Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli): the "Good Pope", was born in Sotto il Monte (BG) on November 25, 1881. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000. In his beatification homily, Pope John XXIII described him as "the Pope who impressed the world with his natural friendliness, from which the remarkable goodness of his soul radiated." In less than five years of his pontificate, "Pope John" had won everyone's heart, thanks to the simplicity of his actions and his words.
John Paul II (Karol Jozef Wojtyla):, was beatified little more than six years after his death. Pope Benedict XVI set the date of his liturgical memorial on October 22. In his homily during the beatification ceremony, Ratzinger said that from the very day of his death "we perceived the fragrance of his sanctity, and in any number of ways God's People showed their veneration for him. For this reason, with all due respect for the Church's canonical norms, I wanted his cause of beatification to move forward with reasonable haste. And now the longed-for day has come; it came quickly because this is what was pleasing to the Lord: John Paul II is beatified!"

What is the significance to the Jewish People and to Israel of the canonization by the Catholic Church of John XXIII and John Paul II? Why have representative Jewish leaders from different parts of the world felt impelled, as Jews, to participate personally at a Christian religious ceremony in St. Peter’s Square? A group of 18 delegates from the U.S., Israel, Argentina, Poland and Italy will be present on Sunday. They have come, simply to honor the memory of these two Popes who played fundamental roles in transforming relations between Catholics and Jews in the past century.Rabbi David Rosen, the International Director for Interreligious Affairs of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and Advisor to Israel’s Chief Rabbinate, explains why it was important for him to travel to Rome from Jerusalem for this event.“Judaism teaches the importance of "hakarat hatov" which means paying recognition to those who have done kindnesses for you. No two Popes did more to transform the teaching of the Catholic Church towards Jews, Judaism and Israel from one of hostility to love and respect. By attending this event, I am paying respects to the memories of the two great heroes of Catholic-Jewish reconciliation.“I am not participating as a Catholic, nor affirming any Catholic doctrine by being present but only showing respect and gratitude to these two men and the new age of Catholic-Jewish relations they led” specifies rabbi Rosen. Although sainthood is not institutionally recognized by Judaism, “it is not exactly true to say ‘Jews do not believe in saints’” says Rosen. “The word ‘’k’doshim’ is actually the name of the Shabbat portion we will read in synagogue and it means ‘saints’ or more precisely ‘holy ones’ and all Jews are commanded to be holy. Certainly we refer to the pious of the past and especially those who were martyred for their commitment to Judaism, as ‘k’doshim’ means saints. However, it is indeed a different concept from the term as used in Christianity.”Abraham Skorka, the Argentinian rabbi who is a personal friend of Francis and who co-authored a book with Jorge Mario Bergoglio entitled “On Heaven and Earth”, when he was still Archbishop of Buenos Aires, points out that the two new saints “both had a special commitment towards the Jewish People. The steps they took during their papacies created a new reality in Jewish-Catholic relations. Their canonization is also a recognition of their deeds, propelled by feelings of love and a desire for justice for all humanity.”Rabbi Skorka agrees that while the theological aspects of their sainthood cannot be shared by Jews, “our presence here is a sign and testimony of our recognition and gratitude for the positive actions of John XXIII and John Paul II for the Jews and for the entire world.”Israel’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Zion Evrony, who will be in St. Peter’s Square Sunday together with his wife Rita, points out that Israel will be represented not only by himself but also by Oded Wiener, the head of the Cabinet of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate.“Both Popes were friends of the Jewish People and paved the way for a new approach and new attitudes of respect of the Catholic Church towards Judaism.” The Ambassador recalls that “during John Paul II’s pontificate, diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel were established, and he was also the first Pope to visit the Yad Vashem Memorial to the Shoah in Jerusalem; the first to pray at the Western Wall and the first to pay an official visit to a synagogue.”“John XXIII” continues Ambassador Evrony, “initiated the Second Vatican Council and furthered the writing and the promulgation of ‘Nostra Aetate”, the document on non-Christian relations with a special section on Jews, that overturned the Catholic Church’s former, centuries-old positions of disdain. During this brief private encounter, Isaac presented Pope Roncalli with documentation on the Christian roots of anti-Semitism based on his research and entitled “the teaching of contempt”This memorandum, together with John XXIII’s own personal experiences as Apostolic Nuncio in Turkey during the war when he intervened to save Jewish lives, became a turning-point, the catalyzing force and inspiration for a growing commitment to healing the wounds inflicted by Christian churches on the Jewish People throughout much of history.The Jewish delegates will be present to give witness that John XXIII and John Paul II were the Popes that played the greatest role in initiating, developing and perpetuating the new friendship and solidarity between Catholics and Jews. The Pope Emeritus will concelebrate. This does not mean that he will be at the Altar; It is likely Cardinals Sodano and Re, Cardinal Dziwisz, Cardinal Vallini and the Bishop of Bergamo will be at the alter. rome-Ireland’s Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny will be among the official delegates from more than 90 countries at the canonization ceremony in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, April 27, when Pope Francis will declare that John XXIII and John Paul II are saints.The Irish leader’s presence at the Vatican for the ceremony presided over by Pope Francis is, of course, first and foremost a mark of tribute to John Paul II who visited the country in 1979, and was given an enthusiastic welcome throughout the emerald isle. But, Kenny’s presence can also be seen as taking on a particular significance for Ireland-Holy See relations.It will be remembered that Kenny, as head of the Irish Government, harshly attacked the Vatican in the Irish parliament (the ‘Dail’), July 2011, charging that it had badly mishandled the sexual abuse of minors by priests in the Irish Republic, that it had given negative instructions to the bishops there, and had not really cooperated with the Government’s investigations into this whole problem, most recently in the diocese of Cloyne. In November of that same year, the Government took the controversial decision to close Ireland’s Embassy to the Holy See in Rome after 82 years, ‘for economic reasons’ it said. All this marked the lowest point in Irish-Holy See relations since the Irish Republic was established.All that is now history now, however, because on 21 January of this year the Irish Government, in the midst an improved economic situation, decided to re-open its embassy to the Holy See and appoint a resident ambassador once again. Explaining its decision, which was warmly welcomed by the Holy See, the Department of Foreign Affairs said that the reopening of the embassy “will enable Ireland to engage directly with the leadership of Pope Francis on the issues of poverty eradication, hunger and human rights."Mr. Kenny’s presence at the canonization ceremony can therefore also be seen as a formal gesture of reconciliation, and a clear desire of his Government for constructive, friendly cooperation with the Holy See.The Irish Taoiseach, along with the heads of other delegations, is likely to meet Pope Francis at the end of the ceremony in the Vatican. It would come as no surprise if he were to take the opportunity then to make known his Government’s willingness to welcome the Argentinean Pope to Ireland, where he is very popular and greatly admired.Apart from the Irish leader, no less than 19 heads of State and 25 heads of Government are among the more than 90 official state delegations at the canonization ceremony that is expected to attract around a million people from all continents.Not surprisingly, the President of Poland, Ewa Kopacz, as well as the President of the Senate, Bodan Borusewicz, and two former Polish Presidents, Lech Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski, will be present with hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens for the canonization of the greatest Pole in history, John Paul II. He was pope for almost 27 years (1978-2005) and is remembered worldwide for having pardoned his would-be assassin, visited 129 countries, spoken to some 25 million young people at 19 World Youth Days, and for being the first Pope to enter a synagogue and a mosque.Several hundred thousand Italians are also expected to attend Sunday’s ceremony, together with the country’s President Giorgio Napolitano, 88, for the canonization of John XXIII. He was Pope from 1958-63, and is gratefully remembered for having called the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) which transformed the face of the Catholic Church and its relationship with the modern world, for his peace initiative at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, and his famous encyclical – “Peace on Earth”, published shortly before he died in 1963.Among the many state delegations at the canonization ceremony and mass, the British Government’s one will be led by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, while the USA will be represented by John Podesta, an advisor to President Obama. Zimbabwe’s long-time President Robert Mugabe will also attend the ceremony, as will the Prime Minister of the Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who had a private meeting with Pope Francis on the eve of this mega event. Undoubtedly, however, the one who is likely to attract most attention from the 2,000 journalists present will be Benedict XVI, the emeritus Pope, who, together with cardinals and bishops, will concelebrate at the mass led by Pope Francis on this historic “day of the four popes” as it has become known in Rome.

Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli): the "Good Pope", was born in Sotto il Monte (BG) on November 25, 1881. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000. In his beatification homily, Pope John XXIII described him as "the Pope who impressed the world with his natural friendliness, from which the remarkable goodness of his soul radiated." In less than five years of his pontificate, "Pope John" had won everyone's heart, thanks to the simplicity of his actions and his words.
John Paul II (Karol Jozef Wojtyla):, was beatified little more than six years after his death. Pope Benedict XVI set the date of his liturgical memorial on October 22. In his homily during the beatification ceremony, Ratzinger said that from the very day of his death "we perceived the fragrance of his sanctity, and in any number of ways God's People showed their veneration for him. For this reason, with all due respect for the Church's canonical norms, I wanted his cause of beatification to move forward with reasonable haste. And now the longed-for day has come; it came quickly because this is what was pleasing to the Lord: John Paul II is beatified!"

What is the significance to the Jewish People and to Israel of the canonization by the Catholic Church of John XXIII and John Paul II? Why have representative Jewish leaders from different parts of the world felt impelled, as Jews, to participate personally at a Christian religious ceremony in St. Peter’s Square? A group of 18 delegates from the U.S., Israel, Argentina, Poland and Italy will be present on Sunday. They have come, simply to honor the memory of these two Popes who played fundamental roles in transforming relations between Catholics and Jews in the past century.Rabbi David Rosen, the International Director for Interreligious Affairs of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and Advisor to Israel’s Chief Rabbinate, explains why it was important for him to travel to Rome from Jerusalem for this event.“Judaism teaches the importance of "hakarat hatov" which means paying recognition to those who have done kindnesses for you. No two Popes did more to transform the teaching of the Catholic Church towards Jews, Judaism and Israel from one of hostility to love and respect. By attending this event, I am paying respects to the memories of the two great heroes of Catholic-Jewish reconciliation.“I am not participating as a Catholic, nor affirming any Catholic doctrine by being present but only showing respect and gratitude to these two men and the new age of Catholic-Jewish relations they led” specifies rabbi Rosen. Although sainthood is not institutionally recognized by Judaism, “it is not exactly true to say ‘Jews do not believe in saints’” says Rosen. “The word ‘’k’doshim’ is actually the name of the Shabbat portion we will read in synagogue and it means ‘saints’ or more precisely ‘holy ones’ and all Jews are commanded to be holy. Certainly we refer to the pious of the past and especially those who were martyred for their commitment to Judaism, as ‘k’doshim’ means saints. However, it is indeed a different concept from the term as used in Christianity.”Abraham Skorka, the Argentinian rabbi who is a personal friend of Francis and who co-authored a book with Jorge Mario Bergoglio entitled “On Heaven and Earth”, when he was still Archbishop of Buenos Aires, points out that the two new saints “both had a special commitment towards the Jewish People. The steps they took during their papacies created a new reality in Jewish-Catholic relations. During this brief private encounter, Isaac presented Pope Roncalli with documentation on the Christian roots of anti-Semitism based on his research and entitled “the teaching of contempt”This memorandum, together with John XXIII’s own personal experiences as Apostolic Nuncio in Turkey during the war when he intervened to save Jewish lives, became a turning-point, the catalyzing force and inspiration for a growing commitment to healing the wounds inflicted by Christian churches on the Jewish People throughout much of history.The Jewish delegates will be present to give witness that John XXIII and John Paul II were the Popes that played the greatest role in initiating, developing and perpetuating the new friendship and solidarity between Catholics and Jews. In many ways, moreover, the Catholic Church is today regarded by Jews as a prime ally for the survival of Jewish civilization and culture in the diaspora as well as in Israel.Amongst others and in addition to Rabbis Rosen and Skorka, Ambassador Evrony and Oded Wiener from Israel, the delegation will include the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, nine representatives of the Argentinian Jewish community, two Italian rabbinical delegates and an American rabbi representing all branches of U.S. Judaism..

The news was officially announced by the Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, during his daily news briefing.“ The Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has accepted the invitation and communicated to Pope Francis that he will attend the Mass of Canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII. The Pope Emeritus will concelebrate. This does not mean that he will be at the Altar; It is likely Cardinals Sodano and Re, Cardinal Dziwisz, Cardinal Vallini and the Bishop of Bergamo will be at the alter. The Pope Emeritus, however, will be together with the Cardinals and Bishops on the left side of the Sanctuary and we will all be glad to have him there.”John XXIII’s relic will be carried by four grandchildren from the Roncalli family, the mayor of Sotto il Monte - Roncalli’s hometown – and the director of the John XXIII foundation. John Paul II’s relic will be carried by Fliberth Mora Diaz, the Costa Rican woman whose miraculous and inexplicable healing made Wojtyla’s canonization possible. She will be accompanied by her family. Marie Simone Pierre - the nun whose miraculous healing led to John Paul II’s beatification – will read out an intention in French during the Prayer of the Faithful. Straight after the mass, the tombs of the two Popes will be open for veneration in the Vatican Basilica, until 10 pm.

rome-Ireland’s Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny will be among the official delegates from more than 90 countries at the canonization ceremony in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, April 27, when Pope Francis will declare that John XXIII and John Paul II are saints.The Irish leader’s presence at the Vatican for the ceremony presided over by Pope Francis is, of course, first and foremost a mark of tribute to John Paul II who visited the country in 1979, and was given an enthusiastic welcome throughout the emerald isle. But, Kenny’s presence can also be seen as taking on a particular significance for Ireland-Holy See relations.It will be remembered that Kenny, as head of the Irish Government, harshly attacked the Vatican in the Irish parliament (the ‘Dail’), July 2011, charging that it had badly mishandled the sexual abuse of minors by priests in the Irish Republic, that it had given negative instructions to the bishops there, and had not really cooperated with the Government’s investigations into this whole problem, most recently in the diocese of Cloyne. In November of that same year, the Government took the controversial decision to close Ireland’s Embassy to the Holy See in Rome after 82 years, ‘for economic reasons’ it said. All this marked the lowest point in Irish-Holy See relations since the Irish Republic was established.All that is now history now, however, because on 21 January of this year the Irish Government, in the midst an improved economic situation, decided to re-open its embassy to the Holy See and appoint a resident ambassador once again. Explaining its decision, which was warmly welcomed by the Holy See, the Department of Foreign Affairs said that the reopening of the embassy “will enable Ireland to engage directly with the leadership of Pope Francis on the issues of poverty eradication, hunger and human rights."Mr. Kenny’s presence at the canonization ceremony can therefore also be seen as a formal gesture of reconciliation, and a clear desire of his Government for constructive, friendly cooperation with the Holy See.The Irish Taoiseach, along with the heads of other delegations, is likely to meet Pope Francis at the end of the ceremony in the Vatican. It would come as no surprise if he were to take the opportunity then to make known his Government’s willingness to welcome the Argentinean Pope to Ireland, where he is very popular and greatly admired.Apart from the Irish leader, no less than 19 heads of State and 25 heads of Government are among the more than 90 official state delegations at the canonization ceremony that is expected to attract around a million people from all continents.Not surprisingly, the President of Poland, Ewa Kopacz, as well as the President of the Senate, Bodan Borusewicz, and two former Polish Presidents, Lech Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski, will be present with hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens for the canonization of the greatest Pole in history, John Paul II. He was pope for almost 27 years (1978-2005) and is remembered worldwide for having pardoned his would-be assassin, visited 129 countries, spoken to some 25 million young people at 19 World Youth Days, and for being the first Pope to enter a synagogue and a mosque.Several hundred thousand Italians are also expected to attend Sunday’s ceremony, together with the country’s President Giorgio Napolitano, 88, for the canonization of John XXIII. He was Pope from 1958-63, and is gratefully remembered for having called the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) which transformed the face of the Catholic Church and its relationship with the modern world, for his peace initiative at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, and his famous encyclical – “Peace on Earth”, published shortly before he died in 1963.Among the many state delegations at the canonization ceremony and mass, the British Government’s one will be led by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, while the USA will be represented by John Podesta, an advisor to President Obama. Zimbabwe’s long-time President Robert Mugabe will also attend the ceremony, as will the Prime Minister of the Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who had a private meeting with Pope Francis on the eve of this mega event. Undoubtedly, however, the one who is likely to attract most attention from the 2,000 journalists present will be Benedict XVI, the emeritus Pope, who, together with cardinals and bishops, will concelebrate at the mass led by Pope Francis on this historic “day of the four popes” as it has become known in Rome.
