Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is claiming that if
a peace agreement is reached with Israel, it would bring an end to his
people’s demands of the Jewish state.
Abbas made the comments during a meeting in Ramallah with members of the leftist Meretz party, and they were reported by Channel 2 News."I know your concerns, but guarantee that at the conclusion of successful negotiations, we undertake to end all the demands. We will not ask to return to Yafo, Akko and Tzfat,” he said.Members of Meretz said that Abbas told them a “fair agreement” will end the conflict with Israel and that a “peace agreement with Israel will be final and binding." He did not, however, specify what is meant by a fair peace agreement and did not commit to the fact that PA would give up its demand for the “right of return”.He added that he believes all obstacles to peace could be overcome and resolved within six months, though he said that at this point there was little progress in the talks. Abbas made it clear, however, that he would not agree to temporary borders and would only sign an agreement that would allow the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.The PA chairman criticized Israel’s behavior around the resumption of negotiations, saying, according to Channel 2, "I wanted there to be daily meetings or at most every two days, because our time is limited, but Israel refused." The al-Taqwa mosque in Tripoli was bombed this Friday after prayers concluded, according to BBC reports. Only five minutes later, a second explosion hit the city's al-Salam mosque.
The Red Cross has revealed that 20 have been killed in the two explosions, and 35 severely wounded.
Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city of nearly 200,000 people, is one of the country's most volatile sectarian faultiness, with a small Alawite community living among Sunni majority.War in neighboring Syria has raised tensions in Tripoli between the city's Sunni Muslim and Alawite communities.Sheikh Salem Rafii is one of the most prominent Sunni leaders in Lebanon and opposes Lebanon's militant Shia Hezbollah group. Gang rape of young photojournalist shocks Mumbai
NEW DELHI (AP) — A young photojournalist was gang raped while her male colleague was tied up and beaten in an isolated, overgrown corner of India's business hub of Mumbai, police said Friday. Abbas: A Peace Agreement Would End the Conflict

Abbas made the comments during a meeting in Ramallah with members of the leftist Meretz party, and they were reported by Channel 2 News."I know your concerns, but guarantee that at the conclusion of successful negotiations, we undertake to end all the demands. We will not ask to return to Yafo, Akko and Tzfat,” he said.Members of Meretz said that Abbas told them a “fair agreement” will end the conflict with Israel and that a “peace agreement with Israel will be final and binding." He did not, however, specify what is meant by a fair peace agreement and did not commit to the fact that PA would give up its demand for the “right of return”.He added that he believes all obstacles to peace could be overcome and resolved within six months, though he said that at this point there was little progress in the talks. Abbas made it clear, however, that he would not agree to temporary borders and would only sign an agreement that would allow the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.The PA chairman criticized Israel’s behavior around the resumption of negotiations, saying, according to Channel 2, "I wanted there to be daily meetings or at most every two days, because our time is limited, but Israel refused." Lebanon: 20 People Killed, Dozens Wounded in Double Explosion
20 people have been killed in two separate explosions in the northern city of Tripoli, Lebanon.

The IDF has denied earlier reports from Arabic media that it responded to the rockets with artillery fire.
Lebanese media has been reporting that at least 2 of the rockets were fired from the Ras al-Ain neighborhood of the city of Tyre.The IDF spokesperson's unit has said it believes the rockets were fired by "global jihad" terrorists - another term for Al Qaeda-linked or inspired Sunni terroristsת as opposed to the Shia Hezbollah terrorist group.One rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, between Akko and Nahariya, the IDF said. Three others struck in "open areas."Earlier this month, four IDF soldiers suffered light to moderate injuries on the Israel-Lebanon border, when a bomb was set off as they passed.That attack was later claimed by Hezbollah.This would not be the first time Sunni Islamist groups affiliated with the "global jihad" or Al Qaeda ideology have fired rockets from Lebanon into Israel.Arieh Herzog, a former director of the Israeli defense ministry's Missile Defense Administration, warned "this kind of attack could provide (provoke) very serious action from our side."He stressed, however, that missile defence capabilities were "much better" than they had been during Israel's 2006 war in Lebanon against Iranian proxy Hezbollah."We don't have enough (Iron Dome) batteries... to cover each and every city in Israel," he told reporters."But there's been a big change since the second Lebanon war. The number of registered child refugees fleeing Syria's violence has topped the 1 million mark in another grim milestone of the deepening conflict, two UN agencies said Friday.Roughly half of all the nearly 2 million registered refugees from Syria are children, and some 740,000 of those are under the age of 11, according to the UN refugee and children's agencies."This one millionth child refugee is not just another number," said Anthony Lake, the head of UNICEF, the UN children's agency. "This is a real child ripped from home, maybe even from a family, facing horrors we can only begin to comprehend."The children's ordeals are not over once they escape Syria, said Antonio Guterres, the head of the Office for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, known as UNHCR."Even after they have crossed a border to safety, they are traumatized, depressed and in need of a reason for hope," he said.His agency said it tries to ensure that babies born in exile are provided with birth certificates, preventing them from becoming stateless, and that all refugee families and children live in some form of safe shelter.
More than 3,500 children separated from families
But the threats to refugee children are rising, the agencies say, including child labour, early marriage and the potential for sexual exploitation and trafficking. More than 3,500 children in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq have crossed Syria's borders unaccompanied or separated from their families, according to the UN figures.The agencies say some 7,000 children are among the more than 100,000 killed in the unrest in Syria, which began in March 2011 and later exploded into a civil war.Most of the refugees fleeing Syria have arrived in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. However, UN officials say that increasingly Syrians are fleeing to North Africa and Europe.The two UN agencies estimate that more than 2 million children also have been displaced within Syria.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Friday the real number of Syrian refugees is "well over 2 million" if unregistered refugees are counted."The situation in Syria continues to worsen. The humanitarian suffering is alarming. Sectarian tensions have been ignited. Regional instability is spreading," Ban said in a speech in Seoul, South Korea."It is heartbreaking to see all these young people, children and women and refugees, who do not have any means, any hope for their country," he said. "They do not know when they will be able to return to their country."

The council's statement, read out by the acting chairman, Argentinian diplomat Maria Cristina Perceval, said only: "There is a strong concern among council members about the allegations and a general sense that there must be clarity on what happened, and that the situation has to be followed carefully."British foreign minister William Hague and France's Laurent Fabius had earlier called for direct UN access to the site of the alleged war crime after meeting Ahmed al-Jarba, the head of the Syrian National Coalition, a leading rebel group, in Paris.Fabius said al-Jarba claimed that 1,200 people were killed in the assault earlier on Wednesday in a Damascus suburb."I told him we have asked the security council to require the mission of Dr. Ake Sellstrom, which is currently present in Damascus, to be granted immediate access in order to establish the facts," the French minister said.An earlier EU statement, issued by foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, also noted: "Such accusations should be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the United Nations expert mission, which arrived recently in Syria."For their part, US diplomats circulated a text of a draft UN statement which, they said, was watered down by Syria's allies in the UN body, China and Russia.The draft text had called for the UN to "urgently take the steps necessary for today's attack to be investigated by the UN mission on the ground."The Sellstrom mission arrived in Syria on Sunday.But, following five months of negotiations on its mandate with the Syrian authorities, its actions will be limited to looking at three locations linked to 13 earlier allegations of chemical weapons use.Meanwhile, Israel and Turkey have given credence to the rebels' new claims.But Russia, as well as Syria's other main ally, Iran, have said the latest incident is a "provocation" staged by rebels in order to prompt Western military intervention.The allegations were supported by videos posted by rebel groups on YouTube.The videos show scores of dead bodies wrapped in shrouds in makeshift clinics, as well as men and children suffering from convulsions and disorientation.The alleged attack took place one year - almost to the day - after US President Barack Obama said that large scale use of chemical arms is a "red line" for US action.A White House statement on Wednesday made no mention of the red line, however."If the Syrian government has nothing to hide and is truly committed to an impartial and credible investigation of chemical weapons use in Syria, it will facilitate the UN team’s immediate and unfettered access to this site," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said instead."I’m not talking about red lines. I’m not having a debate or conversation about red lines or I’m not setting red lines. BRUSSELS - The EU's envoy to north
Africa, Bernardino Leon, has said events in Egypt are "more complex"
than a simple story of the army killing Muslim protesters.He told press in Brussels on Monday (19 August) the military has a "special responsibility."He also said media reports it has done the vast bulk of the killing -
at least 800 people in the past few days, including some burned alive
in tents or shot by snipers - are fair.But he added: "There are two sides. There is violence coming from all
sides … We have seen attacks on Coptic churches and on public
buildings. We've been saying very clearly that violence from both sides,
from all sides, has to stop."He noted that EU ambassadors on Monday decided to call a snap meeting of foreign ministers on Wednesday.He said nobody has spoken of EU "sanctions" against the military regime so far.
But he indicated that an options paper to be drafted by the EU's foreign service is likely to contain a potential arms embargo and a block on EU pro-democracy funds.Leon underlined the importance of Egypt in terms of regional stability."Egypt is a key partner [for the EU], probably the most important partner in the Mediterranean," he said."We are convinced that a political solution is possible … We still think there are democratic forces and we will try to address them and keep working with them constructively," he added.
His words echoed British foreign minister William Hague on BBC radio earlier in the day.Hague said the UK will suspend some security projects with the Egyptian military and stop some arms exports.He noted: "What is happening now in the Middle East is the most important event so far of the 21st century … I think it will take years, maybe decades, to play out, and through that we have to keep our nerve in clearly supporting democracy."He added "our influence may be limited," however.For its part, Saudi Arabia, which, like the Egyptian armed forces, considers the Muslim Brotherhood movement as a threat, said also on Monday it is ready to compensate Egypt for lost EU aid."To those who have announced they are cutting their aid to Egypt, or threatening to do that, [we say] Arab and Muslim nations are rich ... and will not hesitate to help Egypt," its foreign minister, Saud al-Faisal, said in a statement.Egypt's ambassador to the UK, Ashraf ElKholy, told The Telegraph newspaper that: "Europe is the conscience of the world."He added: "I think we are beginning to see recognition that the Muslim Brotherhood is involved in the violence from Europe's governments."Meanwhile, in another new twist, an Egyptian court on Wednesday acquitted former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on a charge of corruption.The decision means he could be freed from prison this week, aggravating tension.

Russia hit out Friday at calls for force to be used after
Syria's opposition and European states accused the war-torn country's
regime of killing hundreds in chemical weapons attacks.As the
regime's international allies and foes traded barbs over the reported
atrocity, US President Barack Obama said the alleged use of chemical
weapons was "clearly a big event of grave concern".The UN
children's agency UNICEF said, meanwhile, that one million Syrian
children now live as refugees abroad as a result of the relentless
fighting between rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.The
opposition said the regime of Assad, an ally of Moscow, used chemical
weapons east and southwest of Damascus in attacks Wednesday that killed
hundreds of people.The regime denies it unleashed any chemical attacks.Harrowing
footage distributed by activists showing unconscious children, people
foaming around the mouth and doctors apparently giving them oxygen to
help them breathe has triggered revulsion around the world.A day
after French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius urged a reaction "with
force" if a massacre involving chemical weapons is confirmed, his
British counterpart said his government believed Assad's regime was
behind the attacks."We
do believe this is a chemical attack by the Assad regime on a large
scale, but we would like the United Nations to be able to assess that,"
said Britain's William Hague.His televised statement came after
Russia's foreign ministry branded as "unacceptable" calls for use of
force against the Damascus regime."Against the background of
another anti-Syrian wave of propaganda, we believe calls from some
European countries to apply pressure on the UN Security Council and
already now take a decision on the use of force are unacceptable," the
ministry said.It said evidence was mounting that the attack was
"clearly provocative in nature" and that Internet footage said to

accused the rebels of "directly impeding an objective investigation" of

But they insisted only blood and urine samples could provide definitive proof.The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria since its uprising flared in March 2011. Millions more have been forced to flee their homes.UNICEF said on Friday that one million Syrian children now live as refugees abroad, and two million more have been internally displaced."This one millionth child refugee is not just another number. Putin warns Ukraine against EU pact

BRUSSELS - Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine he will take "protective measures" if it signs an EU free trade pact.Speaking on Thursday (22 August) at an economic forum in
Rostov-on-Don, near Ukraine's eastern border with Russia, he said: "If
our neighbours opt to significantly liberalise customs rules with the
European Union, the Ukrainian market will inevitably be flooded with
high quality goods … and Ukrainian goods will be forced out of the
Ukrainian market."He added: "Then, member states of the Customs Union will have to think about protective measures. Such a possibility exists."The Customs Union includes Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.But Moscow wants to pull in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan,

standstill in Ukrainian road and rail imports.Russia in July also banned Ukraine's top chocolate brand, Roshen,
saying it caused cancer, while Kazakhstan on 20 August banned Ukrainian
eggs.An EU spokesman earlier this week said: "Any economic threat from
Russia directed against Ukraine and linked with a possible signature of
the association agreement with the EU is unacceptable."But another risk is that Russia will interrupt gas supplies to
Ukraine when its autumn/winter heating season begins in October, as it
did in 2009, in a move which also hit eastern EU countries which depend
on Ukrainian gas transit.Meanwhile, Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych is in a tricky spot.If he goes against Putin, he risks losing the next elections due to
pro-EU democratic reforms and Russian-inflicted economic pain.But if he joins the Customs Union, he risks undermining Ukrainian
sovereignty and giving Russian oligarchs a free hand in his country.
