Former Knesset member and ex-chairman of the National
Union party Yaakov Katz (Ketzaleh) is calling on the Bayit Yehudi MKs
to immediately depose the chairman of the religious-Zionist party,
Economics Minister Naftali Bennett. Katz says Bennett knows that the

The High Court on Thursday published the details
of its 2012 ruling that MK Hanin Zouabi could not be banned from the
most recent Knesset elections because of her participation in the
Turkish flotilla three years ago – and, newly vindicated, Zouabi said
she would not hesitate to participate in another flotilla.Zouabi, along with other left-wing and Israeli Arab
extremists, participated in the 2010 Turkish-sponsored flotilla that
featured the ill-fated Mavi Marmara ship, which planned to run the
Israeli sea blockade of Gaza. Three dozen Hamas-affiliated Islamists
violently attacked Navy commandos who boarded their Mavi Mamara ship
virtually unarmed after the boat’s captain refused to change course from Hamas-controlled Gaza.That incident resulted in the death of eight Islamist extremists and many serious injuries, including to a number of the IDF commandos.Last December, on the eve of the elections for the current Knesset,
the Central Elections Committee banned her from running for a Knesset
seat. Zouabi appealed to the High Court, which lifted the ban against
her, enabling her to run with her Arab-nationalist Balad party and to
sit in the current Knesset.The Elections Committee banned Zouabi under a clause requiring
candidates and parties not to work against Israel's character as a
Jewish, democratic state. The clause was previously used to bar Rabbi
Meir Kahane from Knesset. The decision came just hours before party
lists for the January 22, 2013 election, with the Court withholding its
reasoning for the decision because of time constraints.Until Thursday, that is – when the Court released its reasoning, with
the judges saying that banning a candidate was a “drastic” decision.
The evidence of Zouabi's inciting of the violence against IDF soldiers
among Hamas-affiliated terrorists who participated in the flotilla was
insufficient, the Court decided. Citing for the majority, Justice Asher
Grunis said that “requesting that one of the basic rights available to
all citizens in a democracy be cancelled requires more than four
Internet articles for evidence.”In another opinion, Justice Salim Jubran said that “participating in
the flotilla in and of itself cannot be considered as supporting
violence.” He added that opposing Israeli policy in Gaza “and a desire
to improve the lot of Palestinians is not a show of support for

heads of Hamas before the flotilla – and that she had advance knowledge

was no proof of this either.A video clip released in 2010 showed Zouabi aboard the Marmara
standing next to a group of Turks who are armed with clubs and metal
bars, with many believing that they were among the mob that attacked the
sparsely-armed IDF soldiers who rappelled down onto the ship after it
refused to adhere to IDF orders to change course. Zouabi said repeatedly
after the incident that though she was on the ship, she had no
knowledge of any preparations for a violent attack on IDF soldiers.Speaking Thursday, Zouabi said that the High Court decision had clearly exonerated her from any evidence of wrongdoing.“After the ongoing attempts to blacken my name and incite against me

PLO official: Israel asked US out of negotiating room

A PLO official accused Israel on
Thursday of undermining negotiations by demanding the removal of the
Americans from the negotiation room in a bid “to exploit their power
over the Palestinians.”“We
had an agreement on three-way negotiations. The Americans from the
beginning were supposed to be there. I don’t see why the Israelis don’t
want the Americans there, as witnesses,” Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the
PLO Executive Committee, told The Times of Israel. “These are not
two-way negotiations,” she added.Israeli and Palestinian negotiators met secretly at Jerusalem’s King David Hotel on Tuesday, Israeli officials said.
A second meeting, held at a secret location the same day, reportedly
included Washington’s representative to the talks Martin Indyk.Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev
refused to comment on Ashrawi’s statements, saying Israel was bound by
an agreement with the Americans not to divulge the contents of talks.
But Ashrawi indicated that her comments did not breach those understandings.“I’m not discussing the details or the facts,”

Bradley Manning wants to live as a woman named Chelsea and begin hormone
treatment as soon as possible, the soldier said a day after being
sentenced to 35 years in prison for sending government secrets to
WikiLeaks.Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years.Manning announced the
decision Thursday in a statement provided to NBC's “Today” show, asking
supporters to refer to him by his new name and the feminine pronoun. The
statement was signed “Chelsea E. Manning.”“As I transition into
this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am
Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt
since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible,”
the statement read.Manning
received the stiffest punishment ever handed out in the U.S. for leaking
information to the media. With good behaviour and credit for the more
than three years of time served, Manning could be out in as little as
seven years, his attorney David Coombs said.Coombs told “Today” he
hoped officials at the military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., will
accommodate Manning's request for hormone treatment, but the Army said
it doesn't provide it or sex-reassignment surgery.“All inmates are
considered soldiers and are treated as such with access to mental health
professionals, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers
and behavioural science noncommissioned officers,” Army spokesman George
Wright said.
Coombs said he
would do “everything in my power to make sure” Manning received hormone
treatment. He did not respond to phone and emails from The Associated

with gender identity disorder — the sense of being a woman trapped in a
man's body — was key at his court-martial.Retired Sgt. 1st Class
Paul Adkins testified as a defence witness, saying in April 2010, just a
month before Manning was arrested, the soldier emailed him a picture of
himself in a blonde wig and lipstick with a letter titled, “My
problem.”“I don't know what to
do anymore, and the only 'help' that seems to be available is severe
punishment and/or getting rid of me,” the email said. “All I do know, is
that fear of getting caught has caused me to go to great lengths to
consciously hide the problem.”Manning's attorney
said the email was evidence the military knew of Manning's struggles,
yet allowed him to stay in Iraq as an intelligence analyst and keep his
security clearance.Meanwhile, Coombs and
supporters said they will ask the Army to reduce Manning's sentence and
they want President Obama to grant a pardon.“The time to end
Brad's suffering is now,” Coombs told a news conference after Manning's
sentence was handed down. “The time for our president to focus on

to the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Coombs said, adding that he
didn't know precisely when the soldier would leave Maryland. Coombs said
he will file a request early next week that Obama pardon Manning or
commute his sentence to time served.Coombs read from a
letter Manning will send to the president that read: “I regret if my
actions hurt anyone or harmed the United States. It was never my intent
to hurt anyone.”The White House said
the request would be considered “like any other application.” However, a
pardon seems unlikely. Manning's case was part of an unprecedented
string of prosecutions brought by the U.S. government in a crackdown on
security breaches. The Obama administration has charged seven people
with leaking to the media; only three people were prosecuted under all
previous presidents combined.Coombs also will work
in coming weeks on a separate process in which he can seek leniency from
the local area commander, who under military law must review — and
could reduce — Manning's convictions and sentence.Manning was found
guilty last month of 20 crimes, including six violations of the
Espionage Act, but was acquitted of the most serious charge, aiding the
enemy, which carried a potential sentence of life in prison without
parole.Coombs said that he
was in tears after the sentencing and that Manning comforted him by
saying: “Don't worry about it. It's all right. I know you did your best.
