Thousands of Christian Zionists gathered at a Texas megachurch on Sunday night to rally in support for Israel, the San Antonio Express-News reported.Pastor John Hagee, noted television evangelist and founder of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), organized the event and reaffirmed the organization’s belief that the defense of Israel as a Jewish homeland and a strong U.S.-Israel bond provides the world with the greatest chance at peace and stability in the Middle East.“The day America turns its back on Israel, that day God will turn his back on the United States of America,” Hagee told the audience.With more than one million members, CUFI is America’s largest pro-Israel organization, according to its website.Sunday’s “Night to Honor Israel”, which brought together rabbis, Christian ministers and Israeli representatives, marked the 31st year the event was held at San Antonio’s Cornerstone Church.Some waved American and Israeli flags while listening to speeches, singing songs and reciting prayers. There was also frequent cheering and clapping as the noted speakers rejecting candidates for U.S. office who have not held Israel's enemies-- most notably Iran-- accountable for seeking the destruction of the Jewish state.The event raised nearly $3 million to support Jewish and Israeli charities.“Such donations and commitment to seek favorable political leadership are reasons to hope,” said Meir Shlomo, consul general of Israel to the Southwest.“We all know you have our back covered,” he said, prompting a prolonged standing ovation.

East Jerusalem streets get names, easing confusion

JERUSALEM (AP) — When he drives around east Jerusalem, taxi driver Samer al-Risheq doesn't use GPS and tucks away his maps. In many parts on this side of the city, those tools are useless: The streets have no names.It's a sign of overall neglect. Now Jerusalem's municipality is trying to at least solve the part that involves signs.In contrast to the orderly western half of the city, where Jews live, the often rundown, predominantly Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem have for decades existed without street names or house numbers, causing confusion."Many times I get a call to pick someone up and I just can't find him," said al-Risheq, who lives in the Shuafat neighborhood of east Jerusalem. His own street, like so many others, has no name.Without names for the labyrinthine streets in the area, residents have had to improvise, using landmarks as reference points. When ordering a pizza, a delivery man is directed to the first left after the mosque, or right before the local school.More seriously, an ambulance driver who isn't familiar with the neighborhood would be hard pressed to find an ailing patient.With no street addresses to guide them, letters are often sent to a central place, like a store or mosque, and don't always reach their intended recipient. Official letters and bills remain uncollected, sometimes causing mounting debts completely unknown to the individual."It's like uncharted territory," said Nisreen Alyan, a lawyer for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, which lobbied to address the confusion. In a symbol of the disorder, even the number of streets that remain to be named is disputed and may be anywhere from 150 to several hundred.Recognizing the problem, Jerusalem's municipality has named 145 streets since last year, and the rest are expected to be identified by next year. House numbers are set to come later.East Jerusalem is not alone in having unnamed streets. In fast-growing places in the Gulf like Dubai or Doha, streets in newer areas do not have names, while Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, has many roads that are not even paved, much less named.In Israel's neighbor Jordan, while streets have long had names, only recently have houses been given numbers. The kingdom caused confusion by changing many street names to make them more compatible with the new numbering system.Even so, the situation in Jerusalem stands out because of the contrasts between the two sides of the city.The predominantly Jewish west has gleaming malls and leafy residential neighborhoods. Residents can be seen sipping cappuccinos on quaint cafe patios, and flowers line the streets. All streets and even the smallest of public squares have names on signs written in Hebrew, English and Arabic.In east Jerusalem, many roads are narrow and potholed, there are few sidewalks and garbage is piled up on street corners. Residents have for years complained of neglect, saying they lack public services such as clinics and schools, even while paying local taxes.Though there are slums in west Jerusalem and upscale neighborhoods in the eastern sector, most parts follow that pattern.Contact between Jews and Arabs, common in the first two decades after Israel captured east Jerusalem, came to a virtual halt with the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising in 1987 and has never recovered.Few Arab residents of east Jerusalem have accepted Israel's offer of citizenship. Instead, they hold residency rights while identifying with their Palestinian brethren in the West Bank.The result is a city that remains interconnected, yet deeply divided. There are no walls separating the two areas, they are linked by a common public transportation system and residents can freely travel anywhere in the city.Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and then annexed it — a move the international community has not recognized. Some 300,000 Palestinians, live in the east Jerusalem alongside 200,000 Jews in developments built since 1967. About 300,000 Jews live in west Jerusalem.

The fate of the eastern sector is one of the most explosive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. East Jerusalem is home to the Old City, where the city's most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites are located. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state, which would also comprise the neighboring West Bank and the Gaza Strip.Israel claims the whole city as its capital.

Jerusalem's mayor has always been Jewish, partly because most east Jerusalem residents boycott elections, and east Jerusalem has little representation in city bodies.Jerusalem's current mayor, Nir Barkat, is staging street naming ceremonies with much fanfare. Earlier this month, he dedicated Umm Kalthoum street, named after the famous Egyptian singer, and a performer warbled love songs as residents clapped their hands.

Barkat has said the aim is to "improve the quality of life" for the residents of east Jerusalem. But some residents have responded by vandalizing the new street signs, an indication of the mistrust that many feel toward the city's Jewish politicians.The names are proposed by the communities and then must be approved by a municipal committee. The choices include the ordinary like "Orchard Street," along with famed Arab historical figures and the names of clans settled in the neighborhoods.Meir Margalit, a liberal city council member who is often critical of the municipality's policies, said the residents believe the naming committee will reject suggestions that seem too political, so they refrain from offering them.Margalit said the new names have also had some undesirable consequences: Some residents have complained they are receiving heaps of old bills, now that they live on streets that can be found.Darwish Musa Darwish, the community leader of the east Jerusalem Issawiyeh neighborhood, said most residents are pleased with the clarity brought by the new names. He acknowledged much work remains to be done in east Jerusalem, but "if I have an address and a street name, it's a sort of progress."Larger problems remain."The municipality doesn't provide us with services," complained Hamoudeh Siam, who owns a shop in the Silwan neighborhood. "Instead of naming the streets, let them come clean them."

If the US presidential elections were being decided by Israeli voters, Mitt Romney would be the clear winner.A poll released Thursday found that 45% of Israelis would hypothetically vote for Romney, while 29% would choose Obama, and 26% don’t have a preference or don’t care.The survey, conducted on Tuesday, interviewed 400 Israeli adults.Among Israeli right-wingers — defined by the pollster as likely Likud, Yisrael Beytenu, and Shas voters, as well as Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox Jews — 58% would vote for Romney, 19% for Obama and 23% did not express a preference.Among Israelis from the center-left bloc — those who intend to vote for the Labor Party, Kadima, Yesh Atid, Meretz, or Atzmaut in Israel’s January elections — 35% would vote for Romney, 46% for Obama and 19% did not express a preference.

Among Israelis who have not yet decided on their Israeli political preferences, 45% would vote for Romney, 26% for Obama and 29% did not express a preference.The research, conducted by Smith Consulting on behalf of Israel Radio, has a margin of error of 4.9%. The poll was mainly focused on Israeli electoral inclinations ahead of the January 22, 2013 general elections here, with the US election questions tagged on at the end.In its questions on Israel, the survey confirmed a likely victory for Benjamin Netanyahu at the head of a Likud-Yisrael Beytenu coalition, with Labor’s Shelly Yachimovich the most popular of the many potential alternate candidates for prime minister. Military chief: EU becoming 'marginal' in Asia-centric world

BRUSSELS - EU countries must share military resources or become "marginal" powers on the world stage, a Swedish general has said.Hakan Syren issued the warning after chairing a regular meeting of EU military commanders in Brussels on Wednesday (31 October)."We have shrinking budgets and we have changing responsibilities. It was shown in the Libya conflict ... I would say there's a new world out there," he told press."The centre of gravity is moving from our continent to the Far East and we must come up with a long-term response to make sure we are not marginalised," he added.Syren's remarks echo US President Barack Obama's statement last year that the end of the Cold War and the rise of China mark the beginning of a "Pacific century," referring to the Pacific Ocean between the two powers.They also come after former US defence chief Robert Gates last year said EU countries could not have toppled Libya's Muammar Gaddafi - "a poorly armed regime in a sparsely populated country" - without American help.For his part, Syren said "pooling and sharing" - an EU agreement on military resources - has to be "taken to the next level" in 2013 as a response.He noted the pooling pact has spawned 15 projects over the past two and half years.
But he added: "There are several, over 12, manufacturers of armoured vehicles [in the EU]. Do we need that? We are buying four different types of combat aircraft right now. Do we need that? Do we have the money for that?"He identified joint EU war schools, joint equipment maintenance and military manoeuvres as future areas for co-operation.He also referred to joint EU operations in Somalia and Uganda as a "success."
But he noted that a new operation in Mali will have to be tailor-made rather than using Somalia as a model.
EU officials earlier this week told Reuters that member states are planning to send 200-or-so military experts to Mali and another 200 soldiers to keep them safe.The EU force will try to get Mali's own army in shape to attack Tuareg tribes in the north of the country.The EU fears that the Tuareg-controlled territory of Azawad is becoming a base for Islamist extremists on the model of Afghanistan.

Report highlights EU trade with Israeli settlers

BRUSSELS - A coalition of 22 NGOs fronted by a former EU commissioner has highlighted the scope of European trade with illegal Israeli settlements.Its report, out on Tuesday (30 October), cited World Bank figures that EU consumers buy €230 million a year worth of products from 500,000 settlers compared to imports of less than €15 million from the 4 million Palestinians in the region."By importing vastly more from settlements that are taking advantage of the occupation than from producers living under the occupation, Europe is helping entrench the discriminatory two-tier system in the West Bank," it said.The main settler imports are dates, grapes, peppers, fresh herbs, cut flowers, avocados, citrus fruits, tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers, potatoes, herbal tea and wine from Israeli firms such as Mehadrin, Arava Export Growers, Hadiklaim, Achdut and Adanim Tea.Zooming in, it said Israel last year exported 12,000 tonnes of dates from the West Bank, compared to 300 tonnes sold abroad by Palestinian farmers.In terms of manufactured goods made on Palestinian land, Israeli soft drinks firm SodaStream sells 68 percent of its output in the EU.

BRUSSELS - British Prime Minister David Cameron suffered an important defeat in parliament on Wednesday (31 October) when opposition Labour party MPs sided with eurosceptics in his own Conservative party to demand a reduction in the EU budgetMPs voted by 307 to 294 in favour of a Tory-rebel amendment calling for the 2014-2020 EU budget to be "reduced in real terms."Ahead of the vote, Cameron portrayed himself as tough on Brussels but left wiggle-room to agree to an EU budget increase in line with 2 percent inflation."This government is taking the toughest line in these budget negotiations of any government since we joined the European Union," he said."At best we would like it cut, at worst frozen, and I'm quite prepared to use the veto if we don't get a deal that's good for Britain," he added.The vote is not legally binding.But it will make it politically more difficult for Cameron to make concessions when EU member states discuss the budget at a summit on 22 November.For its part, the Guardian reported that some senior Conservatives did not back the amendment in order to spite Labour.
But the same grandees have threatened Cameron with a rebellion if he does not get EU spending down.
Meanwhile across the Channel, France added its name to the growing list of potential budget veto-wielders.
It said it is against a proposed cut to farm subsidies to bring down the overall cost of the €1 trillion package.

Israel will create a dual cyber security program to promote research and development to serve both civilian and defense goals, the PMO says.The government is to create a dual cyber security program to promote research development that will serve both civilian and defense goals, the Prime Minister's Office announced Wednesday.The project, to be named MASAD, will be a joint effort of the Israel National Cyber Bureau and Ministry of Defense Directorate for Research and Development.The program is intended “to strengthen and advance Israel's capabilities in cyberspace, turn it into a leading country in cyber technology and thereby serve as a new growth engine for the Israeli economy,” the PMO said in a statement.The new project will begin with a starting budget of NIS 10 million in the coming year. Prices for food are going up in Israel, with the country's largest supermarket chain, Shufersal, announcing Wednesday that it was raising prices across the board on thousands of products. The average price increase will be about 4% - although the chain said that the increases should be higher, because wholesale costs for products had risen more. Shufersal said it was absorbing the rest of the increase, adding that it would not raise prices on its house brand products.In the past several weeks, large companies such as Tnuva and Unilever (which markets Telma brand products) have announced price increases on nearly all its products. They were this week joined by Osem, which said it was increasing prices on pastas, cereals, snack foods, coffee, and sauces that it markets. Soft drinks will cost more, too; Coca Cola announced that it was increasing the price of most of its products, including soft drinks, juices, and water.Canned products made by Vita are set to increase in price, as will products from Hogla, which markets Huggies diapers, a variety of toilet paper and tissues, and other cleaning and paper products. And, as if that weren't enough, electricity prices in Israel are slated to rise 10% and more in the coming months.There was one relatively bright spot for Israelis: The price of gasoline went down at midnight Wednesday. A liter of 95 octane gas at self-service pumps was cut 4.53% Wednesday night, and will cost NIS 7.94 (about $7.75 a gallon). The main reason for the cut was the lower value of the dollar versus the shekel in recent weeks.

Activists: Syrian rebels kill 28 soldiers in north

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian rebels killed 28 soldiers in attacks on military checkpoints in northern Idlib province on Thursday, just hours after a wave of bombings hit Damascus and its outskirts, activists said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels attacked three military checkpoints near the town of Saraqeb, killing the troops. Five rebels also died in gun battles following the attacks, according to the Observatory, which relies on reports from activists on the ground.There was no official confirmation of the deaths from the authorities.The relentless fighting in Syria has killed more than 36,000 people since March 2011, when the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began. It started as peaceful protests inspired by the Arab Spring but quickly morphed into a bloody civil war.The rebels fighting to topple Assad often complain they are outgunned by the military, which has in recent days intensified airstrikes on opposition strongholds following the failure of a U.N.-backed truce over a four-day holiday weekend that never took hold.On Wednesday alone, activists said more than 100 have been killed nationwide in airstrikes, artillery shelling and fighting. Celebratory gunfire at Saudi wedding cuts cable, 23 electrocuted

RIYADH (Reuters) - Celebratory gunfire at a wedding party in eastern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night brought down an electric cable, killing 23 people, a local civil defense official said."At the wedding, the cable fell on a metal door and the 23 people who died were all electrocuted," Eastern Province official Abdullah Khashman said by phone.A photograph of the aftermath of the accident, published on local newspapers' websites showed a large courtyard strewn with fallen chairs and a pole in the middle supporting cables carrying lightbulbs.All those killed were from the same tribe, Khashman said. Thirty others were injured in the incident near Abqaiq, a center of the Saudi energy industry.Saudi Arabia banned the shooting of firearms at weddings, a popular tradition in tribal areas of the conservative Islamic kingdom, last month.Eastern Province governor Prince Mohammed bin Fahd ordered an investigation into the incident, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.(Reporting by Angus McDowall; Editing by Louise Ireland)
