Iran and Russia are in
negotiations over the construction of a second nuclear power plant in
Bushehr province, according to a senior Russian official.The
deputy head of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom)
Nikolai Spassky said the talks were at a “working stage.”“We are discussing the possibility of
continuing our cooperation with Iran,” he added in comments quoted by
RIA Novosti. “Any partnership if we agree, must and will comply with
Russia’s international obligations and should be cost-effective.”Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency carried
Spassky’s comments with the headline: “Official: Russia to Help Iran
Build 2nd N. Power Plant in Bushehr,” implying that negotiations were
further along than the Russian official indicated. Iranian President
Hassan Rouhani had announced plans to build a second reactor in Bushehr in December.In related news, Moscow panned on Friday Washington’s expansion of existing Iran sanctions lists.On Thursday, the US Treasury and State
Departments announced the addition of several individuals and firms to
those lists, a move which the Russian Foreign Ministry called
“unacceptable.”In a statement, the ministry said the
expansion of sanctions went against the progress of ongoing negotiations
over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.“We have said repeatedly that such decisions
contradict the spirit of the Geneva agreements, where it is stipulated
in particular that Washington refrains from introducing new sanctions
related to the nuclear activities of Tehran,” the statement read.
“We consider the step made to be unacceptable and that it contradicts international law.”As part of an interim deal reached in
November, Iran must largely suspend progress on its nuclear program in
exchange for limited sanctions relief. The US Congress has been mulling
additional sanctions legislation that would go into effect should Tehran
fail to comply with the terms reached in Geneva, a measure which the

said Saturday that Israeli and Palestinian leaders will have a chance
to “express reservations” on the American peace framework agreement that
will be the basis of ongoing talks — even though members of both
negotiating teams have stated that giving the leaders a chance to voice
dissent could be a mistake.Speaking during an interview with The Washington Post’s David Ignatius,
Kerry argued that, for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, such caveats provide “the
only way for them to politically be able to keep the negotiations
moving… For them as leaders to be able to embrace an endgame, they need
to have the right to be able to have some objection.”The secretary also touched on Abbas’s recent
statements in support of a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the
Jordan Valley over five years and in acceptance of NATO troops as a
potential buffer force in the absence of the IDF.Abbas
recently stated he would agree to a NATO force in the Jordan Valley as a
way of assuaging Israeli fears that the potentially porous border
between Jordan and a future Palestinian state would allow the transfer
of weapons and terror activists.Abbas also said that the IDF could patrol the border areas for up to three years after the signing of a peace treaty. He later told The New York Times a withdrawal over five years would be acceptable too.An earlier American proposal that Israel
station IDF soldiers in the Jordan Valley for the first 10 years after
the signing of a peace deal with the Palestinians garnered angry
reactions from Palestinian leaders in December.“Netanyahu has made it clear he doesn’t want

trying to fan the flames of threats against Israel’s economy.”On Friday, however, Foreign Minister Avigdor
Liberman extolled the US secretary at a trade conference in Tel Aviv. “I
want to make something clear,” he said: “Kerry is a true friend of
Israel. What’s the point of turning friends into enemies? “John Kerry is leading the process correctly,”
he continued. “We are now creating principles with the Americans in
order to negotiate directly with the Palestinians, based on them.”Later Friday, the State Department welcomed
Liberman’s praise of the secretary. “We certainly welcomed his remarks
and his sentiment and the importance of the peace process, and it’s a
reflection of, of course, the belief of many people in Israel that a
two-state solution is the right outcome at the end of this process,”

WASHINGTON — Two leading
American Orthodox bodies rebuked a group of Israeli rabbis who warned of
divine retribution against Secretary of State John Kerry.“While
the people of Israel and Jews around the world may properly possess
serious concerns about proposals Secretary Kerry is putting forth, such
concerns must only be expressed with civility and on the substance of
the issues, not degenerating into personal venom and threats,” said a
statement posted Feb. 5 by the Rabbinical Council of America and the
Orthodox Union.The two Orthodox groups were responding to a
letter put out by the Committee to Save the Land and People of Israel.
The committee’s letter likened Kerry to Nebuchadnezzer, the Babylonian
king who destroyed the First Temple, and warns him to “immediately halt
this process of destruction,” referring to his peace push, in order to
“prevent heavy divine retribution, God forbid, on all those associated
with you.”
A statement on the committee’s website says
“dozens” of rabbis signed a letter to Kerry but names only five,
affiliated with various Israeli municipalities.“The letter of the ‘Committee to Save the Land
and People of Israel’ may represent the views of its signators,” the
RCA and O.U. statement said. “It does not represent ours.”

Ehud Olmert said Friday that if the current Israeli leadership could
create the same kind of trusting relationship he built up with
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, a deal along the lines he
proposed five years ago could be possible.In
the best case scenario, Abbas would take the deal, Olmert said. But if
Abbas rejected it, Israel’s international position would improve
drastically because it would be seen to have genuinely sought a viable
agreement, he said.Olmert — who stepped down from the prime
ministership to fight a number of legal cases but has not ruled out a
return to politics — said he still didn’t know why Abbas had failed to
accept the peace terms he offered in late 2008, but said Abbas has since
said that a deal could have been done had Olmert remained in power for
another three months.
Olmert said he respected current Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and believed Netanyahu truly “wants to
reach an accord,” but that the prime minister’s positions were far from
the possible basis of a viable deal. “His suggestions are a vast
distance from what everybody understands is the basis on which an accord
can be reached,” said Olmert.Olmert also said the Palestinian were sick of
looking out of their homes “and seeing Israeli guns directed at them,”
as had been the case “for almost 50 years.”Relating to some of the core disputes at the
heart of the current Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, Olmert said the
Israeli security establishment had drawn up plans that would enable an
Israeli withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, with provisions for emergency
action should enemy forces threaten that eastern border. Netanyahu has
been insisting on a long-term IDF presence in the Jordan Valley, while
Abbas has said troops could stay for no more than five years after a
deal is signed.Olmert also said he believed the issue of
Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state would not prevent an
accord if most other terms were agreed. If this issue was one of the
few remaining points, said Olmert, “this point will be solved to our
satisfaction.”And he said that, under his terms, 80,000
settlers would have had to leave their homes, in settlements in what
would become Palestinian sovereign areas, but that “they could all have
been resettled in areas we were keeping [elsewhere] in Judea and
Samaria.”Olmert said he had told Abbas that Israel
would never accept the demand for a “right of return” for Palestinian
refugees, and that Abbas once told him, “I don’t want to change the
nature of the state of Israel” — reflecting an apparent acknowledgement
that Israel could not be flooded with large numbers of Palestinian
refugees and their descendants. Olmert said he also told Abbas he would
not let Palestinians enter Israel on the basis of family reunification —
since, he joked to Abbas, “every family with you is 50,000 people.”
Rather, Olmert agreed to accept 1,000 Palestinians per year, for five
years, as “individual humanitarian cases.”Olmert’s offer, as previously confirmed by the former prime minister, provided the Palestinians a state with a sovereign share of Jerusalem and 100% of the West Bank, with one-for-one land swaps. Olmert was ready to relinquish sovereignty in the Old City, in favor of an international trusteeship.Abbas made a hasty sketch of Olmert’s proposal,
which includes no place names, when they met in September 2008 to
discuss it. The sketch indicates that Olmert was willing to more or less
return to the pre-1967 lines, while maintaining the Gush Etzion
settlement bloc south of Jerusalem, the settlement city of Ma’aleh
Adumim to the east, and a slice of territory that apparently would

he had met with Abbas 36 times and discussed the most sensitive national

agree to it.” But Abbas said, “I need to have some things explained to

say yes,” said Olmert.He hinted that “certain Israeli sources”
advised Abbas not to sign — an apparent reference to oft-repeated
reports that Tzipi Livni, the current Israeli justice minister and chief
peace negotiator who took over from Olmert as head of their Kadima
party when he resigned, encouraged Abbas not to accept the Olmert deal.
Olmert did not mention Livni by name.Olmert also lambasted hawkish Israeli
politicians who in recent days have slammed Abbas as an anti-Semite, and
who have also castigated Secretary of State John Kerry over his peace
efforts. He noted Kerry’s “100 percent voting record” of support for
Israel and asked, “Is there anyone in the whole world who could be more
supportive” of Israel? Kerry, said Olmert, is “our deepest friend.”

The speaker of Iran’s
parliament criticized Israel and the United States during a ceremony in
honor of Tunisia’s new constitution on Friday, causing the American
delegation to walk out of the celebrations, Reuters reports.Addressing the ceremony at the
National Assembly in Tunis, Ali Larijani referred to Israel as a
"cancer" in the region. He accused the Jewish state and the United
States of trying to "sterilize" the Arab Spring revolutions.Larijani charged, according to an Arab translation of his speech quoted by AFP,
that Israel and the United States had "tried to render these (Arab)
revolutions sterile, and to make them deviate from their course so that
Israel can benefit."The American embassy in Tunis said following the incident, "What was
intended to be a ceremony honoring Tunisia's achievements was used by
the Iranian representative as a platform to denounce the United States.”"The U.S. representatives present at the NCA departed the ceremony
due to the false accusations and inappropriate comments made by the
Iranian representative present regarding the United States," added the
statement, quoted by AFP.Deputy Assistant Secretary for Maghreb Affairs and Egypt, William Roebuck, was Washington's top representative at the ceremony, which was also attended by African and Arab leaders, as well as French President Francois Hollande.Larijani is no stranger to anti-Israel statements. Earlier this week, during a meeting in Tehran with the leader of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group, the Iranian speaker said that armed warfare against the "Zionist regime"
is the only way to "free Palestine," and that Iran's policy has always
been the "defense of the Muslim peoples, and particularly the rights of
the Palestinian people under occupation."Larijani further claimed that the "occupation" is trying to weaken
the Islamic opposition and make it forget the reasons to "free
Palestine," and called for unity and solidarity against the "pompous
forces" of the West and Israel who are trying to capitalize on
"differences of opinion" in the Muslim world.Another Iranian official, Hossein Salami of the Iranian Revolutionary
Guards, said last week that "if the Islamic nation would unite, it
could minimize the breathing room of the U.S. and the West until the Zionist regime would no longer have room to breathe."

Dutch Jews are making it clear they don't intend to take the
economic assault on Israel quietly. A group of young Jewish activists in
the country have started a counter-boycott movement to make local firms
feel the pinch for their discrimination against the Jewish state.The Dutch pension asset manager PGGM, one of the largest in the country, announced in early January that it was divesting from five Israeli banks
because they finance "Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian
territories." The firm manages about 153 billion euros ($208 billion
dollars) in funds. In response, a group of young Dutch Jewish professionals called
Tradition is Our Future (TOF) have have launched a boycott of their
own. The group, whose goal is to defend Jewish life in the Netherlands,
decided to take action after the PGGM divestment while noting a recent
wave of anti-Israel fomentation.Some examples of this wave include Vitens, the largest drinking water company in Holland, which declared last December it was cutting ties with the Israeli water company Mekorot
due to its presence in Judea and Samaria. In early January, the premier
Dutch soccer team Vitesse left for training in the United Arab Emirates
(UAE), leaving behind its best defender Dan Mori after UAE authorities refused to allow him into the country for being an Israeli."We are afraid that this is just the beginning, and therefore we need
to take counter measurements. We call upon you to help us to boycott
those who boycott Israel," declared TOF.The counter-boycott being proposed targets PGGM's CEO Else Bos, who
holds an advisory position on the board of Emory University located in
Atlanta. Her profile can be seen among board members of the university's Center for Alternative Investments."We kindly ask for your co-operation and efforts to demand the
resignation of Bos from her position in the board," requests the group,
noting that doing so will send a message to PGGM and other Dutch firms
considering to boycott Israel "that their policy is internationally
unacceptable."The Dutch Jewish group highlights the hypocrisy of PGGM in limiting
"their moral crusade to only include Israel." They report the firm has
invested in the Bank of China "while China occupies Tibet" and despite
the bank's funding of terrorism, as well as Turkey which "has been occupying Northern Cyprus since 1974."TOF summarizes, saying "it seems that PGGM believes that Israel and
the Jews should be treated differently from other countries and other
people."The response of Dutch Jews fighting back brings to mind recent reports from France, where young Jews have begun taking matters into their own hands to defend their communities from a rising wave of anti-Semitism. In particular the French Jewish Defense League has been actively opposing public demonstrations of Jew hatred.
