Two United States Republican senators introduced legislation on Thursday to halt arms sales to Egypt.
Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, proposed a bill prohibiting the sale of F-16 aircraft, tanks and other advanced weapons to Egypt’s Muslim-Brotherhood, The Hill reported.“I think it is a blunder of the first proportion to send sophisticated weapons to a country that allowed a mob to attack our embassy and to burn our flag,” Paul said on the Senate floor. “I find it objectionable to send weapons, F-16s and tanks, to a company that allowed a mob chanting ‘death to America’ to threaten our American diplomats.”

palace, was guarded by a large contingent of Iranian Revolutionary
Guards, many of whom died in the attack.A diplomatic source interviewed by the newspaper said that the attack
took place 48 hours before it was first reported. He said that initial
reports regarding a convoy that was attacked were meant to disguise the
true target of the attack. However, the newspaper reported, some trucks
were also destroyed in the attack.The diplomatic source said that Israeli F-16 jets carried out two sorties over the installation, firing at least eight guided missiles at it as well as at least one bunker busting bomb. The installation
was badly damaged and there were numerous casualties. He said that
about 3,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards were stationed at the installation, as well as several Russian experts.He added that the operation must also have relied on good intelligence obtained by Israel within Iran.In Iran, the government-run PressTV quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian Thursday as saying the raid on Syria will have significant implications for Israel.He called upon United Nations Secretary

BRUSSELS - EU officials are expecting
to sketch out a deal within the coming weeks on two regulations that
will govern the single supervisory mechanism (SSM) to be co-ordinated by
the European Central Bank (ECB).A parliament official involved in the negotiations on the banking
union files told EUobserver that "everything has been discussed and we
know where the agreement is moving to."While officials representing governments are reluctant to open up the
texts in negotiations with parliament, MEPs are set to secure
amendments preventing officials involved in the supervision regime from
being able to leave for jobs in the banking sector.They also want to guard against conflicts of interest by preventing
members of the SSM's steering committee from also having a mandate as a
national regulator.Parliament is also pushing for closer control of the SSM's budget and
is demanding the power to approve the chair of the SSM, using a method
similar to the Congressional confirmation hearings for nominees to the
board of the US Federal Reserve.
Although MEPs only have consultative powers over the ECB regulation, they have threatened to block new rules for the European Banking Authority, on which they have equal legislative powers with ministers, if member states refuse to negotiate.The parliament's demands come amid concern that the ECB's new role supervising the eurozone banking sector will create conflicts of interest with its monetary policy arm.
Critics claim that the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), set up in 2011 to act as a watchdog scrutinising trends in Europe's financial sector, already gives the bank a role in macro-economic supervision that could compromise its monetary policy functions.Jana Mittermaier, director of pro-transparency NGO Transparency International, told this website that “ECB supervision is supposed to be a fresh start for the eurozone. This means preventing the conflicts of interest, group think and regulatory capture that contributed to the current crisis. If the Council is serious about addressing these risks, regulating the revolving door between supervisors and supervised is crucial.”Although EU leaders initially set themselves a December 2012 deadline to finalise the first plank of a eurozone banking union, the dates for implementing the rules have slipped. GOP Senators Introduce Legislation Banning Arms Sales to Egypt

Then we started hearing rockets hitting the complex and the ground started shaking and we ran into the basement," said a woman who lives adjacent to the Jamraya site.
The resident, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity over the strike, said she could not tell whether the explosions which woke her were the result of an aerial attack.Another source who has a relative working inside Jamraya said a building inside the complex had been cordoned off and flames were seen rising from the area after the attack."It appears that there were about a dozen rockets that appeared to hit one building in the complex," the source, who also asked not to be identified, told Reuters. Syrian opposition says it will meet U.S., Russia jointly

without Assad stepping down first, but that concession appeared to have
opened the way to Saturday's talks.Both the Coalition and the armed opposition inside Syria had been saying they would be willing to discuss a political transition only after Assad left power.Washington backed the position, while Moscow, Assad's
main backer, was adamant that his departure could not be a precondition
for talks, paralyzing international efforts to end a 22-month-old
conflict that has already killed more than 60,000.A meeting of the Coalition's 12-member politburo ended
at 5 a.m. on Friday with the leadership instructing Khatib, a Sunni
preacher from Damascus, not to respond to any proposals made in Munich
before reverting to them.STRATEGY FOR PEACE OR WAR
The source said the Coalition's politburo had elected a committee to draft a political manifesto that set a strategy for peace, "or advancing the war" if international efforts fail to negotiate an exit for Assad.
The structure of the 70-member Islamist-dominated coalition, which was formed with Western and Arab backing in December, makes Alkhatib a first among equals rather than an outright leader.The source said "knives were out for Alkhatib" from Islamists on the politburo and from the Syrian National Council, an opposition group superseded by the Coalition, after he said he was willing to sit with Syrian officials to discuss a transition if Assad freed tens of thousands of political prisoners arrested since the revolt began.
Kamal al-Labwani, a secular leader and long-time
political prisoner, called Khatib's remarks a fatal mistake that
bestowed legitimacy on Assad and would hurt the morale of the revolt.Alkhatib said his offer of talks had been motivated by
the plight of the prisoners, many of whom were in secret police
dungeons, and made clear that he still believed Assad and his cohorts

leadership source told Reuters the politburo had agreed that Alkhatib
"would demand at the meeting, and accept nothing less than, the ouster
of Assad and the whole secret police state and international support to
rebuild Syria as a democracy".A Western diplomat in contact with the Syrian opposition
said the Munich meeting had to present Alkhatib with proposals for the
removal of Assad that he could accept without losing his credibility.

"The level of frustration among the opposition with
lack of international support for the revolt is very high," the diplomat

says: 'To hell with the international community, and let's direct all

Britain's call to amend a European Union embargo on arms sales to Syria
to help Assad's opponents met opposition on Thursday when EU
governments warned it could allow weapons to end up in the wrong hands,
including Islamist units.On Wednesday, Israeli jets struck what Syria said was a military research centre and diplomats said was a weapons convoy heading for Lebanon.Syria

Nato chief: EU must spend more on military

Rasmussen has urged EU countries to spend more on defence despite the
economic crisis or risk losing US solidarity.He said in a foreword to the alliance's report on 2012,
out on Thursday (31 January), that: "If current defence spending trends
were to continue, that would limit the practical ability of Nato's
European nations to work together with their North American allies. But
it would also risk weakening the political support for our alliance in
the United States."He added Nato is still "the most important military power in the world."But he warned: "The security challenges of the 21st century -
terrorism, proliferation, piracy, cyber warfare, unstable states - will
not go away as we focus on fixing our economies."He also said "the rise of emerging powers could create a growing gap
between their capacity to act and exert influence on the international
stage and our ability to do so."The Nato report says the US accounted for 72 percent of Nato
countries' defence spending in 2012 compared to 68 percent in 2007.
France, Germany, Italy and the UK made up the bulk of the rest, but the
French contribution fell steeply.
"This has the potential to undermine alliance solidarity and puts at risk the ability of the European allies to act without the involvement of the United States," the report notes.It adds that Nato spending as a proportion of world military expenditure fell to 60 percent in 2011 from 69 percent in 2003 and is to hit 56 percent in 2014.

'EU like Vatican'
