Head of Syrian Catholics says U.S. strike would be 'criminal'

NEW YORK – Pope Francis and the head of the Catholic Church in Syria have decided to take on President Obama, with both issuing direct appeals for the United States not to launch a military strike on Syria.Pope Francis has sent a Twitter message to his nearly 3 million followers declaring: “With utmost firmness I condemn the use of chemical weapons. But he also wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the host of the G-20 Summit attended by Obama, appealing to the leaders to “lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution.”

Pope Francis wrote Wednesday:

The leaders of the G20 cannot remain indifferent to the dramatic situation of the beloved Syrian people which has lasted far too long, and even risks bringing greater suffering to a region bitterly tested by strife and needful of peace. To the leaders present, to each and every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution.Rather, let there be a renewed commitment to seek, with courage and determination, a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation of the parties, unanimously supported by the international community. Moreover, all governments have the moral duty to do everything possible to ensure humanitarian assistance to those suffering because of the conflict, both within and beyond the country’s borders.

On Sunday, Pope Francis abandoned the traditional religious theme in his Angelus prayer appearance from the window in the papal residence above St. Peter’s Square, calling instead for a worldwide day of fasting and prayer for peace on Sept. 7.To thousands of the faithful assembled below, he said: “My heart is deeply wounded by what is happening in Syria and anguished by the dramatic developments” on the horizon, an apparent reference to the reports that the U.S. and France were considering a military strike to punish the Syrian regime for a chemical weapons attack.He urged all sides in the Syrian civil war to lay down arms and “listen to the voice of their conscience and with courage take up the way of negotiations.”Francis was joined by Gregory III, the head of the Greek Catholic Church, who said the U.S. launching a military strike on Syria would constitute “a criminal act” that would “reap more victims” as Islamic jihadists continue to flow into Syria.Gregory III, the patriarch of Antioch, who oversees the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Syria and Lebanon, said:

We must listen to the pope’s appeal for peace in Syria. If Western countries want to create true democracy then they must build it on reconciliation, through dialogue between Christians and Muslims, not with weapons. This attack being planned by the United States is a criminal act, which will only reap more victims, in addition to the tens of thousands of these two years of war. This will destroy the Arab world’s trust in the West.What or who have led Syria to this thin red line, this point of no return? Who created this hell in which our people have been living for months? Every day, Islamic extremists from all over the world are pouring into Syria with the sole intent to kill and not one country has done anything to stop them; even the U.S. has decided to send in more weapons. We renew our rejection of any foreign military intervention in the Syrian crisis.

On Friday, Pope Francis tweeted: “All men and women of good will are bound by the task of pursuing peace. #prayforpeace.”Following Francis’ lead, Cardinal Dolan of New York and leaders of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, or USCCB, wrote to every member of Congress on Thursday, urging them to vote against military intervention in Syria, Time magazine reported.On Wednesday, the USCCB wrote a letter to President Obama condemning the use of chemical weapons in Syria while insisting Obama should not resort to military intervention, urging him instead to work for a political solution.
“Our focus is on the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Syria and on saying lives by ending the conflict, not fueling it,” the Catholic bishops told Obama.“We have heard the urgent calls of the Successor of Saint Peter, Pope Francis, and our suffering brother bishops of the venerable and ancient Christian communities of the Middle East. As one, they beg the international community not to resort to military intervention in Syria. They have made it clear that a military attack will be counterproductive, will exacerbate an already deadly situation, and will have unintended negative consequences. Their concerns find a strong resonance in American public opinion that questions the wisdom of intervention and in the lack of international consensus.”
The Catholic bishops stressed their longstanding position that the Syrian people need a political solution.
“We ask the United States to work urgently and tirelessly with other governments to obtain a cease-fire, initiate serious negotiations, provide impartial humanitarian assistance, and encourage efforts to build an inclusive society in Syria that protects the rights of all its citizens, including Christians and other minorities,” the bishops wrote.

EU foreign ministers will insist to Kerry that America hold off at least until UN inspectors’ report published

VILNIUS, Lithuania — European foreign ministers meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry are expected to urge the United States to hold off any military action in Syria until UN inspectors report on the alleged use of chemical weapons.Kerry is in Europe courting international support for a possible strike on the Syrian regime for its reported use of chemical weapons on August 21. European officials have been skeptical about whether any military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime can be effective.On Saturday, Kerry and about 15 European foreign ministers attended an informal meeting of the European Union in Vilnius, Lithuania.Britain’s Parliament has already voted against military action. And French President Francois Hollande displayed sudden caution on Friday, saying he would wait for a UN report before deciding whether to intervene militarily.France, which firmly backs the Syrian rebels and has strategic and historic interest in the region, had been ready to act last week but held off when President Barack Obama declared last weekend that he would seek the backing of Congress first.Hollande’s announcement appeared to catch French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius off guard. Earlier on Friday, he told EU foreign ministers meeting in Vilnius that there was no need to wait for the UN report because it would simply confirm what was already known — that the chemical weapons attack had occurred — but would not say who was responsible.The UN report is expected later this month, although some European officials are asking the UN to speed up the probe or issue an interim report.Also on Friday, EU defense ministers said that all evidence points to the Assad regime using chemical weapons in the August 21 attack.The ministers met Friday in Lithuania which holds the rotating presidency. Lithuanian Defense Minister Juozas Olekas said that although the ministers condemned the use of chemical weapons, there were “a variety of opinions” on what should be done.While in Europe, Kerry also is discussing ongoing talks between Israel and the Palestinians.He is scheduled to meet on Sunday in Paris with representatives of Arab nations and then later in the day hold talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in London, his last stop before returning to Washington.

Obama has been working for several weeks to gain international and domestic support for a US-led strike in Syria in response to the August 21 attack. He’s already secured the support of a Senate panel that authorized the order to strike, provided that any operation last no more than 90 days and that no American troops set foot in Syria. He’s now lobbying for congressional approval, as Congress reconvenes next week.

On Friday, US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power argued that a limited strike was the only option left to respond to the use of chemical weapons.“Some have asked, given our collective war-weariness, why we cannot use non-military tools to achieve the same end? My answer to this question is: we have exhausted the alternatives,” Power said at the Center for American Progress.Late Thursday, Power blamed Russia for the lack of progress at the UN and for holding the Security Council “hostage.”

“Russia continues to hold the Council hostage and shirks its international responsibilities,” she said.

Lebanese terror group mobilizes ‘tens of thousands’ of fighters while Tehran, Damascus prepare for ‘various scenarios’ in case of US strike

Iran, Syria and Hezbollah have set up a joint situation room in preparation for a potential US-led strike in Syria, with Hezbollah mobilizing “tens of thousands” of fighters for the occasion.The military operations coordination between the three is meant to plan for the monitoring of targets and organizing of retaliation, the Lebanese Daily Star reported Friday, citing senior Lebanese political and diplomatic sources.“Iran, Syria and Hezbollah don’t have a clear picture about what Americans have planned,” said one diplomat,“but [they] too are prepared for various scenarios.”Political sources said Hezbollah put “tens of thousands” of fighters and reservists on alert in anticipation of a US strike.“Everyone in Hezbollah who has been trained to use weapons has been put on high alert,” one political source told the Lebanese daily. “The party is ready for all eventualities.”Iran and Hezbollah have repeatedly indicated that they would back Syria’s Bashar Assad regime in the event of a strike in response to the reported use of chemical weapons in a Damascus suburb on August 21, which the US says killed 1,429 people.Hezbollah has already been heavily involved in the Syrian battlefield for several months now on the Assad side, which has cost the Lebanese group some political capital at home, not to mention the spillover from Syria it has brought with it. Lebanon has been the scene of several incidents that are perceived as retaliatory attacks for Hezbollah’s involvement Syria. Just last month, a car bombing killed 22 people in a Hezbollah stronghold in south Beirut. In early July, a similar attack took place but did not cause any deaths.Lebanese officials cited in the Daily Star report warned that Iran and Hezbollah see the targeting of Syrian army posts, airfields and weapons depots as a strategic threat to their interests and of course to Assad, which would give them a reason to intervene. But the officials indicated that they were likely to do so only if the US strike seriously threatened the regime’s rule.On Friday, a report in the Wall Street Journal indicated that the US had intercepted orders from the head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, Kassem Sulemenai, in Iran to to Iranian-supported Shi’ite militia groups in Iraq to attack American sites should a strike on Syria take place.The targeted sites could include the US embassy in Baghdad and other American interest sites in the Iraqi capital, as well as the US embassy in Beirut and other sites in Lebanon via Hezbollah, officials said.On Friday, the US State Department ordered non-essential diplomatic staff out of Lebanon and strongly urged private US citizens to leave as well, citing security concerns.Iran has also threatened to hit Israel should the US carry out a strike, with the commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ General Mohammad Ali Jafari saying late last month that a possible war in Syria “will result in the imminent destruction of the Zionist regime of Israel.”But Syria too has a bank of targets, according to the Lebanese report, having already threatened to strike Israel, Turkey and Jordan in retaliation for any attack.Meanwhile, the US is also preparing for an expansion of targets should the decision to carry out an attack come through. On Friday, it was reported that US President Barack Obama instructed the Pentagon to add Syrian sites to its target list, with the order coming in response to intelligence indications that the Syrian government has moved troops and equipment used to employ chemical weapons.The US is considering employing Air Force bombers in addition to ship-launched cruise missiles.Obama is now seeking congressional approval for a US-led strike, having gained authorization from a Senate panel Wednesday to order an attack, the limits of which include a time frame of 90 days and the exclusion of American boots on the ground.The Syrian regime has denied using chemical weapons, calling US claims “blatant lies,” and blaming any WMD attacks on rebels and “al-Qaeda.”

In south Egypt, Islamists take over a town

DALGA, Egypt (AP) — The Coptic Orthodox priest would only talk to his visitor after hiding from the watchful eyes of the bearded Muslim outside, who sported a pistol bulging from under his robe.So Father Yoannis moved behind a wall in the charred skeleton of an ancient monastery to describe how it was torched by Islamists and then looted when they took over this southern Egyptian town following the ouster of the country’s president.“The fire in the monastery burned intermittently for three days. The looting continued for a week. At the end, not a wire or an electric switch is left,” Yoannis told The Associated Press. The monastery’s 1,600-year-old underground chapel was stripped of ancient icons and the ground was dug up on the belief that a treasure was buried there.“Even the remains of ancient and revered saints were disturbed and thrown around,” he said.A town of some 120,000 — including 20,000 Christians — Dalga has been outside government control since hard-line supporters of the Islamist Mohammed Morsi drove out police and occupied their station on July 3, the day Egypt’s military chief removed the president in a popularly supported coup. It was part of a wave of attacks in the southern Minya province that targeted Christians, their homes and businesses.Since then, the radicals have imposed their grip on Dalga, twice driving off attempts by the army to send in armored personnel carriers by showering them with gunfire.Their hold points to the power of hard-line Islamists in southern Egypt even after Morsi’s removal — and their determination to defy the military-backed leadership that has replaced him.With the army and police already fighting a burgeoning militant insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, there are growing signs that a second insurgency could erupt in the south — particularly in Minya and Assiut provinces, both Islamist strongholds and both home to Egypt’s two largest Christian communities.The takeover of Dalga has been disastrous for the Christian community in the town, located 270 kilometers (160 miles) south of Cairo in Minya, on the edge of the Nile Valley near the cliffs that mark the start of the desert.In the initial burst of violence, the town’s only Catholic church was ransacked and set ablaze, like the Monastery of the Virgin Mary and St. Abraam. The Anglican church was looted.Some 40 Christian families have fled Dalga since, Yoannis said. Nearly 40 Christian-owned homes and stores have been attacked by Islamists, according to local Minya activists. Bandits from the nearby deserts joined the looting and burning, they said. To ensure the spread of fear, the attackers torched houses in all Christian neighborhoods, not just in one or two.Among the homes torched was that of Father Angelos, an 80-year-old Orthodox priest who lives close to the monastery. Yoannis’ home was spared a similar fate by his Muslim neighbors. A 60-year-old Christian who fired from his roof to ward off a mob was dragged down and killed, the activists said.“Even if we had firearms, we would be reluctant to use them,” said Yoannis. “We cannot take a life. Firing in the air may be our limit.”Those who remain pay armed Muslim neighbors to protect them. Yoannis said his brother paid with a cow and a water buffalo. Most Christian businesses have been closed for weeks.Armed men can be seen in the streets, and nearly every day Islamists hold rallies at a stage outside the police station, demanding Morsi’s reinstatement.

Most Christians remain indoors as much as possible, particularly during the rallies. They say they are routinely insulted on the streets by Muslims, including children. Christian women stay home at all times, fearing harassment by the Islamists, according to multiple Christians who spoke to the AP. Most requested that their names not be published for fear of reprisals.“The Copts in Dalga live in utter humiliation,” said local rights activist Ezzat Ibrahim. “They live in horror and cannot lead normal lives.”None of the town’s churches held Mass for a month, until Wednesday, when one was held in one of the monastery’s two churches. About 25 attended, down from the usual 500 or more.“They don’t want to see any Christian with any power, no matter how modest,” Yoannis said of the hard-liners now running Dalga. “They only want to see us poor without money, a trade or a business to be proud of.”Like other Christians in town, he said police and authorities were helpless to intervene.“Everyone keeps telling me that I should alert the police and the army,” he said. “As if I hadn’t done that already.”At intervals, the 33-year-old father of three would stop talking, move carefully to the edge of a wall, stick his head out to check if someone was coming.His big worry was the bearded Muslim at the gate, Saber Sarhan Askar.Skinny with hawk-like hazelnut eyes, Askar is said by Dalga’s Christians to have taken part in the torching and looting of the monastery. Outside the monastery that day, Askar was telling priests he was there to protect it. But the orders he yelled to other priests left no doubt who was in charge.“Bring us tea!” he barked at one priest. “I need something cold to drink!” he screamed at another soon after.School teacher and part-time entrepreneur Kromer Ishaq fled Dalga a day after the Islamists took over. Then on the night of the takeover, Ishaq’s gold shop was broken into and looted.The son of a wealthy family, Ishaq fled with his extended family all the way to the Nile Delta north of Cairo, where he is now looking for work.“I used to employ people and now I’m looking for work. I once lived in a house I own and now I live in a rented apartment. You ask me what life is like? It’s like black tar,” Ishaq said by telephone.Dalga is the most extreme example of Islamist power in Minya — no other towns are known to be under such extreme lockdown. But the province in general has seen a surge in Islamist violence since the coup against Morsi.In the province, 35 churches have been attacked, including 19 completely gutted by fire. At least six Christian schools and five orphanages have been destroyed, along with five courthouses, seven police stations and six city council buildings. A museum in the city of Malawi was looted and ransacked.On Aug. 11, policemen suspected of loyalty to Morsi stormed the provincial police headquarters in Minya city. They dragged out the province’s security chief and his top aide from their offices and ordered them both to leave the province. They did.Minya was the epicenter of an Islamic militant insurgency against the rule of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in the 1980s and 1990s. It remains a stronghold of Islamists, including the extremist Gamaa Islamiya group. It also has the largest Christian community of any of Egypt’s 29 provinces — at 35 percent of Minya’s 4 million people, compared to around 10 percent nationwide.Over Egypt’s past 2 ½ years of turmoil, Islamist strength has grown. Hundreds of jailed radicals who purportedly forswore violence — though not their hard-line ideology — were freed after Mubarak’s 2011 fall and given the freedom to recruit. The south has seen a flood of heavy weapons smuggled across the desert from neighboring Libya.A top Interior Ministry official in Cairo said the Minya police force suffered large-scale infiltration by pro-Morsi Islamists. The local force is now under investigation by the ministry. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe was still undergoing.The Minya security chief who fled the province, as well as two top aides, were replaced on Wednesday for what the Interior Ministry called the failure to maintain law and order.In the security vacuum, it has been Christians largely paying the price.Christian businessman Talaat Bassili recounted how on Aug. 15, dozens of men, some armed, stormed his home in the city of Malawi, not far from Dalga. For three hours, with no police or army in sight, the attackers made off with TV sets, washing machines, mobile phones, jewelry and cash.The attackers descended on the house from the scaffoldings of a mosque next door. In footage from Bassili’s security camera, shown to AP, men in robes and boys in sandals try to force their way into the house, then finally blast away the lock with Kalashnikov assault rifles. Some loaded their loot into a donkey cart.Later, the footage shows Bassili, his wife Nahed Samaan — in a nightgown and a house robe — and son Fady leaving to take refuge with a neighbor.A week later, Bassili said a man called him on his mobile phone to ask whether he wanted to buy some of his stuff back.“I said no.”
