that Boeing in 2006 received a US patent for a system that, once activated, removes all control from pilots to automatically return a commercial airliner to a pre-determined landing location. He cites a Flightglobal.com article by John Croft, datelined Washington DC (Dec 1, 2006) which mentioned "The 'uninterruptible' autopilot would be activated – either by pilot, by on board sensors, or even remotely by radio or satellite links by government agencies like the CIA, if terrorists attempt to gain control of the flight deck"."Clearly Boeing and certain agencies have the capacity to take over 'uninterruptible control' of commercial airliners of which MH370 B777 is one," argued Mahathir, urging for Boeing to explain this anti-terrorism auto-land system."Can it not be that the pilot of MH370 lost control of their aircraft after someone directly or remotely activated the equipment for seizure of control of the aircraft?" he asked. On March 8 at12.41am, flight MH370 took off from the KL International Airport for Beijing, China before going off the radar less than an hour later. There were 239 people on board of various nationalities. The 72-day international search for the missing jetliner, is now focused in the southern Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Australia. But all efforts have been fruitless so far.
MH370: MAS denies abandoning families-Haider Yutim, Astro Awani | Updated: May 19, 2014
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has denied abandoning families of crew members on flight MH370 who are seeking legal help.In a statement today, the national carrier said it will continue to offer the same assistance to all family members but communications with families represented by foreign lawyers will be through their appointed lawyers as they have directed.“Several family members have appointed foreign lawyers to represent their interests, and these foreign lawyers have directed that MAS cease from any further direct communication with their clients, and that MAS direct all further communications regarding these crew member families to them,” the statement said.MAS added that it has also been in contact with family members without legal representation through the Family Support Centre (FSC) and have been providing these family members updates from the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) and the Malaysian Government. On Sunday families of crew members of the missing flight MH370 alleged that the MAS management had abandoned them because they had sought legal recourse with foreign law firms. They claimed that MAS had sent them an email on May 16 asking them to instruct their lawyers to deal directly with the company’s legal team in relation to their demands regarding the aircraft. They also claimed that the MAS management had stopped the caregiver services in furnishing information on the search mission.
MH370: Chinese 'Zhu Kezhen' ship to conduct sea bed survey-Astro Awani | Updated: May 19, 2014
KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities conducting the search for the missing flight MH370 will send a Chinese survey ship to conduct a 'bathymetric survey' to map out the sea bed in the Southern Indian Ocean. The ship "Zhu Kezhen" will have to undertake an extensive mapping of the seabed at the area identified by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), according to a statement by the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC).Malaysian, Australian and Chinese authorities who met over the weekend in Fremantle had decided on this survey on Sunday."Zhu Kezhen is scheduled to sail for the survey area on Wednesday, weather permitting," said the JACC.Bathymetry is the study of underwater depth of lake or ocean floors. The said survey is one of the main priorities given in the search for the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight.
Transition phase
Other priorities include re-analysing available data to verify a more accurate search area as well as identifying and deploying relevant towed and autonomous underwater vehicles. The search now in its ‘transition phase’ that prioritises ocean floor search, with all other land and surface searches called off.Beijing-bound Flight MH370 with 239 people on board vanished from radar screens on March 8 while over the South China Sea, less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.A massive multinational search was launched, first in the South China Sea and later extended to the Strait of Melaka and Andaman Sea, before search teams shifted their attention to the waters off western Australia in the Southern Indian Ocean, half way to Antarctica.
Repairs needed for Ocean Shield
Meanwhile, JACC said the Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Ocean Shield arrived at Geraldton, Western Australia, yesterday to begin preparations to receive spare parts for transponders mounted on the Ocean Shield and the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Bluefin-21."The repairs are necessary to correct a hardware issue affecting the ability of the transponders to communicate with each other during dives. The problem became apparent during Bluefin-21's last mission on Tuesday," it said. The spare parts are expected to arrive in Geraldton later on Monday.JACC said once the replacement parts were installed, testing would be conducted at Geraldton prior to Ocean Shield transiting back to the search area.
