Archaeologists working in the Gihon Spring area in the City of David
in Jerusalem have discovered many ancient artifacts, including pottery
shards, clay candle holders, and
figurines dating back to the times of the First and Second Temples.One
recently discovered item has aroused particular interest: a
pottery shard dating back to the First Temple period that includes part
of a phrase etched into its rim. The writing may indicate proof of the
existence of a Biblical figure.The partial phrase reads “...ryahu ben
Benaya,” a possible reference
to the prophet Yecheziel ben Zaharyahu ben Benaya, who is mentioned in
the Biblical book of Chronicles 2, in chapter 20, verse 14. However,
because the writing is incomplete, the full name cannot be verified.The
archaeologists who discovered the pottery shard have dated it to
2,700 years ago – some time between the kingdom of Hezekiah and the
destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE during the reign of King
Zedekiah.Archaeologists have previously found writing in the same area,
on pottery as well as in the form
of stamps and etchings in stone. Some writing has revealed names,
including Gamaryahu ben Shafan (a family mentioned in the biblical texts
as well) and Benayahu ben-Hoshayahu.The shard will go on display on Thursday of this week as part of the 14th City of David Research Exhibition.

Last Thursday saw the second annual fair in Netanya designed to
encourage Jews from France to immigrate to Israel. The event was
initiated by the World Zionist Organization, in collaboration with the
city of Netanya.
The purpose of the fair was to increase the number of Jews making Aliyah from France. Potential applicants for Aliyah attended the fair in order to receive updated information about new absorption programs and tips on how to adjust to any difficulties involved with moving to Israel.During the event, there was a meeting between the Director of the Ministry of Absorption, Oded Furer, and Mayor of Netanya, Miriam Feirberg Ikar, with the leaders of the World Zionist Organization and several senior leaders of French Jewry.As part of the fair, dozens of public and commercial agencies set up information booths and provided information for visitors of the fair. Various banks, institutions for higher education, real-estate consultants, the student authority, and representatives from the Netanya Municipality were among some of the booths.There were entertainment booths, as well as a main performance by singers Omar Adam and Libby Ren.Since 2013, there has been a 10 percent increase of Jewish population in France moving to Israel. It is estimated that there will be 2,500 new immigrants from France by the end of this year, almost doubling the amount of immigrants from previous years. France has the third-largest Jewish community in the world, after Israel and the United States. However, anti-Semitism is rampant in many parts of the country, particularly in areas with high concentrations of Arab and Muslim immigrants.In 2012, an Algerian-Muslim fanatic, Mohammed Mera, murdered three Jewish schoolchildren and a trainee rabbi - as well as three French soldiers - in attacks in and around the French city of Toulouse.In 2006, Ilan Halimi - a 17 year-old French Jew - was kidnapped and tortured to death by a Muslim gang.Those two incidents were simply the deadliest in a string of violent attacks against French Jews, which is believed to be responsible to some degree for the community's rapidly increasing rates of aliyah (immigration to Israel).

Thousands of Muslims gathered on Friday on the Temple Mount
following afternoon prayers to rally in support for Egypt's ousted
president, Mohamed Morsi, and against the Commander-in-Chief of the
Egyptian Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. "We sacrifice our souls and
our blood for Islam," the masses cried.
They continued to repeat their cry, "[Egypt] will be Islamic in spite of
the secular." Another group chanted and accused Abdel Fattah el-Sisi
guilty of treason and they questioned, "Are you a Jew or what?" The
pro-Morsi Muslims carried banners that said, "Sisi: hypocrite,
traitor, working for the Jews," as well as, "Murderer, agent, traitor,
criminal, butcher."There were others in the crowd who compared Sisi to
Adolf Hitler.
Under the pictures of Hitler was written: "I killed the Jews for my
people and for my flock." Under the picture of el-Sisi was written: "I
killed the children of my people and my flock for the Jews."Videos
documented the mass demonstration on the Temple Mount. Both sides in the
Egyptian conflict have engaged in aggressive
anti-Israel rhetoric, accusing their opponents of siding with, or being
supported by, Israel.
On Saturday, Tamarod, the Egyptian movement which led the opposition to ousted President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, called for the Egyptian government to cancel the country's treaty with Israel.Egyptian media reported on Saturday that Tamarod, which amassed 15 million signatures to a petition demanding Morsi’s departure before the army ousted him in July, is now collecting signatures to a new initiative calling to cancel the peace treaty signed between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1979.Tamarod’s latest initiative, according to the reports, comes in the wake of what they called the “unacceptable U.S. interference in Egypt’s political affairs.” The members of the group are demanding that the Israel-Egypt treaty be put to a referendum.The opposition movement is arguing that the agreements with Israel prevent Egypt from deploying large-scale military forces to the Sinai Peninsula where Islamist terrorist groups opposed to the interim government have gained a foothold, and are launching deadly attacks against the Egyptian military and civilians, as well as sporadic attacks against Israel.

Salehi announced Russia a new deal with Russia to build Iran a new
nuclear plant, and insisted the site would be used to generate

Salehi said that negotiations on the planned site were nearing a
conclusion.“Iran has held consultations with the Russian
side and soon an agreement of mutual understanding will be signed on the
construction of a new nuclear power plant,” Salehi said.According to
the report, last February Salehi
told journalists that Iran intended to build another plant, with Russian
aid, at the Bushehr site.Last June Iran also announced its intention to
construct a new nuclear research facility near the town of Zarghan,
south of Tehran.In June, the head of United Nations’ atomic
watchdog said work on Iran’s nuclear program was steadily ramping up
despite the heavy sanctions imposed by the international community on

Iranian nuke chief says country’s nuclear program has 18,000 centrifuges

TEHRAN — Tehran has a total of
18,000 centrifuges for uranium enrichment, Iran’s outgoing nuclear chief
said Saturday. The number is higher by a third than is publicly
known.Uranium enrichment is a process that can be a pathway to making
nuclear weapons.Fereidoun Abbasi’s announcement came as he
handed over his post to the country’s former foreign minister Ali Akbar
Salehi, who was appointed as the new administration’s nuclear chief by
the recently elected President Hasan Rouhani.Abbasi said 10,000
centrifuges currently
operating are of an older model, IR-1, while about 7,000 more of the
same model are ready to be installed along with just over 1,000
centrifuges of an advanced new model.

Wildfire threatens Idaho resort towns as 2,250 homes evacuated
SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A fast-moving central Idaho wildfire forced the evacuation of 2,250 homes near the tourist towns of Hailey and Ketchum as firefighters lost ground on Saturday against the blaze that also threatens the Sun Valley ski resort.Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey called for occupants on the outskirts of both towns to leave without delay. He expanded evacuation zones to include residential developments north of Ketchum.The fast-moving wildfire has burned more than 92,000 acres of sagebrush flats, pine forests and granite canyons in the Sawtooth Range west of a highway that connects Hailey, a town of about 8,000 people, to Ketchum and Sun Valley to the north.More than 1,000 people have fled upscale subdivisions on the southern outskirts of Ketchum, where some homes are worth tens of millions of dollars. The area features the vacation getaways of such celebrities as former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and actor Tom Hanks.The blaze has sent towering columns of smoke over the tourist towns nestled in a narrow mountain valley known for premier hiking, biking, fishing and skiing.An animal shelter on the west side of Hailey, where flames enveloped a mountain ridge and raced toward a city park below, was safely emptied of dogs and cats, said Blaine County Deputy Sheriff Anita Selner.Hundreds of firefighters were battling to keep flames from crossing to the east side of the highway that links the three towns and is the only developed road out of the valley.The so-called Beaver Creek fire has claimed one primary residence, one bunkhouse and six other buildings since being sparked by lightning on August 7, federal fire information officer Sandy Miller said.Roughly 30 people stayed overnight at an American Red Cross shelter in Hailey, where onlookers gathered as air tankers equipped with fire retardant and helicopters with water buckets flew overhead."A lot of people are just watching the fire and our customers are talking about nothing else," said Alexis Sualez, barista at Zaney's River Street Coffee House in Hailey. "People are pretty worried."
The valley is crisscrossed by recreation trails and gated subdivisions of log mansions and luxury homes that border the Sawtooth National Forest.It is one of several high-end enclaves in Western states that have been menaced in recent days by wildfires fueled by record heat, drought and fierce winds.Crews grappling with the Beaver Creek fire were warned that conditions could rapidly deteriorate amid rising temperatures and gusting winds."There is definitely a sense of anxiety," said Blaine County spokeswoman Bronwyn Nickel as residents and vacationers fled the area.(Editing by Barbara Goldberg and Sandra Maler)
