Mosta animal killer caught on camera

 - Tuesday, 04 February 2014, 09:05 , by Neil Camilleri-MALTA INDEPENDENT
The person who yesterday hung two crucified animals – a dog and a cat – to the Mosta parish church was caught on several CCTV cameras but it is not known if the Police will be able to identify the man from the grainy footage.

The Malta Independent is informed that police investigators elevated CCTV footage from five buildings, all of which captured the perpetrator. A person who is in charge of one of these buildings yesterday spoke to this paper on the condition of anonymity. “The cameras captured this man stopping at the corner and looking around as if to see if the coast was clear. Then he disappeared and came back a few seconds later, holding the crucified dog. He climbed up onto a parapet and hung the crucifix beneath a street light.”This paper is informed that other cameras from around the area captured the man, who also hung a crucified cat onto a statue of St Philip near the Rotunda’s main door, but is not known if the other footage is clear enough for the man to be identified. The police took copies of the five recordings.Yesterday’s was the eleventh case of animal cruelty. The first gruesome discovery was made on 16 November, 2011, when a puppy was found crucified to a wooden cross that was hung upside down. Since then almost all cases have happened on or around the 16th day of the month, the only exclusions being one that happened on 23 February, 2012 and yesterday’s case.It is not known whether a single “serial killer” is behind these gruesome acts or whether some of the cases were the work of copycats. Animal rights groups and the public alike are enraged by these cowardly acts, and many criticize the police for “not doing enough” to catch the culprit. Some have even called for more CCTV cameras in and around Mosta’s public areas.

Another cat has been found dead and crucified to a piece of wood in Mosta.
The macabre discovery was made this morning on the railings near the main door of a primary school. The police kept school children well away from the scene. This was the latest in a series of such gruesome acts, most of which took place on or around the 16th day of the month. Six dead cats and dogs have been found crucified in Mosta since October 16, 2011 when a cat was found crucified on the door of the former residence of Franġisku Buhagiar, who had been accused in court of murdering his sister. The last case was on December 16 when a cat was found dead near the statue of St Joseph in Main Street. On February 10 last year a cat was found crucified and hanging upside down from a cross in Baskal Buhagiar Street. Another cat was discovered crucified in Mosta on January 17 last year. It had been found hanging to the gate of a chapel in Triq San Anton Abbati. On  November 16 2011, a Chihuahua cross-breed was found crucified on the gates of the oratory of the Sacred Heart. A month earlier, on October 16, a priest walking along Main Street found a dead puppy nailed to an upside down wooden cross. In both cases there was a note in which the perpetrator said the suffering he or she had gone through was worse than that of the dog.The first incident had led investigators to follow a potential link with a 1999 murder since the house where that puppy was found was where Franġisku Buhagiar, now aged 81, had shot dead his sister following a bizarre argument over burnt toast.Mr Buhagiar, who served a 10-year jail term, denied any connection to the incident.
