Former FBI Counterterrorism expert John Guandolo, known for his controversial calls for Americans to "expose Al Qaeda agents" in their neighborhoods, has reiterated his calls to the public to pressure officials to prosecute the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for supporting terrorism.In an interview with Arutz Sheva, the author of the book explained how CAIR - which claims to be a "civil liberties" organization representing moderate Muslims in the US - was established by Islamist leaders closely linked to the radical Muslim Brotherhood, of which Hamas is an offshoot. The organization was set up specifically to provide propaganda and other forms of nonviolent support for Hamas, which is a designated terrorist group in the US.The Brotherhood first established a presence in the US in the 1950s, and by the 1960s had set up several front groups, including the US-Palestine Committee. The Secretariat for the Economy, essentially the Vatican “ministry of finance”, was established just a few days ago and Australian cardinal George Pell chosen as its head.The other cardinals besides Marx who will form the new Council are: the Archbishop of Lima Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne; the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Daniel N. DiNardo; the Archbishop of Durban Wilfrid Fox Napier; the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Jean-Pierre Ricard; the Archbishop of Mexico, Norberto Rivera Carrera; the Bishop of Hong Kong, John Tong Hon and the Vicar of Rome, Agostino Vallini. A part from the first two, Marx and DiNardo, the other six cardinals had all been members of the Council of 15 that was looking into the Holy See’s economic and administrative affairs. There is a full awareness of the web’s limits and dangers but also of its positive aspects given that it offers men and women a wealth of possibilities in terms of knowledge and relationships. The Holy Father encourages Catholics not to promote religious values through superficial propaganda but to be real witnesses of the human and Christian values we carry in our hearts. “Francis has got everyone used to his style, enlivening his concept of communication. The Church is immersed in today’s reality and digital culture. Technology is part of our life, making it possible to contact others and express closeness instantaneously, albeit not physically. The possibilities for continuous communication are therefore greater than ever and it is easier to enter into contact with worlds and people who are miles away from us. Francis guides us through this new reality with his own informal style; he makes us reflect on the dialogical and interpersonal dimension of communications tools. The Pope shows us that, technology aside, the aim in every situation is to be able to engage in dialogue with men and women of today in order to understand their expectations, doubts and hopes.”

Berlin - The governor of the Cypriot central bank, Panicos Demetriades, on Monday (10 March) resigned after being investigated over a secret deal he negotiated with an American consultancy firm in connection with his country's €10bn bailout.Demetriades handed in his resignation to the Cypriot finance minister while in Brussels, where eurozone finance ministers were meeting on Monday.Quoting a source who saw the letter, Reuters said Demetriades cited “family and personal” reasons for his departure, and “difficulty in cooperating with the board of directors” of the Central Bank.The board last year issued an internal report seen by EUobserver examining the circumstances in which Demetriades had agreed to a secret fee for Alvarez& Marsal, the consultancy hired by the Central Bank to evaluate the gap needed to be filled in the Cypriot banking sector.The audit claimed Demetriades kept the board in the dark about the secret fee, which would have included a cut from the seized deposits that were part of the bailout deal. Demetriades said he had to agree to the fee, because he was threatened by Alvarez&Marsal they would leave Cyprus at the height of the bailout negotiations.According to the Cyprus Mail newspaper, the prosecutor's office in Cyprus has dropped the charges in the Alvarez&Marsal affair, but stressed this had nothing to do with his resignation.

Former FBI Counterterrorism expert John Guandolo, known for his controversial calls for Americans to "expose Al Qaeda agents" in their neighborhoods, has reiterated his calls to the public to pressure officials to prosecute the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for supporting terrorism.In an interview with Arutz Sheva, the author of the book explained how CAIR - which claims to be a "civil liberties" organization representing moderate Muslims in the US - was established by Islamist leaders closely linked to the radical Muslim Brotherhood, of which Hamas is an offshoot. The organization was set up specifically to provide propaganda and other forms of nonviolent support for Hamas, which is a designated terrorist group in the US.The Brotherhood first established a presence in the US in the 1950s, and by the 1960s had set up several front groups, including the US-Palestine Committee. Guandolo describes how the FBI documented a key meeting of the Committee in 1993 at which the two men who would later found CAIR - Omar Ahmad and Nihad Awad - were present.At the meeting, "those two men specifically discussed with other Hamas leaders creating a public relations front for Hamas that wasn't affiliated with Hamas," Guandolo relates, "and less than a year later CAIR is created in Washington D.C."Since then, he says, CAIR has actively supported Hamas in the US, and should qualify for prosecution for providing material support to a terrorist group as a result.He points out that the organization is among several "unindicted conspirators" in the 15-year investigation surrounding the Holy Land Foundation, which in 2001 was shut down after being designated as a terrorist organization by the US government.Faced with the evidence, Guandolo says he can't understand why the group is still operating legally."The question we as Americans need to be asking is: 'Why is this Attorney General and Department of Justice not indicting and prosecuting CAIR and its leaders?'"

The Secretariat for the Economy, essentially the Vatican “ministry of finance”, was established just a few days ago and Australian cardinal George Pell chosen as its head.The other cardinals besides Marx who will form the new Council are: the Archbishop of Lima Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne; the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Daniel N. DiNardo; the Archbishop of Durban Wilfrid Fox Napier; the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Jean-Pierre Ricard; the Archbishop of Mexico, Norberto Rivera Carrera; the Bishop of Hong Kong, John Tong Hon and the Vicar of Rome, Agostino Vallini. A part from the first two, Marx and DiNardo, the other six cardinals had all been members of the Council of 15 that was looking into the Holy See’s economic and administrative affairs. Francis did away with this Council and in recent days established the new “ministry of finance”. So the cardinals have been dealing with the Vatican’s economic and financial issues for a while now. Francis is an active Twitter user and the Vatican is looking into the possibility of creating a Facebook page for him. Do social networks present us with more opportunities or risks?
“Social networks can be new spaces for evangelisation. Benedict XVI emphasised that the digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual universe but is part of everyday reality of many people, particularly young people ... There is a full awareness of the web’s limits and dangers but also of its positive aspects given that it offers men and women a wealth of possibilities in terms of knowledge and relationships. This is why Francis has asked Catholics to get involved and be present on the web. The issue that arises is what kind of a presence they should have. The Holy Father encourages Catholics not to promote religious values through superficial propaganda but to be real witnesses of the human and Christian values we carry in our hearts. Yet again the Pope helps us understand that what counts is personal testimony and that social networks can be an ideal place to share this personal testimony.”
How would you weigh up Francis’ first year in communications terms?
“Francis has got everyone used to his style, enlivening his concept of communication. He is aware that the biggest risk for a preacher is getting used to his own language and thinking that everyone will use it and understand it just like that. Simplicity is to do with the kind of language used. It must be a language all audiences can understand so as to avoid the risk of talking to a wall. The Church is immersed in today’s reality and digital culture. Technology is part of our life, making it possible to contact others and express closeness instantaneously, albeit not physically. The possibilities for continuous communication are therefore greater than ever and it is easier to enter into contact with worlds and people who are miles away from us. Francis guides us through this new reality with his own informal style; he makes us reflect on the dialogical and interpersonal dimension of communications tools. The Pope shows us that, technology aside, the aim in every situation is to be able to engage in dialogue with men and women of today in order to understand their expectations, doubts and hopes.”
What is Francis’ communication style?
“The Pope uses a peaceful, cordial and direct kind of language that is in tune with the style of his pontificate as a whole. Francis is aware that today’s information-focused society is indiscriminately saturated by all kinds of information and sometimes leads us to address certain fundamental questions superficially. This is why the Pope believes real education is needed, so that people are taught to think critically and offered the chance to develop values in an appropriate way. He teaches us that a missionary pastoral care programme is not obsessed with the disjointed transmission of a multitude of doctrines which are persistently imposed on people.”
Is there an image that encapsulates Bergoglio’s vision as communicator?
“When Francis met young university students in Rome in November, he told them not to just observe life as if from “a balcony” but to “mingle where challenges are to be pursued: life, development, the struggle for human dignity, against poverty, for values.” The news is full of stories of suffering in all corners of the world, stories of wars, divisions, intolerance and exploitation and all appears as a sign of people turning their back on each other, whether they are far away or close by. We can only break down the walls that divide us if we are ready to listen to one another and learn from each other ... Francis’ words are a beacon. Our light should not be the result of tricks or special effects; it should come from being close to the wounded we find along our journey, showing love and tenderness. Don’t be afraid to become citizens of the digital world. A Church that accompanies people on their journey should be able to walk with everyone...”
What is the vision of this Catholic Pope who converses with the world?
“Every day the Pope gives us phrases that become a beacon that casts light upon our missionary journey through the vast ocean of life. The Pope shares his thoughts on this constantly evolving technological landscape that offers a wealth of opportunities. But the human element in this is fundamental and he often stresses this. Francis’ ecclesiology has been clear to all right from the start of his pontificate. Francis’ ideal Church is eager to communicate; it is keen to enter into dialogue with modern men and women, so it feels it is called to consider certain dimensions and needs of the culture of encounter. We live in a world that is immersed in an image-dominated culture, we constantly produce images through all sorts of means; we use them in our conversations and to share thoughts and emotions. The announcement of a message should concentrate on the essential, on what is most beautiful, big and attractive but at the same time on what is essential. So a message should be simple but this should not take away from the depth and truth that make it convincing.”

Berlin - The governor of the Cypriot central bank, Panicos Demetriades, on Monday (10 March) resigned after being investigated over a secret deal he negotiated with an American consultancy firm in connection with his country's €10bn bailout.Demetriades handed in his resignation to the Cypriot finance minister while in Brussels, where eurozone finance ministers were meeting on Monday.Quoting a source who saw the letter, Reuters said Demetriades cited “family and personal” reasons for his departure, and “difficulty in cooperating with the board of directors” of the Central Bank.The board last year issued an internal report seen by EUobserver examining the circumstances in which Demetriades had agreed to a secret fee for Alvarez& Marsal, the consultancy hired by the Central Bank to evaluate the gap needed to be filled in the Cypriot banking sector.The audit claimed Demetriades kept the board in the dark about the secret fee, which would have included a cut from the seized deposits that were part of the bailout deal. Demetriades said he had to agree to the fee, because he was threatened by Alvarez&Marsal they would leave Cyprus at the height of the bailout negotiations.According to the Cyprus Mail newspaper, the prosecutor's office in Cyprus has dropped the charges in the Alvarez&Marsal affair, but stressed this had nothing to do with his resignation.
Demetriades will receive a severance pay of €250,000, the same paper reports. Demetriades was under pressure to resign already last year when the scandal about the payment broke. He allegedly asked for €1 million in severance pay.Demetriades was in his post for two years, after being appointed by the previous - left-wing - administration. He had publicly fallen out with the current Conservative President, Nicos Anastasiades.The row between the two raised concerns in the European Central Bank, which stressed the importance of national central banks being independent from their governments.The ECB "took note" of Demetriades' resignation and said he "played an important role in the implementation of the adjustment programme.”“We count on a fruitful cooperation with his successor,” an ECB spokesperson said on Monday.Meanwhile, eurozone finance ministers said Cyprus was "on track" in its reforms and could receive the next tranche of bailout loans, amounting to €150 million.
