Iran believes that Israel is close to stiking its nuclear facilities, according to a report in Lebanese newspaper Al Jumhuriya, cited by Maariv/NRG.
According to the report, a senior Iranian official recently visited
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in his hideout in the Dahiya section
section of Beirut to discuss this assessment.A senior military source confirmed to the Lebanese newspaper that the
meeting had, indeed, taken place, but said that it had not been held
inside the Dahiya – a neighborhood controlled by Hezbollah – but outside
it.The senior source said that the Iranian official is a military officer
and that the meeting was devoted to the military and logistical
readiness of Hezbollah for a confrontation with Israel, which, he added,
is just “a stone's throw away” from Lebanon.The source added that less than 48 hours after the meeting, 10,000
Hezbollah guerrillas and unspecified “special forces” began extensive
military exercises in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa valley. He said
that 10,000 men took part in the exercises, which were the largest of
their kind ever conducted in that area. He posited that strengthening
Hezbollah in the region is also intended to enable the continued flow of
weapons from Damascus to the organization, and especially advanced
weaponry.The report could be an effort at disinformation and is probably meant
to intimidate Israel and hint that Hezbollah – an Iranian proxy force –
would fire its missiles at the Jewish state if it attacks Iran.
Hezbollah has reportedly promised Lebanon's president, Michel Ayoun, that it would refrain from attacking Israel from Lebanese territory if Israel attacks Syria. It subsequently warned, however, that it would attack Israel from Syrian territory, if Israel strikes Syria.Iran is widely believed to have an extensive program
for developing nuclear weapons which is deemed to be close to the point

"a candid exchange" with President Barack Obama on Syria, and warned
that "the consequences would be catastrophic" if Congress voted against a
military strike against President Bashar al-Assad for his use of
chemical weapons."The consequences
would be catastrophic because it would undermine the credibility of the
United States of America and the credibility of the President of the
United States. None of us want that.""We had a candid exchange," the Arizona senator said, noting that he was
encouraged by the Obama meeting. "We found some areas where we can work
together, but we have a long way to go.”
Graham, who represents South Carolina, also expressed optimism about the
session but added: "The president has to fix this. We urged the
president to up his game. If we don’t get Syria right, we don't want
endless war. We want sustainable stability.
"A degrading strike limited in scope could have a beneficial effect to the battlefield momentum," Graham added. "There will never be a political settlement in Syria as long as Assad is winning." Economy Minister Naftali Bennett (Bayit Yehudi) reassured the public
on Monday that in his opinion, the citizens of Israel will not come
under any attack from Syria, and explained why he is firmly against the
establishment of a "Palestinian State" in Judea and Samaria.Speaking on the Knesset Channel, he said that Israelis could
go on living their lives' normally and even noted, when asked, that his
family has not renewed its supply of gas masks yet.Asked if he was disappointed by US President Barack Obama's decision
to hold off on attacking Syria until Congress debates the idea, he said
that he does not want to give advice to the US President. He added,
however, that "Israeli citizens have to be realistic and know that at
the end of the day, 'If I am not for myself – who will be for me?' [a
Talmudic adage in favor of self-reliance – ed.]. If we do not take care
of our own security, no one else will. Look at how the entire world is
reacting to the murder of 1,000 children with gas."“All things told,” he said, “the world is stuttering. And on the day
of truth we can only depend on ourselves. Not international guarantees,
no relying on agreements – in the end, our strength, which comes from
our hold upon the Land and our belief in the Land, [and] the IDF where I
still serve in the reserves and am proud of it – that is what will keep

United States in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, responding to
reports that Russian radar had detected a missile launch in the
direction of the eastern Mediterranean.The Israeli Defence Ministry confirmed to Reuters that the test was
conducted at approximately 9:15 a.m. Israel Daylight Time (2:15 a.m.
Eastern Daylight Time) Tuesday, about the same time that Russia's
Interfax news agency reported that the launch was detected by a radar
station at Armavir, near the Black Sea. Russia's state-owned news agency RIA originally reported Tuesday that
radar detected two ballistic 'objects' that were fired from the central
Mediterranean Sea. Originally, a spokeswoman for the Israeli military
told Reuters that Israel was "not aware of such an event having
occurred." However, approximately an hour later, Israel acknowledged
testing a so-called "anchor" target missile used in a U.S.-funded
anti-missile system. Initial speculation that Syria was the target of the missiles proved
premature after the Russian embassy in Damascus reported no explosions
or sign of a missile attack in the Syrian capital, according to the
Itar-Tass news agency. An RIA source in Damascus reported that the
objects fell into the sea.When contacted by the Associated Press, the Defense Ministry would
not confirm the original report, but said it would issue a statement
soon. In Washington, a Pentagon press officer could not confirm the
report, but a U.S. official denied to CBS News 
that

Egypt: The debate over Sharia law is far from over

Giorgio Bernardelli Now that the street clashes and violence are over – for the time being at least – Sharia law tops the list of issues to be debated in post-Morsi Egypt. Yesterday, Egypt’s interim president, Judge Adli Mansour, – who was appointed by the military in July – announced the names of the 50 members that are to form part of the committee tasked with amending the Islamist-dominated Constitution. The committee will have 60 days to discuss the amendments. The Muslim Brotherhood managed to get the Constitution approved last November but the content is strongly criticised by the liberal opposition and representatives of Christians Churches who stopped the work they were doing for the committee in protest against the radical ideology of the Islamists. The generals held a referendum on the text after its revision.The committee – which is made up of representatives of political parties, religious communities and confessions - announced that three of its members are Christians: Bishop Paul, of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Tanta, the Coptic Catholic Bishop of Giza, Antonious Aziz Mina and the President of the Protestant Churches of Egypt, Safwat El-Bayyady. The committee also has three representatives from al-Azhar University (including Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawky Allam) and two Islamist figures: Kamal El-Helbawy, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who has disagreed with the movement for a while and Bassam El-Zarqa, Vice-President of the Salafist Nour party.Bassam El-Zarqa is sending out early signs of potential further clashes over Sharia law. Indeed, Nour has threatened to boycott the committee’s work, claiming the group is dominated “by leftist forces”. The party has already announced it intends to uphold article 219, the point most hotly contested by Christians because the text drafted by the Muslim Brotherhood has given more weight to Sharia law in the country.Article 2 of the previous Constitution - which dates back to the Sadat era – referred to Sharia law as the main source of legislation in Egypt. But this was considered too vague by Islamists, so article 219 was inserted into the text approved in 2012. This article stressed the link between State law and Islamic law. “The principles of Sharia law include commonly accepted interpretations of it, the foundations, jurisprudential rules and sources passed down by the Sunnah and al-Gama'a schools,” the current text reads. The law as described here is far more binding and explicitly targets Shiites as well, who do not follow the Islamic doctrines mentioned.One of the amendments proposed by the committee of ten experts which drafted the text which the 50-meber committee will now debate on, is the abrogation of article 219 and a return to a more generic form of Islamic law. This is why Salafists have protested. But the military and the transitional government believe it is essential to keep Nour in the Constitutional revision process (partly to prevent friction with Saudi Arabia which has openly sided against ousted President Mohammed Morsi). So the debate surrounding Sharia law appears far from over and it looks like it will be the real litmus test for judging Egypt’s new path.EGYPT

But partly because of the affection shown and the invitations sent to him Francis, Ratzinger has not disappeared from the public scene completely. Yesterday, for the first time since he resigned, the Pope Emeritus dressed in white and celebrated mass for his former students who meet once a year for a day or so at the end of the summer. The Pope Emeritus gave a homily, speaking off-the-cuff in German and the most important passages from this were translated and published by Vatican Radio.Benedict XVI’s homily focused on parts of the Gospel where Jesus speaks about humility and choosing the lowest places, in tune with Bergoglio’s message. The fact that the homily went public confirms that Ratzinger has not withdrawn completely from public life and neither is he living a cloistered life, despite the fact the elderly Pope Emeritus lives in a former convent. Benedict XVI lives a withdrawn but not a monastic life, assisted by four Memores Domini belonging to the Communion and Liberation movement and by his most loyal assistant Fr. Georg Gänswein. Gänswein is both personal secretary to the former Pope and Prefect of the Francis’ Papal Household. He doesn’t write books or speeches but does receive visits from friends, acquaintances and ecclesiastical and lay figures. Some of these visitors have given public interviews about their meetings with the former Pope, or have commented on them anonymously, denying certain statements falsely attributed to Ratzinger, such as the recent comment he allegedly made about the reason for his resignation being that God wanted him to.The Pope Emeritus has not disappeared from the public spot light altogether, partly because his successor allowed photos of the two of them together to be published. From their first meeting in Castel Gandolfo, to their first embrace, their moments of prayer together, their conversation about the Vatileaks documents and Ratzinger’s return to the Vatican. Then last 5 July, the day the encyclical co-written by the Pope and the Pope Emeritus was published, Francis wanted his predecessor by his side at the inauguration of the statue of St. Michael the Archangel. Francis sees the Pope Emeritus as an asset. “It’s like having your grandfather in the house, a wise grandfather. Pope Benedict is a man of great prudence. He doesn’t interfere! I have often told him so: “Holiness, receive guests, lead your own life, come along with us,” Bergoglio said on his return from the World Youth Day celebrations in Rio de Janeiro. The attention Francis shows to Ratzinger has also been demonstrated by his decision to keep Georg Gänswein as Prefect of the Papal Household. Gänswein is a bridge between the reigning Pope and his predecessor who is becoming less and less hidden.

McCain: Congress' Rejecting Use of Force in Syria Would be Catastrophic

"A degrading strike limited in scope could have a beneficial effect to the battlefield momentum," Graham added. "There will never be a political settlement in Syria as long as Assad is winning." McCain and Graham met privately with Obama as part of the White House's extensive effort to lobby Congress for a military strike against Assad. The senators, who have long pressed for a stronger U.S. response in the country, said over the weekend that they might vote against a resolution authorizing military action in Syria because they considered Obama's plan as too limited. And as many more lawmakers said they were wary of a strike on Syria, no matter how limited, the White House stepped up its lobbying effort. Earlier Monday, the administration held a 70-minute telephone briefing with the House Democratic Caucus that included Secretary of State John Kerry; Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel; Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Susan E. Rice, national security adviser; and James R. Clapper Jr., director of national intelligence. The call included 127 House Democrats, nearly two-thirds of their total number. Outside the White House, McCain said the administration's plan now could be more difficult because Assad "is moving his forces around." Both senators questioned the wisdom of President Obama publicly signaling in advance its intention to strike. Obama had said earlier this year that any documented use of chemical weapons by Assad against his own population would amount to a "red line" that the international community would not let him cross. The president now has called for a military response to Assad's purported use of chemical weapons in the civil war that has lasted more than two years — and the administration said on Sunday that it had evidence he recently used sarin gas in a Damascus suburb. McCain said on Monday that he believed lawmakers awaiting a critical vote on Syria "must be assured that this is different from the past two years of neglect" on the part of the administration. He also said he differed with the administration's view that there was sufficient time to seek an authorization from Congress. "I am not satisfied that the timeline is of no consequence — and I am astounded when the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says it doesn't matter," McCain said, referring to Army Gen. Martin Dempsey. Both senators said that Obama now has to work harder in persuading the Congress and the American people that a strike is necessary against Assad.
"They have to work very hard," McCain said. "Americans are very skeptical. They have a selling job to do."
"There is a credibility gap with many of us," he added. "Many of my colleagues on Congress are going to have to be convinced either way." "It is not surprising to me that many of us in Congress are reluctant to engage in Syria because you don't know what's going to happen," Graham said. "'OK, we've struck Syria. Now what?'" "What can I sell to people in South Carolina?" the senator asked. "I can't sell another Iraq or Afghanistan, because I don't want to. What I can sell to the people of South Carolina is that if we don't get Syria right, Iran's surely going to take the signals that we don't care about their nuclear program." The senators also emphasized that any prolonged U.S. effort in Syria would not include American troops. "There should be no American boots on the ground," McCain said. "They are tired of it and weary of it." He Arizona senator added that a U.S. strike would be most effective if it targeted Assad's air operations. "We have to bring Bashar al-Assad down," he said.
